The article deals with formal and semantic neological terms in the field of medicine as a domain with a dynamically developing interdisciplinary terminology. The official French terminological database FranceTerme, available online, has been used as a corpus: namely a closed group of the 175 terms that have been added since 2011 under the heading Health and Medicine. The analysis of formal terminogenic means deals with derivation, composition, abbreviation, syntactic formation, and borrowing, which are commented upon and complemented via relevant examples. The article further deals with semantic neology, manifesting itself as terminologization of words from everyday language and their figurative use. The metaphors detected in the corpus are based both on analogies of form and function, and the most frequently occurring metonymies are based on a cause–effect relationship. The analysis is mainly qualitative, as the variability and multiplicity of terminological means involved in term formation constitute the principal limiting factors for a deeper quantitative analysis.

Evaluation of the Antipyretic Effects of Methanolic Leaf Extract of Chromolaena odorata in Albino Rats

This study evaluates the antipyretic activity of methanolic leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata in albino rats. Pyrexia, commonly known as fever, is the medical term for an elevated body temperature. It occurs when the body's temperature rises above the normal range, typically over 38°C (100.4°F), as a response to infection, inflammation, or other stimuli. The experimental setup included five groups of albino rats, with two control groups receiving either normal saline (negative control) or acetaminophen (positive control), and the test groups receiving 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the leaf extract. Fever (pyrexia) was induced using 0.01 mL/kg of Escherichia coli suspension injected into the rats, after which varying doses of the methanolic leaf extract were administered. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in rectal temperature in the rats treated with the extract, showing a dose-dependent response. The highest antipyretic activity was observed in the group administered 400 mg/kg, where the rectal temperature decreased by 2.5°C within two hours of treatment. This effect was comparable to, and in some cases, exceeded that of acetaminophen, suggesting that the methanolic extract of Chromolaena odorata possesses significant antipyretic properties. The observed antipyretic effect may be attributed to the bioactive constituents of the plant, including flavonoids, terpenoids, and anthraquinones. Further research is recommended to isolate and characterize the active compounds responsible for the observed pharmacological activity.

Building the Medical Lexicon: A Corpus-Based Approach to Optimising Medical Terminology Acquisition for Pre-Health Science Students

Pre-health science students, especially those learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), encounter substantial challenges in acquiring medical vocabulary, as they must master specialised terminology while developing general English proficiency. This study addresses this issue by proposing a frequency-based, corpus-driven approach to streamline medical vocabulary acquisition and reduce cognitive load. Focusing on the skeletal system chapter of a medical textbook, the research categorises terms into four groups—foundational, intermediate, advanced, and deferred—based on their frequency and relevance within medical discourse. Using Sketch Engine as the primary corpus tool for analysis, high-frequency terms are prioritised in early instruction to build a strong foundation, while more complex terms are introduced incrementally to support progressive knowledge development. Rare, highly technical terms are deferred to advanced stages, ensuring students engage with essential terminology at appropriate learning points. The study provides a practical, data-driven framework adaptable across other medical domains, offering a scalable model to enhance EFL students’ vocabulary acquisition. By aligning instruction with frequency-based categories, educators can better manage students' learning burden, promote retention, and ensure mastery of critical concepts, while also guiding curriculum planning to foster gradual and structured learning progression.

Value sets and the problem of redundancy in value set repositories.

Crafting high-quality value sets is time-consuming and requires a range of clinical, terminological, and informatics expertise. Despite widespread agreement on the importance of reusing value sets, value set repositories suffer from clutter and redundancy, greatly complicating efforts at reuse. When users encounter multiple value sets with the same name or ostensibly representing the same clinical condition, it can be difficult to choose amongst them or determine if any differences among them are due to error or intentional decision. This paper offers a view of value set development and reuse based on a field study of researchers and informaticists. The results emerge from an analysis of relevant literature, reflective practice, and the field research data. Qualitative analysis of our study data, the relevant literature, and our own professional experience led us to three dichotomous concepts that frame an understanding of diverse practices and perspectives surrounding value set development: Permissible values versus analytic value sets;Prescriptive versus descriptive approaches to controlled medical vocabulary use; andSemantic and empirical types of value set development and evaluation practices and the data they rely on.This three-fold framework opens up the redundancy problem, explaining why multiple value sets may or may not be needed and advancing academic understanding of value set development. In order for value set repositories to become more rather than less useful over time, software must channel user efforts into either improving existing value sets or making new ones only when absolutely necessary. This would require major, innovative changes to value set repository platforms. We believe the most direct path to giving value set developers the ability to leverage prior work is by encouraging them to compare existing value sets using advanced interfaces like VS-Hub, and by collecting and using metadata about code inclusion and exclusion decisions during the authoring process.

Hands-On Versus Hands-Off Treatment of Hip-Related Nonspecific Musculoskeletal Diseases: A Systematic Review

Background/Objectives: A manual approach combined with therapeutic exercise versus therapeutic exercise alone is a debated issue in the literature. The American College of Rheumatology guidelines “conditionally recommended against” manual therapy for the management of hip osteoarthritis. Manual therapy followed by exercise, instead, appears to lead to a faster return to sport than exercise alone for adductor groin pain. There is a need to understand which is the most effective treatment in the management of hip nonspecific musculoskeletal diseases. The aim of this systematic review is to determine which is the most effective treatment between manual therapy combined with therapeutic exercise and therapeutic exercise alone in subjects with hip nonspecific musculoskeletal diseases. Methods: This systematic review complies with the guidelines of the 2020 Prisma Statement. The databases consulted were Pubmed, Cinahl, and Web Of Science. The search was conducted from October 2004 to November 2023. The search string was developed following the PICO model. Free terms or synonyms (e.g., manual therapy, exercise therapy, hip disease, effectiveness) and Medical Subject Headings terms were combined with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). The risk-of-bias assessment was conducted using Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized controlled trials and the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for observational studies. A qualitative analysis of the results was conducted through narrative synthesis of key concepts. When possible, quantitative analysis was conducted through statistical parameters. Results: Ten articles were analyzed. Results show no differences between the interventions analyzed. Preliminary evidence seems to favor the combined intervention for the outcomes of pain, ROM, and patient satisfaction, with other studies claiming an absence of differences. Only one study claims that therapeutic exercise alone is more effective for quality of life. Preliminary evidence seems to show that manual therapy does not seem to bring any benefit in addition to therapeutic exercise in mid- and long-term functionality, especially for hip osteoarthritis. Conclusions: There seems to be no difference in effectiveness between manual therapy combined with therapeutic exercise and therapeutic exercise alone in individuals with hip nonspecific musculoskeletal diseases.

Problems in Teaching Russian to Foreign Medical Students Studying in an Intermediary Language (Using the Example of Iranian Students)

The article examines the problems in teaching the Russian language that teachers face when working with medical students studying in an intermediary language. The early stage of language learning for such students causes the greatest difficulty, therefore, the importance of increased attention and the search for additional teaching methods in order to introduce diversity into the learning process and increase motivation to learn is emphasized. The ways of solving such difficulties based on the analysis of their occurrence are proposed. For students whose Russian is not the main language of instruction, the issue of motivation causes the greatest difficulties. The author notes the great role of communication between teachers and students in increasing motivation to study. The issue of the lack of specialized textbooks for such a category of students is also being considered, which significantly affects the effectiveness of the educational process. In addition, the author raises the question of how much a language teacher should know about the material of a medical specialty. Since the main purpose of teaching medical students is the development of early professionalization, a Russian teacher is a guide to mastering medical terminology from scratch, therefore he must know the material to a minimum extent. But in practice, many universities lack the necessary training of teachers and the necessary measures for professional development in the specialty.

Identifying the molecular mechanism of blood stasis syndrome through the symptom phenotype-genotype association approach.

In traditional medicine (TM), blood stasis syndrome (BSS) is characterized by insufficient blood flow, resulting in a group of symptoms such as fixed pain, a dark complexion, bleeding, and an astringent pulse. While BSS pathology has been previously explored, its molecular mechanisms remain elusive owing to challenges in linking TM symptoms to genes. Our study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying BSS using a phenotype-genotype association approach. We extracted BSS symptoms from various studies, linked them to medical terms using a Unified Medical Language System, and connected these terms to genes in the DisGeNET database. The molecular network patterns of BSS symptoms were revealed through analyzing protein-protein interactions and symptom-gene associations. Our findings revealed 1325 associations between 16 BSS symptoms comprising 32 concept-unified identifier terms and 937 genes. Network analysis highlighted the centrality of JAK2, ITGB3, and F2, associated with multiple BSS symptoms (≥5 concept-unified identifier terms) and numerous protein interactions (≥20 interactions). Enrichment analysis indicated the involvement of BSS genes in the immune system (P-value = 4.49e-14) and hemostasis (P-value = 1.28e-07) pathways. BSS symptoms were linked to genes regulating blood coagulation, immune responses, blood flow, and inflammatory reactions. This approach may be extended to establish genotype networks for understanding TM pattern identifications, which are composed of diverse groups of symptoms, for personalized diagnosis and treatment.

Older adults’ recognition of medical terminology in hospital noise

Word identification accuracy is modulated by many factors including linguistic characteristics of words (frequent vs. infrequent), listening environment (noisy vs. quiet), and listener-related differences (older vs. younger). Nearly, all studies investigating these factors use high-familiarity words and noise signals that are either energetic maskers (e.g., white noise) or informational maskers composed of competing talkers (e.g., multitalker babble). Here, we expand on these findings by examining younger and older listeners’ speech-in-noise perception for words varying in both frequency and familiarity within a simulated hospital noise that has important non-speech information. The method was inspired by the real-world challenges aging patients can face in understanding less familiar medical terminology used by healthcare professionals in noisy hospital environments. Word familiarity data from older and young adults were collected for 800 medically related terms. Familiarity ratings were highly correlated between the two age groups. Older adults’ transcription accuracy for sentences with medical terminology that vary in their familiarity and frequency was assessed across four listening conditions: hospital noise, speech-shaped noise, amplitude-modulated speech-shaped noise, and quiet. Listeners were less accurate in noise conditions than in a quiet condition and were more impacted by hospital noise than either speech-shaped noise. Sentences with low-familiarity and low-frequency medical words combined with hospital noise were particularly detrimental for older adults compared to younger adults. The results impact our theoretical understanding of speech perception in noise and highlight real-world consequences of older adults’ difficulties with speech-in-noise and specifically noise containing competing, non-speech information.

Benefits of Mediterranean and Japanese Diets among Nurses: A Scoping Literature Review.

The present study aimed at all the benefits induced by taking the Mediterranean or Japanese diet among nurses and whether any beneficial differences in intakes between the two diets were considered. The author searched PubMed and Embase databases for medical subheadings terms and free full text referring to "Diet," "Mediterranean," "Japanese," and "Nurses" before 31st December 2022. A total of 14 studies were included in this scoping review, which better underlined all the benefits implicated in the Mediterranean or Japanese diets assumption and also if there were any differences between the two diets. These eating behaviors were exclusively investigated among nurses. The nursing profession has always been considered the most stressful healthcare activity. However, some important concerns in the regular lifestyle, such as eating and physical activity, might help to live better.

End-of-life Care, Comfort Care, and Hospice: Terms and Concepts.

This study aims to clarify and standardize the terms and concepts associated with end-of-life care, specifically within the contexts of hospice and palliative care. We reviewed references pertaining to hospice and palliative care, including definitions of end-of-life care and comfort care. Two meetings were held with members of the medical terminology committee of the Korean Society for Hospice and Palliative Care, along with experts in the field, to establish a consensus on the terms used. In the first round, six experts participated, and in the second round, eight experts engaged in online meetings to brainstorm, exchange opinions, and review and discuss reference materials concerning terms related to hospice and palliative care. Legal definitions do not always align with those used in clinical medical settings. Although it is challenging to define the period precisely, end-of-life care encompasses all diseases, including age-related infirmities, typically spanning 6 months to 1 year. Hospice care, in contrast, includes certain non-cancerous terminal diseases as well as terminal cancer, covering a period of 3 to 6 months. Comfort care generally refers to the care provided approximately 7 days before death. A conceptual understanding of terms related to end-of-life care must be reached through cultural and social consensus. Furthermore, end-of-life care should not be limited to cancer but extended to all diseases. In the future, the scope of end-of-life care should expand to encompass care for bereaved families, evolving into a more comprehensive concept of comfort care.

Advancements and Challenges in the Management of Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis: A Review

Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is the medical term used to describe a focus of infection involving a valvular substitute within the heart. It is a significant concern in the field of cardiology, and the epidemiology of PVE has seen notable developments over the last five decades. The disease currently affects an older demographic and is becoming increasingly prevalent in patients with transcatheter-implanted valves. It is imperative that we urgently address the significant challenges posed by PVE. It is a disease that has a wide range of potential aetiologies, clinical presentations, and courses. In developed countries, Staphylococcus aureus is now the predominant causative organism, resulting in an aggressive form of disease that frequently afflicts vulnerable or elderly populations. However, it is clear that Enterococcus species present a significant challenge in the context of PVE following TAVR procedures, given their elevated prevalence. The 2023 Duke/International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases infective endocarditis diagnostic criteria now include significant developments in microbiological and image-based techniques for diagnostic purposes, specifically the incorporation of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography. These developments unequivocally enhance the diagnostic sensitivity for PVE, while maintaining the specificity. They do so in accordance with the results of studies conducted specifically for the purpose of validation. The lack of rigorous scientific studies and a shortage of funding and resources for research have led to a significant gap in our understanding. Randomized controlled trials could provide invaluable insight and guidance for clinical practice, but they are missing, which represents a major gap. It is clear that there is an urgent need for more research. PVE is a life-threatening condition that must be handled by a multidisciplinary endocarditis team at a cardiac centre in order to improve outcomes. The emergence of innovative surgical techniques has empowered clinicians to steer more patients away from surgical procedures, despite the presence of clear indications for them. A select group of patients can now complete parenteral or oral antimicrobial treatment at home. Additionally, antibiotic prophylaxis is the best option for individuals with prosthetic valves who are going to have invasive dental procedures. These individuals should be given antibiotics beforehand.

Learning medical terminology in an ESP medical course

Abstract This quasi-experimental study investigated the efficacy of two distinct approaches for vocabulary learning, namely vocabulary notebooks and word lists, specifically in the context of learning medical terms. Sixty first-year undergraduate EFL students enrolled in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) medical course were recruited and divided equally into three groups: one group received guidance on using and maintaining vocabulary notebooks to learn 50 target terms, one group was instructed in the use of word lists to study the same 50 target words, and the control group did not undergo any intervention. The results indicate that both treatment approaches yielded significant advancements in vocabulary learning from pretests to posttests. However, the vocabulary notebook group demonstrated significantly superior performance in long-term effectiveness compared with the word list group. The findings imply that both approaches should be incorporated in a medical ESP curriculum.

Collaboration Across Disciplines to Integrate Clinical Expertise into Medical Software Development: The Approach of the Dedalus Medical Office.

Medical informatics is a multidisciplinary field combining clinical and technical expertise. Addressing the challenge of aligning software design with clinicians' real-world needs, Dedalus established the Medical Office, a dedicated department designed to integrate clinical expertise directly into the software development process, in 2022. This paper details the approach and impact of the Medical Office. An international team of 15 healthcare professionals with experience in medical informatics was assembled. The team employed a multifaceted approach, incorporating global communication sessions and a ticketing system to track and analyze service requests. Over two years, 398 tickets were received, categorized into nine areas: clinical content curation, medical terminologies, clinical safety, clinical evaluation, design support, clinical UX, research & publication, real-world medical cases, and pre-sales support. The average duration of ticket resolution decreased over time, attributed to process fine-tuning and the formation of a relevant expert group. A preliminary satisfaction survey indicated positive feedback from technical teams. The collaborative model improved software design, usability, and clinical safety, demonstrating the value of clinician involvement. While preliminary results are promising, ongoing evaluation and adaptation are essential. The study emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in medical informatics and the benefits of clinician involvement in healthcare technology development. Future studies should explore this model's long-term impacts and scalability in other organizations and healthcare systems.

Electrical shock injuries: an analysis of voltage, frequency, and contact mode determinants

This article examines the precision of medical terminology commonly used to diagnose and understand the pathogenesis of electrical shock injuries. As everyday technology increasingly depends on advanced electrical mechanisms that utilize more efficient modes of electrical energy transmission, waveforms, and frequencies, emergency and trauma physicians will continue to encounter a broader array of electrical injury manifestations. This phenomenon prompts a closer examination of the diagnostic terminology associated with electrical shocks. The pathogenesis of electrical injury depends on the tissue electric field strength, frequency, current duration, and tissues involved. Some traditional diagnostic terms, for example, “entry” and “exit” wounds, arc-flash burns, and “high-voltage” and “low-voltage” electrical injuries, obscure the complexity of this pathogenesis, likely impeding medical management and advances in electrical safety science. This article presents the scientific rationale for suggested changes to medical terminology and aims to encourage future refinement.

Added Value of Medical Subject Headings Terms in Search Strategies of Systematic Reviews: Comparative Study.

The massive increase in the number of published scientific articles enhances knowledge but makes it more complicated to summarize results. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus was created in the mid-20th century with the aim of systematizing article indexing and facilitating their retrieval. Despite the advent of search engines, few studies have questioned the relevance of the MeSH thesaurus, and none have done so systematically. The objective of this study was to estimate the added value of using MeSH terms in PubMed queries for systematic reviews (SRs). SRs published in 4 high-impact medical journals in general medicine over the past 10 years were selected. Only SRs for which a PubMed query was provided were included. Each query was transformed to obtain 3 versions: the original query (V1), the query with free-text terms only (V2), and the query with MeSH terms only (V3). These 3 queries were compared with each other based on their sensitivity and positive predictive values. In total, 59 SRs were included. The suppression of MeSH terms had an impact on the number of relevant articles retrieved for 24 (41%) out of 59 SRs. The median (IQR) sensitivities of queries V1 and V2 were 77.8% (62.1%-95.2%) and 71.4% (42.6%-90%), respectively. V1 queries provided an average of 2.62 additional relevant papers per SR compared with V2 queries. However, an additional 820.29 papers had to be screened. The cost of screening an additional collected paper was therefore 313.09, which was slightly more than triple the mean reading cost associated with V2 queries (88.67). Our results revealed that removing MeSH terms from a query decreases sensitivity while slightly increasing the positive predictive value. Queries containing both MeSH and free-text terms yielded more relevant articles but required screening many additional papers. Despite this additional workload, MeSH terms remain indispensable for SRs.

This research focuses on Jo Nesbø’s Macbeth (2018), an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play which addresses the anxieties about being human at a time when humanism has been deeply challenged. Informed by Agamben views on the ‘wolf-man’ and homo sacer, together with Derrida’s shrewd insights on ‘political bestiary’ which conveys the shared ‘outlaw’ status of the beast and the sovereign, this study explores Nesbø’s Macbeth in relation to Shakespeare’s infinite complexities to reveal the lycanthrope, a liminal being, who is pushed to the threshold of community to live permanently under threat of expulsion and annihilation or who transforms into a beast to survive in the contemporary political climate.

How accurately can ChatGPT 3.5 answer frequently asked questions by patients on glenohumeral osteoarthritis?

Abstract Background Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) systems like ChatGPT have emerged as valuable assets in providing accessible information across various domains, including the healthcare system. The use of ChatGPT may contribute to better patient education and better general healthcare knowledge. However, there is a paucity of data on the reliability of responses generated by ChatGPT in the context of specific medical diagnoses. Methods We identified 12 frequently asked questions by patients about glenohumeral osteoarthritis. These questions were formulated in both English and German, using common and medical terms for the condition, thus creating four groups for evaluation. The questions were then presented to ChatGPT 3.5. The generated responses were evaluated for accuracy by four independent orthopedic and trauma surgery consultants using a Likert scale (0 = fully inaccurate to 4 = fully accurate). Results Although there were two questions in two groups, all questions across all versions were answered with good accuracy by ChatGPT 3.5. The highest score on the Likert scale was 3.9 for the group where questions were posed in English using the medical term “glenohumeral osteoarthritis.” The lowest score of 3.2 was for the group where questions were posed in English using the common term “shoulder arthrosis.” On average, questions in English received a score of 3.5 on the Likert scale, slightly higher than those in German, which received a score of 3.4. Conclusion ChatGPT 3.5 can already provide accurate responses to patients’ frequently asked questions on glenohumeral osteoarthritis. ChatGPT can therefore be a valuable tool for patient communication and education in the field of orthopedics. Further studies, however, have to be performed in order to fully understand the mechanisms and impact of ChatGPT in the field.

Comparison of da Vinci Robotic Cholecystectomy and Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Postoperative Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness.

Robotic cholecystectomy (RC) using the da Vinci surgical system has been introduced as a potential alternative to the gold standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for gallbladder removal. This systematic review aims to evaluate and compare the postoperative outcomes (operative time, bile leak, and postoperative complications) and cost-effectiveness between da Vinci RC and LC. A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and PubMed, used Medical Subject Headings terms and Boolean operators to identify relevant studies. Comparative trials assessing postoperative outcomes and costs between RC and LC were included. Data were extracted independently by researchers and analyzed using the RevMan 5.4 software (The Cochrane Collaboration, London, UK). The analysis included six studies with a total of 1,013 patients, comprising three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and three cohorts conducted across Switzerland, Taiwan, the USA, and Italy. Results showed that LC had a significantly shorter operation duration than RC (standardized mean difference: 0.27; 95% CI, 0.05-0.49; p = 0.01). No significant differences were observed between RC and LC in terms of bile leak rates (odds ratio, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.06-2.21; p = 0.27) or postoperative complications (odds ratio, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.18-1.37; p = 0.18). Cost analysis revealed that RC was more cost-effective than LC (standardized mean difference, 3.16; 95% CI, 0.39-5.93; p = 0.03), with substantial heterogeneity noted among the studies. The findings suggest that RC does not provide significant clinical advantages over LC in postoperative outcomes and incurs higher costs. Due to the heterogeneity and the limited number of RCTs included, a major multicenter RCTis recommended to validate these results further. In conclusion, LC remains the preferred approach due to its shorter operative time and cost-effectiveness, with no significant differences in clinical outcomes compared to da Vinci RC. Further research with larger, multicenter trials is warranted to confirm these findings and guide clinical decision-making.

Medical Students’ Perceptions of ChatGPT Integration in English Medium Instruction: A Study from Saudi Arabia

ChatGPT has significantly impacted various educational sectors, including English-medium instruction (EMI). This study explores perceptions of Saudi medical students at the University of Bisha on integrating ChatGPT into their EMI coursework, focusing particularly on its influence on their comprehension and application of medical terminology in English. Employing a descriptive research design, this research collected data from 54 students using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data collection was facilitated through a questionnaire administered via Google Forms, with responses analyzed statistically using SPSS and qualitatively through thematic analysis. Results indicate a positive student reception towards ChatGPT, particularly its role in enhancing their understanding of medical English. These findings suggest substantial pedagogical benefits, proposing that meticulous integration of ChatGPT could significantly improve EMI in medical education. The study highlights ChatGPT’s capability to aid students in grasping complex medical terms and concepts, stressing the importance of strategic deployment to maximize educational outcomes.
