Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems

To stimulate the development and application of formal methods in industry, we need to promote research and development for the improvement of formal methods and tools for industrial applications, and we need to exchange experiences of the industrial usage of these methods and tools. This special issue of Software Tools for Technology Transfer presents various tools and experience reports that are targeting the use of formal methods in industry. The papers in this special issue are extended versions of selected conference papers from the proceedings of the 27th International Conference on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems (FMICS 2022).

Formal methods and automated verification of critical systems

Critical (software) systems are all around us. These systems are typically characterised by stringent dependability requirements and demand elevated levels of robustness and fault tolerance. To assure that they function as intended and provide a number of quality guarantees, formal methods and automated verification techniques and tools have been in use in the engineering of such critical systems for many years now. In this introduction to the special issue FMICS---AVoCS on "Formal Methods and Automated Verification of Critical Systems", we outline a number of recent achievements concerning the use of formal methods and automated verification techniques and tools for the specification and analysis of critical systems from a variety of application domains. These achievements are represented by six selected papers: five were selected from the joint 21st International Workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems and 16th International Workshop on Automated Verification of Critical Systems (FMICS---AVoCS 2016), while one of them was selected after an open call for papers.

Formal methods for transport systems

Formal methods and verification tools have been in use in the engineering of safety-critical transport systems for well over 30 years. In both the railway and the avionics domain, for instance, formal methods are specifically recommended in current international certification standards for ultra-dependable systems and for products at the highest integrity level. In fact, traditionally, the applications of formal methods and tools to such transport systems concern demonstrating, with the highest levels of assurance, the correct functioning of the software systems involved, such as train signalling systems to avoid collisions. More recently, however, formal methods and verification tools have started to be applied also to the scheduling and management of transport systems or networks, for instance to optimise the exploitation of a railway line or to improve the operational efficiency of a bus network. In this introduction to the special issue on “Formal Methods for Transport Systems”, we outline some recent achievements for each of the above-mentioned types of application of formal methods and tools. These achievements are represented by three selected papers: one was selected from the “Formal Methods and Safety Certification: Challenges in the Railways Domain” track at the seventh International Symposium On Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Verification and Validation (ISoLA 2016); another one was selected from the 21st International Workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems and the 16th International Workshop on Automated Verification of Critical Systems (FMICS-AVoCS 2016); a final one was selected after an open call for contributions.

Preface of the special issue on formal methods in industrial critical systems

The use of formal methods in industrial critical systems has a lot of potential to increase the quality and reliability of these systems. Three of the main challenges of the application of formal methods in industrial systems are scalability, their often inherent complexity and the integration into existing development processes. Due to this, their application is limited mainly to where usage is highly recommended by domain-specific standards, e.g., in light rail and avionics. The contributions in this special issue address some of these core problems of using formal methods in industry. The articles are based on papers selected from the 2015 Fmics workshop, an annual forum organized by the Ercim working group dedicated to formal methods for industrial critical systems.

Introduction to the RE’11 special issue: requirements in motion

In 2002, the IEEE Symposium on Requirements Engineering (created in 1993) and the Conference on Requirements Engineering (created in 1994) were merged into a single conference series to form the IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference, which is commonly referred to as RE. Ever since then, RE is premier forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange on the latest developments in the field of Requirements Engineering. It has now become a tradition that the best research papers of each yearly edition of RE are identified by the programme committee, and their authors are invited to submit and extended version for a special issue of the Requirements Engineering Journal (REJ), the leading specialized archival publication in the field. As the Program Chair of the 19th IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE’11), it is my privilege and pleasure to introduce this special issue of the REJ which features extended versions of four distinguished papers from RE’11. RE’11 was held in the beautiful medieval town of Trento, Italy, from August 29 to September 2, 2011. The main conference attracted 230 delegates from all over the world. It was preceded by 2 days of tutorials and workshops as well as the RE doctoral symposium. This year, we had 12 workshops and two co-located 2-day events, namely FMICS’11 (the 16th International Workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems) and IStar’11 (the 5th International i* Workshop). The total number of attendants, including all co-located events, amounts to 300. Overall, these statistics are excellent and demonstrate the healthy status of the RE community. The special theme for this edition of the conference was ‘‘Requirements in Motion.’’ As systems grow ever more complex, are developed globally, and become more interconnected, the impacts of changes are harder to analyse and control. In these settings, ensuring that software will continue to exhibit its intended properties becomes trickier. Efficient management of change in the broad diversity of RE contexts and across the whole RE process continuously calls for novel research ideas. For this reason, RE’11 specifically encouraged submissions that address requirements change and evolution. This year, the research track received 138 submissions, from which we accepted 23 full-length papers, resulting in an acceptance rate of 16,7 %. The papers were selected using the multi-tiered blind review process developed over the years. Each paper was carefully reviewed by at least three program committee members. All papers with at least one positive review were then discussed by program committee and program board members using Cyberchair. Approximately one-third of the submissions eventually made it to the program board meeting in Namur, Belgium, where the final decisions were made. The 23 research papers were divided into eight paper sessions which showcased ground-breaking research on a rich variety of topics. Two of these sessions were devoted to the special theme. Out of these 23 already highly select papers, the program committee nominated one best paper and five distinguished papers. Their authors were invited to submit a revised and extended version for possible inclusion in the REJ. Four of these papers eventually made it to this special issue after going through a standard journal blind review process with subsequent revisions. Part of the referees were P. The workshops of the ERCIM working group on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems (FMICS) strive to promote research on and support the improvement of formal methods and tools for industrial applications. In particular, they are intended as a platform for scientists and industrial users of formal methods, to exchange their experiences with these methods.Previous workshops were held in Oxford (March 1996), Cesena (July 1997), Amsterdam (May 1998), Trento (July 1999), Berlin (April 2000), Paris (July 2001), and Málaga (July 2002).This year's workshop is co-located with the ERCIM meeting in Røros, a small town near Trondheim that with its rich history has been added to the Unesco cultural heritage.We are pleased to welcome two invited presentations: Reiner Hähnle from Chalmers University of Technology talks about a case study with the KeY tool in which formal and informal methods are integrated, and Werner Damm from the University of Oldenburg discusses the ESACS approach of model-based safety analysis. The 14 regular contributions, which were selected out of 25 submissions, cover a wide range of topics, and for a large part deal with the application of formal methods in industrial case studies. Some notable application areas are smart cards, Java, MPEG, and avionic systems.As a gesture of involvement, the European Association of Software Science and Technology (EASST)handed out two best paper awards. One to Paul Ziemann and Martin Gogolla from the University of Bremen for their paper Validating OCL Specifications with the USE Tool. The other to Stefan Blom and Simona Orzan from CWI for their paper Distributed State Space Minimization.On occasion of the co-location with the ERCIM meeting, we invited 10 representatives from ERCIM sites which actively participate in the FMICS working group to present an overview of current research on formal methods in their research groups. We are very happy that all these invitations were accepted.We thank the members of the programme committee and the additional referees for their careful evaluation of the submitted papers. The local organisers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim provided excellent assistance during the workshop preparation. Formal Aspects of Computing is devoted to the best papers presented at the third ERCIM workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical Systems (FMICS98), held at the CWI in Amsterdam. The FMICS workshops are intended to bring together scientists who are active in the area of formal methods and who are interested in exchanging their experiences in industrial usage of these methods. They also aim at the promotion of research and development for the improvement of the theory and their tools for industrial applications. We are satisfied to see that time and again, the application of these methods clarifies the structure and inner workings of many systems and exposes many mistakes and conceptual errors. We are particularly delighted, as the reader may see when browsing through this special issue, that throughout the years a steady improvement can be observed regarding the size and complexity of systems that are being investigated. We hope and expect that this trend will continue throughout the forthcoming FMICS workshops. We want to thank all those that have helped in producing this special issue. Especially the program committee, assisted by numerous referees, as well as the authors of the contributions and the participants of the workshop.
