Design of hydrophilic photocleavage o-nitrobenzyl acrylate-modified nanogels with outstanding biocompatibility prepared by RAFT polymerization for drug carrier

Three kinds of hydrophilic photocleavage o-nitrobenzyl acrylate-modified nanogels with different particle size and narrow particle size distribution (1.8–0.24) were designed and synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical (RAFT) polymerization based on methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA) and UV-light responsive crosslinker 5-(acryloyloxy)-2-nitrobenzyl acrylate (ONB) prepared with acryloyl chloride and 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl alcohol. The influences of particle size and distribution of the nanogel on its loading, encapsulation and photo-responsive release properties were investigated via the measurements of the final drug loading, the encapsulation efficiency and final cumulative release of coumarin 102 in the nanogel. The final drug loading, the encapsulation efficiency and the final cumulative release of coumarin 102 in the nanogel NG-ONB-300 with narrow particle size distribution were nearly twice more than those in the nanogel NG-ONB-300AIBN with wide particle size distribution (0.33) at the same concentration of coumarin 102 and reached 8.31%, 39.5% and 67%, respectively. With the increase of the particle size of the nanogel, the drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of the nanogel were decreased. Significantly, the in vitro cytotoxicity of the nanogel was also evaluated against HeLa cervical cancer cells by the MTT cell viability assay and its cell viability at different concentrations was greater than 91%, demonstrating that the photocleavage nanogel has an excellent biocompatibility and great potential in drug delivery fields.

Study on Synthesis and Properties of Low Sensitive Type Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

Low sensitive type polycarboxylate superplasticizer P-DM is composed of methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate, 3-methyl-3-butene-1-ol polyoxyethylene ether, acrylic acid, ester type small monomers A, sulfonic acid type small monomer B, amide type small monomer C, phosphoric acid type small monomer D and silane type small monomer E. The initiator system is hydrogen peroxide-sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate dihydrate redox initiation system. The chain transfer agent is mercaptoethanol. The test results show that the monomer conversion rate of the synthesized P-DM is high and the dosage sensitivity of P-DM is significantly better than that of the conventional ether type polycarboxylate superplasticizer and the conventional ester type polycarboxylate superplasticizer, and the water consumption sensitivity and temperature sensitivity of P-DM is slightly better than that of the conventional ether type polycarboxylate superplasticizer and the conventional ester type polycarboxylate superplasticizer.

Study the effect of a polymerizable surfactant on the physico‒mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR) and Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR).

Polymerizable surfactant (methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate) (MPM) was synthesized by direct esterification reaction between (methoxy polyethylene glycol) and methacrylic acid and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. MPM was incorporated natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and inspected as antioxidants for mixes vulcanizates to raise their resistant for ageing through storage to increase shelf life time. As well as possible to compare the effect of investigated (methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate) (MPM) with the commercial applied antioxidant in the production of rubber, as (2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline[TMQ]. The rheometric and physico mechanical properties of rubber mixes after and before thermal ageing were measured. The results obtained revealed that 1 and 1.5 methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPM) parts per 100 of rubber (phr) have superior effect in the protection of NR and SBR vulcanizates respectively.

The Radical Copolymerisation of Acrylic Acid and Methoxypolyethylene Glycol Methacrylate in an Aqueous Solution

Composition diagrams have been obtained for the homogeneous radical copolymerisation of acrylic acid and methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate (with a degree of oxyethylation of 23) in aqueous solutions. For all initial comonomer ratios, methacrylic ester unit enrichment of copolymers formed at low conversions (less than 10%) was established. Using Mayo–Lewis, Finemann–Ross, and Kelen–Tüdös methods, we determined the relative activities of acrylic acid (0.02–0.07) and methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate (1.14–1.20).

The study of novel gel polymer electrolytes plasticized with non-volatile tris(methoxypolyethyleneglycol) aluminate esters

A series of novel gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) based on a co-polymer matrix of methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEGM) and hexadecal-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (HPEGM) are synthesized in this study using non-volatile tris(methoxypolyethyleneglycol) aluminate ester ((MPEGn)3-Al) as the plasticizer. Their thermal stability and ionic conductivity are studied by differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis and alternating current impedance techniques. The results show that all the synthesized GPEs possess excellent thermal stability and exhibit relatively high ionic conductivity. Among all the synthesized GPEs, one with the composition of 40wt% MPEGM, 10wt% HPEGM and 50wt% (MPEG7)3-Al exhibits the highest ionic conductivity, up to 0.59×10−3Scm−1 at 30°C when the salt concentration is [Li]:[EO]=1:20. In addition, a coin cell based on this GPE, with LiFePO4 as cathode and metallic lithium as anode shows discharge capacities as high as 146mAhg−1 and 151mAhg−1 when cycled at 30°C and 50°C, respectively, under a current rate of 0.1C.

Enhanced performance of a novel gel polymer electrolyte by dual plasticizers

In this contribution, polyethylene glycol dilaurate (PEGDL) is synthesized and adopted as the physical cross-linking agent to enhance the performance, especially the mechanical property of the gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs). With polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) as the main plasticizer and PEGDL as the secondary plasticizer, several gel polymer electrolytes based on a copolymer of methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEGM) and hexadecal-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (HPEGM) are prepared by UV radiation curing. The relationship between the composition of the GPE and the physical properties, e.g., thermal property, mechanical property and ionic conductivity, is investigated. The lithium ion transference number, lithium/GPE interfacial property and charge–discharge performance of the lithium polymer cell based on the physically cross-linked GPE are studied. The gel polymer electrolyte prepared with the optimum composition exhibits excellent mechanical properties and a relatively high ionic conductivity (8.2 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C). A coin cell Li/GPE/LiFePO4, shows a discharge capacity 152 mAh g−1 and 163 mAh g−1 when cycled at 30 °C and 50 °C, respectively, under a current density of 0.1 C.

Polycarboxylate-Lignosulfonate Copolymerized High Performance Water Reducing Agent: Preparation and Application

A new polycarboxylate-lignosulfonate copolymerized high performance water reducing agent (PCL) was synthesized by polymerizing self-made methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA), methacrylic acid (MAA), lignosulfonate (LS) and sodium methyl acryl sulfonate (SMAS) in aqueous solution. Influence of LS dosage used in synthesis on the performance of the product was investigated. The performance of the new polymer and compounds prepared by polycarboxylate based superplasticizer (PC) and LS were compared, which revealed that the former has better properties of plasticizing and strength improving. Engineering applications indicated that concrete incorporating the new superplasticizer has advantages on its cohesiveness and pumpability. Moreover, it’s not easy to bleed, segregate and stick to the ground.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Physically Cross-Linked Gel Polymer Electrolyte

A physically cross-linked gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was obtained by photo-induced radical polymerization of a mixture of methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEGM),hexadecal-poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate (HPEGM),triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME),lithium salt (lithium perchlorate,LiClO 4),and photo-initiator (2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone,DMPA).The resulting polymers and gel polymer electrolytes were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR),differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),tensile test,and alternating current (AC) impedance measurements.The results showed that the physically cross-linked polymer matrix was formed by C 16 aggregation with the effect of electrostatic repulsion of PEO chains when the HPEGM content was high.The ionic conductivity of the obtained GPE is affected by its composition and the temperature.The GPE prepared with the optimum composition exhibited excellent mechanical properties and a relatively high ionic conductivity (up to 8.7 × 10-4 S·cm-1 at 30 °C).In addition,the GPE was found to present a wide electrochemical window (from 0 to 4.5 V (vs Li/Li +).In addition,a coin cell based on the gel electrolyte,with LiFePO 4/C as the cathode and metallic lithium as the anode,showed a discharge capacity as high as 154.7 and 148.0 mAh · g-1 at 30 °C under 0.1C and 0.2C rates,respectively.

Synthesis and Performance Research of Ester Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

Using methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA), butyl acrylate (BA), Methyl allyl sulfonate (SMAS) as the raw materials, we can compose them to multipolymer in redox system. Through analyzing the factors and adjustment of orthogonal experimental results, the optimum technology of synthesis are shown as follows: n(MPEGMA):n(BA):n(SMAS)=5:12:2, n(H2O2)/n(Vc)=6, and the reaction temperature is 30°C. When the volume of superplasticizer is 0.42%, water cement ratio is 0.3; the initial fluidity of cement paste can get to 238mm, and within 1 hour without any loss.

Surface modification of contact lenses using adsorption of ethylene oxide branched copolymers

AbstractTo examine methods for reducing the amount of adsorbed protein on the surface of contact lenses during use, cationic copolymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) units were synthesized and evaluated as surface modifiers. Poly(ethylene oxide) graft‐branched copolymers of composition 70 mol % dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DM) and 30 mol % methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (Mp0G; p = 2, 4, 9; the average number of the ethylene oxide units) were obtained using nonionic monomers containing poly(ethylene oxide) units. The copolymers very efficiently prevented protein adsorption on a contact lens. Contact angle measurements showed that immersion in tear fluid made the lens surface hydrophobic because of adsorption of proteins with hydrophobic residues. The copolymer pretreatment made the lens surface hydrophilic, even after dipping in artificial tear fluid. These results suggest that adsorption of the poly(ethylene oxide) branched copolymer on the contact lens would make the lens surface hydrophilic and prevent protein adsorption. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and characterization of comb polycarboxylic acid dispersants for coatings

AbstractComb polycarboxylic acid dispersants (CPCADs) graft acrylic copolymers which consist of hanging methoxy polyethylene glycol chains and carboxylic acid groups on main acrylic chain. The CPCADs have been synthesized by radical polymerization of methacrylic acid and methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate as a nonionic unsaturated hydrophilic macromonomer. The CPCADs are polymeric surfactants that can be used as anionic dispersant. Methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate has been synthesized by esterification of methacrylic acid and methoxy polyethylene glycol in the presence of methanesulfonic acid as catalyst. These have been characterized with 1H‐NMR and GPC. Acid values of CPCA dispersants have been determined. The dispersion of CPCA dispersants depends on their molecular weights, length mPEG, and acid values. Dispersion of titanium dioxide in typical solvent‐based paint formulation has been investigated. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of surface coatings having CPCADs such as gloss, hardness, and contrast ratio have been investigated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation and Properties of Modified Starch with Methoxy Polyethylene Glycol Methacrylate

The modified starch surfactant was synthesized by grafting copolymerization of methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPGM) with starch. The effects of monomers composition and side chain length on surface activity of starch surfactants were investigated. The modified starch surfactant was synthesized when the molar ratio of AGU (starch) and MPEGMA was 1: 0.3 at 85 °C for 2h. The FTIR result shows that starch had successfully reacted with MPGM. Modified starch surfactants are poor foam surfactant with excellent surface activity. The modified starch surfactants are biodegradable and environmentally friendly and may be extensively used in various fields in future.

Polymerization and Corrosion Inhibition Effects of Carboxylic Acid Copolymer Containing PEG Side Chain

We designed water soluble copolymer for corrosion inhibition effects in aqueous enviroment. This copolymer was pursued for the goal of environmental adaptability. Water soluble copolymers were prepared from methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEG-MA) and acrylic acid units. We polymerized 5 to 65wt% of methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate and 95 to 35wt% of acrylic acid monomers by azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and sodium peroxodisulfate in organic and water media, respectively. The solution containing these copolymers was evaluated inhibition of corrosion effect for steel materials. These results suggested that combination of MPEG-MA and acrylic acid in polymerizing in water media was most effective to inhibit corrosion for steel materials. It is important to contain 4 to 6 mol unit of ethylene oxide side chain in MPEG-MA.

Synthesis and behavior evaluation of a relative permeability modifier

Using N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA) as raw materials, hydrophobically associating copolymer was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization and structurally confirmed by FTIR. Choosing partially hydrolyzed polymer of the copolymer as a relative permeability modifier, its intrinsic viscosity reaches 212.66mL/g at 25°C. Its adsorbability on the oil sandstone is investigated, that is to say, the equilibrium concentration is approximately 5100mg/L while the saturated adsorption is about 0.652mg/g. Temperature and salt also have a certain effect of RPM system based on the partially hydrolyzed polymer. Finally, the residual resistance factors to water and oil were measured by core displacement test. The results show that the flow resistance of the system to water is 19.9 times as large as that to oil. That is, the system has obvious selectivity to water and oil.

Synthesis and Characterization of CREKA-Targeted Polymers for the Disruption of Fibrin Gel Matrix Propagation

Recently, efforts to control the propagation of the fibrin gel matrix (FGM) are under investigation as a means of limiting the formation of post-surgical adhesions (PSAs). A series of polymeric biomaterials based on block co-polymers of methacrylic acid (MA) and methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA) have been synthesized and characterized in order to study the impact of molecular architecture on the performance of these materials in suppressing FGM development. A robust synthetic strategy has been developed to facilitate the well controlled variation of numerous structural properties, including the relative size of each polymer block, the total polymer length, and the length of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chain length, and to incorporate the fibrin-targeting pentapeptide cysteine–arginine–glutamic acid–lysine–alanine (CREKA). Preliminary investigations, based on quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM), indicate the importance of molecular architecture in modulating the FGM propagation from model surfaces.

Alumina interaction with AMPS–MPEG copolymers produced by RAFT polymerization: Stability and rheological behavior

Different copolymers of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS), methoxypolyethyleneglycol methacrylate (MPEG), were prepared using two methods of radical polymerization: classical and RAFT-controlled radical polymerization. The effect of polymer structure and architecture on the adsorption behavior, electrokinetic and rheological properties of the alumina suspensions was investigated. Adsorption isotherms showed that copolymer interaction depended not only on the ratio of the monomers and their distribution within the macromolecular backbone, but also on the method of copolymerization. Electrokinetic analysis indicated that adsorption of the copolymer is accompanied by a shift in the isoelectric point (IEP) towards acid pH values. Above a certain concentration, of the order of 1 wt%, the absolute value of the ζ-potential reaches a saturation plateau. At this stage, the maximum ζ-potential value (in absolute value) depends on both the ratio of the monomers for statistical copolymer and the length of the two blocks in the case of block distribution. The rheological behavior is greatly affected in the presence of added polymer; the viscosity of the alumina suspension decreases and reaches an optimum, which depends on both the ratio of the monomers and their distribution within the macromolecular backbone. The viscoelastic properties of the suspensions were found to be functions of both the structure and the architecture of the copolymer. Adding AMPS–MPEG copolymer increases the stability of the suspension via electrostatic effects, but also via steric effects induced by the polyethylene glycol (PEG) segments. The steric contribution to the stabilization process is much important in the presence of block distribution, which is more efficient as dispersant for concentrated alumina suspensions.

Performance of a Slow-Release Type Carboxylic Polymer and its Application

A slow-release type carboxylic polymer(SLPC) is synthesized with the monomer mixture at a certain Molecule ratio of methacrylic acid, methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate and polyethylene glycol di-methacrylate. Test results of the fluidity, Zeta potential and adsorption in cement paste show that the polymer SLPC has the remarkable anti-adsorbing and high fluid-retaining ability for enhancing fluidity of cement paste as time elapsed, concrete experimental results indicated that it could be used to substitute 30～50% polycarboxylic type water-reducer in the same quality for preparing high workability concrete and controlling its slump loss.

Crystallization of Polymer Brushes with Poly(ethylene oxide) Side Chains

Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEGMA) macromonomers from immobilized initiators leads to thin films of comblike polymer brushes. The aqueous ATRP procedure results in essentially constant film growth rates and yields coatings with thicknesses as high as 400 nm. Polymers with side chains consisting of 22−23 ethylene oxide repeating units align to form crystalline materials analogous to their nonbrush analogues. However, polarized optical microscopy shows that the polymer films crystallize as two-dimensional spherulites. Both AFM images and reflectance FT-IR spectra of the films are consistent with crystalline lamellae preferentially oriented normal to the surface for brushes with thicknesses above 100 nm. As the film thickness decreases, the favored orientation shifts to crystalline lamellae parallel to the surface, with the PEO side chains oriented perpendicular to the surface. The lamellae orientations are related to polymer−surface interactions as well as to the “comblike” polymeric structure.
