Si microring resonator optical switch based on optical phase shifter with ultrathin-InP/Si hybrid metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor.

We propose a microring resonator (MRR) optical switch based on III-V/Si hybrid metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) optical phase shifter with an ultrathin InP membrane. By reducing the thickness of the InP membrane, we can reduce the insertion loss of the phase shifter, resulting in a high-quality-factor (Q-factor) MRR switch. By optimizing the device structure using numerical analysis, we successfully demonstrated a proof-of-concept MRR optical switch. The optical switch exhibits 0.3 pW power consumption for switching, applicable to power-efficient, thermal-crosstalk-free, Si programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).

Analysis of polymer electro-optic microring resonator switches

The structure and the principle for the polymer electro-optic microring resonator (MRR) switch are proposed as well as the transfer functions. The structural parameters are optimized; the transmission characteristics are analyzed including the output power, switching time, switching voltage, insertion loss, and crosstalk. When the operation voltage is 0 V, the insertion loss and crosstalk are ∼1.2 and −20.2 dB, respectively; when the operation voltage is 10.0 V, those are ∼0.35 and −20.0 dB, respectively. Furthermore, a novel method is presented for analyzing time-domain response of the device and the switching time is determined to be ∼10.71 ps. These results indicate the favorable switching functions of the designed device.

Optimum design of a polymer electro-optic microring resonator switch

Novel transfer functions are presented for a polymer electro-optic microring resonator switches. The resonating process of the light in the microring is simulated using the formulas. Then the optimization of the structural parameters is performed, and the characteristics are analyzed, such as the resonance time, output spectrum, operation voltage, insertion loss and crosstalk were analyzed. The simulation results show that the designed device exhibits favorable switching functions.
