Quantifying the mitigating effect of organic matter on heavy metal availability in soils with different manure applications: A geochemical modelling study

Manure is one of the main sources of heavy metal (HM) pollution on farmlands. It has become the focus of global ecological research because of its potential threat to human health and the sustainability of food systems. Soil pH and organic matter are improved by manure and play pivotal roles in determining soil HM behavior. Geochemical modeling has been widely used to assess and predict the behavior of soil HMs; however, there remains a research gap in manure applications. In this study, a geochemical model (LeachXS) coupled with a pH-dependent leaching test with continuously simulations over a broad pH range was used to determine the effects and pollution risks of pig or cattle manure separate application on soil HMs distribution. Both pig and cattle manure applications led to soil pH reduction in alkaline soils and increased organic matter content. Pig manure application resulted in a potential 90.5–156.0 % increase in soil HM content. Cattle manure did not cause significant HM contamination. The leaching trend of soil HMs across treatments exhibited a V-shaped change, with the lowest concentration at pH = 7, gradually increasing toward strong acids and bases. The dissolved organic matter-bound HM content directly increased the HM availability, especially for Cu (up to 8.4 %) after pig manure application. However, more HMs (Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni) were in the particulate organic matter-bound state than in other solid phases (e.g., Fe-Al(hydr) oxides, clay minerals), which inhibited the HMs leaching by more than 19.3 % after cattle manure application. Despite these variations, high HM concentrations introduced by pig manure raised the soil contamination risk, potentially exceeding 40 times at pH ±1. When manure is returned to the field, reducing its HM content and mitigating possible pollution is necessary to realize the healthy and sustainable development of circular agriculture.

Eisenia fetida impact on cadmium availability and distribution in specific components of the earthworm drilosphere.

Although the potential of vermiremediation for restoring metal-contaminated soils is promising, the effects of earthworms on the availability of soil metals are still debatable. Most previous studies considered the soil as a "whole black box." Mobilization or immobilization of metals are affected by earthworm activities within drilosphere hotspots under different soil conditions, which has not been specifically studied. Therefore, an improved 2D terrarium was designed to study the impact of earthworm activities on cadmium (Cd) fate in the drilosphere hotspots (burrow wall soils, burrow casts, and surface casts) of different artificially spiked Cd treatments (CK: 0 mg kg-1; LM: 1 mg kg-1; and HM: 5 mg kg-1) with different organic amendments (2% and 10%). The results revealed that Cd increased earthworm activities with the highest cast production in HM and the highest burrow length in LM. Earthworms exhibited a stronger tendency to reduce total Cd concentration by 4.48-13.58% in casts of LM soils, while 3.37-5.22% in burrow walls under HM treatments. Overall, earthworms could increase the availability of Cd in casts under all conditions (55.46-121.01%). The organic amendments decreased the total Cd concentration and increased the availability of Cd in the disturbed soil. A higher amount of organic amendment significantly decreased total Cd concentration of the drilosphere by 1.16-5.83% in LM and HM treatments, while increasing DTPA-Cd concentrations in all components by 23.13-55.20 %, 14.63-35.11%, and 3.30-11.41% in CK, LM, and HM treatments, respectively, except for earthworm non-disturbed soil and no-earthworm soil in HM treatments. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the moisture, pH, and total carbon contents in soil are the main factors affecting Cd bioavailability. In this study, we decoded the "black box" of soil by making it relatively simple to better understand the effects and mechanisms of earthworm activities on soil metal availability and consequently provided comprehensive insights for using earthworms in soil vermiremediation.

Effects of biosolid biochar on crop production and metal accumulation through a rice-wheat rotation system in fields

ABSTRACT Biosolid-borne heavy metals are the main concern in soils. Therefore, the effects of biosolid biochar application in soils were evaluated in our study through a rice-wheat rotation in fields. The results showed that after the application of biosolid biochar, soil organic matter (SOM), soil pH, and soil total heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb) were significantly increased. But the CaCl2 extracted metals concentrations were decreased, and no significant differences in metal concentrations of soil deeper layers (20–100 cm) were found among different treatments. The Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb concentrations in rice decreased by 13.2%, 37.0%, 9.92%, and 63.0%, respectively, and the concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb in wheat decreased by 20.85%, 19.7%, 48.6%, and 23.6%, respectively, compared with the control treatment. Biosolid biochar can decrease metal availability in soils and increase crop production in fields, thus is suggested to use in fields.

Aerobic and anaerobic burning alter trace metal availability in peat soils: evidence from laboratory experiments

AbstractAs global warming becomes more pronounced, climate change and human activities are leading to frequent peat fire incidents. Fire plays an important role in the environmental distribution of trace metals in peat soils. In the current study, we collected peat soils from six peatlands of the Great Khingan Mountains in Northeast China, where wildfires have often occurred in recent decades. To investigate the transformation of trace metals in peat soils by fire, burning experiments at 250°C (light) or 600°C (severe) and under aerobic (AE, flaming) and anaerobic (AN, smouldering) conditions (AE250, AE600, AN250, AN600) were carried out in the laboratory to investigate the effect of different burning intensities on the distribution of Cu, As, Pb, and Cd in peat soils. The European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method for metal fractions was applied for partitioning four fractions (exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual). The results showed that AE600 significantly decreased the percentages of oxidizable Cu, As, Cd and Pb (Cuoxi, Asoxi Cdoxi and Pboxi) compared with those of the original samples, e.g., Cuoxi decreased from 68.84% ± 12.76% to 15.82% ± 8.02% in peat under moss, which might result from organic matter decrease. Under AN250 conditions, the exchangeable As (Asexc) and Pb (Pbexc) significantly increased by more than twice. Different burning intensities significantly changed the various fractions of Cu, e.g., more than 20% Cuoxi transferred to exchangeable and reducible fractions as the temperature increased. Most of the available fractions of As transformed to residual As after burning. Our study suggests that the AE600 treatment increased the ecotoxicity and bioavailability of Cu, Pb and Cd in peat soils, while AN250 burning decreased the potential ecotoxicity of Cu, As, and Pb. Compared with lower temperature flaming burning (AE250), the ecotoxicity and bioavailability of Cu and Pb were greater in high temperature (AE600) conditions. Smouldering fires at both temperatures (AN250 and AN600) maintained a high potential ecotoxicity and bioavailability of Cu and Pb in peat soils.

Paper Mill Biosolids and Forest-Derived Liming Materials Applied on Cropland: Residual Effects on Soil Properties and Metal Availability

Combined paper mill biosolids (PB) and forest-derived liming by-products improve soil properties, but their residual effects following several years of application have hardly been investigated. A 13-year (2009–2021) field study was initiated at Yamachiche, QC, Canada, to assess the residual effects of PB and liming materials on the properties of a loamy soil. The PB was applied during nine consecutive years (2000–2008) at 0, 30, 60, and 90 Mg wet·ha−1, whereas the 30 Mg PB·ha−1 rate also received one of three liming materials (calcitic lime, lime mud, wood ash) at 3 Mg wet·ha−1. No amendment was applied during residual years. Past liming materials continued to increase soil pH but their effect decreased over time; meanwhile, past PB applications caused a low increase in residual soil NO3-N. Soil total C, which represented 40% of added organic C when PB applications ceased, stabilized to 15% after six years. Soil Mehlich-3-extractable contents declined over the thirteen residual years to be not significant for P, K, and Cu, while they reached half the values of the application years for Zn and Cd. Conversely, Mehlich-3 Ca was little affected by time. Therefore, land PB and liming material applications benefited soil properties several years after their cessation.

Biochar application on heavy metal immobilization in unsaturated soil with vegetation: a review

ABSTRACT Biochar, a type of soil amendment, is widely used in heavy metal–polluted soil. It is also effective in enhancing plant performance. However, how biochar affects the soil heavy metal toxicity considering the plant–soil interactions is not well summarized. Therefore, this paper aims to review and summarize the effects of biochar on heavy metal availability in vegetated unsaturated soil. First, this review summarizes the effects of biochar on key parameters of unsaturated soil, including pore size distribution, water permeability, water retention curve, nutrient cycling and soil biota. Then, the mechanism of biochar for managing heavy metals in soil with vegetation is discussed, with a focus on both physical and biochemical aspects. Additionally, the impact of biochar-induced plant growth on the availability of heavy metals in the plant–soil system is explored. Finally, suggestions for future research and applications of biochar are provided. This paper supplies novel outlooks for further study and practice.

The Effect of Microplastics-Plants on the Bioavailability of Copper and Zinc in the Soil of a Sewage Irrigation Area.

It is essential to understand the occurrence from and plant bioavailability of soil microplastics to heavy metals in soils to assess their environmental fate and risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different microplastic concentrations on the bioavailability of copper and zinc in soil. The relationship between the availability of heavy metals in soil assessed by chemical methods (soil fractionation) and the bioavailability of copper and zinc assessed by biological methods (accumulation in maize and cucumber leaves) in relation to the concentration of microplastics. The results showed that copper and zinc in soil shifted from stable to effective fraction with increasing polystyrene concentrations, which would increase the toxicity and bioavailability of heavy metals. When the concentration of polystyrene microplastics increased, copper and zinc accumulation in plants increased, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b decreased, and malondialdehyde increased. It is shown that the addition of polystyrene microplastics promoted the toxicity of copper and zinc and inhibited plant growth.

Potential of Intercropping Pennisetum purpureum Schum with Melia azedarach L. and Broussonetia papyrifera for Phytoremediation of Heavy-metal Contaminated Soil around Mining Areas

In order to study the potential of intercropping Pennisetum purpureum Schum with Melia azedarach L. and Broussonetia papyrifera for phytoremediation of heavy-metal contaminated soil around mining areas, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of intercropping on plant biomass, heavy metal accumulation, dynamic changes in heavy metal content in soil solution, and response characteristics of the rhizosphere microbial community. The results indicated that the shoot biomass of P. purpureum and M. azedarach from their intercropping system (KX) was increased by 26.5% and 13.2%, respectively, and the shoot biomass of B. papyrifera from the intercropping system of P. purpureum and B. papyrifera (GX) was increased by 13.5% compared with their corresponding monoculture systems. The shoot Cd content of M. azedarach in the KX treatment was significantly increased by 24.9% (P<0.05), and their Cd and Pb accumulation in shoots were also significantly increased. The shoot contents and accumulations of Cd and Pb from P. purpureum in the GX treatment were significantly increased; however, those in B. papyrifera shoots were decreased. The total accumulations of Cd and Pb in each pot from intercropping systems were higher than that from the monoculture treatment, with that from the KX treatment being the highest at 1065 μg·pot-1. During the 150-day cultivation process, the pH value and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in the soil solution under the intercropping systems of KX and GX were higher than those of original soil (CK). After 150 d cultivation, the DOC contents of the soil solution under the KX and GX treatments were significantly increased by 40.5% and 33.1% in comparison with that under CK (P<0.05), respectively. Compared with those from CK and P. purpureum and B. papyrifera monoculture treatments, the Cd content in soil solution from the KX treatment was significantly decreased by 56.1%, 35.5%, and 46.5%, and that in the GX treatment was decreased by 54.5%, 33.2%, and 44.6% (P<0.05), respectively. The Shannon and Chao1 indices of rhizosphere microorganisms under the intercropping systems were significantly higher than those under CK. The number of unique OTUs in intercropping systems was significantly higher than that in CK and the M. azedarach and B. papyrifera monocultures. Intercropping improved the abundance of dominant bacteria such as Actinobacteriota and Acidobacteriota, and the abundance of Actinobacteriota increased by 31.6%, 20.9%, and 25.3% in the KX treatment and by 32.3%, 21.5%, and 25.9% in the GX treatment, respectively, in comparison with those in CK and the P. purpureum and M. azedarach monocultures. It was concluded that intercropping P. purpureum with wood plants could increase their shoot biomass and the accumulations of Cd and Pb, as well as soil environmental quality, whereas the availability and migration risk of heavy metals in soil were reduced. Moreover, the intercropping of P. purpureum and M. azedarach was more beneficial to the remediation of polymetallic-contaminated soil around mining areas.

Impacts of Biochar and Vermicompost Addition on Physicochemical Characteristics, Metal Availability, and Microbial Communities in Soil Contaminated with Potentially Toxic Elements

In the current work, the effects of biochar, vermicompost, as well as their combined application on ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) were investigated. In this regard, four treatments were performed; among them, treatment A served as a control without additive, treatment B with vermicompost (2%), treatment C with biochar (2%), and treatment D with biochar (2%) plus vermicompost (2%). In addition, the abundance and structure of the AOA and AOB amoA gene were measured using quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing. The relationships between the microbial community, physicochemical parameters, and CaCl2-extractable PTEs were analyzed using the Pearson correlation method. We found that adding biochar and vermicompost promoted the immobilization of PTEs and nitrogen biotransformation. The rational use of biochar and vermicompost is beneficial for the growth of bacterial and fungal communities in soils polluted by PTEs. AOA and AOB amoA genes were stimulated by biochar, vermicompost, and their combination, but their structure was hardly affected.

Impact of Soil Amendment with Biochar on Greenhouse Gases Emissions, Metals Availability and Microbial Activity: A Meta-Analysis

The effect of soil amendment with biochar has been widely evaluated for its effects in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and remediating polluted soils with metals; however, a synergic understanding of the system, including biochar, soil, and microbial activity, is lacking. In this study, a meta-analysis of 854 paired data from 73 studies demonstrate that biochar application in soil affects GHG emissions and soil metal availability. First, several properties of biochar, soil, and microbial activity were considered as parameters in the meta-analysis. Then, the size effect was evaluated using the percentage of change (Pc) as obtained by the meta-analyzed data. Several parameters were related as influencer factors in GHG emissions and soil metal availability. Notably, biochar addition in soil resulted in a significant CO2 increase in emissions, whereas N2O emissions decreased; these results were directly correlated with microbial activity. Although this trend, demonstrated by the data analysis, differs from results of other studies found in the literature, it also emphasized the need for a deep understanding of the effect of biochar addition to soil (properties, nutrients, gas exchange, etc.) and to microorganisms (activity, diversity, etc.). Furthermore, it was also proved, that soil metal concentration decreases significantly when biochar was added (Cd &gt; Zn &gt; Pb &gt; Cu &gt; Fe). According to the results, biochar addition in soils contaminated with Cd and Cu was related to an increase in the microbial activity; while, soils amended with biochar but polluted with Pb, Zn, and Fe presented a higher inhibition effect on microorganisms. To improve the interpretation of soil amendment with biochar, it would be necessary to standardize the form for reporting results, particularly of the microbial activity and GHG emissions, in order to be used for future comparative studies.

Immobilization of trace elements and lettuce growth in soil amended with activated dolomite phosphate rock fertilizers

Activation of low-grade phosphate rocks such as dolomite phosphate rock (DPR) with organic molecules of humic acid (HA) and sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) holds promise for developing slow release P fertilizers. Consequently, activated DPR fertilizers also contains multiple essential plant elements, including P, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Fe, while minimizing leaching losses of nutrients and heavy metals. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine the availability of Ca, Mg, and trace metals in soils applied with activated DPR fertilizers and subsequent response of lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L.) as compared with original DPR and water-soluble P fertilizers including superphosphates (SP) and diammonium phosphates (DAP). Application of activated DPR fertilizers stimulated the uptake of Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, B by lettuce plants relative to original DPR and DAP. Potential toxic elements such as Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cu were mostly immobilized in soil without uptake by lettuce when applied with activated DPRs primarily due to increased soil pH, as compared with water soluble fertilizers such as DAP and SPs. Apparently, the activated DPR fertilizers offer advantages over original DPR materials and water-soluble P fertilizers in providing multiple nutrients with minimal adverse effects on soil and environmental quality.

Performance of ash from Amazonian biomasses as an alternative source of essential plant nutrients: An integrated and eco-friendly strategy for industrial waste management in the lack of raw fertilizer materials

The increasing use of Amazonian biomass as a bioenergy source has contributed to the increased demand for fertilizers and the production of a large amount of ash. In addition to facing the challenges of an insufficient supply of agricultural inputs, the Amazon region has also faced problems in managing industrial wastes, which are not well characterized and for which few recycling options are available. Within this context, this study aimed to expand the knowledge regarding the use of Amazonian biomass ash , for which an integrative system between bioenergy and fertilizer production and waste management was proposed. This study evaluated ash applied as an alternative fertilizer, focusing on the availability and uptake of nutrients and heavy metals in acidic soils and the P dynamics using 31 P-NMR. Three soils with different SOM values were treated with one of three doses of mineral fertilizer, namely, ash (35 Mg ha −1 ), phosphate fertilizer (2 Mg ha −1 ), or a mixture of ash and phosphate (35 and 2 Mg ha −1 , respectively), and Avena sativa was grown to verify plant availability and the treatment effect on growth. The experiment was conducted for 60 d in a growth chamber . The ash application in pure form and mixed with phosphate slightly increased the pH (0.3–0.5 unit) and promoted significant increases in the availability of P (∼212%), Ca (∼165%), Mg (∼110%), and K (∼32%). In SOM-rich soils, the high microbial activity favored the transformation of inorganic P into organic P (2–21%), preventing fixation. The ash applications promoted positive effects on biomass production (∼62%) and increased the uptake of P (∼306%), Ca (∼181%), Mg (∼131%), and K (∼38%). Thus, Amazon biomass ash could be an alternative fertilizer source, representing a sustainable option for local socioeconomic development and the establishment of a circular economy system. • The ash from Amazonian biomass improves the pH of acidic soils. • The biomass ash application increases the availability of macro and micronutrients. • The biomass ash use increases the uptake of macro and micronutrients by plants. • The biomass ash application favors the transformation of inorganic P into organic P. • Ash recycling can be a sustainable and integrative way for soils and waste management.

The Effect of Soil Amendments on Trace Elements’ Bioavailability and Toxicity to Earthworms in Contaminated Soils

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of soil amendments, characterized by different sorption properties, on the effectiveness of trace elements’ (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr) stabilization and bioavailability to earthworms. The study was conducted as a microcosm experiment using soil derived from a heavily contaminated post-industrial area. The Eisenia veneta earthworm was cultured for 4 weeks in soils amended with materials characterized by different properties, origins, and potential effects on limiting the availability of metals in soils: two type of compost (Zabrze compost-ZC; GWDA compost-GC), two types of biosolid (Bełchatów biosolids-BB, Grabów biosolids-GB), calcium phosphate (CP), iron oxide (IO), bentonite (BE), rock waste (RW), and limestone (CC). After the incubation, the biomass and survival numbers of the earthworm species decreased significantly (p &lt; 0.05). The accumulation of metals in the earthworm tissues expressed by the bioaccumulation factor value (BSAF) were dependent on the type of amendment applied to the soil. The highest decrease in the earthworms’ weight and survival rate was caused by compost (72%) and bentonite (33%), while the lowest was caused by the rock waste (10%) and iron oxide (11%). The biosolids exhibited the greatest toxicity, causing the mortality of all the earthworms. The accumulation of metals in earthworm tissues and the BSAF value were dependent on the type of amendment applied to the soil. The BSAF for the contaminated soil by Cd decreased to the greatest extent after the addition of ZC (by 57%), GC (55%), CP (41%), and IO (37%). A similarly positive effect was noted for Pb after IO addition (45% decrease). The Zn, Cr, and Ni concentration in earthworms, contrary to other elements, increased, regardless of the amendment. The results showed that the applied soil amendments were characterized by varying potential for the reduction in the metal bioavailability in the soil, depending on their composition and physicochemical properties. Moreover, earthworms may exhibit a diversified response to soil amendments as a result of the impact of amendment on the metal forms in soils and their direct impact on organisms. Generally, the Cd was easily transferred from the soil into and accumulated in the earthworm tissues. Our study confirms that this element creates the highest risk for the trophic chain in soils affected by the Zn and Pb smelting industry. Moreover, greater Zn supply reduces the accumulation of Cd in animal bodies. This study provides valuable practical knowledge on the short-term biological effects of a range of soil amendments in metal-contaminated soils.

Physicochemical Properties, Metal Availability, and Bacterial Community Structure in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil Immobilized by Nano-Montmorillonite

Montmorillonite has been widely used in remediation of toxic metals. However, for the safety of the soil ecosystem, the impact of this technology on microorganisms is still unclear. Here, the influence of nano-montmorillonite on immobilization, accumulation of cadmium, and microbial activity in a soil–plant system was investigated. The results revealed that the nano-montmorillonite treatments reduced cadmium bioavailability and the uptake by oilseed rape. It was found that the addition of NMMT reduced the toxicity of Cd on soil microorganisms and improved enzyme activity. The nano-montmorillonite stimulated the relative abundance of Proteobacteria that was closely related to nutrient turnover in soil. In addition, the treatment with 0.5% addition of nano-montmorillonite significantly improved the microbial alpha diversity index and enhanced the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Planctomycetes. Thus, certain soil quality recovery occurred after the application of nano-montmorillonite. To successfully combine remediation and microbial effects, 0.5% nano-montmorillonite was recommended to be added to cadmium-contaminated soil to minimize the additional impact on the soil ecosystem.

Evaluation of heavy metal availability in soils near former zinc smelters by chemical extractions and geochemical modelling

Multi-surface modelling (MSM) is an important tool to predict heavy metal partitioning and speciation in soils. However, calcareous clay soils contaminated by smelting activities and mine waste have so far received little attention in MSM studies. In this work, 6 paired soil samples taken nearby former Zn smelters and at further distance were used for quantifying the essential input parameters for MSM including the size of the geochemically reactive pool of heavy metals and the reactivity of soil organic matter (SOM) for metal binding. The reactive heavy metal pool (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in these samples was determined by extracting soil with 0.43 M HNO3 and 0.005 M DTPA. For both extraction methods, the contribution of all heavy metals to their total contents was larger in most of the soil samples taken nearby former Zn smelters than in the paired samples from further distance. Furthermore, the amounts of heavy metals extracted with 0.43 M HNO3 were consistently larger than those extracted with 0.005 M DTPA. The sum of the humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) + hydrophobic organic neutral (HON) fraction varied between 6.2 and 43% of total SOM with an average of 24%, which is at the lower end of what is commonly reported in literature. The lower SOM reactivity might be attributed to a lower humification rate of fresh soil organic matter due to heavy metal contamination. The accuracy of the MSM-predicted predictions of solubility of the heavy metals, especially for Ni and Zn, was higher when the results of the DTPA extraction method were used as model input, than when using the results of the HNO3 extraction method, especially when the soil carbonate content was > 4%. Hence, the measurement of the geochemical reactivity of heavy metals by the 0.005 M DTPA extraction method and the reactivity of SOM enable adequate MSM predictions of the solubility of heavy metals in smelter slag-contaminated calcareous clay soils.

Ammonia level influences the assembly of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia bacterial community in soils under different heavy metal remediation treatments

Heavy metal remediation treatments might influence functional microbial community assembly. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) contributes to the nitrogen retention processes in soil ecosystems. We assumed that remediation might reduce heavy metal toxicity and increase some available nutrients for the DNRA microbes, thus balancing the deterministic and stochastic process for DNRA community assembly. Here, we investigated the process of DNRA bacterial community assembly under different heavy metal remediation treatments (including control, biochar, limestone, rice straw, rice straw + limestone, and biochar + limestone) in an Alfisol soil. The abundance of DNRA bacteria diverged across treatments. The α-diversity of the DNRA bacterial community was correlated with pH, available phosphorus (AP), ammonium (NH4+), and extractable Fe (EFe). Metal Cd and Fe significantly affected the abundance of the nrfA gene. The β-diversity was associated with pH, NH4+, and EFe. Deterministic processes dominantly drove the assembly processes of the DNRA bacterial community. NH4+ level played an essential role in the assembly processes than the other soil physicochemical properties and metal availability. High, moderate, and low levels of NH4+ could advocate stochastic process plus selection, heterogeneous selection to stochastic process, and heterogeneous selection, respectively. Network analysis highlighted a predominant role of NH4+ in regulating DNRA bacterial community assembly. However, the relative abundance of modules and some keystone species also were influenced by pH and EFe, respectively. Therefore, the DNRA bacterial community assembly under different heavy metal remediation treatments in this study was dominantly driven by nitrogen availability. pH, phosphorus, and metal availability were auxiliary regulators on DNRA bacterial community.

Isolation of urease-producing bacteria and removal effect on the Cd and Pb in filtrate

Heavy metal pollution in farmland soil around mining and metallurgical industrial parks in China is serious, which seriously affects crop yields and quality and threatens national public health. As an economic and environmental remediation technology, bioremediation can both reduce the metal availability in soil and decrease the accumulation of heavy metals in plants by using microorganisms. We used urea agar plates to screen and isolate urease-producing bacteria from the rhizosphere soil of agricultural crops in Cd- and Pb-contaminated farmland, and investigated its growth characteristics, the removal effects on Cd and Pb in the solution were also studied. The results showed that three urease-producing bacteria, Bacillus megateriumC6, Bacillus aryabhattaiC14, Bacillus sp.C15 were identified by screening. They had higher ability to produce urease, which were up to 876.1U/mL, 815.4U/mL and 809.3 U/mL, respectively within 24h. By studying the influence of urease-producing bacteria on the concentration of Cd and Pb in the solution, it was found that urease-producing bacteria had certain removal effect on Cd and Pb, and the removal efficiency was 51.9% and 84.1% respectively after 14 days, indicating that the urease-producing bacteria had better removal effect on Pb.

Effects of water salinity on cadmium availability at soil-water interface: implication for salt water intrusion.

Low-lying paddy fields in estuaries can be affected by salt water intrusion; however, it remains unclear how salt water intrusion influences the availability of heavy metals in paddy soil. In this study, batch adsorption and incubation experiments of soil were conducted with different salt water sampled along the estuary to investigate the effects of salt water intrusion on cadmium (Cd) availability. The surface complexation model (SCM) was established to assess the effects of pH on Cd adsorption behavior, which presented typical pH-dependent characteristics. The results of SCM also showed that Cd-chloro complexes became the dominant species when the ionic strength increased. The results of Cd fractions in the incubation experiments revealed a significant increase in dissolved Cd with increasing ionic strength. This may be attributed to the increased point of zero charge (pHpzc) in the presence of salt water with higher salinity, which likely formed more positive charges on soil surfaces, causing an inhibition of Cd adsorption via electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, higher concentrations of Cl- in salt water favored the formation of Cd-chloro complexes, facilitating Cd release from soil particles. This study provides mechanistic insights into the impact of salt water intrusion on Cd availability at the soil-water interface of paddy soil along the estuary.
