Interpreting an Archaean paleoenvironment through 3D imagery of microbialites.

While stromatolites, and to a lesser extent thrombolites, have been extensively studied in order to unravel Precambrian (>539 Ma) biological evolution, studies of clastic-dominated microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are relatively scarce. The lack of a consolidated record of clastic microbialites creates questions about how much (and what) information on depositional and taphonomic settings can be gleaned from these fossils. We used μCT scanning, a non-destructive X-ray-based 3D imaging method, to reconstruct morphologies of ancient MISS and mat textures in two previously described coastal Archaean samples from the ~3.48 Ga Dresser Formation, Pilbara, Western Australia. The aim of this study was to test the ability of μCT scanning to visualize and make 3D measurements that can be used to interpret the biotic-environmental interactions. Fossil MISS including mat laminae with carpet-like textures in one sample and mat rip-up chips in the second sample were investigated. Compiled δ13C and δ34S analyses of specimens from the Dresser Fm. are consistent with a taxonomically diverse community that could be capable of forming such MISS. 3D measurements of fossil microbial mat chips indicate significant biostabilization and suggest formation in flow velocities >25 cm s-1. Given the stratigraphic location of these chips in a low-flow lagoonal layer, we conclude that these chips formed due to tidal influence, as these assumed velocities are consistent with recent modeling of Archaean tides. The success of μCT scanning in documenting these microbialite features validates this technique both as a first step analysis for rare samples prior to the use of more destructive techniques and as a valuable tool for gaining insight into microbialite taphonomy.

From the sea to the land: How microbial mats dominated marine and continental environments in the Ediacaran Camaquã Basin, Brazil

Precambrian sedimentary successions exposed worldwide record microbial deposits within both marine and continental strata. The Camaquã Basin records the transition from the Ediacaran to Cambrian periods in strata that comprise marine to lacustrine environments. The Camaquã Basin fossils comprise microbial mats and organic-walled microfossils in very close association. Carbonaceous laminae are common within the siltstone and mudstone layers and represent remarkably well-preserved Ediacaran microbial mats. These mats occurred along shallow marine through deep and shallow lake settings. The excellent preservation of these structures seems to be the product of calm hydrodynamic conditions and floodings. These hydrodynamic undisturbed environments allowed microbial mat growth. Besides, episodic floodings brought clay particles, which deposits guaranteed isolation from organic decomposition of mats. In general, the siltstones and mudstones record microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) that are typical from Ediacaran strata, such as wrinkle marks and elephant skin structures. Our research revealed that the occurrence of these structures is not limited to marine settings, as common in records from this period, but also present in lacustrine environments. Field studies were combined with optical and scanning electron microscopy plus energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses to demonstrate the vast occurrence of microbial mats along the deposits that registered the Camaquã Basin development. Geochemical data (whole-rock and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses) contribute to improving sedimentological descriptions, bringing light regarding the depositional environment where these microbial communities have developed. The excellent preservation state of organic matter on these marine and lacustrine siliciclastic sequences represents an impressive record in a Proto-Gondwana basin.

The Lower Cambrian deposits of the Le Rozel Formation (Normandy, NW France): Insight into a newly described ichnofossil assemblage

The rise of morphological complexity and taxonomic diversity of trace fossils during the Cambrian Period has been a prominent focus to track the evolution and diversification of early animals. Here, we present a newly described trace fossil assemblage from the lower Cambrian Le Rozel Formation in Normandy (Northwestern France) composed of the following ichnogenera: Archaeonassa, Bergaueria, Helminthoidichnites, Helminthopsis, Nereites, Psammichnites, and Treptichnus. Trace fossils are exquisitely preserved on top of strata (i.e., epirelief), and are distributed through the entire thickness of the siliciclastic succession of about 200 m. This thick sedimentary succession shows sedimentary environments with ripples generated by unidirectional current processes or by oscillatory processes, such as hummocky cross-stratification (HCS) storm facies, tidal facies with flaser stratification, and unidirectional current ripples. In addition, syneresis cracks and microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) suggest that the Le Rozel Formation was deposited in a shallow marine shelf environment. New U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains suggests a late Ediacaran maximum deposition age of 549 ± 3 Ma. This dating is supplemented by the substantial preservation of the three-dimensional burrow systems (Treptichnus pedum) and the large sediment bulldozers (Nereites, Psammichnites). Collectively, our findings suggest that the trace fossils assemblage was deposited during the Terreneuvian Epoch, beneath the first archaeocyaths and the first trilobite-bearing facies from both other lower Cambrian Carteret and Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière Formation. The ichnofauna described from the Le Rozel Formation complements the worldwide trace fossil record around this critical time of life history.

THE MICROBIAL “FINGERPRINTS” FROM THE CONTINENTAL LOWER PERMIAN OF POLAND

ABSTRACT Microbes colonize sediment and alter its properties creating a bio-mineral medium. The microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are the fossil record of an interaction between the physical environment and such a medium. The present report documents bedding surface structures from the Cisuralian (Asselian) Sandstone Building Member (BSM) of the Słupiec Formation, a unit that outcrops in the south-western Poland, in the Sudetes Mountains. The BSM represents likely continental (fluvial) sedimentary settings. The sedimentary structures on bedding surfaces in the BSM are interpreted as the MISS. The observations of the bedding structures are supplemented with thin section data that support the microbial interpretation of the bedding surface structures. The Słupiec Formation MISS record supplements the global patchy fossil record of the post-Cambrian (Paleozoic) MISS from the non-marine settings.

Shadows of the past: An Ediacara-style taphonomic window in advent of Cambrian bioturbators

One of the hypotheses, explaining a sudden vanishing of the Ediacaran biota at the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition, correlates this phenomenon with a disappearance of specific taphonomical factors providing fossilization of soft-bodied organisms (‘Cheshire Cat’ hypothesis). The terminal Ediacaran-Lower Cambrian fossil record does reveal a progressive development of bioturbation and associated decrease of microbial mats, which played a crucial role in the late Precambrian ecosystems. But the tempo of the evolution of organism-sediment interactions significantly varied between different zones of marine basins. Hence, if the ‘Cheshire Cat’ hypothesis is correct, the sedimentary environments barely (if any) colonized by the burrowing eumetazoans might provide the unique interplay of conditions for habitat and Ediacara-style preservation of soft-bodied organisms even in the early Cambrian. Herein we present the new carbon isotope data calibrating the Terreneuvian record in the Ura Uplift of South Siberia and also report fossilized soft-bodied organisms morphologically-close to the Ediacaran holdfasts preserved in association with microbially-induced sedimentary structures in the Cambrian Stage 2 carbonate-siliciclastic Nokhtuisk Formation. Although the late Terreneuvian age, this marginal marine succession is poorly bioturbated and hosts the soft-bodied fossils in the intervals undisturbed by the burrowing organisms. Our study demonstrates the possibility of Ediacara-style preservation of soft-bodied organisms in specific habitat and taphonomic conditions until being replaced by the Cambrian endobenthos.

Ediacaran microbial mats and microbially induced sedimentary structures in lacustrine deposits, Arabo-Nubian Shield, Egypt

Photoautotrophic microbial mats flourished on the substrates of the Precambrian marine environments but are barely reported from non-marine settings. Extraordinarily preserved microbial mats and microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) have been reported from the Ediacaran lacustrine deposits of the Hammamat Group in the Arabian Nubian Shield, Egypt. Biogenicity of microbial mats is affirmed by sporadically preserved filamentous cyanobacteria, copious remains of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and considerable organic‑carbon content. Locally abundant and diversified assemblages of 11 types of MISS signify optimal paleoecological conditions for proliferous photoautotrophic microbenthic growth, biostabilization and binding activities in oligotrophic fresh-water lakes. Microbial mats and MISS are so far the only terrestrial example in fresh-water lakes during the Ediacaran, specifically between Marinoan and Gaskiers glaciations, and possibly the most diversified assemblages in non-marine realms. Extreme paleoecological stresses throughout the Precambrian and repeatedly during the Phanerozoic reveal that microbial mats were the safe haven—and a primary source of food and oxygen—for early aquatic multicellular organisms. Accordingly, biosignatures of microbial mats and MISS in the Ediacaran lakes prove that the Precambrian non-marine aquatic environments were as important as marine settings in the evolution of ancient life on Earth and possibly on other planets such as Mars.

Microbially induced sedimentary structures from the Ediacaran of Anti-Atlas, Morocco

The Eastern Anti-Atlas of Morocco hosts an early Ediacaran turbiditic series (Saghro Group) (630–600 Ma) unconformably overlain by thick late Ediacaran (580–550 Ma) terrestrial volcano-clastic formations (Ouarzazate Supergroup), with thin and geographically limited paralic shallow marine sedimentary rocks.This paper presents the first description of structures related to the former presence of extensive microbial mats developed in marine, fluvial, and lacustrine environments during the Ediacaran in the Eastern Anti-Atlas. These microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are largely found in well-laminated fine- to coarse-grained sandstone and sandy-carbonate. They also cover vast bedding planes and occur in almost all sedimentary successions. MISS types include: gas domes, wrinkle structures, reticulate patterns, overflips and roll-ups, multidirectional linear ridges, sand cracks and biolaminated deposits. Based on morphology and petrographic macro and microfabrics, these microbially induced structures are very similar to those of modern photosynthetic cyanobacteria mats. Together with previously reported stromatolites, these newly reported microbial mat structures could have played an important ecological role in stabilizing siliciclastic sediments, as well as sustaining localized zones of high oxygen production in the Ediacaran marine and terrestrial paleoenvironments of the Anti-Atlas. The widespread geographic distribution and consistent occurrence of microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) in fluvial and lacustrine sediments present compelling paleontological evidence supporting the extensive greening of the land surface during the late Precambrian period.

Signatures of Life Detected in Images of Rocks Using Neural Network Analysis Demonstrate New Potential for Searching for Biosignatures on the Surface of Mars.

Microorganisms play a role in the construction or modulation of various types of landforms. They are especially notable for forming microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). Such microbial structures have been considered to be among the most likely biosignatures that might be encountered on the martian surface. Twenty-nine algorithms have been tested with images taken during a laboratory experiment for testing their performance in discriminating mat cracks (MISS) from abiotic mud cracks. Among the algorithms, neural network types produced excellent predictions with similar precision of 0.99. Following that step, a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach has been tested to see whether it can conclusively detect MISS in images of rocks and sediment surfaces taken at different natural sites where present and ancient (fossil) microbial mat cracks and abiotic desiccation cracks were observed. The CNN approach showed excellent prediction of biotic and abiotic structures from the images (global precision, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively, 0.99, 0.99, and 0.97). The key areas of interest of the machine matched well with human expertise for distinguishing biotic and abiotic forms (in their geomorphological meaning). The images indicated clear differences between the abiotic and biotic situations expressed at three embedded scales: texture (size, shape, and arrangement of the grains constituting the surface of one form), form (outer shape of one form), and pattern of form arrangement (arrangement of the forms over a few square meters). The most discriminative components for biogenicity were the border of the mat cracks with their tortuous enlarged and blistered morphology more or less curved upward, sometimes with thin laminations. To apply this innovative biogeomorphological approach to the images obtained by rovers on Mars, the main physical and biological sources of variation in abiotic and biotic outcomes must now be further considered.

Ediacaran biota from Ougnat Massif (Eastern Anti-Atlas, Morocco): Paleoenvironmental and stratigraphic constraints

The Ediacaran period records the appearance of the first multicellular and complex organisms in Earth's history. Within the West African Craton, just a few simple discoidal structures have been previously reported within the supposed Ediacaran successions. Here, we describe for the first time a slightly diversified Ediacaran assemblage of micro- and macro-fossils from Ediacaran volcano-sedimentary rocks of Northwest Africa. Fossils occur in shallow water carbonate-bearing siliciclastic sediments of the Izelf Formation (567–550 Ma), in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas. Macrofossils are represented by Aspidella, ivesheadiomorphs and other problematic structures with putative biotic origin. The macrofossil assemblage is dominated by taphomorphs that indicate different degrees of preservation due to progressive decaying processes, possibly extending the effacement preservation mode outside of Avalonia assemblages. Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS), stromatolites and spheroidal microfossils are also reported. In particular, spheroidal microfossils may occur as isolated individuals or as concatenated spheres with potentially cell-division processes and were preserved through carbonate and silica permineralization. Morphologically, spheroidal microfossils are compared to sphaeromorph acritarchs and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria such as genus Thiomargarita. The depositional environment and age interval provide new information concerning paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental conditions of Ediacaran biota living on the West African Craton; thus, fills a gap in the Precambrian fossil record from the WAC.

Microbially induced sedimentary structures and the preservation of vertebrate tracks on the Colorado River delta in Lake Powell, Hite, Utah

Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) increase the preservation potential of vertebrate and invertebrate ichnofossils. The Colorado River forms a delta in Lake Powell at Hite, Utah, and the deltaic shoreline provides a natural laboratory to examine the development of MISS and their influence on vertebrate track preservation. Two types of MISS were identified: pustular and blister. Pustular MISS occur in proximity to the June 2020 high water line. The pustular morphology is characterized by mm-scale small mounds, or pimple-like shapes. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) examination identified preserved filamentous cyanobacteria intertwined with fine silt- and clay-sized sediment and well-preserved freshwater diatoms. Branta canadensis (Canada goose) tracks are well developed and they vary from single tridactyl tracks to trampled horizons. Blister MISS, in contrast to pustular MISS, are present in lower elevations, forming in deeper water, greater than 0.5 m. Blisters are mm- to cm-scale irregular mounds that consist of arching mats that are detached from the underlying sediment creating a pore space. Through time the blister mat mounds are destroyed by fragmentation due to desiccation combined with wind processes. FESEM and energy-dispersive spectroscopy system (EDS) analyses indicate the presence of filamentous cyanobacteria on the exterior and palisade Bacillus-type bacteria are in the interior of the blister arch, and gypsum crystals within the mat arch. Freshwater diatoms are present in both mat types. A single human track and multiple trackways of Canis latrans (coyote) were identified on the blister mats. Weakly impressed Canada goose tracks are present. Tracks cross cutting or modifying the pustular MISS have preserved MISS surface textures except in the heavily trampled areas, whereas tracks linked to the blister mat typically do not have reserved mat texture, and usually contain fragmented mat within the impression. Because of fluctuating lake levels and desiccation, these track types had a limited temporal window where they may be produced when moisture conditions permitted MISS development, about two months. Any vertebrates through the area out of the “track window” were not recorded in sediment and mat modification. Tracks imprinted on pustular MISS in lacustrine environments will have a high preservation potential if there are annual fluctuations in lake levels.

Microbial-mat colonization of modern gravel deposits in a siliciclastic coastal setting

ABSTRACTMicrobial mats are layered consortia of microorganisms colonizing surface sediments that alter their physical and chemical characteristics. The northern Patagonia coastline (Argentina) includes gravel deposits (termed rodados Patagónicos) accumulated during the Pleistocene and Holocene by high-energy hydrodynamic processes. In this area, surface sediments in a relict tidal channel (Paso Seco; 40° 38′ 27″ S, 62° 12′ 55″ W) are extensively colonized by microbial mats, appearing to overgrow exposed gravel deposits. To date, such substrates have not been reported as suitable for the development of microbial mats. The objectives of this paper are: 1) to describe the mechanisms of microbial baffling, trapping, and binding of sedimentary particles, and biostabilization that enable epibenthic microbial mats to develop on gravel substrates, 2) to relate microbial mat growth to a variety of hydrodynamic conditions, and 3) to describe resulting microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). Our hypothesis is that the alternation of episodic seawater flooding, stagnation, and draining with subsequent subaerial exposure and desiccation are the controlling factors for mat development on gravel. Once stagnant, mud-size sediment particles settle from suspension. At the same time, an initial biofilm may become established on the bottom, using the fine-grained material as substrate. Subsequently introduced particles are baffled, trapped, and bound into the developing biofilm matrix. During the Austral winter comparatively higher values for chlorophyll a and organic matter point towards increased growth of the microbial mat during this season. With increasing coherence, the developing microbial mat may encroach onto individual pebbles, ultimately engulfing them. Eventually, a mature, epibenthic microbial mat levels the sedimentary surface. Hydrodynamic reworking during flooding produces MISS such as mat chips and flipped-over mats.

Microbial, tidal, and storm activity in a macrotidal to shallow marine shelf environment during the Paleoproterozoic era

The Gordon Lake Formation (GLF) of the Paleoproterozoic Huronian Supergroup is a siliciclastic-dominated succession ranging from 300 to 1100 m in thickness. Lithostratigraphic and sedimentological analyses of the formation in the Bruce Mines and Flack Lake areas, and Killarney and Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater provincial parks, Ontario, Canada, revealed seven lithofacies, which comprise three distinct lithofacies associations. The lithofacies associations are subtidal nearshore, subtidal to shallow shelf, and mixed intertidal flat. A variety of structures interpreted to be biogenic in nature, including microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISSs) and stromatolites, are preserved, which support local microbial colonization in a tidally influenced marine environment. Wave, current, and tide-generated sedimentary structures, including symmetrical ripples, trough cross-beds, flaser and lenticular bedding, and mudstone drapes, are abundant in all study areas. Storm influence is suggested by normally graded deposits, mudstone rip-up clasts, and soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDSs), including load casts, ball-and-pillow structures, convolute bedding, and pseudonodules. Interbedding and interlamination of sandstone and mudstone units are present throughout the GLF and represent fluctuations in water level and energy, related to tidal and storm processes. A lowermost carbonate-rich unit may represent a period of low clastic influx. The contacts with the underlying Lorrain and overlying Bar River formations appear gradational. The depositional environment can be visualized as an open coast, shallow marine shelf that was influenced by microbial mats, tides, and storms.

Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) generated by episodic storm surges in a temperate coast

This study recognizes the creation of primary sedimentary structures in a modern environment that reports valuable insights into the role of microbiota in sculpting sedimentary structures, and it may explain many previously confusing sedimentary structures in the rock record. The research considered the frequent flooding events on a coastal sedimentary flat colonized by microbial mats and the effect produced by severe storm surge events. Large-scale microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) were created; thus, the interaction between meteorologic, oceanographic, and geomorphologic conditions necessary to form them was analysed. The study was developed in Paso Seco, Argentina (40°38′31” S - 62°12′54” W), a sedimentary flat behind a sand spit, coated by thick microbial mats recurrently affected by storm events. Water level measurements were recorded continuously for five years (measurement interval 10 min). The seawater inundations were related to synoptic weather maps and oceanographic parameters (wave height, period, and tides) to analyse the cause of storm surges. Two situations of severe storms were studied in 2018 and 2019. The inundation of the study area occurs when a cold front in association with a low-pressure centre in the Atlantic Ocean, moving in an SW-NE direction, produces strong SW winds higher than 45 km h−1 and wave height higher than 2 m. Strong winds and storm duration (two or three days) in co-occurrence with spring tides create an extreme erosional event that affects the sedimentary microbial flat. In sum, the interaction between storm surge, high tide, wave setups and wave heights in Paso Seco produces coastal hinterland flooding that creates meter-sized MISS such as roll-ups, erosional pockets, and remnants mats structures. The impact of storm surges on the coast is common and catastrophic in modern times but is challenging to identify in the sedimentary record. Therefore, the microbial structures presented here could help interpret high-energy events occurrence, favourable to assessing past environmental conditions.

The interplay of environmental constraints and bioturbation on matground development along the marine depositional profile during the Ordovician Radiation.

This study documents the distribution of matgrounds in a wide variety of environments recorded in the Ordovician Lashkerak and Ghelli Formations in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran in order to evaluate controls on their distribution along the marine depositional profile. Detailed facies analysis allowed differentiating three groups of facies associations in the Lower to Upper Ordovician deposits of the Lashkerak formation: (i) estuarine system; (ii) wave-dominated shoreface-offshore complex; and (iii) mixed river- and wave-influenced deltaic system. The Middle to Upper Ordovician deposits of the Ghelli formation are divided into two groups of facies associations: (i) tide-influenced deltaic succession and (ii) deep-water fan system. Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are present in deposits formed in the central estuarine basin (Lashkerak formation) and in proximal lobes and lobe fringes of deep-water turbidite fans (Ghelli formation). On the contrary, MISS are absent in deposits from the wave-dominated shoreface-offshore complex, river- and tide-dominated deltas, and various subenvironments of the incised wave-dominated estuary (i.e., bayhead delta and estuary mouth) and the deep-marine turbidite fan system (i.e., turbidite channel, slope, and outer lobe). The lack of evidence of mat-building microorganisms in the deltaic systems may have resulted from two factors: (1) high physico-chemical stressors caused by river-induced processes, and (2) increase in degree of sediment disturbance, biodiffusion, and bioirrigation by burrowing organisms. Formation of microbial mats in the wave-dominated shoreface-offshore complex was inhibited by the activity of an abundant and diverse infauna capable of reworking the sediment. Our analysis shows that the spatial distribution of microbial mats was controlled by an interplay of environmental factors and innovations in animal-substrate interactions, mostly expressed by secular changes in bioturbation. This study supports the notion that the agronomic revolution was diachronic, with marginal-marine and deep-sea ecosystems lagging behind shallow-marine settings.

A laminated microbial ecosystem at the summit of the Cambrian Explosion

Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are microbial traces in sandy deposits. They are formed by various modes of microbial behaviour in response to the prevailing physical dynamics in shallow marine environments since the early Archean. The Guojiaba Formation (Cambrian Stage 3), composed of laminated sandstones, siltstones, and mudstones mainly, is characterized by two units of MISS (biolaminite) in the north margin of the Yangtze Block. Biolaminite arises from the microbial growth and it is characterized by alternation of light layers and dark layers in polished slides and the thin sections. The light layers represent the normal background deposition where the development of microbial community is inhibited; whereas, the dark layers are rich in organic materials. SEM identified 7 types of morphologies of microorganisms of a microbenthic community accompanied by a large number of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) and pyrite framboids from the dark layers. The occurrence of the Biolaminite in the Guojiaba Formation indicates a complex microbial ecosystem within epibenthic microbial mats in a relatively semi-closed to closed sedimentary environment with a high salinity, such as a lagoon, at the summit of the Cambrian Explosion.

Characteristic and paleoenvironment significance of microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) in terrestrial facies across P-T boundary in Western Henan Province, North China

AbstractWe report varied microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS), and other sedimentary surface textures, from the Induan (Early Triassic) Sunjiagou Formation and Liujiagou Formation in the Xingyang, Dengfeng, Jiyuan and Yiyang areas, western Henan Province, North China. Microanalysis shows that these MISS are characterized by a U-shaped structure, thin clayey laminae, and discontinuous mica sheet that are arranged parallel to the bedding plane, as well as directionally oriented quartz grains floating in lamina, which are indicative of a biogenic origin. The MISS of the studied area were probably affected by four main factors, including the end-Permian mass extinction, the megamonsoon, the adapted sedimentary environment, and the sediment supply, and they possess significant stratigraphic correlation. Abundant microbial-related sedimentary structures from the study area indicate that continental ecosystems were severely devastated in the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic biocrisis. These sedimentary structure assemblages, including MISS, red beds, conglomerate layers, and calcareous concretions in the western Henan Province, show a specific, post-extinction continental ecosystem that was characterized by microflora dominance, monotonous and rare fossils, extreme hot climate, soil ecosystem devastation, and poor vegetation.

Abundant well‐preserved microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are exposed in the Xinji Formation, the earliest Cambrian sedimentary unit in North China. The MISS herein are categorized into microbial mat growth structure (wrinkle structures and mat biolaminites) and microbial mat destruction structure (sand cracks and ‘Manchuriophycus’ structures). The MISS developed on the surface of thick quartz sandstones, as well as the lithologic interface between thin sandstone and mudstone. Most of the sand cracks lack the direct evidence of microbial activities, whereas the mat biolaminites that consist of filamentous mica, clay minerals, and quartz grains may record the in situ microbial mats. The Xinji Formation deposited along with the Cambrian explosion when biodiversity and abundance of metazoan stayed relatively low. Besides, the intermittently exposed tidal flats are not the ideal place for early life, which exacerbated the ecological vacuum therein. The massive occurrence of the MISS in the siliciclastic rocks of the Xinji Formation indicated that the tidal flat setting during this period was still beneficial for accumulations of microbial mat because of the deficient grazing metazoans and weak bioturbation.

Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures in Clastic Deposits: Implication for the Prospection for Fossil Life on Mars.

Abundant and well-preserved fossil microbenthos occurs in siliciclastic deposits of all Earth ages, from the early Archean to today. Studies in modern settings show how microbenthos responds to sediment dynamics by baffling and trapping, binding, biostabilization, and growth. Results of this microbial-sediment interaction are microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). Successful prospection for rich MISS occurrences in the terrestrial lithological record requires unraveling genesis and taphonomy of MISS, both of which are defined only by a narrow range of specific conditions. These conditions have to coincide with high detectability which is a function of outcrop quality, bedding character, and rock type. Assertions on biogenicity of MISS morphologies must be based on the presence of microbially induced sedimentary textures (MIST), which are MISS-internal textures comprising replacement minerals arranged into microscopic biological morphologies, ancient carbonaceous matter, trace fossils, and geochemical signals. MISS serve as possible templates for the decryption of ancient life-processes on Mars. This article closes with a perspective on selected deposits and ancient environments in Meridiani Planum, Gale Crater, and Jezero Crater, Mars, regarding their potential for MISS occurrences. The earlier hypothesis of structures on Mars as potentially being MISS is revised.

Benthic microbial mats from deep-marine flysch deposits (Oligocene Menilite Formation from S Poland): Palaeoenvironmental controls on the MISS types

Sedimentary structures produced by benthic microbial mats have been reported from various ancient shallow-marine deposits, but examples from deep-marine settings are rare. This study focusses on the microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) from fine-grained clastic deposits and carbonates of the Oligocene Menilite Formation that were deposited in a deep-marine environment periodically affected by distal turbidity currents. At the study location, the MISS-bearing deposits are represented by grey to black shales with intercalations of fine-grained sandstones, siltstones and limestones. The MISS were documented in thin sections and using scanning electron microscopy with elemental mapping. Four of the recognised MISS record periods of in-situ formation, which are attributed to a significant sedimentation slowdown, ranging approximately from a few weeks to more than a year. These four MISS include laterally continuous irregularly laminated layers, carbonaceous laminae regularly alternating with calcareous laminae, networks of thin carbonaceous laminae anastomosing between peloids, and irregularly laminated lenses occurring within siltstone-sandstone layers. The other MISS reveal signatures of erosion and redeposition by turbidity currents. They include small lenses representing mat chips and irregularly laminated lenses interfingering with the surrounding mudstone, which represent torn and re-established fragments of mats. The exceptional preservation of articulated fish skeletons that form Konservat-Lagerstätten within the studied succession is explained by the presence of epibenthic mats, which covered the fossil remnants. Microbial overgrowths protected fish carcasses against decay and floating, and facilitated precipitation of early diagenetic carbonates, which enabled fast fossilisation of the remnants.This study indicates that the interpretation of depositional conditions prevailing in a deep-marine setting may benefit considerably from the analysis of MISS. It also shows that the sedimentation rate of flysch deposits may be more variable than commonly assumed, as hiatus intervals are hidden within both hemipelagic deposits and amalgamated turbidite beds. The identification of various MISS types may be significant in distinguishing turbidites from hemipelagic deposits within homogenous muddy successions.
