Changes in the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of High Manganese Steel by High Heat Input Welding and General Welding Processes

The demand for liquefied-natural-gas-fueled tanks on ships is growing in accordance with IMO 2020 regulations. The use of high manganese steel has increased recently, as this material can be applied at cryogenic service temperatures according to IGF code and has economic advantages over other materials. In this study, the high heat input welding process, which involves one-side submerged arc welding (SAW) welding with cut wire, is investigated to increase the productivity of high manganese fuel tank welding. The Flux cored arc welding and SAW welding processes are also evaluated and compared with the high heat input welding process. The mechanical properties of high manganese steel satisfied the class requirements and no precipitates were found in the weldment and heat-affected zone.

Research of Deformation Law on High Manganese Steel with Different Alloy Composition

The organizations and phase composition after forging and heat treatment of the stacking fault energy for the three high manganese steel with 2.99 mJ/m2,7.9 mJ/m2and23 mJ/m2 were observed. The study found: the exclusion of the impact of the martensitic transformation can produce 18Mn high manganese TRIP or TWIP effect after deformation. Through observation and calculation, it found C, Al's content of alloying elements on the grain sizes less affected, but the starting temperature of martensitic transformation and layer greatly affects high manganese wrong size possible. Through analysis, found C, Al decides that the high content of alloying elements manganese organization original phase composition and deformation mechanism; organizations γ + ε-M + α'-M high manganese TRIP effect occurs, organizations γ + ε-M's high manganese TRIP effect occurs, tissue TWIP effect of high manganese steel γ.

Microstructural evolution of high manganese steel solidified under superhigh pressure

The microstructure of high manganese steel solidified under 6GPa was examined by using OM, FEGSEM and TEM for analysis of influences of high pressure on phase transformation and the morphology of carbides. The results indicate that the microstructure consisting of complete equiaxed dendrites, the mean dendrite arm spacing of which was ~18μm, was remarkably refined under 6GPa. The change of the morphology of carbides from needle-like and rhombic carbide (M3C) to nodulized cubic carbide (M23C6) was observed by TEM, which is associated with the undercooling and distribution of trace elements of manganese. The diameter of spheroidal carbides is approximately between 150nm and 200nm.

Failure mechanism and worn surface microstructure of high manganese steel and bainite steel crossings

With early failed high manganese steel and bainite steel crossings on actual railway line as the study object,the microstructure changes in the worn surface layer of the crossings are investigated by using metallurgical microscopy,SEM,TEM, M(?)ssbaner spectroscopy.In the mean time the failure mechanisms of the crossings are analyzed.The research results indicate that the microstructure in the worn surfaces of both crossings changes to nanocrystalline,and the carbon atoms get together in the worn surface of the high manganese steel crossing in service.The failure mechanism of the high manganese steel crossing is wear,collapse deformation and fatigue spalling,however,the failure mechanism of the bainite steel crossing is wear,hydrogen induced brittle spalling.Accordingly,some new methods are put forward to increase the lifetime of the crossings and enhance the safety of the railway system.
