Guangfu Cultural Inheritance Under Digital Media: Design Practice and Cultural Communication of Cantonese Dialect Emoticons

With the rapid development of digital technology, social media and instant messaging tools have become an indispensable part of people s daily life. As an emerging visual language, emoticons have not only enriched people s communication methods, but also become an important carrier of cultural communication. How Guangfu culture, especially the Cantonese dialect, as an important cultural symbol in southern China, can be effectively inherited and disseminated in digital media has become a topic worth exploring. In this paper, we will discuss the design practice of Cantonese dialect emoticons and their role in cultural communication for reference.

Does the use of mobile instant messaging in the workplace increase employees’ workload?

ABSTRACT Introduction The impact of instant messaging (IM) tools on employee workload is a concern in both academic and professional contexts. Despite the widespread use of mobile instant messaging (MIM) and its challenges for organizations, research on this topic remains limited. Objective This study aims to explore the mediating roles of interactivity and job interruption, and the moderating role of communication quality, in the relationship between MIM use and perceived workload, using the job demands-resources model, distraction-conflict theory, and media synchronicity theory. Method A total of 235 employees completed self-report questionnaires measuring MIM use, interactivity, job interruption, perceived workload, and communication quality. Results The study found that MIM use has indirect effects on perceived workload. While MIM usage increases interactivity, reducing perceived workload, it also increases job interruptions, leading to a higher perceived workload. Mediation analysis showed that both job interruption and interactivity mediate the MIM use-workload relationship. Furthermore, communication quality weakens the negative impact of interactivity on perceived workload and the positive impact of job interruption on perceived workload. Conclusion These findings challenge the belief that IM is solely disruptive in the workplace, highlighting the importance of communication quality for effective management. This enhances our understanding of MIM's role in corporate and personal productivity.

Online collaborative research on seasonal work. Collective capabilities to resist on precarious work and living conditions.

The number of seasonal workers in the agricultural sector in France is increasing and their working conditions are difficult and disgraceful. While they have been shown in various studies to be subject to processes that result in them being unable to act on occupational health, some of them, mobilized online, have formed a collective whose is permitted them to develop collective actions. Our article aims to describe this online collective and how the power to act emerged from the discussions. The purpose it's also to determine how the functioning of these groups fosters the expression of a collective point of view and the achievement of goals that is not attained elsewhere. We carried out a collaborative research online with a collective of seasonal workers, which consisted in following and taking part in discussions about conditions at work and outside of work, using an instant messaging tool. The results of this collaborative research, included testimonies registration and co-produced with seasonal workers, has been analyzed mobilizing A. Sen's capabilities approach. During their online discussions, the seasonal workers allow themselves to share the situations of injustice they are subject to with the other members. Here, we present their output and collective actions which were made possible by the mobilization of the resources of some of their members or by collaborating with other actors. In spite of the remarkable conversion factors made available through this collective action online, certain "failures" show that in order for these workers to have better access to their rights, effective support by public policy is indispensable.

A comparative analysis of learning techniques in the context of Turkish spam detection

Short Message Service (SMS) is a mobile messaging tool used by billions of people to communicate via a mobile phone. However, due to the lack of proper message filtering techniques, this form of communication is vulnerable to unwanted and junk messages. This paper compared SMS spam detection approaches based on machine learning methods such as Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Multinominal Naïve Bayes (MNB), Logistic Regression (LR), and Support Vector Machines (SVM) and deep learning methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) in terms of f-score, accuracy, recall, precision, and a confusion matrix constructed for each strategy. The study tested two different preprocessing methods on two different Turkish SMS datasets to evaluate the approaches. The aim of this study is to contribute to the issue of spam filtering in Turkey. The results indicate that the highest accuracy values were achieved with Support Vector Machine (99.03%) using the first preprocessing method and Logistic Regression and Random Forest (98.07%) using the second preprocessing method on the BigTurkishSMS dataset, a combination of the two datasets used. As is the case with the majority of machine learning algorithms, the second preprocessing of the data set yielded superior results in deep learning models. The ANN model achieved the highest accuracy, with a score of 97.41%. The study employed a comparison of machine learning and deep learning techniques on Turkish SMS datasets, which will provide valuable insights for researchers working in this field.

Development of an Electronic Health Record Self-Referral Tool for Lung Cancer Screening: One-Group Posttest Study.

Approximately 14 million individuals in the United States are eligible for lung cancer screening (LCS), but only 5.8% completed screening in 2021. Given the low uptake despite the potential great health benefit of LCS, interventions aimed at increasing uptake are warranted. The use of a patient-facing electronic health record (EHR) patient portal direct messaging tool offers a new opportunity to both engage eligible patients in preventative screening and provide a unique referral pathway for tobacco treatment. This study sought to develop and pilot an EHR patient-facing self-referral tool for an established LCS program in an academic medical center. Guided by constructs of the Health Belief Model associated with LCS uptake (eg, knowledge and self-efficacy), formative development of an EHR-delivered engagement message, infographic, and self-referring survey was conducted. The survey submits eligible self-reported patient information to a scheduler for the LCS program. The materials were pretested using an interviewer-administered mixed methods survey captured through venue-day-time sampling in 5 network-affiliated pulmonology clinics. Materials were then integrated into the secure patient messaging feature in the EHR system. Next, a one-group posttest quality improvement pilot test was conducted. A total of 17 individuals presenting for lung screening shared-decision visits completed the pretest survey. More than half were newly referred for LCS (n=10, 60%), and the remaining were returning patients. When asked if they would use a self-referring tool through their EHR messaging portal, 94% (n=16) reported yes. In it, 15 participants provided oral feedback that led to refinement in the tool and infographic prior to pilot-testing. When the initial application of the tool was sent to a convenience sample of 150 random patients, 13% (n=20) opened the self-referring survey. Of the 20 who completed the pilot survey, 45% (n=9) were eligible for LCS based on self-reported smoking data. A total of 3 self-referring individuals scheduled an LCS. Pretest and initial application data suggest this tool is a positive stimulus to trigger the decision-making process to engage in a self-referral process to LCS among eligible patients. This self-referral tool may increase the number of patients engaging in LCS and could also be used to aid in self-referral to other preventative health screenings. This tool has implications for clinical practice. Tobacco treatment clinical services or health care systems should consider using EHR messaging for LCS self-referral. This approach may be cost-effective to improve LCS engagement and uptake. Additional referral pathways could be built into this EHR tool to not only refer patients who currently smoke to LCS but also simultaneously trigger a referral to clinical tobacco treatment.

The Effects of WeChat-Based Teach-Back Health Education on Patients With Advanced Cancer Pain.

Providing effective health education is essential for patients with cancer-related pain. One solution is leveraging instant messaging tools for teach-back health education. This study investigated the effects of WeChat-based teach-back health education on patients with advanced cancer who underwent patient-controlled intrathecal analgesia implantation and used hydromorphone. This retrospective study evaluated 150 hospitalized patients with advanced cancer pain. Patients were classified into a conventional health education group (N = 50) and a teach-back group (N = 100) based on whether they received WeChat-based teach-back health education. Pain was rated using a numeric rating scale, and sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index at one, two, and three months postdischarge. Patients who received remote teach-back health education better managed their pain. Data also demonstrated improvements in patients' sleep quality and caregiver satisfaction, and reductions in the occurrence of adverse reactions.

Introduction. The article is devoted to the study of the methods of committing crimes provided for inArticle 137 of the Penal Code of the Russian Federation. Special attention is paid to the influence of information technology on the formation of individual criminal behavior: the choice of ways to commit crimes that violate privacy (in 2020-2021, 87% of cases are accounted for by information technology). A significant factor in the analysis of crimes violating privacy is the change in the statistical accounting of the methods of committing crimes: since 2022, the forms of federal statistical observation reflect the methods of committing crimes in the field of information and telecommunications technologies provided for in Part 3 of Article 137 of the Penal Code of the Russian Federation. Methods: The research methodology consists of general scientific methods of cognition of social processes, in particular, the socio-legal phenomenon of crime (analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction, system-structural method, measurement, description, abstraction), as well as private scientific methods - document analysis, statistical methods. As an empirical base, separate forms of statistical observationof theFederal State Institution “Main Information and Analysis Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation”,information from the Internet resource “Judicial and Regulatory Acts of the Russian Federation”, as well as information from other online publications were used. Results: In this article, individual ways of violating privacy are selected as the subject of study due to their significant diversity. In particular, the following methods of committing crimes, confirmed by statistical data, were considered: the Internet, social networks, computer equipment, instant messaging tools, mobile communication tools, software tools.

A comprehensive review study of cyber terrorism and novel developments in the current scenario

Development of an Automated Message Writing Tool Assisted by Artificial Intelligence to Facilitate Communication between Students and Lecturers

This research project presents the development of Pesani, an innovative automatic messaging tool that harnesses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to offer suggestions on grammar, vocabulary, and writing style within messages. Pesani’s primary objective is to enhance communication between students and lecturers participating in language literacy courses. The development process followed a well-structured Research and Development (R&D) methodology that incorporated iterative cycles to refine the tool. To ensure Pesani’s efficacy and relevance, the research team collaborated closely with subject matter experts and media specialists. Their input was invaluable in shaping Pesani into a tool that not only functioned effectively but also met its users’ specific needs. Validation conducted by subject matter and media experts has shown that Pesani is exceptionally well suited for its intended purpose. Furthermore, limited testing involving students has demonstrated that Pesani is highly effective in facilitating communication between students and professors. These results underscore Pesani’s potential as an innovative solution to significantly enhance communication and improve student learning outcomes in language literacy courses.

PRAGMATIC, SUSTAINABLE, AND COST-FEASIBLE TECHNOLOGIES TO ENABLE REMOTE CARE COORDINATION SERVICES

Abstract The aim of this presentation is to communicate the approach and lessons learned in successfully deploying open source smart home and consumer-grade technologies to enable novel remote care coordination services for older adults as part of the CMS-funded ASSETs for Aging in Place demonstration project. Major barriers to use of technologies that enable service reach to rural or home-bound at-risk populations are technology availability, internet connectivity, cost, configuration, installation, ease of management, and usability and usefulness of clinically relevant data displays for decision-making to support personalized care coordination, coaching, and self-management goals. We have pioneered a reusable, innovative approach and infrastructure through partnership with the State of Missouri Department of Social Services and a non-profit hosting partner that facilitates testing and deployment of such remote services with broad goals of scalability and translation as starting principles. The specific focus of this presentation will describe technology selection, configuration, proof-of-concept testing, use of mobile hot spots to overcome broadband availability in rural areas, team composition and skills, introduction and training of the OT/Nurse/Social Worker teams to technology, resources required to stand up the team and transition to independent technology expertise in the field with mobile, video, and remote messaging tools, and user-centered design engagement of the care coordination and informatics teams to drive dashboard features and visual display developments for new work flows. An overview of the approach, technologies, and practical considerations to support research and development of new technology-enabled services for older adults will be presented.

FC3: “Empowering Health & Social Service Providers in Addressing Social Isolation & Loneliness in Older Adults”

“Social isolation among older adults is associated with increased change of premature death; depression; dementia, disability from chronic diseases; poor mental health; increased use of health and support services; reduced quality of life; poor general health; and an increased number of falls.” (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2020).Without question, the global pandemic has significantly exacerbated both the prevalence and awareness of social isolation and loneliness as a growing health and societal challenge for older populations.“Because of growing calls for Canada’s health-care systems to identify, prevent and mitigate loneliness as part of COVID-19-related public health efforts, there is a unique opportunity to build capacity to identify and intervene with older adults who are experiencing social isolation or loneliness.” National Institute on Aging (2022).Over the past two decades, the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH) has developed a number of internationally recognized clinical guidelines in support of mental health for older adults. CCSMH is responding to the growing mental health crisis of isolation and loneliness with the development of evidence-based guidelines, to support the vital work of health and social service providers across Canada. The focus of these guidelines is to develop a broad range of evidence-based, manageable, and stepped care approaches to identify and address social isolation and loneliness in older adults. It is recognized that this topic is extremely complex and vast in potential scope. Through the guidance of a national working group of experts, these guidelines will draw upon both academic and grey literature, as well as on the experience of a diversity of health and social service providers, older adults, and their caregivers. This project will also provide guidance, promoting wellness and reducing the risk of social isolation with targeted messaging, knowledge translation and useful tools for supporting social connection among those at highest risk.This presentation will share the Guidelines’ preliminary recommendations, as well as data from two national surveys alongside other insights gained from ongoing research and stakeholder engagement.

PDHF: Effective phishing detection model combining optimal artificial and automatic deep features

Currently, the increasing number of high-volume phishing attacks is among the largest threats to networking environments on a daily basis. During such a severe attack, researchers prefer to extract numerous features to improve the accuracy of phishing detection. However, the redundant features that may exist in the extracted feature set may be adapted by phishing attackers, not only degrading detection performance but also shortening the effective time of the constructed detection models. To address these problems, this study proposes phishing detection based on hybrid features (PDHF), a novel phishing detection model based on a combination of optimal artificial and automatic deep learning features. The optimal artificial phishing features are obtained by removing redundant features based on the newly designed feature importance evaluation index and an improved bidirectional search algorithm. To extend the effective time of phishing detection, deep features are learned from URLs using a one-dimensional character convolutional neural network (CNN) and a disorderly quantized attention mechanism. The experimental results show that PDHF outperforms many state-of-the-art methods and achieves an accuracy of 0.9965, precision of 0.9942, recall of 0.9940, and F1-score of 0.9941. These results can help in the development of a security plug-in for clients, browsers, and various instant messaging tools that run on network edges, personal computers, smartphones, and other personal terminals.

Helios.TALK: A decentralised messaging framework that preserves the privacy of users

Communication via digital means, such as mobile messaging applications (apps), plays an increasingly important role in everyday life. However, most messaging apps employ centralized computing principles that relinquish control of their users’ personal data to social network platform providers. Decentralization has been proposed as an alternative that provides trustworthiness and data confidentiality, but this comes at expense of fewer provided features and non-intuitive user experience. To address this issue, we hereby present two interconnected decentralized messaging tools, developed in the scope of the HELIOS platform, which can support new decentralized social networks. The first tool is a framework that supports the development of context-aware decentralized messaging apps in mobile Android devices by organically tying together many of the platform’s standalone decentralized operations. The second is a decentralized messaging app, called helios.TALK, that builds on the framework but accommodates additional design considerations from the perspective of end-users.

Updating national physical activity guidelines based on the global WHO guidelines: experiences and challenges from Switzerland

Physical activity guidelines are recognized as an important element of a national approach to promote physical activity. This publication summarizes the approach and process taken to update the Swiss Guidelines, presents a summary of the updated guidelines and discusses experiences and identifies challenges. The multistage project involved: 1) to summarize the scientific evidence underpinning the 2020-edition of the WHO guidelines; 2) to systematically analyze the existing Swiss guidelines for different target groups and to develop proposals for updates 3) a participatory process to gain consensus with the main interested groups 4) to finalize the guidelines. Updated guidelines were adopted for infants, pre-school children, children and young people, adults, older adults and pregnant and postpartum women, in most cases following the WHO guidelines. Children, young people and adults living with disability and adults and older adults with chronic conditions are specifically addressed in each of the general guidelines for healthy populations, rather than developing separate guidelines for each of these groups as done by the WHO. The systematic approach in identifying aspects to update, the participatory approach and a scientific consortium and project coordination group with different thematic backgrounds were key strengths in the process. Challenges included the large amount of feedback and finding scientifically sound compromises. The updated versions of the Swiss national guidelines provide an excellent basis to further promote physical activity in Switzerland. A remaining key task is to develop a range of communication tools and materials for different target groups beyond the circle of experts and interested groups, considering available evidence on optimal messaging and best outlet tools and channels. To track population prevalence, inform policy and evaluate physical activity promotion at national and sub-national level in a timely fashion, strengthening existing physical activity monitoring will be important.

Retrospective analysis of factors influencing the implementation of a program to address unprofessional behaviour and improve culture in Australian hospitals

BackgroundUnprofessional behaviour among hospital staff is common. Such behaviour negatively impacts on staff wellbeing and patient outcomes. Professional accountability programs collect information about unprofessional staff behaviour from colleagues or patients, providing this as informal feedback to raise awareness, promote reflection, and change behaviour. Despite increased adoption, studies have not assessed the implementation of these programs utilising implementation theory. This study aims to (1) identify factors influencing the implementation of a whole-of-hospital professional accountability and culture change program, Ethos, implemented in eight hospitals within a large healthcare provider group, and (2) examine whether expert recommended implementation strategies were intuitively used during implementation, and the degree to which they were operationalised to address identified barriers.MethodData relating to implementation of Ethos from organisational documents, interviews with senior and middle management, and surveys of hospital staff and peer messengers were obtained and coded in NVivo using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Implementation strategies to address identified barriers were generated using Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) strategies and used in a second round of targeted coding, then assessed for degree of alignment to contextual barriers.ResultsFour enablers, seven barriers, and three mixed factors were found, including perceived limitations in the confidential nature of the online messaging tool (‘Design quality and packaging’), which had downstream challenges for the capacity to provide feedback about utilisation of Ethos (‘Goals and Feedback’, ‘Access to Knowledge and Information’). Fourteen recommended implementation strategies were used, however, only four of these were operationalised to completely address contextual barriers.ConclusionAspects of the inner setting (e.g., ‘Leadership Engagement’, ‘Tension for Change’) had the greatest influence on implementation and should be considered prior to the implementation of future professional accountability programs. Theory can improve understanding of factors affecting implementation, and support strategies to address them.

Popular post‐separation parenting smartphone apps: An evaluation

AbstractIn recent years a bewildering array of smartphone applications (“apps”) has emerged to support separated parents' communication. Post‐separation parenting apps vary in cost and features; they typically comprise a messaging tool, shared calendar, expense tracker and a means to export records for legal purposes. A key challenge for separated parents and family law practitioners alike is knowing which apps or app feature(s) can work well for different family contexts, needs and budgets. The present study sought to evaluate nine popular post‐separation parenting apps and their features using small‐n Human–Computer Interaction methods. Mediators role‐played high conflict ex‐couples while completing a set of five common post‐separation communication or organizational tasks. A cross‐case analysis of ratings was conducted. We found that (a) many of the mediators changed their apparent enthusiasm for co‐parenting apps once they had used the apps themselves; (b) all nine apps were rated somewhere between “Poor” to Fair’; and (c) features of some of the best‐known apps were not rated as highly as some of the features of more recent, lesser‐known apps.

Investigating the Role of Context in the Delivery of Text Messages for Supporting Psychological Wellbeing.

Without a nuanced understanding of users' perspectives and contexts, text messaging tools for supporting psychological wellbeing risk delivering interventions that are mismatched to users' dynamic needs. We investigated the contextual factors that influence young adults' day-to-day experiences when interacting with such tools. Through interviews and focus group discussions with 36 participants, we identified that people's daily schedules and affective states were dominant factors that shape their messaging preferences. We developed two messaging dialogues centered around these factors, which we deployed to 42 participants to test and extend our initial understanding of users' needs. Across both studies, participants provided diverse opinions of how they could be best supported by messages, particularly around when to engage users in more passive versus active ways. They also proposed ways of adjusting message length and content during periods of low mood. Our findings provide design implications and opportunities for context-aware mental health management systems.

This column shares the experience of using QQ, a Chinese social messaging tool, by Sichuan University Library in China, to provide an alternative informal reference service in addition to more traditional and formal methods of reference desk, telephone, online message/comment, and instruction, without additional funding.

International legal framework regulating military exercises Lawfare potentially associated with military exercises as a hybrid threat

This article analyses international law norms and diplomatic mechanisms concerning militaryexercises. As such a topic is relatively new, with the international legal system being breachedby authoritarian regimes using lawfare, the legal aspects of military exercises have not yetbeen researched and thus require more focus, especially from the standpoint of hybrid threats.International law itself is leaky and lacks enforcement measures, since sanctions are not anelement of the international legal arrangement. It lacks a centralised enforcement mechanism,the principles and rules governing responsibility for wrongful acts require the wrongdoerscooperation, and the mechanisms and procedures to deal with the consequences of suchwrongful acts, including restitution and compensation, are not universally recognised. Mostcountries in the global arena follow the paradigm of the United Nations, where states mustmaintain their relations in a peaceful manner in order to achieve security and stability. However,some undemocratic states, mainly the Russian Federation and the Peoples Republicof China, have been presenting hostile postures towards the Western worlds values, wherehuman life tops the hierarchy of protected values. Traditionally, military exercises have beenused as a messaging tool between strategic competitors and potential adversaries to signaltheir own military strength. Russia and China are fully aware of the lack of hard law concerningthe subject of military exercises; they readily seize the resulting opportunities to create andexploit legal grey zones, as well as to frequently breach international law, while knowing thatlittle can be done against their malevolent conduct.
