Observations of polar mesospheric summer echoes resembling kilometer-scale varicose-mode flows

Abstract. The mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region represents a captivating yet challenging field of research. Remote sensing techniques, such as radar, have proven invaluable for investigating this domain. The Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY), located in northern Norway (69∘ N, 16∘ E), uses polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSEs) as tracers to study MLT dynamics across multiple scales. Chau et al. (2021) recently discovered a spatiotemporally highly localized event showing a varicose mode (simultaneous upward and downward movements), which is characterized by extreme vertical velocities (|w|≥3σ) of up to 60 m s−1 in the vertical drafts. Motivated by this finding, our objective is to identify and quantify similar extreme events or comparable varicose structures, i.e., defined by quasi-simultaneous updrafts and downdrafts, that may have been previously overlooked or filtered out. To achieve this, we conducted a thorough manual search through a MAARSY dataset, considering the PMSE months (i.e., May, June, July, August) spanning from 2015 to 2021. This search has revealed that these structures do indeed occur relatively frequently with an occurrence rate of up to 2.5 % per month. Over the 7-year period, we observed and recorded more than 700 varicose-mode events with a total duration of about 265 h and documented their vertical extent, vertical velocity characteristics, duration, and their occurrence behavior. Remarkably, these events manifest throughout the entire PMSE season with pronounced occurrence rates in June and July, while the probability of their occurrence decreases towards the beginning and end of the PMSE seasons. Furthermore, their diurnal variability aligns with that of PMSEs. On average, the observed events persisted for 20 min, while the varicose mode caused an average expansion of the PMSE layer by a factor of 1.5, with a maximum vertical expansion averaging around 8 km. Notably, a careful examination of the vertical velocities associated with these events confirmed that approximately 17 % surpassed the 3σ threshold, highlighting their non-Gaussian velocity distribution and extreme nature.

Momentum Flux and Vertical Wind Power Spectral Characteristics in the Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere Over Andøya, Norway as Observed by MAARSY

AbstractWe used the tropospheric and lower stratospheric 3D winds for four consecutive years (2017–2020) to study the momentum flux (MF) and vertical wind power spectra (VWP) over Andøya, Norway (69.30°N, 16.04°E) using the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System. The spectra range from 3.5 days−1 > f > 30 min−1, which are categorized in terms of observed/ground‐based frequency (as the local inertial period is 13 h over Andøya), height ranges, and seasons. Our results indicate for the first time that (a) both the zonal and meridional MF display peaks around the inertial period (13 h) in the troposphere (1.80–12.00 km) during all seasons (with some exceptions), while VWP exhibits such features in the whole height range (1.80–18.00 km), (b) the minimum variability in MF, VWP, and kinetic energy is observed during summer, and (c) both the MF and VWP demonstrate height variation with maximum deviations below the tropopause.

Characteristics of Frequency‐Power Spectra in the Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere Over Andøya (Norway) Revealed by MAARSY

AbstractThis study investigates the tropospheric and lower stratospheric 3D wind frequency spectra at Andøya, Norway (69.30°N and 16.04°E) during the years 2017–2020 obtained with the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System. We produce power spectral density S(f) in a broad frequency range (3.5 days−1 > f > 1h−1). We categorize the spectra into different ranges: two frequency ranges (lower and higher than (13 hr)−1 according to the local inertial period of 13 hr), four altitude ranges (lower troposphere, middle troposphere, tropopause region, and lower stratosphere), and four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter). We approximate the power law S(f) ∝ fβ through a least‐square regression. Our results indicate that (a) the spectra of the horizontal winds follow a power law with slopes of about β = −5/3 and −2 at the high and low frequency, respectively, (b) the slopes get steeper around the tropopause and seasonally during the summer (which we report for the first time), and (c) the slope β in the vertical wind is shallow 0 > β > −1, which flattens with altitude.

Characterization of polar mesospheric VHF radar echoes during solar minimum winter 2019/2020. Part I: Ionisation

The exceptionally solar and geomagnetic quiet winter of 2019–2020 provides a very useful scenario to study polar mesospheric radar echoes. Such a condition limits the impact of ionisation caused by geomagnetic storms and particle precipitation and allows to investigate the role of moderate electron densities as well as neutral dynamics in formation and transport of the structures causing these echoes. For this purpose we used the continuous operation of the sensitive VHF Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) in conjunction with the Saura partial reflection radar throughout the winter as key instruments to monitor the Mesosphere. Eight months of radar measurements are analyzed in respect to occurrence, echo power, spectral widths and their relation to practically common volume measurements of electron densities. VHF polar mesospheric echoes observed during 2019/2020 were generally more faint and occurred less frequent than in previous year. The very low occurrence rates of 6.5% at most for the months November to February as well as the complete absence of echoes below 56 km throughout the season are very remarkable. Highest occurrences of echoes with spectral widths mostly below 3 ms−1 were seen for electron densities of 3 ⋅ 108 m−3, while on average Ne ~ 5.5⋅ 108 m−3 were observed for the presence of VHF echoes, representing a necessary prerequisite to observe such VHF radar echoes. VHF radar echoes occurring at altitudes below 75 km furthermore seem to show preferences to distinct electron number density windows.

Probabilistic analysis of ambiguities in radar echo direction of arrival from meteors

Abstract. Meteors and hard targets produce coherent radar echoes. If measured with an interferometric radar system, these echoes can be used to determine the position of the target through finding the direction of arrival (DOA) of the incoming echo onto the radar. Depending on the spatial configuration of radar-receiving antennas and their individual gain patterns, there may be an ambiguity problem when determining the DOA of an echo. Radars that are theoretically ambiguity-free are known to still have ambiguities that depend on the total radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study, we investigate robust methods which are easy to implement to determine the effect of ambiguities on any hard target DOA determination by interferometric radar systems. We apply these methods specifically to simulate four different radar systems measuring meteor head and trail echoes, using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) DOA determination algorithm. The four radar systems are the Middle And Upper Atmosphere (MU) radar in Japan, a generic Jones 2.5λ specular meteor trail radar configuration, the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) radar in Norway and the Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere Incoherent Scatter (PANSY) radar in the Antarctic. We also examined a slightly perturbed Jones 2.5λ configuration used as a meteor trail echo receiver for the PANSY radar. All the results are derived from simulations, and their purpose is to grant understanding of the behaviour of DOA determination. General results are as follows: there may be a region of SNRs where ambiguities are relevant; Monte Carlo simulation determines this region and if it exists; the MUSIC function peak value is directly correlated with the ambiguous region; a Bayesian method is presented that may be able to analyse echoes from this region; the DOA of echoes with SNRs larger than this region are perfectly determined; the DOA of echoes with SNRs smaller than this region completely fail to be determined; the location of this region is shifted based on the total SNR versus the channel SNR in the direction of the target; and asymmetric subgroups can cause ambiguities, even for ambiguity-free radars. For a DOA located at the zenith, the end of the ambiguous region is located at 17 dB SNR for the MU radar and 3 dB SNR for the PANSY radar. The Jones radars are usually used to measure specular trail echoes far from zenith. The ambiguous region for a DOA at 75.5∘ elevation and 0∘ azimuth ends at 12 dB SNR. Using the Bayesian method, it may be possible to analyse echoes down to 4 dB SNR for the Jones configuration when given enough data points from the same target. The PANSY meteor trail echo receiver did not deviate significantly from the generic Jones configuration. The MAARSY radar could not resolve arbitrary DOAs sufficiently well enough to determine a stable region. However, if the DOA search is restricted to 70∘ elevation or above by assumption, stable DOA determination occurs above 15 dB SNR.

Precision Measurements of Radar Transverse Scattering Speeds From Meteor Phase Characteristics

AbstractIn this paper, we describe an improved technique for using the backscattered phase from meteor radar echo measurements just prior to the specular point (t0) to calculate meteor speeds and their uncertainty. Our method, which builds on earlier work of Cervera et al. (1997, https://doi.org/10.1029/96RS03638), scans possible speeds in the Fresnel distance‐time domain with a dynamic, sliding window and derives a best‐speed estimate from the resultant speed distribution. We test the performance of our method, called pre‐t0 speeds by sliding‐slopes technique (PSSST), on transverse scattered meteor echoes observed by the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) and the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) and compare the results to time‐of‐flight and Fresnel transform speed estimates. Our novel technique is shown to produce good results when compared to both model and speed measurements using other techniques. We show that our speed precision is ±5% at speeds less than 40 km/s, and we find that more than 90% of all CMOR multistation echoes have PSSST solutions. For CMOR data, PSSST is robust against the selection of critical phase value and poor phase unwrapping. Pick errors of up to ±6 pulses for meteor speeds less than about 50 km/s produce errors of less than ±5% of the meteoroid speed. In addition, the width of the PSSST speed Kernel density estimate (KDE) is used as a natural measure of uncertainty that captures both noise and t0 pick uncertainties.

Four‐Dimensional Quantification of Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instabilities in the Polar Summer Mesosphere Using Volumetric Radar Imaging

AbstractWe present and characterize in time and three spatial dimensions a Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instability (KHI) event from polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE) observed with the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System. We use a newly developed radar imaging mode, which observed PMSE intensity and line of sight velocity with high temporal and angular resolution. The identified KHI event occurs in a narrow layer of 2.4 km thickness centered at 85 km altitude, is elongated along north‐south direction, presents separation between billows of 8 km in the east‐west direction, and its billow width is 3 km. The accompanying vertical gradients of the horizontal wind are between 35 and 45 m/s/km and vertical velocities inside the billows are 12 m/s. Based on the estimated Richardson ( 0.25), horizontal Froude ( 0.8), and buoyancy Reynolds ( 2.5 10 ) numbers, the observed event is a KHI that occurs under weak stratification and generates strong turbulence.

Direct Comparison Between Magnetospheric Plasma Waves and Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes in Both Hemispheres

AbstractWe present the first and direct comparison between magnetospheric plasma waves and polar mesosphere winter echoes (PMWE) simultaneously observed by the conjugate observation with Arase satellite and high‐power atmospheric radars in both hemispheres, namely, the Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere, Stratosphere, and Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter Radar at Syowa Station (SYO; −69.00°S, 39.58°E), Antarctica, and the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System at Andøya (AND; 69.30°N, 16.04°E), Norway. The PMWE were observed during 03–07 UT on 21 March 2017, just after the arrival of corotating interaction region in front of high‐speed solar wind stream. An isolated substorm occurred at 04 UT during this interval. Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and whistler mode chorus waves were simultaneously observed near the magnetic equator and showed similar temporal variations to that of the PMWE. These results indicate that chorus waves as well as EMIC waves are drivers of precipitation of energetic electrons, including relativistic electrons, which make PMWE detectable at 55‐ to 80‐km altitude. Cosmic noise absorption measured with a 38.2‐MHz imaging riometer and low‐altitude echoes at 55–70 km measured with an medium‐frequency radar at SYO also support the relativistic electron precipitation. We suggest a possible scenario in which the various phenomena observed in near‐Earth space, such as magnetospheric plasma waves (EMIC waves and chorus waves), pulsating auroras, cosmic noise absorption, and PMWE, can be explained by the interaction between the high‐speed solar wind containing corotating interaction regions and the magnetosphere.

Characteristics of very faint (+16) meteors detected with the Middle Atmosphere ALOMAR Radar System (MAARSY)

In September/October 2016 a dedicated specular meteor trail experiment with the high-power, large-aperture MAARSY radar was conducted, combining the high-power density of the radar with the large scattering target of trail echoes with the goal of probing the population of very small, slow-moving meteoroids. In contrast to meteor head echo observations, we find our raw velocity distribution peaks around 19 km/s for meteoroids with a limiting radar magnitude of +16. The correction for different observing biases to an equivalent limiting mass leads to a peak in the meteoroid influx at 13 km/s. Our calculated meteoroid masses range from 10−11 to 10−7 kg. Using an ablation model we show that our detections are near the micrometeorite ablation limit at low speeds. A tentative comparison with a Jupiter Family Comets (JFC) dynamical meteoroid model shows an apparent excess of large, slow meteoroids not predicted by the model.

D region observations by VHF and HF radars during a rocket campaign at Andøya dedicated to investigations of PMWE

Abstract. In April 2018 the PMWE1 sounding rocket campaign was conducted at the Andøya Space Center involving coordinated measurements with rockets and ground instruments to measure parameters relevant for testing of the existing theories of polar mesospheric winter echo (PMWE) formation. The Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) was operated to detect PMWE with multiple beam directions to detect favorable launch conditions. A dedicated experiment configuration with five different beam positions was used to point the radar beam along the planned trajectory of the payload. This special radar experiment allowed to obtain basic information about the spatial structure of the PMWE and its dynamical behavior around the flight of the two rockets. PMWE with signal strengths between 10−17 and 10−15 m−1 have been observed by MAARSY during the whole campaign period, starting with a moderate occurrence at the beginning which decreased towards the end of the campaign. Furthermore real common-volume observations by rocket instruments and radar soundings have been carried out at PMWE altitudes on up-leg and down-leg of the rocket flights. The Saura MF radar was operated during both flights probing the mesosphere with a multiple beam scan experiment to derive horizontal winds and electron density profiles. The obtained PMWE characteristics as signal strength and spectral width of the received radar signals as well as estimated horizontal winds and electron densities are presented with particular emphasis to the launch times of the sounding rockets.

Can VHF radars at polar latitudes measure mean vertical winds in the presence of PMSE?

Abstract. Mean vertical velocity measurements obtained from radars at polar latitudes using polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSEs) as an inert tracer have been considered to be non-representative of the mean vertical winds over the last couple of decades. We used PMSEs observed with the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) over Andøya, Norway (69.30∘ N, 16.04∘ E), during summers of 2016 and 2017 to derive mean vertical winds in the upper mesosphere. The 3-D vector wind components (zonal, meridional and vertical) are based on a Doppler beam swinging experiment using five beam directions (one vertical and four oblique). The 3-D wind components are computed using a recently developed wind retrieval technique. The method includes full non-linear error propagation, spatial and temporal regularisation, and beam pointing corrections and angular pointing uncertainties. Measurement uncertainties are used as weights to obtain seasonal weighted averages and characterise seasonal mean vertical velocities. Weighted average values of vertical velocities reveal a weak upward behaviour at altitudes ∼84–87 km after eliminating the influence of the speed of falling ice. At the same time, a sharp decrease (increase) in the mean vertical velocities at the lower (upper) edges of the summer mean altitude profile, which are attributed to the sampling issues of the PMSE due to disappearance of the target corresponding to the certain regions of motions and temperatures, prevails. Thus the mean vertical velocities can be biased downwards at the lower edge, and the mean vertical velocities can be biased upwards at the upper edge, while at the main central region the obtained mean vertical velocities are consistent with expected upward values of mean vertical winds after considering ice particle sedimentation.

Multi-static spatial and angular studies of polar mesospheric summer echoes combining MAARSY and KAIRA

Abstract. Polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSEs) have been long associated with noctilucent clouds (NLCs). For large ice particles sizes and relatively high ice densities, PMSEs at 3 m Bragg wavelengths are known to be good tracers of the atmospheric wind dynamics and to be highly correlated with NLC occurrence. Combining the Middle Atmosphere ALOMAR Radar System (MAARSY) and the Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array (KAIRA), i.e., monostatic and bistatic observations, we show for the first time direct evidence of limited-volume PMSE structures drifting more than 90 km almost unchanged. These structures are shown to have horizontal widths of 5–15 km and are separated by 20–60 km, consistent with structures due to atmospheric waves previously observed in NLCs from the ground and from space. Given the lower sensitivity of KAIRA, the observed features are attributed to echoes from regions with high Schmidt numbers that provide a large radar cross section. The bistatic geometry allows us to determine an upper value for the angular sensitivity of PMSEs at meter scales. We find no evidence for strong aspect sensitivity for PMSEs, which is consistent with recent observations using radar imaging approaches. Our results indicate that multi-static all-sky interferometric radar observations of PMSEs could be a powerful tool for studying mesospheric wind fields within large geographic areas.

First Simultaneous Rocket and Radar Detections of Rare Low Summer Mesospheric Clouds

AbstractOn 30 June 2016 a layer of dust, possibly meteoric smoke particles (MSPs), was observed with a rocket borne probe at 69.29°N, 16.02°E and altitudes of ~74 km where patchy thin cloud layers, detected with the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System, were present. The rocket traversed a layer with a net positive dust charge density of ~107 unit charges per cubic meters and a number density of neutral dust particles with sizes ≥4 nm of ~108 m−3. The positive charge density may require that elements that lower the photoelectric work function coat MSPs. The presence of this relatively large dust is consistent with smaller MSPs being swept out of the low mesospheric cloud region during the summer, while larger MSPs remain where their fall velocities equals the circulation updraught velocities. Large MSPs initially embedded in icy particles that subsequently sublimate may also fall until their fall velocities match the updraught velocities.

Observation of Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities and gravity waves in the summer mesopause above Andenes in Northern Norway

Abstract. We present observations obtained with the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) to investigate short-period wave-like features using polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSEs) as a tracer for the neutral dynamics. We conducted a multibeam experiment including 67 different beam directions during a 9-day campaign in June 2013. We identified two Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) events from the signal morphology of PMSE. The MAARSY observations are complemented by collocated meteor radar wind data to determine the mesoscale gravity wave activity and the vertical structure of the wind field above the PMSE. The KHIs occurred in a strong shear flow with Richardson numbers Ri < 0.25. In addition, we observed 15 wave-like events in our MAARSY multibeam observations applying a sophisticated decomposition of the radial velocity measurements using volume velocity processing. We retrieved the horizontal wavelength, intrinsic frequency, propagation direction, and phase speed from the horizontally resolved wind variability for 15 events. These events showed horizontal wavelengths between 20 and 40 km, vertical wavelengths between 5 and 10 km, and rather high intrinsic phase speeds between 45 and 85 m s−1 with intrinsic periods of 5–10 min.

High-resolution vertical velocities and their power spectrum observed with the MAARSY radar – Part 1: frequency spectrum

Abstract. The Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) installed at the island of Andøya has been run for continuous probing of atmospheric winds in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) region. In the current study, we present high-resolution wind measurements during the period between 2010 and 2013 with MAARSY. The spectral analysis applying the Lomb–Scargle periodogram method has been carried out to determine the frequency spectra of vertical wind velocity. From a total of 522 days of observations, the statistics of the spectral slope have been derived and show a dependence on the background wind conditions. It is a general feature that the observed spectra of vertical velocity during active periods (with wind velocity > 10 m s−1) are much steeper than during quiet periods (with wind velocity < 10 m s−1). The distribution of spectral slopes is roughly symmetric with a maximum at −5/3 during active periods, whereas a very asymmetric distribution with a maximum at around −1 is observed during quiet periods. The slope profiles along altitudes reveal a significant height dependence for both conditions, i.e., the spectra become shallower with increasing altitudes in the upper troposphere and maintain roughly a constant slope in the lower stratosphere. With both wind conditions considered together the general spectra are obtained and their slopes are compared with the background horizontal winds. The comparisons show that the observed spectra become steeper with increasing wind velocities under quiet conditions, approach a spectral slope of −5/3 at a wind velocity of 10 m s−1 and then roughly maintain this slope (−5/3) for even stronger winds. Our findings show an overall agreement with previous studies; furthermore, they provide a more complete climatology of frequency spectra of vertical wind velocities under different wind conditions. A meteoroid stream survey using meteor head echo observations from the Middle Atmosphere ALOMAR Radar System (MAARSY)

Results from a meteor head echo shower survey using the quasi continuous meteor observations of the high power large aperture radar MAARSY, located in northern Norway (69.30°N, 16.04°E) are presented. The data set comprises 760 000 head echoes detected during two and half years sensitive to an effective limiting masses below 10−8 kg. Using a wavelet shower search algorithm, we identified 33 meteor showers in the data set all of which are found in the IAU meteor shower catalog. We find ∼ 1% of all measured head echoes at these masses are associated with meteor showers. Comparison of shower radiants from this survey with the observation of the Canadian Meteor Orbit radar (CMOR) transverse scattering radar system shows generally good agreement, although there are large differences in the measured durations of some meteor showers. Differential mass indices (s) of ∼ 1.5–1.6 are measured for the Perseids (PER), Geminids (GEM) and Quadrantids (QUA) showers. The Orionids (ORI) show a much steeper mass index of 2.0, in agreement with other observations at small particle sizes, suggesting the Halleyid showers, in particular, are rich in very small meteoroids.

Long-term variations of polar mesospheric summer echoes observed at Andøya (69°N)

Polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE) are strong radar signals received at very high radar frequencies at altitudes between about 80 and 95 km at polar latitudes during summer. PMSE are caused by inhomogeneities in the electron density of the radar Bragg scale within the plasma of the cold summer mesopause region in the presence of negatively charged ice particles. Therefore, the occurrence of PMSE depends on the ionisation due to solar wave radiation and precipitating high energetic particle fluxes but also contains information about mesospheric temperature and water vapour content. Long-time observations of these echoes can be used to conclude on long-term changes of these atmospheric parameters. Continuous observations of PMSE have been carried out on the North-Norwegian island And/oya (69.3°N, 16.0°E) using the ALOMAR SOUSY radar (1994–1997), the ALWIN VHF radar (1999–2008) and the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System MAARSY (since 2011). Since both the ALWIN radar and MAARSY are calibrated systems, the received echo strength of PMSE from 17 years of mesospheric observations (1999–2016) could be converted into absolute signal power. This data series could be extended to the years 1994 until 1997 on the basis of signal-to-noise ratio values derived during the years between 1994 and 2008. Seasonal mean values of PMSE occurrence for the time period from 1 June until 31 July have been derived and the resulting 23 years long data set was analyzed in dependence on solar and geomagnetic activity as well as analyzed for long-term trends. The PMSE occurrence rate is positively correlated with the solar Lyman α radiation (however low significance level) and the geomagnetic Ap index. After elimination of the solar and geomagnetically induced parts using different regression analysis methods, the PMSE data show a significant (χ = 92%–97%) positive trend during the observation period 1994 until 2016.

Results of the first continuous meteor head echo survey at polar latitudes

We present the first quasi continuous meteor head echo measurements obtained during a period of over two years using the Middle Atmosphere ALOMAR Radar System (MAARSY). The measurements yield information on the altitude, trajectory, vector velocity, radar cross section, deceleration and dynamical mass of every single event. The large statistical amount of nearly one million meteor head detections provide an excellent overview of the elevation, altitude, velocity and daily count rate distributions during different times of the year at polar latitudes. Only 40% of the meteors were detected within the full width half maximum of the specific sporadic meteor sources. Our observation of the sporadic meteors are compared to the observations with other radar systems and a meteor input function (MIF). The best way to compare different radar systems is by comparing the radar cross section (RCS), which is the main detection criterion for each system. In this study we aim to compare our observations with a MIF, which provides information only about the meteoroid mass. Thus, we are using a statistical approach for the elevation and velocity dependent visibility and a specific mass selection. The predicted absolute count rates from the MIF are in a good agreement with the observation when it is assumed that the radar system is only sensitive to meteoroids with masses higher than one microgram. The analysis of the dynamic masses seems to be consistent with this assumption since the count rate of events with smaller masses are low and decrease even more by using events with relatively small errors.

Simultaneous optical and meteor head echo measurements using the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY): Data collection and preliminary analysis

The initial results of a two year simultaneous optical-radar meteor campaign are described. Analysis of 105 double-station optical meteors having plane of sky intersection angles greater than 5° and trail lengths in excess of 2km also detected by the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) as head echoes was performed. These events show a median deviation in radiants between radar and optical determinations of 1.5°, with 1/3 of events having radiant agreement to less than one degree. MAARSY tends to record average speeds roughly 0.5km/s and 1.3km higher than optical records, in part due to the higher sensitivity of MAARSY as compared to the optical instruments. More than 98% of all head echoes are not detected with the optical system. Using this non-detection ratio and the known limiting sensitivity of the cameras, we estimate that the limiting meteoroid detection mass of MAARSY is in the 10−9–10−10kg (astronomical limiting meteor magnitudes of +11 to +12) appropriate to speeds from 30 to 60km/s. There is a clear trend of higher peak RCS for brighter meteors between 35 and −30 dBsm. For meteors with similar magnitudes, the MAARSY head echo radar cross-section is larger at higher speeds. Brighter meteors at fixed heights and similar speeds have consistently, on average, larger RCS values, in accordance with established scattering theory. However, our data show RCS ∝ v/2, much weaker than the normally assumed RCS ∝ v3, a consequence of our requiring head echoes to also be detectable optically. Most events show a smooth variation of RCS with height broadly following the light production behavior. A significant minority of meteors show large variations in RCS relative to the optical light curve over common height intervals, reflecting fragmentation or possibly differential ablation. No optically detected meteor occurring in the main radar beam and at times when the radar was collecting head echo data went unrecorded by MAARSY. Thus there does not appear to be any large scale bias in MAARSY head echo detections for the (comparatively) larger optical events in our dataset, even at very low speeds.

VHF antenna pattern characterization by the observation of meteor head echoes

Abstract. The Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) with its active phased array antenna is designed and used for studies of phenomena in the mesosphere and lower atmosphere. The flexible beam forming and steering combined with a large aperture array allows for observations with a high temporal and angular resolution. For both the analysis of the radar data and the configuration of experiments, the actual radiation pattern needs to be known. For that purpose, various simulations as well as passive and active experiments have been conducted. Here, results of meteor head echo observations are presented, which allow us to derive detailed information of the actual radiation pattern for different beam-pointing positions and the current health status of the entire radar. For MAARSY, the described method offers robust beam pointing and width estimations for a minimum of a few days of observations.
