Analysis of iodinated amino acids by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography using aliphatic amine as a cosurfactant

A novel microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was established for the separation and determination of iodinated amino acids using n-butylamine as a novel cosurfactant. By optimizing the type of oil phase, the type and concentration of surfactant, the concentration of cosurfactant and the type and concentration of buffer in the microemulsion system, the optimal conditions for the separation of organic iodines were determined to be 0.5% ethyl acetate, 0.6% SDS, 1.2% n-butylamine and 10 mM sodium borate. The efficient and rapid separation of the five analytes (3-iodo-L-tyrosine (MIT), 3, 5-Diiodo-L-tyrosine (DIT), 3, 5-Diiodo-L-thyronine (T2), 3, 3′, 5-Triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) and L-Thyroxine (T4)) was achieved under the optimal conditions. The reliability of the method was verified by measuring the precision, LOD, LOQ and recovery. The practicality of the MEEKC method was demonstrated by applying it to the determination of two iodotyrosines, MIT and DIT, in kelp. The analytical method established in this experiment will provide a reference for the study of iodotyrosines in other natural plants and food.

Estimation of the octanol–water distribution coefficient of acidic compounds by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography

The feasibility of extending the determination of the lipophilicity of partially ionized acids (log Do/w) by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) is tested. Theoretical considerations predict that a linear log Do/w vs. log k correlation can be obtained only when the neutral and ionic forms of an acid follow the same correlation equation and the slope of the correlation is unity. In practice, since the lipophilicity of the neutral acid is much higher than that of the ionic form and the correlation slope is not very different from 1, the general linear correlation for neutral compounds can be applied across most of the ionization range of the acid.The linear correlation between log Po/w and log k of 20 neutral solutes (calibration curve) has been established and extended to 6 acids used as models, tested across their full ionization range. log Do/w-pH, and log k-pH profiles have been obtained for these 6 acids, and plotted log Do/w against log k for any acid at any degree of ionization. Furthermore, the log Do/w of the acids has been estimated from the calibration curve and log k-pH profile, and compared to values in the literature determined using reference methods such as the shake-flask one. Accurate values have been obtained using the MEEKC method when the acids are in their neutral form or partially ionized (ionization degree, α < 0.995). However, this parameter is overestimated when the acids are highly or fully ionized (α ≈ 1). Finally, in order to test the applicability of this method, we have applied the same procedure to estimate log Do/w at pH = 7.4 (blood physiological pH) of a set of 30 additional compounds (including partially and fully ionized acids). The results at this pH follow the same trend observed in the 6 model acids, and validate the application of the method for Do/w determination, except when α is very close to 1.

New bioanalytical microemulsion Electrokinetic chromatography method for the simultaneous determination of Trifluridine with its metabolites and Tipiracil in rat plasma: Application to pharmacokinetic studies

A Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography method coupled with diode array detector (MEEKC-DAD) was developed for the first time and found to be efficient, sensitive, and selective for the simultaneous analysis of Trifluridine (FTD), and its metabolites 5-(trifluoromethyl) uracil (FTY) and 5-carboxy-2′-deoxyuridine (5CDU), and Tipiracil (TIP) in rat plasma. Sample pre-treatment involved a simple protein precipitation from plasma using acetonitrile. The separation was achieved using a fused silica capillary (65 cm total length, 55 cm effective length and 50 µm i.d.) and a microemulsion solution consisted of 1.66% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 0.91% heptane, 6.61% 1-butanol, and 90.72% borate buffer (20 mM, pH 9.5). Electrophoretic separation was carried out at 20 °C and 20 kV. The samples were injected for 40 s at 20 mbar and detected simultaneously at 205 nm. The electrophoretic parameters indicated that the developed MEEKC-DAD method permitted complete resolution of the analytes within 13 min. The developed method was fully validated according to the FDA guidelines for bioanalytical method validation. The method was linear in the range 200–4000 ng/ml for FTD, FTY, 5CDU, and 100–1000 ng/ml for TIP. The intra/inter-day accuracy and precisions were ≤4% for all drugs. Extraction recovery and stability were also assessed and were within acceptable range. After being validated, the method was applied for the determination of the studied drugs in plasma samples collected from rats injected intraperitoneally with a combination of FTD and TIP. The results obtained were used to study the pharmacokinetics of FTD with its metabolite and TIP in rat plasma.

Determination of antibiotics in feedstuff samples by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography using fullerene as additive.

A microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method was developed for the simultaneous detection and quantification of ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and oxytetracycline in feedstuff samples. The BGE composition was optimized by applying a Taguchi parameter design and consisted of phosphate 30mmol/L, Tween-80 0.01mmol/L, and fullerene 3μmol/L, and adjusted to pH 8.0; the addition of surfactant and fullerene modifies the mobility of the analytes improving their resolution. Theoretical studies showed π-π and van der Waals interactions between antibiotic molecules and fullerene used as a pseudostationary phase. Under optimal conditions, limits of detection ranged from 0.7 to 1.5 μg/g; the analytes were separated in less than 6min. The methodology proposed is useful for controlling and monitoring antibiotic residues in feedstuff samples.

Quantitative Assessment of Poorly Soluble Anticoagulant Rivaroxaban by Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography.

Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) is an electrophoretic methodology based on the separation of compounds by a microemulsionated electrolyte. There are few options for the evaluation of the stability and content of the oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban (RIV) in pharmaceutical formulations. RIV has low water solubility and undergoes ionization only under restricted pH conditions (pH < 1 or pH > 13), thus, hindering the application of free zone capillary electrophoresis as an analytical method. Therefore, the work aimed at developing and validating a stability-indicating MEEKC method for the analysis of RIV in pharmaceutical formulations. Separation was performed in a fused-silica capillary applying a voltage of 30 kV. The microemulsion system consisted of 13 mM tetraborate, pH 9.75 + 1.2% SDS + 1.0% ethyl acetate + 2.4% butanol. The linearity range was 25-150 μg mL-1, with r = 0.9982. Drug degradations were performed in acid and basic media (HCl 1 M and NaOH 0.1 M, respectively), oxidation with 3%H2O2, 60°C temperature and exposure to UV-C radiation. No interferences with RIV or internal standard peaks were detected. Method robustness was accessed through Plackett-Burman experimental design, after evaluation of model validity. Trueness values between 100.49 and 100.68% were obtained with repeatability. The method developed was found appropriate for quality control of RIV tablets, as a consistent analytical technique that is considered less damaging to the environment due to its low consumption of organic reagents.

Simultaneous Separation, Quantitation, and Determination of the Dissociation Constant of Five Components of Ixeris sonchifolia by Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography

This study established a highly effective and reliable method for the separation and quantitative determination of five pharmacodynamic active components of I. sonchifolia using microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC). The MEEKC conditions were investigated. The optimal running buffer (pH 9.25) consisted of 80 mmol/L Brij-35, 0.8% (v/v) n-heptane, 8% (v/v) 1- butanol, 25% (v/v) acetonitrile, 10 mmol/L sodium dihydrogen phosphate–10 mmol/L sodium borate at 25 kV voltage. The regression equations showed good linear relationships, with 0.61–7.76 µg/mL limit of detection and 2.04–25.85 µg/mL limit of quantitation. The established method was also accurate, with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations less than 4.78% and less than 6.27%, respectively. Recovery values ranged from 98.61% to 104.76%. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine the five compounds in Kudiezi injection samples. A MEEKC method without adding neutral markers was further established for dissociation constant (pKa*) measurement, and reliable pKa* values were obtained. Separation and Determination of Phenylpropanoid Glycosides in Rhodiola by Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography

A novel microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method for the simultaneous separation and quantitative determination of phenylpropanoid glycosides in Rhodiola L. was developed. The effects of many parameters influencing separation characteristics were optimized. Retention factor met rosarin<rosavin<rosin at the same 2-propanol concentration. Both selectivity and resolution of rosarin and rosavin increased with increasing 2-propanol content. The similar chemical structure led to a small difference in theoretical plates. The resolution of rosarin and rosavin showed greater improvements than rosavin and rosin with increasing buffer pH. According to the separation characteristics, the optimal running buffer was determined: 80 mmol/L sodium dodecyl sulfate, 1.0% n-heptane, 7.5% 1-buatnol, 22.5% 2-propanol, and 10 mmol/L sodium borate buffer at pH 9.25. Validation showed that this simple MEEKC method possesses feasible accuracy and precision. Furthermore, the developed method successfully quantified three phenylpropanoid glucosides in the Rhodiola rosea sample extracts and three oral liquids.

An integrated quality by design and mixture-process variable approach in the development of a capillary electrophoresis method for the analysis of almotriptan and its impurities

The development of a capillary electrophoresis (CE) method for the assay of almotriptan (ALM) and its main impurities using an integrated Quality by Design and mixture-process variable (MPV) approach is described. A scouting phase was initially carried out by evaluating different CE operative modes, including the addition of pseudostationary phases and additives to the background electrolyte, in order to approach the analytical target profile. This step made it possible to select normal polarity microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) as operative mode, which allowed a good selectivity to be achieved in a low analysis time. On the basis of a general Ishikawa diagram for MEEKC methods, a screening asymmetric matrix was applied in order to screen the effects of the process variables (PVs) voltage, temperature, buffer concentration and buffer pH, on critical quality attributes (CQAs), represented by critical separation values and analysis time. A response surface study was then carried out considering all the critical process parameters, including both the PVs and the mixture components (MCs) of the microemulsion (borate buffer, n-heptane as oil, sodium dodecyl sulphate/n-butanol as surfactant/cosurfactant). The values of PVs and MCs were simultaneously changed in a MPV study, making it possible to find significant interaction effects. The design space (DS) was defined as the multidimensional combination of PVs and MCs where the probability for the different considered CQAs to be acceptable was higher than a quality level π=90%. DS was identified by risk of failure maps, which were drawn on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations, and verification points spanning the design space were tested. Robustness testing of the method, performed by a D-optimal design, and system suitability criteria allowed a control strategy to be designed. The optimized method was validated following ICH Guideline Q2(R1) and was applied to a real sample of ALM coated tablets.

Analysis of phthalate esters in plastic-packaging bags by on-line sample stacking-microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography

Two convenient, effective, and reproducible methods using microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC)-normal stacking mode (NSM) and reversed electrode polarity stacking mode (REPSM) were developed for the on-line sample stacking of phthalate esters (PAEs). REPSM coupled with MEEKC increased the sensitivity of 937.5 to 7,143 times for four PAEs compared to the conventional MEEKC. The separating conditions in the MEEKC method were studied, and many factors influencing the two sample stacking processes were investigated in detail. The optimum sample matrices for the two stacking methods were as follows: 30 mmol/L sodium cholate (SC) and 30.0 mmol/L borate (pH 8.5). Additionally, sample injections as large as 3.45 kPa x 40 s and 3.45 kPa x 90 s were applied for NSM-MEEKC and REPSM-MEEKC, respectively. The linear relationship and reproducibility were also examined. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits (S/N = 3) of the PAEs were in the ranges of 0.021 - 0.33 mg/L and 0.7 - 4 microg/L for NSM-MEEKC and REPSM-MEEKC, respectively. The proposed REPSM-MEEKC has been successfully applied to determine PAEs in plastic-packaging bags, and the spiked recoveries were in the range of 89.1% - 105.6% with satisfactory results.

Separation of 5-Lipoxygenase Metabolites Using Cyclodextrin-Modified Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography and Head Column Field-Amplified Sample Stacking

A cyclodextrin-modified microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method employing head column field-amplified sample stacking was developed for the analysis of arachidonic acid metabolites of the lipoxygenase pathways. The influence of the concentration of boric acid, the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, the co-surfactant 1-butanol and the oil phase octane as well as the pH of the background electrolyte, the separation voltage and the separation temperature was studied. The optimized microemulsion consisting of 20 mM boric acid buffer, pH 9.0, 3.0 % (m/v) sodium dodecyl sulfate, 0.5 % (v/v) octane, 5.0 % (v/v) 1-butanol and 15 mM α-cyclodextrin enabled the separation of 20-hydroxy-leukotriene B4, leukotriene B4, 6-trans-leukotriene B4, 6-trans-12-epi-leukotriene B4, 5(S)-hydroxy-6-trans-8,11,14-cis-eicosatetraenoic acid, 12(S)-hydroxy-5,8,14-cis-10-trans-eicosatetraenoic acid, 15(S)-hydroxy-5,8,11-cis-13-trans-eicosatetraenoic acid as well as the internal standard prostaglandin B1 in <10 min employing a separation voltage of 17.5 kV at a temperature of 23 °C. A matrix peak from solid-phase extraction sample workup co-migrated with 5(S)-hydroxy-6-trans-8,11,14-cis-eicosatetraenoic acid affecting peak integration. The addition of 5 % (v/v) 2-propanol to the microemulsion resulted in the separation of this eicosatetraenoic acid and the matrix components at the expense of analysis time and peak resolution between the diastereomers 6-trans-leukotriene B4 and 6-trans-12-epi-leukotriene B4. In summary, the MEEKC method appeared to be especially suitable for the more polar arachidonic acid metabolites.

Quantification of the level of fat-soluble vitamins in feed based on the novel microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method

Simultaneous quantification of liposoluble vitamins is not a new area of interest, since these compounds co-determine the nutritional quality of food and feed, a field widely explored in the human and animal diet. However, the development of appropriate methods is still a matter of concern, especially when the vitamin composition is highly complex, as is the case with feed designated for laboratory animals, representing a higher health and microbiological status. A method combining microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) with liquid-liquid extraction was developed for the determination of four fat-soluble vitamins in animal feed. A separation medium consisting of 25 mmol L⁻¹ phosphate buffer (pH 2.5), 2-propanol, 1-butanol, sodium dodecyl sulfate and octane allowed the simultaneous determination of vitamins A, D, E and K within a reasonable time of 25 min. The polarity of the separation voltage was reversed in view of the strongly suppressed electro-osmotic flow, and the applied voltage was set at 12 kV. The fat-soluble vitamins were separated in the order of decreasing hydrophobicity. It was proved that the proposed MEEKC method was sufficiently specific and sensitive for screening fat-soluble vitamins in animal feed samples after their sterilization.

Comparison of HPLC and MEEKC for Miconazole Nitrate Determination in Pharmaceutical Formulation

A simple solid phase extraction (SPE) method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using UV detector and microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) has been developed and compared for the quantitative determination of miconazole nitrate in pharmaceutical formulation. For HPLC method, two parameters were optimized, namely, the wavelength and the mobile phases. The optimized condition was at the 225 nm wavelength and the mobile phase of ACN:MeOH (90:10 v/v). There are seven MEEKC parameters that were optimized, in this research, which were applied to voltage, temperature, wavelength, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration, buffer pH, buffer concentration and butan-1-ol concentration. The optimum MEEKC condition was obtained using 86.35 % (w/w) 2.5 mM borate buffer pH 9, 0.25 % (w/w) SDS, 0.8 % (w/w) ethyl acetate, 6.6 % w/w butan-1-ol and 6.0 % (w/w) acetonitrile. The combination of SPE using a diol column with HPLC–UV and the MEEKC methods were successfully applied for the determination of miconazole nitrate in a pharmaceutical formulation with the recovery percentage of 98.35 and 92.50 %, respectively.

Analysis of Volatile Components in Curcuma Rhizome by Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography

Volatile chemicals are a group of very important compounds in natural products. Curcuma rhizome, which contains many bioactive volatile compounds, is a traditional Chinese medicine that has long been used for the treatment of several diseases. In the present study, a microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method was developed for the analysis of four volatile components in Curcuma rhizome, including germacrone, furanodiene, curcumenol and curdione. Experimental parameters, including the pH, type and concentrations of background electrolyte, and microemulsion compositions (type and concentrations of surfactant, co-surfactant and oil phase) were intensively investigated. Finally, the primary compounds in the methanol extract of Curcuma rhizome were separated within 30 min using a running buffer composed of 2.31% w/v (80 mmol/L) sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 0.91% w/v (80 mmol/L) 1-octane, 6.95% w/v (937.5 mmol/L) 1-butanol and 1.88% w/v (312.5 mmol/L) propanol in a 5-mM borate buffer (pH 8.1). The contents of the four investigated compounds were determined in the rhizome from C. phaeocaulis. The results showed that the developed MEEKC method provided an alternative tool for the analysis of volatile components, especially those of heat-sensitive compounds from natural products.

Mixture-process variable approach to optimize a microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method for the quality control of a nutraceutical based on coenzyme Q10

In recent years, multivariate optimization has played an increasing role in analytical method development. ICH guidelines recommend using statistical design of experiments to identify the design space, in which multivariate combinations of composition variables and process variables have been demonstrated to provide quality results. Considering a microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method (MEEKC), the performance of the electrophoretic run depends on the proportions of mixture components (MCs) of the microemulsion and on the values of process variables (PVs). In the present work, for the first time in the literature, a mixture-process variable (MPV) approach was applied to optimize a MEEKC method for the analysis of coenzyme Q10 (Q10), ascorbic acid (AA), and folic acid (FA) contained in nutraceuticals. The MCs (buffer, surfactant–cosurfactant, oil) and the PVs (voltage, buffer concentration, buffer pH) were simultaneously changed according to a MPV experimental design. A 62-run MPV design was generated using the I-optimality criterion, assuming a 46-term MPV model allowing for special-cubic blending of the MCs, quadratic effects of the PVs, and some MC-PV interactions. The obtained data were used to develop MPV models that express the performance of an electrophoretic run (measured as peak efficiencies of Q10, AA, and FA) in terms of the MCs and PVs. Contour and perturbation plots were drawn for each of the responses. Finally, the MPV models and criteria for the peak efficiencies were used to develop the design space and an optimal subregion (i.e., the settings of the mixture MCs and PVs that satisfy the respective criteria), as well as a unique optimal combination of MCs and PVs.

Rapid analysis of caffeine in “smart drugs” and “energy drinks” by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC)

A novel method based on microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) with diode array detection (DAD) for rapid determination of caffeine in commercial and clandestine stimulants, known as "energy drinks" and "smart drugs", is described. Separations were carried out in 50 cm × 50 μm (ID) uncoated fused silica capillaries. The optimized buffer electrolyte was composed of 8.85 mM sodium tetraborate pH 9.5, SDS 3.3% (w/v), n-hexane 1.5% (v/v) and 1-butanol 6.6% (v/v). Separations were performed at a voltage of 20 kV. Sample injection conditions were 0.5 psi, 3 s. Diprofilline was used as internal standard. The determination of the analytes was based on the UV signal recorded at 275 nm, corresponding to the maximum wavelength of absorbance of caffeine, whereas peak identification and purity check was performed on the basis of the acquisition of UV radiation between 200 and 400 nm wavelengths. Under the described conditions, the separation of the compounds was achieved in 6 min without any interference from the matrix. Linearity was assessed within a caffeine concentration range from 5 to 100 μg/mL. The intra-day and inter-day precision values were below 0.37% for migration times and below 9.86% for peak areas. The present MEEKC method was successfully applied to the direct determination of caffeine in smart drugs and energy drinks.

Use of a Single Capillary Electrophoresis Method as a Routine Identity Test for Batch Release of a Range of Pharmaceutical Products

Two independent and orthogonal analytical methods are required when performing identity testing of pharmaceutical products during routine release testing. A microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method has been developed and validated for routine use as an identity test to release various pharmaceutical products including tablets, capsules and creams. Implementation of the method involved optimisation of parameters to achieve reliable routine operation. Rinsing procedures, in particular, were found to be essential to obtain consistent profiles and migration times. The method has replaced, and offers the potential to replace, a number of methods including HPLC and IR due to the considerable cost and time savings obtained through its use. This method has been successfully approved by the US FDA as a part of 2 New Drug Applications, is registered in Japan, and is in routine QA use within a factory environment.

Impurity profiling of dexamphetamine sulfate by cyclodextrin‐modified microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography

A CD-modified microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method has been developed and validated for dexamphetamine sulfate which allows the simultaneous determination of charged and uncharged impurities of the drug including the levorotary (R)-enantiomer. The optimized background electrolyte consisted of 1.5% w/w SDS, 0.5% w/w ethyl acetate, 3.5% w/w 1-butanol, 2.5% w/w 2-propanol and 92% w/w 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 3.0, containing 5.5% w/w sulfated β-CD. Separations were performed in a 50.2/40 cm, 50 μm id fused silica capillary at a temperature of 20°C and an applied voltage of -14 kV. Carbamazepine was used as internal standard. The assay was validated in the range of 0.1-1.0% for the related substances and 0.1-5.0% for levoamphetamine based on a concentration of 3 mg/mL of dexamphetamine sulfate. The LOD of all analytes ranged between 0.05 and 0.2%. In commercial samples of dexamphetamine sulfate, levoamphetamine was found at concentrations between 3.2 and 3.8%, whereas none of the other impurities could be detected.

Determination of Octanol–Water Partition Coefficients by MEEKC Based on Peak-Shift Assay

A novel microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method based on peak-shift assay (p-s MEEKC) has been developed for the determination of octanol–water partition coefficients (log P o/w) of compounds. The log P o/w values of 12 compounds were determined. The RSD of obtained values were less than 5.0% except 4-tert-butylphenol (RSD = 5.9%). All log P o/w values of the investigated compounds measured by p-s MEEKC were within 0.51 logarithm unit variation as compared to the literature values, with mean difference of 0.27. Compared to the conventional MEEKC method, the novel method does not suffer from the deficiencies related to the reference compounds and migration time of microemulsion phase, and showed the potential of being an alternative method for the determination of log P o/w values of compounds without reference compounds.

Comparison of chiral electrophoretic separation methods for phenethylamines and application on impurity analysis

A chiral microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography method has been developed for the separation of the enantiomers of the phenethylamines ephedrine, N-methylephedrine, norephedrine, pseudoephedrine, adrenaline (epinephrine), 2-amino-1-phenylethanol, diethylnorephedrine, and 2-(dibutylamino)-1-phenyl-1-propanol, respectively. The separations were achieved using an oil-in-water microemulsion consisting of the oil-component ethyl acetate, the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate, the cosurfactant 1-butanol, the organic modifier propan-2-ol and 20 mM phosphate buffer pH 2.5 as aqueous phase. For enantioseparation sulfated β-cyclodextrin was added. The method was compared to an already described CZE method, which made use of heptakis(2,3-di- O-diacetyl-6- O-sulfo)-β-cyclodextrin (HDAS) as chiral selector. Additionally, the developed method was successfully applied to the related substances analysis of noradrenaline, adrenaline, dipivefrine, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine monographed in the European Pharmacopoeia 6.

Analyses of Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs in Environmental Water Samples with Microemulsion Electrokinetic Chromatography

In this study, a microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was used to analyze ten non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in water samples. The type and ratio of organic modifiers were found to be the predominant influences on the NSAIDs separation. Subsequently, field-amplified sample injection was coupled with this MEEKC method in order to enhance the detection sensitivity. When both the acid plug (3 s) and water plug (5 s) were placed at the front of the capillary, and the acetonitrile (ACN) solvent was added to the water plug (10% ACN) and the sample matrix (15% ACN), the separation time was shortened to 15 min, as well as the limit of detection (LOD) of these NSAIDs was reduced to the range of 0.03 to 0.3 microg/L, which provided about a 1400-fold to 6100-fold enhancement in LOD. Finally, the proposed on-line concentration MEEKC method also successfully determined the NSAIDs residues in water samples after solid-phase extraction.
