Controlling Triboelectric Charge of MOFs by Leveraging Ligands Chemistry.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), but the effects of ligand choice on triboelectric charge remain underexplored. Hence, this paper demonstrates the effect of single, binary, and ternary ligands on TENG performance of cobalt/cerium-based (Co─Ce) bimetallic MOFs utilizing 2-methylimidazole (2Melm), terephthalic acid (BDC), and benzene tricarboxylic acid (BTC) as ligands. The detailed structural characterization revealed that varying ligand chemistries led to distinct MOF features affecting TENG performance. Single ligand bimetallic MOFs (designated as CoCe-2MeIm, CoCe-BDC, CoCe-BTC) has lower performance than binary ligand (designated as CoCe-2MeIm-BDC, CoCe-2MeIm-BTC, CoCe-BDC-BTC) and ternary ligand MOFs (designated as CoCe-2MeIm-BDC-BTC). Among all, the binary ligand MOF, CoCe-2MeIm-BTC, shows the best results (598V, 26.7µA) due to the combined effect of imidazole ring and (─COO─) groups. This is attributed to lone pairs on nitrogen atoms and a delocalized π-electron system in imidazole system in this material. CoCe-BTC has the lowest results (31V, 3.2µA) due to the bulkier nature of the electron-withdrawing (─COO─) groups and their impact on the π-electron system of the benzene ring. This study showcases the potential of ligand chemistry manipulation to control triboelectric charge and thereby enhance MOF-based TENG performance.

Adsorption in Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: The Role of Pore Structure and Topology.

Pore topology and chemistry play crucial roles in the adsorption characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). To deepen our understanding of the interactions between MOFs and CO2 during this process, we systematically investigate the adsorption properties of a group of pyrene-based MOFs. These MOFs feature Zn(II) as the metal ion and employ a pyrene-based ligand, specifically 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (TBAPy). Including different additional ligands leads to frameworks with distinctive structural and chemical features. By comparing these structures, we could isolate the role that pore size, the presence of open-metal sites (OMS), metal-oxygen bridges, and framework charges play in the CO2 adsorption of these MOFs. Frameworks with constricted pore structures display a phenomenon known as the confinement effect, fostering stronger MOF-CO2 interactions and higher uptakes at low pressures. In contrast, entropic effects dominate at elevated pressures, and the MOF's pore volume becomes the driving factor. Through analysis of the CO2 uptakes of the benchmark materials ─some with narrower pores and others with larger pore volumes─it becomes evident that structures with narrower pores and high binding energies excel at low pressures. In contrast, those with larger volumes perform better at elevated pressures. Moreover, this research highlights that open-metal sites and inherent charges within the frameworks of ionic MOFs stand out as CO2-philic characteristics.

Rapid and accurate identification of effective metal organic frameworks for tetrafluoromethane/nitrogen separation by machine learning

BackgroundEffectively capturing tetrafluoromethane (CF4), a notorious greenhouse gas having a greenhouse warming potential 6630 times higher than carbon dioxide, is important to mitigate climate change. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents to entrap CF4 with extreme high selectivity because they contain versatile functionalized ligands and tunable pores. However, the large population makes experimental methods unpractical to perform the large-scale screening and rational selection of efficient MOFs. MethodsIn this work, an intelligent method based on machine learning was developed to identify the important features of MOFs governing their CF4/N2 separation performances and establish the relationship between these features and performance metrics, including the CF4 adsorption capacity, the adsorption selectivity of CF4 over N2, and their trade-off. Significant findingsThe random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm was found to exhibit the highest accuracy in performance prediction. The heat of adsorption, the relative molecular mass of MOFs, and the density of MOFs were three critical features that influenced the CF4/N2 separation performances. These dominant features indicate that the pore geometry, framework geometry, and the interaction law between CF4 and MOFs significantly affected their CF4/N2 separation efficiency. Machine learning is thus a powerful tool to guide the design of CF4-selective MOFs and extend the applicability of machine learning among chemical and environmental communities.

Understanding the adsorption properties of CO2 and N2 by a typical MOF structure: Molecular dynamics and weak interaction visualization

An extensible molecular dynamics (MD) force field for a typical metal–organic framework (MOF) has been developed and verified in comparison with experimental data. The visualization of the important weak interactions based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations is performed. The dynamic process of CO2 and N2 adsorption by MOF was then studied by MD methods. The gas adsorption and desorption during temperature and pressure swing were also investigated. It is found that the structural features of MOF have an important effect on the regional range and strength of the weak interactions, and the region of the van der Waals potential surface of the MOF can determine the gas density distribution. The adsorption is dominated by van der Waals interactions on the whole and the variation of the total weak interaction energy can reflect that of the adsorbed amount. The sorption/desorption responds more slowly to temperature swing than to pressure swing.

The Utilization of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives Composite in Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Up to now, the mainstream adoption of renewable energy has brought about substantial transformations in the electricity and energy sector. This shift has garnered considerable attention within the scientific community. Supercapacitors, known for their exceptional performance metrics like good charge/discharge capability, strong power density, as well as extended cycle longevity, have gained widespread traction across various sectors, including transportation and aviation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique traits including adaptable structure, highly customizable synthetic methods, and high specific surface area, have emerged as strong candidates for electrode materials. For enhancing the performance, MOFs are commonly compounded with other conducting materials to increase capacitance. This paper provides a detailed analysis of various common preparation strategies and characteristics of MOFs. It summarizes the recent application of MOFs and their derivatives as supercapacitor electrodes alongside other carbon materials, metal compounds, and conductive polymers. Additionally, the challenges encountered by MOFs in the realm of supercapacitor applications are thoroughly discussed. Compared to previous reviews, the content of this paper is more comprehensive, offering readers a deeper understanding of the diverse applications of MOFs. Furthermore, it provides valuable suggestions and guidance for future progress and development in the field of MOFs.

Accelerating In Silico Discovery of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ethane/Ethylene and Propane/Propylene Separation: A Synergistic Approach Integrating Molecular Simulation, Machine Learning, and Active Learning.

Cryogenic distillation, a currently employed method for C2H4/C2H6 and C3H6/C3H8 mixture separation, is energy-intensive, prompting the research toward alternative technologies, including adsorbent-based separation. In this work, we combine machine learning (ML) technique with high-throughput screening to screen ∼23,000 hypothetical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for paraffin (C2H6 and C3H8) selective adsorbent separation. First, structure-based prescreening was employed to remove MOFs with undesired geometric properties. Further, a random forest model built upon the multicomponent grand canonical Monte Carlo (m-GCMC) simulation data of training set MOFs was found to be the most successful in learning the relationship between MOF features and olefin/paraffin mixture separation. Using this technique, the separation performance of the remaining (test set) MOFs was predicted, and the top-performing MOFs were identified. We also employed active learning (AL) to evaluate its effectiveness in improving the prediction of olefin/paraffin selectivity. AL was discovered to be ∼29 times more efficient than the best-supervised ML model, as it was able to identify the top materials in limited training data and at a fraction of computational cost and time as compared to ML techniques. Among the top selected materials, framework chemistry was found to be the most important parameter. Nickel and copper (as a metal node) in a tfzd and hms topological arrangement respectively, were discovered to be a prevalent attribute in high-performing MOFs, further demonstrating the prominent significance of framework chemistry. Additionally, the top MOFs discovered were studied in detail and further compared to the previously reported MOFs. These MOFs show the highest selectivity for C2H4/C2H6 and C3H6/C3H8 mixture separation, as reported until date. The hierarchical strategy devised in this study will facilitate the quick screening of MOFs across multiple databases toward industrially significant separation processes by leveraging molecular simulations and AL.

Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework Materials: Design, Construction, and Application in the Field of Photocatalysis.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel category of porous crystalline materials with an exceptionally high surface area and adjustable pore structure. They possess a designable composition and can be easily functionalized with different units. Porphyrins with conjugated tetrapyrrole macrocyclic structures can absorb light from ultraviolet to visible light regions, and their structures and properties can be facilely regulated by altering their peripheral groups or central metal ions. Porphyrin-based MOFs constructed from porphyrin ligands and metal nodes combine the unique features of porphyrins and MOFs as well as overcoming their respective limitations. This paper reviewed the design and construction, light absorption and charge transfer pathways, and strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of porphyrin-based MOFs, and highlighted the recent progress in the field of CO2 reduction, hydrogen evolution, organic synthesis, organic pollutant removal, and nitrogen fixation. The intrinsic relationships between the structure and the property of porphyrin-based MOFs received special attention, especially the relationships between the arrangements of porphyrin ligands and metal nods and the charge transfer mechanism. We attempted to provide more valuable information for the design and construction of advanced photocatalysts in the future. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of the porphyrin-based MOFs are also discussed.

Dual synergistic effect of the amine-functionalized MIL-101@cellulose sorbents for enhanced CO2 capture at ambient temperature

The development of high carbon dioxide (CO2) sorption capacity materials is necessary for the deployment of the CO2 capture and storage strategy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising substitutes for traditional liquid and solid CO2 capture sorbents due to their high surface area, tunable pore size, diverse composition, and various physical and chemical properties. However, MOFs feature the intrinsic limitations of powder agglomeration, weak binding affinity, and sluggish diffusion kinetics, thus hindering their industrial application in CO2 capture. Herein, we design an amine-functionalized MIL-101@cellulose (NH2-MIL-101@BM) composite sorbent by anchoring NH2-MIL-101 nanoparticles onto the BM matrix through hydrogen bonding interaction. The dual synergistic effect, origin from the physical sorption synergistic effect and chemisorption synergistic effect proposed between NH2-MIL-101 and BM, not only facilitates the mass transfer of CO2 by reducing the diffusion resistance through hierarchical-pore structure but also offers stronger sorption sites with CO2 by increasing the adsorption energy of metal-CO2 or amine-CO2, which are confirmed by series of characterizations and theory functional calculations. Benefiting from the above merits, the NH2-MIL-101@20 %BM sorbent delivers a superior initial CO2 sorption capacity of 13.4 mmol/g when the BM doping amount is 20 wt% at 25 °C, and also shows good recycle stability even after 15 runs with maintainable structure. This work displays the in-depth mechanism understanding for enhanced CO2 capture, providing value inspiration for future MOF-based composite sorbent construction for CO2 capture at ambient temperatures.

Metal-organic framework-based platforms for implantation applications: recent advances and challenges.

The development of minimally invasive technology has promoted the widespread use of implant interventional materials, which play an important role in alleviating patients' pain during and after surgery. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their related hybrids formed by bridging ligands and metal nodes via covalent bonds represent one of the smart platforms in implant interventional fields due to their large surface area, adjustable compositions and structures, biodegradability, etc. Significant progresses in the implantation application of MOF-based materials have been achieved recently, but these studies are still in the initial stage. This review highlights the recent advances of MOFs and their related hybrids in orthopedic implantation, cardio-vascular implantation, neural tissue engineering, and biochemical sensing. Each correction between the structural features of MOFs and their corresponding implanted works is highlighted. Finally, the confronting challenges and future perspectives in the implant interventional field are discussed.

Metal-organic framework-based adsorbents for blood purification: progress, challenges, and prospects.

Blood purification, such as hemodialysis (HD), plasma exchange (PE), and hemoperfusion (HP), is widely applied in patients with organ failure (such as kidney and liver failure). Among them, HP mainly relies on porous adsorbents to efficiently adsorb accumulated metabolic wastes and toxins, thus improving purification efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a high porosity, large surface area, high loading capacity, and tailorable topology, are emerging as some of the most promising materials for HP. Compared with non-metal framework counterparts, the self-built metal centers of MOFs feature the intrinsic advantages of coordination with toxin molecules. However, research on MOFs in blood purification is insufficient, particularly in contrast to materials applied in other biomedical applications. Thus, to broaden this area, this review first discusses the essential characteristics, potential mechanisms, and structure-function relationship between MOFs and toxin adsorption based on porosity, topology, ligand functionalization, metal centers, and toxin types. Moreover, the stability, utilization safety, and hemocompatibility of MOFs are illustrated for adsorbent selection. The current development and progress in MOF composites for HD, HP, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are also summarized to highlight their practicability. Finally, we propose future opportunities and challenges from materials design and manufacture to the computational prediction of MOFs in blood purification. It is anticipated that our review will expand the interest of researchers for more impact in this area.

Post-Synthetic Modifications of Ti(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Photocatalysis and Conductivity

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are coordination networks with organic ligands containing potential voids, ideal for guest-host interactions. These unique characteristics make them interesting materials for several different applications, including catalysis. Unfortunately, most MOFs feature metal oxide nodes that are insulting by nature, which limits their potential in electro- and photochemical catalysts. To combat these issues, post-synthetic modifications (PSM) can be used to tune MOF properties. This research reports on different PSMs incorporated into the Ti(IV)-based MOFs MIL-125(Ti) and MIL-125(Ti)-NH2. PSMs that introduce intentional defect states and dopant metal ions, such as Ce(IV), were explored to determine their influence on the photo-degradation of Rhodamine B in aqueous solution. Post-Synthetic Metal Exchange (PSME) was used to incorporate Ce(IV) at the Ti(IV) sites in MIL-125(Ti) and MIL-125(Ti)-NH2, and intentional defect states were introduced using formic acid during MOF synthesis. In addition, conductive organic polymers were utilized to make novel polymer-MOF hybrid composites that showed enhanced charge transport properties compared to pristine MOF. Ultimately, these results show how PSMs can be used to impart conductivity and enhance photocatalysis in the MOFs MIL-125(Ti) and MIL-125(Ti)-NH2.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Nanoarrays for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis.

The development of highly active and stable electrode materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the widespread application of electrochemical energy conversion systems. In recent years, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with self-supporting array structures have been extensively studied because of their high porosity, abundant metal sites, and flexible and adjustable structures. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in the design, preparation, and applications of MOF-based nanoarrays for the OER, beginning with the introduction of the architectural advantages of the nanoarrays and the characteristics of MOFs. Subsequently, the design principles of robust and efficient MOF-based nanoarrays as OER electrodes are highlighted. Furthermore, detailed discussions focus on the composition, structure, and performance of pristine MOF nanoarrays (MOFNAs) and MOF-based composite nanoarrays. On the one hand, the effects of the two components of MOFs and several modification methods are discussed in detail for MOFNAs. On the other hand, the review emphasizes the use of MOF-based composite nanoarrays composed of MOFs and other nanomaterials, such as oxides, hydroxides, oxyhydroxides, chalcogenides, MOFs, and metal nanoparticles, to guide the rational design of efficient OER electrodes. Finally, perspectives on current challenges, opportunities, and future directions in this research field are provided.

Shaping Methods of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Natural Gas Storage

The eco-friendly advantages of cleaner fuels such as natural gas have been extensively documented. However, the practical utilization of these fuels is restricted by the limitations of existing gas storage technologies. In this discussion, this paper evaluates the broad spectrum of possibilities that gas fuels present for transforming the energy sector, while also addressing the hindrances posed by current storage technologies that impede this transition. This paper scrutinizes the practical implications of natural gas storage, employing crystalline, porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) while referring to the latest benchmark outcomes and ultimate storage objectives in this domain. Specifically, this delve into the industrial constraints posed by the typically powdered form of MOFs and emphasize the recent advancements in MOF shaping. In contrast to their unprocessed powder condition, the features of MOFs as shaped in this study are examined, and a full review of several structuring methods is provided. The industrial usage of MOFs in applications involving gas processing is anticipated to be accelerated by this research.

Application of MOFs in Hydrogen Storage

This research analyzes the current energy problems and environmental problems and proposes to use hydrogen energy as a clean alternative energy source, which has high energy density and less pollution. After comparing the advantages and disadvantages of various hydrogen storage solutions, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are selected as the storage and transportation medium because of its large capacity, favourable reversibility, appropriate reaction conditions and relatively low density. The hydrogen storage mechanism of MOFs and the factors affecting its hydrogen storage capacity are introduced and discuss some methods to improve the storage features of MOFs. Three promising, MOFs, MOF-5, MIL-101 and NU-1501, are listed and their storage performance and specific structure are introduced. The current problems in the application and processing of partial hydrogen storage MOFs are proposed, and some feasible solutions and processing methods are introduced. Finally, the application prospects of MOFs are prospected and suitable development directions are proposed, which will be helpful for future research.

Electrochemiluminescence Properties and Sensing Application of Zn(II)-Metal-Organic Frameworks Constructed by Mixed Ligands of Para Dicarboxylic Acids and 1,10-Phenanthroline.

Four metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were designed and prepared through a mixed-ligand strategy by controlling the combination of various dicarboxylic acid ligands with invariant center metal and o-phenanthroline heterocyclic ligand. The regulatory effects of ligand electronic band and crystal structure on the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) characteristics of MOFs were verified by experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The flexible chain structure of MOF-2 promotes electron transfer between MOF electroactive free radicals and the co-reactant, making it show outstanding ECL characteristics among all of the four MOFs with the luminescence quantum efficiency 8.37 times that of tris(bipyridine)-ruthenium(II) ([Ru(bpy)3]2+). Meanwhile, a new ECL mechanism for MOF luminescent crystal materials with reactive oxygen species in solvents as a co-reactant in the aqueous aerobic environment has been proposed. MOF-2 was selected to construct an ECL sensor for the determination of glucose in human urine samples. This study provides a useful idea for the development and design of new luminescent molecular crystal materials.

Assessment of synthesis conditions on the corrosion inhibitive features of ZIF-67 MOF

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have indeed attracted substantial interest owing to their distinctive features and diverse applications, such as corrosion protection. In this work, using two synthesis methods, namely co-precipitation (CZ67) and solvothermal (SZ67), a cobalt-based zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-67) was developed as an essential family of MOFs. The results of the characterization confirmed that ZIF-67 particles were synthesized successfully. According to the results of XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, ICP-OES, TGA, and BET analysis, the SZ67 has a higher surface area and higher stability in solution compared to CZ67. In addition, CZ67 and SZ67 were introduced in epoxy coatings to form CZ67/EPC and SZ67/EPC. The SZ67/EPC exhibited greater corrosion inhibition activity than the CZ67/EPC. After 24 h of exposure to the salty media, the|Z|at the low frequency for the scratched SZ67/EPC (119,500 Ω.cm2) reached 1.1 and 5.7 times of that for the CZ67/EPC and Neat epoxy coatings, respectively. Furthermore, SZ67/EPC demonstrated superior barrier anticorrosion properties during immersion for forty days. The corrosion protection and adhesion performance of SZ67/EPC surpassed the rest of the coated samples after salt spray exposure.

Mono-coordinated defect toward metal-organic framework anode with remarkable electrochemical performance

The ultrahigh porosity and ligand tunability features of Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) make them excellent platforms for energy conversion and storage. Nevertheless, the practical applications of these materials are restricted due to their low conductivity and insufficient redox sites. Herein, a mono-coordinated ferrocenecarboxylic acid (Fc) was incorporated into MIL-53(Al) via a straightforward hydrothermal process to regulate the local coordination structure. In comparison to the MIL-53(Al) with a capacity of only 113 mAh/g, the MIL-53(Al)-Fc anode delivered an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 823 mAh/g over 700 cycles at 1 A·g−1. Furthermore, the developed MIL-53(Al)-Fc anode can exhibit a super high rate capacity of 489 mAh/g at 2 A/g. Importantly, it is discovered that the incorporation of Fc-doped MIL-53(Al) leads to a sustained increase in capacity throughout the process of charge/discharge cycling. Through a combination of experimental analysis and theoretical calculations, it has been demonstrated that the presence of unsaturated coordination metal sites into Fc-doped MIL-53(Al) not only improve its conductivity and the kinetics of Li+ storage, but also expose more reaction sites for Li+ facile desorption. This, in turn, facilitate the order–disorder transition during cycles. Meanwhile, the 1D nanorods morphologies can provide superior interaction between the active sites and electrolyte. Thus, this work will pave a new way to engineer advanced MOFs electrode materials for practical utilization of ultrahigh performance LIBs.

Accurately predicting the performance of MOF-based mixed matrix membranes for CO2 removal using a novel optimized extreme learning machine by BAT algorithm

The increasing number of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) based on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for carbon capture has created a demand for accurate and swift evaluation of their separation performance. Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a valuable tool for this purpose, providing an efficient approach for screening these materials and accelerating their practical application. In this study, we developed and optimized a novel and reliable hybrid machine learning paradigm based on the extreme learning machines (ELM) method using the BAT algorithm optimization. In order to predict the performance of MMMs, including gas permeability and selectivity parameters, nine machine learning models were developed by incorporating descriptors and fingerprints for polymer featurization, physical and structural features of MOFs as well as operating conditions. The impact of input features on MMMs performance was also explored using RReliefF analysis. The study found that the performance of the hybrid ELM-based algorithms was significantly improved by using the BAT algorithm. Furthermore, the RReliefF analysis revealed that the cage size of the MOF and the type of polymer matrix used are the most significant parameters in forecasting the permeability of MOF-based MMMs, while the loading amount and pressure were identified as critical determinants of selectivity. Overall, these findings contribute to the development of more efficient and accurate methods for evaluating MMMs, which are crucial for carbon capture applications.

Theoretical isotherm equation for adsorption-induced structural transition on flexible metal–organic frameworks

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit an adsorption-induced structural transition known as "gate opening" or "breathing," resulting in an S-shaped adsorption isotherm. This unique feature of flexible MOFs offers significant advantages, such as a large working capacity, high selectivity, and intrinsic thermal management capability, positioning them as crucial candidates for revolutionizing adsorption separation processes. Therefore, the interest in the industrial applications of flexible MOFs is increasing, and the adsorption engineering for flexible MOFs is becoming important. However, despite the establishment of the theoretical background for adsorption-induced structural transitions, no theoretical equation is available to describe S-shaped adsorption isotherms of flexible MOFs. Researchers rely on various empirical equations for process simulations that can lead to unreliable outcomes or may overlook insights into improving material performance owing to parameters without physical meaning. In this study, we derive a theoretical equation based on statistical mechanics that could be a standard for the structural transition type adsorption isotherms, as the Langmuir equation represents type I isotherms. The versatility of the derived equation is shown through four examples of flexible MOFs that exhibit gate opening and breathing. The consistency of the formula with existing theories, including the osmotic free energy analysis and intrinsic thermal management capabilities, is also discussed. The developed theoretical equation may lead to more reliable and insightful outcomes in adsorption separation processes, further advancing the direction of industrial applications of flexible MOFs.

Highly Efficient Propyne/Propylene Separation in a "Flexible-Robust" and Hydrolytically Stable Cu(II)-MOF.

Propyne/propylene separation is important in the petrochemical industry but challenging due to their similar physical properties and close molecular sizes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of promising adsorbents for light hydrocarbon separations. Among them, the so-called "flexible-robust" MOFs combine the advantages of flexibility and rigidity in structure and could show enhanced gas separation selectivity as well as improved gas uptake at low pressure. Interpenetrated MOFs offer a platform to explore the "flexible-robust" feature of MOFs based on their subnetwork displacement in the process of gas adsorption. Herein, we present two hydrolytically stable MOFs (BUT-308 and BUT-309) with interpenetrated structures and fascinating propyne/propylene separation performance. BUT-308 is composed of interpenetrated 2D Cu(BDC-NH2)BPB layers (H2BDC-NH2 = 2-aminobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid; BPB = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene), while BUT-309 consists of twofold interpenetrated 3D pillared-layer Cu2(BDC-NH2)2(BPB-CF3) nets (BPB-CF3 = 2-trifluoromethyl-1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene). Gas adsorption measurements showed that BUT-309 was a "flexible-robust" adsorbent with multistep adsorption isotherms for C3H4 rather than C3H6 at a wide temperature range. The guest-dependent pore-opening behavior endows BUT-309 with high potential in the C3H4/C3H6 separation. The C3H4 adsorption measurements of BUT-309 at 273-323 K showed that the lowering of the temperature induced the pore-opening action at lower pressure. Column breakthrough experiments further confirmed the capability of BUT-309 for the efficient removal of C3H4 from a C3H4/C3H6 binary gas, and the C3H6 processing capacity at 273 K (15.7 cm3 g-1) was higher than that at 298 K (35.2 cm3 g-1). This work shows a rare example of "flexible-robust" MOFs and demonstrated its high potential for C3H4/C3H6 separation.
