Robust quantitative X-ray phase diagnostic for carbon composite characterisation in the context of lightning induced risk

Getting complementary physical information from a single image acquisition is particularly valuable for materials analysis. Grating based X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) methods allow decoupling attenuation, phase and scattering information. However, the phase and scattering extraction processes can easily suffer from artefacts, which is detrimental to implement this imaging technique in societal applications. In this paper, we demonstrate that grating based XPCI can provide a robust phase measurement in complex materials such as damaged composites. The technique allows the phase to be analysed using a self-assessment method that first identifies the artefacts from the imaging setup, and then can be used as an indicator to interpret the signal from a material. We focus on carbon fibre reinforced polymers which we subjected to laboratory-controlled lightning strikes. We evidence that the combined information from phase and attenuation allow identifying the type of defect induced by the lightning current. The phase information is converted into relative mass density variation within the sample and depicts areas with a loss in density up to 40%. We ensure that these results are valid by comparing them with an X-ray attenuation contrast tomographic reconstruction.

A hybrid simulation method towards the gamma ray phase contrast imaging for metallic material

A high efficiency simulation method for propagation-based phase-contrast imaging, called directional macro-wavefront (DMWF), is developed with the aim of simulating high-energy phase-contrast imaging. This method takes both Monte Carlo and wave optical propagation into consideration. Traditional wave-optics-based simulation methods for phase-contrast imaging encounter unacceptable computational complexity when high-energy radiation is used. In contrast, this method effectively addresses this issue by using macro-wavefront integration. Several simulation examples using typical parameters of inverse Compton scattering sources are presented to illustrate the excellent energy adaptability and efficiency of the DMWF method. This method provides a more efficient approach for phase-contrast imaging simulations, which will drive the advancement of high-energy phase-contrast imaging.

High-angular-sensitivity X-ray phase-contrast microtomography of soft tissue through a two-directional beam-tracking synchrotron set-up.

Two-directional beam-tracking (2DBT) is a method for phase-contrast imaging and tomography that uses an intensity modulator to structure the X-ray beam into an array of independent circular beamlets that are resolved by a high-resolution detector. It features isotropic spatial resolution, provides two-dimensional phase sensitivity, and enables the three-dimensional reconstructions of the refractive index decrement, δ, and the attenuation coefficient, μ. In this work, the angular sensitivity and the spatial resolution of 2DBT images in a synchrotron-based implementation is reported. In its best configuration, angular sensitivities of ∼20 nrad and spatial resolution of at least 6.25 µm in phase-contrast images were obtained. Exemplar application to the three-dimensional imaging of soft tissue samples, including a mouse liver and a decellularized porcine dermis, is also demonstrated.

Transport-of-intensity model for single-mask x-ray differential phase contrast imaging

X-ray phase contrast imaging holds great promise for improving the visibility of light-element materials such as soft tissues and tumors. The single-mask differential phase contrast imaging method stands out as a simple and effective approach to yield differential phase contrast. In this work, we introduce a model for a single-mask phase imaging system based on the transport-of-intensity equation. Our model provides an accessible understanding of signal and contrast formation in single-mask x-ray phase imaging, offering a clear perspective on the image formation process, for example, the origin of alternate bright and dark fringes in phase contrast intensity images. Aided by our model, we present an efficient retrieval method that yields differential phase contrast imagery in a single acquisition step. Our model gives insight into the contrast generation and its dependence on the system geometry and imaging parameters in both the initial intensity image as well as retrieved images. The model validity as well as the proposed retrieval method are demonstrated via both experimental results on a system developed in house as well as Monte Carlo simulations. In conclusion, our work not only provides a model for an intuitive visualization of image formation but also offers a method to optimize differential phase imaging setups, holding tremendous promise for advancing medical diagnostics and other applications.

Quantitative real-time phase microscopy for extended depth-of-field imaging based on the 3D single-shot differential phase contrast (ssDPC) imaging method.

Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) is a promising label-free imaging method capable of quantitatively measuring the three-dimensional (3D) refractive index distribution of transparent samples. In recent years, partially coherent ODT (PC-ODT) has attracted increasing attention due to its system simplicity and absence of laser speckle noise. Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) technologies represented by Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging and intensity diffraction tomography (IDT) need to collect several or hundreds of intensity images, which usually introduce motion artifacts when shooting fast-moving targets, leading to a decrease in image quality. Hence, a quantitative real-time phase microscopy (qRPM) for extended depth of field (DOF) imaging based on 3D single-shot differential phase contrast (ssDPC) imaging method is proposed in this research study. qRPM incorporates a microlens array (MLA) to simultaneously collect spatial information and angular information. In subsequent optical information processing, a deconvolution method is used to obtain intensity stacks under different illumination angles in a raw light field image. Importing the obtained intensity stack into the 3D DPC imaging model is able to finally obtain the 3D refractive index distribution. The captured four-dimensional light field information enables the reconstruction of 3D information in a single snapshot and extending the DOF of qRPM. The imaging capability of the proposed qRPM system is experimental verified on different samples, achieve single-exposure 3D label-free imaging with an extended DOF for 160 µm which is nearly 30 times higher than the traditional microscope system.

Investigation of an Improved Angular Spectrum Method Based on Holography

Digital holography (DH) is a novel, real-time, non-destructive, and quantitative phase-contrast imaging method that is particularly suitable for label-free live biological cell imaging and real-time dynamic monitoring. It is currently a research hotspot in the interdisciplinary field of optics and biomedical sciences, both domestically and internationally. This article proposes an improved angle spectrum algorithm based on holographic technology, which reconstructs a cellular hologram based on phase information. Optical images and chromosome cell images, reconstructed using holographic technology at different diffraction distances under the improved angle spectrum algorithm, were analyzed and compared. The optimal diffraction distance for reconstructing chromosome cell images was selected, and chromosome cell images reproduced using traditional angle spectrum algorithms, angle spectrum algorithms combined with GS, and improved angle spectrum algorithms were compared. Comparative experiments with the different models show that the proposed algorithm is superior to traditional angle spectrum algorithms in reconstructing cell images based on phase information. Furthermore, experiments have shown that images reconstructed using the improved algorithm can resolve high signal-to-noise ratio information. This algorithmic improvement provides new applications for cellular detection in clinical diagnostics and is more suitable for cell phase reconstruction in practical applications.

A novel fusion method for X-ray phase contrast imaging based on fast adaptive bidimensional empirical mode decomposition.

X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) can separate the attenuation, refraction, and scattering signals of the object. The application of image fusion enables the concentration of distinctive information into a single image. Some methods have been applied in XPCI field, but wavelet-based decomposition approaches often result in loss of original data. To explore the application value of a novel image fusion method for XPCI system and computed tomography (CT) system. The means of fast adaptive bidimensional empirical mode decomposition (FABEMD) is considered for image decomposition to avoid unnecessary information loss. A parameter δ is proposed to guide the fusion of bidimensional intrinsic mode functions which contain high-frequency information, using a pulse coupled neural network with morphological gradients (MGPCNN). The residual images are fused by the energy attribute fusion strategy. Image preprocessing and enhancement are performed on the result to ensure its quality. The effectiveness of other image fusion methods has been compared, such as discrete wavelet transforms and anisotropic diffusion fusion. The δ-guided FABEMD-MGPCNN method achieved either the first or second position in objective evaluation metrics with biological samples, as compared to other image fusion methods. Moreover, comparisons are made with other fusion methods used for XPCI. Finally, the proposed method applied in CT show expected results to retain the feature information. The proposed δ-guided FABEMD-MGPCNN method shows potential feasibility and superiority over traditional and recent image fusion methods for X-ray differential phase contrast imaging and computed tomography systems.

Tri-directional x-ray phase contrast multimodal imaging using one hexagonal mesh modulator.

Objective. X-ray phase contrast imaging is a promising technique for future clinical diagnostic as it can provide enhanced contrast in soft tissues compared to traditional x-ray attenuation-contrast imaging. However, the strict requirements on the x-ray coherence and the precise alignment of optical elements limit its applications towards clinical use. To solve this problem, mesh-based x-ray phase contrast imaging method with one hexagonal mesh is proposed for easy alignment and better image visualization.Approach. The mesh produces structured illuminations and the detector captures its distortions to reconstruct the absorption, differential phase contrast (DPC) and dark-field (DF) images of the sample. In this work, we fabricated a hexagonal mesh to simultaneously retrieve DPC and DF signals in three different directions with single shot. A phase retrieval algorithm to obtain artifacts-free phase from DPC images with three different directions is put forward and false color dark-field image is also reconstructed with tri-directional images. Mesh-shifting method based on this hexagonal mesh modulator is also proposed to reconstruct images with better image quality at the expense of increased dose.Main results. In numerical simulations, the proposed hexagonal mesh outperforms the traditional square mesh in image evaluation metrics performance and false color visualization with the same radiation dose. The experimental results demonstrate its feasiblity in real imaging systems and its advantages in quantitive imaging and better visualization. The proposed hexagonal mesh is easy to fabricate and can be successfully applied to x-ray source with it spot size up to 300μm.Significance. This work opens new possibilities for quantitative x-ray non-destructive imaging and may also be instructive for research fields such as x-ray structured illumination microscopy (SIM), x-ray spectral imaging and x-ray phase contrast and dark-field computed tomography (CT).

On the equivalence of the X-ray scattering retrieval with beam tracking and analyser-based imaging using a synchrotron source

X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) methods give access to contrast mechanisms that are based on the refractive properties of matter on top of the absorption coefficient in conventional x-ray imaging. Ultra small angle x-ray scattering (USAXS) is a phase contrast mechanism that arises due to multiple refraction events caused by physical features of a scale below the physical resolution of the used imaging system. USAXS contrast can therefore give insight into subresolution structural information, which is an ongoing research topic in the vast field of different XPCI techniques. In this study, we quantitatively compare the USAXS signal retrieved by the beam tracking XPCI technique with the gold standard of the analyzer based imaging XPCI technique using a synchrotron x-ray source. We find that, provided certain conditions are met, the two methods measure the same quantity.

Propagation-based phase-contrast imaging method for full-field X-ray microscopy using advanced Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors.

We demonstrate a propagation-based phase-contrast imaging method for full-field X-ray microscopy based on advanced Kirkpatrick-Baez (AKB) mirrors to achieve high-contrast observations of weak phase objects and correct field curvature aberrations. Through a demonstration performed at SPring-8, the phase contrast of weak phase objects such as polystyrene spheres and chemically fixed cells was successfully observed with high sensitivity (∼0.03 rad). Furthermore, the field of view of the AKB mirrors was expanded to the full area of the obtained images (25 × 30 µm) by correcting the field curvature aberration using reconstructed complex wavefields.

A simulation method of gamma-ray phase contrast imaging for metal samples

Phase contrast imaging (PCI) for materials of low Z-index has been rapidly developed in recent years. And PCI is also considered to have great potential to improve the resolution of radiographic imaging of high-Z materials by using high-energy gamma-ray, but the research is still in its infancy. In this paper, we develop a simulation method of gamma-ray PCI, which is based on the combination of the Monte Carlo simulation and wave optics. The feasibility of this method is verified by comparing the simulation result of Young’s double-slit experiment with its analytic result. To demonstrate the potential of gamma-ray PCI, a simulation of a concentric metal sample is carried out. The edge enhancement effect of PCI is clearly observed at the interfaces of the sample. The simulation results preliminarily verify the feasibility of gamma-ray PCI for metallic materials.

Superimposed wavefront imaging of diffraction-enhanced x-rays: A method to achieve higher resolution in crystal analyzer-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging

In conventional phase-contrast imaging methods, an optimum distance that is essential for x-ray interference and wavefront separation must be maintained between the object and the x-ray detector. This distance determines the apparent focal size of the x-ray source and affects spatial resolution of the system. To improve the spatial resolution, we proposed a phase-contrast imaging method that eliminates the distance required for x-ray interference and wavefront separation by placing a scintillator in close contact with a Laue angle analyzer (LAA). We mathematically described the image formed by superposition of diffracted beams in two directions of LAA and introduced a method to reconstruct tomographic sections from multiple projections captured by this setup. We experimentally demonstrated the validity and the usefulness of the proposed method. Using a physical phantom, we showed that the proposed method provides higher spatial resolution than conventional x-ray dark-field imaging. The proposed method may be useful for studying and elucidating the fine 3D microanatomy and histopathology of various biological specimens.

Single Shot X-ray Speckle Tracking Phase Contrast Imaging with a Low Brilliance Lab Source

In this paper, we present a single-shot X-ray speckle tracking (XST) phase-contrast imaging (PCI) method for a non-coherent polychromatic laboratory source. XST typically requires a coherent X-ray source, such as a synchrotron, to produce speckle. For a laboratory source without sufficient coherence, the absorption pattern of a random mask, such as sandpaper, have been proposed. However, to track the very small phase shifts in the absorption speckle below the size of the pixels of a standard flat panel detector in the range of 100μm, hundreds of detector images are taken, each moved by a linear stage by a fraction of a pixel to determine the phase shift. As a result, both acquisition time and radiation dose are high. Moreover, precise linear stages are required for sub-pixel movement of the random mask during acquisition of the projection images. In contrast, in this paper we propose a neural network called PCINet to acquire the differential phase image with only one reference image without the sample and one sample image. The proposed system does not require precise linear stages because only a single acquisition is needed. Due to the incoherent source, an absorption-based pseudo-speckle is generated as a reference image. In order to increase the contrast of the pseudo-speckle, a novel, cheap and easy to manufacture tungsten random spatial distrubution of particles is proposed as an alternative to sandpaper. A method for generating realistic training data for the neural network using real X-ray images in a laboratory setup was developed. The training data of the neural network was generated as close as possible to the real data by constructing the input image pairs pixel by pixel from multiple real X-ray images of the pseudo-speckle. The experimental resukts show that it is possible to obtain the differential phase image with only one reference image and one sample image with superimposed absorption speckles in the case of an incoherent laboratory setup.

Adapting an XCT-scanner to enable edge illumination X-ray phase contrast imaging

Conventional X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a non-destructive imaging technique to visualize and inspect the internal structure of materials in 3D, where materials are distinguished solely on the basis of their attenuation coefficient. However, with more specialized X-ray phase contrast imaging methods, sensitivity to complementary contrasts can be achieved, namely phase contrast and dark field contrast. Edge illumination X-ray phase contrast imaging (EI-XPCI) is a technique that is especially suited for laboratory application, because it has no strict coherence requirements for the source. While there is a wide variety of XCTscanners available on the market, a commercial EI-XPCI scanner does not yet exist. In this work, we present the procedure of outfitting an existing XCT-scanner with components to enable EI-XPCI scans and discuss the alignment procedure of these added components. Finally, phase contrast images are shown demonstrating the successful upgrade of a conventional XCT system with edge illumination based phase contrast possibilities.

Self-aligned multi-layer X-ray absorption grating using large-area fabrication methods for X-ray phase-contrast imaging

X-ray phase-contrast (XPCi) imaging methods are an emerging medical imaging approach that provide significantly better soft tissue contrast and could function as a viable extension to conventional X-ray, CT, and even some MRI. Absorption gratings play a central role in grating-based XPCi systems, especially because they enable the acquisition of three images in a single exposure: transmission, refraction, and dark-field. An impediment to commercial development and adoption of XPCi imaging systems is the lack of large area, high aspect ratio absorption gratings. Grating technology development, primarily due to technological limitations, has lagged system development and today prevents the scaling up of XPCi system into a footprint and price point acceptable to the medical market. In this work, we report on a self-aligned multi-layer grating fabrication process that can enable large-area X-ray absorption gratings with micron-scale feature sizes. We leverage large-area fabrication techniques commonly employed by the thin-film transistor (TFT) display industry. Conventional ITO-on-glass substrates are used with a patterned film of Cr/Au/Cr that serves as a self-aligned lithography mask for backside exposure. Commonly available SU-8 photoresist is patterned using the backside exposure mask followed by an electroplating step to fill the gaps in the SU-8 with X-ray attenuating material. Consequently, the electroplated patterned material acts as a self-aligned photomask for subsequent SU-8 layer patterning and so forth. The repeatability of the reported process makes it suitable for achieving higher aspect ratio structures and is advantageous over previously reported X-ray LIGA approaches. A prototype three-layer grating, with a thickness of around 40,upmu text{m}, having a visibility of 0.28 at 60,text{kV}_p with a 70,text{mm}times 70,text{mm} active area was fabricated on a 4-inch glass substrate and demonstrated by modifying a commercially available 3D propagation-based XPCi Microscope. The scalable and cost-effective approach to build larger area X-ray gratings reported in this work can help expedite the commercial development and adoption of previously reported Talbot-Lau, speckle-tracking, as well as coded-aperture XPCi systems for large-area clinical and industrial applications.

Visualization of temporomandibular joint articular cartilage using synchrotron-radiation X-ray phase-contrast imaging

X-ray phase-contrast imaging using synchrotron radiation was applied to visualize non-invasively the fine structures of articular cartilage of temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Among various X-ray phase-contrast imaging methods, we chose diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI) and carried out experiments using synchrotron radiation, aiming to visualize TMJ articular cartilage of rats and to identify the optimum X-ray energy. For comparison, the same sample was observed by a conventional laboratory X-ray source and X-ray micro-CT apparatus. DEI was able to visualize the articular cartilage of the mandibular condyle, which was not possible with the conventional laboratory X-ray source and X-ray micro-CT apparatus. DEI could also visualize the fibrous and proliferative layers in the articular cartilage of the mandibular condyle. We found that the optimum imaging energy was 20 keV for our sample. It was shown that DEI is a promising method for non-invasive visualization of TMJ articular cartilage. Our findings will open up new possibilities for applications of DEI with synchrotron radiation for basic medical and preclinical research.

Differential phase contrast for quantitative imaging and spectro-microscopy at a nanoprobe beamline.

The interaction of a focused X-ray beam with a sample in a scanning probe experiment can provide a variety of information about the interaction volume. In many scanning probe experiments X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is supplemented with measurements of the transmitted or scattered intensity using a pixelated detector. The automated extraction of different signals from an area pixelated detector is described, in particular the methodology for extracting differential phase contrast (DPC) is demonstrated and different processing methods are compared across a range of samples. The phase shift of the transmitted X-ray beam by the sample, extracted from DPC, is also compared with ptychography measurements to provide a qualitative and quantitative comparison. While ptychography produces a superior image, DPC can offer a simple, flexible method for phase contrast imaging which can provide fast results and feedback during an experiment; furthermore, for many science problems, such as registration of XRF in a lighter matrix, DPC can provide sufficient information to meet the experimental aims. As the DPC technique is a quantitative measurement, it can be expanded to spectroscopic studies and a demonstration of DPC for spectro-microscopy measurements is presented. Where ptychography can separate the absorption and phase shifts by the sample, quantitative interpretation of a DPC image or spectro-microscopy signal can only be performed directly when absorption is negligible or where the absorption contribution is known and the contributions can be fitted.

A Pockels cell enabled heterodyne phase contrast imaging diagnostic for detection of ion cyclotron emission.

This work describes a novel optical heterodyne detection scheme that significantly extends the frequency response of the phase contrast imaging method to detect electron density fluctuations in tens of megahertz frequency range. The system employs a variable frequency electro-optic modulator to allow operation at any frequency in the range 10-40MHz without the need to realign the system. The frequency coverage of the system makes it suitable to measure the radial structure of the electron density component of ion cyclotron emission on devices having confining magnetic field of a few tesla, thus extending the purely temporal measurements provided so far by magnetic probes.
