Experimental evaluation of a hydrogel composite desiccant wheel for dehumidification with high water uptake and low regeneration temperature

Rotary dehumidification, a key method for continuous solid adsorption dehumidification, is extensively utilised in various industrial and practical applications. The performance of the adsorbent within the desiccant wheel is a major determinant of its energy efficiency in practical applications. While studies on Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and polymer desiccant wheels exist, the majority of rotary dehumidification systems continue to employ traditional adsorbents like silica gel and zeolite, which are plagued by low dehumidification capacity and high energy consumption issues. Super hygroscopic hydrogel, enhanced with a hygroscopic agent, has gained prominence in air treatment because of its outstanding hygroscopicity and low regeneration temperature. With the goal of integrating advanced materials into practical engineering applications and mitigating the heat and mass transfer loss and adsorption/desorption performance degradation due to volume expansion and viscous agglomeration post-water uptake in large-scale super hygroscopic hydrogel applications, this study successfully developed a hydrogel wheel, measuring 350 mm in diameter and 200 mm in thickness, using a honeycomb-shaped glass fibre paper substrate. Experimental findings demonstrate that the hydrogel desiccant wheel outperforms both the MOF and commercial low-temperature silica gel wheels under all tested environmental conditions. This advantage is particularly noticeable at 15 °C and 30 % Relative Humidity (RH), where the moisture content differential (Δd) in the hydrogel system is 2.96 g/kg, 1.89 times greater than the MOF system’s 1.56 g/kg and 5.19 times higher than the silica gel’s 0.57 g/kg. Furthermore, the controlled variable method was used to assess the impact of each operational parameter on the hydrogel wheel’s performance in both low and high moisture conditions, offering design insights for engineering applications.

Development and Characterization of a Tunable Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) for the Synthesis of a Rare Sugar D-Tagatose.

D-tagatose is a valuable rare sugar with potential health benefits such as antiobesity, low-calorie, prebiotic, and anticancer. However, its production is mainly depending on chemical or enzymatic catalysis. Herein, a cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was developed at room temperature in an aqueous system using a self-assembly method. The L-arabinose isomerase (L-AI) was immobilized into this unique MOF by an in situ encapsulation process. The morphology and structural aspects of the MOF preparations were characterized by different analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) suggested the high thermal stability of the L-AI@MOF. Significantly, the immobilized catalyst exhibited enhanced catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) of 3.22mM-1s-1 and improved turnover number (kcat) of 57.32s-1. The L-AI@MOF efficiently catalyzes the synthesis of D-tagatose from D-galactose up to the equilibrium level (~ 50%) of isomerization in heterogeneous catalysis. Interestingly, L-AI@MOF was found stable and reusable for more than five cycles without the requirement of additional metal ions during catalysis. Thus, L-AI stabilized in the MOF system demonstrated a higher catalytic activity and potential guidance for the sustainable synthesis of rare sugar D-tagatose.

Insights into the Activity and Stability of Dual-Site Single Atom Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction Using a 2D Phthalocyanine-MOF

Hydrogen fuel cells have been considered as an effective strategy to shift fossil-fuel based economy to hydrogen economy. The performance of the fuel cells is often limited by the slow kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 2D Phthalocyanine offer dual-site single atom catalyst (SAC) where M1 site typically amine coordinated node and M2 site is the phthalocyanine center (M1/M2 = Co, Cu, Ni). Here we conduct both computational studies and experimental measurements to elucidate the site selectivity and activity of two- and four-electron ORR process for pure (contains same element on both sites) and mixed (different M1 and M2) MOF system, and their overall stability. Using density functional theory (DFT), we find that regardless of site, Cobalt (Co) element shows better four-electron ORR activity than other elements in the mixed MOF system. Our integrated crystal orbital Hamilton population (ICOHP) calculations indicate that for pure MOF system, M1(d)-4N(2p) bonds are stronger than M2(d)-4N(2p), which raises d-band center of M2 sites closer to Fermi level, hence improves its activity towards four-electron ORR process. For mixed systems, M2 sites activity largely depends on the geometrical effects caused by M1 site elements. Our activity calculations reveal that Co (as M2) in the Ni-Co mixed MOF systems predicts lowest overpotential for ORR among all studied MOF system. Our dissolution mechanism and stability calculations show that Cu (as M1) causes stress/strain within the mixed MOF system denoting least stable among all studied during ORR process. In experiment, we found Co-based MOF, particularly Ni-Co demonstrates the highest kinetic activity and Cu is the least stable element, showing excellent agreement with computational studies. We hope this study will help in understanding the insight into the rational design of highly active and stable MOF for electrochemical processes. Ordered Transfer from 3D-Oriented MOF Superstructures to Polymeric Films: Microfabrication, Enhanced Chemical Stability, and Anisotropic Fluorescent Patterns.

Films and patterns of 3D-oriented metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) afford well-ordered pore structures extending across centimeter-scale areas. These macroscopic domains of aligned pores are pivotal to enhance diffusion along specific pathways and orient functional guests. The anisotropic properties emerging from this alignment are beneficial for applications in ion conductivity and photonics. However, the structure of 3D-oriented MOF films and patterns can rapidly degrade under humid and acidic conditions. Thus, more durable 3D-ordered porous systems are desired for practical applications. Here, oriented porous polymer films and patterns are prepared by using heteroepitaxially oriented N3-functionalized MOF films as precursor materials. The film fabrication protocol utilizes an azide-alkyne cycloaddition on the Cu2(AzBPDC)2DABCO MOF. The micropatterning protocol exploits the X-ray sensitivity of azide groups in Cu2(AzBPDC)2DABCO, enabling selective degradation in the irradiated areas. The masked regions of the MOF film retain their N3-functionality, allowing for subsequent cross-linking through azide-alkyne coupling. Subsequent acidic treatment removes the Cu ions from the MOF, yielding porous polymer micro-patterns. The polymer has high chemical stability and shows an anisotropic fluorescent response. The use of 3D-oriented MOF systems as precursors for the fabrication of oriented porous polymers will facilitate the progress of optical components for photonic applications.

Bioinspired Heterocoordination in Adaptable Cobalt Metal-Organic Framework for DNA Epigenetic Modification Detection.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show unique advantages in simulating the dynamics and fidelity of natural coordination. Inspired by zinc finger protein, a second linker was introduced to affect the homogeneous MOF system and thus facilitate the emergence of diverse functionalities. Under the systematic identification of 12 MOF species (i.e., metal ions, linkers) and 6 second linkers (trigger), a dissipative system consisting of Co-BDC-NO2 and o-phenylenediamine (oPD) was screened out, which can rapidly and in situ generate a high photothermal complex (η = 36.9%). Meanwhile, both the carboxylation of epigenetic modifications and metal ion (Fe3+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+ and Mn2+) screening were utilized to improve the local coordination environment so that the adaptable Co-MOF growth on the DNA strand was realized. Thus, epigenetic modification information on DNA was converted to an amplified metal ion signal, and then oPD was further introduced to generate bimodal dissipative signals by which a simple, high-sensitivity detection strategy of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (LOD = 0.02%) and 5-formylcytosine (LOD = 0.025‰) was developed. The strategy provides one low-cost method (< 0.01 $/sample) for quantifying global epigenetic modifications, which greatly promotes epigenetic modification-based early disease diagnosis. This work also proposes a general heterocoordination design concept for molecular recognition and signal transduction, opening a new MOF-based sensing paradigm.

Metal-organic frameworks as an active substrate for cell-interaction studies and cell-on-a-chip platforms

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of nanomaterials with immense biomedical potential for their unique interactions with biological and organic materials. In this work, we select two candidate two-dimensional (2D) MOF systems based on Fe3+ and Ni2+ metal centers and 2-aminoterephthalate acid ligand (Fe-MOF and Ni-MOF) and evaluate their performance as an active interface for study of cell-interactions. 2D Fe-MOF and Ni-MOF were synthesized onto hydroxyl-modified gold and glass substrates using a layer-by-layer liquid-phase-epitaxy (LbL-LPE) growth at room temperature and used as active substrates (Fe-MOF/glass, Fe-MOF/Au, Ni-MOF/glass and Ni-MOF/Au, respectively) for MTT cell-proliferation and reactive oxygen species tests using the PC-12 cell-line in order to investigate the biocompatibility. Immunostaining and morphological analyses of PC-12 cells on MOF interfaces suggested a stronger cell-substrate interaction in comparison to glass and were further characterized using the Electrical Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS) technique, here for the first time, employed to study cell attachment, spreading and proliferation on 2D Fe-MOF. The 2D Fe-MOF showed superior long-term stability in cell culture medium by recording impedance over 24 h, crucial to monitor cell-dynamics at a solid-liquid interface. A significant increase of interfacial impedance was observed in ECIS, due to PC-12 cells adhering onto 2D Fe-MOF, which was also confirmed by the focused ion beam etching followed by scanning electron microscopy. Our novel findings, therefore, suggest 2D MOFs as highly suitable platform for the study of cell-related interactions using electrical techniques and potentially pave the way for future use of MOFs for bioelectronics and biosensor applications.

Ionic Liquid Modified Fe-Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks as Efficient and Selective Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction.

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal platforms for heterogeneous photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction. To further explore photocatalytic MOF systems, it is also necessary to consider their ability to fine-tune the microenvironments of the active sites, which affects their overall catalytic operation. Herein, a kind of ionic liquid (IL, here is 3-butyric acid-1-methyl imidazolium bromide, BAMeImBr) was anchored to iron-porphyrinic Zr-MOFs with different amounts to obtain ILx@MOF-526 (MOF-526 = Zr6O4(OH)4(FeTCBPP)3, FeTCBPP = iron 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(4'-carboxyphenyl)phenyl]-porphyrin, x = 100, 200, and 400). ILx@MOF-526 series was designed to investigate the effects of the microenvironmental and electronic structural modification on the efficiency and selectivity of the photochemical reduction of CO2 after introducing IL fragments. Compared to parent MOF-526, the production and selectivity of CO were greatly improved in the absence of any photosensitizer under visible light by the ILx@MOF-526 series. Among them, the CO yield of IL200@MOF-526 was up to 14.0 mmol g-1 within 72 h with a remarkable CO selectivity of 97%, which is superior to that of MOF-526 without BAMeIm+ modification and other amounts of BAMeIm+ loaded. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the mechanism of the CO2 reduction.

Tuning Two-Dimensional Phthalocyanine Dual Site Metal-Organic Framework Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an interesting opportunity for catalysis, particularly for metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) motifs by providing an organized porous structural pattern and well-defined active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a key need for hydrogen fuel cells and related sustainable energy technologies. In this work, we leverage electrochemical testing with computational models to study the electronic and structural properties in the MOF systems and their relationship to ORR activity and stability based on dual transitional metal centers. The MOFs consist of two M1 metals with amine nodes coordinated to a single M2 metal with a phthalocyanine linker, where M1/M2 = Co, Ni, or Cu. Co-based metal centers, in particular Ni-Co, demonstrate the highest overall activity of all nine tested MOFs. Computationally, we identify the dominance of Co sites, relative higher importance of the M2 site, and the role of layer M1 interactions on the ORR activity. Selectivity measurements indicate that M1 sites of MOFs, particularly Co, exhibit the lowest (<4%), and Ni demonstrates the highest (>46%) two-electron selectivity, in good agreement with computational studies. Direct in situ stability characterization, measuring dissolved metal ions, and calculations, using an alkaline stability metric, confirm that Co is the most stable metal in the MOF, while Cu exhibits notable instability at the M1. Overall, this study reveals how atomistic coupling of electronic and structural properties affects the ORR performance of dual site MOF catalysts and opens new avenues for the tunable design and future development of these systems for practical electrochemical applications.

Improving gas adsorption modeling for MOFs by local calibration of Hubbard U parameters.

While computational screening with density functional theory (DFT) is frequently employed for the screening of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas separation and storage, commonly applied generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) exhibit self-interaction errors, which hinder the predictions of adsorption energies. We investigate the Hubbard U parameter to augment DFT calculations for full periodic MOFs, targeting a more precise modeling of gas molecule-MOF interactions, specifically for N2, CO2, and O2. We introduce a calibration scheme for the U parameter, which is tailored for each MOF, by leveraging higher-level calculations on the secondary building unit (SBU) of the MOF. When applied to the full periodic MOF, the U parameter calibrated against hybrid HSE06 calculations of SBUs successfully reproduces hybrid-quality calculations of the adsorption energy of the periodic MOF. The mean absolute deviation of adsorption energies reduces from 0.13eV for a standard GGA treatment to 0.06eV with the calibrated U, demonstrating the utility of the calibration procedure when applied to the full MOF structure. Furthermore, attempting to use coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples calculations of isolated SBUs for this calibration procedure shows varying degrees of success in predicting the experimental heat of adsorption. It improves accuracy for N2 adsorption for cases of overbinding, whereas its impact on CO2 is minimal, and ambiguities in spin state assignment hinder consistent improvements of O2 adsorption. Our findings emphasize the limitations of cluster models and advocate the use of full periodic MOF systems with a calibrated U parameter, providing a more comprehensive understanding of gas adsorption in MOFs.

Understanding and Controlling Molecular Compositions and Properties in Mixed-Linker Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive materials for photo- and thermally activated catalysis due to their unique structural features related to the porphyrin moiety, guest-accessible porosity, and high chemical tunability. In this study, we report the synthetic incorporation of nonplanar β-ethyl-functionalized porphyrin linkers into the framework structure of PCN-222, obtaining a solid-solution series of materials with different modified linker contents. Comprehensive analysis by a combination of characterization techniques, such as NMR, UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and N2 sorption analysis, allows for the confirmation of linker incorporation. A detailed structural analysis of intrinsic material properties, such as the thermal response of the different materials, underlines the complexity of synthesizing and understanding such materials. This study presents a blueprint for synthesizing and analyzing porphyrin-based mixed-linker MOF systems and highlights the hurdles of characterizing such materials.

Effect of metal-ligand interactions on magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional Kagome structured perthiolated coronene (PTC) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

In recent years, the potential applications of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in fields like spintronics have drawn increasing attention. Inspired by the successful synthesis of a perthiolated coronene (PTC)-Fe MOF structure, this study explores the fine-tuning of its electronic and magnetic structure by substituting Fe elements with various transition metals. Our calculations demonstrate a substantial increase in the Curie temperature (Tc) by a factor of 5 for Co and 10 for Mn when replacing Fe. This enhancement is attributed to the elevated electron density near the Fermi level, facilitating the generation of additional itinerant electrons crucial for the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange mechanism. However, substituting Fe with V, Cr, Ni, and Cu leads to a loss of ferromagnetic ground state. Our work enhances the understanding of the electronic and magnetic behavior of the 2D PTC-TM (transition metal) MOF family, and provides a promising avenue for engineering 2D magnetic MOF systems.

Optimizing post-synthetic metal incorporation in mixed-linker MOFs: insights from metalation studies on bipyridine-containing UiO-67 single crystals.

The postsynthetic metalation (PSM) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intrinsic metal binding sites is an intriguing strategy to introduce catalytic function into MOFs. The spatial distribution of the catalytic sites within the MOF crystal will affect the efficiency of the material, but the factors that govern depth distribution of the introduced metal sites are often not well understood. Herein, we employ Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) to investigate the metal distribution in a series of post-synthetically metalated mixed linker bpdc/BPY UiO-67 (UiO = Universitet i Oslo, bpdc = biphenyl-dicarboxylate, BPY = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate) single crystals as a function of linker ratio and metalation time. The RBS spectra reveal large differences in the depth distribution of inserted Ni2+ ions, and core/shell architectures are observed in high BPY materials at shorter incubation times. The incubation times to achieve uniform metal incorporation increases with increasing BPY ratios in the materials, suggesting that the presence of the BPY linkers slow down metal uptake. We propose a combination of ionic interactions and pore clogging, where coordinated ions reduce the available pore space for further ions to diffuse deeper into the framework as reasons for the observed trends. The observations are likely relevant for other mixed-linker MOF systems, and understanding the effect that linker ratios have on PSM and cation distribution will aid in future optimizations of catalytic MOFs.

Realizing altermagnetism in two-dimensional metal-organic framework semiconductors with electric-field-controlled anisotropic spin current.

Altermagnets exhibit momentum-dependent spin-splitting in a collinear antiferromagnetic order due to their peculiar crystallographic and magnetic symmetry, resulting in the creation of spin currents with light elements. Here, we report two two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) semiconductors, M(pyz)2 (M = Ca and Sr, pyz = pyrazine), which exhibit both altermagnetism and topological nodal point and line by using first-principles calculations and group theory. The altermagnetic 2D MOFs exhibit unconventional spin-splitting and macroscopic zero magnetization caused by 4-fold rotation in crystalline real space and 2-fold rotation in spin space, leading to the generation and control of anisotropic spin currents when an in-plane electric field ( E ) is applied. In particular, pure spin current with the spin Hall effect occurs when E is applied along the angular bisector of the two spin arrangements. Our work indicates the existence of altermagnetic MOF systems and a universal approach to generate electric-field-controlled spin currents for potential applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

PolyMOF nanoparticles constructed from intrinsically microporous polymer ligand towards scalable composite membranes for CO2 separation

Integrating different modification strategies into a single step to achieve the desired properties of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been very synthetically challenging, especially in developing advanced MOF/polymer mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Herein, we report a polymer–MOF (polyMOF) system constructed from a carboxylated polymer with intrinsic microporosity (cPIM-1) ligand. This intrinsically microporous ligand could coordinate with metals, leading to ~100 nm-sized polyMOF nanoparticles. Compared to control MOFs, these polyMOFs exhibit enhanced ultramicroporosity for efficient molecular sieving, and they have better dispersion properties in casting solutions to prepare MMMs. Ultimately, integrating coordination chemistries through the cPIM-1 and polymer-based functionality into porous materials results in polyMOF/PIM-1 MMMs that display excellent CO2 separation performance (surpassing the CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 upper bounds). In addition to exploring the physicochemical and transport properties of this polyMOF system, scalability has been demonstrated by converting the developed MMM material into large-area (400 cm2) thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes.

A Novel Endoplasmic Reticulum-Targeted Metal-Organic Framework-Confined Ruthenium (Ru) Nanozyme Regulation of Oxidative Stress for Central Post-Stroke Pain.

Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a chronic neuropathic pain caused by cerebrovascular lesion or disfunction after stroke. Convincing evidence suggest that excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) and neuroinflammation are largely involved in the development of pain. In this study, an effective strategy is reported for treating pain hypersensitivity using an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-targeted metal-organic framework (MOF)-confined ruthenium (Ru) nanozyme. The Ru MOF is coated with a p-dodecylbenzene sulfonamide (p-DBSN) modified liposome with endoplasmic reticulum-targeted function. The experimental results reveals that ROS, Emmprin, MMP-2, and MMP-9 are upregulated in the brain of CPSP mice, along with the elevated expression of inflammation markers such as TNF-α and IL-6. Compared to vehicle, one-time intravenous administration of ER-Ru MOF significantly reduces mechanical hypersensitivity after CPSP for three days. Overall, ER-Ru MOF system can inhibit oxidative stress in the brain tissues of CPSP model, reduce MMPs expression, and suppress neuroinflammation response-induced injury, resulting in satisfactory prevention and effective treatment of CPSP during a hemorrhagic stroke. The ER-Ru MOF is expected to be useful for the treatment of neurological diseases associated with the vicious activation of ROS, based on the generality of the approach used in this study.

Appearance of a Photoinduced Hidden State in the Electron Donor–Acceptor Type Metal–Organic Framework (NPr4)2[Fe2(Cl2An)3

AbstractElectron donor–acceptor (DA)‐type metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with valence instability are promising molecular materials for the design of photo‐responsive and electronic/magnetic functional materials. Here, ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in a DA‐type layered MOF that exhibits a charge‐transfer (CT)‐type phase transition are reported: (NPr4)2[Fe2(Cl2An)3], where NPr4+ = tetra‐n‐propylammonium and Cl2An2− = 2,5‐dichloro‐3,6‐dihydroxo‐1,4‐benzoquinonate. At room temperature (300 K: RT), ultrafast photoinduced CT between the Fe and Cl2An ions induces a sensitive change in the state associated with the valence instability from a single‐chain, electron‐correlated state to a new photoinduced, structurally modulated state. In the photoinduced state, two absorption bands are observed, one on the higher‐energy side of the CT band and the other in the mid‐IR range. This strongly implies that the local inversion center on the Cl2An ion that exists in the initial state disappears instantly upon photoexcitation, causing an ultrafast change in the lattice structure due to the softening of rigid bonds. This has never been realized in thermal excitation. These findings demonstrate that a new electronic state with a unique lattice structure—i.e., a photoinduced hidden state—appears in this MOF system at ultra‐high speed (within 110 fs) upon photoexcitation at RT.

Polydopamine-cloaked Fe-based metal organic frameworks enable synergistic multidimensional treatment of osteosarcoma

One of the major challenges in effective cancer therapy arises because of the hypoxic microenvironment in the tumor. This compromises the efficacy of both chemo- and radiotherapy, and thus hinders patient outcomes. To solve this problem, we constructed polydopamine (PDA)-cloaked Fe-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) loaded with d-arginine (d-Arg), glucose oxidase (GOX), and the chemotherapeutic drug tirapazamine (TPZ). These offer simultaneous multifaceted therapy combining chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/radiotherapy (RT)/starvation therapy (ST)/gas therapy (GT) and chemotherapy. The particles further can act as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging. GOX catalyses the conversion of endogenous glucose and O2 to hydrogen peroxide and gluconic acid, blocking the cells’ energy supply and providing ST. With the resultant acidification of the local environment, the breakdown of the MOF releases TPZ (for chemotherapy) and Fe3+, which reacts with H2O2 to produce reactive oxygen species and thus stimulates the conversion of d-Arg to NO for GT and RT sensitization. The PDA coating not only seals the pores and chelates Fe3+ to enhance the T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties, but also is used to graft folate bovine serum albumin (FA-BSA) and thereby target the tumor site. The combined administration of low doses of X-ray irradiation and nanoparticles reduces the side effects on healthy tissue and can prevent lung metastases in mice. This work highlights the synergistic treatment of osteosarcoma via ST/GT/CDT/RT/MRI/ chemotherapy using a PDA-cloaked MOF system.

Defect Engineering of Low-Coordinated Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Improved CO2 Access and Capture.

While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising gas adsorbents, their tortuous microporous structures cause additional resistance for gas diffusion, thus hindering the accessibility of interior active sites. Here, we present a practical strategy to incorporate missing cluster defects into a representative low-coordinated MOFs structure, Mg-MOF-74, while maintaining the stability of a defect-rich structure. In this proposed method, graphene oxide (GO) is employed as modulator, and crystallization time is varied to promote defect formation by altering the nucleation and crystal growth processes. The best performing GO-modified Mg-MOF-74 sample (MOF@GO 40 h) achieved 18% and 15% improvement in surface area and total pore volume, respectively, over pristine Mg-MOF-74. The reduced diffusion resistance to gas flow translates to increased accessibility for gas molecules to active Mg adsorption sites inside the MOFs, leading to enhanced CO2 capture performance; the CO2 uptake quantity of MOF@GO 40 h arrives at 6.06 mmol/g at 0.1 bar and at 9.17 mmol/g at 1 bar and 25 °C, 19.29% and 16.37% higher, respectively, than that of the pristine Mg-MOF-74, with a CO2/N2 selectivity around 17.36% greater than that of pristine Mg-MOF-74. Our study demonstrates a facile approach for incorporating defects into MOFs systems with low coordination environments, thus expanding the library of defect-rich MOFs beyond the current highly coordinated MOF systems.

Water Harvesting at the Single-Crystal Level.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a class of porous materials with facile uptake and release of water, turning them into excellent substrates for real-world atmospheric water harvesting applications. The performance of different MOF systems was experimentally characterized at the bulk level by assessing the total amount of water taken up and the release kinetics, leaving the question behind of what the upper limit of the pristine materials actually is. Moreover, recent devices rely on fluidized bed reactors that exploit the harvesting capacities of MOFs at the single-crystal (SC) level. In this publication, we present a novel methodology based on Raman spectroscopy, for acquiring water adsorption isotherms and kinetic curves with a sub-micrometer resolution that provides valuable insights into the material behavior probing the pristine MOF at the SC level. We investigated isolated MOF-801 particles in situ and could dissect contributions of intra- and inter-particle effects on the water harvesting performance of MOF-801 via adsorption-desorption isotherms and kinetic curves. Using spontaneous Raman spectroscopy, we found an almost 20-fold faster uptake for the undisturbed crystalline material. Correlative imaging based on four-wave mixing and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering further localized the uptaken water inside MOF-801 and identified inter-particle condensation as the main source for the discrepancies between the performance at the bulk and SC level. Our studies determined an upper limit of around 91.9 L/kgMOF/day for MOF-801.

Sodium-alginate-laden MXene and MOF systems and their composite hydrogel beads for batch and fixed-bed adsorption of naproxen with electrochemical regeneration

Sodium alginate (SA)-laden two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene (MX) and MIL-101(Fe) (a type of metal–organic framework (MOF)) composites were prepared and used for the removal of naproxen (NPX), following the adsorption and electrochemical regeneration processes. The fixed-bed adsorption column studies were also conducted to study the process of removal of NPX by hydrogels. The number of interactions via which the MX-embedded SA (MX@SA) could adsorb NPX was higher than the number of pathways associated with NPX adsorption on the MIL-101(Fe)-embedded SA (MIL-101(Fe)@SA), and the MX and MIL-101(Fe) composite embedded SA (MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA). The optimum parameters for the electrochemical regeneration process were determined: charge passed and current density values were 169.3 C g−1 and 10 mA cm−2, respectively, for MX@SA, and the charge passed and current density values were 16.7 C g−1 and 5 mA cm−2, respectively, for both MIL-101(Fe)@SA and MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA. These parameters enabled excellent regeneration, consistent over multiple adsorption and electrochemical regeneration cycles. The mechanism for the regeneration of the materials was proposed that the regeneration of MX@SA and MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect electrooxidation process in the presence of OH radicals, and the regeneration of MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect oxidation process in the presence of active chlorine species.
