Determination of Oxygen in Organic Compounds by Using a New Type of Spherical Nickel-Platinum-Carbon Catalyst

A new type of nickel-platinum-carbon catalyst was used in the microdetermination of oxygen in organic compounds with satisfactory results. The results of determination and the properties of the catalyst are also discussed.

Microdetermination of oxygen in organic compounds using a glassy carbon pyrolysis tube and nondispersive infrared detection

A glassy carbon pyrolysis tube holding a filling of carbon granules, protected from atmospheric oxygen by the carrier gas and an aluminum oxide ceramic mantle tube, has been successfully used for the first time in the microdetermination of oxygen. The reaction temperature of 1300 °C assures the quantitative transformation of oxygen to carbon monoxide, which is measured by infrared detection. The analysis of fluorine, phosphorus and alkali metal containing compounds is now possible. A 10% hydrogen content in the nitrogen carrier gas enhances liberation of oxygen in organometallic compounds. The method is applicable to sample weights between 0.1 and 5 mg and the time required for one analysis is 100 s.

Noncatalytic high temperature extraction-nonaqueous titrimetric microdetermination of oxygen in organic compounds

Oxygen in various organic compounds was directly converted to carbon monoxide by decomposing a sample in a graphite crucible at higher than 1800° C. The decomposition products containing the monoxide were purified with soda-asbestos and heated copper wire using argon as a carrier gas. Then the monoxide was oxidized with heated copper(II) oxide. Carbon dioxide produced was absorbed with dimethylformamide containing 2-aminoethanol, and was titrated with a standard solution of tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide in benzene plus some methanol using thymolphthalein as an indicator.

Microdetermination of oxygen at traces level in organic sulfur compounds

We have described an original method allowing us to determine traces of oxygen in organic compounds such as polymers modified through grafting of functions containing oxygen. The method allows us to obtain oxygen contents included between a few hundred ppm and 7 to 8%. It consists in the pyrolysis of the sample, the reduction of oxygen to carbon monoxide and, finally the detection of the latter in an infrared analyzer.

Kohlenmonoxid wird dann bei 610° uber Kupferoxid oxydiert und CO2 in einer Warmeleitfahigkeitszelle gemessen. Testsubstanzen dienen zu deren Eichung fur Sauerstoff.

Microdetermination of oxygen, carbon and water in inorganic materials using a carrier-gas technique

A description is given of the accurate determination of small quantities of oxygen, carbon and water in inorganic compounds. Oxygen and carbon are determined by a conductimetric technique and water by a coulometric technique. The limits of detection of the different methods are: 0.1μg of oxygen, 0.1 μg of carbon and 0.03 μg of water. This is accomplished by taking special care to obtain a low blank and by using stable instruments. A suggestion is made for the simultaneous determination of water and hydrogen.

Reduced copper has been used generally for removing the oxygen in the nitrogen gas in the microdetermination of oxygen, but instead of reduced copper the authors have used about 20 g of Raney-nickel in the dry state prepared through the development of Raney-alloy, and have found that the oxygen is removed completely from the nitrogen gas at room temperature; Raney-nickel has also a much greater capacity than the reduced copper.

The direct micro determination of oxygen in organic material

A procedure is described in which interferences caused by hydrogen and sulphur are eliminated. These occur when petroleum hydrocarbons or sulphur containing materials are analysed. Copper oxide, in conjunction with the gravimetric determination of carbon dioxide, has been found preferable to the iodine pentoxide procedure. The replacement of iodine pentoxide by copper oxide has also simplified the maintenance of the apparatus without any loss of applicability to organic compounds in general. Activated copper is used to absorb sulphur compounds. Details of the modified procedure are included.
