Energetic particle precipitation influences global secondary ozone distribution

The secondary ozone layer is a global peak in ozone abundance in the upper mesosphere-lower thermosphere (UMLT) around 90-95 km. The effect of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) from geomagnetic processes on this UMLT ozone remains largely unexplored. In this research we investigated how the secondary ozone responds to EPP using satellite observations. In addition, the residual Mean Meridional Circulation (MMC) derived from model simulations and the atomic oxygen [O], atomic hydrogen [H], temperature measurements from satellite observations were used to characterise the residual circulation changes during EPP events. We report regions of secondary ozone enhancement or deficit across low, mid and high latitudes as a result of global circulation and transport changes induced by EPP. The results are supported by a sensitivity test using an empirical model.

Meteor Radar for Investigation of the MLT Region: A Review

This is an introductory review of modern meteor radar and its application to the measurement of the dynamical parameters of the Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere (MLT) Region within the altitude range of around 70 to 110 km, which is where most meteors are detected. We take a historical approach, following the development of meteor radar for studies of the MLT from the time of their development after the Second World War until the present. The application of the meteor radar technique is closely aligned with their ability to make contributions to Meteor Astronomy in that they can determine meteor radiants, and measure meteoroid velocities and orbits, and so these aspects are noted when required. Meteor radar capabilities now extend to measurements of temperature and density in the MLT region and show potential to be extended to ionospheric studies. New meteor radar networks are commencing operation, and this heralds a new area of investigation as the horizontal spatial variation of the upper-atmosphere wind over an extended area is becoming available for the first time.

Sub-Hourly Variations of Wind Shear in the Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere as Observed by the China Meteor Radar Chain

Wind shear has important implications for Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) and gravity waves (GWs) in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) region where its momentum transport process is dominated by short-period (<1 h) GWs. However, the sub-hourly variation in wind shear is still not well quantified. This study aims to improve current understanding of vertical wind shear by analyzing multi-year meteor radar measurements at the Mohe (MH, 53.5°N, 122.3°E), Beijing (BJ, 40.3°N, 116.2°E), Wuhan (WH, 30.5°N, 114.6°E), and Fuke (FK, 19.5°N, 109.1°E) stations in China. The wind field is estimated by a new algorithm, e.g., the damped least squares fitting. Taking the wind shear estimated by normal products as a criterion, the shear produced by the new algorithm has more statistical convergence as compared to the traditional algorithm, e.g., the least squares fitting. Therefore, we argue that the 10 min DLSA wind probably produces a more reasonable vertical shear. Both intensive wind shears and GW kinetic energy can be simultaneously captured during the 0600–1600 UTs of May at MH and during the 1300–2400 UTs of March at FK, possibly implying that the up-propagation of GWs could contribute to the production of large wind shears. The sub-hourly variation in wind shears is potentially valuable for understanding the interrelationship between shear (or KHI) and GWs.

On the response of the mesopause region over an Indian Antarctic station Bharati to the geomagnetic storm of 23–24 March 2023

We report, in this work, the changes in the thermal structure of the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region over an Indian Antarctic station Bharati (69.4° S, 76.2° E, CGM coordinates 75° S, 97° E) brought about by an intense geomagnetic storm of 23–24 March 2023 (Dst ∼ −155 nT). We use the temperature and OH airglow measurements of the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard NASA's Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) mission satellite to compare the thermal field of the MLT region on these disturbed days with the neighbouring quietest days of 27–28 March. Such comparison reveals both warming and cooling in the MLT region associated with the storm. An extension of this comparative study in the latitude region located poleward of Bharati also shows similar behavior of the MLT region during this geomagnetic storm. Overall, this study reveals the maximum temperature enhancement of ∼39–43 K to occur at around 99 km, a significant warming of ∼4–43 K in 95–105 km, and a decrease of ∼12–16 K in 80–87 km. While the enhancement of temperature in 95–105 km appears to be a consequence of the auroral heating associated with this storm; we are unable to account for the cooling below based on existing theories. Present observation of the development of cooling underneath the region of temperature enhancement during the geomagnetic storm is rare and demands further investigation.

Difference spectrum fitting of the ion–neutral collision frequency from dual-frequency EISCAT measurements

Abstract. The plasma–neutral coupling in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere strongly depends on the ion–neutral collision frequency across that region. Most commonly, the collision frequency profile is calculated from the climatologies of atmospheric models. However, previous measurements indicated that the collision frequency can deviate notably from the climatological average. Direct measurement of the ion–neutral collision frequency with multifrequency incoherent scatter radar (ISR) measurements has been discussed before, though actual measurements have been rare. The previously applied multifrequency analysis method requires a special simultaneous fit of the two incoherent scatter spectra, which is not possible with standard ISR analysis software. The difference spectrum method allows us to infer ion–neutral collision frequency profiles from multifrequency ISR measurements based on standard incoherent scatter analysis software, such as the Grand Unified Incoherent Scatter Design and Analysis Package (GUISDAP) software. In this work, we present the first results by applying the difference spectrum method. Ion–neutral collision frequency profiles obtained from several multifrequency EISCAT ISR campaigns are presented. The profiles obtained with the difference spectrum method are compared to previous collision frequency measurements, both from multifrequency ISR and other measurements, as well as results from empirical and comprehensive atmosphere models. Ion–neutral collision frequency measurements can be applied to improve first-principle ionospheric models.

Long-term trends of midlatitude horizontal mesosphere/lower thermosphere winds over four decades

Abstract. We analyse 43 years of mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) horizontal winds obtained from a joint analysis of low frequency (LF) spaced receiver lower ionospheric drift measurements from late 1978 through 2008 and VHF meteor radar wind observations since summer 2004 at Collm (51.3∘ N, 13.0∘ E). Due to limitations of the earlier LF measurements, we restrict ourselves to the analysis of monthly mean winds near 90 km, which represents the meteor peak height as well as mean LF reflection heights in the MLT. We observe mainly positive trends of the zonal prevailing wind throughout the year, while the meridional winds tend to decrease in magnitude in both summer and winter. Furthermore, there is a change in long-term trends around the late 1990s, which is most clearly visible in summer MLT winds. We compare these measurements with long-term partial reflection radar observations of winds at 81–85 km over Juliusruh (54.6∘ N, 13.4∘ E) since 1990, and find general qualitative agreement of trends except for summer. The latter can be explained by the different altitudes considered, and by the latitude dependence of the summer mesospheric jet.

Statistical Analysis of the Horizontal Phase Velocity Distribution of Atmospheric Gravity Waves and Medium‐Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances in Airglow Images Over Sata (31.0°N, 130.7°E), Japan

AbstractAtmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) and medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) in the upper atmosphere affect atmospheric circulation and radio‐wave transmission including satellite positioning and communications, and high‐frequency radio. The 3‐dimensional (3‐D) spectral analysis of airglow images makes it possible to extract wave parameters of AGWs and MSTIDs. Such spectral analysis of long‐term airglow images has not been performed in the southern part of Japan, which is a unique transition latitude from middle to equatorial region. In this study, we calculated the horizontal phase velocity distribution of AGWs in the mesosphere‐lower‐thermosphere (MLT), and MSTIDs in the F‐region ionosphere by applying the 3‐D spectral analysis method to the 557.7 and 630.0‐nm airglow images obtained at Sata (31.0°N, 130.7°E) in Japan over 20 years from 2000 to 2020. The spectra of AGWs in the MLT region in the 557.7‐nm airglow images show that the poleward (northward) power spectral density (PSD) is stronger in summer, suggesting that the tropospheric convection is a possible source of AGWs and the wave ducting propagation occurred. Westward propagation is also observed in winter, suggesting that wind filtering effect by mesospheric jets plays an important role. The PSD of MSTIDs in the 630‐nm airglow images increases during low solar activity periods, suggesting that MSTIDs are produced by ionospheric plasma instability. The westward PSD of MSTIDs is stronger in summer. These results are an important achievement in clarifying the statistical characteristics of AGWs and MSTIDs over Sata, Japan, based on long‐term airglow observations and 3‐D spectral analysis.

MIPAS ozone retrieval version 8: middle-atmosphere measurements

Abstract. We present a new version of O3 data retrieved from the three Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) observation modes that we refer to for simplicity as the modes of the middle atmosphere (middle atmosphere, MA; upper atmosphere, UA; and noctilucent cloud, NLC). The O3 profiles cover altitudes from 20 up to 100 km for the daytime and up to 105 km at nighttime, for all latitudes, and the period 2005 until 2012. The data have been obtained with the IMK–IAA (Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research and Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía) MIPAS level-2 data processor and are based on ESA version-8 re-calibrated radiance spectra with improved temporal stability. The processing included several improvements with respect to the previous version, such as the consistency of the microwindows and spectroscopic data with those used in the nominal-mode V8R data, the O3 a priori profiles, and updates of the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) parameters and the nighttime atomic oxygen. In particular, the collisional relaxation of O3(v1,v3) by the atomic oxygen was reduced by a factor of 2 in order to obtain a better agreement of nighttime mesospheric O3 with “non-LTE-free” measurements. Random errors are dominated by the measurement noise with 1σ values for single profiles for the daytime of < 5 % below ∼ 60 km, 5 %–10 % between 60 and 70 km, 10 %–20 % at 70–90 km, and about 30 % at 95 km. For nighttime, they are very similar below 70 km but smaller above (10 %–20 % at 75–95 km, 20 %–30 % at 95–100 km and larger than 30 % above 100 km). The systematic error is ∼ 6 % below ∼ 60 km (dominated by uncertainties in spectroscopic data) and 8 %–12 % above ∼ 60 km, mainly caused by non-LTE uncertainties. The systematic errors in the 80–100 km range are significantly smaller than in the previous version. The major differences with respect to the previous version are as follows: (1) the new retrievals provide O3 abundances in the 20–50 km altitude range that are larger by about 2 %–5 % (0.2–0.5 ppmv); (2) O3 abundances were reduced by ∼ 2 %–4 % between 50 and 60 km in the tropics and mid-latitudes; (3) O3 abundances in the nighttime O3 minimum just below 80 km were reduced, leading to a more realistic diurnal variation; (4) daytime O3 concentrations in the secondary maximum at the tropical and middle latitudes (∼ 40 %, 0.2–0.3 ppmv) were larger; and (5) nighttime O3 abundances in the secondary maximum were reduced by 10 %–30 %. The O3 profiles retrieved from the nominal mode (NOM) and the middle-atmosphere modes are fully consistent in their common altitude range (20–70 km). Only at 60–70 km does daytime O3 of NOM seem to be larger than that of MA/UA by 2 %–10 %. Compared to other satellite instruments, MIPAS seems to have a positive bias of 5 %–8 % below 70 km. Noticeably, the new version of MIPAS data agrees much better than before with all instruments in the upper mesosphere–lower thermosphere, reducing the differences from ∼± 20 % to ∼± 10 %. Further, the diurnal variation in O3 in the upper mesosphere (near 80 km) has been significantly improved.

AbstractAtmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) and medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) in the upper atmosphere can be observed in nocturnal airglow images. Spectral analysis of airglow images provides propagation direction and intensity of these waves. However, the spectral analysis of airglow images has not been done yet for stations in the southern hemisphere except for Antarctica. In this study, we calculated the horizontal phase velocity spectra of AGWs in the mesosphere‐lower‐thermosphere (MLT) region near the mesopause and MSTIDs in the F‐region ionosphere from airglow images at wavelengths of 557.7 and 630.0 nm, respectively, by applying the 3‐dimensional Fourier spectral analysis to the airglow images obtained at Darwin (12.4°S, 131.0°E) in Australia for 13.75 years from 2001 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2019. The spectra of AGWs in the MLT region show clear characteristics that the southward power spectral density (PSD) is stronger in summer and weaker in winter. Tropospheric convection was located at north of Darwin in summer and above Darwin in winter, suggesting that the tropospheric convection is a possible source of AGWs in the mesopause region. The spectra of MSTIDs in the F‐region ionosphere show that the dominant northwestward PSD is stronger in winter and during solar quiet periods. These features can be explained if the observed MSTIDs are caused by the ionospheric instabilities. A weak positive correlation was observed between PSDs of AGWs in the mesosphere and MSTIDs. We propose that the MSTIDs propagating other than northwestward may be generated by AGWs.

Identifying gravity waves launched by the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha′apai volcanic eruption in mesosphere/lower-thermosphere winds derived from CONDOR and the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster

Abstract. The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha′apai volcano eruption was a unique event that caused many atmospheric phenomena around the globe. In this study, we investigate the atmospheric gravity waves in the mesosphere/lower-thermosphere (MLT) launched by the volcanic explosion in the Pacific, leveraging multistatic meteor radar observations from the Chilean Observation Network De Meteor Radars (CONDOR) and the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster in Fennoscandia. MLT winds are computed using a recently developed 3DVAR+DIV algorithm. We found eastward- and westward-traveling gravity waves in the CONDOR zonal and meridional wind measurements, which arrived 12 and 48 h after the eruption, and we found one in the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster that arrived 27.5 h after the volcanic detonation. We obtained observed phase speeds for the eastward great circle path at both locations of about 250 m s−1, and they were 170–150 m s−1 for the opposite propagation direction. The intrinsic phase speed was estimated to be 200–212 m s−1. Furthermore, we identified a potential lamb wave signature in the MLT winds using 5 min resolved 3DVAR+DIV retrievals.

Direct Observational Evidence of Altered Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere Mean Circulation From a Major Sudden Stratospheric Warming

AbstractSudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are large‐scale phenomena characterized by dramatic dynamic disruptions in the stratospheric winter polar regions. Previous studies, especially those employing whole atmosphere models, indicate that SSWs have strong impacts on the circulation of the mesosphere lower thermosphere (MLT) and drive a reversal in the mean meridional circulation (MMC) near 90–125 km altitude. However, the robustness of these effects and the roles of SSW‐induced changes in global‐scale wave activity to drive the reversal have been difficult to observe simultaneously. This work employs horizontal lower thermospheric (∼93–106 km altitude) winds near 10°S‐40°N latitude from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐resolution Thermospheric Imaging instrument onboard the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) to present observational evidence of a prominent MLT MMC reversal associated with the January 2021 major SSW event and to demonstrate connections to semidiurnal tidal activity and possible associations with a ∼3‐day ultra‐fast Kevin wave.

Delineating the effect of upward propagating migrating solar tides with the TIEGCM-ICON

Introduction: The vertical coupling of the lower and upper atmosphere via atmospheric solar tides is very variable and affects the thermosphere and ionosphere system. In this study, we use Ionospheric Connection (ICON) explorer data from 220–270 Day Of Year (DOY), 2020 when large changes in the migrating semidiurnal tide (SW2) and the zonal and diurnal mean (ZM) zonal wind occur within 8 days.Method: We use the ICON Level4 product, the thermosphere-ionosphere-electrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM) driven by tides fitted to ICON observations via the Hough Mode Extension (HME) method. The effect of the upward propagating tides is isolated by examining the difference between two TIEGCM simulations with and without tidal HME forcing at the model lower boundary.Results: The simulations reveals that the solar SW2 changes its latitudinal structure at 250 after DOY 232 from two peaks at mid latitudes to one broad low latitude peak, while at 110 km the two-peak structure persists. The ZM zonal wind at 250 km undergoes a similar dramatic change. These SW2 changes are associated with the prevalence of antisymmetric HMEs after DOY 232. The migrating diurnal, terdiurnal and quaddiurnal tides at 250 km undergo similar variations as SW2. TW3 is strong in the thermosphere and most likely caused by non-linear tidal interaction between DW1 and SW2 above 130 km. Surprisingly, the solar in situ forcing of TW3 and SW2 in the upper thermosphere is not nearly as important as their upward propagating tidal component. Associated with the strong dynamical changes, the zonal and diurnal mean NmF2 decreases by approximately 15%–20%, which has a major contribution from the O/N2 decrease by roughly 10%. These changes are stronger than general seasonal behavior.Discussion: While studies have reported on the dynamical changes via SW2 in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region during the equinox transition period, this study is, to our knowledge, the first to examine the effects of rapid changes in SW2 on the upper thermosphere and ionosphere. The study highlights the potential of using ICON-TIEGCM for scientific studies.

Atmospheric Gravity Wave Derived from the Neutral Wind with 5-Minute Resolution Routinely Retrieved by the Meteor Radar at Mohe

Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) are crucial for the understanding of general circulation. However, their dynamical characteristics are hardly retrieved due to the difficulty in the high-resolution observation of wind. Therefore, this paper uses eight years (2013–2020) of meteor radar measurements in the MLT region at Mohe station (53.5°N, 122.3°E), China, to retrieve high-temporal-resolution mesospheric wind data and further evaluate the temporal variation of GW kinetic energy. As the detected meteor trails exceed 6, the wind velocity is recalculated using the least square algorithm method, significantly increasing the temporal resolution of wind from 1 h up to 5 min. This resolution is sufficiently high for the investigation of GW kinetic energy, which exhibits a high spatial-temporal variability. For instance, it is enhanced in the winter season during the period of 0200–1400 UT and in the spring season during the period of 0800–1300 UT. The similarity between the climatological characteristics of GWs in MLT and the seasonal variation of GW total energy in the troposphere, determined from high-resolution radiosondes near to Mohe station, suggests that the meteorology in the lower atmosphere could be an important source of GWs in the MLT region.

Investigation on the Anomalous Weakening of Diurnal Tides in the Mesosphere‐Lower Thermosphere

AbstractVariations in tidal characteristics assume importance as far as the atmosphere‐ionosphere coupling is concerned. The present study examines short‐term variabilities in diurnal tidal characteristics, using one decade (2006–2015) of wind measurements in the mesosphere‐lower thermosphere (MLT) region over a near equatorial location, Thumba (8.5°N, 77°E). The study presents two distinct events of anomalous tidal weakening, with decrease in monthly mean tidal amplitude by −38 ms−1 (−26 ms−1) in February 2010 and −17 ms−1 (−8 ms−1) in January 2012 at 98 km (91 km). These events are observed to be coinciding with the occurrence of strong quasi‐two‐day wave (QTDW). Compared to pre‐event conditions, decrease (increase) in tidal (QTDW) amplitudes at 91 km is −13.03 ms−1 (34.97 ms−1) and −15.65 ms−1 (52.81 ms−1) during the first and second event, respectively. However, causative mechanisms are found to be different for both the events. While the former event is primarily due to parametric excitation of phase locked 2‐day waves by diurnal tide, the latter one is mainly due to non‐linear interaction between tide and QTDW and subsequent generation of secondary waves. While QTDW phase is relatively stable during the former event, it shows steep temporal variations during the latter one. Changes in background wind conditions are also found to be more conducive for weakening of diurnal tide during the former event. These anomalous changes in tidal characteristics would have significant impacts on ionospheric processes. The significance of this study lies in providing observational evidence for the existence of different pathways through which QTDW affects tidal amplitudes over the low‐latitude MLT region.

Numerical simulation of stratospheric QBO impact on the planetary waves up to the thermosphere

With the help of numerical simulation, a detailed analysis of the dynamical effect of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the equatorial zonal wind on the planetary waves (PWs) up to thermospheric heights is carried out for the first time. The 3-dimensional nonlinear mechanistic model of middle and upper atmosphere (MUAM) is used, which is capable of simulating the general atmospheric circulation from the surface up to 300–400 km altitude. The amplitudes of stationary and westward travelling PWs with periods from 4 to 10 days are calculated based on ensembles of model simulations for conditions corresponding to the easterly and westerly QBO phases. Fluxes of wave activity and refractive indices of the atmosphere are calculated to analyze the detailed behavior of the PWs. The important result to emerge is that the stratospheric QBO causes statistically significant changes in the amplitudes of individual wave components up to 25% in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere and 10% changes above 200 km. This change in wave structures should be especially noticeable in the atmosphere during periods of low solar activity, when the direct contribution of solar activity fluctuations is minimized. Propagating from the troposphere to the upper atmosphere, PWs contribute to the propagation of the QBO signal not only from the equatorial region to extratropical latitudes, but also from the stratosphere to the thermosphere. The need for a detailed analysis of large-scale wave disturbances in the upper atmosphere and their relationship with the underlying layers is due, in particular, to their significant impact on satellite navigation and communication systems, which is caused by amplitude and phase fluctuations of the radio signal.

Migrating solar diurnal tidal variability during Northern and Southern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

In this study, the variability of the migrating solar diurnal (DW1) tide in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region during Northern and Southern Hemisphere (NH & SH) Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSWs) is investigated using Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) temperature observations and reanalysis-driven Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (WACCM-X) simulations. The periods examined include four major NH SSWs that occurred in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013 and two SH SSWs that were observed in 2002 and 2019. Our analysis shows that the DW1 tide in both observations and simulations displays a reduction of amplitude at low-latitudes after the onset of NH and SH SSWs. As WACCM-X simulations qualitatively reproduce this feature of DW1 tidal variability common to both NH and SH SSWs, they have been used to examine the possible mechanism that could explain these observations in the DW1 tide. It is known that changes in the latitudinal shear of zonal winds at low-latitudes strongly affect the seasonal variation of the DW1 tide in the MLT. We show that SSW-associated changes in the latitudinal shear in the MLT could explain the observed variability of the DW1 tide during NH and SH SSWs.Graphical

An optimal estimation-based retrieval of upper atmospheric oxygen airglow and temperature from SCIAMACHY limb observations

Abstract. An optimal estimation-based algorithm is developed to retrieve the number density of excited oxygen (O2) molecules that generate airglow emissions near 0.76 µm (b1Σg+ or A band) and 1.27 µm (a1Δg or 1Δ band) in the upper atmosphere. Both oxygen bands are important for the remote sensing of greenhouse gases. The algorithm is applied to the limb spectra observed by the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) instrument in both the nominal (tangent heights below ∼ 90 km) and mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) modes (tangent heights spanning 50–150 km). The number densities of emitting O2 in the a1Δg band are retrieved in an altitude range of 25–100 km near-daily in 2010, providing a climatology of O2 a1Δg-band airglow emission. This climatology will help disentangle the airglow from backscattered light in nadir remote sensing of the a1Δg band. The global monthly distributions of the vertical column density of emitting O2 in a1Δg state show mainly latitudinal dependence without other discernible geographical patterns. Temperature profiles are retrieved simultaneously from the spectral shapes of the a1Δg-band airglow emission in the nominal limb mode (valid altitude range of 40–100 km) and from both a1Δg- and b1Σg+-band airglow emissions in the MLT mode (valid range of 60–105 km). The temperature retrievals from both airglow bands are consistent internally and in agreement with independent observations from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier transform spectrometer (ACE-FTS) and the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), with the absolute mean bias near or below 5 K and root mean squared error (RMSE) near or below 10 K. The retrieved emitting O2 number density and temperature provide a unique dataset for the remote sensing of greenhouse gases and constraining the chemical and physical processes in the upper atmosphere.

The Mid‐ to High‐Latitude Migrating Semidiurnal Tide: Results From a Mechanistic Tide Model and SuperDARN Observations

AbstractSimulations of the solar thermal migrating semidiurnal (SW2) tide in the mesosphere‐lower‐thermosphere (MLT) are compared against meteor wind observations from a longitudinal chain of high‐latitude Super Dual Auroral Radar Network radars. The simulations span the year 2015 and are performed using a mechanistic primitive equation model. The model employs a whole‐atmosphere tide forcing based on temperature tendency fields from the Specified Dynamics Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with Thermosphere and Ionosphere Extension, and a background atmospheric specification based on zonal wind and temperature data from the Navy Global Environmental Model‐High Altitude meteorological analysis system. Results show that the model accurately reproduces the observed seasonal variability of the SW2 tide in both the amplitude and phase. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate how the tidal forcing, dissipation terms, and seasonal variations in the background atmosphere shape the seasonal variations of the simulated SW2 tide. Notable results are that the background atmosphere most strongly impacts the SW2 tide forced in the troposphere, and that the specification of a narrow surface friction profile enhances the net SW2 amplitude in the MLT between April and October. Eddy diffusion is found to damp the simulated tide predominantly around summer solstice and in December.

Influence of geomagnetic disturbances on mean winds and tides in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere at midlatitudes

Abstract. Observations of upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) wind have been performed at Collm (51.3∘ N, 13.0∘ E) and Kazan (56∘ N, 49∘ E), using two SKiYMET all-sky meteor radars with similar configuration. Daily vertical profiles of mean winds and tidal amplitudes have been constructed from hourly horizontal winds. We analyse the response of mean winds and tidal amplitudes to geomagnetic disturbances. To this end, we compare winds and amplitudes for very quiet (Ap ≤ 5) and unsettled/disturbed (Ap ≥ 20) geomagnetic conditions. Zonal winds in both the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are weaker during disturbed conditions for both summer and winter. The summer equatorward meridional wind jet is weaker for disturbed geomagnetic conditions. Tendencies for geomagnetic effects on mean winds over Collm and Kazan qualitatively agree during most of the year. For the diurnal tide, amplitudes in summer are smaller in the mesosphere and greater in the lower thermosphere, but no clear tendency is seen for winter. Semidiurnal tidal amplitudes increase during geomagnetic active days in summer and winter. Terdiurnal amplitudes are slightly reduced in the mesosphere during disturbed days, but no clear effect is visible for the lower thermosphere. Overall, while there is a noticeable effect of geomagnetic variability on the mean wind, the effect on tidal amplitudes, except for the semidiurnal tide, is relatively small and partly different over Collm and Kazan.
