Biotic vs abiotic origin of unusual features from Mesoproterozoic of Vindhyan Supergroup, India

Biogenic signatures in Precambrian rocks are often difficult to confirm and debatable. We present some unusual features associated with microbial-mat related structures (MRS) from the freshly-exposed rippled bed surface of 1.6 Ga old Chorhat Sandstone, Vindhyan Supergroup, India. The features discussed here, are present within intertidal to supratidal environments often affected by storms. One of the features includes ridge-groove couplets that run across the ripple crests. Locally, the ridge-groove couplet forms a braid-like pattern. Along the ripple troughs, the ridges are considerably long and maintain a uniform width on the mm scale. Another feature shows meandering grooves bordered by ridges. The grooves swerve, form loops, cut across older grooves, and branch up. None of them have comparable equivalents in the Precambrian record described thus far. The invariably uniform width of the ridges for both the two features cannot be compared with undersurface gas bubble migration, and the swerving and reversing nature of the grooves denies passive movement of any inorganic/organic masses under the influence of an external force. They seem to have been created by movement through a microbiota-rich surficial sediment. Such unusual features raise questions about the biosphere and biotic structures during the Boring Billion (1.8–0.8 Ga).

Authigenic kaolinite and sudoite in sandstones from the Paleoproterozoic Franceville sub-basin (Gabon)

The mineral paragenetic sequence of the 2.1-billion-year-old (Ga) Francevillian basin is important for understanding the diagenetic fluid history that allowed the preservation of the oldest ecosystem, including bacterial and more advanced forms of life in the FB 2 Member. However, a full characterization of the clay mineralogy of the FB 2 microbial mat-related structures (MRS) and associated host sediments (sandstones and black shales) is yet to be determined. Petrographic, microscopic, and mineralogical analyses reveal the concurrent presence of authigenic vermiform kaolinite and sudoite in the MRS and host sediments. Kaolinite formed along cleavages of altered muscovite and as pore-filling during early diagenesis, while sudoite likely precipitated at the expense of kaolinite that undergone secondary dissolution later in the diagenetic sequence. The formation of sudoite was promoted by fault-controlled acidic and oxidized brines that might have migrated during the Francevillian basin inversion. These results imply that the porosity and permeability of sedimentary rocks dominantly control the mineralogical assemblage of the FB 2 Member.

Paleoenvironmental significance of microbial mat-related structures and ichnofaunas in an Ordovician mixed-energy estuary, Áspero Formation of Santa Victoria Group, northwestern Argentina

ABSTRACTThe study on a unique set of outstandingly preserved sedimentary surface textures (SSTs) found in the late Tremadocian Áspero Formation of northwestern Argentina, coupled with the sedimentological and ichnological analysis, indicate that they were formed in the intertidal to supratidal setting of a mixed-energy estuary recording storm and tide sedimentation. We recognize seven types of SSTs: probably biotic microbial mat-related SSTs (Kinneyia, elephant skin, exfoliating sandy laminae), abiotic SSTs (elliptical scours and convex parallel ridges type I “wrinkle marks” sensuAllen 1985), and problematic (convex parallel ridges type II and dot matrix texture). Elliptical scours and convex parallel ridges type I show features which indicate reworking of a cohesive sandy substrate in an intertidal or supratidal setting. Abundance of biotic SSTs with specific associated trace fossils reflect matground development and mat-grazing ichnofaunas, indicating the suppression of intense, penetrative bioturbation due to intense physicochemical stress. The “dot matrix” texture, described here for the first time, consists of a regular horizontal network of millimeter-scale pits; it appears associated with exfoliating sandy laminae, probably reflecting a mat-related origin. Three facies associations are defined through paleoenvironmental analysis. Facies association 1 is dominated by high-energy sandy and bioclastic storm deposits with tidal flat facies, and corresponds to the outer bay of a mixed-energy estuary; highly impoverished Cruziana assemblages and distal expressions of the Skolithos Ichnofacies reflect high energy and sedimentation rate. Facies association 2 shows tidal-channel and tidal-flat facies with subordinated storm deposits, representing the middle bay; impoverished Cruziana assemblages dominated by simple facies-crossing structures, with high-density monogeneric opportunistic suites, evidence physicochemical stress associated with subaerial exposure, frequent episodic deposition, high water turbidity, and/or brackish water conditions in these relatively sheltered tidal flats. Facies association 3 is formed by interdistributary-bay deposits with intercalation of channel-fill deposits in the upper part, and represents the river-dominated bay-head delta; low degrees of bioturbation in fine-grained facies indicate brackish- to fresh-water conditions. SSTs are found in tidal flat facies of facies association 2; they indicate an intertidal to supratidal environment subject to localized conditions of intense physicochemical stress. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of SSTs converges with the one performed through sedimentological and ichnological analysis, producing a robust and more detailed paleoenvironmental model for the Áspero Formation. Our study highlights the use of SSTs as a tool for supporting and refining paleoenvironmental analysis.

Microbial mat-related structures shared by both siliciclastic and carbonate formations

Microbiota has always been the dominant life form, records of which are preserved in delicate forms within siliciclastic rocks. More pronounced record in the form of stromatolites possibly obscured the fact that many of the same delicate structures may be recognizable within carbonate rocks too. The Neoproterozoic Bhander Limestone in central India bears many such structures that are quintessentially similar to microbial mat-related structures reported from the Paleoproterozoic Chorhat Sandstone preserved within the same, Vindhyan Basin. Extensive microscopic, ultramicroscopic, and geochemical studies address the apprehension that such bedding plane structures in carbonate rocks could be merely weathering products. Trapping, binding and stabilitization of sediment by microbial mats are all evident. Preferred pyritization along the inferred, predefined microbial mats confirmed on the basis of EPMA (Electron Probe Microanalysis) results, and the enhanced carbon content along these mats layers and within suspected mat chips associated with them, are revealing. Raman spectroscopy, indeed, evinces enhanced kerogen content within both mats and mat chips.Interestingly, these microbial mat layers are recognized selectively within the lower of the two tiers of the Bhander Limestone. The lagoonal carbonate of the lower tier of the Bhander Limestone is muddy and contains a substantial proportion of silt-sized quartz grains that possibly impeded stromatolite growth. Stromatolites abound in the wave agitated upper tier of the Bhander Limestone which is dominated by oosparite. This paper provides evidence that the delicate microbial mat-related structures reported so far only from siliciclastic rocks can also be recognized within carbonate formations, and hopes to stimulate the search for additional such features, more preferably within carbonates originated in shallow and quiet water.

Palaeoenvironmental and biostratigraphic implications of microbial mat-related structures: Examples from the modern Gulf of Cambay and the Precambrian Vindhyan Basin, India

A stretch of the modern hypersaline coastal plain of the Gulf of Cambay was chosen to examine the distribution of the microbial mat-related structures (MRS) on siliciclastic sediments in the intertidal and supratidal zones. The abundance of MRS increases from the lower intertidal zone to the upper supratidal zone while the type of MRS records a systematic change. While the lower intertidal zone exhibits wrinkle structures, sieve-like surfaces and patchy ripples in places, the upper intertidal zone exhibits diverse MRS related to reduced current activity on the mat layer and intermittent exposure. MRS in the upper intertidal zone include wrinkle structures, sieve-like surfaces, gas domes, reticulated surfaces, multi-directional ripples, patchy ripples, rolled-up mat fragments, setulfs and occasional petee ridges and cracked mat surfaces. The lower supratidal zone is characterized by increased occurrence of petee ridges, gas domes and cracked mat surfaces compared to the upper intertidal zone. The upper supratidal zone is distinguished by the presence of abundant cracked mat surfaces, petee ridges, gas domes and wrinkle structures. The presence of cm-scale, disc-shaped microbial colonies (DMC) with a variety of internal structures is a unique feature of the Gulf of Cambay study area. While wrinkle structures occur in all the coastal zones, setulfs occur close to the boundary between the upper intertidal and lower supratidal zones. An attempt has been made to compare the distribution of MRS in this modern environment with those in the ~1.6Ga Chorhat Sandstone of the Vindhyan Supergroup for high-resolution palaeoenvironmental interpretation. The upper part of the intertidal segment of the Chorhat Sandstone is distinguished from its lower part by the presence of abundant cracked mat surfaces, petee ridges and gas domes in the former, while wrinkle structures, Kinneyia, rolled-up mat fragments, patchy ripples and multi-directional ripples are equally abundant in both parts. The lower part of the intertidal segment of the Chorhat Sandstone is thus analogous to the upper intertidal zone of the modern Gulf of Cambay environment, while the upper part of the Chorhat intertidal segment reflects prolonged exposure close to the high tide line. The bottom-most part of the intertidal segment of the Chorhat Sandstone with fewer MRS corresponds to the lower intertidal zone at Cambay. Inferred disc-shaped microbial fossils within Vindhyan sandstones are analogous to the DMC found in the modern environment and these features do not have any biostratigraphic implication.

Microbial mat records in siliciclastic rocks: Examples from Four Indian Proterozoic basins and their modern equivalents in Gulf of Cambay

Microbial mat-related structures (MRS) in siliciclastics have been investigated from four Proterozic formations in India, namely the Marwar Supergroup, the Vindhyan Supergroup, the Chhatisgarh Supergroup and the Khariar Group for their spectral variations, genetic aspects, palaeo–environmental significance and influence on sequence stratigraphic architecture. The maximum diversification of MRS has been experienced in shallow marine coastal Precambrian successions. Observations made from modern environment as well as Precambrian rock records clearly indicates that the features like petee ridges, sand-cracks, gas domes, multi-directed ripples, reticulate surfaces, sieve-like surfaces and setulf are most likely to form in the shallowest part of the marine basins, in upper intertidal to supratidal conditions while wrinkle structures, roll-up structures and patchy ripples had a broader range of palaeogeographic settings from the supratidal to subtidal conditions. Discoidal microbial colony (DMC) represents a special variety of the mat-layer feature in modern environment that may have diverse internal architecture, sometimes falsely resembles Ediacaran medusoids. The uniqueness in sequence stratigraphic architecture of the microbial mat-covered sediment is reflected by the presence of more amalgamated HSTs compare to that of TSTs. The preservation of forced and normal regressive deposits on low-gradient epeiric shelf under low continental freeboard indicates microbial mat-infested sea-floor impedes erosion and concomitant sediment supply may facilitate formation and preservation of regressive packages.

The role of microbial mats in the movement of stones on playa lake surfaces

This paper sheds light into the debated mechanisms that move rocks across low gradient surfaces during storm episodes. Microbial mats are recognised to play a crucial role in sediment destabilisation and the subsequent motion of rocks in a playa lake from central Spain. Widespread countless scars are present on the playa lake sediment surface, each terminating at a stone, and/or a mound of overfolded fragments of microbial mats. All available objects, including cobble-sized stones, on the surface were transported for several metres leaving behind furrow-like tracks.The starting point of the tracks was found underwater on a surface veneered by microbial mats poorly attached to the substrate. The flotation and transportation of the microbial upper layer by wind-generated water currents are suggested to be a critical element promoting the destabilisation and subsequent transportation of the attached sediment, including the rocks. The sudden exposure of bubble-separated sediment is also envisaged as a source of buoyancy required to lift out the rocks at the starting point of the tracks and to reduce the friction on the base of the rock. At the end of the tracks the rocks and the sediment mounds often overlap, which reveals that rocks were embedded and transported by sediment rafts across the playa lake surface.The combination of the specific sedimentary and weather conditions involved in the transportation of rocks occurs periodically in mudflats. The implications are that this is not a local phenomenon, but rather, is a geographically widespread sedimentary process that may have occurred repeatedly throughout geological time. The effects of storm episodes can be inferred in ancient mudflat deposits by the assemblage of variably-sized stones and microbial-mat related structures.

Evidence for 2.0 Ga continental microbial mats in a paleodesert setting

Early evolved microbial communities characterized the initial biological invasion of Precambrian continental landscapes. In modern arid settings, microbial mats and biological soil crusts are well-developed and stabilize sediment. The Paleoproterozoic Makgabeng Formation in South Africa is one of the oldest and best preserved, dryland systems on Earth. Six types of microbial mat-related structures are now recognized within these depositional systems. This paper presents three newly discovered structures that include tufted microbial mat, biological soil crusts, and gas-escape features, in addition to three previously documented structures that include roll up features, sand cracks, and wrinkled features. These discoveries demonstrate that microbial communities were well-established and inhabited diverse continental settings by 2.0Ga, approximately 200 million years after the onset of the Great Oxidation Event.

Microbial mat-related peculiar tunnels and cracks from modern supratidal environment, Gulf of Cambay, India

Shrinkage of the mat cover related to drying and desiccation during the ebb tide may form cracks, curls, domes, tunnels and a variety of features. Figure b represents a striking amoeboid structure formed by the interaction between multi-generation undermat gas bubble tunnels and cracks. Competitive growth, twisting, branching and rejoining of the gas migration form tunnels and cracks with laterally variable diameters. The pre-tunnel cracks (red arrows) evidently control gas migration; post-tunnel cracks ran across the tunnels (white arrows). The photograph provides an idea about wide variations in microbial mat-related structures expected in ancient siliciclastic rocks. Microbial mat related structures (MRS) from Mesoproterozoic Chhattisgarh and Khariar basins, Central India and their bearing on shallow marine sedimentation

A wide spectrum of macroscopic and microscopic features preserved on the bedding planes or frozen between the laminations of fine - to medium-grained sandstones are described from a number of stratigraphically and geographically separated localities within the Chhattisgarh (Bhalukona and Kansapathar Formations) and Khariar basins (Lower sandstone Formation), India and attributed to microbial mat related sedimentary structures. These include bedding plane features viz. wrinkle structures, palimpsest and patchy ripples, spindle-shaped and sub-circular microbial shrinkage cracks indicating original cohesiveness in sand-sized sediments, fragments of torn mat spread on bed surface suggesting mat erosion under high energy flow etc. and bed-perpendicular features e.g. wavy-crinkly laminae, iron oxide specks and stringers etc. The structures suggest different mat-induced bio-physical interactions viz. growth, biostabilisation, binding, baffling and trapping or a combination of all. Mat growth also favoured preservation of setulf structure that usually has low preservation potential. The stratigraphic intervals from where the structures are described are assigned Mesoproterozoic time frame (∼1.4 Ga) and modelled as products of near-shore environment i.e. wave-influenced shoreface - beach under widely different sea level stands viz. forced regression, low-stand and transgression. It is proposed that prolific mat growth may act as facilitator for preservation of thin forced regressive deposits in Proterozoic low-gradient epeiric basins.

Microbial mat-induced sedimentary structures in siliciclastic sediments: Examples from the 1.6 Ga Chorhat Sandstone, Vindhyan Supergroup, M.P., India

This paper addresses macroscopic signatures of microbial mat-related structures within the 1.6Ga-old Chorhat Sandstone of the Semri Group — the basal stratigraphic unit of the Vindhyan succession in Son valley. The Chorhat Sandstone broadly represents a prograding succession of three depositional facies ranging from shallow shelf to coastal margin with aeolian sandsheet. The mat-mediated structures were generated because of plastic or brittle deformation of sand, turned cohesive and even thixotropic because of microbial mat growth. Mat growth also favoured abundant preservation of structures that usually have low preservation potential. Prolific growth of microbial mat in the subtidal to intertidal zone of the Chorhat sea was facilitated due to lack of grazing and burrowing activities of organisms in the Precambrian. It further indicates low rate of sedimentation between the storms, as also attested by frequent superposition of storm-beds, even near the storm wave base. It also reduces erosion and that, in turn, would imply low sediment concentration in flows leading to development of bedforms that are likely to be smaller in size and isolated from each other in a single train in contrast to those that form in mat-free sands.
