Stellar Variability and Distance Indicators in the Near-infrared in Nearby Galaxies. I. RR Lyrae and Anomalous Cepheids in Draco Dwarf Spheroidal

The Draco Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy is one of the nearest and the most dark-matter-dominated satellites of the Milky Way. We obtained multiepoch near-infrared (NIR, JHK s ) observations of the central region of Draco dSph covering a sky area of ∼21′ × 21′ using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6 m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Homogeneous JHK s time-series photometry for 212 RR Lyrae (173 fundamental-mode, 24 first-overtone, and 15 mixed-mode variables) and five Anomalous Cepheids in Draco dSph are presented and used to derive their period–luminosity relations at NIR wavelengths for the first-time. The small scatter of ∼0.05 mag in these empirical relations for RR Lyrae stars is consistent with those in globular clusters and suggests a very small metallicity spread, up to ∼0.2 dex, among these centrally located variables. Based on empirically calibrated NIR period–luminosity–metallicity relations for RR Lyrae in globular clusters, we determined a distance modulus to Draco dSph of μ RRL = 19.557 ± 0.026 mag. The calibrated K s -band period–luminosity relations for Anomalous Cepheids in the Draco dSph and the Large Magellanic Cloud exhibit statistically consistent slopes but systematically different zero points, hinting at possible metallicity dependence of ∼ − 0.3 mag dex−1. Finally, the apparent magnitudes of the tip of the red-giant branch in I and J bands also agree well with their absolute calibrations with the adopted RR Lyrae distance to Draco. Our recommended ∼1.5% precise RR Lyrae distance, D Draco = 81.55 ± 0.98(statistical) ± 1.17(systematic) kpc, is the most accurate and precise distance to Draco dSph galaxy.

New Near-infrared Period–Luminosity–Metallicity Relations for Galactic RR Lyrae Stars Based on Gaia EDR3 Parallaxes

We present new period–luminosity and period–luminosity–metallicity relations for Galactic RR Lyrae stars based on a sample of 28 pulsators located at distances of up to 1.5 kpc from the Sun. Near-infrared photometry was obtained at the Cerro Armazones Observatory, and parallaxes were taken from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. Relations were determined for the 2MASS JHK s bands and the W JK Wesenheit index. We compare our results with other calibrations available in the literature and obtain very good agreement with the photometry of RR Lyraes from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) anchored using the distance to the Cloud, which is based on detached eclipsing binaries. We find that the dependence of absolute magnitudes on metallicity of 0.070 ± 0.042 (J band) to 0.087 ± 0.031 (W JK index) mag dex−1 for the population of fundamental pulsators (RRab) is in agreement with previously published phenomenological works. We perform a refined determination of distance to the LMC based on our new calibration and photometry from Szewczyk et al. We study the dependence of the fitted parameters of the fiducial relations and the LMC distance on the systematic parallax offset.

Devouring the Milky Way Satellites: Modeling Dwarf Galaxies with Galacticus

Dwarf galaxies are ubiquitous throughout the universe and are extremely sensitive to various forms of internal and external feedback. Over the last two decades, the census of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and beyond has increased markedly. While hydrodynamic simulations (e.g., FIRE II, Mint Justice League) have reproduced the observed dwarf properties down to the ultrafaints, such simulations require extensive computational resources to run. In this work, we constrain the standard physical implementations in the semianalytic model Galacticus to reproduce the observed properties of the Milky Way satellites down to the ultrafaint dwarfs found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We run Galacticus on merger trees from our high-resolution N–body simulation of a Milky Way analog. We determine the best-fit parameters by matching the cumulative luminosity function and luminosity–metallicity relation from both observations and hydrodynamic simulations. With the correct parameters, the standard physics in Galacticus can reproduce the observed luminosity function and luminosity–metallicity relation of the Milky Way dwarfs. In addition, we find a multidimensional match with half-light radii, velocity dispersions, and mass to light ratios at z = 0 down to M V ≤ −6 (L ≥ 104 L ⊙). In addition to successfully reproducing the properties of the z = 0 Milky Way satellite population, our modeled dwarfs have star formation histories that are consistent with those of the Local Group dwarfs.

Oxygen abundances in the narrow line regions of Seyfert galaxies and the metallicity–luminosity relation

ABSTRACT We present oxygen abundances relative to hydrogen (O/H) in the narrow line regions (NLRs) gas phases of Seyferts 1 (Sy 1s) and Seyferts 2 (Sy 2s) active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We used fluxes of the optical narrow emission line intensities [$3\, 500\lt \lambda ($Å$)\lt 7\, 000$] of 561 Seyfert nuclei in the local Universe ( z ≲ 0.31) from the second catalogue and data release (DR2) of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey, which focuses on the Swift-BAT hard X-ray (≳ 10 keV) detected AGNs. We derived O/H from relative intensities of the emission lines via the strong-line methods. We find that the AGN O/H abundances are related to their hosts stellar masses and that they follow a downward redshift evolution. The derived O/H together with the hard X-ray luminosity (LX) were used to study the X-ray luminosity–metallicity (LX–ZNLR) relation for the first time in Seyfert galaxies. In contrast to the broad-line focused (LX–ZBLR) studies, we find that the LX–ZNLR exhibit significant anticorrelations with the Eddington ratio (λEdd) and these correlations vary with redshifts. This result indicates that the low-luminous AGNs are more actively undergoing interstellar medium enrichment through star formation in comparison with the more luminous X-ray sources. Our results suggest that the AGN is somehow driving the galaxy chemical enrichment, as a result of the inflow of pristine gas that is diluting the metal rich gas, together with a recent cessation on the circumnuclear star-formation.

How much metal did the first stars provide to the ultra-faint dwarfs?

Numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies have so far failed to reproduce the observed metallicity-luminosity relation, down to the regime of ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs). We address this issue by exploring how the first generations of metal-free stars (Pop III) could help increase the mean metallicity ([Fe/H]) of those small and faint galaxies. We ran zoom-in chemo-dynamical simulations of 19 halos extracted from a Λ Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmological box and followed their evolution down to redshiftz = 0. Models were validated not only on the basis of galaxy global properties, but also on the detailed investigation of the stellar abundance ratios ([α/Fe]). We identified the necessary conditions for the formation of the first stars in mini-halos and derived constraints on the metal ejection schemes. The impact of Pop III stars on the final metallicity of UFDs was evaluated by considering different stellar mass ranges for their initial mass function (IMF), the influence of pair-instability supernovae (PISNe), and their energetic feedback, as well as the metallicity threshold that marks the transition from the first massive stars to the formation of low-mass long-lived stars. The inclusion of Pop III stars with masses below 140 M⊙, and a standard IMF slope of −1.3 does increase the global metallicity of UFDs, although these are insufficient to resolve the tension with observations. The PISNe with progenitor masses above 140 M⊙do allow the metal content of UFDs to further increase. However, as PISNe are very rare and sometimes absent in the faintest UFDs, they have a limited impact on the global faint end of the metallicity-luminosity relation. Despite a limited number of spectroscopically confirmed members in UFDs, which make the stellar metallicity distribution of some UFDs uncertain, our analysis reveals that this is essentially the metal-rich tail that is missing in the models. The remaining challenges are thus both observational and numerical: (i) to extend high-resolution spectroscopy data samples and confirm the mean metallicity of the faintest UFDs; and (ii) to explain the presence of chemically enriched stars in galaxies with very short star formation histories.

Impact of the Gaia ESA mission on the primary Period–Luminosity Calibrators in the Milky Way: Cepheids and RR Lyrae

AbstractWe discuss the impact of Gaia, the cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), on the calibration of the period–luminosity and luminosity–metallicity relations of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, with specific reference to data published as part of the most recent Gaia releases: Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), on 19 December 2020, and Data Release 3 (DR3) on 13 June 2022. We provide future perspectives for the Gaia mission, including extensions approved by ESA and a tentative schedule of the data releases that will take place in the next few years. We briefly present plans for cross-Coordination Unit processing of Gaia data of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars for DR4 and conclude by outlining the expected improvement in astrometry at the end of the extended Gaia mission, which will help to further strengthen the calibration of the first rung of the cosmic distance ladder.

Period–Luminosity–Metallicity relations for Classical Pulsators at Near-infrared Wavelengths

AbstractClassical pulsating stars such as Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables exhibit well-defined Period–Luminosity relations at near-infrared wavelengths. Despite their extensive use as stellar standard candles, the effects of metallicity on Period–Luminosity relations for these pulsating variables, and in turn, on possible biases in distance determinations, are not well understood. We present ongoing efforts in determining accurate and precise metallicity coefficients of Period–Luminosity-Metallicity relations for classical pulsators at near-infrared wavelengths. For Cepheids, it is crucial to obtain a homogeneous sample of photometric light curves and high-resolution spectra for a wide range of metallicities to empirically determine metallicity coefficient and reconcile differences with the predictions of the theoretical models. For RR Lyrae variables, using their host globular clusters covering a wide range of metallicities, we determined the most precise metallicity coefficient at near-infrared wavelengths, which is in excellent agreement with the predictions of the horizontal branch evolution and stellar pulsation models.

RR Lyrae-based Distances for 39 Nearby Dwarf Galaxies Calibrated to Gaia eDR3

We provide uniform RR Lyrae-based distances to 39 dwarf galaxies in and around the Local Group. We determine distances based on a Bayesian hierarchical model that uses periods and magnitudes of published RR Lyrae in dwarf galaxies and is anchored to well-studied Milky Way (MW) RR Lyrae with spectroscopic metallicities and Gaia eDR3 parallaxes. Gaia eDR3 parallaxes for the anchor sample are a factor of 2, on average, more precise than DR2 parallaxes, and allow for a much better constrained period–luminosity–metallicity relation. While ∼75% of our distances are within 1σ of recent RR Lyrae distances in the literature, our distances are also ∼2–3 times more precise than distances in the literature, on average. On average, our distances are ∼0.05 mag closer than distances in the literature, as well as ∼0.06 mag closer than distances derived using a theoretical period–luminosity–metallicity relation. These discrepancies are largely due to our eDR3 parallax anchor. We show that the Hipparcos-anchored RR Lyrae distance scale of Carretta et al. overpredicts distances to MW RR Lyrae by ∼0.05 mag. The largest uncertainties in our distances are (i) the lack of direct metallicity measurements for RR Lyrae and (ii) the heterogeneity of published RR Lyrae photometry. We provide simple formulae to place new dwarf galaxies with RR Lyrae on a common distance scale with this work. We provide a public code that can easily incorporate additional galaxies and data from future surveys, providing a versatile framework for the cartography of the local universe with RR Lyrae.

RR Lyrae and Type II Cepheid Variables in Globular Clusters: Optical and Infrared Properties

Globular clusters are both primary fossils of galactic evolution and formation and are ideal laboratories for constraining the evolution of low-mass and metal-poor stars. RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid variables are low-mass, radially pulsating stars that trace old-age stellar populations. These stellar standard candles in globular clusters are crucial for measuring their precise distances and, in turn, absolute ages, and for the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. Herein, the evolutionary stages of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheids are discussed, and their pulsation properties, including the light curves, color–magnitude and period–amplitude diagrams, and period–luminosity relations in globular clusters at optical and infrared wavelengths are presented. The RR Lyrae visual magnitude–metallicity relation and the multiband period–luminosity–metallicity relations in globular clusters covering a wide metallicity range are also discussed in detail for their application to the RR Lyrae-based distance scale.

Precise distances from OGLE-IV member RR Lyrae stars in six bulge globular clusters

Context. RR Lyrae stars are useful standard candles allowing one to derive accurate distances for old star clusters. Based on the recent catalogues from OGLE-IV and Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), the distances can be improved for a few bulge globular clusters. Aims. The aim of this work is to derive an accurate distance for the following six moderately metal-poor, relatively high-reddening bulge globular clusters: NGC 6266, NGC 6441, NGC 6626, NGC 6638, NGC 6642, and NGC 6717. Methods. We combined newly available OGLE-IV catalogues of variable stars containing mean I magnitudes, with Clement’s previous catalogues containing mean V magnitudes, and with precise proper motions from Gaia EDR3. Astrometric membership probabilities were computed for each RR Lyrae, in order to select those compatible with the cluster proper motions. Applying luminosity–metallicity relations derived from BaSTI α-enhanced models (He-enhanced for NGC 6441 and canonical He for the other clusters), we updated the distances with relatively low uncertainties. Results. Distances were derived with the I and V bands, with a 5 − 8% precision. We obtained 6.6 kpc, 13.1 kpc, 5.6 kpc, 9.6 kpc, 8.2 kpc, and 7.3 kpc for NGC 6266, NGC 6441, NGC 6626, NGC 6638, NGC 6642, and NGC 6717, respectively. The results are in excellent agreement with the literature for all sample clusters, considering the uncertainties. Conclusions. The present method of distance derivation, based on recent data of member RR Lyrae stars, updated BaSTI models, and robust statistical methods, proved to be consistent. A larger sample of clusters will be investigated in a future work.

The Milky Way Revealed by Variable Stars. I. Sample Selection of RR Lyrae Stars and Evidence for Merger History

Abstract In order to study the Milky Way, RR Lyrae (RRL) variable stars identified by Gaia, ASAS-SN, and ZTF sky survey projects have been analyzed as tracers in this work. Photometric and spectroscopic information of 3417 RRLs including proper motions, radial velocity, and metallcity are obtained from observational data of Gaia, LAMOST, GALAH, APOGEE, and RAVE. Precise distances of RRLs with typical uncertainties less than 3% are derived by using a recent comprehensive period–luminosity–metallicity relation. Our results from kinematical and chemical analysis provide important clues for the assembly history of the Milky Way, especially for the Gaia–Sausage ancient merger. The kinematical and chemical trends found in this work are consistent with those of recent simulations that indicated that the Gaia–Sausage merger had a dual origin in the Galactic thick disk and halo. As recent similar works have found, the halo RRL sample in this work contains a subset of radially biased orbits besides a more isotropic component. This higher orbital anisotropy component amounts to β ≃ 0.8, and it contributes between 42% and 83% of the halo RRLs at 4 < R( kpc) < 20.

Optical and Near-infrared Pulsation Properties of RR Lyrae and Population II Cepheid Variables in the Messier 15 Globular Cluster

Abstract Messier 15 (NGC 7078) is an old and metal-poor post core-collapse globular cluster that hosts a rich population of variable stars. We report new optical (gi) and near-infrared (NIR, JK s ) multi-epoch observations for 129 RR Lyrae, 4 Population II Cepheids (3 BL Herculis, 1 W Virginis), and 1 anomalous Cepheid variable candidate in M15 obtained using the MegaCam and the WIRCam instruments on the 3.6 m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Multi-band data are used to improve the periods and classification of variable stars, and determine accurate mean magnitudes and pulsational amplitudes from the light curves fitted with optical and NIR templates. We derive optical and NIR period–luminosity relations for RR Lyrae stars which are best constrained in the K s band, m K s = − 2.333 ( 0.054 ) log P + 13.948 ( 0.015 ) with a scatter of only 0.037 mag. Theoretical and empirical calibrations of RR Lyrae period–luminosity–metallicity relations are used to derive a true distance modulus to M15: 15.196 ± 0.026 (statistical) ± 0.039 (systematic) mag. Our precise distance moduli based on RR Lyrae stars and Population II Cepheid variables are mutually consistent and agree with recent distance measurements in the literature based on Gaia parallaxes and other independent methods.

Kinematics of Antlia 2 and Crater 2 from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5)

Abstract We present new spectroscopic observations of the diffuse Milky Way satellite galaxies Antlia 2 and Crater 2, taken as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5). The new observations approximately double the number of confirmed member stars in each galaxy and more than double the spatial extent of spectroscopic observations in Antlia 2. A full kinematic analysis, including Gaia EDR3 proper motions, detects a clear velocity gradient in Antlia 2 and a tentative velocity gradient in Crater 2. The velocity gradient magnitudes and directions are consistent with particle stream simulations of tidal disruption. Furthermore, the orbit and kinematics of Antlia 2 require a model that includes the reflex motion of the Milky Way induced by the Large Magellanic Cloud. We also find that Antlia 2's metallicity was previously overestimated, so it lies on the empirical luminosity–metallicity relation and is likely only now experiencing substantial stellar mass loss. Current dynamical models of Antlia 2 require it to have lost over 90% of its stars to tides, in tension with the low stellar mass loss implied by the updated metallicity. Overall, the new kinematic measurements support a tidal disruption scenario for the origin of these large and extended dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

Variable stars in the VVV globular clusters

Context.The Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located in the inner regions of the Milky Way suffer from high extinction that makes their observation challenging. High densities of field stars in their surroundings complicate their study even more. The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey provides a way to explore these GGCs in the near-infrared where extinction effects are highly diminished.Aims.We conduct a search for variable stars in several inner GGCs, taking advantage of the unique multi-epoch, wide-field, near-infrared photometry provided by the VVV survey. We are especially interested in detecting classical pulsators that will help us constrain the physical parameters of these GGCs. In this paper, the second of a series, we focus on NGC 6656 (M 22), NGC 6626 (M 28), NGC 6569, and NGC 6441; these four massive GGCs have known variable sources, but quite different metallicities. We also revisit 2MASS-GC 02 and Terzan 10, the two GGCs studied in the first paper of this series.Methods.We present an improved method and a new parameter that efficiently identify variable candidates in the GGCs. We also use the proper motions of those detected variable candidates and their positions in the sky and in the color-magnitude diagrams to assign membership to the GGCs.Results.We identify and parametrize in the near-infrared numerous variable sources in the studied GGCs, cataloging tens of previously undetected variable stars. We recover many known classical pulsators in these clusters, including the vast majority of their fundamental mode RR Lyrae. We use these pulsators to obtain distances and extinctions toward these objects. Recalibrated period–luminosity–metallicity relations for the RR Lyrae bring the distances to these GGCs to a closer agreement with those reported byGaia, except for NGC 6441, which is an uncommon Oosterhoff III GGC. Recovered proper motions for these GGCs also agree with those reported byGaia, except for 2MASS-GC 02, the most reddened GGC in our sample, where the VVV near-infrared measurements provide a more accurate determination of its proper motions.

J2229+2725: an extremely low metallicity dwarf compact star-forming galaxy with an exceptionally high [O iii]λ5007/[O ii]λ3727 flux ratio of 53

ABSTRACT Using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)/Multi-Object Dual Spectrograph (MODS), we have obtained optical spectroscopy of one of the most metal-poor dwarf star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the local Universe, J2229+2725. This galaxy with a redshift z = 0.0762 was selected from the Data Release 16 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Its properties derived from the LBT observations are most extreme among SFGs in several ways. Its oxygen abundance 12 + logO/H = 7.085 ± 0.031 is among the lowest ever observed for an SFG. With its very low metallicity, an absolute magnitude Mg = −16.39 mag, a low stellar mass M⋆ = 9.1 × 106 M⊙, and a very low mass-to-light ratio M⋆/Lg ∼ 0.0166 (in solar units), J2229+2725 deviates strongly from the luminosity–metallicity relation defined by the bulk of the SFGs in the SDSS. J2229+2725 has a very high specific star formation rate sSFR ∼ 75 Gyr−1, indicating very active ongoing star formation. Three other features of J2229+2725 are most striking, being the most extreme among lowest metallicity SFGs: (1) a ratio O32 = I([O iii]λ5007)/I([O ii]λ3727) ∼ 53, (2) an equivalent width of the H β emission line EW(H β) of 577 Å, and (3) an electron number density of ∼1000 cm−3. These properties imply that the starburst in J2229+2725 is very young. Using the extremely high O32 in J2229+2725, we have improved the strong-line calibration for the determination of oxygen abundances in the most metal-deficient galaxies, in the range 12 + logO/H $\lesssim$ 7.3.

The properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Cen A group

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have been extensively investigated in the Local Group, but their low luminosity and surface brightness make similar work in more distant galaxy groups challenging. Modern instrumentation unlocks the possibility of scrutinizing these faint systems in other environments, expanding the parameter space of group properties. We use MUSE spectroscopy to study the properties of 14 known or suspected dSph satellites of Cen A. Twelve targets are confirmed to be group members based on their radial velocities. Two targets are background galaxies at ∼50 Mpc: KK 198 is a face-on spiral galaxy, and dw1315−45 is an ultra-diffuse galaxy with an effective radius of ∼2300 pc. The 12 confirmed dSph members of the Cen A group have old and metal-poor stellar populations and follow the stellar metallicity-luminosity relation defined by the dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. In the three brightest dwarf galaxies (KK 197, KKs 55, and KKs 58), we identify globular clusters, as well as a planetary nebula in KK 197, although its association with this galaxy and/or the extended halo of Cen A is uncertain. Using four discrete tracers, we measure the velocity dispersion and dynamical mass of KK 197. This dSph appears dark matter dominated and lies on the radial acceleration relation of star-forming galaxies within the uncertainties. It also is consistent with predictions stemming from modified Newtonian dynamics. Surprisingly, in the dwarf KK 203 we find an extended Hα ring. Careful examination of Hubble Space Telescope photometry reveals a very low level of star formation at ages between 30 and 300 Myr. The Hα emission is most likely linked to a ∼40 Myr old supernova remnant, although other possibilities for its origin cannot be entirely ruled out.

Near-infrared Census of RR Lyrae Variables in the Messier 3 Globular Cluster and the Period–Luminosity Relations

Abstract We present new near-infrared (NIR), JHK s , time-series observations of RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 3 (NGC 5272) globular cluster using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6 m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Our observations cover a sky area of ∼21′ × 21′ around the cluster center and provide an average of 20 epochs of homogeneous JHK s -band photometry. New homogeneous photometry is used to estimate robust mean magnitudes for 175 fundamental-mode (RRab), 47 overtone-mode (RRc), and 11 mixed-mode (RRd) variables. Our sample of 233 RR Lyrae variables is the largest thus far obtained in a single cluster with time-resolved, multiband NIR photometry. NIR-to-optical amplitude ratios for RR Lyrae in Messier 3 exhibit a systematic increase moving from RRc to short-period (P < 0.6 day) and long-period (P ≳ 0.6 day) RRab variables. We derive JHK s -band period–luminosity relations for RRab, RRc, and the combined sample of variables. Absolute calibrations based on the theoretically predicted period–luminosity–metallicity relations for RR Lyrae stars yield a distance modulus, mag, to Messier 3. When anchored to trigonometric parallaxes for nearby RR Lyrae stars from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gaia mission, our distance estimates are consistent with those resulting from the theoretical calibrations, albeit with relatively larger systematic uncertainties.

Period–luminosity–metallicity relation of classical Cepheids

Context. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the dependence on metallicity of their period–luminosity and period–Wesenheit (PL and PW) relations has deep consequences for the estimate of the Hubble constant (H0). Aims. We investigate the dependence on metal abundance ([Fe/H]) of the PL and PW relations for Galactic DCEPs. Methods. We combined proprietary and literature photometric and spectroscopic data, gathering a total sample of 413 Galactic DCEPs (372 fundamental mode, DCEP_F, and 41 first-overtone, DCEP_1O) and constructed new metallicity-dependent PL and PW relations in the near-infrared adopting the astrometry-based luminosity. Results. We find indications that the slopes of the PL(KS) and PW(J, KS) relations for Galactic DCEPs might depend on metallicity on the basis of the comparison with the Large Magellanic Cloud relationships. Therefore we used a generalized form of the PL and PW relations to simultaneously take the metallicity dependence of the slope and intercept of these relations into account. Conclusions. We calculated PL and PW relations that for the first time explicitly include a metallicity dependence of the slope and intercept terms. The quality of the available data is insufficient, however, and we cannot yet present conclusive results, but they are relevant from a methodological point of view. The new relations are linked to the geometric measurement of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and allowed us to estimate a Gaia DR2 parallax zero-point offset Δϖ = 0.0615 ± 0.004 mas from the dataset of DCEPs used in this work.

A fresh look at the RR Lyrae population in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy with Gaia

ABSTRACT We present a catalogue of 285 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in the Draco dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, obtained by combining data from a number of different surveys including the Data Release 2 (DR2) of the European Space Agency cornerstone mission Gaia. We have determined individual distances to the RRLs in our sample using for the first time a Gaia G-band luminosity–metallicity relation ($M_{G}\small{--}{\rm [Fe/H]}$) and study the structure of the Draco dSph as traced by its RRL population. We find that the RRLs located in the western/south-western region of Draco appear to be closer to us, which may be a clue of interaction between Draco and the Milky Way. The average distance modulus of Draco measured with the RRLs is $\mu =19.53\pm 0.07$ mag, corresponding to a distance of $80.5\pm 2.6$ kpc, in good agreement with previous determinations in the literature. Based on the pulsation properties of the RRLs, we confirm the Oosterhoff-intermediate nature of Draco. We present an additional sample of 41 candidate RRLs in Draco, which we selected from the Gaia DR2 catalogue based on the uncertainty of their G-band magnitudes. Additional epoch data that will become available in the Gaia Data Release 3 will help to confirm whether these candidates are bona fide Draco RRLs.

The Pristine Dwarf-Galaxy survey – II. In-depth observational study of the faint Milky Way satellite Sagittarius II

ABSTRACT We present an extensive study of the Sagittarius II (Sgr II) stellar system using MegaCam g and i photometry, narrow-band, metallicity-sensitive calcium H&K doublet photometry and Keck II/DEIMOS multiobject spectroscopy. We derive and refine the Sgr II structural and stellar properties inferred at the time of its discovery. The colour–magnitude diagram implies Sgr II is old (12.0 ± 0.5 Gyr) and metal poor. The CaHK photometry confirms the metal-poor nature of the satellite ([Fe/H] CaHK = −2.32 ± 0.04 dex) and suggests that Sgr II hosts more than one single stellar population ($\sigma _\mathrm{[FeH]}^\mathrm{CaHK} = 0.11^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$ dex). Using the Ca infrared triplet measured from our highest signal-to-noise spectra, we confirm the metallicity and dispersion inferred from the Pristine photometric metallicities ([Fe/H]spectro = −2.23 ± 0.05 dex, $\sigma _\mathrm{[Fe/H]}^\mathrm{spectro} = 0.10 ^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ dex). The velocity dispersion of the system is found to be $\sigma _{v} = 2.7^{+1.3}_{-1.0} {\rm \, km \,\, s^{-1}}$ after excluding two potential binary stars. Sgr II’s metallicity and absolute magnitude (MV = −5.7 ± 0.1 mag) place the system on the luminosity–metallicity relation of the Milky Way dwarf galaxies despite its small size. The low but resolved metallicity and velocity dispersions paint the picture of a slightly dark-matter-dominated satellite ($M/L = 23.0^{+32.8}_{-23.0}$ M⊙ L$^{-1}_{\odot }$). Furthermore, using the Gaia Data Release 2, we constrain the orbit of the satellite and find an apocentre of $118.4 ^{+28.4}_{-23.7} {\rm \, kpc}$ and a pericentre of $54.8 ^{+3.3}_{-6.1} {\rm \, kpc}$. The orbit of Sgr II is consistent with the trailing arm of the Sgr stream and indicates that it is possibly a satellite of the Sgr dSph that was tidally stripped from the dwarf’s influence.
