Geochemical and geochronological evidences from Cambrian to Ordovician protracted magmatism in the Istranca Massif, NW Türkiye

Plutonic rocks in different ages are cropted out and form the basement rocks in the Istranca Massif. One of the plutons located at the basement is the Cambrian-Ordovician Vize pluton (Vize-Kırklareli) and is distinguished from other plutons by some of its characteristic features. This pluton intruded into the high-grade metamorphic sedimentary rocks, and is unconformably overlay by Triassic low-grade metamorphic rocks and Eocene aged coral reef limestones (Soğucak Formation). Based on new whole rock geochemical and zircon UPb data concentrated in two different ages, it can be said that the Vize pluton was affected by protracted magmatic activity. The igneous minerals and texture of Vize pluton are partly preserved, It has a mylonitic texture, a distinct foliation consisting of light and dark zones. In addition, metagranites contain mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) in some places.The Vize pluton is an I-type pluton with predominantly peraluminous and slightly metaluminous character. It is also High-K, calc-alkaline, and reflecting volcanic arc and post-collisional tectonic settings. Mineral chemical analyses show that the mafic minerals in the Vize pluton consist of Fe-biotite and calcic amphibole (hornblende). Ti-in biotite thermometry shows that the temperature of the pluton in the final crystallization temperatures are between 834 and 850 °C (mean = 845 ± 4 °C), while the crystallization temperatures of amphiboles are between 876 and 910 °C (mean = 893 ± 22 °C). Crystallization depths are estimated to be a range of 6.5 to 7.9 km. It can be assumed that the oxygen fugacity of calcic amphiboles (logƒO2) is stabilized between −10.7 and − 11.3 bar (mean = −11.05 ± 0.4 bar). ∆NNO values are between 0.72 and 1.11 (mean = 0.96 ± 0.12) and H2O melt content is between 4.63 % and 5.43 % (mean = 5.04 ± 0.4 %). Oxygen fugacity values are among the typical values of calc-alkaline magma crystallization.The Vize pluton was crystallized in Cambrian to Ordovician times according to zircon UPb dating is concentrated in two different populations as 526.16 ± 3.26 Ma and 452.93 ± 2.76 Ma. All data obtained are consistent with the ages of the magmatism that produced the Vize Pluton in the Balkanides and Istranca Massif of 420–470 Ma (mean 447.17 ± 3.24 Ma) and indicate that it probably formed in the northern Gondwana. It was affected by the magma-mixing processes of coeval felsic and mafic magmas, and anatexis processes. Geochronological and geochemical data indicate the existence of a protracted magmatic activity related to convergent setting (long-lived magmatic arc) that forced the Vize-Pluton to undergo multi-stage melting-crystallization processes.

Distribution and Enrichment Mechanisms of Selenium in Stibnite from the Xujiashan Sb Deposit, Hubei Province, China

The Xujiashan Sb deposit located at the Mufushan fold thrust belt of the Yangtze block is one of the most important Sb deposits in this district. Stibnite in this deposit contains high and various contents of Se, but research on the distribution and enrichment of Se in stibnite remains limited. This paper conducts geochemical composition, C-H-O isotopic composition, and scanning electron microscopy morphology of the Xujiashan deposit to discuss the sources of ore-forming materials and fluid, as well as the distribution and enrichment mechanisms of selenium in stibnite. The results showed that the ores have trace element compositions comparable with the wall rocks, and Sb and Se contents are significantly higher than the average carbonate rocks. The δ13CPDB values of calcite and quartz range from −12.8‰ to 5.5‰, the δ18OSMOW values range from 20.4‰ to 24‰, and the δDV-SMOW values range from −57.8‰ to −86.9‰. Trace element and isotope compositions indicate that the ore-forming materials were mainly derived from the wall rocks (sedimentary–metamorphic rocks) that S, Se, and Sb dissolved during fluid–rock interactions. The ore-forming fluids were metamorphic water produced by metamorphism, which had experienced multistage mixing with meteoric water and organic-rich fluids. Selenium substitutes for sulfur in the stibnite crystal lattice, causing rhythmically distributed Se contents in stibnite, which resulted from multistage physicochemical changes in ore-forming fluids during crystallization. The varied patterns of Se contents are the result of different cross-sections of the stibnite.

Fluid source and ore-forming process of the Lishupo Au deposit, NE Hunan: Constraints from fluid inclusions, SIMS oxygen isotope, LA-ICP-MS pyrite trace elements and fsLA-ICP-MS quartz trace elements

The Lishupo Au deposit (4.3 t @ 4.76 g/t) is located in the central Jiangnan Orogen. The processes and origins of regional gold mineralization, as well as the characteristics of the ore-forming fluids, continue to be poorly understood. This study integrates field geology, fluid inclusions, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) O isotope, femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fsLA-ICP-MS) trace elements analysis for quartz, and LA-ICP-MS for trace elements study of pyrite to constrain the nature and source of ore-forming fluids, mechanism of gold precipitation, and ore genesis. Field investigations and microscopic observations reveal three mineralization stages at Lishupo: (1) the quartz-pyrite (Qtz1-Py1) stage; (2) the quartz-dolomite-polymetallic sulfides-gold (Qtz2-Py2) stage; and (3) the quartz-carbonate-pyrite (Qtz3-Py3) stage.Cathodoluminescence (CL) observations reveal that Qtz1 and Qtz2 have a homogeneous texture, while Qtz3 exhibits oscillatory zoning. Fluid inclusions in quartz suggest a CO2-H2O-NaCl ± N2 ± CH4 fluid system, which comprise H2O-CO2-NaCl, CO2-rich, and aqueous types. Microthermometry of fluid inclusions indicates low salinity (stage 1: 3.7–7.9 wt% NaCl equiv.; stage 2: 2.2–7.5 wt% NaCl equiv.; stage 3: 1.4–3.9 wt% NaCl equiv.) and medium to low temperature (stage 1: 313–341 °C; stage 2: 209–286 °C; stage 3: 139–198 °C) for ore-forming fluids, consistent with the low Ti content (<10 ppm) found in the quartz. The low Al content (7.99–20.7 ppm) of Qtz1 suggests that the ore-forming fluids were saturated with CO2 and had a near-neutral pH. The Al contents are higher and more variable in Qtz2 (10.7–1959 ppm) and Qtz3 (21.6–713 ppm), which may imply fluctuations in fluid pH. δ18OFluid values for various types of quartz (Qtz1: 9.02–10.95 ‰, Qtz2: 6.30–7.68 ‰, Qtz3: 3.45–3.94 ‰) indicate a metamorphic fluid origin for stages 1 and 2 fluids, which were mixed with the meteoric water during stage 3. The highest concentrations of Au and As in Py2 suggest that the Qtz2-Py2 stage is the primary ore stage. The Co/Ni ratios of all types of pyrite are less than 1, indicating that the ore-forming materials are derived from metamorphic sedimentary rocks. Fluid inclusion microthermometry suggests that fluid immiscibility was responsible for the gold deposition during the Qtz2-Py2 stage. Fluid immiscibility destabilizes Au(HS)2-, leading to the precipitation of native gold. These data strongly suggest that the Lishupo gold deposit is classified as an orogenic-type deposit. Integrating the existing geochronology data and geological context, we emphasize the presence of the Late Triassic orogenic gold deposit in the Jiangnan orogen. This highlights a significant exploration target area within this zone for future gold prospecting.

Metallization characteristics and gold ore controlling factors in the south region of Tra Nu - Phuoc Thanh, Quang Nam Province

The gold mineralization in the southern region of Tra Nu-Phuoc Thanh was initially discovered and assessed by the Central Geological Division. However, mineralization characteristics and ore-controlling factors in the Tra Nu-Phuoc Thanh area remain inadequately understood. To assess the gold mineralization potential in this research area, this study conducts a comprehensive synthesis of prior research findings, complemented by the analysis of an additional 50 thin sections, 100 thick sections, SEM scanning electron microscopy, and 10 ICP-MS samples. The research results reveal the presence of gold deposits within the study area, including native gold and electrum. The identified gold-bearing minerals in the deposits encompass quartz, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and goethite. The ore formations predominantly exhibit disseminated, vein, and breccia structures, along with granular, semi-granular, spherical, and solid inclusions. It has been ascertained that the gold ore in the study area belongs to the gold-quartz-sulfur formation and can be categorized into two types: gold-quartz-pyrite ore and polymetallic gold-quartz-sulfur ore. The ore is primarily situated within ancient metamorphic sedimentary rocks of the Kham Duc formation and young granitoid rocks of the Ba Na complex. Typically, the gold ore body occurs in a single-vessel form, with less common branched, vascular zone, and infiltrative vascular forms. All gold ore bodies are aligned along the fault systems, primarily oriented in the northeast-southwest direction. These sub-meridian fault systems serve as conduits for hydrothermal solutions carrying gold ore in the study area.

Apatite U-Pb geochronological and geochemical constraints on the Mazhala Au-Sb deposit in South Tibet, China

Due to lack of suitable datable minerals, timing of the Mazhala Au-Sb deposit in South Tibet remains unresolved. Also, previous geochemical studies suggest an ambiguous conclusion on the source of ore-forming fluid, with diverse viewpoints of magmatic water, mixed magmatic–meteoric water or mixed metamorphic-meteoric water, respectively. In this study, hydrothermal apatite U-Pb dating constrains the Mazhala Au-Sb deposits to have formed at ca. 35 Ma, consistent with the timing of Eocene leucogranite intrusions in South Tibet. The Mazhala Au-Sb mineralization occurred during the main collision stage to late collision stage in Eocene to Oligocene, and predates the Cuonadong Sn mineralization in South Tibet which occurred during the crustal extension stage in Miocene. An EPMA analysis shows the apatite belongs to fluorapatite that have F contents in the dominant range of 2–4%. The Mazhala apatite displays an overall MREE enrichment and LREE- and HREE depletion distribution pattern with positive Eu anomalies, and have δ18O values dominantly in the range of 16-19‰ with a mean δ18O‰ value of 17.74 ± 0.15‰ (2σ), which suggest a relatively homogenous chemical composition for the ore forming fluids with a relatively stable temperature regime. In combination with previous temperature estimates, the ore forming fluids are inferred to have a dominant δ18Ofluid value of 13-16‰, which overlap with metamorphic water.The combined age and geochemical data suggest Eocene leucogranite intrusion induced metamorphic fluid circulation within Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphic sedimentary rocks around the study area, which prompted precipitation of fluorapatite together with Au-Sb bearing pyrite and arsenopyrite in the Mazhala Au-Sb deposit. This study puts an emphasis on the contribution of metamorphic water as the dominant ore-forming fluid origin in the Mazhala Au-Sb deposit. In contrast, the close spatial and temporal association of the Cuonadong Sn polymetallic mineralization with the Miocene leucogranite intrusion-induced hydrothermal activity in the Cuonadong dome demonstrates that their genetic links, as was also evidenced by C-H-O-S-Pb isotope data that point to a dominant contritution of Miocene leucogranite to ore-forming fluid and materials for the Cuonadong Sn polymetallic ore deposits. As such, from a perspective of ore-forming model in South Tibet it be seen that during the main collision stage to late collision stage ore-forming fluid and materials were mainly derived from metamorphic water, whereas during the crustal extension stage, ore-forming fluid and materials were dominantly sourced from magmatic water.

Detrital zircons from high-pressure trench sediments (Qilian Orogen): Constraints on continental-arc accretion, subduction initiation and polarity of the Proto-Tethys Ocean

The Qilian Orogen in the northern Tibetan plateau records the tectonic history of the Proto-Tethys Ocean from its initial spreading, subduction to final closure. However, the timing of subduction initiation, subduction polarity and arc volcanic processes of the Proto-Tethys Ocean remain controversial. In this contribution, we present geochronological and Hf isotopic studies for 812 detrital zircons from blueschist- to eclogite-facies metamorphic sedimentary rocks from the trench and accretionary wedge in the Proto-Tethys subduction zone in the North Qilian suture zone. Out of all the U-Pb age data, the Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic zircons reveal the timing of opening and closure of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. We show that ∼50 % of the original sediments were derived from the arc-related magmas, with ages ranging from 535 Ma to 441 Ma. This range represents the time from subduction initiation to closure of the Proto-Tethys Ocean in the Qilian Orogen. Based on the closer resemblance of statistical ages to the crust to the north (Alxa) than the south (Central Qilian), we believe the initial subduction polarity of the Proto-Tethys Ocean is northward. The corresponding εHf(t) values (−11 ∼ +15) shows characteristics of continental arc formed by subduction process. The massive intrusion of arc magma during subduction led to a significant crustal growth, and the crustal thickness estimates based on Eu anomalies indicate that the thickness of the continental margin varies from ∼60 km at 500–490 Ma to ∼45 km at ca. 450 Ma, suggesting an evolution process from compression to back-arc extension.

Geochemical and geological characteristics indicate the wolframite mineralization for seeking the type of wolframite mine in Vau village and ajacent area (Dong Giang district, Quang Nam province)

Wolfram mineralization in the area of Vau village (Dong Giang district, Quang Nam province) is distributed along the small stream together with other sulfide mineralizations in the form of small to large boulders. Ore minerals are mainly sheelite, pyrhotite, arsenopyrite a little of chalcopyrite and pyrite. The ore is distributed in stockwork type in the gray, light gray metamorphic sedimentary rocks with quartz - mica composition alternated with quartz feldspar mica schist, sericite schist and sericitized schist of the A Vuong formation (Sequene 3). Sheelite exists in the area manifested by hornflization and bezeritization. Ajacent area have weak skarnation. They have manifestations of the wolframite deposit of skarn type. Geochemical characteristics: W in the ore reaches 2,323 ppm (0.023%), As - 110,366 ppm (1.10%), Co - 212.3 ppm, related granite (Ba Na block’s granite) reaching 1,517 ppm wofram situated at the edge of the magma block (fine-grained alaskite, similar to the composition of boulders in the ore strip). There is small-grained granite with a content of 794 ppm at the center of mass. Thus, the two granite types have high level of metallogical specialization of wolframite (Ktt = 397 is fine-grained granite and Ktt = 758.7 is alaskite Granite). Besides, this rock has metallogical specialization of As (277.4 ppm in fine-grained granite, 29.9 ppm in alaskite).

In situ multiple sulfur isotopes and chemistry of pyrite support a sedimentary source-rock model for the Linwang Carlin-type gold deposit in the Youjiang basin, southwest China

The Linwang gold deposit is a representative example of Carlin-type gold deposits in Youjiang basin, southwest China. High-grade ores are hosted in silicified and brecciated siltstone, sandstone, and mudstone of the Middle Triassic and are controlled by high-angle reverse faults. Optical microscopy pyrite texture, in situ laser ablation-inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace elements, and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) multiple sulfur isotopes analyses are used to examine the different types of pyrites to constrain the sources of reduced sulfur and metals for the Linwang deposit.Petrography and pyrite chemistry studies distinguished three generations of pyrite: Pre-ore pyrite (Py 1) and ore pyrites (Py 2 and Py3). Pre-ore pyrite is framboidal, anhedral to euhedral pyrite with highest concentrations of Co, Ni, and Pb and is interpreted to have a sedimentary (diagenetic) origin. Ore pyrites were formed by hydrothermal fluids via sulfidation of Fe-bearing minerals in the host rocks. They commonly rimed and partially replaced the pre-ore pyrite and have an As-rich inner rim (Py 2) and an Au-rich outer rim (Py 3) with lowest contents of Co, Ni, and Pb. All pyrites contain Au, As, Sb, Cu, Tl, and Se, with increasing concentrations from Py 1 to Py 3.In situ SIMS multiple S isotope analyses show that all pyrites in the Linwang deposit have narrow ranges of δ34S values, with average of +5.13‰ for Py 1, +4.84‰ for Py 2, and +4.53‰ for Py 3, and near zero of Δ33S values (−0.02‰ to +0.03‰), suggesting that the S within the Linwang deposit was most likely sourced from the Triassic sedimentary rocks that host the deposit. A near zero Δ33S signature in all pyrites indicates no record of the assimilation of Archean sulfur, implying the deep basement of Archean rocks beneath the basin were not involved the formation of the Linwang deposit.Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of ore fluids (δ18OH2O = +11.7‰ to +16.5‰, δD = −71‰ to −57‰) indicate a metamorphic origin. Based on these data, we propose a sedimentary source-rock model for the Linwang deposit in which the ore fluids were generated by release of previous Au-bearing sedimentary pyrites during metamorphism of sedimentary rocks. The stress relaxation of Yanshanian orogeny resulted in the ore fluids flowed upward along the fault zones into structural highs where they reacted with Fe-bearing minerals in the host rocks to deposit Au-rich pyrite. The preconcentration of Au, As, and Sb in sedimentary pyrite and gold deposition process are key to the formation of the Linwang deposit and may apply to the genesis of other Carlin-type gold deposits in the Youjiang basin.

Influence of carbonate rocks on soil properties in the humid tropical climate of atlantic forest, Rio de Janeiro –Brazil

Soil carbonate accumulation plays an important role in C sequestration, accounting for approximately 40% of the C stored in soils worldwide. Under humid tropical climate these carbonates are rapidly dissolved, intensifying CO2 emissions. Despite this, little is known about the weathering of carbonates in areas with complex geology. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the parent material on soil attributes and weathering processes under humid tropical climate conditions along toposequences formed by dolomitic marbles and calc-silicate rocks interspersed with garnet-biotite gneiss. Samples and soils profiles were collected on sites of both parental materials and at different points of a toposequence, namely: upper third, middle third and lower third of a slope. The profiles were analyzed for their morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical attributes. The attributes of soils formed from metamorphic sedimentary rocks were more influenced by geological processes than pedological ones. It was found that the nature of the parent material was the main responsible for the attributes of the profiles, especially the strongly alkaline pH, being greater than 8.0 in most soil horizons, and the high contents of exchangeable Ca2+ and CaCO3 equivalent, with maximum values of 40.6 cmolc kg−1 and 763 g kg−1, respectively. As for mineralogical composition, it was verified the occurrence of minerals such as talc, vermiculite and Fe and Ti oxides, with metamorphic processes and the addition of hydrothermal fluids being the main responsible for the presence of these minerals. The supply of high contents of basic cations, with maximum values of 61.4 cmolc kg−1, high Si/Al ratio (reaching values close to 5.0) and the high contents of CaCO3 conditioning the strongly alkaline pH hinder the dissolution of silicates, even those with low resistance to weathering, despite the hot and humid climate conditions. The action of weathering processes in humid tropical climate is more marked in acidic materials, being responsible for the in situ formation of kaolinite from the alteration of mica and feldspar.

Mixed metamorphic and fluid graphite deposition in Palaeoproterozoic supracrustal rocks of the Lewisian Complex, NW Scotland

AbstractGraphite deposits may form alternatively by metamorphism of sedimentary rocks and from fluids. Both types occur in supracrustal successions within the Lewisian Complex of Northwest Scotland, and similarly in Palaeoproterozoic supracrustal rocks across the North Atlantic region in Canada, Greenland and Scandinavia. Carbon isotope compositions show that the graphite in Scotland had a mixed origin from metamorphism of sedimentary organic matter (schists) and the decarbonation of limestones (marbles). Raman spectroscopy shows that most of the graphite in Scotland exhibits some structural disorder, unlike the complete order in graphite vein ore deposits across the region. Exceptionally, where graphite was precipitated from fluid, in albitized rock in Tiree and Scardroy, it is fully ordered. While organic matter may survive granulite facies metamorphism without being transformed to fully ordered graphite, it can yield commercially more valuable ordered graphite when mobilized in a fluid.

Triassic–Jurassic evolution of the eastern North China Craton: Insights from the Lushun-Dalian area, South Liaodong Peninsula, NE China

AbstractThe Lushun-Dalian area of the South Liaodong Peninsula, in NE China, located in the SE margin of the North China Craton (NCC) exposes a suite of Middle-Late Proterozoic low-grade metamorphic sedimentary rocks which can be divided into a lower competent layer, a middle incompetent layer, and an upper competent layer on the basis of lithology and deformation style. Two stages of deformation recorded both in the metasedimentary rocks and a magmatic complex intruded in them indicate that the Lushun-Dalian area is a key region to decipher the Triassic–Jurassic tectonic evolution of the eastern NCC. The earliest D1 deformation mylonitized the magmatic complex and thrusted it northeastward over the low-grade metasedimentary rocks, in which a series of NE-verging folds and NE-directed brittle thrust faults developed. The D2 deformation erased the D1 fabrics in the incompetent layer by a top-to-the-NW ductile shearing and refolded the D1 fabrics in the lower and upper competent units, producing a series of km-scale SW-plunging folds. New zircon secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb ages from the magmatic complex and the granite porphyry dikes intruded in it, combined with the unconformity between the low-grade metasedimentary rocks and the Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks, indicate that D1 and D2 occurred after 211 Ma and before the Early Cretaceous. The decrease of the deformation intensity of D1 and D2 from the Lushun-Dalian area toward the interior of the NCC in the NE and NW directions suggests that D1 was the structural response in the overriding plate to the NCC-South China Block convergence during the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic, and D2 was the structural response to the northwestward subduction of the Paleo–Pacific plate beneath the NCC in the Middle-Late Jurassic. The superimposition of D2 on D1 recorded a significant tectonic transformation from the nearly E-W–trending Tethysian domain to the NE-SW–trending Pacific domain.

Rock strength and structural controls on fluvial erodibility: Implications for drainage divide mobility in a collisional mountain belt

Numerical model simulations and experiments have suggested that when migration of the main drainage divide occurs in a mountain belt, it can lead to the rearrangement of river catchments, rejuvenation of topography, and changes in erosion rates and sediment flux. We assess the progressive mobility of the drainage divide in three lithologically and structurally distinct groups of bedrock in the High Atlas (NW Africa). The geological age of bedrock and its associated tectonic architecture in the mountain belt increases from east to west in the study area, allowing us to track both variations in rock strength and structural configuration which influence drainage mobility during erosion through an exhuming mountain belt. Collection of field derived measurements of rock strength using a Schmidt hammer and computer based extraction of river channel steepness permit estimations of contrasts in fluvial erodibilities of rock types. The resulting difference in fluvial erodibility between the weakest and the strongest lithological unit is up to two orders of magnitude. Published evidence of geomorphic mobility of the drainage divide indicates that such a range in erodibilities in horizontal stratigraphy of the sedimentary cover may lead to changes in erosion rates as rivers erode through strata, leading to drainage divide migration. In contrast, we show that the faulted and folded metamorphic sedimentary rocks in the centre of the mountain belt coincide with a stable drainage divide. Finally, where the strong igneous rocks of the crystalline basement are exposed after erosion of the covering meta-sediments, there is a decrease in fluvial erodibility of up to a factor of three, where the drainage divide is mobile towards the centre of the exposed crystalline basement. The mobility of the drainage divide in response to erosion through rock-types and their structural configuration in a mountain belt has implications for the perception of autogenic dynamism of drainage networks and fluvial erosion in mountain belts, and the interpretation of the geomorphology and downstream stratigraphy.

Genesis of the Selinsing gold deposit, Peninsular Malaysia: Constraints from mineralogy, geochemistry and in situ sulfur isotope compositions of sulfides

As a renowned orogenic lode gold deposit, the Selinsing gold deposit is located in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. Geologically, the gold deposit is characterized by auriferous quartz veins and fine-grained gold minerals coexisted with sulfides, and the ore body is hosted by low-grade metamorphic sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks. Furthermore, gold mineralization is closely related to tectonic deformation. Four main stages of vein formation have been identified, namely, (1) quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite vein, (2) quartz-pyrite-gold vein, (3) quartz-stibnite-pyrite vein, and (4) quartz-chlorite vein. The occurrence of gold includes two types, i.e., visible gold and invisible gold. The former is featured by coarse-grained gold (millimeter-scale, such as auriferous quartz veins) and fine-grained gold (micron-scale, such as native gold, calaverite, and electrum), the latter is contained in pyrite and arsenopyrite in the form of nano-scale native gold particles (Au0) and lattice gold (Au1+). The geothermometer of arsenopyrite and chlorite as well as temperature-sulfur fugacity diagram indicate that the temperature and sulfur fugacity of hydrothermal fluid decrease gradually. Considering that the sulfur fugacity drops gradually and aqueous inclusions coexist with carbonic inclusions, it is inferred that sulfuration reaction in which sulfur is consumed to produce sulfides and fluid immiscibility or phase separation may be responsible for gold precipitation. Tested by LA-MC-ICP-MS, the in-situ sulfur isotope compositions of sulfides formed in different stages are homogenous (about −1 to 1‰) and the calculated H2S-dominated hydrothermal fluid is also consistent (about −2 to 0‰) in sulfur isotope compositions, which reflect the mantle or ultrabasic rock and basic rock or magmatic rocks may be a potential source of sulfur. Combined with possible source and tectonic evolution of Peninsular Malaysia, possible metallogenic processes are proposed to explain genesis of the Selinsing gold deposit and other gold deposits in the Central Belt, i.e., ore-forming fluid was differentiated from oceanic crust and/or fertilized mantle wedge, or ore-forming fluid may be sourced from concealed magmatic rocks that formed by subduction of the Palaeo-Tethys toward the East Malaysia block.

Mesozoic tectonic evolution of eastern China: Insights from the Changshan Islands, NE China

The Changshan islands are scattered among the Yellow Sea east of the Liaodong Peninsula, west of North Korea and north of the Sulu Orogenic Belt. They consist of three lithotectonic units: i) Archean gneiss, ii) Paleoproterozoic marble and micaschists, and iii) Neoproterozoic weakly metamorphic sedimentary rocks. Three stages of deformation (D1-D3) documented in this study indicate that Changshan islands are a key region to decipher the Mesozoic tectonic evolution of eastern China. The earliest deformation D1 corresponds to a ductile deformation with NE-SW trending mineral and stretching lineations and top-to-the-NE sense of shear. The deformation D2, observed in the micaschists and sedimentary rocks, is characterized by the SW-verging folds with NE-dipping axial planar cleavage S2 and SW-directed thrusting. D2 could be considered as the back-folding and back-thrusting of the D1. D3 is expressed by the NE-SW trending low-angle brittle and ductile detachment faults representing a NW-SE extensional event.To the east of Guanglu and Guapi islands, two samples from a granite pluton that only record D3 fabrics yield SIMS zircon ages of 165.4 ± 1.6 Ma and 164.7 ± 1.5 Ma, which indicate that D1 and D2 occurred earlier than 165 Ma, while D3 is younger than this age. Similar geometric and kinematic features with those of the South Liaodong Peninsula suggest that D1 and D2 occurred in the Middle-Late Triassic as the structural response of overriding plate to the continental subduction of the South China Block (SCB) beneath the North China Craton (NCC), while the D3 occurred in the Early Cretaceous during the development of the Liaonan Metamorphic Core Complex (MCC). The ductile shear zone and brittle normal faults of the Changshan islands represent the early extensional structures of the Liaonan MCC. They may develop further southeastward and controlled the early development of the North Yellow Sea Basin.

P–T–X conditions on the genesis of orogenic Au (As, Bi, Ag) deposit in metasedimentary rocks of the Buracão Area, Araí Group, Brasília Fold Belt, Brazil

The orogenic Au (As, Bi, Ag) mineralization (up to 31 g/t) of the Buracão area is hosted in the metasedimentary Paleo–Mesoproterozoic Traíras Formation, Araí Group, Brasília Fold Belt, Brazil. In order to discuss the P–T–X conditions that generated this mineralization, we present mineralogical, geochemical and fluid inclusion data of veins, gold and wall rocks. Coupled with previous structural data these additional data allow us to link metamorphism and deformation with fluid migration and ore genesis. The integration of fluid inclusion microthermometry with mineral geothermobarometers and structures show that rocks of the study area evolved from: (i) syn–D1a metamorphic peak (400–560 °C, <6 kbar), through to the (ii) development of syn–D1b type I barren veins from low salinity H2O–NaCl fluids during syn– to late–metamorphic peak; and to the (iii) development of syn–D2a type II veins with the pyritic ore precipitation from low to high salinity H2O–CO2–CH4–NaCl ± HCO3 fluids during post–metamorphic peak (345–285 °C, 2.7–1.6 kbar).The high fineness gold nuggets accompanied by As, Bi and Ag within pyrite–arsenopyrite–bismuthinite association in the pyritic ore allows the Buracão area to be classified as “a gold-only orogenic ore deposit”. Fluid inclusion compounds and the enrichment of As, Bi, Pb, Cu, Te, Se and Ag in pyrite from the pyritic ore point out to metamorphism of carbonaceous phyllites and carbonate rocks of the Traíras Formation as a source for ore–forming fluids. We suggest that sulfur and gold in these fluids were derived by metamorphism of sedimentary rocks and conversion of pyrite into pyrrhotite in a metamorphic–hydrothermal system. The Au(HS)2−–bearing fluids percolated along intrabasinal D2a regional shear zones through the Traíras Formation towards the Buracão area, where they precipitated type II ore–bearing veins within local structures. The ore precipitation was induced by contrasting fO2–fS2 related to the interaction between the sulfur-bearing fluid and host magnetite–graphite phyllites. The lithological control is represented by a series of reactions such as 2FeO(in silicates/magnetite) + 4Au(HS)2−(aq) + 4H+(aq) ↔ 2FeS2(s) + 4Au(s) + 4H2S(aq) + 2H2O(l).The deposits of the Buracão area and other orogenic gold deposits hosted in metasedimentary rocks in the Brasília Fold Belt and worldwide confirm the potential of ore genesis in zones that do not show any relation with (meta)igneous rocks, thus, expanding the exploration possibilities in metasedimentary successions.

Depleted uranium residues, NORMs and 137Cs in the coastal zone soil of Musandam Peninsula, Hurmuz strait region, Sultanate of Oman

Musandam peninsula located at one of the most important marine strait overlooking the Arabian/Parisian Gulf. Environmentally, this area is characterized by its primitivistic status and vulnerable to any natural or manmade disturbances. This work presents the second phase of a comprehensive radiation measurement in Musandam Peninsula environment amid to investigating the presences of depleted uranium (DU) residues and assessing the current levels of 226Ra, 228Ra, 40K and 137Cs in surface soil of coastal area. For this purpose, thirty representative soil samples were collected and analyzed for 235U using gamma rays spectrometry and for total U using ICP-OES techniques. Results revealed that the range of isotopic abundance of 235U was (0.70%–0.77%) with an average of 0.72%, confirming the detected uranium is naturally originated from the geological formations of investigated soil. Additionally, the values of Th/U ratios were calculated to be ranged from 0.37 to 1.95 with an average of 1.5 indicating the dominant geological formations are metamorphic sedimentary rocks that contain low levels of Th. The averages of radioactivity levels of NORMs indicated 16.02 Bqkg−1, 7.83 Bqkg−1 and 174.03 Bqkg−1 for 226Ra, 228Ra, and 40K respectively. The average of areal concentrations for 137Cs was 2481.5 Bqm−2 ranges from 1040 Bq/m2 to 9225 Bqm−2. The total external annual effective dose from all measured radionuclides was 23 μSv 237Cs contribution is 1% while 238U, 232Th series and 40K radionuclides contributions are 32%, 28% and 39% respectively. Radium equivalent, external, and internal radiation hazard indices indicate no radiological anomaly.

Modeling of non-equilibrium mass-exchange processes in geo-systems

This paper presents a new mathematical model of coupled processes of filtration, deformations of porous skeleton and mass transfer between solid and liquid phases in sedimentary and igneous rocks. A numerical solution is obtained and processes which can be described by the model are analyzed. Examples of such processes are: formation of a fluid layer along metamorphism of sedimentary rocks, formation of a structure and filtration characteristics of the Bazhenov Shale, appearance of intrusive igneous body (lopolith).

Zn and Pb mobility during metamorphism of sedimentary rocks and potential implications for some base metal deposits

Comprehension of the genesis of Pb-Zn ore systems is currently limited by a poor understanding of where these metals are sourced from. Our study of metal mobility during regional metamorphism in the Mt. Lofty Ranges, South Australia, demonstrates that in staurolite-absent siliciclastic metasedimentary rocks, biotite contains >80 % of the bulk rock Zn, as well as a considerable proportion of the total Pb. Fluid flow through these metasedimentary rocks led to a continuous depletion of Pb and Zn on a mineral and bulk rock scale during prograde regional metamorphism. We calculate that ∼80 % of the bulk rock Zn and ∼50 % of the bulk rock Pb were mobilised, mainly through reactions involving biotite. These reactions led to a calculated Pb and Zn “loss” of ∼2.7 and 27 Mt, respectively, in the high-grade metamorphic zone. Halogen contents of apatite and biotite and bulk rock Zn isotope data provide evidence that Cl-rich metamorphic fluids were important for metal transport. Hence, fluid flow accompanying prograde metamorphism of typical sedimentary rocks can mobilise base metals to the degree required to potentially supply significant Pb-Zn ore systems.

The Whole‐Rock Geochemical Composition of the Wudaogou Group in Eastern Yanbian, NE China–New Clues to Its Relationship with the Gold and Tungsten Mineralization and the Evolution of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean

AbstractThe late Paleozoic Wudaogou Group, one of the oldest metamorphic units in the eastern Yanbian area, has important tectonic and metallogenic significance. Here, we provide new insights into their protoliths, tectonic setting of the metamorphic rocks and their relationships with the gold and tungsten mineralization, using new petrographic and whole‐rock geochemical data for various lithologies within the Wudaogou Group. The protolith of the metamorphic rocks of the Wudaogou Group was intermediate–basic volcanic rocks (e.g. basaltic andesite, trachyandesite, and basalt) and sedimentary rocks including argillaceous rocks, quartz sandstone, arkose and clayish greywacke, as well as pyroclastic sedimentary rock, covering tuffaceous sandstone. Before undergoing late Paleozoic epidote–amphibolite facies regional metamorphism, these protoliths were formed during the middle–late Permian in an island arc setting within a continental margin collage zone. Combined with the regional tectonic evolution, it can be speculated that the formation and the subsequent metamorphism of the protoliths of the metamorphic rocks from the Wudaogou Group were influenced by the change from subduction to collision of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. Similarities of the rare earth element (REE) patterns and parameters among the metamorphic rocks within the Wudaogou Group, auriferous ores from the Xiaoxi'nancha gold (copper) deposit, and scheelites from the Yangjingou tungsten deposit, together with the favorable metallogenic element contents within the metamorphic rock series, imply that the Wudaogou Group could provide parts of metallic material for the gold and tungsten mineralization in the eastern Yanbian area, as exemplified by the Yangjingou deposit and Xiaoxi'nancha deposit, respectively. Further, the metamorphic sedimentary rocks, especially the metamorphic sandstones, quartz schists and quartz mica schists within the Wudaogou Group, have closer genetic relationships with the Yangjingou tungsten mineralization. However, the specific lithologies within this group which control the gold mineralization are still uncertain, and need further research.
