Highly defective ultra-small tetravalent MOF nanocrystals

The size and defects in crystalline inorganic materials are of importance in many applications, particularly catalysis, as it often results in enhanced/emerging properties. So far, applying the strategy of modulation chemistry has been unable to afford high-quality functional Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanocrystals with minimized size while exhibiting maximized defects. We report here a general sustainable strategy for the design of highly defective and ultra-small tetravalent MOFs (Zr, Hf) crystals (ca. 35% missing linker, 4–6 nm). Advanced characterizations have been performed to shed light on the main factors governing the crystallization mechanism and to identify the nature of the defects. The ultra-small nanoMOFs showed exceptional performance in peptide hydrolysis reaction, including high reactivity, selectivity, diffusion, stability, and show emerging tailorable reactivity and selectivity towards peptide bond formation simply by changing the reaction solvent. Therefore, these highly defective ultra-small M(IV)-MOFs particles open new perspectives for the development of heterogeneous MOF catalysts with dual functions.

Optimal adsorption of pefloxacin antibiotics from aqueous solutions: Improved performance with metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr)

The widespread use and subsequent release of antibiotics by humans and animals pose health and environmental risks, compelling their removal from aquatic ecosystems. MIL-101(Cr), a metal-organic framework (MOF), exhibits versatile applications in antibiotic adsorption owing to its exceptional structural characteristics. In this context, MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles are successfully prepared via the hydrothermal method to remove pefloxacin (PEF) from aqueous solutions. The resulting MIL-101(Cr) adsorbents showcase high crystallinity (97.6%), a large surface area (3166 m2/g), broad nanopore sizes, good thermal stability, and efficient reusability. Factors including initial PEF concentration, pH, dosage of adsorbent, and temperature are thoroughly investigated. The findings reveal a good adsorption capacity (254.3 mg/g) with an optimal removal efficiency (99.7%) at 308 K in a neutral pH of 7.0 when the adsorbent dosage is 250 mg/L and the initial PEF concentration is 200 mg/L within 80 min of contact. Among the three adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin models), the Langmuir equation best fits the studies, indicating a maximum adsorption capacity of 253.8 mg/g at 25°C, while the experimental equilibrium adsorption capacity is 229.2 mg/g at the same temperature. Adsorption kinetics aligns with the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters and activation energy affirm the endothermic and spontaneous behavior of the adsorption process, attributed to both physisorption and chemisorption. This study highlights the promising potential of synthesized MOF nanocrystals as an effective adsorbent for antibiotics in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Stress-driven recrystallization of pentacene films via diffusion-induced ingress of MOF nanocrystals into the grain boundaries

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as versatile candidates for producing functional materials for various applications. However, the growth of MOF thin film becomes challenging due to non-availability of a proper solvent that restricts the use of the materials in electronic sensor fabrication. The receptor molecules in sensors are often used to functionalize the semiconducting channel. However, integrating such molecules degrade the crystallinity of channel materials, leading to poor sensor performance. In this work, we report the growth of a MOF (CPO-27-Ni) thin film and the recrystallization of semiconducting pentacene thin films due to diffusion of the crystallites into the grain boundaries. MOF films were successfully spin coated at various revolutions per minute (rpm) on pentacene surfaces. The growth of MOF films was studied using statistical analysis of rough surfaces by utilizing scaling theory to capture the evolution of surface morphologies. The x-ray reflectivity study unveiled the diffusion-induced ingress of the MOF through the grain boundaries of pentacene films that imparts compressive stress within the grains leading to subsequent rearrangement of pentacene molecules in the thin-film phase and recrystallizes the bulk crystallographic phase, which in a way will enhance the device performance.

Controlled Growth of Highly Defected Zirconium-Metal-Organic Frameworks via a Reaction-Diffusion System for Water Remediation.

The relentless growth of metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry is paralleled by the persistent urge to control the MOFs physical and chemical properties. While this control is mostly achieved by solvothermal syntheses, room temperature procedures stand out as more convenient and sustainable pathways for the production of MOF materials. Herein, a novel approach to control the crystal size and defect numbers of a dihydroxy-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66(OH)2) at room temperature is reported. Through a reaction-diffusion method in a 1D system, zirconium salt was diffused into an agar gel matrix containing the organic linker to form nanocrystals of UiO-66(OH)2 with tailored structural features that include crystal size distribution, surface area, and defect number. By variation of the synthesis parameters of the system, hierarchical MOF nanocrystals with an average size ranging from 30 nm up to 270 nm and surface areas between 201 and 500 m2 g-1 were obtained in a one-pot synthetic route. To stress the importance of crystal size, morphology, and structural defects on the adsorption properties of UiO-66(OH)2, the adsorption capacity of the MOF toward methylene blue dye was tested with the largest and most defected crystals achieving the best performance of 202 mg/g. The distinctive structural characteristics including the hierarchical micromesoporous frameworks, the nanosized particles, and the highly defective crystals obtained by our synthesis procedure are deemed challenging through the conventional synthesis methods. This work paves the way for engineering MOF crystals with tunable physical and chemical properties, using a green synthesis procedure, for their advantageous use in many desirable applications.

Superhydrophobic MOF/polymer composite with hierarchical porosity for boosting catalytic performance in an humid environment.

The poor hydrostability of most reported metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has become a daunting challenge in their practical applications. Recently, MOFs combined with multifunctional polymers can act as a functional platform and exhibit unique catalytic performance; they can not only inherit the outstanding properties of the two components but also offer unique synergistic effects. Herein, an original porous polymer-confined strategy has been developed to prepare a superhydrophobic MOF composite to significantly enhance its moisture or water resistance. The selective nucleation and growth of MOF nanocrystals confined in the pore of PDVB-vim are closely related to the structure-directing and coordination-modulating properties of PDVB-vim. The resultant MOF/PDVB-vim composite not only produces superior superhydrophobicity without significantly disturbing the original features but also exhibits a novel catalytic activity in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of indoles with trans-β-nitrostyrene because of the accessible sites and synergistic effects.

Oriented Self-assembly of Flexible MOFs Nanocrystals into Anisotropic Superstructures with Homogeneous Hydrogels Behaviors.

Building of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) homogeneous hydrogels made by spontaneous crystallization remains a significant challenge. Inspired by anisotropically structured materials in nature, an oriented super-assembly strategy to construct micro-scale MOFs superstructure is reported, in which the strong intermolecular interactions between zirconium-oxygen (Zr─O) cluster and glutamic acid are utilized to drive the self-assembly of flexible nanoribbons into pumpkin-like microspheres. The confined effect between water-flexible building blocks and crosslinked hydrogen networks of superstructures achieved a mismatch transformation of MOFs powders into homogeneous hydrogels. Importantly, the elastic and rigid properties of hydrogels can be simply controlled by precise modulation of coordination and self-assembly for anisotropic superstructure. Experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrates that MOFs anisotropic superstructure exhibits dynamic double networks with a superior water harvesting capacity (119.73gg-1) accompanied with heavy metal removal (1331.67mgg-1) and strong mechanical strength (Young's modulus of 0.3GPa). The study highlights the unique possibility of tailoring MOFs superstructure with homogeneous hydrogel behavior for application in diverse fields.

Spatial Heterogeneity and Strong Coupling of FeII /FeIII in anIndividual Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticle for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction.

The synthesis and characterization of an FeII /FeIII metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystal with spatial heterogeneity that arises from the non-uniform distribution of different valence states is disclosed. The FeII /FeIII -Ni Prussian blue analog (PBA) delivers superior photocatalytic performance in the selective CO2 reduction reaction thanks to the strong FeII /FeIII coupling, with CO yield up to 12.27mmol g-1 h-1 and 90.6% selectivity under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory calculation and experimental studies prove that the spatial heterogeneity of FeII /FeIII in the individual MOF nanocrystal not only directs and expedites the charge transfer within a catalyst particle but also creates the heterogeneity of catalytically-active Ni sites for efficient CO2 photoreduction. The current findings add to a growing literature of materials with compositional heterogeneity and provide a reference for future research.

In Situ Growth of Sub-50-nm Zirconium Aminobenzenedicarboxylate Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals for Carbon Dioxide Capture.

Controlled synthesis of sub-50-nm metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are usually called porous coordination polymers, exhibits huge potential applications in gas storage and separation. Herein, surface-confined growth of zirconium aminobenzenedicarboxylate MOF (UIO-66-NH2) nanocrystals on polypyrrole hollow spheres (PPyHSs) is achieved through covalently grafted benzene dicarboxylic acid ligands using bridged molecules. PPyHSs modified with ligand molecules prohibit excessive growth of UIO-66-NH2 nanocrystals on their confined surface, resulting in smaller-sized nanocrystals (<50 nm) and a monolayer UIO-66-NH2 coating. Benefiting from the homogeneous dispersion of UIO-66-NH2 nanocrystals with a smaller size (40 ± 10 nm), the as-prepared PPyHSs@UIO-66-NH2 hybrids with high specific surface area and pore volume exhibit remarkable CO2 capture performance. Moreover, the time required to reach the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity shortens with decreasing UIO-66-NH2 crystals size. As a proof of concept, the proposed covalent grafting strategy can be used for synthesizing sub-50-nm UIO-66-NH2 nanocrystals for CO2 capture.

Coating the surface of interconnected Cu2O nanowire arrays with HKUST-1 nanocrystals via electrochemical oxidation

Controlling the crystallization of Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) at the nanoscale is currently challenging, and this hinders their utilization for multiple applications including photo(electro)chemistry and sensors. In this work, we show a synthetic protocol that enables the preparation of highly homogeneous Cu2O@MOF nanowires standing on a conductive support with extensive control over the crystallization of the MOF nanoparticles at the surface of the Cu2O nanowires. Cu2O nanowires were first prepared via templated electrodeposition, and then partially converted into the well-known Cu-MOF HKUST-1 by pulsed electrochemical oxidation. We show that the use of PVP as a capping agent during the electrochemical oxidation of Cu2O into HKUST-1 provides control over the growth of the MOF nanocrystals on the surface of the Cu2O nanowires, and that the size of the MOF crystals obtained can be tuned by changing the concentration of PVP dissolved in the electrolyte. In addition, we propose the use of benzoic acid as an alternative to achieve control over the size of the obtained MOF nanocrystals when the use of a capping agent should be avoided.

Ce(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Gel for Ultrafast Removal of Trace Arsenate from Water.

As a potential replacement for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructing metal-organic gels (MOGs) is an appealing but challenging topic since MOGs are a kind of shapeable MOF gels. Also, the rapid adsorption of trace heavy metal ions in aqueous media remains a serious challenge. Herein, a simple strategy for the synthesis of Ce(IV)-based metal-organic gel (Ce-MOG) was first developed for the rapid adsorption of trace As(V). The (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 obtains hydroxide bridges after adding apposite NaOH, leading to [Ce6O4(OH)4]12+ clustering and inducing fast and excessive nucleation rates, which also leads to coordination disturbance of MOF nanocrystals to obtain Ce-MOG. The Ce-OH groups are the key to gel formation through hydrogen bonding and are the active site for the ultrafast adsorption of As(V). As expected, the resultant Ce-MOG has an excellent adsorption rate, making it possible to effectively decontaminate 500 ppb of As(V) to below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended threshold for drinking water (10 ppb) within 1 min. It achieves equilibrium adsorption in 10 min, and the final arsenate-removing efficiency reaches 99.8%. For Ce-MOF, the effluent concentration of As(V) is higher than the drinking water standard, while equilibrium adsorption takes 60 min. The initial adsorption rate of Ce-MOG, h(k2qe2) is calculated and indicated to be 67.67 mg g-1 min-1, about 19.96 times that of Ce-MOF (3.39 mg g-1 min-1). As such, the excellent As(V) decontamination rate, selectivity, and reusability of Ce-MOG indicate its great potential for practical drinking water purification.

Breathing porous liquids based on responsive metal-organic framework particles

Responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that display sigmoidal gas sorption isotherms triggered by discrete gas pressure-induced structural transformations are highly promising materials for energy related applications. However, their lack of transportability via continuous flow hinders their application in systems and designs that rely on liquid agents. We herein present examples of responsive liquid systems which exhibit a breathing behaviour and show step-shaped gas sorption isotherms, akin to the distinct oxygen saturation curve of haemoglobin in blood. Dispersions of flexible MOF nanocrystals in a size-excluded silicone oil form stable porous liquids exhibiting gated uptake for CO2, propane and propylene, as characterized by sigmoidal gas sorption isotherms with distinct transition steps. In situ X-ray diffraction studies show that the sigmoidal gas sorption curve is caused by a narrow pore to large pore phase transformation of the flexible MOF nanocrystals, which respond to gas pressure despite being dispersed in silicone oil. Given the established flexible nature and tunability of a range of MOFs, these results herald the advent of breathing porous liquids whose sorption properties can be tuned rationally for a variety of technological applications.

Electronic-Control Friction Behavior of Porous Metal-Organic Framework@Ag Nanocrystals as Self-Repairing Lubricant Additive.

The low conductivity and poor antifriction performance of lubricants are the main causes of wear failure in mechanical equipment under electronic-control friction. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites can be used to fabricate a new kind of lubricant additive. Herein, porous Cu-BTC@Ag MOF nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via an in situ generation method. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that the nano-Ag element was evenly dispersed throughout the Cu-BTC matrix. Cu-BTC@Ag nanocrystals can significantly improve the electrical conductivity of the EMI-BF4 ionic liquid, which increased by 38.8%. The average coefficients of friction (COF) and wear volume of EMI-BF4 ionic liquid with 0.5 wt % Cu-BTC@Ag decreased by 8.3 and 16% without applied voltage, respectively. This finding was due to the continuous extrusion of the EMI-BF4 stored in the Cu-BTC@Ag pores under external load. It entered the contact zone, thereby maintaining the continuous supply of lubricant. At 20 V applied voltage in the friction process, the COF of the EMI-BF4/2.0wt %Cu-BTC@Ag lubricant decreased by 18.8%, and its wear volume decreased by 32.7%. The Cu-BTC@ Ag nanocrystals adsorbed onto the metal surface to form a friction reaction film by the action of electric fields, which can repair the wear defects on the friction interface. Therefore, Cu-BTC@Ag nanocrystals acting as an additive in lubricant have remarkable prospects in the area of electronic-control friction.

Integrated Soft Porosity and Electrical Properties of Conductive-on-Insulating Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals.

A one-stone, two-bird method to integrate the soft porosity and electrical properties of distinct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a single material involves the design of conductive-on-insulating MOF (cMOF-on-iMOF) heterostructures that allow for direct electrical control. Herein, we report the synthesis of cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures using a seeded layer-by-layer method, in which the sorptive iMOF core is combined with chemiresistive cMOF shells. The resulting cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures exhibit enhanced selective sorption of CO2 compared to the pristine iMOF (298 K, 1 bar, S from 15.4 of ZIF-7 to 43.2-152.8). This enhancement is attributed to the porous interface formed by the hybridization of both frameworks at the molecular level. Furthermore, owing to the flexible structure of the iMOF core, the cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures with semiconductive soft porous interfaces demonstrated high flexibility in sensing and electrical "shape memory" toward acetone and CO2 . This behavior was observed through the guest-induced structural changes of the iMOF core, as revealed by the operando synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements.

Advances in Application of Cellulose-MOF Composites in Aquatic Environmental Treatment: Remediation and Regeneration.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained remarkable interest in water treatment due to their fascinating characteristics, such as tunable functionality, large specific surface area, customizable pore size and porosity, and good chemical and thermal stability. However, MOF particles tend to easily agglomerate in nanoscale, thus decreasing their activity and processing convenience. It is necessary to shape MOF nanocrystals into maneuverable structures. The in situ growth or ex situ incorporation of MOFs into inexpensive and abundant cellulose-family materials can be effective strategies for the stabilization of these MOF species, and therefore can make available a range of enhanced properties that expand the industrial application possibilities of cellulose and MOFs. This paper provides a review of studies on recent advances in the application of multi-dimensional MOF-cellulose composites (e.g., aerogels, membranes, and bulk materials) in wastewater remediation (e.g., metals, dyes, drugs, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils) and water regeneration by adsorption, photo- or chemocatalysis, and membrane separation strategies. The advantages brought about by combining MOFs and cellulose are described, and the performance of MOF-cellulose is described and compared to its counterparts. The mechanisms of relative MOF-cellulose materials in processing aquatic pollutants are included. Existing challenges and perspectives for future research are proposed.

Electrostatic Interaction‐directed Construction of Hierarchical Nanostructured Carbon Composite with Dual Electrical Conductive Networks for Zinc‐ion Hybrid Capacitors with Ultrastability

Metal–organic framework (MOF)‐derived carbon composites have been considered as the promising materials for energy storage. However, the construction of MOF‐based composites with highly controllable mode via the liquid–liquid synthesis method has a great challenge because of the simultaneous heterogeneous nucleation on substrates and the self‐nucleation of individual MOF nanocrystals in the liquid phase. Herein, we report a bidirectional electrostatic generated self‐assembly strategy to achieve the precisely controlled coatings of single‐layer nanoscale MOFs on a range of substrates, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxide (GO), MXene, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), MOFs, and SiO2. The obtained MOF‐based nanostructured carbon composite exhibits the hierarchical porosity (Vmeso/Vmicro: 2.4), ultrahigh N content of 12.4 at.% and “dual electrical conductive networks.” The assembled aqueous zinc‐ion hybrid capacitor (ZIC) with the prepared nanocarbon composite as a cathode shows a high specific capacitance of 236 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, great rate performance of 98 F g−1 at 100 A g−1, and especially, an ultralong cycling stability up to 230 000 cycles with the capacitance retention of 90.1%. This work develops a repeatable and general method for the controlled construction of MOF coatings on various functional substrates and further fabricates carbon composites for ZICs with ultrastability.

Rapid Fabrication of High-Permeability Mixed Matrix Membranes at Mild Condition for CO2 Capture.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), conjugating the advantages of flexible processing-ability of polymers and high-speed mass transfer of porous fillers, are recognized as the next-generation high-performance CO2 capture membranes for solving the current global climate challenge. However, controlling the crystallization of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and thus the close stacking of MOF nanocrystals in the confined polymer matrix is still undoable, which thus cannot fully utilize the superior transport attribute of MOF channels. In this study, the "confined swelling coupled solvent-controlled crystallization" strategy is employed for well-tailoring the in-situ crystallization of MOF nanocrystals, realizing rapid (<5 min) construction of defect-free freeway channels for CO2 transportation in MMMs due to the close stacking of MOF nanocrystals. Consequently, the fabricated MMMs exhibit approximately fourfold enhancement in CO2 permeability, i.e., 2490 Barrer with a CO2 /N2 selectivity of 37, distinctive antiplasticization merit, as well as long-term running stability, which is at top-tier level, enabling the large-scale manufacture of high-performance MMMs for gas separation.
