The battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system, composed of energy-type and power-type storage devices, is essential to improve energy storage systems' comprehensive performance and economy significantly. The current research uses a convenient and economical microwave-assisted heating method to describe the preparation of NiSe2@NC nanocomposites with a core-shell carbon encapsulation structure. When used as an electrode material for power-type storage devices (Supercapacitors, SCs), the optimized NiSe2@NC-1-3 can achieve 555.7 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. The assembled asymmetric NiSe2@NC//AC has a wide operating voltage of 1.6 V and maintains 92.73 % durability after 10,000 cycles. For energy-type storage devices (Sodium-ion battery, SIBs) from the NiSe2@NC-1-3 electrode material exhibits a capacity of 384.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, a good rate capability (298.8 mAh g−1 at 5.0 A g−1), and excellent cycling life (311.7 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 for 1200 cycles). Considering the exceptional electrochemical performance of the NiSe2@NC nanocomposite in both power-type and energy-type storage devices, the rational design of this work will provide a new sight for the construction of a battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system which will accelerate the rapid development of the world's energy storage.
