Characterization of hybrid organo-silica monoliths for possible application in the gradient elution of peptides.

We characterized thermally polymerized organo-silica hybrid monolithic capillaries to test their applicability in the gradient elution of peptides. We have used a single-pot approach utilizing 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA), and n-octadecyl methacrylate (ODM) as functional monomers. The organo-silica monolith containing MPTMS and EDMA was compared with the stationary phase prepared by adding ODM to the original polymerization mixture. Column prepared using a three-monomer system provided a lower accessible volume of flow-through pores, a higher proportion of mesopores, and higher efficiency. We utilized isocratic and gradient elution data to predict peak widths in gradient elution. Both protocols provided comparable results and can be used for peptide peak width prediction. However, applying gradient elution data for peak width prediction seems simpler. Finally, we tested the effect of gradient time on achievable peak capacity in the gradient elution of peptides with a column prepared with a three-monomer system providing a higher peak capacity. However, the performance of hybrid organo-silica monolithic stationary phases in gradient elution of peptides must be improved compared to other monolithic stationary phases. The limiting factor is column efficiency in highly aqueous mobile phases, which needs to be focused on.

Dual-mode chromatic electrophoretic display: A prospective technology based on fluorescent electrophoretic particles

In this study, we demonstrate a novel dual-mode chromatic electrophoretic display (EPD) based on fluorescent electrophoretic particles. By ball milling to reduce the size of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+,Mn2+ (BAM) phosphor and modifying the surface of BAM with 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and polylauryl methacrylate (PLMA), the BAM-MPS-PLMA fluorescent electrophoretic particles which appear white under natural light and show bright blue emission upon UV excitation were synthetized. The BAM-MPS-PLMA particles exhibit much better suspension stability and sufficient zeta potential in non-polar Isopar G solvent. The dual-mode chromatic EPD prototype has been fabricated with electrodes and microcapsules containing both BAM-MPS-PLMA particles and black particles, which can display black-and-white images in the unexcited mode and show blue emission in the excited mode, respectively. The device with excellent display performance, including bistability (decay less than 8% in an hour), reversibility (greater than500 cycles) and fast response time (176.6 ms), has been successfully applied as an electronic shelf label to demonstrate one of its practical applications.

Reinforcing Poly(methyl methacrylate) with Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibers Chemically Modified with Methacryolyl Groups.

Nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC), a type of cellulose nanofiber biosynthesized by Gluconacetobacter sp., has extremely long (i.e., high-aspect-ratio) fibers that are expected to be useful as nanofillers for fiber-reinforced composite resins. In this study, we investigated a composite of NFBC and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a highly transparent resin, with the aim of improving the mechanical properties of the latter. The abundant hydroxyl groups on the NFBC surface were silylated using 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), a silane coupling agent bearing a methacryloyl group as the organic functional group. The surface-modified NFBC was homogeneously dispersed in chloroform, mixed with neat PMMA, and converted into PMMA composites using a simple solvent-casting method. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite increased by factors of 1.6 and 1.8, respectively, when only 0.10 wt% of the surface-modified NFBC was added, without sacrificing the maximum elongation rate. In addition, the composite maintained the high transparency of PMMA, highlighting that the addition of MPTMS-modified NFBC easily reinforce PMMA. Furthermore, interactions involving the organic functional groups of MPTMS were found to be very important for reinforcing PMMA.

Ultraviolet-cured polyethylene oxide-based composite electrolyte enabling stable cycling of lithium battery at low temperature

The room and low-temperature performances of solid-state lithium batteries are crucial to expand their practical application. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) has received great attention as the most representative polymer electrolyte matrix. However, most PEO-based solid-state batteries need to operate at high temperature due to low room temperature ionic conductivity. Improving the ionic conductivity by adding plasticizers or reducing the crystallinity of PEO often compromises its mechanical strength. Here, an amorphous PEO-based composite solid-state electrolyte is obtained by ultraviolet (UV) polymerizing PEO and methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (KH570)-modified SiO2 which demonstrates both satisfactory mechanical performance and high ionic conductivity at room (3.37 × 10−4 S cm−1) and low temperatures (1.73 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 0 °C). In this electrolyte, the crystallinity of PEO is reduced through cross-linking, and therefore provides a fast Li+ ions transfer area. Moreover, the KH570-modified SiO2 inorganic particles promote the dissociation of lithium salts by Lewis acid centers to increase the ionic conductivity. Importantly, this kind of cross-linking networks endows the final electrolyte much higher mechanical strength than the pure PEO polymer electrolyte or PEO-inorganic filler blended systems. The solid-state LiFePO4/Li cell assembled with this electrolyte exhibits excellent cycling performance and high capacity at room and low temperatures.

Silica coating of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles by reverse microemulsion method and their functionalization with cationic polymer P(NIPAm-co-AMPTMA) for antibacterial vancomycin immobilization

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have previously been demonstrated as a platform for antibiotic drug carriers in biomedicine. In this work, a new approach has been envisioned to improve the colloidal stability of IONPs in aqueous media as well as drug-nanoparticle interactions through the surface modification with poly[N-isopropylacrylamide-co-(3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride], P(NIPAm-co-AMPTMA) via a multi-step process. Briefly, surface modification of oleic acid coated nanoparticles (Fe3O4-OA), (prepared by co-precipitation), was carried out with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) using an inverse microemulsion method and subsequently with reactive vinyl group (−CH = CH2) containing [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl] trimethoxysilane (MPS) by a seed growth process. The MPS containing silica coated iron oxide particles (Fe3O4/SiO2), were used as seed for copolymerization of NIPAm and AMPTMA to obtain the thermally sensitive magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), Fe3O4/SiO2/P(NIPAm-co-AMPTMA). Analysis of the prepared Fe3O4/SiO2/P(NIPAM-co-AMPTMA) nanocomposites showed well defined magnetic core and a modified silica shell with organic polymer. Changes in temperature resulted in alteration of the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential. To evaluate practical use of the MNCs, an antibacterial vancomycin was immobilized, and bacterial growth inhibition demonstrated the potential of these nanocomposites for application in biomedicine.

Optical and encapsulation properties of La(OH)3/poly(urethane acrylate) composites

Two lanthanum hydroxide (LH, La(OH)3) materials, i.e., La(OH)3 submicroplates (LHSMPs) and La(OH)3 nanoparticles (LHNPs), were synthesized hydrothermally, and their optical and encapsulation properties were investigated. The surfaces of the LHSMPs and the LHNPs were modified with a coupling agent: [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl] trimethoxysilane (MPS). To prepare transparent encapsulation composite materials, both types of surface-modified particles were dispersed in a poly(urethane acrylate) (PUA) adhesive polymer binder. The composite film with surface-modified LHNP-PUA exhibited better optical properties (higher transmittance and lower haze) than that with surface-modified LHSMP-PUA owing to smaller particle size. However, the latter was observed to be more advantageous for preventing the permeation of water molecules owing to the larger particle size.

Preparation, stabilization and characterization of 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyl trimethoxy silane modified colloidal nanosilica particles

In this study, homogeneous distribution of colloidal silica nanoparticles (CSPs) was performed by modifying and stabilizing CSPs in an organic solvent at neutral pH. The surface modified CSPs were synthesized by Stöber method in methanol, followed by modifying with different contents of 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS). Solvent exchange and dialysis process were applied to purify the modified CSPs for being stable in dioxane solvent at pH 7 ± 0.1. Both original and modified CSPs exhibited narrow particle size distribution in the range of 10–100 nm, while dynamic diameters (Z-averaged) of the CSPs were not significantly changed after modification and purification process (about 29 nm and 30 nm, respectively). Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) diagrams, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1HNMR) spectra analyses showed the successful grafting of hydrolyzed MPTS on the surface of CSPs, which increased with increasing MPTS loading (0.3, 0.45, 0.6, 1.0, 1.5 g/g of SiO2). At low MPTS loadings (0.3, 0.45 g/g of SiO2), the graft amount of MPTS on the surface was not saturated, therefore hydrogen bonds between CO groups of MPTS layer and surface hydroxyl group of CSPs have been occurred, however, these ineractions were disappeared at higher MPTS loadings. Scaning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images verified the nanoscale distribution of CSPs with 20–30 nm particle size. Based on the above results, monolayer grafting of hydrolyzed MPTS was successfully incorporated on the surface of CSPs leading to be stable in dioxane solvent. Dialysis method using dioxane solvent can be applied for purification of modified CSPs solution, which also preserved the nanoscale distribution of modified CSPs.

Characteristics of transparent encapsulation materials for OLEDs prepared from mesoporous silica nanoparticle-polyurethane acrylate resin composites

Transparent encapsulation materials were fabricated by combining inorganic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) and a transparent polyurethane acrylate (PUA)-based resin. The surfaces of the synthesized MSNPs were successfully modified by a two-step sol-gel method with the coupling agent [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane (MPS). The bare and MPS-modified MSNPs possessed good hygroscopic properties (20% and 17%, respectively). The optimized MSNP-PUA composite containing 2 wt% MPS-modified MSNPs exhibited a high transparency (94.8%) with low haze (2.1%) and excellent encapsulation properties (lasted 576 h in a moisture permeability test at 85 °C and 85% RH).

Effect of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Metal Oxide Nanoparticles on the Performance of Xanthan Gum Solutions for Heavy Oil Recovery.

Recent studies revealed higher polymer flooding performance upon adding metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) to acrylamide-based polymers during heavy oil recovery. The current study considers the effect of TiO2, Al2O3, in-situ prepared Fe(OH)3 and surface-modified SiO2 NPs on the performance of xanthan gum (XG) solutions to enhance heavy oil recovery. Surface modification of the SiO2 NPs was achieved by chemical grafting with 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane (MPS) and octyltriethoxysilane (OTES). The nanopolymer sols were characterized by their rheological properties and ζ-potential measurements. The efficiency of the nanopolymer sols in displacing oil was assessed using a linear sand-pack at 25 °C and two salinities (0.3 wt % and 1.0 wt % NaCl). The ζ-potential measurements showed that the NP dispersions in deionized (DI) water are unstable, but their colloidal stability improved in presence of XG. The addition of unmodified and modified SiO2 NPs increased the viscosity of the XG solution at all salinities. However, the high XG adsorption onto the surface of Fe(OH)3, Al2O3, and TiO2 NPs reduced the viscosity of the XG solution. Also, the NPs increased the cumulative oil recovery between 3% and 9%, and between 1% and 5% at 0 wt % and 0.3 wt % NaCl, respectively. At 1.0 wt % NaCl, the NPs reduced oil recovery by XG solution between 5% and 12%, except for Fe(OH)3 and TiO2 NPs. These NPs increased the oil recovery between 2% and 3% by virtue of reduced polymer adsorption caused by the alkalinity of the Fe(OH)3 and TiO2 nanopolymer sols.

Effects of sol–gel process parameters on the anticorrosive performance of phosphosilicate hybrid coatings for carbon steel: structural and electrochemical studies

The effects of several sol–gel process parameters such as acid catalyst addition and the heat treatment procedure on porosity and anticorrosive properties were investigated for phosphosilicate sol–gel hybrid coatings prepared from 3-[(methacryloyloxy)propyl] trimethoxysilane (MEMO) and bis-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate (BMEP).

Tailoring the size and microporosity of Stöber silica particles

The influence exerted by addition of [3-(methacryloyloxy) propyl]trimethoxysilane (MPTMOS) on the porosity and size of silica particles synthesized in a water-ethanol-ammonia-tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) mixture by the Stöber-Fink-Bohn method with the subsequent calcination in oxygen at 400 °C was studied. A set of particles was synthesized at the same relative amounts of the starting reagents and at the same temperature of the reaction mixture. It was shown that as the amount of MPTMOS in the TEOS + MPTMOS precursor is raised from 0 to 12.5 mol%, the final size of the resulting SiO2 particles decreases from ∼400 to ∼10 nm, which is presumably due to the increase in the number of nucleation centers by several orders of magnitude. It was found that the particles have micropores, which are presumably formed upon removal of methacryloyloxypropyl groups by calcination. As the MPTMOS:TEOS molar ratio is raised, the micropore volume and the apparent specific surface area of the particles first grow and reach values of 0.15 сm3 g−1 (350 m2 g−1), and then decrease to 0.05 сm3 g−1 (100 m2 g−1) because the particle size (∼10 nm) becomes comparable with the pore size (1–2 nm). Upon addition of one more porogen, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), to the reaction mixture, the micropore volume and the apparent specific surface area of the particles substantially increase to become 0.25 cm3 g−1 and 600 m2 g−1, correspondingly, and the particle size rises to 50 nm. Probably, mesopores formed upon oxidation of CTAB micelles and micropores are mutually connected and form a common network within the particles. The total pore volume and the specific surface area of the particles determined by BET reach values of 1.05 cm3 g−1 and 1200 m2 g−1, respectively.

Facile fabrication and characterization of polyimide nanofiber reinforced photocured hybrid electrolyte for Li‐ion batteries

In this study, a novel ion conductive polyimide (PI) nanofiber reinforced photocured hybrid electrolyte has been fabricated. Polyimide fibers were fabricated with the reaction between 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) followed by electrospinning and thermal imidization methods. Then, PI electrospun fibers were dipped into hybrid resin formulation containing bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate (BEMA), poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and 3‐(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO) and then photocured to prepare PI nanofiber reinforced electrolyte membrane. Photocured membranes were soaked into lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) before measuring electrochemical stability and ionic conductivity of hybrid polyelectrolyte. The chemical structure and electrochemical performance of the electrolytes were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The incorporation of MEMO into organic matrix effectively increased the modulus from 2.83 to 5.91 MPa. The obtained results showed that a suitable electrolyte for Li‐ion batteries with high lithium uptake ratio, high conductivity (7.2 × 10−3 S cm−1) at ambient temperature and wide stability window above 5.5 V had been prepared. High-surface area spherical micro-mesoporous silica particles

Submicrometer spherical micro-mesoporous SiO2 particles have been synthesized with a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area of up to 1600 m2 g−1, comparable with that of nanoporous carbon materials. The particles are constituted by densely packed SiO2 channels, similarly to materials of the MCM-41 type. The particles have two pore subsystems: monodisperse cylindrical mesopores with controllably varied average diameter (2.5–3.5 nm) and micropores supposedly situated within the walls of the SiO2 channels and between their outer surfaces. The particles with combined micro-mesoporous structure are obtained by hydrolysis of a mixture of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane (MPTMOS) with molar ratio 5:1 in an alcoholic–aqueous–ammonia medium containing surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide + 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene). Negatively charged products of hydrolysis of silica precursors (TEOS and MPTMOS) are condensed near the positively charged amino groups situated on the surface of the cylindrical micelles of surfactant forming SiO2 layer containing hydrophilic methacryloyloxypropyl (MP) groups in the interior. Due to the Van der Waals forces, these micelles coated with a SiO2 layer are organized into surfactant–silica clusters forming identical spherical aggregates. Removing of surfactant micelles and MP groups leads to formation of mesopores and micropores consequently.

Sonication-Aided Formation of Hollow Hybrid Nanoparticles as High-Efficiency Absorbents for Dissolved Toluene in Water.

A surfactant-free emulsion polymerization process was developed to produce hollow hybrid nanoparticles (HHNP thereafter). Ultrasonication was found not only to help the generation of nanosized monomer droplets but also to generate surface active species through mediating the hydrolysis of the monomer, 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS), thus stabilizing the oil/water interface. The hollow structure was formed based on a soft template approach, where the partially hydrolyzed monomer served as emulsifier and polymerized at the interface to form a hybrid shell. These HHNPs were used to absorb dissolved toluene in water and it was found they could reduce the toluene level down to zero, a level hardly being achieved by other methods. Combined with their good colloidal stability in water, these HHNPs are very promising colloidal collectors for dissolved organic solvents, in order to generate high quality water from contaminated water.

Synthesis of hybrid hollow sub-microspheres assisted by pre-added colloidal SiO2.

A novel method was developed to synthesize organic-inorganic hybrid hollow sub-microspheres (HHSs) through the addition of colloidal SiO2. The hydrolysis rate of 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was accelerated by SiO2 particles; meanwhile, the condensation rate of the hydrolytic species was decelerated. Thus, the hydrolytic monomers and oligomers of MPS were preserved as emulsifiers. These emulsifiers can then emulsify the isopentyl acetate (PEA) to form a steady O/W emulsion. The HHSs were produced by subsequent free radical polymerization and removal of the oil core. The hydrolytic MPS acted as emulsifiers and polymerizable monomers at the emulsification and polymerization stage, respectively. Thus, extra emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers, and organic monomers were omitted, which simplified the synthesis process. The good dispersion of HHSs in water and oil, as well as the EDX results, indicated the organic-inorganic hybrid structure of HHSs.

Effects of framework structure and coupling modification on the properties of mesoporous silica/poly(methyl methacrylate) composites

Mesoporous silicas (MPSs) with two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal framework (SBA-15) and worm-hole framework (MSU-J) were synthesized with poly(ethylene oxide- b-propylene oxide- b-ethylene oxide) (P123) and α,ω-polyoxypropylene diamine (D2000) as templates, respectively. Both SBA-15 and MSU-J were further modified with γ-(methacryloyloxy) propyl trimethoxy silane (MAPTS) via post-grafting to prepare organic mesoporous silicas (denoted SBA-15-G and MSU-J-G, respectively) with –C = C groups on the surface of mesopores. All mesoporous silicas were employed as filler to prepare improved poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites with lower dielectric constant, higher thermal, and mechanical properties. It was found that all mesoporous silicas retained their mesostructure in MPS/PMMA composites to introduce a lot of voids into the composites. So, the dielectric constant of composites decreased with the loading of mesoporous silica and their organic derivatives increased. Also, all composites exhibited stabilized dielectric constant with lower value in comparison to pure PMMA over the whole frequency from 1 to 160 MHz. Specifically, with the addition of MPS to PMMA, the dielectric constants of the composite can be reduced from 2.91 of the pure PMMA to 2.73 and 2.64 by incorporating 4 wt% SBA-15 and 7 wt% MSU-J, respectively. All the composites exhibited improved mechanical properties, glass transmission temperature ( Tg), and thermal stability in comparison to PMMA. All these differences in macro-properties are attributed to the different structure between MPS/PMMA composites and PMMA. MSU-J silica with the larger framework pore size provides the composite with the best improvement in dielectric, thermal, and mechanical properties.

In situ emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate in the presence of SiO2 with various surface coupling densities

Poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (poly(MMA-co-BA))/SiO2 nanocomposite particles with various morphologies were prepared through in situ emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate using surface 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyl trimethoxysilane (MPS)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles as nanofillers. The surface MPS-coupling density of SiO2 nanoparticles could influence the hydrophilic–lipophilic properties of SiO2 nanoparticles and subsequently influence the particle morphology of poly(MMA-co-BA)/SiO2 nanocomposite particles. With the increase of the surface MPS-coupling density of SiO2 nanoparticles, the morphology of nanocomposite particles changed from a raspberry-like one to a guava-like one. A formation mechanism of nanocomposite particles with various morphologies was proposed on the basis of the results of polymerization kinetics, particle size evolution in the process of polymerization, and particle size and morphology of the final nanocomposite particles.

Thermal-responsive ion-imprinted polymer based on magnetic mesoporous silica SBA-15 for selective removal of Sr(II) from aqueous solution

Highly thermal-responsive magnetic Sr(II)-imprinted polymer (Sr(II)-TMIIP) was successfully synthesized as a potential effective adsorbent for selective removal of Sr(II) in aquatic environments. First, magnetic polyethyleneimine-loaded mesoporous SBA-15 (Fe3O4@PEI-SBA-15) was prepared via a simple polymer-mediated self-assembly method. Then, the surface of Fe3O4@PEI-SBA-15 was endowed with reactive vinyl groups through modification with 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl trimethoxysilane (MPS). With the aid of vinyl groups, free radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), methacrylic acid (MAA), and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) in the presence of Sr(II) was performed with 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator, which provided a desired imprinted layer coating onto Fe3O4@PEI-SBA-15. The as-prepared Sr(II)-TMIIP was characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), UV, and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques. The results showed that the Sr(II)-TMIIP exhibited thermal stability, temperature and magnetic sensitivity (M s = 10.34 emu/g), and ordered mesoporous structure. Batch mode adsorption studies were conducted to investigate the specific binding kinetics, adsorption equilibrium, and selective recognition ability of Sr(II)-TMIIP. Adsorption equilibrium experiments showed that the adsorption amount strongly depended on temperature and reached a maximum around the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Regeneration experiments indicated that repeated adsorption and desorption by temperature swings were possible. Compared with the nonimprinted polymer (NIP), the Sr(II)-TMIIP had good temperature response and excellent selectivity and reusability, making it possible in applying for Sr(II) separation and controlled release.

One-pot synthesis of sub-50 nm vinyl- and acrylate-modified silica nanoparticles

In this work, silica nanoparticles (SNPs), vinyl and acrylate modified SNPs were synthesized by a novel one-pot synthesis method using TEOS and the appropriate organosilanes as the modifier molecules including vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS). Although, spherical SNPs with average diameter ranging from 50 to 700nm were synthesized, the reaction conditions were tuned to obtain the final modified silica nanoparticles with diameter smaller than 50nm. Various experimental conditions including solvent, ammonia concentration, reaction time and temperature were optimized. Particles were characterized using FTIR, TGA, SEM, TEM and water contact angle. It was found that the modifier silane, when used in one-pot method, can reduce the size of the silica nanoparticles due to the non-hydrolysable substitution in its chemical structure compared to TEOS. The one-pot method is a shortcut and versatile method for synchronized synthesis and modification of a wide range of customized silica nanoparticles using different modifier silanes.
