Effect of particle size and application rate of steel (Linz-Donawitz, LD) slag on heavy metal built-up in soil and their transfer dynamics in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.)

Linz-Donawitz (LD) slag is a solid industrial waste generated during the production of steel. In general, the amount of LD slag produced varies from 300 to 400 kg ton-1 of steel. Presently only 25 % of the steel slag, which is also rich in various macro and micro-nutrients, is being reused in India compared to 70–100 % in other countries. The present study deals with the possibility of utilizing LD slagas a nutrient rich low-cost soil conditioner in agriculture. An experiment was thus conducted to determine the effect of LD slag application at rates 0.25, 0.50 and 1 t ha-1 in two particle sizes i.e., <50 and <100 microns (µ) on spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Physico-chemical, biological characteristics and heavy metals in soil and latter’s transfer from soil to the foliage was also determined. The results showed that an application of LD slag @1 tha-1 and 100 µ particle size significantly improved the soil microbial count and activity of enzymes such as dehydrogenase and phosphatase while at a smaller particle size of LD slag (50 µ) @ 1 tha-1, a significant increase in the foliage yield of spinach was observed. The risk due to heavy metals present in the steel slag as evidence by indicator of heavy metal content in plants i.e. transfer factor (TF), hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) was within the permissible range. However long-term effect of steel slag application on ecotoxicity and phytotoxicity levels must be deciphered. In conclusion the application of LD slag in spinach does not negatively impact the soil health and in fact causes an increase in the economic yield of spinach.

Growth and cadmium and nickel uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) in a cadmium and nickel co‑contaminated soil and phytoremediation efficiency using ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid

Background: Anthropogenic activities release cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and other heavy metals into soil. Zea mays can clean up contaminated soils, but little is known about how Cd and Ni co-contamination stress affects ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-based phytoextraction and phytoremediation, hence this study was conducted. Methods: The experiment involved nine treatment levels (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg kg-1 Cd and 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 mg kg-1 Ni), grouped into three categories: CT as the control group, P as Cd + Ni only, and CAP as Cd + Ni + EDTA (n=3). The treatments used (CH3COO)2Cd•2H2O and NiSO4 as the source of Cd and Ni, respectively, and EDTA was applied at two rates (0 and 0.5 g/kg). After the experimental period, measurements were taken for shoot length, biomass, and metal concentrations in both the roots and shoots using established procedures. Results: The concentrations of metals in plants' roots and shoots increased as the concentrations in soil increased, but shoot length, biomass, bioconcentration factor (BCF), and translocation factor (TF) values decreased with increasing soil metal content. The application of EDTA increased metal uptake but led to greater root and shoot biomass loss. Generally, TF values for Cd and Ni were less than 1 but most of the BCF values were greater than 1. Conclusions: The study found that phytostabilization is the main mechanism for phytoremediation of Cd-Ni-co-contaminated soils with Zea mays, with EDTA addition enhancing metal accumulation and reducing biomass yield.

Almond shell-derived biochar decreased toxic metals bioavailability and uptake by tomato and enhanced the antioxidant system and microbial community

The effectiveness of almond shell-derived biochar (ASB) in immobilizing soil heavy metals (HMs) and its impact on soil microbial activity and diversity have not been sufficiently studied. Hence, a pot study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of ASB addition at 2, 4, and 6 % (w/w) on soil biochemical characteristics and the bioavailability of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants, as compared to the control (contaminated soil without ASB addition). The addition of ASB promoted plant growth (up to two-fold) and restored the damage to the ultrastructure of chloroplast organelles. In addition, ASB mitigated the adverse effects of HMs toxicity by decreasing oxidative damage, regulating the antioxidant system, improving soil physicochemical properties, and enhancing enzymatic activities. At the phylum level, ASB addition enhanced the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Firmicutes while decreasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Furthermore, ASB application increased the relative abundance of several fungal taxa (Ascomycota and Mortierellomycota) while reducing the relative abundance of Basidiomycota in the soil. The ASB-induced improvement in soil properties, microbial community, and diversity led to a significant decrease in the DTPA-extractable HMs down to 41.0 %, 51.0 %, 52.0 %, and 35.0 % for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively, as compared to the control. The highest doses of ASB (ASB6) significantly reduced the metals content by 26.0 % for Cd, 78.0 % for Cu, 38.0 % for Pb, and 20.0 % for Zn in the roots, and 72.0 % for Cd, 67.0 % for Cu, 46.0 % for Pb, and 35.0 % for Zn in the shoots, as compared to the control. The structural equation model predicts that soil pH and organic matter are driving factors in reducing the availability and uptake of HMs. ASB could be used as a sustainable trial for remediation of HMs polluted soils and reducing metal content in edible plants.

Impact of fly ash deposition on plants diversity, metal content, and associated risk on grazing ruminants in the vicinity of Morupule power station, Botswana

Fly ash (FA) deposition originating from power stations and unprotected dumpsites, have been found to affect plant communities, potentially causing environmental degradation and food chain contamination. An analysis of plant composition, heavy metal concentration in plants and soil within 40 kilometers of the Morupule dumpsite was conducted to evaluate the impact of FA disposal. In addition, risks to the ruminants grazing in this area, were assessed. The windward transect had significantly higher species diversity and richness than the leeward transect, especially in areas closer to the dumpsite. This could be attributed to the inability of some plants to tolerate higher concentrations of toxic metal and alkalinity in areas near the dumpsite. In this study, average concentrations in plants of Cr (546.11 mg kg−1), Mn (905.69 mg kg−1), and Cu (128 mg kg−1) were above toxicity levels of 75-100 mg kg−1 for Cr, 400 mg kg−1 for Mn, and 100 mg kg−1 for Cu. Although the quantities of these metals were above the maximum allowable daily consumption, calculations of the daily plant intake by grazing animals in this area revealed a potential danger of exposure to Cr and Cu. Particularly in areas that were nearest to the FA dumpsite, ruminants grazing on the leeward transect were more exposed to Cu than Cr toxicity. Overall, it was found that FA deposition damaged the plant community and put grazing ruminants at greater danger. However, more investigation is required to pinpoint the precise level of hazardous metals found in the grazing animals in this area.

Human and Ecological Risk Assessment of Soil and Plants Metal Contamination in a Tropical Municipal Solid Waste Dumping Site

ABSTRACT The growing open waste dumpsite contributes to heavy metal leaching, harming public health and ecosystem services. Hence, the study’s novelty lies in its integrated assessment of heavy metal concentration (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soil and plants, incorporating risk assessment using both single and combined indexes in the largest active waste dumpsite in Kelantan, Malaysia. Heavy metal in soil samples Cu (164.896 ± 205.096), Pb (122.177 ± 93.309), and Cr (32.74 ± 26.569) were recorded to exceed the standards, while in the studied plants (castor bean, papaya, pea eggplant, and water spinach), Pb concentrations in all plant parts have surpassed the Malaysia Food Regulation (1985) and FAO/WHO guidelines (2016). Translocation factor (TF) in Cu, Cr, and Pb in water spinach and Cr, Cu, and Cd in pea eggplant have TF > 1. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) was < 1 in pea eggplant and water spinach except for Pb in pea eggplant. Correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation between heavy metals in the soil while contrasts in the plants. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) reveals that the soil waste dumpsite is contaminated with heavy metals. The hazard index (HI) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values of heavy metals on the soil surface had negligible non-cancer risks posed to adults and indicate that soil ingestion and dermal absorption were the two primary carcinogenic risk exposure routes. These findings implied that Beris Lalang waste dumpsite is a potential source of toxic pollutants to the environment and the local population. It is recommended to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study and design an implementation plan for leachate treatment plant. Additionally, a comprehensive assessment of the specific contaminants present in the leachate and their potential impacts on the environment should be conducted to inform targeted and effective treatment strategies.

On the content of toxic elements in meadow grasses of rural areas of Khangalassky district

The importance of studying the microelement composition of soils and vegetation in the Northern territories is due to the role of microelements in soil formation under cryolithozone conditions, and secondly, the influence of the microelement background of plants on the physiological functions of animals and humans. At the same time, heavy metals deserve special attention as they pose a threat to all living organisms due to their ability to accumulate. The article presents data on the content of heavy metals in the aboveground parts of meadow grasses growing under cryolithozone conditions - in the Khangalassky district, located in the Central Yakut biogeochemical province. Atomic absorption spectral analysis showed that the content of heavy metals - cadmium and lead - in the aboveground parts of the studied plants varied significantly depending on the place of collection, but did not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations. The concentration of zinc in some of the herbal collection points exceeded the maximum permissible concentrations. The need to study the content of heavy metals in plants is due to the fact that they are the primary link in the movement of toxic elements along the trophic chain into the human body. Lead and cadmium accumulate in parenchymal organs, are carcinogenic and affect the morbidity and mortality of the northern population.

Accumulation of Heavy Metals and Determination of Natural Radioactivity in the Soil-Thyme System in Omerli, Istanbul: Assessment of Ecological and Health Risk

A significant pathway for human exposure to environmental pollutants is the metal transfer from soil to plants. In this study accumulation of different metals was investigated and natural radioactivity levels were measured in the soil–thyme system. It was found that the soil had higher concentrations of Br, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Pb than the world average and P, Ca, and Zn had higher transfer factors. The natural radioactivity level in the soils is similar to the World average. For thyme samples the average values for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found as 22.7 ± 10.9 Bqkg-1, 61.3 ± 19.9 Bqkg-1 and 722 ± 391 Bqkg-1, respectively. The health and ecological risks of soil were evaluated. The total hazard index of the child was 1.453 on average, greater than that of the adult (0.175), primarily due to the contribution of Cr. Ecological risk assessed based on various indices indicated that Pb and Ni show environmental contamination risk. Our findings confirm that metal concentrations in plants are influenced by metal concentrations in soil, and that metal interactions are important for pollution risk management.

Assessment of heavy metal concentrations in roadside soils and plants around the Dexing copper mine: implications for environmental management and remediation.

While land transportation is crucial for social development, it also introduces various pollutants, including heavy metals, which pose risks to both the environment and human health. This issue is particularly acute in mining areas, yet research focusing on heavy metal accumulation in soils and plants along transportation routes in these areas has been limited. Addressing this gap, this study investigates soil contamination levels and heavy metal concentrations in dominant plants along a highway and railway in the vicinity of the Dexing Copper Mine, the largest open-pit copper mine in China, located in Jiangxi Province. These transportation routes are heavily utilized for ore transportation, making them critical areas for environmental monitoring. Results reveal that the primary heavy metal contaminants in the soil were Cu (84.9 to 2554.3 mg/kg), Pb (38.3 to 2013.4 mg/kg), Cd (0.1 to 46.6 mg/kg), Zn (81.3 to 875.8 mg/kg), and As (11.8 to 2985.2 mg/kg), with significantly higher concentrations found in soils adjacent to the railway compared to the highway. Specifically, for plants along the highway, Cyperus rotundus showed a significant enrichment in Cd and demonstrated a notable capacity to translocate heavy metals from its roots to aerial parts. This is evidenced by the elevated concentration of Cd in the plant's aboveground tissues (0.87 mg/kg). Notably, both the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) values exceeded 1, ranging from 1.07 to 3.62. Contrastingly, despite the elevated heavy metal concentrations in soils adjacent to the railway, plants in these areas did not exhibit hyperaccumulation characteristics. The unique behavior of Cyperus rotundus in accumulating and translocating Cd underscores its potential role in phytoremediation, particularly in the context of environmental management for areas impacted by mining activities, such as those surrounding China's largest copper mine.

Plant communities and potential phytoremediation species for resource utilization of abandoned drilling mud

Oil and gas development produces a large amount of abandoned drilling mud, which may be a source of pollution but may also be a potential resource. A quadrat sampling method was used in the Changqing Oilfield to investigate the plant community characteristics inside and outside abandoned drilling mud pits at different completion times. The importance value of plant showed that the natural succession of plant communities in the abandoned drilling mud pool could be divided into three stages: (1) 4–8 years after the completion of the well, Leymus secalinus, Calamagrostis epigeios with the importance values of more than 100, were dominant species in the initial construction stage; (2) 9–13 years after the succession, the intense competition stage of the plant community, although the importance value of plant inside the mud pit had decreased, it was still higher than the importance value of plant outside the mud pool. The importance values of L. secalinus and Artemisia scoparia outside the mud pool were 62.5 and 52.5, while those in the mud pool were 95 and 75, respectively; (3) 23–28 years after the succession, the gradual stabilization stage of the plant community, the importance value of plant was lower than that in the mud pool. Leymus secalinus, C. epigeios and A. scoparia could be used for phytoremediation of abandoned drilling soil for their higher importance values. Changes of Shannon–Wiener index, Pielou index, Community ecological dominance and vegetation biomass showed that the mud pit was suitable for the recovery and growth of the dominant species, improved the diversity of plant communities inside the mud pit compared with the stable plant community outside the mud pit. Abandoned drilling mud increased the content of nitrogen, potassium and trace elements in plants. While the variation coefficient of heavy metal content in plants inside and outside the mud pit was large, but the content of heavy metals in plants was within the normal range. Abandoned drilling mud has the potential for resource utilization on the premise of ensuring soil quality and safety. This study provides information on the comprehensive treatment, resource utilization, disposal economics and environmental safety of abandoned drilling mud.

A novel deep eutectic solvent modified magnetic covalent organic framework for the selective separation and determination of trace copper ion in medicinal plants and environmental samples

BackgroundPretreatment techniques should be introduced before metal ion determination because there is very low content of heavy metals in Chinese medicinal plants and environmental samples. Magnetic dispersive micro solid phase extraction (MDMSPE) has been widely used for the separation and adsorption of heavy metal pollutants in medicinal plants and environmental samples. However, the majority of MDMSPE adsorbents have certain drawbacks, including low selectivity, poor anti-interference ability, and small adsorption capacity. Therefore, modifying currently available adsorption materials has gained attention in research. ResultsIn this study, a novel adsorbent MCOF-DES based on a magnetic covalent organic framework (MCOF) modified by a new deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized for the first time and used as an adsorbent of MDMSPE. The MDMSPE was combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for selective separation, enrichment, and accurate determination of trace copper ion (Cu2+) in medicinal plants and environmental samples. Various characterization results show the successful preparation of new MCOF-DES. Under the optimal conditions, the enrichment factor (EF) of Cu2+ was 30, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.16 μg L−1, and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 0.54 μg L−1. The results for the determination of Cu2+ were highly consistent with those of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which verified the accuracy and reliability of the method. SignificanceThe established method based on a new adsorption material MCOF-DES has achieved the selective separation and determination of trace Cu2+ in medicinal and edible homologous medicinal materials (Phyllanthus emblica Linn.) and environmental samples (soil and water), which provides a promising, selective, and sensitive approach for the determination of trace Cu2+ in other real samples.

Utilization of banana waste biochar to reduce heavy metal contamination in soil and maize plants

There are indications of heavy metal contamination in soil and agricultural products on paddy fields in Subak Kerdung, Bali. Soil amendments are needed to reduce heavy metal content in contaminated soil to minimize heavy metals in plants. Biochar that contains high organic carbon material and is highly resistant to decomposition is claimed to inhibit and reduce the content of heavy metals in soil and plants. Banana wastes containing cellulose and lignin are considered good as biochar raw materials. This research that aimed to observe the ability of banana waste biochar to reduce heavy metals in soil taken from Subak Kerdung, Bali, was conducted in a greenhouse using maize plants as control plants. The treatments tested consisted of two factors. The first factor was the type of banana waste as biochar-making material consisting of banana stem biochar, banana peel biochar, banana fruit bunch biochar, and mixed biochar (banana stem + banana peel + banana fruit bunch). The second factor was the biochar dosage, which consists of four contents, namely 0 t/ha, 5 t/ha, 10 t/ha, and 15 t/ha. All treatment combinations were arranged in a two-factor, randomized block design with three replications. The results showed that mixed biochar (banana stem + banana peel + banana fruit bunch) effectively reduced Pb and Cu in maize plants. In contrast, banana peel biochar could optimally reduce Cd content in soil and its content in plants. Based on the dose, 15 t/ha of mixed biochar reduced Pb and Cd contents, while 10 t/ha of mixed biochar reduced Cu content.

Use of Some Natural Materials to Reduce Concentrations of some Heavy Metals in Polluted Water and Possibility of Using Them for Irrigation in Calcareous Agricultural Soils

To evaluate efficiency of some natural materials in using them as filters to reduce concentrations of some heavy elements in polluted water, and possibility of using them for irrigation in calcareous agricultural soils, two experiments were conducted, first is laboratory, which is treatment of various polluted waters, namely industrial water, gray water, and river water using three natural treatment materials as filters, which are activated charcoal, Eichhornia crassipes plant powder, Ceratophyllum plant powder. Poles made of polyethylene were used with a length of 100 cm and a diameter of 10 cm equipped with a tap from bottom, a layer of glass wool was placed at bottom, and then treatment materials were placed on top of it at a height of 50 cm. A piece of gauze cloth was placed over it for filter polluted water from solids. Polluted water was passed after filtering from top of column and left for 24 hours for equilibrium, then filtrate was collected from bottom of column. Second experiment, it is biology, as an experiment was conducted in pots of 20 kg capacity, using calcareous soil with a Loamy texture, and Dodonaea seedlings (one of fence plants) were planted. NPK fertilizers were added to it according to fertilizer recommendation, and irrigation was done with tap water after 50% of available water was depleted by gravimetric method. Results showed the following: 1-High concentrations of heavy metals, each of Lead, Ccadmium, Zinc and Nickel in industrial water, where they reached 5.190, 0.043, 3.727 and 0.371 mg L-1, respectively, exceeding limits allowed by World Food and Health Organization for each of Cadmium, Zinc and Nickel, while concentrations of Lead is within internationally permitted limits. As for gray water, Cadmium concentrations exceeded internationally permitted limits, while concentrations of Lead, Zinc and Nickel were within internationally permitted limits. In river water, they were within internationally permitted limits. 2. Decreased concentrations of heavy metals in polluted water treated with various natural treatment materials compared to their concentrations before treatment. The materials used in treatment can be arranged according to their efficiency in adsorption of heavy metals from industrial and gray water as follows: -activated charcoal > Eichhornia crassipes powder > Ceratophyllum powder > Arundo donax plant_powder. 3-High available concentrations of heavy metals in soils passed through polluted water compared to soils irrigated with treated water. Total concentrations were 34.436, 18.227, 8.064 mg kg-1 soil, 31.064, 16.884, 6.190 mg kg-1 soil, 32.860, 12.670, 4.930 mg kg-1 soil, 0.465, 3.680, and 0.590 mg kg-1 soil for Lead and Cadmium elements and Zinc and Nickel in succession and industrial water and gray water and river water successively, after 100 days of cultivation. 4-High concentrations of heavy metals in plants irrigated with different polluted water compared to plants irrigated with different treated water after 100 days of cultivation. Plants irrigated with polluted and treated water can be arranged according to concentration of heavy metals in them as follows: - industrial water > gray water > river water.

Assessment of environmental pollution using indices, transfer factor and source apportionment in soils and plants of wetlands in Northern Nigeria

ABSTRACT This study assessed metal pollution in wetland ecosystems in North-western Nigeria, which is susceptible to pollution from various sources including agriculture, industry and urbanisation. The study analysed the concentrations of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and iron (Fe) in wetland soils and plants from 10 sites in the region. Pollution indices, including contamination factor, modified degree of contamination, Nemerow pollution index and pollution load index, were used to determine the extent of metal pollution in the study area, while transfer factors were calculated to assess the potential for metal transfer from soils to plants. The results showed that metal concentrations in wetland soils and plants varied widely depending on the location and the metal of interest, with some sites showing higher concentrations due to agricultural and mining activities. The pollution indices indicated that metal pollution was generally moderate to highly polluted in the study areas, with some metals showing higher potential for transfer from soil to plants than others. This study provides valuable insights into the extent and severity of metal pollution in some wetland soils and plants in Northern Nigeria.

Combination of intercropping maize and soybean with root exudate additions reduces metal mobility in soil-plant system under wastewater irrigation

The effects of root exudates and irrigation with treated wastewater on heavy metal mobility and soil bacterial composition under intercropping remain poorly understood. We conducted a pot experiment with maize and soybean grown in monocultures or intercultures, irrigated with either groundwater or treated wastewater. In addition, the pre-collected root exudates from hydroponic culture with mono- or inter-cropped maize and soybean were applied to the soil at four levels (0 %, 16 %, 32 % and 64 %). The results showed that application of root exudates increased plant growth and soil nutrient content. The analysis of “Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution” for higher plant biomass and lower soil Cd and Pb concentrations indicated that the best performance of soybean under treated wastewater irrigation was recorded under intercropping applied with 64 % of exudates, with a performance score of 0.926 and 0.953 for Cd and Pb, respectively. The second-best performance of maize under treated wastewater irrigation was also observed under intercropping applied with 64 % of exudates. Root exudate application reduced heavy metals migration in the soil-plant system, with a greater impact in intercropping than in monocropping. In addition, certain soil microorganisms were also increased with root exudate application, regardless of irrigation water. This study suggests that appropriate application of root exudates could potentially improve plant growth and soil health, and reduce toxic heavy metal concentrations in soils and plants irrigated with treated wastewater.

The potential of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to enhance metallic micronutrient uptake and mitigate food contamination in agriculture: prospects and challenges.

Optimizing agroecosystems and crops for micronutrient uptake while reducing issues with inorganic contaminants (metal(loid)s) is a challenging task. One promising approach is to use arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and investigate the physiological, molecular and epigenetic changes that occur in their presence and that lead to changes in plant metal(loid) concentration (biofortification of micronutrients or mitigation of contaminants). Moreover, it is important to understand these mechanisms in the context of the soil microbiome, particularly those interactions of AMF with other soil microbes that can further shape crop nutrition. To address these challenges, a two-pronged approach is recommended: exploring molecular mechanisms and investigating microbiome management and engineering. Combining both approaches can lead to benefits in human health by balancing nutrition and contamination caused by metal(loid)s in the agro-ecosystem.

Plant cadmium resistance 10 enhances tolerance to toxic heavy metals in poplar

Toxic heavy metals originating from human activities have caused irreversible harm to the environment. Toxic heavy metal ions absorbed by crop plants can seriously threaten human health. Therefore, decreasing heavy metal contents in crop plants is an urgent need. The plant cadmium resistance protein (PCR) is a heavy metal ion transporter. In this study, PePCR10 was cloned from Populus euphratica. Bioinformatics analyses revealed its transmembrane structure and gene sequence motifs. The transcript profile of PePCR10 was analyzed by RT-qPCR, and its transcript levels increased under toxic heavy metal (cadmium, lead, aluminum) treatments. Subcellular localization analyses in tobacco cells revealed that PePCR10 localizes at the plasma membrane. Compared with wild type (WT), PePCR10-overexpressing lines showed significantly higher values for plant height, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight under heavy metal stress. Electrolyte leakage, nitroblue tetrazolium staining, and chlorophyll fluorescence analyses indicated that Cd/Al tolerance in PePCR10-overexpressing lines was stronger than that in WT. The Cd/Al contents were lower in the PePCR10-overexpressing lines than in WT under Cd/Al stress. Our results show that PePCR10 can reduce the heavy metal content in poplar and enhance its Cd/Al tolerance. Hence, PePCR10 is a candidate genetic resource for effectively reducing heavy metal accumulation in crops.

Enhancing environmental monitoring: utilizing plant and soil assays to track pollution in a Turkish organized industrial zone

The aim of the current investigation was to determine the concentration of different metals in Mentha spicata L. subsp. tomentosa plants and soils in order to highlight the pollution level in a Turkish Organized Industrial Zone in Dilovasi District, in Kocaeli City. The concentration of metals in plant and soil samples were examined. When the soil values were examined, the highest cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, and lead levels were collected from the location which is hosting numerous industrial facilities. All elements except boron and copper, exceeded normal limits in the leaf samples while cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc reached “toxic levels” in leaf samples. Heavy metals were accumulated in leaves more than rhizomes. Mineral element uptake and accumulation were affected from heavy metal amounts, especially in rhizomes. Although washing procedure notably reduced the concentration of some heavy metals in leaves samples, the reduced values were higher than acceptable levels in some locations of the district. According to the data, it may be said that the region, especially its industrialized parts are heavily polluted by heavy metals. Moreover, in the accordance with the fact that, the highest values of elements were determined in regions having considerable industrial activity such as metal and plastic processing facilities. Additionally, Mentha spicata plants exhibited higher heavy metal values in areas with high heavy metal content in the soil, and lower heavy metal values in areas with low heavy metal concentration. These findings indicate that Mentha spicata, a plant known for its medicinal and culinary uses, can be considered as an effective biomonitor for heavy metal pollution in the region. Consequently, constant inspection is required to prevent the excessive buildup of metals in the region and similar areas with comparable characteristics in terms of human life.

Assessment of industrial effluents for heavy metals concentration and evaluation of grass (Phalaris minor) as a pollution indicator

This study was conducted to investigate the impact of industrial activities on heavy metals status in wastewater, sludge and flora on the bank of selected main drains of the Hayatabad Industrial estate, Peshawar. Plants, sludge and wastewater samples of selected sites were collected and analyzed for heavy metals distribution; cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) levels. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) values were calculated for plants (Phalaris minor) grass species found naturally at all sites. The results showed that the levels of metals in wastewater were lower than permissible limits except Cd and the concentration of metals in plants and sludge were within permissible limits when compared to their respective standards. Metal distribution was in the following order; sludge > plants > wastewater and the concentration of metals varied according to the distance from the source with no specific pattern. Sludge samples for all sites showed a high concentration of metals as compared to plants and wastewater samples. In grass samples, Zn was highest and Cd was low for all sites. Metals accumulation in plants was in order of; roots > shoot. Pearson's coefficient correlation showed that Cr in plant roots and Zn in shoots showed significantly high correlation with Cd in sludge while Pb in roots showed significant negative correlation with Zn in sludge. BCF values for Cr, Pb and Zn were >1, showing the phytoremediation potential of plants.

Assessment of heavy metal accumulation in dust and leaves of Conocarpus erectus in urban areas: Implications for phytoremediation

This study investigated the spatio-temporal variation of heavy metal concentrations in roadside dust and its correlation with heavy metal content in roadside plant leaves. Sixty re-suspended dust samples were collected from six locations during two seasons (dry and wet). Simultaneously, leaf samples of Conocarpus erectus were collected from the same locations. The samples were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer to determine the concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Cd, Pb, and Ni. The pH and conductivity of the dust were also analyzed using a glass electrode. The mean concentrations (μg/g) of heavy metals in the dust ranged from 0.337 to 6.34 for As, 10.60–55.39 for Cu, 542.17–1453.45 for Fe, 0.193–1.026 for Cd, 11.82–52.56 for Pb, and 10.19–29.27 for Ni in different seasons. Similarly, the concentrations of heavy metals in the leaf samples ranged from 0.031 to 1.70 for As, 6.90–13.19 for Cu, 263.09–576.16 for Fe, 0.299–1.33 for Cd, 0.019–17.82 for Pb, and 2.09–7.015 for Ni in different seasons. The correlation between heavy metal concentrations in different seasons was examined using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation methods. To compare the bioaccumulation ability, bio-concentration factors (BCF), comprehensive bio-concentration index (CBCI), and metal accumulation index (MAI) were calculated. The Conocarpus erectus MAI was consistent across different locations and seasons (24.49 ± 0.149). Based on CBCI, the bioaccumulation capacity of heavy metals they were ranged from 6.57 to 12.83 in the dry season and from 5.84 to 10.24 in the wet season. These findings provide valuable insights into the distribution and accumulation of heavy metals in roadside dust and plant leaves, highlighting the potential of Conocarpus erectus as a bio-accumulator for heavy metal pollution in urban environments. The results can be utilized to develop appropriate strategies for environmental management and pollution control in areas affected by vehicular pollution.

Toxic metals from atmospheric particulate matter in food species of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) used in urban gardening. A closed chamber study

In this work, two plant foods, strawberry and tomato, were subjected to exposure to metals from synthetic airborne particles in a closed chamber experiment. The synthetic particles were obtained in the laboratory. Within the closed chamber, particles were added and recirculated for 4 days in a turbulent air stream, causing deposition on the different parts of the plants. They were evaluated because of their increasingly frequent cultivation in urban gardens of cities. The main objectives were to determine whether the species accumulate metals significantly, which species accumulate the most, and in which parts of the plant. Finally, an attempt was made to differentiate the accumulation of pollutants by surface deposition on leaves and fruits from the adsorbed metals into the leaf or the fruit by their stomata or cuticles. The concentration of heavy metals was quantified in fruits, leaves and the soil after exposure. Metals were evaluated as a whole and individually, both in dry and fresh weight basis. The decrease of particulate matter and metals in the air inside the chamber was also studied in order to evaluate the use of both food species as air purifier by vertical gardens. The concentration of metals in plants (mg kg−1) and airborne particles (mg m−3) was measured by microwave plasma optical emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). For the sake comparison of total amount of metals in the samples concentrations were normalized. Strawberries was the food species that accumulated the largest amount of metals. In a dry weight basis, tomato leaves and strawberry fruits were the parts of the plants with higher accumulation capacity of particles and metals. The potential toxic elements Cd, Ni and Cr in tomato leaves and in strawberry fruits had a higher presence in the interior of the plant system. In a fresh weight basis, the strawberry fruit had the most accumulation capacity for metals.
