The Effect of Cu Content on the Microstructure and Properties of the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Al-Cu Alloy

Al-Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of aerospace due to its excellent performance. In this paper, deposits with different Cu contents were prepared by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of Al-Cu alloy was investigated by metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that both the number and size of the precipitated θ phases (Al2Cu) in the as-deposited material increase with the increase of Cu content. After the T4 treatment, the solid solution amount of Cu in the matrix showed a trend of first increasing and then remaining stable. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, as the Cu content increased, the number and size of the remaining θ phases both increased. In the peak ageing state, the amount of precipitated θ' phase showed a trend of increasing and then remaining stable. After the T6 treatment, the mechanical properties showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of the content of Cu. When the Cu content was 5.65%, the deposit achieved the best mechanical properties, and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties disappeared. The tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reached 538 MPa, 478 MPa, and 10.5%, respectively. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, the anisotropy of mechanical properties was obvious, and the fracture mode of the vertical specimen changed from ductile fracture to brittle fracture.

INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF ADDING CU ON AL ALLOYS FOR WEAR AND FRICTION PROPERTIES

In this study, Cu alloys in different ratios (2, 4, 6 and 8%) were added into the commercial purity (99.8% Al) aluminum alloys and Al-Cu alloys were prepared by sand mold casting method. In the current study, chemical composition is determined by spectrometer, density and hardness are measured, the wear and friction behavior are investigated, and finally microstructure of Al-Cu alloys is examined by optical microscopy. Wear tests were made under dry sliding, at pin-on-disk wear device and against X40CrMoV5-1 steel disc. In wear tests, 20, 40 and 60N loads, 0.5-1.5 m/s sliding speed were used, respectively. As a result, coefficient of friction of pure Al and Cu filled Al alloys increased by load and sliding speed. Wear ratio decreased with load while increased by the sliding speed. Wear rates of Cu filled Al alloy were determined about 10 -13 m 2 /N.

Effect of Magnetic Fields on the Resistance and Microstructure of Al-Cu Alloy during Solidification Processing

The resistance of Al-21%Cu alloy under no magnetic field, DC magnetic field and AC magnetic field from liquid to solid was measured by a four-probe method. The difference of resistance versus temperature curves (R-T curves) was analyzed. It is found that the R-T curves of Al-21%Cu alloy are monotone decreasing and have two obvious turning points. Under DC magnetic field, the liquidus and solidus temperatures of the alloy both decrease, while under AC magnetic field, the liquidus and solidus temperatures both increase. There is a good agreement between the microstructure of quenching sample and R-T curves. The mechanism of the effect of magnetic fields was discussed.

Shape control and solidification microstructure of Al-Cu alloys produced by Fused Spinning Deposition method

Using a process called Fused Spinning Deposition (FSD) Al-Cu alloy melt flowing out through a small nozzle located at the bottom of the quartz tube container was rapidly solidified in a tube form on a rotating copper substrate. The fusion weldability between layers, shape stability and microstructures of the tube specimens were investigated as a function of alloy composition, superheat and rotation speed of the substrate. Good weldability between the layers and steady shape forming were achieved with smaller superheat and higher rotation speed. Better shape stability was obtained for hypo-eutectic alloys. The microstructure of the tube specimens subjected to the fused spinning deposition process was found to consist of fine equiaxed grains and the specimen exhibited tensile strength 1.5 times higher than metal-mould cast alloys with a fine columnar structure. The solidification analysis showed that the equiaxed grain structure is formed as a result of the cyclic remelting and solidification process.
