Tailoring the Electrochemical Responses of MOF-74 Via Dual-Defect Engineering for Superior Energy Storage.

Rationally designed defects in a crystal can confer unique properties. This study showcases a novel dual-defects engineering strategy to tailor the electrochemical response of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials used for electrochemical energy storage. Salicylic acid (SA) is identified as an effective modulator to control MOF-74 growth and induce structural defects, and cobalt cation doping is adopted for introducing a second type of defect. The resulting dual-defects engineered bimetallic MOF exhibits a discharging capacity of 218.6 mAh g-1, 4.4 times that of the pristine MOF-74, and significantly improved cycling stability. Moreover, the engineered MOF-74(Ni0.675Co0.325)-8//Zn aqueous battery shows top energy/power density performances for Ni-Zn batteries (266.5Wh kg-1, 17.22kW kg-1). Comprehensive investigations reveal that engineered defects modify the local coordination environment and promote the in situ electrochemical reconfiguration during operation to significantly boost the electrochemical activity. This work suggests that rational tailoring of the defects within the MOF crystal is an effective strategy to manipulate the coordination environment of the metal centers and the corresponding electrochemical reconfiguration for electrochemical applications.

Amino Functionality Enables Aqueous Synthesis of Carboxylic Acid-Based MOFs at Room Temperature by Biomimetic Crystallization.

Enzyme immobilization within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising solution to avoid denaturation and thereby utilize the desirable properties of enzymes outside of their native environments. The biomimetic mineralization strategy employs biomacromolecules as nucleation agents to promote the crystallization of MOFs in water at room temperature, thus overcoming pore size limitations presented by traditional postassembly encapsulation. Most biomimetic crystallization studies reported to date have employed zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs). Herein, we expand the library of MOFs suitable for biomimetic mineralization to include zinc(II) MOFs incorporating functionalized terephthalic acid linkers and study the catalytic performance of the enzyme@MOFs. Amine functionalization of terephthalic acids is shown to accelerate the formation of crystalline MOFs enabling new enzyme@MOFs to be synthesized. The structure and morphology of the enzyme@MOFs were characterized by PXRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDX, and the catalytic potential was evaluated. Increasing the linker length while retaining the amino moiety gave rise to a family of linkers; however, MOFs generated with the 2,2'-aminoterephthalic acid linker displayed the best catalytic performance. Our data also illustrate that the pH of the reaction mixture affects the crystal structure of the MOF and that this structural transformation impacts the catalytic performance of the enzyme@MOF.

Confined-Coordination Induced Intergrowth of Metal-Organic Frameworks into Precise Molecular Sieving Membranes.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with rich functionality and tunable pore system are promising for precise molecular separation; however, it remains a challenge to develop defect-free high-connectivity MOF membrane with high water stability owing to uncontrollable nucleation and growth rate during fabrication process. Herein, we report on a confined-coordination induced intergrowth strategy to fabricate lattice-defect-free Zr-MOF membrane towards precise molecular separation. The confined-coordination space properties (size and shape) and environment (water or DMF) were regulated to slow down the coordination reaction rate via controlling the counter-diffusion of MOF precursors (metal cluster and ligand), thereby inter-growing MOF crystals into integrated membrane. The resulting Zr-MOF membrane with angstrom-sized lattice apertures exhibits excellent separation performance both for gas separation and water desalination process. It was achieved H2 permeance of ~1200 GPU and H2/CO2 selectivity of ~67; water permeance of ~8 L ⋅ m-2 ⋅ h-1 ⋅ bar-1 and MgCl2 rejection of ~95 %, which are one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of state-of-the-art membranes. The molecular transport mechanism related to size-sieving effect and transition energy barrier differential of molecules and ions was revealed by density functional theory calculations. Our work provides a facile approach and fundamental insights towards developing precise molecular sieving membranes.

Revealing electrostatic-manipulated self-assembly mechanism helps to readily design enhanced MOF-derived microwave absorbers

The controllable self-assembly of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) crystals plays a vital role in modulating the performance for microwave absorbers. However, most current strategies require colloidal or intricate chemical modifications of nanoparticles, thereby increasing the complexity of structural construction and impeding the broader application of microwave absorbers. To resolve this tough issue, we herein innovatively propose a more easily achievable electrostatic-manipulated self-assembly strategy. By readily manipulating the electrostatic adsorption and repulsion between particles, the aggregation and growth sites of initial MOF crystals are anchored, hence facilitating to the construction of solid-core/shell and hollow porous microstructures for absorbers. The substantial improvement depending on electrostatic effects is clearly observed in experimental results. It demonstrates that the Co@hollow N-doped carbon spheres (Co@HNCSs) absorber, induced by electrostatic repulsion, shows the best overall absorption performance, with a strong absorption of −65.4 dB at a thickness of 1.9 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.4 GHz at a thickness of 1.6 mm, covering almost the entire Ku band. The influence of these strategies on the electromagnetic response mechanisms is further comprehensively discussed. Accordingly, we believe this strategy offers new insights for the MOFs’ structural absorbers via electrostatic-manipulated self-assembly strategy.

Hierarchically porous MOF@COF structures with ultrafast gas diffusion rate for C2H6/C2H4 separation

For ethylene purification, C2H6-selective metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential to directly produce polymer-grade C2H4 from C2H6/C2H4 mixtures. Most C2H6-traping MOFs are ultra-microporous structures so as to strengthen multiple supramolecular interactions with C2H6. However, the narrowed pore channels of C2H6-traping MOFs cause large guest diffusion barriers, greatly hampering their practical applications. Herein, we present a feasible strategy by precisely constructing hierarchically porous MOF@COF core–shell structures to address this issue. Additional mesoporous diffusion channels were incorporated between MOF crystals through the construction of the COF shell, thereby enhancing the gas adsorption kinetics. Notably, designing a core–shell MOF@COF structure with an optimal coating amount of mesoporous COF shell will further improve the gas diffusion rate. Breakthrough experiments reveal that the tailored MOF@COF composites can effectively achieve C2H6/C2H4 separation and maintain its separation performance over five continuous measurement cycles. This investigation opens up a new avenue to solve the diffusion/transfer issues and provides more opportunities and potentials for MOF@COF composites in practical separation applications.

Self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically two-dimensional MOF single-crystals

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a wide variety of applications in molecular separation and other emerging technologies, including atomically thin electronics. However, due to the inherent fragility and strong interlayer interactions, high-quality MOF crystals of atomic thickness, especially isolated MOF crystal monolayers, have not been easy to prepare. Here, we report the self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically thin MOF single-crystals, yielding monolayer single-crystals of poly[Fe(benzimidazole)2] up to 62 μm in grain sizes. By using transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution atomic force microscopy, high crystallinity and atomic-scale single-crystal structure are verified in the atomically MOF flakes. Moreover, integrating such MOFs with MoS2 to construct ultrathin van der Waals heterostructures is achieved by direct growth of atomically MOF single-crystals onto monolayer MoS2, and enables a highly selective ammonia sensing. These demonstrations signify the great potential of the method in facilitating the development of the fabrication and application of atomically thin MOF crystals.

Highly defective ultra-small tetravalent MOF nanocrystals

The size and defects in crystalline inorganic materials are of importance in many applications, particularly catalysis, as it often results in enhanced/emerging properties. So far, applying the strategy of modulation chemistry has been unable to afford high-quality functional Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanocrystals with minimized size while exhibiting maximized defects. We report here a general sustainable strategy for the design of highly defective and ultra-small tetravalent MOFs (Zr, Hf) crystals (ca. 35% missing linker, 4–6 nm). Advanced characterizations have been performed to shed light on the main factors governing the crystallization mechanism and to identify the nature of the defects. The ultra-small nanoMOFs showed exceptional performance in peptide hydrolysis reaction, including high reactivity, selectivity, diffusion, stability, and show emerging tailorable reactivity and selectivity towards peptide bond formation simply by changing the reaction solvent. Therefore, these highly defective ultra-small M(IV)-MOFs particles open new perspectives for the development of heterogeneous MOF catalysts with dual functions.

Radical-Driven Crystal-Amorphous-Crystal Transition of a Metal-Organic Framework.

Self-assembly-based structural transition has been explored for various applications, including molecular machines, sensors, and drug delivery. In this study, we developed new redox-active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) called DGIST-10 series that comprise π-acidic 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based ligands and Ni2+ ions, aiming to boost ligand-self-assembly-driven structural transition and study the involved mechanism. Notably, during the synthesis of the MOFs, a single-crystal-amorphous-single-crystal structural transition occurred within the MOFs upon radical formation, which was ascribed to the fact that radicals prefer spin-pairing or through-space electron delocalization by π-orbital overlap. The radical-formation-induced structural transitions were further confirmed by the postsynthetic solvothermal treatment of isolated nonradical MOF crystals. Notably, the transient amorphous phase without morphological disintegration was clearly observed, contributing to the seminal structural change of the MOF. We believe that this unprecedented structural transition triggered by the ligand self-assembly magnifies the structural flexibility and diversity of MOFs, which is one of the pivotal aspects of MOFs.

Metal-organic framework/polyurea composite microreactors prepared in oil-in-oil emulsions

A new technique was developed to create composite microcapsules consisting of metal–organic framework (MOF) and polyurea. This method employs oil-in-oil (O/O) emulsion as a template for forming these microcapsules. It involves emulsifying a polar solvent containing MOF reagents within a nonpolar phase containing a suitable surfactant and an isocyanate monomer. Subsequently, the addition of the amine monomer initiates two simultaneous processes: the formation of MOF crystals in the core of polar droplets and the interfacial polymerization to create polyurea shell. Optimization of the method involved adjusting various parameters affecting the composite microcapsules' structure and morphology. These parameters include the surfactant’s type and concentration, the emulsion phases’ type and concentration, and quantity of the MOF component.This method was applied to create palladium-based MOF/polyurea microreactors by encapsulating sodium tetrachloropalladate and then reducing the palladium salt with hydrogen to generate reactive palladium species. The produced catalysts were utilized in the selective hydrogenation of terminal alkynes. It was observed that the selectivity of the catalyst is influenced by the quantity of encapsulated MOF, the amount of encapsulated palladium, and the solvent type used for the reaction.

Protein–polyphenol nanoassemblies modulated construction of zeolitic imidazole framework-67 based nanofiltration membrane for effective separation of dye/salt mixtures

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential in various separation applications. However, fast nucleation rate and crystallization of MOFs, produce non-uniform and uncontrollable sized crystals, which are not suitable for the formation of MOF-based membranes. Herein, we propose the concept of utilizing protein polyphenol nanoassemblies (PPNs) as the building blocks for the confined growth of MOFs to fabricate zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67)-based membranes. We first demonstrated that colloidal PPNs as modulators in solution enables the formation of ZIF-67 MOFs with uniform and controllable crystal sizes. Subsequently, we utilized the metal salt coordinated PPNs (Co2+@PPN) as the precursor layer matrix deposited on porous polymeric support to fabricate ZIF-67 membranes via in-situ growth strategy at room temperature. The resultant membrane features a robust heterogeneous and well-integrated ZIF-67-reinforced PPN (ZIF-67@PPN) microporous networks. Benefiting from the rigid and multidimensional micropores of ZIF-67, the optimized ZIF-67@PPN1 composite membrane with improved water stability exhibited good water permeance (45.68 L m−2 h−1 bar−1), excellent dye desalination performance (Na2SO4/Congo red selectivity of 1271.47), and good antibiotic desalination performance (NaCl/Erythromycin selectivity of 21.46). The findings in this work provide important engineering concepts for the development of MOF-based membranes using sustainable nature-derived building blocks for emergent environment-relevant desalination applications in the chemical process industry.

In situ Synthesis of Single Layered Metal-Organic Frameworks via Inkjet Printing on a Cellulose Nanofiber Film.

The inkjet printing is a simple method to develop pattern-controlled 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of operation. Despite the sophisticated structures of MOF crystals, the MOF surfaces are easily contaminated by the adsorption of an ink solution, and the printing nozzle can be clogged by the aggregates of MOFs during printing. Unlike the mixture inks of MOFs and a carrier medium, the surface-specific patterning by in situ synthesis provides the film surface with the controlled patterns of an MOF single layer having different morphologies of MOFs without changing the ink cartridges. It enables facile printing due to the low viscosity of inks and escapes the risk of nozzle clogging because MOFs are synthesized at the printed patterns on the substrates. The ion-exchanged cellulose nanofiber (CNF) films form strong coordination with metal ions enhancing the stability of the MOFs on the film surface. It also demonstrates the controlled coverage of the MOFs by the printing pass number and the carboxylate content of CNF and the tunable adsorption of the guest molecules for different loading capacities of the printed patterns.

Grayscale to Multicolor Laser Writing Inside a Label‐Free Metal‐Organic Frameworks

AbstractDirect laser writing (DLW), being a universal tool for fast creating colorless/color images on different substrates, still suffers from simultaneous writing grayscale and color images inside the transparent media. Here, it is discovered that a unique set of porosity, coordination bonding between organic and inorganic building blocks, and the lack of inversion symmetry of the label‐free metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), on the one hand, provides the possibility of laser writing the grayscale images through the amorphization/carbonization. On the other hand, the reduction of the laser writing power leads to controllable creation of color images via defect formation with sub‐diffraction resolution inside the MOF crystals. The latter is due to the processes of self‐absorption of generated optical harmonics by nonlinear MOFs within the visible spectral range. As a result, simultaneous grayscale and multicolor writing of QR codes and images are demonstrated with up to 400 nm resolution inside optically transparent MOF crystals, thereby discovering a new family of functional materials for DLW.

First-principles screening of metal–organic frameworks for entangled photon pair generation

The transmission of strong laser light in nonlinear optical materials can generate output photons sources that carry quantum entanglement in multiple degrees of freedom, making this process a fundamentally important tool in optical quantum technology. However, the availability of efficient optical crystals for entangled light generation is severely limited in terms of diversity, thus reducing the prospects for the implementation of next-generation protocols in quantum sensing, communication and computing. To overcome this, we developed and implemented a multi-scale first-principles modeling technique for the computational discovery of novel nonlinear optical devices based on metal–organic framework (MOF) materials that can efficiently generate entangled light via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Using collinear degenerate type-I SPDC as a case study, we computationally screen a database of 114 373 synthesized MOF materials to establish correlations between the structure and chemical composition of MOFs with the brightness and coherence properties of entangled photon pairs. We identify a subset of 49 non-centrosymmetric mono-ligand MOF crystals with high chemical and optical stability that produce entangled photon pairs with intrinsic G(2) correlation times τc∼10−30 fs and pair generation rates in the range 104−1010s−1mW−1mm−1 at 1064 nm. Conditions for optimal type-I phase matching are given for each MOF and relationships between pair brightness, crystal band gap and optical birefringence are discussed. Correlations between the optical properties of crystals and their constituent molecular ligands are also given. Our work paves the way for the computational design of MOF-based devices for optical quantum technology.

By controlling the growth kinetics, the MOFs crystals (STU‐1) are readily engineered into different shapes with designated styles of crystalline inhomogeneity. A subsequent one‐step pyrolysis of these MOFs with intraparticle difference can induce a simultaneous self‐hollowing and carbonization process, thereby producing various functional HNCs including yolk‐shell polyhedrons, hollow microspheres, mesoporous architectures, and superstructures. Superior to the existing methods, this synthetic strategy relies only on the complex nature of single‐component MOFs crystals without involving tedious operations like coating, etching, or ligand exchange, making it convenient, efficient, and easy to scale up. An ultra‐stable Na‐ion battery anode is demonstrated by the HNCs with extraordinary cyclability (93 % capacity retention over 8000 cycles), highlighting a high level of functionality of the HNCs.

Solvent-Driven Dynamics: Crafting Tailored Transformations of Cu(II)-Based MOFs.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a sort of crystalline porous coordination polymers composed of metal ions and organic linkers, have been intensively studied for their ability to take up nonpolar gas-phase molecules such as ethane and ethylene. In this context, interpenetrated MOFs, where multiple framework nets are entwined, have been considered promising materials for capturing nonpolar molecules due to their relatively higher stability and smaller micropores. This study explores a solvent-assisted reversible strategy to interpenetrate and deinterpenetrate a Cu(II)-based MOF, namely, MOF-143 (noninterpenetrated form) and MOF-14 (doubly interpenetrated forms). Interpenetration was achieved using protic solvents with small molecular sizes such as water, methanol, and ethanol, while deinterpenetration was accomplished with a Lewis-basic solvent, pyridine. Additionally, this study investigates the adsorptive separation of ethane and ethylene, which is a significant application in the chemical industry. The results showed that interpenetrated MOF-14 exhibited higher ethane and ethylene uptakes compared to the noninterpenetrated MOF-143 due to narrower micropores. Furthermore, we demonstrate that pristine MOF-14 displayed higher ethane selectivity than transformed MOF-14 from MOF-143 by identifying the "fraction of micropore volume" as a key factor influencing ethane uptake. These findings highlight the potential of controlled transformations between interpenetrated and noninterpenetrated MOFs, anticipating that larger MOF crystals with narrower micropores and higher crystallinity will be more suitable for selective gas capture and separation applications.

Pore Structure Compartmentalization for Advanced Characterization of Metal-Organic Framework Materials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous crystals which are widely used as selective adsorbents, separation membranes, catalysts, gas and energy storage media, and drug delivery vehicles. The unique adsorption and transport properties of MOFs are determined by their complex three-dimensional (3D) networks of pores, cages, and channels that differ in size, shape, and chemical composition. While the morphological structure of MOF crystals is known, practical MOF materials are rarely ideal crystals. They contain secondary phases, binders, residual chemicals, and various types of defects. It is of paramount importance to evaluate the degree of crystallinity and accessibility of different pore compartments to adsorb guest molecules. To this end, we recently suggested the method of fingerprint isotherms based on the comparison of the experimentally measured adsorption isotherms and theoretical isotherms on ideal MOF crystals produced by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and decomposed with respect to different pore compartments [Parashar, S. ACS Appl. Nano Mater. 2021, 4, 5531-5540 and Dantas, S.; Neimark, A. V. ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2020, 12, 15595-15605]. In this work, we develop an automated algorithm for pore network compartmentalization that is a prerequisite for calculations of the fingerprint isotherms. The proposed algorithm partitions the unit cell into realistically shaped compartments based on the geometric pore size distribution. The proposed method is demonstrated on several characteristic systems, including Cu-BTC, IRMOF-1, UiO-66, PCN-224, ZIF-412, and 56 structures from the CoRE MOF database.

In Situ Synthesis of NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN Nanofibers for Removal Co(II) through an Electrospinning Process.

In this study, researchers developed a novel composite material called NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN, which consists of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) grown on electrospun PAN nanofibers (NFs). The successful formation of the composite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and the hydrophilicity of NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN was demonstrated by the water contact angle (WCA). Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption performance of Co(II) under different conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 58.72 mg/g, and almost 95% of the adsorption was achieved within the first 6 h. The adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir models. Chemisorption and molecular layer adsorption are the main mechanisms of adsorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further reveals that the interaction between the adsorbent and cobalt is a coordination interaction. In this study, NH2-MIL-53-Al was grown in situ on PAN to ensure effective loading of MOFs and prevent agglomeration during the NF mixing process. This approach successfully addressed the challenge of exposing active sites within the embedded MOF crystals. Additionally, it overcame the difficulty of recycling traditional MOF adsorbents. As a result, the exceptional performance of MOF NFs offers a promising solution for the efficient removal of cobalt-containing wastewater.

Controlled Growth of Highly Defected Zirconium-Metal-Organic Frameworks via a Reaction-Diffusion System for Water Remediation.

The relentless growth of metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry is paralleled by the persistent urge to control the MOFs physical and chemical properties. While this control is mostly achieved by solvothermal syntheses, room temperature procedures stand out as more convenient and sustainable pathways for the production of MOF materials. Herein, a novel approach to control the crystal size and defect numbers of a dihydroxy-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66(OH)2) at room temperature is reported. Through a reaction-diffusion method in a 1D system, zirconium salt was diffused into an agar gel matrix containing the organic linker to form nanocrystals of UiO-66(OH)2 with tailored structural features that include crystal size distribution, surface area, and defect number. By variation of the synthesis parameters of the system, hierarchical MOF nanocrystals with an average size ranging from 30 nm up to 270 nm and surface areas between 201 and 500 m2 g-1 were obtained in a one-pot synthetic route. To stress the importance of crystal size, morphology, and structural defects on the adsorption properties of UiO-66(OH)2, the adsorption capacity of the MOF toward methylene blue dye was tested with the largest and most defected crystals achieving the best performance of 202 mg/g. The distinctive structural characteristics including the hierarchical micromesoporous frameworks, the nanosized particles, and the highly defective crystals obtained by our synthesis procedure are deemed challenging through the conventional synthesis methods. This work paves the way for engineering MOF crystals with tunable physical and chemical properties, using a green synthesis procedure, for their advantageous use in many desirable applications.

Tunable Nonlinear Optical Properties Based on Metal–Organic Framework Single Crystals

AbstractSolid‐state hybrid materials with designability in topology and tunable photo‐responsiveness hold great promise for multitudinous applications from optoelectronics to information storage/communication. However, the judicious design and synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with intrinsically custom‐made nonlinear optical (NLO) properties including multiple photon absorption and harmonic generation effects suitable for miniaturized devices remain highly challenging. Herein, the design and synthesis of a novel pillared framework named after Zn‐TCPE‐DPNI MOF coordinated by zinc ions (Zn2+), aggregation induced emission (AIE) featured [1,1′‐biphenyl]‐4‐carboxylic acid (H4TCPE), and N,N′‐di(4‐pyridyl)‐1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxydiimide (DPNI) are reported. The highly ordered Zn‐TCPE‐DPNI MOF single crystal exhibits tunable NLO responses by switching incident excitation wavelengths of a femtosecond laser from 900 to 1500 nm. The noticeable transformation from two‐ or three‐photon excited photoluminescence (2PL or 3PL) to the concurrent occurrence of 3PL and third harmonic generation (THG), and eventually to the mere emergence of THG with a high effective susceptibility χ(3) (3ω) of 2.9 × 10−12 esu is observed. This study paves a novel avenue for the design and synthesis of photoluminescent MOF crystals with tunable NLO responses toward the fabrication of multifunctional NLO devices targeted for optoelectronics and information communication.
