Participating in the Production of Silk Handicrafts in Phonxay Village, Luangprabang City

This study aim to study the participation in the production of silk handicrafts in Phon Xai Village, Luangprabang District, as a quantitative research which used questionnaires to collect data from a sample group of 98 people and analyze the data with the statistical program SPSS version 20. The results of the study found that people are most involved in the production and service of silk products, participation in marketing, participation in skills in silk production, and participation in administration and management Production of silk with the average total value is between 0.36-0.42 and the standard deviation is between 0.10-0.65. Gender analysis and empowerment of women and men in Cassava (<i>Manihot esculenta</i>) production in Kerala

Women’s participation is vitally important in agriculture so also in cultivation of tuber crops. In Kerala, cassava is cultivated mostly in homestead farming with active participation of the women. Gender analysis was conducted to map the profile characteristics and empowerment of men and women. Hundred respondents doing cassava cultivation were selected from Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala. Majority (61.53%) of the women and men (68.57%) had medium level of participation in cassava cultivation. The overall empowerment index of men (0.86) was more than women (0.78). Employment generation and economic benefits in cassava cultivation for men and women were also assessed.

Youth Participation in Rural Development in the Jabalpur District of Madhya Pradesh, India

This study elicits and understands rural youth’s participation in different rural development activities that are being conducted in the Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Data was collected by using a pre-tested and structured schedule. The demographic composition of youth revealed that majority of them were educated up to higher secondary school, belonged to Other Backward Class (OBC) and had a nuclear family. Majority of them were unmarried and opted farming as their major occupation, had low level of annual income, medium level of use of source of information, achievement motivation, social participation, extension contact and had moderately favorable attitude towards rural development activities. Results revealed that majority (50.00%) of the youth had a medium level of participation in rural development activities. Through NYKS many activities were listed out which were undertaken in respect to rural development. Based on the responses activities were arranged in sequence using the Garett ranking technique to identify and rank which of the following activity is performed regularly and at high extent and vice-versa by the youths. Activities like sanitising village surroundings (Garett score= 65.36), agricultural activities (Garett score=62.51) and plantation (Garett score=61.88) were found to be the major activities performed by the youths.

Analyzing Sociodemographic Factors Influencing Citizen Participation: The Case of Infrastructure Planning in Khon Kaen, Thailand

While public participation (PP) is a legal requirement for mega projects in most countries, some PP processes are perceived as the ceremonial fulfilment of obligations without the adequate involvement of citizens. However, limited empirical studies have explored the individual factors of PP in infrastructural development. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study investigated the sociodemographic factors influencing citizen participation in the light rail transit (LRT) project in Khon Kaen, Thailand by using sequential mixed methods to quantify and gain an in-depth understanding of citizen participation. Proportionate stratified random sampling was employed to select 505 respondents for the survey with a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were applied to elaborate the respondents’ participation level (non-participation, tokenism, and citizen power), while multinomial logistic regression (MLR) was used to analyze seven sociodemographic attributes potentially associated with the participation categories. The results showed that the majority (67%) of the respondents participated at the medium level of participation (tokenism). The MLR analysis revealed that residential location, age, occupation, and income had significant effects on the likelihood of participation at a high (citizen power) level. Meanwhile, age and occupation had significant effects on medium participation behavior (tokenism). The findings shed light on how PP can potentially be enhanced through sociodemographic targeting when designing citizen involvement in infrastructure planning.

Participation pattern of rural women in household production system

A rural woman contributes a lot in the household production system by participating in agriculture activities, different income generating activities like teaching, selling matters etc. and family as well as social activities which are an essential part of rural economy. To study the participation pattern of rural women in household production system, an experiment with ex post facto research design was conducted in three talukas named Vansda, Chikhali and Khergam of Navsari district. Two villages from each taluka were selected randomly. From one village twenty rural women as respondent were selected. The interview schedule was prepared and pre-tested to collect the data. Total 120 respondents were surveyed through personal interview technique from their home, farm, office or any other workplace. It was found that majority of the rural women had medium to low level of participation in household production system with medium level of participation in farm activities, home activities, off farm activities and communal activities.

Participation of farm women in dairy occupation

The present study was carried out in Bharuch district of Gujarat state. Considering the vast geographical area under present study the Student Advisory Committee had suggested to restricting the respondent size up to 120. So, total 10 respondents were selected randomly from each village. Thus, total 10 respondents were studied. The data were collected by personal contacts. The data were classified, tabulated and analyzed in order to make the findings meaningful. The statistical measures, such as percentage, Arithmetic mean and correlation of coefficient were used to analysis data. It was observed from the study that majority (68.33 %) of the respondents had medium level of participation in dairy occupation.

Extracurricular Humanism in Medicine Initiative and Medical Student Wellness: Retrospective Study.

BackgroundHumanism in Medicine Initiative (HIMI), an extracurricular program at Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUCOM) with 27 subgroups, fosters the humanities. Stress and burnout among first- and second-year medical students are prevalent across the United States. Solutions for stress among first- and second-year medical students have been proposed, but no gold standard exists. The relationship of humanism with stress and burnout has yet to be described in the literature.ObjectiveThis study investigates the relationship between participation in the HIMI and stress, burnout, and academic success among first- and second-year medical students.MethodsFirst- and second-year medical students enrolled at OSUCOM between August 2018 and August 2019 were recruited. Attendance in the HIMI and membership records were used to measure their participation. Curricular examination scores and those on Step 1 of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) were used to measure academic success. Stress and burnout were measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Perceived Stress Scale.ResultsIn total, 412 students were enrolled with 362 (87%) students participating in HIMI. Those with high participation were more often Black, Asian, female, or with a humanities undergraduate major compared to the overall study population. There were significant relationships between Gold Humanism Honors Society (GHHS) induction and participation of first- and second-year medical students in service- (χ21=5.8, P<.05) or leadership-focused (χ21=19.3, P<.001) HIMI groups. Medium levels of participation in the HIMI were associated with significantly higher stress. Performance on the Step 1 USMLE was not significantly associated with participation levels in the HIMI (low=233.7 vs high=238.0; P=.10).ConclusionsThe HIMI is an extracurricular program vastly utilized by first- and second-year medical students at OSUCOM and did not impact Step 1 USMLE scores. Medium participation in the HIMI was associated with higher stress, and service- and leadership-focused HIMI participation was associated with a higher level of induction to the GHHS. This study identifies areas for future studies to understand the relationship of the HIMI with stress and academic success.

Impact of Farmer Producer Organization (FPOs) on Economic Empowerment of the Member Farmers

The present study was conducted in Kalahandi district of Odisha. Date was collected from 4 FPOs selected randomly, and from each FPO 5 per cent of the total member farmers were selected by following proportionate random sampling in this way total 123 farmers were selected. Ex-post facto research design was followed. The study revealed that majority of the farmers belonged to middle age category, having primary level of education, nuclear family type, small family size (up to 4 member), majority were male, small farmers (between 2 to 11 acre of land). It was found that majority have medium level of participation in diff erent FPOs activities, economic motivation, risk orientation and market orientation. coming to economic impact there was 50.74 per cent, 44.11 per cent, 17.73 per cent, 8.24 per cent, 43.57 per cent and 24.48 per cent change in annual income, saving, expenditure, debt, no. of earning members and overall economic level respectively after joining the FPOs. It was also found that male farmers of nuclear family of up to 4 members involve mostly agriculture along with horticulture activities of higher both participation in FPOs and market orientation have positive impact on the economic empowerment of the member farmers.

Knowledge of agriculture technology school students

The present study on “Knowledge of Agriculture Technology School students” was conducted in Akola and Amravati districts of Maharashtra state. The exploratory research design of social research was used. In all, 120 respondents were selected by random sampling method. The data was collected with the help of questionnaire and statistically analyzed. The findings of the present study revealed that, majority of the respondents (57.50%) belonged to male category, (40.83%) were other backward class category, (65.84%) were having medium family education (40.00%) were having their parents main occupation as agriculture, (30.00%) belonged to semi-medium family land holding (2.01 to 4.00 ha), (48.33%) were belonged to medium family income group, 45.00% respondents were having medium level of participation in extra-curricular activities, (67.50%) had rural family background, whereas, majority of the students (39.17%) had secured first class in academic performance. In case of knowledge, majority of the students (65.83%) were medium in subject knowledge. Further it was reported that, family education, parental occupation, family land holding, family income, participation in extra-curricular activities, family background, academic performance had positive and significant relationship with their knowledge of different subjects of ATS. In case of gender and caste of the students, it was found to be negatively non-significant with their knowledge of different subjects of ATS.

Effects of health-information-based diabetes shared care program participation on preventable hospitalizations in Taiwan

BackgroundTaiwan’s Diabetes Shared Care Program has been implemented since 2012, and the health information system plays a vital role in supporting most services of this program. However, little is known regarding the effectiveness of this information-based program. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of the participation of the Diabetes Shared Care Program on preventable hospitalizations.MethodsThis longitudinal study examined the data of health-care claims from 2011 to 2014 obtained from the diabetes mellitus health database. Patients with diabetes aged ≥18 years were included. Preventable hospitalizations were identified on the basis of prevention quality indicators developed for administrative data by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. A multilevel logistic regression was performed to examine the effects of the participation of the Diabetes Shared Care Program on preventable hospitalizations after adjustment for other variables. Analyses were conducted in late 2018.ResultsA medium level of participation (p = 0.05), age between 40 and 64 years(p < 0.0001), and absence of a catastrophic illness(p < 0.0001) were associated with a lower probability of having a preventable hospitalization. Male sex(p < 0.0001), age ≥ 65 years(p = 0.0203), low income level(p < 0.0001), living in the Southern division(p = 0.0106), and presence of many comorbidities(p < 0.0001) were associated with a higher probability of having a preventable hospitalization after adjustment for characteristics at the individual and county levels.ConclusionsThe health information system records patients’ medical history, monitors quality of care, schedules patient follow-ups, and reminds case managers to provide timely health education. This health-information-based Diabetes Shared Care Program is associated with better quality care of ambulatory, so it should be promoted on a broader scale.

Socio-Economic Profiling of Members of Women’s Groups in Raipur District of Chhattisgarh

In India, collective farming by Women’s Groups (WGs) was introduced as a strategy to improve needy women’s livelihood alternatives. The study was performed in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Three villages were chosen from two selected blocks viz.,Arang and Dharsiwa, and five women groups were selected from each village. Most of the women members of women’s groups were in the middle age category. More than one-third of the women members had education up to middle school level. About fifty percent of the women members had medium family size and almost ninety-six percent of the respondents were married. Nearly 70 percent of the women member of women’s groups had marginal (<2.5 acres) landholdings. Sixty percent of the respondents had medium level of annual family income. Nearly sixty-eight percent of women members did not receive any training. Majority of the members of women’s groups had medium level of participation in extension and mass media activities.

Analysis of Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Participation of Farm Families on Watermelon Production in Sabon-Birni, Sokoto State, Nigeria

This study was carried out based on the analysis of socio-economic factors influencing participation of farm families on watermelon production in Sabon-Birni, Sokoto State, Nigeria. The sampling procedure used for the selection of the study area was achieved using multistage sampling, while proportionate sampling was used for the selection of 188 farm families participated on watermelon production as sample size of the study. Structured questionnaire administered through the interview schedule was used for the collection of primary data, while empirical and contextual information obtained from published and unpublished materials were used as secondary data for the study. The instrument for data collection was subjected to face and construct validation to modify the items with the ambiguity, while descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the study for data analysis. The study revealed that the majority of farm families participated on watermelon production in Sabon-Birni were males (95%);age (53.2%) between 15-30 years; married (87%); acquired informal education (88%); family size (50.2%) between 11-20 members; farm size (55.9%) between 1-2 hectares; farming experience (57.4%) between 6-10 years; land acquisition through inheritance (57.9); used watermelon local seeds (86%) as planting materials and obtained N500,000-1,000,000 as annual income for watermelon production. The study further revealed that the majority of farm families participated on watermelon production in Sabon- Birni were at the medium level of participation (52.1%); security challenges (96.3%) affect the optimum participation of farm families on watermelon production; armed bandit (97.3%) was the most security challenge that affect the optimum participation of farm families on watermelon production. The formulated null hypothesis of the study was rejected, because (calculated F value of 75.45 &gt; tabulated F value of 1.24) at 5% level of significance. The study recommended the need for farm families participated on watermelon production to have adequate security for stability and continuity of watermelon production.

A study on Extent of Participation and Perception of Farmers on Benefits of IWMP (Integrated Watershed Management Programme)

Watershed is a basin-like landform defined by highpoints and ridgelines that descend into lower elevations and stream valleys. Watershed development involves conservation, regeneration and judicious utilization of natural resources. It aims to bring about an optimum balance between the demand and use of natural resources so that they remain sustainable over time. Ex-post-facto research design was adopted for the study with the objective to find out the extent of participation of watershed farmers in Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) and to find out its benefits. Majority of the watershed farmers had medium level of participation in IWMP followed by low and high participation. The independent variables viz., age, education, farming experience, training received, socio-political participation, efficiency of group leadership, group cohesiveness, decision making pattern and hard work oriented-ness were found positively and significantly related with the extent of participation of watershed farmers in IWMP.

Strategi pembangunan wilayah partisipatif di Kabupaten Gresik menitikberatkan pada pembangunanprasarana jalan melalui program Bantuan Keuangan Pembangunan Jalan Poros Desa. Cakupan wilayahstudi ini meliputi Kecamatan Panceng, Kabupaten Gresik. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengetahui bentukdan tingkat partisipasi masyarakat dalam Pembangunan Jalan Poros Desa yang dibedakan oleh jarakkegiatan dari permukiman di tiap desa. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatanpostpositivistik rasionalistik dengan metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Proses penelitian secaradeduktif, dengan menggunakan konsep atau kajian teori sehingga muncul pertanyaan penelitian:bagaimana partisipasi masyarakat dalam Pembangunan Jalan Poros Desa di Kecamatan PancengKabupaten Gresik? Studi ini menganalisis bentuk dan tingkat partisipasi, serta pengaruh lokasi terhadapbentuk dan tingkat partisipasi masyarakat yang dilakukan pada kedua kategori desa tersebut. Hasilanalisa yang dilaksanakan menunjukkan adanya perbedaan bentuk dan tingkat partisipasi antara keduakategori desa. Pada desa kategori pertama terdapat bentuk partisipasi pengendalian penuh (Full Control)dengan tingkat partisipasi tinggi dan pada desa kategori kedua teramati bentuk partisipasi pengendalianterbagi (Shared Control) dengan tingkat partisipasi sedang.Kata kunci : partisipasi masyarakat, pembangunan jalan poros desa

Assessment of People's Participation under Watershed Development Programme in the State of Kerala, India

People's participation and the influence of socio-psychological characteristics of the beneficiaries on their participation were assessed under a watershed development project in the State of Kerala, India. The results indicate a ‘target-oriented’ approach, without much attention to social organization for promoting people's participation. Most of the beneficiaries of the project have medium level of participation in watershed-related activities. Socio-economic status, level of modernization and extension participation of the beneficiaries are the characteristics which can be used to discriminate between people with low, medium and high levels of participation. The five socio-psychological characteristics of beneficiaries in the study, together, explain 96.8 per cent of the variance observed in participation level between beneficiaries having less than one ha and those having more than 1 ha landholding. There exists potential for the implementing agencies of development projects for identifying and promoting such characteristics of the beneficiaries for improving their involvement under the project.
