Multiple anthropogenic influences in the Pará River (Amazonia, Brazil): A spatial-temporal ecotoxicological monitoring in abiotic and biotic compartments

The mineral wealth of the Amazon region is prone to intense exploration with consequent metals mobilization in ecosystems. Besides that, a number of other anthropogenic activities contribute to the imbalance of this important environment. The Pará River is an important water body in the Amazon basin and is under multiple anthropogenic influences, including disorderly urbanization, port activities and processing of minerals such as bauxite and kaolin. In this study, metals concentrations (Al, Cr, Pb, Ba, Ni, and Mn) in water, sediment and organisms (the fish Cheirocerus goeldii and the shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum) and biochemical biomarkers (total antioxidant capacity, ACAP and lipid peroxidation, LPO) were analyzed along five points in the Para River with different distances to a center of anthropogenic activity, in three seasonal periods (rainy, transition and dry). Metals concentrations were similar among sites in each seasonal period but Aluminium (Al) presented the highest concentrations among all analyzed metals both in sediment and water considering all sampling points and all seasonal periods. In the dissolved fraction, Al had values above those established by the local environmental agency, especially during the rainy season. In the biotic compartment, both fish and shrimps showed higher concentrations of metals (Al and Ba) in the rainy season compared to the other seasons. Shrimp was more responsive to metal accumulation than fish, showing an adaptive response of biomarkers. Fish showed an increase of LPO in gills for individuals from the point of greater anthropogenic interference during the rainy season, but no differences in metal accumulation. We conclude that there is a seasonal pattern of metals concentration in different environmental compartments. Metal concentration in organisms and biomarkers responses, showed the effect of anthropogenic influences, which was not evident in results from chemical analyses alone, due to the intensive hydrodynamics in the region.

Bioaccumulation and potential human health risks of metals in commercially important fishes and shellfishes from Hangzhou Bay, China

Hangzhou Bay is facing severe anthropogenic perturbation because of its geographic position. We studied species-specific bioaccumulation of metals in commercially important fishes and shellfishes, and calculated the potential human health hazards through their consumption, which has not been reported earlier from this area. The hierarchy of metal concentration in organisms was in the decreasing order of Zn (10.32 ± 7.13) > Cu (2.40 ± 2.66) > As (0.42 ± 0.26) > Cr (0.11 ± 0.08) > Cd (0.07 ± 0.07) > Pb (0.05 ± 0.02) > Hg (0.012 ± 0.009). Except for Cd and As concentrations in fishes, metal concentrations have not exceeded the national and international guideline values. P. laevis and P. trituberculatus were the most bioaccumulative of the species studied. According to the non-carcinogenic risk assessment, children were more susceptible to metal contamination than adults. The carcinogenic risk (CR) values indicated that children were likely to experience carcinogenic threats for taking cancer-causing agents As and Cd through fish consumption. In terms of organisms, intake of two crab species, P. trituberculatus and E. sinensis, as well as the oyster species P. laevis, could be detrimental to consumers.

Toxicokinetics of metals in the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus exposed to field-contaminated soils from a mining area

Toxicokinetics may help assessing the risk of metal-contaminated soils by quantifying the development of internal metal concentrations in organisms over time. This study assessed the toxicokinetics in Enchytraeus crypticus of non-essential (Pb and Cd) and essential elements (Zn and Cu) in metal-contaminated field soils from a mining area, containing 3.49–24.3 mg Cd/kg dry soil, 433–1416 mg Pb/kg dry soil, 15.7–44.9 mg Cu/kg dry soil and 1718–6050 mg Zn/kg dry soil. Three different uptake-elimination patterns in E. crypticus were found. Both essential elements (Zn and Cu) showed fast increasing internal concentrations reaching equilibrium within 2 d in the uptake phase, without hardly any elimination after transfer to clean soil. The non-essential Cd showed a slow linear accumulation and excretion with body concentrations not reaching steady state within 21 d. Internal Pb concentrations, however, reached equilibrium within 7 d in the uptake phase. Longer exposure times in ecotoxicological tests, therefore, are required for elements like Cd. Porewater pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels were the dominant factors controlling Cd uptake from the test soils. The 21-d body Cd and Pb concentrations were best explained from 0.01 M CaCl2-extractable soil concentrations. Steady-state Cu and Zn body concentrations were independent of soil exposure concentrations. Bioaccumulation factors (BAF) were low for Pb (<0.1 kgsoil/kgworm), but high for Cd at 1.78–24.3 kgsoil/kgworm, suggesting a potential risk of Cd biomagnification in the terrestrial food chain of the mining area ecosystem.

Environmental consequences of dredged-material disposal in a recurrent marine dumping area near to Guadalquivir estuary, Spain

In this study we assessed the effects of the recurrent disposal of dredged material from the Guadalquivir estuary (south-western Spain) in a marine disposal area. We analysed shifts in sediment characteristics as well as bioaccumulation and biomagnification of heavy metals through the benthic food web. Results showed that the significant increase in concentration of some heavy metals observed in the marine disposal area after the latest disposal event could be attributed to the deposition of river-dredged sediments. This increase could also explain the decreased amphipod survival in the ecotoxicology analysis. Heavy metal concentrations in organisms indicated some bioaccumulation in deposit feeders and predators but with no clear patterns nor biomagnification through the food web. Hence, combining studies that monitor shifts in sediment characteristics and their possible consequences for the food web seems to be an interesting approach that should be assessed further in this type of studies.

The content of metals in organisms of various trophic levels in freshwater and brackish lakes on the coast of the sea of Japan.

The content of trace metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu) was examined in water-in the suspended and dissolved forms, in the suspended material and organisms of the food chain-phytoplankton-filter-feeding bivalves (Kunashiria coptzevi, Corbicula japonica) in fresh- and brackish-water lakes of the coast of the Sea of Japan. It was demonstrated that the fresh-water lakes were no different from the brackish-water ones in concentrations of metals in organisms and water. The anthropogenically altered Vaskovskoye Lake is distinguished among the fresh lakes by the elevated concentrations of Pb and Zn in the ecosystem components. Trace metals do not accumulate in the phytoplankton-mollusks food chain: content of Pb decreases while concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Cu do not change practically. This is associated with the low content of heavy metals in water, suspended matter, and suspended organic carbon controlling the filtration rate of organisms.

Distribution and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic organisms of different trophic levels and potential health risk assessment from Taihu lake, China

Aquatic organisms of different trophic levels were taken from Taihu lake. Heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb) were measured in phytoplankton, zooplankton, in two species of zoobenthos, and in eight fish species, as well as in the water column and bottom sediments. Results showed that the concentration of Cu and Zn for all organisms was much higher than for other metals, and Cd was the lowest in all species. Generally, heavy metal concentrations in phytoplankton were higher than in zooplankton. In zoobenthos, the concentration in Bellamya sp.(human edible snail) was higher than that in Corbiculidae (bivalve). Metal concentrations had no significant difference between fish species but tended to be higher in predator fish such as Coilia ectenes and Erythroculter ilishaeformis than in herbivorous fish. The level of measured metals in Taihu fish was moderate-low compared with that of fresh water fishes from international results. Spatially, metal concentrations in organisms were higher in the north and west Taihu lake but lower in south and east lake and this appears to be related to river inputs that are heavily influenced by anthropogenic activities. The bio-concentration factor (BCF) for all aquatic organisms in the food chain indicated that it was generally highest in planktons, followed by zoobenthos, and lowest in fish. Health risk assessment and comparison with national and international standards showed that consumption of aquatic products from the lake was generally safe but fishermen were a higher risk group especially through dietary intake of Bellamya sp.

Freshwater amphipods as biomonitors of metal pollution in surface and interstitial aquatic systems

SUMMARY1. The relationships between levels of metals (Zn, Cu) in the environment (water, sediment) and in the tissues of three species of amphipod crustaceans were investigated in superficial and interstitial ecosystems of the Rivers Rhone and Ain, France.2. Epigean and hypogean amphipods differed in their ability to accumulate Zn and Cu. At all sites, Gammarus fossarum (epigean) showed lower Zn or Cu body concentrations than Niphargus of, rhenorhodanensis or Niphargopsis casparyi (hypogean). Differences were also observed between the two interstitial taxa.3. A significant difference among sites was observed for metal concentrations in sediment. In contrast, no significant inter‐site differences were found for metal concentrations in organisms.4. No significant correlation was found between metal concentrations in the three taxa and quantities of metals in the water. A positive correlation was observed between Zn and Cu body content in Gammarus fossarum and metal level in the sediment. No relationships were found between interstitial amphipods and metal concentrations in the sediment.5. Differences in accumulation rates among the three amphipod species suggest their potential use as biological indicators for monitoring metal pollution.

Heavy metals in sediment cores from a NW Spain estuary.

Core samples have been used to describe the chronology of heavy metal inputs to aquatic systems. Metal concentration profiles have been investigated to detect pollution, to establish when the polluting event started, and to quantify its magnitude relative to [open quotes]precivilization[close quotes] background values. Less frequently, and mainly in studies of coastal systems, the heavy metal nonresidual fraction has been measured to estimate the portion of trace metals potentially available for the biota or remobilization processes, and to assist in identifying the origin of metal inputs. This work is part of a wider study of metal concentrations in organisms and superficial sediments from a small estuary in NW Spain. The aims of this research were to detect any potential pollutant input to the sediments of the estuary, and to establish the influence of postdepositional redistribution on the heavy metal concentrations of oxidized surface sediments. 17 refs., 1 fig.

Review of Heavy Metals in the African Aquatic Environment

Data were compiled from selected heavy metal studies in both freshwater and marine ecosystems from the major African subregions, Northern, West and Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. The concentrations of heavy metals were compared between different environmental compartments (water, sediments, fauna, and flora), between the different African subregions and with data from other areas in the world. Despite the scarcity of the existing information on Africa, some conclusions could be drawn: Metal concentrations in organisms were generally below WHO limits except for some localized sites, mostly with increased lead levels. There were no significant differences between inland water and coastal animals, but shellfish had higher concentrations of most metals than finfish. For aquatic plants the heavy metal levels were higher in inland waters. Compared to more industrialized regions and with the exception of some hot-spot sites, the concentrations of heavy metals in African aquatic systems were low and close to natural background levels. Nevertheless, in view of the expected increase in urbanization and socio-economic activities in Africa, sources and quantities of heavy metal discharges to aquatic environments have to be identified. Also, pollution control measures should be formulated in each country.

Bioconcentration of Cadmium in Aquatic Invertebrates: Geochemical, Physiological and Behavioural Influences

Abstract The geochemical control of cadmium (Cd) availability to invertebrates in lake water is examined. In particular, the influence of lake water acidity on the bioconcentration factors (BCF’s) for Cd in various organisms is investigated. The relationship between BCF and pH is inverse for some organisms and not significantly different than zero for others. This is taken as evidence that factors other than geochemistry influence metal concentrations in organisms. Specific examples of the importance of physiological and behavioural processes are given. The hypothesis that the differences in the relationship between BCF and pH for different organisms is related to surface adsorption of metal is discussed.

Trace metals in selected organisms from the Adriatic sea

Extensive surveys were made to establish the concentrations of several metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu and Hg) in various marine organisms from different parts of the Adriatic Sea in the period from 1979 to 1985. The results obtained are based on analyses which were performed in conjunction with carefully tested procedures. Proper sampling, sample storage, treatment of samples and final analytical determination has excluded artefacts which would influence the accuracy, or cause contamination and/or trace metal losses. The metal concentrations in shellfish from the coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea are in the range of the lowest values obtained for similar organisms from other localities throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Special attention has been paid to the anthropogenic influence on trace metal concentrations in organisms living in the vicinity of domestic sewage and/or industrial waste-water outflows.

Trace metal monitoring of pelagic organisms from the open Mediterranean Sea

During the periods 1974-75 and 1977 mixed microplankton and individual species of macrozooplankton and nekton were sampled from a number of areas in the mediterranean Sea in order to establish baseline levels of selected trace elements in pelagic species from the open Mediterranean. Trace elements analyzed were Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Rb, Sc, Se, V, and Zn. Variability for concentrations of many of the trace elements was high, and broadly speaking if trace element concentrations in all species examined from any one area in the Mediterranean are considered, no general regional differences in element levels were evident. On the other hand, metal concentrations in certain individual pelagic species did suggest limited regional variations. No significant differences between metal concentrations in organisms collected in 1974-75 and 1977 were noted. For most of the elements, similar data for the same species collected in other years do not exist, therefore at present it is not possible to establish temporal trends for metals in pelagic Mediterranean organisms. Comparison of these results with data reported for similar species from other oceanic regions suggests that metal levels in open ocean organisms are no higher in the Mediterranean than elsewhere. It is concluded that long-term, open ocean ecological monitoring programmes, while useful and possible to carry out technically, may be severely limited by the high costs of shiptime and lack of long-term commitment and financial support from both national and international bodies.

Metal-Binding Proteins as Metal Pollution Indicators

The fact that metal-binding proteins are a consequence of elevated metal concentration in organisms is well known. What has been overlooked is that the presence of these proteins provides a unique opportunity to reformulate the criteria of metal pollution. The detoxification effect of metal-binding proteins in animals from polluted areas has been cited, but there have been only very few studies relating metal-binding proteins to pollution. This lack is due partly to the design of most experiments, which were aimed at isolation of metal-binding proteins and hence were of too short duration to allow for correlation to adverse physiological effects on the organism. In this study metal-binding proteins were isolated and characterized from five different marine animals (rock lobster, Jasus lalandii; hermit crab, Diogenes brevirostris; sandshrimp, Palaemon pacificus; black mussel, Choromytilus meridionalis; and limpet, Patella granularis). These animals were kept under identical metal-enriched conditions, hence eliminating differences in method and seasons. The study animals belonged to different phyla; varied in size, mass, age, behavior, food requirements and life stages; and accumulated metals at different rates. It is possible to link unseasonal moulting in crustacea, a known physiological effect due to a metalenriched environment, to the production of the metal-binding protein without evidence of obvious metal body burden. Thus a new concept of pollution is defined: the presence of metal-binding proteins confirms toxic metal pollution. This concept was then tested under field conditions in the whelk Bullia digitalis and in metalenriched grass.

Heavy metal concentrations in organisms from an actively dredged Texas bay.

Organisms from San Antonio Bay have been shown to have low heavy metal concentrations. This is most likely the result of low natural metal levels in the area and minimal man-introduced contamination due to the bay's location far from any dense industrial or population centers. In addition, vigorous shell dredging activity in the bay for more than 50 years has not in any obvious way increased the concentrations of heavy metals in the organisms found there. Analyses have shown that metal concentrations in sediments from depths up to 2 meters (representing several centuries) are both low and uniform (Trefry, 1974). This indicates that the sediments do not represent any unusual metal reservoir for dredging to disturb, and shows that no recent increase in metal input to the bay has occurred. In general, organisms from San Antonio Bay were lower in almost every metal than organisms from other areas where dredging and pollution are thought to be minimal. Molluscs were observed to concentrate metals more than the other organisms studied, but the levels observed are very much lower than those thought to be lethal or toxic (Bowen, 1966). Except for a few large fish, metal concentrations did not correlate significantly with the size or growth stage of the individual. In the fish, certain organs, such as the liver, were found to concentrate metals, in agreement with previous reports.
