Ancient Craton‐Wide Mid‐Lithosphere Discontinuity Controlled by Pargasite Channels

AbstractThe mechanisms governing a commonly observed seismic velocity drop in the cratonic lithosphere, referred to as the mid‐lithospheric discontinuity (MLD), have been widely debated. To identify the composition and seismic structure of MLDs, we have analyzed Sp receiver functions (SRF) and mantle xenocrysts for six regions across Australia. We utilize locations where seismic stations and kimberlite‐hosted mantle xenocrysts are both available, allowing for comparison between seismological and petrological constraints. Our results show negative SRF phases indicative of the MLD coincide with clinopyroxene‐depleted zones at 60–140 km depth. Clinopyroxenes with different chemical compositions across the MLD define a litho‐chemical discontinuity. Modeling and experimental data show that MLDs may be explained by modified lherzolite with 10%–20% modal pargasite. Pargasite MLDs may form when rising H2O‐bearing melts cross the amphibole dehydration curve and react with clinopyroxene in lherzolite. Because the amphibole dehydration curve is isobaric at 80–120 km, pargasite will be precipitated as horizontal channels.

Seismic Evidence for Craton Formation by Underplating and Development of the MLD

AbstractInconsistencies between observations from long and short period seismic waves and geochemical data mean craton formation and evolution remains enigmatic. Specifically, internal layering and radial anisotropy are poorly constrained. Here, we show that these inconsistencies can be reconciled by inverting cratonic Rayleigh and Love surface wave dispersion curves for shear‐wave velocity and radial anisotropy using a flexible Bayesian scheme. This approach requires no explicit vertical smoothing and only adds anisotropy to layers where required by the data. We show that all cratonic lithospheres are comprised of a positively radially anisotropic upper layer, best explained by Archean underplating, and an isotropic layer beneath, indicative of two‐stage formation. Within the positively radially anisotropic upper layer, we find a variable amplitude low velocity zone within 9 of 12 cratons studied, that is well correlated with observed Mid‐Lithospheric Discontinuities (MLDs). The MLD is best explained by metasomatism after craton formation.

On the detection of upper mantle discontinuities with radon-transformed receiver functions (CRISP-RF)

SUMMARYSeismic interrogation of the upper mantle from the base of the crust to the top of the mantle transition zone has revealed discontinuities that are variable in space, depth, lateral extent, amplitude and lack a unified explanation for their origin. Improved constraints on the detectability and properties of mantle discontinuities can be obtained with P-to-S receiver function (Ps-RF) where energy scatters from P to S as seismic waves propagate across discontinuities of interest. However, due to the interference of crustal multiples, uppermost mantle discontinuities are more commonly imaged with lower resolution S-to-P receiver function (Sp-RF). In this study, a new method called CRISP-RF (Clean Receiver-function Imaging using SParse Radon Filters) is proposed, which incorporates ideas from compressive sensing and model-based image reconstruction. The central idea involves applying a sparse Radon transform to effectively decompose the Ps-RF into its underlying wavefield contributions, that is direct conversions, multiples, and noise, based on the phase moveout and coherence. A masking filter is then designed and applied to create a multiple-free and denoised Ps-RF. We demonstrate, using synthetic experiment, that our implementation of the Radon transform using a sparsity-promoting regularization outperforms the conventional least-squares methods and can effectively isolate direct Ps conversions. We further apply the CRISP-RF workflow on real data, including single station data on cratons, common-conversion-point stack at continental margins and seismic data from ocean islands. The application of CRISP-RF to global data sets will advance our understanding of the enigmatic origins of the upper mantle discontinuities like the ubiquitous mid-lithospheric discontinuity and the elusive X-discontinuity.

IMPRINTS OF PLUME PROCESSES IN THE MODERN LITHOSPHERIC VELOCITY STRUCTURE OF THE KHIBINO-LOVOZERO REGION

The paper presents new deep velocity of the earth’s crust and upper mantle in the Khibiny-Lovozero tectonic region located on the Kola Peninsula. The artifacts of plume-lithospheric interactions that occurred in the investigated area from the Proterozoic to the Paleozoic time are discussed. A detailed comparison of the velocity structure of the Imandra-Varzug rift, the Khibiny and Lovozero plutons, and the adjacent Archean part of the Fennoscandinavian Shield has been carried out. A significant heterogeneity of the structure of the crust, upper mantle, as well as the structure and depth of the crust-mantle transition is shown. The presence of a zone of low seismic velocities in the upper mantle associated with the mid-lithospheric discontinuity (MLD) has been revealed. Structural features of the Moho zone and the upper mantle in the region of the Khibiny and Lovozero plutons were interpreted as artifacts of the plume process.

Seismic Architecture of the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere System in the Western United States from a Joint Inversion of Body- and Surface-wave Observations: Distribution of Partial Melt in the Upper Mantle

Quantitative evaluation of the physical state of the upper mantle, including mapping temperature variations and the possible distribution of partial melt, requires accurately characterizing absolute seismic velocities near seismic discontinuities. We present a joint inversion for absolute but discontinuous models of shear-wave velocity (Vs) using 4 types of data: Rayleigh wave phases velocities, P-to-s receiver functions, S-to-p receiver functions, and Pn velocities. Application to the western United States clarifies where upper mantle discontinuities are lithosphere-asthenosphere boundaries (LAB) or mid-lithospheric discontinuities (MLD). Values of Vs below 4 km/s are observed below the LAB over much of the Basin and Range and below the edges of the Colorado Plateau; the current generation of experimentally based models for shear-wave velocity in the mantle cannot explain such low Vs without invoking the presence of melt. Large gradients of Vs below the LAB also require a gradient in melt-fraction. Nearly all volcanism of Pleistocene or younger age occurred where we infer the presence of melt below the LAB. Only the ultrapotassic Leucite Hills in the Wyoming Craton lie above an MLD. Here, the seismic constraints allow for the melting of phlogopite below the MLD.

Magnetotelluric Imaging of the Lithospheric Structure of the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen: Evidence for Long‐Term Weakening Caused by Rifting

AbstractMagnetotelluric data were used to study the lithosphere structure of the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen (SOA). Inversion of the data revealed two low resistivity anomalies beneath the SOA. The first is located in the depth range 0–90 km in the crust and upper lithospheric mantle. The second extends from a depth 100 km to the base of the lithospheric mantle and extends away from the SOA to the ends of the profile. The cause of low resistivity anomalies is discussed in relation to the tectonic evolution of the region and recent laboratory experiments on rock conductivity. The first anomaly is attributed to the combination of (a) water present in mantle minerals and (b) the formation of hydrous mineral phases by interactions between a plume and the lithosphere during rifting. Grain size reduction and fabric alignment from deformation during the Ancestral Rocky Mountain (ARM) orogeny may have also contributed to the low resistivity. This enrichment phase may have mechanically weakened the lithosphere and allowed deformation to occur during the ARM orogeny. The low resistivity of the deeper anomaly is attributed to a fluorine‐enriched phlogopite layer that is also coincident with an observed seismic mid‐lithosphere discontinuity (MLD). A lithosphere keel of mantle minerals enriched in water underlies this layer and may have formed by accretion of the plume head to the lower lithosphere after rifting, which also rethickened the lithosphere to its present‐day depths. The MLD may then reflect a melt layer along a paleo lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary entombed during the accretion.

The Mid‐Lithospheric Discontinuity Caused by Channel Flow in Proto‐Cratonic Mantle

AbstractGlobal geophysical observations show the presence of the enigmatic mid‐lithospheric discontinuity (MLD) at depths of ca. 80–150 km which may question the stability and internal structure of the continental lithosphere. While various mechanisms may explain the MLD, the dynamic processes leading to the seismic observations are unclear. Here we present a physical mechanism for the origin of MLD by channel flow in the cratonic mantle lithosphere, triggered by convective instabilities at cratonic margins in the Archean when the mantle was hot. Our numerical modeling shows that the top of the frozen‐in channel flow creates a shear zone at a depth comparable to the globally observed seismic MLD. Grain size reduction in the shear zone and accumulation of percolated melts or fluids along the channel top may reduce seismic wave speeds as observed below the MLD, while the channel flow itself may explain radial anisotropy of seismic wave speeds and change in direction of the seismic anisotropic fast axis. The proposed mechanism is valid for a broad range of physically realistic parameters and that MLD may have been preserved since its formation in the Archean. The intensity of the channel flow ceased with time due to secular cooling of the Earth's interior. The new mechanism may reshape our understanding of the evolution and stability of cratonic lithosphere.

New insights on Moho depth and regional lithospheric structure of central Oklahoma based on receiver function analysis from dense seismic networks

Knowledge of the midcontinent crustal structure of North America is crucial for understanding the evolutionary history of the ancient North American craton as Laurentia grew through accretion ∼1.5 Ga to 1 Ga. Although Oklahoma has been recognized as a tectonically stable region since the Phanerozoic, its crustal structure records the earlier formation of the Mazatzal and southern Granite-Rhyolite provinces 1.6 Ga to 1.4 Ga. We present results from teleseismic receiver function analysis applied to 221 events recorded on 169 broadband stations in central Oklahoma. Our findings include a Moho depth map of central Oklahoma based on stacked and depth-converted teleseismic P receiver functions. The results are interpreted together with gravimetric and magnetic datasets and a recently established seismic velocity model of the crust.The Moho map shows a generally flat crust-mantle boundary in central Oklahoma with an average depth of 43.5 km while we observe a sudden thickening on the crust of the northwestern part of Oklahoma where the Moho deepens to over 50 km depth. We also find a Mid-lithosphere discontinuity at the upper-most mantle in north-central Oklahoma, presented as a negative phase deepening southeastward from 60 km to 80 km. We further observe an intracrustal discontinuity at the Nemaha uplift and Anadarko shelf regions in a depth range of 17–30 km. The hypothesis of the Mid-continent Rift (MCR) extending into Oklahoma is examined in terms of the crustal structure and Moho depth variation revealed by receiver functions. We do not find evidence of Moho structure or lower-crustal underplay characteristics similar to what has been discovered in the northern part of MCR, but the intracrustal discontinuity that deepens towards the hypothesized MCR region suggests upper-crustal volcanics potentially caused by the extended expansion regime of the failed rift near the south-most termination.

Deep velocity structure of the eastern margin of the Sarmatian protocraton based on the «Aleksandrovka» seismic station data from the receiver function technique

A velocity section was obtained to a depth of about 250 km on the eastern margin of the Sarmatia protocraton (East-European Craton) based on P receiver functions (PRF). Seismograms of the new broadband station «Aleksandrovka» were used as initial data. The section reveals the main seismic boundaries, and also shows the presence of mid-lithospheric discontinuity in the upper mantle (MLD).

Anisotropic structure of the Australian continent

The Australian continent preserves some of the oldest lithosphere on Earth in the Yilgarn, Pilbara, and Gawler Cratons. In this study we present shear wave splitting and Ps receiver function results at long running stations across the continent. We use these results to constrain the seismic anisotropic structure of Australia’s cratons and younger Phanerozoic Orogens. For shear wave splitting analysis, we utilize SKS and SKKS phases at 35 broadband stations. For Ps receiver function analysis, which we use to image horizontal boundaries in anisotropy, we utilize 14 stations. Shear wave splitting results at most stations show strong variations in both orientation of the fast direction and delay time as a function of backazimuth, an indication that multiple layers of anisotropy are present. In general, observed fast directions do not appear to be the result of plate motion alone, nor do they typically follow the strike of major tectonic/geologic features at the surface, although we do point out several possible exceptions. Our Ps receiver function results show significant variations in the amplitude and polarity of receiver functions with backazimuth at most stations across Australia. In general, our results do not show evidence for distinctive boundaries in seismic anisotropy, but instead suggest heterogenous anisotropic structure potentially related to previously imaged mid-lithospheric discontinuities. Comparison of Ps receiver function and shear wave splitting results indicates the presence of laterally variable and vertically layered anisotropy within both the thicker cratonic lithosphere to the west, as well as the Phanerozoic east. Such complex seismic anisotropy and seismic layering within the lithosphere suggests that anisotropic fabrics may be preserved for billions of years and record ancient events linked to the formation, stabilization, and evolution of cratonic lithosphere in deep time.

Enigmatic crustal and upper mantle structure in the NE Sino-Korean Craton based on nuclear explosion seismic data

We interpret the crustal and upper mantle structure along ∼2500 km long seismic profiles in the northeastern part of the Sino-Korean Craton (SKC). The seismic data with high signal-to-noise ratio were acquired with a nuclear explosion in North Korea as source. Seismic sections show several phases including Moho reflections (PmP) and their surface multiple (PmPPmP), upper mantle refractions (P), primary reflections (PxP, PL, P410), exceptionally strong multiple reflections from the Moho (PmPPxP), and upper mantle scattering phases, which we model by ray-tracing and synthetic seismograms for a 1-D fine-scale velocity model. The observations require a thin crust (30 km) with a very low average crustal velocity (ca. 6.15 km/s) and exceptionally strong velocity contrast at the Moho discontinuity, which can be explained by a thin Moho transition zone (< 5 km thick) with strong horizontal anisotropy. We speculate that this anisotropy was induced by lower crustal flow during delamination dripping. An intra-lithospheric discontinuity (ILD) at ∼75 km depth with positive velocity contrast is probably caused by the phase transformation from spinel to garnet. Delayed first arrivals followed by a long wave train of scattered phases of up to 4 s duration are observed in the 800–1300 km offset range, which are modelled by continuous stochastic velocity fluctuations in a low-velocity zone (LVZ) below the Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity (MLD) between 120 and 190 km depth. The average velocity of this LVZ is about 8.05 km/s, which is much lower than the IASP91 standard model. This LVZ is most likely caused by rocks which are either partially molten or close to the solidus, which explains both low velocity and the heterogeneous structure.

Continental Mid‐Lithosphere Discontinuity: A Water Collector During Craton Evolution

AbstractContinental mid‐lithosphere discontinuity (MLD) seems to be ubiquitous beneath cratons around the world with the dominant depth of 70–100 km, and is characterized by a shear‐wave velocity drop of 2%–7%, according to geophysical observations. The MLD is often considered to be related to a rheologically weak layer; however, the mechanism of MLD formation is widely debated. In this study, we have conducted systematic numerical modeling with a new and simplified deep hydration method to study the dynamics of craton evolution and MLD formation. The results indicate that the MLD may be induced by slow hydration processes within the mantle lithosphere during craton evolution. The top boundary of this hydrated layer is characterized by high water content and low shear‐wave velocities, and is consistent with the depth and properties of natural MLD observations. Thus, we propose that the MLD may act as a water collector during craton evolution.

Multi‐Stage Evolution of the South Australian Craton: Petrological Constraints on the Architecture, Lithology, and Geochemistry of the Lithospheric Mantle

AbstractTo improve the understanding of the formation and evolution of the sub‐continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) underlying the South Australian Craton we have conducted a detailed petrological study on &gt;3,000 mantle xenocrysts from 13 kimberlites emplaced across the craton. Pressure (P) and temperature (T) estimates on Cr diopside and garnet have been coupled with their chemical concentrations to constrain lithospheric thickness and chemo‐lithostratigraphy. We show that lithospheric thickness is greatest beneath the Gawler Craton, whereas thinner lithosphere occurs beneath the Adelaide Fold Belt. Mineral compositions highlight two litho‐chemical domains within the shallow and deep SCLM that are separated by a mid‐lithosphere discontinuity (MLD). The shallow SCLM (60–130 km) comprises low Cr2O3 lherzolite and wehrlite. Shallow SCLM xenocrysts record depleted and refertilized compositions enriched in light rare earth elements related to metasomatism by kimberlite or related melts. The mid‐lithosphere (130–160 km) is depleted in garnet and Cr diopside which may relate to a layer of pargasite lherzolite. The deep SCLM (&gt;160 km) comprises high Cr2O3 lherzolite with elevated TiO2 and FeO. We interpret the litho‐chemical stratification of the SCLM to reflect a multi‐stage top‐down growth. The shallow SCLM reflects an amalgamation of Precambrian cratonic nuclei characterized by heterogeneity in geochemical enrichment and depletion. Interaction of the shallow SCLM with mantle plumes accreted melts along the paleo‐lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary, which now occurs as a MLD. The deep SCLM represents depleted mantle residue formed during mantle plume impingement and thickened during orogenesis. This domain has been metasomatized and refertilized by high‐T melts from the asthenosphere.

The A B C's of metasomatism in the North Atlantic Craton during Pangea breakup; characterized by fluid inclusions in Chidliak diamonds

Here we report the nitrogen characteristics and composition of high-density fluid (HDF) trapped in microinclusions in a suite of fibrous diamonds from the ~142 Ma Chidliak CH-7 kimberlite pipe, the Hall Peninsula, southern Baffin Island, Nunavut. Within these diamonds, we observe three populations based on the chemistry of the encapsulated HDFs, the diamond's nitrogen aggregation states, and the diamond color. ‘Chidliak C' diamonds contain highly silicic HDFs, have nitrogen in A- and C-centers (with 5–20% in C-centers), and a characteristic intense yellow color. ‘Chidliak A' diamonds contain silicic to low-Mg carbonatitic HDFs, carry nitrogen solely in A-centers, and are mostly colorless. A third population, ‘Chidliak B', has grey color and distinctive low-K2O silicic to low-Mg carbonatitic HDF compositions and overall smoother and less fractionated trace element pattern relative to ‘Chidliak C' and ‘Chidliak A' diamonds; they carry nitrogen in A- and B-centers (with ~15% in B-centers) and are characterized by a grey hue. An eclogitic paragenesis of all diamonds is evident by the HDF compositional variation as well as the presence of omphacitic clinopyroxene inclusions. The appearance of a diamond with A- and B-centers in its octahedral core and A- and C-centers in its coat suggests formation at two distinct events at a similar depth. Combined with pressure and mantle residence estimates based on nitrogen aggregation considerations, we argue that the three diamond populations formed at the relatively shallow region of the lithosphere (likely <180 km) during distinct metasomatic events in the North Atlantic Craton (NAC) since the Proterozoic. The youngest event by silicic HDFs took place close in time to kimberlite activity at 142–157 Ma, as evident by the preservation of nitrogen C-centers in ‘Chidliak C' diamonds. A link between this event and the mid-lithosphere discontinuity (MLD) in eclogitic portions of the cratonic lithosphere in Chidliak is plausible. The timing of ‘Chidliak A' diamonds formation by more carbonatitic HDFs is less well constrained, but can be related to Ca-rich metasomatism observed in local peridotite xenoliths and/or alkaline magmatism between 610 and 550 Ma. A possible link between the formation of ‘Chidliak B' diamonds and the timing of Mesoproterozoic olivine lamproite magmatism ca. 1400 Ma is suggested based on the HDF trace element composition and the aggregated nature of nitrogen in these diamonds. The nitrogen systematics and eclogitic source of the fibrous diamonds are comparable with those observed for previously studied gem-quality diamonds from Chidliak. We suggest that these similarities show a temporal connection and mutual crystallization of the two diamond types. This strengthens the involvement of HDFs in the formation of gem-quality diamonds.

The lithospheric structure beneath the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and western North China Craton from S receiver function imaging and its implications for lateral growth of the plateau

The mantle lithospheric structures beneath the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NETP) and adjacent areas provide critical information about the role of the mantle lithosphere in the lateral growth of the plateau. In this study, we construct a comprehensive image of the lithospheric structure across the NETP and western North China Craton (NCC) using the S-wave receiver function method based on the dense seismic array of ChinArray II. We detect one or multiple negative conversions at the depth ranging from 80 to 200 km across most of the study region, which is associated with the seismic lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) or mid-lithospheric discontinuity (MLD) within the lithospheric mantle. The main features include that the Beishan Block, West Qinling Orogen, and Qilian Orogen present a relatively shallow LAB at a depth range of 120–140 km, while the Longxi Basin and Alashan Block have the similar lithospheric structure with a deep LAB at depth > 150 km and some MLDs within the lithospheric mantle. We find that the Qilian Orogen in the western NETP overlying a thin mantle lithosphere has been significantly elevated, whereas the Longxi Basin in the eastern NETP with a thick mantle lithosphere lacks both high elevations and significant crustal thickening. It implies that the thick mantle lithosphere beneath the eastern NETP and western NCC likely prevents the plateau from invading the Longxi Basin, while the thin mantle lithosphere across the western NETP and Beishan Block favors outward growth of the Qilian Orogen. Our seismic images provide new insights into the lithospheric heterogeneities and their roles in the lateral growth of the Tibetan Plateau.

Evidence for a lithospheric step and pervasive lithospheric thinning beneath southern New England, northeastern USA

AbstractIn this study, we use data from the SEISConn seismic experiment to calculate Sp receiver functions in order to characterize the geometry of upper-mantle structure beneath southern New England (northeastern United States). We image robust negative-velocity-gradient discontinuities beneath southern New England that we interpret as corresponding to the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and identify a well-defined step of 15 km in LAB depth at a longitude of 73°W, which we interpret to be the boundary between Laurentian and Appalachian lithosphere, although the offset may be larger if the putative LAB phase is reinterpreted to be a mid-lithospheric discontinuity. We infer that the lithosphere throughout the region is substantially thinner than elsewhere in the continental interior, consistent with regional tomographic studies and previously published Sp receiver function results. The presence of thinned lithosphere suggests that the low-velocity Northern Appalachian Anomaly (NAA) in the upper mantle may extend as far south as coastal Connecticut. The presence of regionally thinned lithosphere and a step in lithospheric thickness suggests that inherited structure may be preserved in present-day lithosphere, even in the presence of more recent dynamic processes associated with the NAA.

Numerical Investigation on the Dynamic Evolution of Intra-Crustal Continental Delamination

Delamination often occurs in continental regions, through which process the lithospheric mantle detaches from the continental crust and sinks into the underlying asthenospheric mantle. Various modes of continental delamination are proposed, including the typical mode of delamination along the Moho and the newly proposed delamination along the mid-lithospheric discontinuity. Geological and geophysical observations reveal the possibility of an alternative mode of delamination, i.e., intra-crustal continental delamination, which is rarely studied. Using the 2D thermo-mechanical coupled geodynamical models, we systemically study the dynamic evolution of the intra-crustal continental delamination. Model results suggest that the intra-crustal continental delamination develops along the base of the upper crust, promoted by the intra-crustal decoupling, i.e., the mechanical strength decoupling between the upper and lower crust. The three physical parameters, i.e., the upper crustal thickness, the lower crustal rheology, and the initial Moho temperature all affect intra-crustal strength decoupling, and thus influence continental delamination. Combining with geological and geophysical observations, we speculate that intra-crustal continental delamination taking place along the upper and lower crustal interface is a possible way of continental destruction.
