The Dilemma of Cannabis Prohibition in the Frame of Kompas TV (Analysis by Robert N Entman of the Talk Show Episode of Ganja: Myths and Facts on February 6, 2020)

This study discusses the dilemma of internal cannabis prohibition in the frame of Kompas TV. This dilemma was raised in Rosi’s talk show about Cannabis Topics: Myths and Facts on February 6, 2020. The aim of this study is to know how the media construction of Kompas TV was about the issue of utilizing cannabis as a medical requirement. In studying this, the researcher used method analysis based on framing the analysis of Robert Entman. This study follows a paradigm of subjective interpretive with a qualitative approach to the presented text in Rosi’s talk show. Analysis was done with the use of four substances based on framing the analysis of Robert Entman, namely, define problems (problem identification), diagnose causes (problem causes), make moral judgments (decision moral), and recommend treatment (settlement emphasize). Data collection techniques were used from video documentation of Rosi’s talk show. Research results reveal that Kompas TV, through Rosi’s talk show, shows a tendency to stick to the views that cannabis production is in the class of psychotropic group 1. Framing the shooting of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in English and Arabic news headlines: a critical discourse study

The study aims to investigate the ideological manipulation of language within news media headlines regarding the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. This study employs Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of Critical Discourse Analysis to conduct a comparative qualitative analysis of 100 Arabic and 100 English news headlines, exploring linguistic features at both microstructure and macrostructure levels. The analysis delves into identity construction for the victim and perpetrator, revealing the discursive linguistic manifestations of underlying ideologies in two distinct linguistic and cultural contexts. The microstructure analysis reveals the preference of Arabic headlines for active voice structure, rhetorical devices of numeration, emphatic language, and metaphors. On the other hand, English headlines preferred the passive voice structure and the rhetorical device of litotes. The macrostructure analysis unravels the cognitive interplay between news media outlets and their target audience, demonstrating how selective headlines significantly impact public opinion. It shapes their comprehension and interpretation, particularly within the broader context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ultimately, this research highlights the dynamic interplay between language, ideology, and power in news media, offering key recommendations for understanding their comparative impacts.

Researching Emotional Experiences as Discursive Elements – A Suggested Qualitative Method

As scholars in the fields of political science, media research, and social psychology endeavor to understand crucial aspects of emotionality in the media, there is a growing need to methodologically address the communicative and discursive aspects of affective constructions in media texts. This article argues that by breaking down mediated emotional experiences represented through language in a set of identifiable elements, such as subject, emotion type, valence, intensity, proposed action, and object, those experiences could be used as workable and potent units of analysis when studying discursive and ideological media constructs of emotionality. By connecting insights from emotion science, the sociology of emotions, and media sociology, the qualitative method outlined, Emotional Experience Profiling (EEP), provides a flexible research tool conducive to an understanding of how emotional experiences represented through language in media texts are constructed and how they shape political discourse, identity, and emotional cultures. To demonstrate and illustrate the application of the method, the article provides examples from a pilot study which explores the research question: How do emotional experiences featured in Swedish far-right alternative news media construct and articulate political discourse?

Does news literacy help combat misinformation? The interplay of news literacy, political ideology, and ideological media use on COVID-19 misperceptions

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic heightened the urgency of working across lines of political difference to combat misinformation. This paper asks: Does having news literacy matter in reducing misperceptions, and importantly, for whom does having news literacy matter? Using a national survey of US adults (N = 1700) that included the largest set of COVID-19-related misperceptions examined to date (k = 84), we tested how the effects of news literacy on misperceptions vary across ideology and ideological media consumption. Although holding a higher level of news literacy is associated with fewer misperceptions in general, it helps conservatives less than it helps liberals. Moreover, although news literacy is associated with mitigating the misperception-inducing effect of ideological media consumption on both ends of the political spectrum, this potential benefit appears to be weaker for conservative media use than for liberal media use. Finally, the benefit of having news literacy is maximized among cross-cutting consumers of ideological media but dampened among like-minded consumers, particularly conservatives with heavy conservative media consumption. We discuss the implications of our findings for identifying subgroups for future news literacy interventions and understanding the potentials and challenges of using news literacy to combat misinformation in a polarized climate.

Analisis Framing Pemberitaan Tragedi Kanjuruhan Malang pada Media Online Detik.com dan Kompas.com

This study aims to analyze the media framing of Detik.com and Kompas.com regarding the Kanjuruhan football riot tragedy in Malang at the end of 2022, with a focus on identifying the framing and media ideologies reflected in online reporting. The research employs the approach of the theory of social reality construction, with data collection through observation, documentation, and a literature review of 20 news articles covering the period from October 2 to October 14, 2022. The research findings reveal that Detik.com emphasizes framing news around the victims, attempting to convey empathy for them, and its reporting tends to be brief and less in-depth. On the other hand, Kompas.com is more oriented toward the development of events and problem resolution, with more informative and comprehensive reporting. The media ideology of Detik.com is more pronounced in its focus on the perspectives of the victims and the quantity of reporting, whereas Kompas.com emphasizes the development of issues and the government's role in resolving the case, with reporting focused on facts and data.

The death of Elizabeth II on Wikipedia: fleshing out freedom through technoliberal participation online

AbstractWhile journalists performed a long‐rehearsed move to announce the death of Elizabeth II on the BBC, several volunteer editors rushed to break the news in the late queen's Wikipedia article. Aside from updating verb tenses from is to was, such edits entailed a revisionist approach, with Wikipedians seeking to shape how the British royals would be portrayed online. Tracing the negotiations and edit wars on the English‐language Wikipedia surrounding this event, this article asks: to what extent does collaborative textual production subvert individual authorship in favour of knowledge co‐production and collective authorship? Drawing on an online ethnography on Wikipedia's metapages, I propose technoliberal participation as a framework to flesh out how internet users frequently perceive whatever is available online as a property of the collective. Online projects such as this self‐styled ‘free encyclopedia’ maximize their participants’ freedom to express themselves while setting them free from a sense of long‐lasting commitment to the project. Considering the place of technoliberal participation in several online settings, I argue that the perception of digital technologies as neoliberal tools to address neoliberal problems sets out freedom as a watchword around which content authorship is not erased, but reframed, via a responsibility‐free, do‐it‐yourself media ideology.

“Sorry If I Offended”: The Art of Nonapology, Racism, and White Supremacy in Sport

Despite perceived postracial ideologies of American sport, players, coaches, fans, and media have been complicit in reaffirming racial hierarchies through racist microaggressions and remarks. Such racist violations are commonly exposed in the current moment of widespread social media engagement and social justice activism. Subsequently, many violators issue apologies—often employing the conjunction “if”—which hinges the apology on the condition of the targeted group taking offense. We call these conditional apologies nonapology apologies and argue that they fall within a racializing apologia framework, devaluing and questioning the place of those offended in American society and sport, and reinforcing White supremacy. In this paper, we examine apology statements by sports figures and explore the implications of nonapology apologies.

“He speaks great English—For a guy from Moscow”: Language ideologies in NHL media

Ideologies about languages and countries are hard to shake, even in a multinational, multilingual setting like the National Hockey League (NHL) and the journalists who report on it. Despite its historical roots in Montréal and the dominance of Canadian and European players, the lingua franca of the NHL is English. In this work, we used qualitative analyses to examine players’, journalists’, and coaches’ attitudes toward languages other than English used on the ice. Across all groups, we found that Russian speakers were most likely to be assessed negatively, from being taciturn and unwilling to be interviewed (Frederickson, 2023) to being unlikely to speak good English (Keefe, 2023). Additionally, English-speaking players were more likely to associate positive sentiments with native North American English, Swedish, and Finnish speakers, but negative sentiments about Canadian French speakers and players from eastern European countries. Players and coaches also tended to be split on whether it was acceptable for other languages to be spoken in the locker room and on the ice. This work points to a fragmented in-group view of the acceptable language to use in professional hockey.

The Reinforced Effect of Integrating New Media and Local Urban Broadcasting

With the rapid advancements in information technology and the onset of the digital age, local urban broadcasting media in China, exemplified by radio stations, confront a slew of challenges and pressures. These range from competition with new media services, online broadcasting, and a myriad of digital media platforms. Yet, amidst these challenges lies the question of how local media can transition successfully in this new media era. Taking Haikou Music Broadcasting 916 as a representative case, this paper delves into the current predicaments faced by local radio stations. Moreover, it highlights strategies leveraging new media ideologies for transformation. The broader context involves a significant shift in listener demographics and preferences, underscored by the decline in traditional radio audience size and the parallel rise in smart device listenership. As local broadcasting stations grapple with these shifts, their strategic responsesincluding content diversification, multi-platform engagement, and offline event integrationsbecome pivotal. This research encapsulates these dynamics, offering insights into the evolving landscape of local urban broadcasting in China and presenting a roadmap for traditional media entities striving to remain relevant and impactful in the digital age.

MEDIA IDEOLOGICAL REPRESENTATION IN FRAMING THE BAJONESE IN TOROSIAJE VILLAGE, POHUWATO DISTRICT

Media can frame differently on the same object. The framing is heavily influenced by the ideology adopted by the media. The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of media ideology in framing the Bajonese in Torosiaje Village, Pohuwato Regency. The data for this study are in the form of vocabulary, phrases and sentences that reflect ideology in framing the Bajonese from three online mass media, namely kompas.com, mongabay.co.id, and lipunaratif.com. The data collected was analyzed using van Dijk's critical discourse analysis. The framing analysis of the three media was carried out on the aspects of micro structure, super structure and macro structure. The results of the analysis show that the three media analyzed frame the Bajonese differently. Kompas.com frames the Bajonese from the aspect of its uniqueness; mongabay.co.id frames the Bajonese from the aspect of the Bajonese's closeness to nature and the way the Bajonese preserves nature; and lipunaratif.com frame the Bajonese from an economic aspect. Kompas.com and mongabay.co.id rate the Bajonese positively, while lipunaratif.com evaluates the Bajonese negatively. This assessment is related to the desired behavior change by text producers through the framing that is done.

From Weinstein to Kavanaugh: Shifting coverage of sexual violence and the #MeToo movement across U.S. news media

ABSTRACT This study explores the framing strategies and language features of U.S. news coverage surrounding sexual violence and gender issues across the ideological media spectrum at two pivotal phases of the #MeToo movement: (1) during its initial rise as a hashtag-driven social movement in 2017 and (2) during the Kavanaugh nomination and confirmation in 2018. Using structural topic modeling, community detection, and feature extraction, we reveal a heightened employment of political framing during the Kavanaugh accusations. Topical prevalence and language use in news treatment also showed clear partisan differences, consistent with theories of moral foundation and issue ownership. Implications for research on news coverage of gender rights and framing of social movements are discussed.

Framing Analysis of the Suspected Corruption Case of Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo

Corruption is one of the deep-rooted problems in this country. One of the corruption cases that caught the public's attention and also received media attention was the corruption case of Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo or commonly known as SYL. SYL's corruption case was widely reported in various mass media, one of which was Detik.com. News is the result of media construction. The content of each news is determined by several factors such as media ideology, ownership factors, and individual factors from the news journalist. One method of analysis to see how the media constructs a news narrative can use news framing analysis. This research is descriptive qualitative research with a constructivist paradigm perspective. This study aims to analyze how Detik.com framed the news of SYL's suspected corruption case. The news used are 3 news articles that were posted at the time of SYL's alleged arrest (October 12-13, 2023). The framing analysis used is Robert N. Entman's framing model which has 4 main elements: 1. Problem identification, what the problem is framed as; 2. Diagnoses causes, causal logic related to the problem; 3. Make moral judgment, what moral values are highlighted by the media; and 4. Solution, what solutions are highlighted in the news frame. The results showed that Detik.com reported on SYL's corruption case which showed the firm action taken by the KPK for corruption cases in the Ministry of Agriculture. The total amount of corruption money of SYL and 2 other perpetrators KS and MH was reported 1 day after the day of being arrested and questioned. With this news, hopefully there will be no more corruption cases in the Ministry, or in other institutions.

Al-Khilaf ‘inda Daulah Qatr wa Mitsl al-Jins fi Ka’si al-'Alam 2022: Tahlil al-Khitab al-Naqd li Ruth Wodak

This research aims to reveal the alignment of the BBC news portal in the conflict that occurred at the 2022 World Cup. From October to the end of November 2022, the BBC will carry headlines about the Qatar-LGBTQ community-FIFA triangular conflict. This BBC news is interesting to examine critically through the lens of Ruth Wodak (2001), namely historical and discursive strategies. This study uses the Wodak paradigm to criticize the BBC news text about the conflict to reveal the media's ideology and partiality in this case. Wodak always involves historical aspects of discourse content because news texts never stand alone but are related to events in the past. The discursive aspect becomes a tool to frame how news is presented using language as a social practice. The research results state that the BBC is a pro-LGBTQ community. This inclination can be seen from the BBC's language presentation, word choice, and the language structure used by the BBC in presenting news. The BBC is also very skilled at inserting rejection of Qatar's principles through human rights presentations.

Believe it or not. The role of ideology as a predictor of trust in mainstream and social media during COVID-19

Introduction: The goal of this article is to analyze the extent to which ideology intervenes in citizens' trust in the news that appears in traditional and social media during COVID-19. Methodology: To do this, a quantitative approach based on the online survey technique is used. The questionnaire was launched in July 2021 through the Qualtrics platform and was answered by 2,803 citizens residing in Brazil (726), Spain (682), the United States (694), and India (702). Results: We found a connection between ideology and confidence in traditional media, strongly conditioned by the socio-political context. In addition, right-wing citizens tend to trust the information they receive from digital platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp better than left-wing citizens. This uneven impact of trust in the media could result in a heterogeneous effect of fake news, with right-wing citizens most likely believing political news appearing on social media Discussion and Conclusions: This article contributes to expanding prior knowledge about the trust in mainstream and social media, with considerable emphasis on the factors that have a predominant influence in four countries with different social and political structures and media systems: Spain, United States, India, and Brazil. In this context, it has been observed how ideology is an essential factor in all of them. When this relevant variable is controlled for, and despite what previous studies had determined (Newman et al., 2021), factors such as educational or income level do not seem to play a significant role.

Ideologi Media pada Pemberitaan Nusantara Sebagai Ibu Kota Baru Indonesia

This article reports the research results on framing three national media portals, namely Detik.com, 
 Kompas.com, and Tempo.Co regarding the decision to name Nusantara for the new capital city of Indonesia 
 (IKN) in East Kalimantan. This research aims to reveal whether the framing reflects each media’s ideology. The 
 paradigm of this research is constructivism with Robert M.Entman’s framing analysis method. This paper adopts 
 the social construction of reality, ideology, and media as the substantive theory and media framing as The text 
 theory. The results showed that the three media frames for naming Nusantara on IKN still contained problems 
 but differed in focus. Detik.com frames it as a power process, while Kompas.com and Tempo.co as a democratic 
 process. The Kompas.com and Tempo.co frames have reflected their media ideology. Meanwhile, Detik.com is 
 more pragmatic from the media business aspect.

What is a File on a Phone? Personal Information Management Practices Amongst WhatsApp Users

The file, as a means of sharing structured information across time and place, has spanned centuries of ICTs. Despite much CSCW research on file management practices in organizational desktop computing settings, little research has examined how files are managed and shared using mobile devices. Our research asks, how do mobile phones and mobile applications impact the personal information management (PIM) practices involving files for young adults? In this interview and task observation study, we examined the file management practices of mobile phone users (N=25), both Android and iOS owners who use the superapp WhatsApp. Superapps like WeChat and WhatsApp are increasingly characterized as technology of life for the majority world, particularly among mobile-first users. We find that many grammars of action related to managing digital files in personal computing and email contexts persist, but participants' sharing practices are influenced by media ideologies of friends, family, colleagues; and that their file management practices are shaped by the affordances of WhatsApp, as well as mobile operating systems and device hardware constraints. These results will be useful to researchers examining collective PIM practices; mobile communication practices between users and businesses via messaging apps; and theories of personal information practices related to the sharing and storage of digital files among mobile-first cohorts who increasingly share and access information via platforms and mobile applications.

Vague news and fake news

I consider a situation in which citizens consult a report by the media to learn the state of the world. Besides the true state of the world, the report can contain two types of inaccuracies: persistent bias following from the media's ideology and random noise. Employing a theoretical model, I show that citizens perform additional investigations if there is much variance in noise. In contrast, citizens are not affected by persistent bias as they can anticipate it. These predictions are confirmed through an empirical analysis of the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, in which I utilize sentiment data to differentiate persistent bias from noise in media reports. The results suggest that media quality is more of a concern than media neutrality.

Media Ideology and Representation of The National Police Image in The Online Media Frame (Framing Analysis of Teddy Minahasa Drug Case in the October 15, 2022 Edition of Koran Tempo Online)

One of the advantages of online journalism compared to conventional media is accessibility and speed in getting news. However, despite these advantages, online news portals are not automatically superior to conventional media in terms of the value of journalism products or news content. However, media ideology is very influential in the process of news construction, especially through the framing of news. No exception about the news of the drug case that is entangling a Two-Star Police General, Teddy Minahasa, of course, the media is interested in reporting the issue. The method used in this study includes framing analysis developed by Pan and Kosicky, while the approach used is qualitative. In this study, results were obtained that showed that the online tempo newspaper in reporting the tragedy was critical, informative and provocative. This indication can be seen from the results of the framing analysis carried out, namely the main framing of the news is that a Two-Star General is entangled in drugs is a controversial thing and certainly damages the institution of the National Police. With syntactic elements is the strengthening of framing by using unbalanced source quotes so that they are not neutral in reporting. As for the script element, strengthening and enriching the news paragraph related to the How element is carried out to minimize the why element in the news. For thematic elements, there are 3 major themes, namely: 1. A Two-Star General Dragged into a Drug Case 2. Chronology of occurrence of the case 3. Suppression of the negative image of the Indonesian National Police. In addition, the selection of sources as a closing news, to emphasize that the condition of the National Police organization is very bad, is used as a whip for the National Police institution to improve its organization. The last is the rhetorical element, in this element the use of newspaper covers and some graphics to emphasize the element of news that seems hyperbole and provocative and even seems negative. In addition, it can be concluded that the tempo tempo online newspaper according to its media ideology constructs reality through a framing process for the purpose of representing the negative image of the Indonesian National Police in a news story.

The medium is accountable: Metacommunication and media ideologies about voice messages in WhatsApp chats

Voice messages (VMs), which allow users to send recorded messages to other contacts, are a popular feature of instant messaging applications. Despite their popularity, linguistic research on VMs is still in its infancy. This study analyses metacommunication around VMs in mobile messaging conversations among WhatsApp users in Germany and Spain. It focuses on participants’ metacommunicative accounts (such as references, explanations, or motivations) of their preference for audio posting over other forms of communication (e.g. texting). Drawing on recent advances in digital conversation analysis, we examine how accounts placed in different sequential positions in messenger chats (preceding a VM, at the beginning or end of a VM, or after it has been sent) address diverse aspects of voice messaging (from either the sender’s or recipient’s perspective). We demonstrate that accounting accomplishes different social actions, such as framing a VM as something outstanding or worth apologising for. We argue that a sequential analysis of accounting and metacommunication offers rich insights into users’ media ideologies concerning the appropriateness and timing of text and voice messaging. Overall, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the growing importance of voice in mobile communication.

4chumblr’s divorce: Revisiting the online culture wars through the 2014 Tumblr-4chan raids

This text concerns conflict between users of 4chan and Tumblr, two groups said to have formed a vanguard to the ‘online culture wars’ of the last decade. Specifically, I focus on a 2014 clash known as the ‘Tumblr-4chan raids’. Predating the more infamous Gamergate controversy, I see this event as a useful alternative microcosm to study polarisation among online subcultures in the mid-2010s. Drawing from subculture studies, I first theorise cross-site clashes as puncturing a sense of ‘subcultural territoriality’ whereby an online platform is appropriated as a secluded refuge. Through a quali-quantitative archival study, I find that the raids were initiated and exacerbated by trolling 4channers rather than a clash between equal sides. I ultimately argue that the feud partially arose out of 4channers’ reactionary ‘media ideologies’ on the Internet, wherein sensitivity, empathy, and care were seen as incongruous with ideas on the online as brutal and unforgiving. Next to better-known political clashes between feminists and anti-feminists, the paper thus highlights the polarising role of media ideologies at the onset of the ‘online culture wars’ in the mid-2010s.
