Saline based microfluidic soft pressure sensor utilizing a three-dimensional focused electric field for motion and healthcare monitoring

This paper introduces the ‘Spatially Focused Saline-based Pressure Sensor (SF-SaPS)', a novel soft microfluidic pressure sensor featuring a distinctive three-dimensional focusing structure. By critically reducing the cross-sectional area of the microchannel at the focused structure, the SF-SaPS achieves excellent sensitivity to pressure within the sensing region. With the spatially focused region, the SF-SaPS could detect a wide range of pressure from gentle touches to human weight, which is typically unachievable with low-conductivity sensing media such as saline, a medium inherently safe for human use. Beyond its sensitivity, the SF-SaPS exhibits sensing performance and stability comparable with conventional liquid metal-based pressure sensors. Our sensor demonstrated minimal signal drift, a rapid response time of 70 ms under cyclic loading, and 20-day long-term stability tests immersed in water. Additionally, the sensor possesses a transparency advantage unattainable by liquid metal sensors as we utilized transparent polymers and saline. A unique advantage of the SF-SaPS lies in its selective spatial and mechanical sensitivity; as the electrical resistance is highly dependent on changes in the cross-sectional area of the microchannels, the sensor has superior pressure sensitivity compared to bending and strain. Finally, various application examples highlight the SF-SaPS's advantages. By configuring the sensor in a two-axis array, the SF-SaPS facilitates pressure mapping across a plane. Additionally, it proves effective in healthcare monitoring, from radial pulse to finger movements. In conclusion, the SF-SaPS's combination of performance, stability, biocompatibility, and transparency positions this sensor as a versatile tool for applications extending beyond healthcare, as demonstrated in this study.

The chemistry of organotellurium ligands has improved rapidly during the last three decades. Because of their enhanced accessibility and the possibility that they would display significantly different properties than their sulfur counterparts, these ligands of heavier chalcogens have sparked considerable attention. The next sections will go through the various tellurium ligands and associated transition-metal complexes. Organochalcogen ligands are exceedingly flexible ligands that may react with nearly any transition metal to form a wide range of compounds, including multidentate ligands.Tellurides of various metals have lately been investigated for potential use in storage devices, solar cells, piezoelectric, medical applications, electronics, photothermal treatment, nanoplatelets, nanocrystals, catalysis, and other fields. Recording and Interpretation of Active Calcium Transients in Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes.

Calcium plays a pivotal role in the excitation-contraction coupling process in cardiomyocytes, a critical multi-parametric event leading to rhythmic contraction. Over the past few decades, calcium signaling in cardiomyocytes has been extensively studied in cardiovascular sciences. However, a standard methodology is needed not only to trace the calcium within cells but also to remove signal processing biases and to accurately interpret the features of calcium transient signals in relation to cardiomyocyte electrophysiology. This article outlines the use of genetically encoded calcium indicator (GCaMP) human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) to record calcium transients. These cells express a green fluorescent signal when calcium binds to intracellular calmodulin, a key regulator of calcium signaling. The extraction and processing of calcium transient waveforms are performed using ImageJ and MATLAB software. Key features of these waveforms are then identified and categorized based on their physiological relevance to cardiomyocyte function. Additionally, this work includes a Support Protocol for the successful replating of cardiomyocytes onto non-traditional culture platforms, such as metallic sensors and polymer-based substrates, to facilitate data multiplexing. The three Basic Protocols outlined here provide a comprehensive approach for maintaining, expanding, and differentiating the GCaMP hiPSCs, video recording of calcium transients, and the subsequent signal extraction, preprocessing, analysis, and data visualization. © 2024 The Author(s). Antenna-Coupled Magnetic Microbolometers for CMB Polarization Surveys

AbstractIn this work, we propose a magnetic bolometer to be employed in the search of primordial B-modes in the CMB. These magnetic bolometers are an adaptation of the well-known metallic magnetic calorimeters used in particle physics. They rely on the magnetization dependence on temperature of alloys such as Au:Er and Ag:Er. In addition to the low intrinsic noise a magnetic bolometer of this nature offers, the broad and smooth temperature-dependent magnetization of metallic magnetic sensors ultimately translates to a high dynamic range and straightforward calibration. Their intrinsic noise equivalent power (NEP) is estimated to be in the range of 10–100 aW/$$\sqrt{(}\text {Hz})$$ ( Hz ) . We outline here a workable design for such a detector utilizing an antenna-coupled approach and present the simulated power transfer ratio that was attained; the detector’s performance is discussed by combining this result with its responsivity.

Enhancing Heavy Metal Detection through Electrochemical Polishing of Carbon Electrodes.

Our research addresses the pressing need for environmental sensors capable of large-scale, on-site detection of a wide array of heavy metals with highly accurate sensor metrics. We present a novel approach using electrochemically polished (ECP) carbon screen-printed electrodes (cSPEs) for high-sensitivity detection of cadmium and lead. By applying a range of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, we investigated the impact of the electrochemical potential scan range, scan rate, and the number of cycles on electrode response and its ability to detect cadmium and lead. Our findings reveal a 41 ± 1.2% increase in voltammogram currents and a 51 ± 1.6% decrease in potential separations (n = 3), indicating a significantly improved active electrode area and kinetics. The impedance model elucidates the microstructural and electrochemical property changes in the ECP-treated electrodes, showing an 88 ± 2% (n = 3) decrease in the charge transfer resistance, leading to enhanced electrode electrical conductivity. A bismuth-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite-modified, ECP-treated electrode demonstrated a higher cadmium and lead sensitivity of up to 5 ± 0.1 μAppb-1cm-2 and 2.7 ± 0.1 μAppb-1cm-2 (n = 3), respectively, resulting in sub-ppb limits of detection in spiked deionized water samples. Our study underscores the potential of optimally ECP-activated electrodes as a foundation for designing ultrasensitive heavy metal sensors for a wide range of real-world heavy metal-contaminated waters.

Ultra-stretchable triboelectric touch pad with sandpaper micro-surfaces for Transformer-assisted gesture recognition

Touch pad based on triboelectric nanogenerator are attracting attention in the field of wearable electronics and human-machine interaction. However, it is still a challenge to realize touch pads combining large-area metamorphic stretchability, high power triboelectric sensing, intelligent free-sliding recognition and availability in extreme environments. Here, we fabricate an ultra-stretchable triboelectric touch pad by integrating liquid metal and high performance hydrogel-based triboelectric sensor arrays, which achieves Transformer-assisted gesture recognition for drone flight direction control. The internal hydrogel electrode has great stretchability, electrical conductivity and anti-freeze properties. Encapsulated in Ecoflex with sandpaper micro-surfaces, it endows high triboelectric power density and pressure sensitivity. With screen-printed liquid metal, the integrated touch pad is fully ultra-stretchable and large-area strain stability. Combining Internet of Things, we build a Transformer-assisted human machine interface. Notably, slide gesture signal peak deviation is reduced by integral processing. The random free-sliding gesture signals are parsed by the Transformer algorithm with 96.83 % accuracy. Multi-threaded signal processing improves the response speed and throughput of the system. The accurate real-time gesture recognition for drone flight direction control in extreme environment is realized. This human machine interface can facilitate development of next generation intelligent remote interactive platforms.

Implementation of the SN04 Roko metal sensor on a 5.56 mm caliber portable magazine feeder

Roko SN04 Metal Sensor technology and equipment are evolving and growing more advanced with time. One type of equipment that needs to consider both the user's safety and the equipment's development and safety is technological equipment used in the military. The soldiers can shoot and do so with skill. As a result, soldiers must be able to move swiftly against the enemy and vigilant when utilizing combat equipment to ensure that it is used correctly and for its intended purpose. Nevertheless, there are still several fighting tools in the military that require a lot of physical labor, making them exceedingly inefficient for the user. One such tool is the portable magazine for 5.56-millimeter ammunition. This study employed the 4D methodology, which stands for Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Development research is a part of this methodology. A device for loading magazines has been created to make it easier for soldiers to move in situations where loading bullets by hand is still risky and impractical. The Roko SN04 sensor is used in the construction of this tool. One sensor that can be used as a metal detector is the Roko SN04. This magazine refill gadget uses a DC motor as a mechanic and an Arduino as a control to randomly arrange ammunition. This study's success rate was 96.67%

First-Principles Insights into Highly Sensitive and Reusable MoS2 Monolayers for Heavy Metal Detection.

This study explores the potential of MoS2 monolayers as heavy metal sensors for As, Cd, Hg, and Pb using density functional theory (DFT) and Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) simulations. Our findings reveal that As and Pb adsorption significantly alters the surface structure and electronic properties of MoS2, introducing impurity levels and reducing the band gap. Conversely, Cd and Hg exhibit weaker interactions with the MoS2 surface. The MoS2 monolayer sensors demonstrate exceptional sensitivity for all four target heavy metals, with values reaching 126,452.28% for As, 1862.67% for Cd, 427.71% for Hg, and 83,438.90% for Pb. Additionally, the sensors demonstrate selectivity for As and Pb through distinct response peaks at specific bias voltages. As and Pb adsorption also induces magnetism in the MoS2 system, potentially enabling magnetic sensing applications. The MoS2 monolayer's moderate adsorption energy facilitates rapid sensor recovery at room temperature for As, Hg, and Cd. Notably, Pb recovery time can be significantly reduced at elevated temperatures, highlighting the reusability of the sensor. These results underscore the potential of MoS2 monolayers as highly sensitive, selective, and regenerable sensors for real-time heavy metal detection.

Silver nanoparticles from orange peel extract: Colorimetric detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions with a chemometric approach

Green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@OPE) were obtained by using orange (citrus sinensis) peel water extract (OPE) that acts as a reducing and capping agent. This procedure permits the valorisation of waste as orange peel, and lowers the environmental impact of the process, with respect to the conventional synthetic procedure. The OPE extract reduced Ag(I) to Ag(0) in alkaline conditions, and stabilised the produced nanoparticles as a capping agent. The AgNPs@OPE were deeply characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM analysis and DLS analysis and successively used as colorimetric sensors for different metals in aqueous solution. The colourimetric assay showed that AgNPs@OPE were able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+, as demonstrated by the splits of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band accompanied by the formation of a second new band; these spectral modification resulted in a colour change, from pristine nanoparticles’ yellow to brown, due to the aggregation process. For the quantification of each of the two target cations, a calibration was performed by using the univariate linear regression, within the linearity ranges, exploiting the absorbance ratio between the main SPR band and the new band relative to the aggregate formation. Then a multivariate approach was followed to perform both Cd2+ and Pb2+ quantification by means of Partial Least Square regression (PLS) and target cations distinction by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) applied on Principal Components Analysis (PCA) outputs, in both cases using the entire UV–Vis spectra (350–800 nm) as input data. Finally, the ability to quantify and distinguish between Cd2+ and Pb2+ was tested in tap water samples spiked with the two cations in order to confirm the application of the AgNPs@OPE as selective sensor in real samples.

Femtosecond laser direct writing wedge metallic microcavities for terahertz sensing

Metallic resonators allow the manipulation of electromagnetic fields in subwavelength volumes for strong light-matter interaction, underpinning emerging flat-optics devices. Metamaterials designed with optimized effective mode volume (Veff) for stimulating and maximizing the utilization of high-density photons are highly desirable for sensing applications. Here, we demonstrate a bowtie-type terahertz (THz) metallic aperture metamaterial structure with low Veff for enhanced biosensing. The device leverages the inherent characteristic of the femtosecond laser fabrication process enabling wedge cavities down to 3 µm by tailoring the pulse energy, whose sensing performance is superior to trapezoidal ones. Such a substrate-free, microcavity metallic metamaterial sensor with extremely strong interactions achieves an experimentally normalized sensitivity of 0.654 RIU−1, and demonstrates the detection of L-proline down to 0.87 nmol. These findings provide new insights into the design and optimization of efficient THz metamaterials with tightly confined fields for ultrasensitive biomolecular detection.

Strain sensor on a chip for quantifying the magnitudes of tensile stress on cells

During cardiac development, mechanotransduction from the in vivo microenvironment modulates cardiomyocyte growth in terms of the number, area, and arrangement heterogeneity. However, the response of cells to different degrees of mechanical stimuli is unclear. Organ-on-a-chip, as a platform for investigating mechanical stress stimuli in cellular mimicry of the in vivo microenvironment, is limited by the lack of ability to accurately quantify externally induced stimuli. However, previous technology lacks the integration of external stimuli and feedback sensors in microfluidic platforms to obtain and apply precise amounts of external stimuli. Here, we designed a cell stretching platform with an in-situ sensor. The in-situ liquid metal sensors can accurately measure the mechanical stimulation caused by the deformation of the vacuum cavity exerted on cells. The platform was applied to human cardiomyocytes (AC16) under cyclic strain (5%, 10%, 15%, 20 and 25%), and we found that cyclic strain promoted cell growth induced the arrangement of cells on the membrane to gradually unify, and stabilized the cells at 15% amplitude, which was even more effective after 3 days of culture. The platform’s precise control and measurement of mechanical forces can be used to establish more accurate in vitro microenvironmental models for disease modeling and therapeutic research.

Development of Highly Flexible Piezoelectric PVDF-TRFE/Reduced Graphene Oxide Doped Electrospun Nano-Fibers for Self-Powered Pressure Sensor.

The demand for self-powered, flexible, and wearable electronic devices has been increasing in recent years for physiological and biomedical applications in real-time detection due to their higher flexibility and stretchability. This work fabricated a highly sensitive, self-powered wearable microdevice with Poly-Vinylidene Fluoride-Tetra Fluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) nano-fibers using an electrospinning technique. The dielectric response of the polymer was improved by incorporating the reduced-graphene-oxide (rGO) multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) through doping. The dielectric behavior and piezoelectric effect were improved through the stretching and orientation of polymeric chains. The outermost layer was attained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of conductive polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) to enhance the electrical conductivity and sensitivity. The hetero-structured nano-composite comprises PVDF-TrFE doped with rGO-MWCNTs over poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), forming continuous self-assembly. The piezoelectric pressure sensor is capable of detecting human physiological vital signs. The pressure sensor exhibits a high-pressure sensitivity of 19.09 kPa-1, over a sensing range of 1.0 Pa to 25 kPa, and excellent cycling stability of 10,000 cycles. The study reveals that the piezoelectric pressure sensor has superior sensing performance and is capable of monitoring human vital signs, including heartbeat and wrist pulse, masticatory movement, voice recognition, and eye blinking signals. The research work demonstrates that the device could potentially eliminate metallic sensors and be used for early disease diagnosis in biomedical and personal healthcare applications.

Two dimensional alkaline earth metal sensors (2D-AEMS) of fluorescent strontium sulfide nanosheets for neurotransmitter drug detection via photo induced electron transfer (PIET)

A new sensing platform has been introduced that provides a powerful solution for fluorescence-based biosensors using photoluminescent nanosheets (NS) using the novel two dimensional alkaline earth metal sensors (2D-AEMS). We have synthesized two-dimensional (2D) fluorescent strontium sulfide (SrS) NS using deep eutectic solvent (DES) as green solvent media by a hydrothermal method. The resulting product of 2D SrS NS to enhance the fluorescence intensity was achieved successfully followed by probe ultrasonication. The optical properties of SrS NS were studied by UV–visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The 2D SrS NS showed a blueish-green fluorescence optimized at λex320 nm/λem390 nm and a quantum yield of 38.6% was calculated. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescent SrS NS effectively detected noradrenaline (NA) by PIET-based fluorescence quenching and wavelength shifts were observed. Our proposed 2D-AEMS of 2D SrS NS fluorescence intensity was quenched in a wide linear range from 1 to 300 µM, with a limit of detection (LOD = 3*3SD/S) of 0.047 µM. The 2D-AEMS (fluorescent SrS NS) was applied to the determination of NA in human urine samples, with good recovery ranging from 98.7-100.08%. Also, the SrS NS fluorescence quenching mechanism in the detection of NA was investigated by zeta potential analysis, UV analysis, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Our proposed 2D SrS NS fluorescence nanomaterials stand as an innovative platform for generating fluorescence sensors, with extensive potential applications in medical, biological, and life science fields, designed to replace traditional dye fluorescence in the near future.

CuxO nanoparticles loaded LTA zeolite as non-enzymatic and noble-metal-free sensing platform for accurate and fast glucose detection

For glucose sensors, improved sensitivity, accuracy, stability and convenience have always been desired. A novel sensing platform combining CuxO (x = 1, 2) nanoparticles and LTA-structured zeolite well fulfills these requirements and achieves breakthrough sensing concentration (6.0 × 10−15 M). In hydrothermal conditions, highly dispersed CuxO nanoparticles are formed and restrined in the nano-opening windows of the zeolite surface pores, ultimately yielding CuxO LTA. These in situ-synthesized CuxO NPs have high catalytic activity, while the zeolite provides a stable and rigid framework. This sensor has good selectivity and sensitivity (1.45 μA μM−1 cm−2) for the determination of glucose under physiological conditions (pH = 7.4) using the DPV method with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 6.0 × 10−15 M. The amperometry method exhibited a fast response time of only 0.1 s under strong alkaline conditions (1.0 M NaOH) and achieved a sensitivity of 6.94 μA μM−1 cm−2 and LOD of 2.0 × 10−9 M. This advanced hybrid sensor system not only provides a wide range of application environments, but also has important implications for the development of low-cost, stable, fast, and efficient non-enzymatic glucose sensors for noble metals. The theoretical support of density-functional theory (DFT) affirms the interaction between zeolite fine structure and glucose molecules.

Electrochemiluminescence Systems for Metal‐Ion Detection: A Systematic Review

AbstractElectrogenerated chemiluminescence or electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a chemiluminescence phenomenon generated by electrochemical reactions. Applying this phenomenon for metal ions detections is potentially effectual as it provides excellent selectivity and sensitivity as well as the ease of use and economical cost. Accordingly, the detection methods of many trace metals have been successfully developed by employing ECL systems, including Hg(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Fe(III), Ag(I), Co(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Ni(II), and As(III). There are several key components required to comprise the ECL systems, including luminophores that emit light and are directly proportionate toward metal concentrations, co‐reactants that increase the number of excited luminophores, and electrodes where the electron transfer occurs. Some new ECL systems comprising luminophores, co‐reactants, and electrodes have been developed to achieve impressive measurement results with low detection limits. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive illustration concerning the development of ECL‐based metal sensors, to elucidate a development overview of key elements employed in ECL systems and their modifications, explaining the different types of interactions due to the presence of metal ions in ECL systems, as well as to discuss the future opportunities and challenges of the ECL systems.

Over the past five decades, robotics and associated technologies have evolved into indispensable components across numerous industries, particularly in advanced manufacturing. Moreover, their application has extended beyond production-centric domains to encompass pivotal roles in military and law enforcement sectors, owing to advancements in sophistication, reliability, and compactness. This paper proposes the implementation of a real-time object detection system capable of precisely identifying and locating recognized objects, presenting a significant and practical advancement. Integrating various modules such as GSM and GPS with a Raspberry Pi, along with an array of sensors including metal and flame sensors, an L293 Motor driver, HC-SR04 Ultrasonic sensor, and HC-05 Bluetooth, this system facilitates seamless recognition and localization of objects in real-time. The Bluetooth connectivity feature enables remote control of the device, while a built-in camera captures images of unidentified individuals, thereby enhancing its surveillance capabilities. The incorporation of a motor driver ensures secure and controlled movement of the robot, while the ultrasonic sensor detects obstacles within its proximity. Additionally, the metal sensor swiftly identifies metallic objects, relaying their locations to the administrator, whereas the flame sensor promptly detects fires, enabling the system to dispatch location data for immediate response. This holistic approach renders the proposed system a versatile tool applicable across a spectrum of scenarios, ranging from security and surveillance operations to emergency response initiatives.

A comparative study of machine learning models for identifying noxious gases through thermal fingerprint measurements and MOS sensors

Recently, there has been a notable surge of interest in developing swift and precise gas detection and categorization tools through artificial intelligence. This work specifically focuses on designing a simple sensor array configuration and empirically compares various machine-learning models for identifying multiple gases. The study employs eight metal oxide semiconductor sensors, each operating independently based on the thermal fingerprint principle. These sensors are utilized to gather data on responses to different toxic gases, and a range of traditional machine learning classifiers are trained and assessed using this dataset. The classifiers undergo investigation across various train/test dataset split ratios and different principal component analysis dimensionalities. Average accuracy metrics are employed over the entire testing dataset to evaluate model performance. The results demonstrated the challenge of selectively detecting each gas type solely through conventional analyses with the gas response data of the proposed sensor array. Nevertheless, the utilization of machine learning models has exhibited promising outcomes in augmenting gas identification and classification. The findings reveal a consistent improvement in testing accuracy for the Gradient Boosting model, which achieves an outstanding accuracy rate, with instances of reaching 100% accuracy in the training dataset when three or more principal components are considered. This study highlights the potential of the proposed straightforward sensor array and presents effective recognition algorithms applicable to creating electronic noses for gas-sensing applications.

360 DEGREE DESTROYER FOR MILITARY

The "360 Degree Destroyer for Military" model operates by automatically detecting various threats such as missiles, tankers, guns, humans, and drones using a laptop camera. Detection is accomplished through the implementation of CNN algorithms. Instead of firing upon detection, the system utilizes a laser to pinpoint detected object and LED is used to indicate the threat level of the detected object, and this system also detects the land mine using metal sensor.
