Milk somatic cell count affects feed efficiency through increased heat production of lactating dairy cows

The objective was to evaluate the relationships between somatic cell count (SCC) and feed efficiency using the data from two respiration chamber studies using Nordic Red cows (n = 136). The cows were fed ad libitum a total mixed ration (forage: concentrate 45:55 on dry matter (DM) basis) containing 162 and 379 g crude protein and neutral detergent fibre in kg DM, respectively. Average (± SD) DM intake and energy corrected milk (ECM) yield were 23.6 ± 3.4 and 37.7 ± 6.1 kg/d, respectively. Blood samples were collected in one of the studies (n = 86). Feed efficiency was expressed as ECM/DM intake, residual feed intake (RFI) and residual ECM yield (RECM). Feed efficiency decreased significantly with increased SCC irrespective of how the efficiency was expressed. Data from energy metabolism indicated that conversion of dietary gross energy to metabolizable energy (ME) was not influenced by SCC, but the efficiency of ME utilization decreased as a result of increased heat production. Increased heat production might be associated with the greater energy demand for immune function. Blood haptoglobin increased with SCC also indicating the role of immune function in increased heat production. Methane intensity increased by 1.0 g/kg ECM above cut-off value of 47 000 cells/mL. It is concluded that in addition to economic losses and animal welfare issues, increased milk SCC has negative environmental impact.

Efficiency of Utilization of Metabolizable Energy for Carcass Energy Retention in Broiler Chickens Fed Maize, Wheat or a Mixture

The study aimed to quantify carcass fat and protein retention, and the efficiency of carcass energy utilization (Kre) resulting from feeding broiler chickens diets containing wheat, maize or mixtures of both as the major cereal ingredient. The apparent metabolizable energy (AME) of the four cereal samples was determined in adult cockerels. There was a linear (p < 0.001) increase in AME with increasing amounts of maize within the four cereal mixtures, with analyses indicating that the AME of maize was 1.4 MJ/kg greater than that of wheat. A second bioassay with growing chickens was used to determine Kre in each cereal, measured as carcass fat and protein from 7 to 21d age. Increasing proportions of maize resulted in linear increases in carcass fat and energy retained from fat (p < 0.001). However, the carcass protein and energy retained from protein did not follow the same pattern as fat (p = 0.121), but rather decreased numerically (L = 0.032). The Kre tended (p = 0.060) to increase with greater proportion of maize in a linear fashion (L = 0.009). Although AME values of cereals were confirmed to be additive, this could not be confirmed for Kre. This data can be used for optimizing energy utilization models for growing broilers.

Energy requirement for primiparous Holstein × Gyr crossbred dairy cows

Our objective was to estimate the requirements of metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy for the maintenance (NEm) of lactating and dry cows, the efficiency of ME utilization for milk production (kl) and tissue gain (kg), and the use of body energy mobilization for milk production (kt) throughout the lactation of primiparous crossbred Holstein × Gyr cows, using open-circuit respiration chambers. Twenty-nine primiparous Holstein × Gyr crossbred cows with an initial BW averaging 563 ± 40.1 kg and 2.5 ± 0.09 years old were used throughout lactation and dry periods. The cows were kept non-pregnant throughout the study to eliminate possible confounding factors. Apparent digestibility assays, followed by calorimeter measurements, were performed 6 times throughout the lactation period. In the dry-off period, the cows were also evaluated but fed with restricted intake (DMI = 1.1% BW/d) to achieve heat production close to maintenance. After 21 d of diet adaptation, an apparent digestibility assay followed by calorimeter measurements was performed. Parameter estimates for lactation period were obtained by mixed models including lactation stage as repeated measures. For restricted feeding at dry-off and fasting period assays, the requirements were estimated by exponential regression. For whole lactation, the values of MEm and NEm were 0.588 and 0.395 MJ/BW0.75, respectively. The efficiencies klkgkt were 0.672, 0.771, and 0.814, respectively. However, MEm and NEm were higher in early and mid-lactation than late, while kl was higher in early than other lactation stages. Dry and non-pregnant cows had MEm of 0.434 MJ/BW0.75 and NEm of 0.351 MJ/BW0.75 for maintenance level, and MEm of 0.396 MJ/BW0.75 and NEm of 0.345 MJ/BW0.75 for fasting metabolism level and efficiency of ME utilization for maintenance was 0.80. Our findings confirmed that F1 crossbred Holstein × Gyr dairy cows have differences in energy requirement and efficiency throughout the lactation stages, suggesting the use of different values in each stage. The estimated values of energy requirement for maintenance and efficiencies for primiparous lactating crossbred Holstein × Gyr were similar to those reported in the literature in specific studies and requirements systems.

Energy and phosphorus utilization of pulses fed to broiler chickens

Energy and P utilization in faba beans and peas were evaluated in 3 broiler chicken experiments. In Exp. 1, 240 birds were allotted to 5 diets in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor on d 18 post hatching to determine the regression-derived energy utilization of faba beans (FB) and field peas (FP). In each of the respective Exp. 2 and 3, regression-derived P utilization in FB and FP were determined with 162 birds assigned to each of 3 diets in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor on d 19 post hatching. There were 8 replicate cages with 6 birds per cage in Exp. 1, and 6 replicate cages with 9 birds per cage in Exp. 2 and 3. The test ingredients were added to a corn-soybean meal-based diet at 15% or 30% in Exp. 1, whereas FB was included at 21%, 42%, or 63% and FP at 16%, 32%, or 48% in Exp. 2 and 3, respectively. In Exp. 1, the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of gross energy (GE) and the ileal digestible energy (IDE) in the diets decreased linearly (P < 0.01). There was a quadratic response or a linear decrease (P < 0.05) with increasing concentrations of FB or FP, respectively, on the apparent total tract utilization (ATTU) of GE, metabolizable energy (ME), and nitrogen-corrected ME (MEn). The respective IDE, ME, and MEn determined were 2,541, 2,628, and 2,394 kcal/kg DM in FB and 2,254, 2,540, and 2,331 kcal/kg DM in FP. In Exp. 2 and 3, the ileal digestible and retainable P intake were linearly increased (P < 0.01). The estimated true ileal digestibility and true total tract utilization of P in FB were 66.5% and 66.7%, respectively. The respective corresponding values for FP were 73.4% and 73.8%. In conclusion, the information on utilization of energy and P in FB and FP provided could enhance proper diet formulation when using these ingredients.

Amino acid digestibility and net energy concentration in soybean meal for broiler chickens

The objective of this study was to determine coefficient of standardized ileal digestibility (CSID) of amino acids and net energy (NE) concentration of soybean meal (SBM) in broiler chickens. Six SBM originating from different regions in the United States were used in the current study. In experiment (Exp.) 1, a total of 576 birds on d 16 post hatching were allotted to 7 diets consisting of 6 diets containing 440 g/kg of each SBM as the sole source of nitrogen and a nitrogen-free diet. Birds were fed from d 16 to 21 and euthanized for the ileal digesta collection on d 21 post hatching. In Exp. 2, birds were fasted for 12 h on d 17 post hatching. On d 18, birds were divided into an initial (8 birds) and final group (64 birds), and the initial group was euthanized and immediately frozen. The remaining 64 birds were assigned to a basal diet or test diet replacing the basal diet with 200 g/kg of SBM. Experiment 2 lasted 7 d and excreta collection was conducted during the last 3 d. On d 25, birds were euthanized after a 12-h fast, individually weighed, and immediately frozen. The whole frozen intact bird carcass was ground and analyzed for gross energy. Energy retention was estimated as a difference in total body energy between the initial and final groups. In both experiments, the experimental design was a randomized complete block design with body weight as a blocking factor. In Exp. 1, the CSID of several indispensable amino acids in SBM1 was greater (P < 0.05) compared with SBM2, SBM3, and SBM6. In Exp. 2, energy retention was greater (P < 0.05) in the basal diet group, whereas NE for maintenance was lower compared with the test diet group (P < 0.05) resulting in a tendency for greater NE intake in the basal diet group (P = 0.084). Values for metabolizable energy (ME), nitrogen-corrected ME, and apparent total tract utilization of gross energy and nitrogen were greater (P < 0.05) in the basal diet group, however, a statistical difference in NE and dietary NE to ME ratio between the basal and test diets was not observed. In conclusion, different values for CSID of amino acids should be applied when formulating broiler diets containing SBM; furthermore, ME, NE, and NE to ME ratio in SBM were 12.61 MJ/kg dry matter, 8.58 MJ/kg dry matter, and 0.682, respectively.

Effect of multi-enzyme complex and feed form on growth performance, slaughter characteristic, total tract nutrient digestibility, and energy utilization in broiler chickens

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of exogenous multi-enzyme complex and feed form on growth performance, slaughter characteristics, nutrient digestibility, phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) utilization in broilers fed corn–soybean meal diets. A total of 312 male one day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were allocated to 6 dietary treatment groups with 13 replicates (4 birds each) in a 2×3 factorial arrangement of treatments in a randomized design, which includes mash (M) or pellet (P) diets supplemented with three levels of a multi-enzyme complex (0, 125, or 175 mg/kg) for 42 days. The results indicated that the addition of 175 mg/kg multi-enzyme complex to pelleted feeds (P175) significantly increased (p&lt;0.05) the body weight and feed intake of the broilers during the grower period. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly improved (p&lt;0.05) by adding the multi-enzyme complex to the pelleted feeds. The feed form * multi-enzyme interaction was significant on d0-21 for BW and FI and all three periods in FCR (p&lt;0.05). Mash feed decreased the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) ratio compared to that of the pelleted feed, and it was observed that EPEF increased (p&lt;0.05) linearly with an increase in the multi-enzyme complex added to both the mash and pelleted feeds. Although there was no difference among the groups regarding the carcass yield and relative organ weights, the gizzard weight increased significantly in chickens fed with mash feeds (p&lt;0.05). In addition, the difference between treatment groups in terms of total tract nutrient digestibility does not differ (p&gt;0.05) significantly, while the highest (p&lt;0.05) AMEn utilization was found in the P175 group. As a result, the pelleted feed form and the increased level of multi-enzyme supplementation improved the performance and efficiency of broiler production.

Dietary supplementation of ferrous glycinate improves intestinal barrier function by modulating microbiota composition in Cherry Valley ducks.

Ferrous glycinate (Fe-Gly) has been increasingly used as iron fortification in the diets of weaned piglets and broilers, but the effect of Fe-Gly on intestinal barrier function in meat ducks has not been well defined. This study therefore investigated the effect of Fe-Gly on apparent nutrient utilization, hematological indices, intestinal morphological parameters, intestinal barrier function and microbial composition in meat ducks. A total of 672 one-day-old Cherry Valley ducks were randomly divided into 6 treatments (8 replicates for each treatment and 14 ducks for each replicate) and fed diets with 0 (control), 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg/kg Fe-Gly or 120 mg/kg FeSO4 for 35 d. The results showed that diets supplemented with Fe-Gly significantly increased average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), hematocrit (HCT), mean cell volume (MCV), the apparent utilization of dry matter (DM) and metabolizable energy (ME), villus height (VH) and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (V:C) (P < 0.05). Fe-Gly also significantly up-regulated barrier-related genes including zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), zonula occludens-2 (ZO-2), mucin 2 (MUC2) and lysozyme (LYZ) (P < 0.05), and down-regulated the mRNA expression of claudin-2 (CLDN2) and occludin (OCLN) in the jejunum (P < 0.05). The 16S rRNA sequence analysis indicated that the diet with Fe-Gly had a higher relative abundance of Intestinimonas and Romboutsia (P < 0.05), which have an ability to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially butyric acid. It also decreased the relative abundance of pathobiont, including Megamonas, Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group and Plebeius (P < 0.05). Additionally, diets supplemented with 120 mg/kg Fe-Gly significantly increased the apparent utilization of DM and ME (P < 0.05) and decreased the relative abundance of Megamonas_unclassified and Bacteroides_unclassified compared with those fed 120 mg/kg FeSO4 (P < 0.05). These results revealed that diets supplemented with Fe-Gly exerted a potent beneficial effect on physical, chemical, immune and microbial barriers, thereby improving the integrity of the intestinal structure, promoting the digestion and absorption of nutrients to a certain extent, and ultimately elevating the growth performance of ducks.

Internal causality in agri-food Life Cycle Assessments: Solving allocation problems based on feed energy utilization in egg production

Physical allocation in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) should, ideally, be based on underlying causal relationships. While both cause-oriented and effect-oriented causality referred to in LCA literature are forms of external causality, internal causality addresses the actual flow of materials and inputs in a system – in other words, the real behaviour of the system under study. While a number or examples of allocation based on physical causality have been used in poultry LCAs, none of these represent the internal causality (the actual biological processes) in egg production. The current study remedies that gap by proposing such a method. Agri-food LCAs, in particular LCAs of livestock production, were used to identify existing physical allocation approaches consistent with internal causality. The most commonly used approach was found to be based on the allocation of feed energy to support the various physiological functions of the livestock species. A feed energy – Metabolizable Energy (ME) – utilization model for allocation in egg production LCAs is hence similarly proposed. Using the inventory of a previous LCA study of egg production in Canada, allocation ratios for eggs and spent hens were developed. Feed utilization models specific to each unit process were identified. The overall differences between ME utilization (∼95% eggs, 5% spent hens) and gross chemical energy content (92% eggs, 8% spent hens) for allocation were relatively small. Scenario analysis, however, showed that the allocation ratios can be considerably different if the causal relationship is interpreted differently. Differences over ∼20% was seen in a scenario which did not allocate between the co-products of each unit process in the system, but rather to the products at the end of a biological causal chain straddling multiple unit processes. The proposed approach is consistent with the interpretation of LCA as a natural sciences framework, and with the ISO 14044 multi-functionality hierarchy, because it reflects actual biological causality in egg production systems. The study results also underscore that practitioners should not only clearly justify their choice of allocation strategy, but also describe its application in detail, since small differences in methods can result in divergent outcomes.

Effect of sodium sources and exogenous phytase supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and digesta pH of 21-day-old broilers

The effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) and NaCl+sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) and supplemental phytase (0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 FTU/kg) on performance, nutrient digestibility and utilization, and digesta pH of male broiler chickens were investigated in a 2 × 4+1 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design with 6 replicate cages of 8 birds per replicate. Data were analyzed as a 2 × 4 factorial with contrast between the positive control and the diets containing 0 FTU phytase. Phytase supplementation linearly improved (P < 0.05) average body weigh gain (BWG) and feed intake (d 0–14 and 0–21). Apparent jejunal dry matter (DM) digestibility and digestible energy in birds fed diets containing only NaCl increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation whereas quadratic (P < 0.05) effect was observed in birds fed diets containing a combination of NaCl and NaHCO3. Phytase supplementation improved (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) apparent ileal nitrogen and P digestibility. Apparent utilization of DM, nitrogen, energy, and metabolizable energy increased (linear; P < 0.05) with increasing level of phytase supplementation. Apparent P utilization increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) for both sodium sources but calcium utilization only increased (linear; P < 0.05) with the combination of NaCl and NaHCO3. Bone breaking strength (linear and quadratic) and bone ash (linear) increased (P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation. The combination of NaCl and NaHCO3 resulted in lower (P < 0.05) pH of digesta in the proximal ileum whereas the pH of the digesta in the distal ileum (linear) and the average pH of ileal contents (linear and quadratic) increased (P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation. Results from this study showed that birds’ performance and utilization of nutrients and energy by broilers in the presence of phytase was, in general, not influenced by the source of sodium in the diet. Data from this study showed that NaHCO3 can replace a portion of NaCl in the diet of broilers supplemented with phytase without any significant negative effect on performance and that the 2,000 FTU phytase level resulted in better BWG and feed intake as well nutrient and energy utilization.

Comparative evaluation of in vitro techniques for predicting metabolizable energy content of total mixed ration for Murrah buffaloes

The present study was conducted to ascertain the sensitivity of in vitro techniques namely, in vitro gas production (IVGPT) and Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) fraction for predicting the metabolizable energy (ME) content of total mixed ration for Murrah buffaloes. The total mixed ration forming dietary treatment were TMR1, TMR2 and TMR3 having mixture of maize silage and concentrate in ratio of 30:70, 40:60 and 50:50, respectively. The diets formulated were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The in vitro gas production was studied by incubation of diet with rumen liquor as inoculum to predict the metabolizable energy content of ruminant feeds. The CNCPS fraction analysing ME content of feed samples was carried out in laboratory. Lactating Murrah buffaloes (n = 18) having similar lactation yield (MY 9 kg±2.5) were allotted to three groups in a completely randomised design and fed TMR as per the dietary treatments. The feeding trial was carried out for 3 months and nutrient utilization was analysed. The efficiency of ME utilization in vivo were compared to in vitro gas production and CNCPS fraction. Correlation coefficient (r) between in vitro techniques and in vivo trial in evaluating ME content demonstrated a significantly (P&lt;0.01) high correlation of 0.734 with IVGPT and 0.752 with CNCPS fraction indicating that both in vitro techniques were reliable in predicting metabolizable energy content of feedstuffs for ruminant feeding.

Derivation of the maintenance energy requirements and efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for dry and lactating Jersey cows

Maintenance energy is the energy required to conserve the state of an animal when no work is completed. Dietary energy must be supplied to meet maintenance requirements before milk can be produced. The objectives of the current experiment were to quantify the maintenance energy requirement of Jersey cows when lactating or dry. Energetic measures were collected on 8 Jersey cows and evaluated across 3 physiological phases and nutritional planes: lactation, dry cows fed at maintenance, and fasted dry cows. Through total collection of feces and urine as well as using headbox-style indirect calorimeters, energy balance and heat production data were measured across all phases. Lactation data were collected across four 28-d periods. Data for cows fed at maintenance were collected after 14 d and fasting heat production was measured during the last 24 h of a 96-h fast. Net energy for maintenance (NEM) requirements, and the efficiency of converting metabolizable energy (ME) into net energy were compared between lactating and dry (maintenance or fasting phase) cows. Heat production of dry cows fed at maintenance, which represents ME for maintenance, was 0.146 ± 0.0087 Mcal per unit of metabolic body weight (BW0.75, MBW). Fasting heat production, which represents NEM, was 0.102 ± 0.0071 Mcal/MBW. Energy balance was calculated as tissue energy plus milk energy. When estimated via regressing energy balance on ME intake, NEM was not different between dry and lactating cows (0.120 ± 0.32 vs. 0.103 ± 0.0052 Mcal/MBW). However, the slope of the regression of energy balance on ME intake was greater for dry compared with lactating cows (0.714 ± 0.046 vs. 0.685 ± 0.010) when evaluated with a fixed intercept. This suggests that dry cows were more efficient at converting ME into net energy and that the efficiency of utilizing ME for maintenance may be greater than for lactation. Our measurements of NEM and the slope of ME on energy balance were greater than the value used by the National Research Council (2001), which are 0.080 Mcal/MBW for NEM and approximately 0.64 for the slope. Results of this study suggest that NEM and the efficiency of converting ME into NEM of modern lactating Jersey cows are similar to recent measurements on modern Holstein cows and greater than previous measurements.

The effects of gradual replacement of barley with oats on enteric methane emissions, rumen fermentation, milk production, and energy utilization in dairy cows

This study evaluated the effects of gradual replacement of barley with oats on enteric CH4 emissions, rumen fermentation, diet digestibility, milk production, and energy utilization in dairy cows fed a grass silage-based diet. Sixteen lactating Nordic Red dairy cows received a total mixed ration [58:42 forage:concentrate on dry matter (DM) basis]. Grass silage (Phleum pratense) was the sole forage with canola meal (10% of diet DM) as a protein supplement. The effects of gradual replacement of barley with oats on DM basis were evaluated using a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21 d periods. The grain supplements (30% of diet DM) consisted of 100% barley, 67% barley and 33% oats, 33% barley and 67% oats, and 100% oats. In addition to intake, milk production, and digestibility measurements, CH4 emissions were measured by the GreenFeed system (C-Lock Inc.). The energy metabolism was estimated from the gas exchange measurements recorded by the GreenFeed unit. The last 10 d of each period were used for recordings of gas exchanges, feed intake and milk production. Dry matter intake, body weight, milk yield, and energy-corrected milk yield were not affected by gradual replacement of barley with oats in the diet. Increased inclusion of oats linearly decreased CH4 emissions from 467 to 445 g/d, and CH4 intensity from 14.7 to 14.0 g/kg energy-corrected milk. In addition, the ratio of CH4 to CO2 decreased with increasing inclusion of oats in the diet. Digestibility of organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, and potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber decreased linearly with increasing inclusion of oats. Increased inclusion of oats linearly increased fecal energy from 121 to 133 MJ/d, whereas urinary energy and heat production were not affected by dietary treatment. This resulted in a linear decrease in metabolizable energy intake. However, increased levels of oat in the diet did not significantly affect energy balance or efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for lactation. This study concludes that barley could be replaced with oats in the diet of dairy cows fed a grass silage-based diet to mitigate CH4 emissions without having any adverse effects on productivity or energy balance. However, the effect of replacing barley with oats on CH4 emissions is dependent on the differences between barley and oats in the concentrations of indigestible neutral detergent fiber and fat.

Residual carbon dioxide as an index of feed efficiency in lactating dairy cows

High feed costs make feed conversion efficiency a desirable target for genetic improvement. Residual feed intake (RFI), calculated as the difference between observed and predicted intake, is a commonly used estimate of feed efficiency. However, determination of feed efficiency in dairy herds is challenging due to difficulties in measuring feed intake of individual animals reliably. Using residual CO2 (RCO2) production as an estimate of feed efficiency would allow ranking the cows according to feed efficiency, provided that CO2 production is closely related to heat production and feed intake. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of RCO2 as an index of feed efficiency using data from respiration calorimetry studies (289 cow per period observations). Heat production was precisely predicted from CO2 production [root mean square error (RMSE)] adjusted for random effects was 1.5% of observed mean]. Dry matter intake (DMI) was better predicted from energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield and CO2 production than from ECM yield and body weight in the model (adjusted RSME = 0.92 vs. 1.39 kg/d). Residual CO2 production estimated as the difference between actual CO2 production and that predicted from ECM yield, metabolic body weight was closely related to RFI (adjusted RMSE = 0.42) that was calculated as the difference between actual DMI and that predicted from ECM, metabolic body weight, and energy balance (EB). When the cows were categorized in 3 groups of equal sizes on the basis of RCO2 (low, medium, and high), low RCO2 cows had lower DMI, RFI, methane production and intensity (g/kg ECM), and heat production, but higher efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for lactation than high RCO2 cows. When RFI was predicted from RCO2, the residuals (observed - predicted) were negatively related to EB and digestibility. Predicting RFI with a 2-variable model based on RCO2 and digestibility, adjusted RMSE decreased to 0.23 kg/d, and residuals were not significantly related to EB. The cows in low RCO2 group had a higher energy digestibility than the cows in the high RCO2 group, and differences in EB were observed between the groups. Error of the model predicting residual ECM production from RCO2 was 1.41 kg/d. The residuals were positively related to ECM yield and energy digestibility. Predicting residual ECM from RCO2 and ECM yield decreased adjusted RMSE to 1.07 kg/d, and further to 0.78 kg/d when digestibility was included in the 2-variable model. It is concluded that RCO2 has a potential for ranking individual cows based on feed efficiency.

Owing to paucity of information on the energy requirements of lactating cows in a humid tropical environment, a study using twelve lactating cows and Six steers was conducted at Ibadan, Nigeria. Animals weighing between 355 and 445kg were used in metabolism studies with four cows and two steers from each of the White Fulani (WF), German Brown (GB) and Friesian (F) breeds. Metabolizable energy (ME) required for maintenance ranged from 0.37 for the Friesiun, 0.41 for the German Brown to 0.44 MJ/day/W0.734kg for the White Fulani animals. Since the regressions were parallel and coincident, pooled figures of 0.41MJ ME/day/W0.734kg or 0.31MJ net energy ME/day/wk0.734g for all breeds in a tropical environment could be used. Efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy for milk synthesis was about 31%. while a large variation was obtained for efficiency of utilization of the diets fed forage (18%), low concentrate (32%, and high concentrate (44%). Lactating cows required lower maintenance but higher productive metabolizable energy than those in the temperate regions.

Maintenance energy requirement and efficiency of utilisation of metabolisable energy for milk production of

Context Dairy consumption has the ability to provide nutrient dense food in low-income countries. However, cows in the tropics may not be able to reach their full potential due to poor nutrition. In tropical regions, milk is mostly produced by Bos taurus × Bos indicus crossbred cattle for which no nutrient requirement tables have been fully developed. Although many novel feeds and feed additives have been tested, nutrient requirements specifically targeting energy and protein for these livestock need to be estimated accurately for milk production to increase sustainably. Aims To determine the net energy for lactation (NEL) requirement for maintenance and efficiency of utilisation of metabolisable energy intake (MEI) for milk production (kL) of Bos taurus × Bos indicus crossbred dairy cows in the tropics. Methods A meta-analysis using 141 observations from 38 independent studies in tropical regions with crossbred dairy cows was conducted. The energy produced in milk corrected for zero energy balance (EL0) was regressed by MEI including other covariates. This meta-regression analysis was conducted by frequentist inference via optimisation in RStan. Key results The best-fit model contained only MEI as a covariate. This model predicted a net energy for lactation value at maintenance of 0.323 MJ/kg BW0.75.day (s.e. = 0.0004) with variations for each specific study. The efficiency with which MEI is used for milk production was estimated to be 0.554 (s.e. = 0.00008), which was common for all studies. Conclusion The key energy parameters estimated in this study should replace commonly used values derived from Bos taurus breeds when formulating diets for crossbred tropical cattle. Implications Nutritional requirement tables need to be estimated specifically for Bos taurus × Bos indicus crossbred dairy cows as their requirements differ from Western breeds. Using appropriate nutritional requirements of crossbred cattle would lead to better nutrition and increased production as determined by their genetic merit.

Dietary Supplementation of ε-Polylysine Beneficially Affects Ileal Microbiota Structure and Function in Ningxiang Pigs.

Intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the health of animals. However, little is known about the gut microbiota in Ningxiang pigs. Thus, we investigated how dietary supplementation with different ε-polylysine concentrations (0, 20, 40, 80, and 160 ppm) affected the ileal microbiota in Ningxiang pigs using a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square method. Each experimental period included 10 days for diet adaptation, 3 days for feces collection and 2 days for digesta collection. The ileal contents were collected and used for sequencing of the V3–V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. The results revealed that ε-polylysine significantly decreased the digestibility of crude protein and crude fiber, as well as the utilization of metabolizable energy (P < 0.05). The relative abundances of 19 bacterial genera significantly increased, while those of 26 genera significantly decreased (P < 0.05). In addition, ε-polylysine increased the abundance of some bacteria (e.g., Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium, and lactic acid bacteria) and inhibited some other bacteria (e.g., Micrococcaceae, Acinetobacter, Anaerococcus, Peptoniphilus, Dehalobacterium, Finegoldia, Treponema, and Brevundimonas). Furthermore, based on the 16S rRNA gene data and data from the precalculated GreenGenes database, bacterial communities in the ileal contents exhibited enhanced functional maturation, including changes in the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids (e.g., alanine, lysine, tryptophan, cysteine, and methionine), cofactors, and vitamins (e.g., biotin, thiamine, and folate), as well as in the activity of the insulin signaling pathway. This study suggests that ε-polylysine may influence the utilization of feed nutrients by Ningxiang pigs, including proteins, lipids, metabolizable energy, and fiber, by regulating the gut microbiota.

Variation in the chemical composition and the nutritive quality of different field bean UK-grown cultivar samples for broiler chicks

ABSTRACT 1. The chemical composition and physical characteristics of 10 different UK-grown field bean cultivar samples from the same harvest year were determined. 2. Diets included each bean sample at a level of 200 g/kg, and were used to compare broiler growth performance and determine N-corrected apparent metabolisable energy (AMEn) and nutrient utilisation. The AMEn and nutrient retention coefficients for the bean samples were obtained via the slope-ratio method. The relationships were examined between variation in nutritive value for broilers and the laboratory analysis of the bean samples. 3. The data showed significant differences (P < 0.05) among the bean cultivar samples for feed conversion ratio, AMEn and dry matter retention (DMR) coefficients. Further analysis showed that the feeding quality of different field bean cultivar samples, measured as AMEn, was highly correlated to crude protein (CP) (P < 0.05) and colour (P < 0.001) of the samples. Thus, beans with higher CP and pale colour had superior feeding value for broilers.

Feeding behavior, water intake, and energy and protein requirements of young Nellore bulls with different residual feed intakes.

This study aimed to determine feeding behavior, water intake (WI), and energy requirements of high- and low-residual feed intake (RFI) Nellore bulls. Data were collected from 42 weaned Nellore bulls (initial body weight [BW] 260 ± 8.1 kg; age 7 ± 1.0 mo) housed in a feedlot in group pens that contained electronic feeders, waterers, and a scale connected to the waterers. The individual dry matter intake (DMI), WI, and BW were recorded daily. The indexes of average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (gain to feed ratio), and RFI were calculated based on the data collected. The number of feeder and waterer visits and the time spent feeding or drinking water per animal per day were recorded as feeding behavior measures. Energy requirements for maintenance and gain were calculated according to the BR-CORTE system. Low-RFI bulls had lower DMI (P < 0.01) than high-RFI bulls, and no differences (P > 0.05) were observed between the two groups regarding WI, performance, and feeding behavior measurements. The net energy requirements for maintenance, metabolizable energy for maintenance, and efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization were 63.4, 98.6 kcal/metabolic empty body weight (EBW)0.75 daily, and 64.3%, respectively, for low-RFI bulls, and 78.1, 123.9 kcal/EBW0.75 daily, and 63.0%, respectively, for high-RFI bulls. The equations obtained for net energy for gain (NEg) were: NEg (Mcal/EBW0.75) daily = 0.0528 × EBW0.75 × EBG0.5459 for low-RFI and 0.054 × EBW0.75 × EBG0.8618 for high-RFI bulls, where EBG is the empty body gain. We did not observe any difference (P > 0.05) regarding the composition of gain in terms of protein or fat deposition between the two groups. Both groups also presented similar (P > 0.05) carcass and non-carcass traits. Therefore, our study shows that low-RFI Nellore bulls eat less, grow at a similar rate, and have lower maintenance energy requirements than high-RFI bulls. We also suggest that the lower feed intake did not compromise the carcass traits of more efficient animals, which would reduce production costs and increase the competitiveness of the Brazilian beef sector on the world market.

The effects of energy metabolism variables on feed efficiency in respiration chamber studies with lactating dairy cows

The objective of the present study was to investigate factors related to variation in feed efficiency (FE) among cows. Data included 841 cow/period observations from 31 energy metabolism studies assembled across 3 research stations. The cows were categorized into low-, medium-, and high-FE groups according to residual feed intake (RFI), residual energy-corrected milk (RECM), and feed conversion efficiency (FCE). Mixed model regression was conducted to identify differences among the efficiency groups in animal and energy metabolism traits. Partial regression coefficients of both RFI and RECM agreed with published energy requirements more closely than cofficients derived from production experiments. Within RFI groups, efficient (Low-RFI) cows ate less, had a higher digestibility, produced less methane (CH4) and heat, and had a higher efficiency of metabolizable energy (ME) utilization for milk production. High-RECM (most efficient) cows produced 6.0 kg/d more of energy-corrected milk (ECM) than their Low-RECM (least efficient) contemporaries at the same feed intake. They had a higher digestibility, produced less CH4 and heat, and had a higher efficiency of ME utilization for milk production. The contributions of improved digestibility, reduced CH4, and reduced urinary energy losses to increased ME intake at the same feed intake were 84, 12, and 4%, respectively. For both RFI and RECM analysis, increased metabolizability contributed to approximately 35% improved FE, with the remaining 65% attributed to the greater efficiency of utilization of ME. The analysis within RECM groups suggested that the difference in ME utilization was mainly due to the higher maintenance requirement of Low-RECM cows compared with Medium- and High-RECM cows, whereas the difference between Medium- and High-RECM cows resulted mainly from the higher efficiency of ME utilization for milk production in High-RECM cows. The main difference within FCE (ECM/DMI) categories was a greater (8.2 kg/d) ECM yield at the expense of mobilization in High-FCE cows compared with Low-FCE cows. Methane intensity (CH4/ECM) was lower for efficient cows than for inefficient cows. The results indicated that RFI and RECM are different traits. We concluded that there is considerable variation in FE among cows that is not related to dilution of maintenance requirement or nutrient partitioning. Improving FE is a sustainable approach to reduce CH4 production per unit of product, and at the same time improve the economics of milk production.

Intensification of cow-calf production: How does the system respond biologically to energy inputs in a long-term horizon?

In southern Brazil, beef cattle production systems generally rely on grazing on natural pastures. However, their forage production, and consequently metabolizable energy (ME) production, is seasonal and influenced by climatic events. Thus, there is a scientific and commercial interest in evaluating and understanding the biological impacts of intensification using pasture irrigation and the effects of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena on the long term on the productivity of cow-calf systems. Therefore, our objective was to develop a simulation model to evaluate the effects of intensification levels, using cultivated pastures and irrigation, on the productivity and on the efficiency metabolizable energy utilization of beef cow-calf systems in a 10-year horizon. This period allows capturing the effects of several production cycles as influenced by ENSO events. The model includes three submodels: herd structure, herd ME requirements, and forage ME production. The results of the present study demonstrate that the proposed model is able to evaluate the influence of intensification of grazing systems on metabolizable energy production, carrying capacity, productivity and biological efficiency of beef cow-calf systems over a long-term horizon. Productivity was increased in 15.9% when 20% of the grazing area was intensified and irrigated compared with the modeled non-intensified system, independently of climatic events. The main productive response was the increase in the number of dams in the herd, especially as a result of the use of irrigation. This study proposes different alternatives for increasing the productivity of beef cow-calf systems in southern Brazil.
