Exploring the synergistic effects of graphene on the mechanical and vibrational response of kenaf/pineapple fiber‐reinforced hybrid composites

AbstractThe automotive, aerospace, and sports industries are increasingly utilizing hybrid composites made from natural fiber reinforcements. This study evaluated the performance of a composite made from kenaf and pineapple fibers, manufactured using the compression molding process, with graphene nanoparticles added at varying weight concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 wt%. Results showed that adding 0.5 wt% graphene increased the tensile, flexural, and impact strength of hybrid composite by 133.75%, 90.24%, and 25.67%, respectively. Microstructural analysis revealed that graphene integration has enhanced the interfacial bond between the fiber and the matrix, creating resin‐rich areas. Furthermore, the free vibrational analysis indicated that graphene‐infused composites exhibited higher natural frequencies, improving their energy‐absorbing capabilities. Water absorption tests demonstrated that the inclusion of graphene reduced water penetration by improving interfacial bonding, minimizing voids, and decreasing surface energy, which limited water pathways in the composite. Furthermore, the composites with 0.5 wt% graphene showed a contact angle of 80.8°, indicating lower hydrophilicity compared to neat composites, which had a contact angle of 70.7°. This research emphasizes the advantages of hybrid composite materials derived from kenaf and pineapple fibers, specifically for applications in vehicle interiors and construction, including wall panels and separators.Highlights Hybrid composite was prepared using the compression molding process. Adding 0.5 wt% graphene improved the mechanical properties of composites. Hybrid composites with lower wt% graphene had higher natural frequencies. The composites with 0.5 wt% graphene had better water absorption properties.

Preparation of multiaxial glass fiber/epoxy prepreg and its mechanical properties in composites

AbstractThis study investigates the mechanical properties of composites made from biaxial warp‐knitted glass fiber/epoxy prepregs (BW‐GF/EP) in comparison to plain woven glass fiber/epoxy prepregs (PW‐GF/EP). The BW‐GF/EP composites demonstrated superior tensile strength, with an increase of 9.5%, and bending strength, with an increase of 12.2%, compared to the PW‐GF/EP composites. Despite having a lower tensile modulus, the BW‐GF/EP composites exhibited 8.7% higher interlaminar shear strength. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that both materials had similar storage and loss moduli at lower temperatures, with PW‐GF/EP performing better at higher temperatures. Microscopy revealed that failure in PW‐GF/EP occurred at weave intersections, while BW‐GF/EP composites showed fiber rupture and delamination. The findings highlight the advantages of using biaxial warp‐knitted fabrics for improved composite performance.Highlights Developed biaxial warp‐knitted fabric prepregs to replace liquid molding techniques. Improved interlaminar shear strength, reducing delamination risks in composites. Achieved higher tensile and bending strength compared to plain weave composites. Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced POM Composite Filled With Maleamidic Acid Treated Carbon Nanotube

ABSTRACTIn order to attain improved mechanical properties of the carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyoxymethylene (POM) composite, maleamidic acid treated carbon nanotube (CNT) was deposited on carbon fiber. The mechanical properties of composites have been investigated. The tensile strength values of the treated CF/POM composites at all CNT mixing ratios are found to be higher than that of untreated one. The surface morphologies of the fractured surfaces of the composites were recorded using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to gain information about the fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion in the composites. The friction coefficient of all the CF/POM/CNT composites decrease as the load increases from 10 to 20 N under the same sliding speed of 1000 r/min. XPS results showed that the formation of C–O, C=O, and O–C=O based species give rise to chemical bonds of the CF and the POM.

Preparation of Cf/Si3N4 composites based on vat photopolymerization combined with precursor infiltration and pyrolysis

AbstractThe development of vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing technology has created the conditions for the fabrication of complex structured Si3N4 ceramics. However, Si3N4 ceramics produced through VPP often lack sufficient mechanical properties, which limiting their applications. This study introduces short carbon fibers (Cf) into the VPP‐Si3N4 ceramics, combined with the polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process, to prepare Cf/Si3N4 composites. The effect of Cf content on slurry preparation, green part printing, and mechanical properties of the Cf/Si3N4 composites was systematically investigated. The results indicate that Cf significantly enhances the mechanical properties of Cf/Si3N4 composites. At 6 wt.% Cf content, the samples exhibit the highest strength and fracture toughness, reaching 183.2 MPa and 6.2 MPa·m1/2, respectively, representing increases of 29.7% and 92.3% compared to samples without Cf. The improvement in mechanical properties is partly due to the ‘pinning effect’ of Cf, which enhances interlayer bonding strength in the printed green parts, positively impacting the overall mechanical properties of the composites. Additionally, inherent toughening mechanisms of Cf, such as fiber pull‐out, crack deflection, and crack bridging, further enhance the composite's mechanical properties. This study confirms the feasibility of using Cf to enhance the mechanical properties of VPP‐Si3N4 ceramic.

Fabrication and characterization of nacre-inspired metal/ceramic composites containing AlN nanowhiskers

Nacre-like composites prepared by infiltrating ice-templated porous ceramic-scaffolds with molten metal phases have successfully imitated the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of nacre at different lengthscales from macro to micro, but have not yet been able to replicate the nanoscale toughening mechanisms of nacre, which limits the further improvement in mechanical properties of the nacre-inspired composites. To resolve this issue, we prepared nacre-inspired Al/SiC composites containing AlN nanowhiskers by in-situ growth of whiskers during the spontaneous infiltration process of Al-10wt.%Mg alloy into an ice-templated porous SiC skeleton. It was found that the oxidation of the SiC skeleton had a significant impact on the growth of AlN nanowhiskers, as well as the phase composition and mechanical properties of the composites. When the skeleton was oxidized at 1100 ° C in air for 2 hours, the composite exhibited a large number of AlN whiskers and the optimal phase composition, while the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite reached their maximum values. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms, such as plastic deformation, crack deflection, multiple cracking, crack bridging, crack branching, and delamination, caused by the lamellar structure were observed. It was also found that the pull-out and bridging of the AlN whiskers provided strengthening and toughening effects at the nanoscale for the nacre-like composites.

Dynamic mechanical analysis of additively manufactured continuous Kevlar fiber-reinforced nylon composites across variable fiber orientations

This study examines the dynamic mechanical properties of composites made via continuous filament fabrication, an additive manufacturing (AM) technique. Four Nylon/Kevlar samples with varying fiber orientations were produced, each with a 0.1 mm layer height and 3 mm total thickness, resulting in a fiber volume fraction of 15.71 % to 18.44 %. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to assess viscoelastic behavior, focusing on storage modulus, loss modulus, and damping factor (tan delta). The specimen F_NK1 exhibited the highest initial storage modulus, with gradual stiffness loss at higher settling temperatures (Ts), while F_NK2 showed a steeper decline, and F_NK3 and F_NK4 had lower initial moduli and greater temperature sensitivity.

INFLUENCE OF FILLER SIZE ON THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF THE POLYMER MATRIX

Purpose. The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) particle size on the mechanical properties of a polymer composite with added chopped glass fiber, as well as to explore the interaction between aluminum oxide particles and chopped glass fiber. Research methods. Specimens were tested for tensile strength according to DSTU EN ISO 527-5:2018. Testing was conducted using an MTS Criterion Model 43 universal testing machine with a maximum load of 50 kN. Metallographic analysis was performed using a KEYENCE VHX microscope at magnifications of 50× and 500×. The microstructure of the polymer matrix was determined on unetched samples. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out using a JEOL JSM-5510LV microscope. Results. The influence of introducing different sizes of aluminum oxide fraction on the polymer matrix was studied. It was found that with an increase in the fraction size, the strength of the polymer composition decreases. Additionally, the interaction between chopped glass fiber and various fractions of aluminum oxide on the mechanical characteristics and morphology of the connection with the polymer composition was investigated. Scientific novelty. The interaction of chopped fiber with aluminum oxide fractions may affect the mechanical properties of the composite, such as strength, stiffness, and elasticity. Investigation of the morphology of the connection between chopped fiber and aluminum oxide fractions can help understand how they interact within the composite structure. This includes analyzing the adhesion between components, the structure of junctions, and possible defects that may arise during the manufacturing process. Studying this interaction opens up opportunities for the development of new composite materials with improved properties and diverse applications in industry, construction, aviation, automotive, and other fields. Practical value. The practical significance lies in refining manufacturing technologies and implementing new materials in industry. The ability to control the mechanical properties of composites by changing the size of aluminum oxide fractions can contribute to the creation of more efficient materials for the production of automobiles, aircraft, building constructions, and more. Additionally, understanding the interaction between chopped glass fiber and aluminum oxide fractions may open up new possibilities for developing composites with unique mechanical characteristics that meet the requirements of modern technologies and industrial production.

Adjustment of Mechanical Properties of 3D Printed Continuous Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Thermoset Composites by Print Parameter Adjustments.

Reinforcing thermoset polymers with continuous carbon fiber (CF) tow has emerged as a promising avenue to overcome the thermal and mechanical performance limitations of 3D printed polymeric structures for load-bearing applications. Unlike traditional methods, manufacturing continuous fiber-reinforced composites by 3D printing has the unique capability of locally varying the mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, continuous CF thermoset composite specimens were printed with varying line spacing, resin flow rate, and nozzle sizes. The resin flow rates for different line spacings and nozzle sizes were optimized by topographic analysis. Printed composite mechanical properties were evaluated, and their trends were correlated with the trend of print parameter changes. Results showed that tensile strength and modulus could be altered and improved by ~50% by adjusting the printing process parameters. Higher composite strength and modulus were obtained by shortening the line spacing and nozzle diameter.

Mechanical properties of aramid and UHMWPE thermoplastic composites: numerical and experimental trials

The out-of-plane behaviour of 8 different composites exposed to very high deformation rates and non-standard conditions was investigated in our previous studies. The mechanical properties of these composites have been evaluated through tests conducted at deformation rates comparable to those experienced during explosions. Based on the relevant test results, this study conducted a numerical analysis of 3 best-performing Aramid UD GS3000, Artec Aramid/Woven Aramid CT736, and H62 UD-UHMWPE-reinforced composites. In this regard, LS-DYNA's MAT54 model was compared with other failure mechanics-based models and preferred because it requires less experimental data and can simulate damage progression in dynamic failures. Since the samples used in the study were non-standard, quasi-static tensile and shear tests were performed based on the loads to which the composites would be exposed to create an accurate numerical analysis. Both tensile and shear strength values of the Artec Aramid/Woven Aramid CT736 composite are higher than those of the Aramid UD GS3000 and H62 UD-UHMWPE composites. When the numerical analysis results were compared with the tensile test data, compliance rates of 99.84% for Aramid UD GS3000 reinforced composite, 99.34% for Artec Aramid/Woven Aramid CT736 reinforced composite, and 96.42% for H62 UD-UHMWPE reinforced composite were determined. The analysis showed that the shear stress-strain curves provided 100% agreement at the maximum stress value.

Molecular dynamics study on mechanical properties and plastic deformation mechanism of GNPs/Mg composites

This study utilizes molecular dynamics methods to embedded GNPs (graphene nanosheets) of uniform size and thickness into single crystal Mg, establishing a GNPs/Mg composite model. The mechanical properties and plastic deformation behavior of the composite under various compression conditions (volume fraction of GNPs, strain rate, and temperature) are investigated. The results indicate that uniformly distributed GNPs enhance load transfer and provide dispersion strengthening, effectively improving the composite's mechanical properties. As the volume fraction of GNPs increases, the yield stress of the composite first increases and then decreases. When the volume fraction of GNPs is 3.9%, both the yield stress and Young's modulus of the composite reach their maximum values of 9.16GPa and 108.83GPa, respectively. The uniformly dispersed GNPs constrain dislocations on prismatic and pyramidal planes, thereby suppressing twinning deformation. Consequently, dislocation slip predominantly occurs as 1/3<-1100> partial dislocations on the (0001) basal plane. Young's modulus is not sensitive to strain rate; as the strain rate increases from 0.0025Å·ps⁻¹ to 0.0125Å·ps⁻¹, the yield stress rises from 8.50GPa to 10.42GPa. At high strain rates, only some dislocation sources are activated, and the number of 1/3<-1100> partial dislocations decreases with increasing strain rate. Within the temperature range of 100K to 500K, both the elastic modulus and yield stress of the GNPs/Mg composite decrease with increasing temperature.

Influence of dammar resin on the mechanical properties of composites reinforced with corn husk and paper waste

This study aimed to investigate the influence of dammar resin on the mechanical properties of composite materials reinforced with corn husk and paper waste laminates. Different percentages of dammar resin (50%, 60%, and 70%) were added to the matrix while keeping the reinforcement constant. For all samples, the ratio was maintained at 40% matrix and 60% reinforcement. With the experimental results obtained, statistical analyses were conducted: two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Levene’s test, Shapiro-Wilk test, and ANOVA post hoc (with Bonferroni correction). The null hypothesis stated that dammar resin does not influence the mechanical properties. For all tests considered, the null hypothesis was rejected (p &lt; 0.05), the variances were homogeneous (p &gt; 0.05), and the data followed a normal distribution (p &gt; 0.05). It was found that dammar resin had a significant influence on the mechanical properties as the percentage increased from 50% to 70% (p &lt; 0.0083). For each test, based on already known premises, an explanation of the phenomenon that could occur due to the insertion of dammar resin was provided, serving to complement and validate the statistical estimations.

Effect of thermal shocks on the interfacial bond strength of sandwich composites built with rigid and soft materials produced through extrusion process

The mechanical behavior and adhesion strength of the sandwich composite, which consists of a flexible and a rigid material, were examined using extruded polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Three types of binders were combined with the appropriate hardeners to bond the extruded materials. The fabricated specimens are subjected to a different number of thermal shock cycles, with a maximum and minimum temperature of 80 °C and −18 °C, respectively. The sandwich composite's mechanical properties, including tensile, flexural, and impact strength, were assessed after 20, 40, and 80 cycles of thermal shock. The results indicated that the ductility of PLA material was significantly impacted by the thermal shock cycles. After completing the maximal thermal shock cycles, the composites joined with polyester resin exhibited a lower strength reduction in the impact specimens. Maximum tensile strength of 22.3 MPa, flexural strength of 31.6 MPa, and impact strength of 8.3 J were recorded prior to the application of thermal shocks to the specimens. The specimens that were bonded with epoxy resin recorded the maximal tensile, flexural, and impact strength. Following the thermal shock cycles, the composites bonded with epoxy resin exhibited a lesser reduction in tensile and flexural strength, while the composites bonded with polyester resin showed a lower strength reduction for impact specimens. The tensile and flexural specimens encountered a 7.54 % and 20.24 % reduction in strength, respectively, after undergoing 80 cycles of thermal shocks. The impact specimens experienced an 8.62 % reduction in strength.

The effect of stacking sequences on energy absorption in axial crushing of CFRP stanchions for the cargo floor structure of airplanes

One of the remaining challenges for advancing the wide application of composite materials is to further improve the mechanical properties of composites. The fiber/matrix damage phenomenon produced by the composite model under axial loading has been observed through the establishment of a numerical model of composite damage. Axial crush tests have been performed on C-type carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) stanchions for the cargo floor structure of transport category airplanes using a finite element approach. The failure morphology and crashworthiness parameters of the specimens with different fiber layups have been recorded, and the effects of fiber orientation and angle of entrapment on the crashworthiness of the composites have been investigated. The present study demonstrates that the crashworthiness of composites can be effectively improved by fiber orientation design. Appropriate addition of 45° layer and 90° layer can effectively improve the crashworthiness of C-type CFRP laminates, and the performance of the two-angle and spiral laminates design is improved by 26% and 19%, respectively.

ABSTRACT The article is the third part of a multi-directional analysis of the possibilities, advisability and validity of using natural plant fibers (NPFs) as a reinforcement for polymer structural composites that can be used in the shipbuilding industry in Poland. As a result of the analysis of macroeconomic indicators and natural and non-natural factors regarding NPFs, a representative selection of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) was made as the raw material to be used to reinforce these composites. Methods and test results are presented enabling comparison of the physical and mechanical properties of the new pro-ecological construction material–hemp fiber reinforced polymer (HFRP), reinforced with fabric made of unmodified and chemically modified hemp fibers.

Performance of glass epoxy composites under combined effect of in‐plane fiber waviness with circular cutout through tensile test, and image processing technique

AbstractPresent study comprehensively explores the phenomenon of in‐plane fiber waviness in glass/epoxy fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites. Utilizing a pioneering technique that employs a semi‐circular bar to induce controlled fiber waviness, coupled with image processing using OpenCV library in Python coding for precise measurement and analysis of in‐plane fiber waviness. This defect is commonly found in components fabricated with fiber‐reinforced composites. During the process of manufacturing fibers may deviate from their intended orientation due to process variables or resin flow dynamics. Understanding in‐plane fiber waviness is crucial due to its impact on mechanical properties of composites. It is essential for optimizing manufacturing processes and ensuring enhanced structural performance in diverse engineering applications through analysis of strength and failure mechanism. A novel study was conducted by introducing a circular cutout within the fiber waviness region to investigate the combined effect of multiple defects. The experimental tensile test reveals that as waviness ratio (WR) increases a significant decrease in its tensile strength and vice versa. The study incorporates scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image analysis to examine composite failure. By advancing the understanding of in‐plane fiber waviness and its implications, this research significantly contributes to ongoing efforts in composite design and optimization.Highlights Adopting a cutting‐edge method to create controlled fiber waviness that makes use of a semi‐circular bar. Development of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites for Additive Manufacturing and Multi-Material Structures in Sustainable Applications

This study investigates the mechanical properties of carbon and natural fiber-reinforced Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) composites produced via Additive Manufacturing (AM), focusing on Material Extrusion (MEX). The performance of filaments made from pre-consumer recycled PLA (rPLA) and PETG, with varying weight percentages of hemp and jute short fibers, was evaluated through tensile testing. Comparisons were made between the original filaments (PLA, carbon fiber-reinforced PLA [CF–PLA], and PETG) and their recycled versions. Multi-material compositions—neat PLA and PETG, single-graded (PLA + CF–PLA, PETG + CF–PETG), and multi-gradient (PLA + CF–PLA + PLA, PETG + CF–PETG + PETG)—were analyzed for mechanical properties. Optical microscope images of multi-material specimens were captured before and after fracture to assess failure mechanisms. The results indicate that the original CF–PETG filaments achieved a tensile strength of 50.14 MPa, which is higher than rPLA, PLA, and CF–PLA by 2%, 70%, and 6.7%, respectively. The re-manufactured PLA filaments reinforced with 7 wt% hemp fibers exhibited a tensile strength of 38.8 MPa, representing a 29% increase compared to the original PLA filaments and a 26% improvement over recycled PLA. Additionally, incorporating 7% jute fiber into PETG resulted in a tensile strength of 62.38 MPa, reflecting a 12% improvement over the original PETG filaments and a 15% increase compared to the recycled PETG filaments. Among specimens produced by AM, CF–PLA and rPLA demonstrated the highest tensile and compressive strengths. However, multi-material composites showed reduced mechanical performance compared to neat PLA and PETG, highlighting the need for improved interlayer adhesion. This study emphasizes the importance of optimizing material combinations and fiber reinforcement to enhance the mechanical properties of composites produced through AM.

Strengthening behaviors and strength differential effect of nano-ZrB2-particle/AA6xxx alloy composites

This paper reports the correlation between strengthening behaviors and strength differential effect of nano-ZrB2-particle/AA6xxx alloy composites. The microstructures were characterized and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. This study examines the different strengthening behaviors under tension and compression. The changes of strain direction surrounding the nano-ZrB2 particles during the plastic deformation were analyzed with the aid of finite element analysis. The distribution of rotation angles of the strain directions indicates a different symmetric characteristic in compression and tension. The established relationship between strength differential effect and strengthening behaviors suggests that the asymmetry of strain surrounding the nano-ZrB2 particles during the deformation is responsible for the strength differential effect.

Simulation and mechanical testing of 3D printing shin guard composite materials

ABSTRACT This study critically examines the composite material's mechanical properties and performance for 3D-printed shin guards. It contains a thermoplastic polymer matrix with short carbon fibre reinforcement. Shin guard stress and deformation under impact loading were modelled using FEA models. The composite material was 3D-printed and tested for tensile, flexural, and impact properties. The entire cycle of FEA models and careful mechanical testing allows for the development and evaluation of new composite materials and designs. The finite element analysis, such as maximum von Mises stress, is 2890.5 MPa. The carbon fibre-reinforced composite's mechanical properties, including tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance, showed a considerable improvement over those of the unreinforced polymer. The solid design could be heavier and less adaptable than the pattern. Compared to unreinforced polymers, carbon fibre improves strength, stiffness, and impact resistance for the 3D-printed composite. This result thus proves that 3D-printed carbon fibre-reinforced composites could make superior sports protective equipment like shin guards. The FEA calculations and extensive mechanical testing provide a dependable framework for creating and testing these new composite materials and systems.
