Erasmus’s Revision of the New Testament and Its Influence on Dutch Bible Translations: The Dossier Revisited

This article re-examines the influence of Erasmus’s Latin–Greek New Testament upon Dutch vernacular Bible translations. Whereas scholarship up until the present has focused on the translation of Erasmus’s New Testament published by Cornelis Hendricksz. Lettersnijder (Delft, 1524), this article stresses that the Dutch New Testament published earlier in 1524 by the Antwerp printer Adriaen van Berghen played a more crucial role in the development of an Erasmian translation than has been assumed until now. In the Dutch vernacular editions of the years 1525–1526, which the scholarly literature has often labelled as combined Erasmian-Lutheran editions, the influence of Erasmus’s text only decreased in favour of Luther’s translation. Erasmus’s influence was felt in particular in the Low Countries by way of the Catholicized or “Vulgatized” version published by Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten (Antwerp, 1527 and later editions).

Between 1500 and 1513 Pierre Gringore wrote three propagandistic pieces in support of the foreign policy of French King Louis XII One of these, the 33-stanza Entreprise de Venise, was printed for the first time in Paris sometime between mid-March and early April 1509. This polemical pamphlet was inspired by the formation of an alliance of European princes against the republic of Venice, which had resulted from the League of Cam-bray of 10 December 1508, whose agenda had included a coordinated military attack against the Venetians. A few years later the Antwerp printer Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten published an anonymous translation of Gringore's Entreprise in Dutch under the title Venegien (ca 1514). This article examines how the alterations made in the Dutch rendering of Gringore's polemical poem serve to create a pamphlet that no longer promotes the policies of the French King but rather supports the aspirations of Emperor Elect Maximilian of Austria.

AbstractThe cumulative printers index in W. Nijhoff and M.E. Kronenberg's Nerlerlranrl- .sche BiblioAr(zl)hie van 1500-1540 (NK), part III, vol III, contains the most recent, complete description of the Delft printer Cornelis Lettersnijder's publishers' list. It records four editions of the New Testament in 1518, 1524, 1525, and 1533. Copies exist only of the well-known edition of 1524 (NK 378). It is generally considered unlikely that a 1518 edition (NK 0140) ever existed. In contrast to previous scholarship, M.E. Kronenberg believes that no 1525 edition (NK 0149) existed either. Only a few 19th-century catalogues attest to the 1533 (NK 0160) edition. The present study starts with a short exploration of the printer and his list. It goes on to deal with his editions of the New Testament. The study confirms that the editions of 1518 anJ 1525 were indeed never published, so that of the four editions supposed, only two ever saw print. The recent discovery by the author in the "Jezuietenbibliotheek Berchmanianum" in Nijmegen of a copy of the 1533 edition enables him to offer a bibliographical description of the publication in addition to an analysis of the contents of this heretofore so poorly known edition. The edition was printed in octavo format and was published in a joint venture with the printer Henrick Peetersen van Middelburch. The study demonstrates how the Antwerp printer Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten copied and simplified Lettersnijder's text in the 1524 edition for his own editions of the New Testament in 1527, 1530, and 1531 (2x). It goes on to show that one of Van Hoochstraten's editions in turn stood at the basis of Lettersnijder's 1533 edition of the New Testament.

Jan van Doesborch's departure from Antwerp and his influence on the Utrecht printer Jan Berntsz

This article examines the reasons that the printer Jan van Doesborch may have had for moving to Utrecht after working almost 30 years in Antwerp. In Utrecht van Doesborch settled at the address of another printer, Jan Berntsz, and, as is demonstrated here, went on to have a considerable influence on his work. It seems probable that van Doesborch's move was occasioned largely by the reduced accessibility of the English market after 1526, as a result of which his competitive position suffered compared with that of other Antwerp printers. His joint venture with Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten and Henrijck Petersz in respect of the Cronijcke van Brabant (NK 654-6), whether or not it was entered into voluntarily, points to financial difficulties, while his edition of Dat bedroch der vrouwen (NK 4422) may have had an effect on his social position. The choice of Utrecht as van Doesborch's new home is explained by the fact that he already knew Berntsz, the only printer in Utrecht at the time, and was also aware that Berntsz's output was low. A very considerable part of Berntsz's list over the period 1530-42 turns out to consist of reprints of texts originally printed by van Doesborch. In particular, Berntsz reprinted texts containing knowledge that could be turned to practical use, for which there seems to have been a ready market in Utrecht and environs. At the same time he continued to print other works, mainly for the secular and ecclesiastical authorities of Utrecht. From the difference between Berntsz's list of 1530-42 and his output between 1514 and 1526 it is clear that the arrival of van Doesborch had a major yet superficial impact on him. He faithfully reprinted the texts that became available through van Doesborch, but made little effort to publish anything really new.
