Influence of recycled rice husk ash filler on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures: A mortar scale analysis

Using industrial or agro-industrial wastes as alternative raw materials to manufacture asphalt mixtures brings advantages such as conserving natural resources and reducing environmental problems. Among these wastes are (a) rice husk ash (RHA) and (b) recycled rice husk ash (RRHA), obtained by controlled and uncontrolled combustion of rice husks, respectively. Previous studies have shown a high potential for RHA to be used as a filler in asphalt mixtures. However, the existing literature on RRHA usage and its corresponding applications is limited. Based on this background, the main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of RRHA when used as a filler on the mechanical properties of asphalt mortars/mixtures. For this purpose, the behavior of asphalt mortars (a combination of asphalt binder blended with sand and RRHA filler) was evaluated using the dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) with the three-point bending test. The test results suggest that RRHA reduces the workability and ductility of asphalt mortars. Furthermore, while RRHA indicated superior moisture-damage tolerance, brittle RRHA asphalt mortars with reduced fatigue strength were also produced. The optimum RRHA dosage for optimizing the asphalt mortar's mechanical properties/performance should not exceed 13.5% on the total weight of the mortar for the materials and test conditions. As a supplement to this study's findings, further research involving the combination of RRHA with conventional fillers and different materials (i.e., asphalt binders and aggregate types) is suggested to quantitatively assess the scaled-up mechanical performance of the asphalt mortars and their subsequent validation in asphalt mixtures.

Improvements in Physical and Mechanical Properties of Asphalt by Addition of Low-cost Few-layers Graphene (FLG)

Physical and mechanical properties of asphalt have been improved by adding of few-layers graphene (FLG). FLG was obtained from a simple, low-cost and environmentally friendly liquid shear exfoliation method using a kitchen blender. The melted asphalt at temperature of 150oC was mixed with FLG at various concentrations (10 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml and 30 mg/ml) and contents (0 wt%, 3 wt%, 6 wt%, and 9 wt%) by weight of asphalt. The homogenized mixture was taken for penetration and softening point tests, while the mixing with aggregates was carried out for Marshall stability and asphalt concrete flow tests. The characteristics of void in mixture (VIM), void filled with asphalt (VFA), and void in mineral aggregate (VMA) were also investigated. The penetration values decreased (or the asphalt hardness increased) linearly with increasing of FLG concentration and FLG content. The softening point of asphalt increased as the increasing of FLG concentration and FLG content in asphalt with the average softening point increase of about 5%. The Marshall stability and asphalt concrete flow increased with increasing of FLG concentrations and FLG content. However, the addition of FLG did not affect the VIM, VFA or VMA values. Overall, the addition of FLG improves the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt and has promising prospects due to low-cost and eco-friendly nature of FLG.

Effect of Acid Rain on Mechanical Properties and Aging Mechanism of Asphalt

Through the preparation of nitric acid–type acid rain, mixed acid rain, and sulfuric acid–type acid rain, an experimental method of periodic soaking of asphalt was developed. Then, using a four-component test, the four-component mass fraction of aging asphalt was obtained. The change characteristics of functional groups of aged asphalt were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, and the aging mechanism of aged asphalt was analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry. Based on molecular dynamics theory, the bulk modulus and shear modulus of aged asphalt were calculated by establishing a molecular model of acid rain and a molecular model of aged asphalt. The diffusion coefficient, cohesive energy density, solubility, and other parameters of the aging asphalt molecular model were calculated. The influence of acid rain on the mechanical properties of asphalt was explored at the molecular level, and the mechanism of acid rain aging asphalt was explored. The results show that sulfuric acid–type acid rain has the greatest impact on the mechanical properties of asphalt and causes the most serious aging of asphalt, followed by mixed acid rain, and nitric acid–type acid rain has a relatively small impact on the mechanical properties of asphalt and the aging of asphalt.

Study on the effect and mechanism of oyster shell powder on asphalt

ABSTRACT In order to explore the effect of oyster shell powder on asphalt. In this paper, oyster shell powder with a fineness of 40 mesh was added to the matrix asphalt in accordance with 3 %, 6 %, 9 %, 12 %, 15 %, and 18 % to prepare oyster shell powder modified asphalt. By establishing the molecular model of oyster shell powder modified asphalt with different contents, the influence of oyster shell powder on the mechanical properties of asphalt was explored from the molecular level. The modification mechanism of oyster shell powder modified asphalt was analyzed in detail from different scales by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic shear rheology and viscosity tests. The results show that oyster shell powder has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of asphalt. When the content of oyster shell powder is 12 %, oyster shell powder has the greatest influence on the mechanical properties of asphalt.

Analysis of high-temperature performance of polymer-modified asphalts through molecular dynamics simulations and experiments

• Propose a new polymer-modified asphalt using method of molecular dynamics. • Analyzed the solubility parameters and interaction energy calculated. • Evaluate the compatibility index of polymer-modified asphalt. • Compared and analyzed the temperature sensitivity and high temperature properties. • Provided a new idea and direction of high-performance asphalt pavement. The low durability of asphalt pavements is a key problem limiting successful highway operation and construction; the high-temperature stability of asphalt is an important factor affecting asphalt-pavement durability. To improve the thermal stability of base asphalt, a new polymer-modified asphalt is developed by using polyurethane (PU) as a modifier. Moreover, dynamic research is conducted on the microscopic and mechanical properties of asphalt through molecular dynamics simulations, and the high-temperature performance of the new polymer-modified asphalt is comprehensively evaluated and analyzed through micro- and macro-tests. First, through molecular dynamics and using the three-dimensional materials science simulation software, an asphalt molecular model, a PU molecular model, and an asphalt PU Blend System model are constructed and the correctness of the models is verified. Second, the compatibility index of polymer-modified asphalt is evaluated using solubility parameters and interaction energies calculated in the simulation. Finally, the temperature sensitivity and high-temperature properties of Matrix502-modified asphalt and polymer-modified asphalt are compared and analyzed by using the Brookfield viscosity method and through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the self-made new polymer-modified asphalt exhibits good thermal storage stability and good high-temperature stability. In addition, a dynamic study on the microcosmic and mechanical properties of the molecules in the asphalt system is conducted through molecular dynamics simulations, and comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the asphalt performance are performed in combination with the microscopic and macroscopic tests. This study promote the research and development of high-performance materials for asphalt pavements.

Correlation Analysis between Mechanical Properties and Fractions Composition of Oil-Rejuvenated Asphalt.

To clarify the intrinsic relationship between the mechanical properties of asphalt and its fraction composition, the SARA fraction composition and six macroscopic mechanical properties (critical cracking temperature (TCR), fatigue life (Nf), non-recoverable creep (Jnr3.2), penetration, ductility, and softening point) were investigated for 16 asphalt samples. Fraction contents of asphaltene and aromatic are strongly correlated with TCR and ductility (R2 > 0.92) that characterize the ability of asphalt to adapt to deformation at low and medium temperatures. Heavy fraction (asphaltene and resins) content is also strongly correlated with (R2 > 0.90) penetration and Jnr3.2 that characterize the resistance of the asphalt to overall deformation at medium and high temperatures. To express the changes in the four fractions simultaneously with one indicator, a statistic, average deviation of the fractions between the given asphalt and its original (marked σ), is introduced in this study to characterize the degree of asphalt aging based on the fraction changes. It normalizes the four simultaneous change indicators (percentage of SARA fractions) during asphalt aging into one indicator. This new indicator has a strong correlation with several mechanical performance indicators of asphalt, where it is strongly correlated with TCR (R2 > 0.90), ductility, and penetration, which are also well correlated with Jnr3.2 (R2 > 0.85), Nf (R2 > 0.75), and softening point (R2 > 0.75).

Using nanoclay hydrophilic bentonite as a filler to enhance the mechanical properties of asphalt

Higher traffic loads on the wheels, increased traffic volumes, and exposure to changing weather conditions result in increasing the road stresses and strains, putting the paving layers in danger of degradation such as fatigue, stripping, cracking, and rutting. A tremendous number of studies and trials have been conducted to modify asphalt to have a longer service life, less maintenance, be cheaper, and be more environmentally friendly. Recently, nanotechnology has proven very beneficial in all industries, including asphalt. It can be used to enhance the asphalt's mechanical properties. Using nano clay in asphalt is expected to improve the mechanical properties and the service life of the asphalt. So the main objective of this study is to investigate the performance of nano clay hydrophilic bentonite in improving the physical characteristics of asphalt concrete. This study uses nano clay with various replacement ratios as fillers to the ordinary used limestone filler in asphalt concrete. The used replacement percentages were (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100). The experimental tests that were conducted in this study include Marshall Stability (MS), Marshall Flow (MF), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), theoretical maximum specific gravity (Gmm) and air voids (AV). The results showed a noticeable enhansment in the behavior of the asphalt mix with increasing the replacement percentage by nanoclay. Also, it was found that the 60% replacement rate by nano clay has the highest Marshall stability with an increase of 93%, also the lowest flow with a decrease of 25% compared to the control asphalt mix.

АНАЛІЗ ЕКСПЕРИМЕНТАЛЬНИХ ДОСЛІДЖЕНЬ ФІЗИКО-МЕХАНІЧНИХ ВЛАСТИВОСТЕЙ ЕПОКСИАСФАЛЬТОБЕТОНУ ДЛЯ ЙОГО ЗАСТОСУВАННЯ У ЯКОСТІ МОСТОВОГО ПОКРИТТЯ НА АВТОМОБІЛЬНИХ ДОРОГАХ

Introduction. This paper considers the issue of improving the quality of coatings on road reinforced concrete, reinforced concrete bridges or metal bridges with orthotropic slab. The constructive decisions of increase of working capacity and fatigue durability of asphalt concrete coverings are offered. The results of the analysis of experimental researches of physical and mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt concrete are given. The efficiency of epoxy components in asphalt concrete mixtures, which significantly improve the physical and mechanical properties of bitumen, is shown. According to the results of experimental laboratory tests, a comparative analysis of the properties of epoxy asphalt concrete and source asphalt concrete on viscous and rarefied bitumen is given. Also, the influence of the duration and temperature of curing of epoxy components on the properties of epoxy asphalt concrete was analyzed. Problem statement. In today’s conditions of high-speed intensive traffic, high traffic loads and adverse weather and climatic factors that occur in our country, increasing the durability of pavements on bridges to increase service life and reduce costs associated with maintenance, requires special attention. One of the effective ways to improve the quality and durability of asphalt pavements on road bridges is the modification of bitumen by using as the main material thermosetting polymer additives, in our case – epoxy components (epoxy resin and its hardener). Objective. The purpose of the analysis of experimental studies of physical and mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt concrete is to study the possibility of its use as a pavement on highways. As well as confirmation of efficiency in solving the problem of achieving increased fatigue life of such coatings at different load frequencies by increasing track resistance, strength, crack resistance and at the same time solving no less important issue to minimize the cost of repair and construction work during bridge operation. Materials and methods. Asphalt concrete coverings on orthotropic or reinforced concrete slab of the carriageway of the bridge with improved physical and mechanical properties due to the use of thermosetting polymer additives as a bitumen modifier. Results. The analysis of experimental researches of physical and mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt concrete is carried out and efficiency of its application for improvement of quality of coverings on road bridges and increase of their durability is defined. A set of studies was conducted to compare the properties of epoxy asphalt concrete and source asphalt concrete on viscous and rarefied bitumen. Conclusions. To increase the fatigue life of asphalt pavements on road bridges in modern conditions of high traffic intensity in our region with a wide range of operating temperatures, it is necessary to develop new solutions for the use of building materials. That is why the study of physical and mechanical properties of asphalt concretes improved by thermosetting polymer additives in order to determine their true effectiveness in improving track resistance, strength and crack resistance of coatings based on them is an urgent issue today. The use of epoxy-asphalt concrete coating on orthotropic or reinforced concrete slab of the carriageway of the bridge requires special attention in establishing the optimal duration and curing temperature of epoxy components, which can dramatically affect its physical and mechanical properties and determine the cooking technology. Combined Peridynamics and Discrete Multiphysics to Study the Effects of Air Voids and Freeze-Thaw on the Mechanical Properties of Asphalt.

This paper demonstrates the use of peridynamics and discrete multiphysics to assess micro crack formation and propagation in asphalt at low temperatures and under freezing conditions. Three scenarios are investigated: (a) asphalt without air voids under compressive load, (b) asphalt with air voids and (c) voids filled with freezing water. The first two are computed with Peridynamics, the third with peridynamics combined with discrete multiphysics. The results show that the presence of voids changes the way cracks propagate in the material. In asphalt without voids, cracks tend to propagate at the interface between the mastic and the aggregate. In the presence of voids, they ‘jump’ from one void to the closest void. Water expansion is modelled by coupling Peridynamics with repulsive forces in the context of Discrete Multiphysics. Freezing water expands against the voids’ internal surface, building tension in the material. A network of cracks forms in the asphalt, weakening its mechanical properties. The proposed methodology provides a computational tool for generating samples of ‘digital asphalt’ that can be tested to assess the asphalt properties under different operating conditions.

Experimental evaluation of ceramic waste as filler in hot mix asphalt

Filler, as a component of hot mix asphalt, has an important role in improving the mechanical properties and extending the lifespan of asphalt. This research is conducted to evaluate the use of ceramic waste as filler and its effect on the mechanical properties of asphalt. For this purpose, ceramic waste powder was replaced with conventional limestone filler at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% proportions. Marshall stability, moisture sensitivity, four-point bending fatigue, and wheel track tests were used to investigate the effect of ceramic waste on asphalt performance. The results indicated that the Marshall stability was enhanced in all replacement ratios of the ceramic (23% increment for the maximum rate of substitution). Also, the resistance of the asphalt to moisture improved by approximately 5% after using 100% ceramic waste powder. In addition, the results showed that this rate of substitution as filler of HMA increased the fatigue life (approximately 600 cycles more than control specimens) and rutting resistance (reduction of almost 31% of the rut depth). Therefore, this waste material first improved the mechanical properties of HMA, and can also be used as a suitable approach for recycling this waste material.

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of Asphalt Mixture Modified with RPET

The major objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of Rynite Polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) particles on the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt by conducting several tests such as; resilient modulus, dynamic creep and wheel tracking test. Various RPET contents namely; 3, 5 and 7% by weight of bitumen were added to asphalt mixture using wet method. From resilient modulus test, it was found that the stiffness of modified mixtures with RPET increased compared with unmodified asphalt mixture. The improvement of stiffness for intermediate and high temperatures was between 68 % for 3% of PET, while 3.88% for 7% PET respectively. The results of dynamic creep have shown a better improvement to rutting, the 3% of RPET showed the best resistance to permanent deformation compared to control sample. The results of wheel tracking test proved that the modification of asphalt mixture with RPET improved significantly the resist to permanent deformation (rutting). The addition of RPET has good performance in hot mix asphalt.

Investigation on performance of polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/SBR compound-modified asphalt mixture at high and low temperatures

With the aim of improving the asphalt and asphalt mixture performance at high and low temperatures, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were added to achieve a modification in this study. The effects of PPA and SBR compound modifiers on the rheological and mechanical properties of asphalt and asphalt mixture were characterised by conventional and novelty tests. It was demonstrated that PPA can dramatically improve the anti-rutting performance of base and SBR-modified asphalt and mixture. In addition, resistance against low-temperature cracking of PPA/SBR compound-modified asphalt and mixture was also desirable. Furthermore, the performance indicators were ranked and analysed. As a consequence, 0.75%PPA/2.5%SBR is beneficial to achieve the desired properties comprehensively. The novel tests mentioned in the paper are proper and recommended. Effective indicators have been proposed for their potential to characterise the performance of asphalt and mixture.

Studies on surface energy of asphalt and aggregate at different scales and bonding property of asphalt–aggregate system

Adhesion between asphalt and aggregate is rather essential to the service performance and durability of asphalt pavement. The surface energy of the asphalt binder and aggregate was proved effective to characterise the adhesive behaviour of asphalt–aggregate system, which had been studied with various measuring methods in recent years. However, most of these existing methods focus on the interfacial bonding characteristics at a macro-scale. The physical and mechanical properties of asphalt and aggregate at a micro-scale still needed to be clarified. In this study, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was introduced to measure and calculate the surface energy of the asphalt and aggregate at nano-scale based on the classical Johnson–Kendall–Roberts and Fowkes theory. The surface energy of the asphalt and aggregate were also measured and determined with Sessile Drop method at millimetre scale. These test results were then related to the bonding property of the asphalt–aggregate system with a pull-off test. The aging was found to have a significant effect on the surface energy of the asphalt binder and thus affect the bonding performance between asphalt binder and aggregate. The measured surface energy of asphalt and aggregate by AFM method was found to represent the surface characteristics of materials and be able to characterise the bonding property between asphalt and aggregate.

Improving of Temperature Susceptibility of Asphalt 60/70 using Synthesized Reactive Rubber Nanoparticles for use in Different Climate

The use of reactive polymers as modifiers for asphalt appears promising. Asphalt penetration grade 60/70 cannot be used in coating applications for its long drying time at ordinary temperature and for its brittleness at very cold temperature. This material is very cheap as compared to blown asphalt that usually used in industrial applications. This study aims to use reactive polymers in modification of soft asphalt to produce very specific asphaltic material for use in infrastructure applications especially coating instead of highly expensive materials. The new asphaltic material is low cost and has high quality performance at low temperature. To achieve the aim of study, RRNP was used as additive to modify asphalt in percentages of 3, 5, 7 and 10% w/w. The prepared RRNP was then tested for their particles size using DLS and TEM, SEM, 1HNMR. RRNP was used to modify the thermo mechanical properties of asphalt via forming chemical bond, and the changing in mechanical and thermal properties of the mixes as well as the storage stability were studied. Also, the morphology (SEM), thermal characterization (TGA), Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), rheological tests, while, the prepared coatings were applied to carbon steel panel and tested for bending, Abarsion test and impact test were detected. Overall, the results show that the chosen modifiers are the best so far in the modification of soft asphalt to suit the industrial applications in different climate conditions.

Correlation Between Aggregate to Aggregate Contact and Mechanical Properties of HMA Mixture

The mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture are directly related to the internal structure. Earlier studies have suggested that aggregate-to-aggregate contact maybe a significant contributor to the mechanical properties of HMA mixes. In this study, the mechanical properties of HMA mixture, quantified by Marshall Stability, Flow and Marshall Quotient, were related to the internal structure in terms of aggregate-to-aggregate contact. For development of a model, field core samples were taken from Binder and Topeka layers at different sites. A total of 21 different HMA mixes were obtained. An advanced 2-dimensional Image Processing and Analysis System (i.e., iPas) was used to characterize the internal structure of the cores. The test results indicated that there is a strong correlation between aggregate-to-aggregate contact and mechanical properties of HMA mixture. This is an indication that aggregate-to-aggregate contactis a significant contributor to the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete .

As a result, significant alterations can occur to the desired physical and/or mechanical properties of asphalt. A common practice to alleviate asphalt aging has been to employ different chemical additives or modifiers as antioxidants. The current state of knowledge in asphalt oxidation and antioxidant evaluation is centered on determining the degradation of asphalt physical properties, mainly the viscosity and ductility. Such practices, although meeting direct engineering needs, do not contribute to the fundamental understanding of the aging and anti-oxidation mechanisms, and thereby developing anti-aging strategies. From this standpoint, this study was initiated to study the chemical and physical bases of asphalt oxidation, as well as the anti-oxidation mechanisms of bio-based antioxidants using the coniferyl-alcohol lignin as an example. A quantum chemistry (QC) based chemophysical environment is developed, in which the various chemical reactions between asphalt component species and oxygen, as well as the incurred physical changes are studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to validate the modified and unmodified asphalt models.

Improvements of properties of asphalt by poly(methyl methacrylate) additives

This article presents the effect of adding poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with different molecular weights on the mechanical properties of asphalt in terms of durability, strength, and resistance to rutting. By controlling the time of reaction we obtained PMMA of two different molecular weights: PMMA1 and PMMA2. The ageing properties of polymer modified asphalts were studied using the thin film over (oven) a test. A hot storage stability test was carried out for polymer modified binder. The physical properties of asphalt modified with PMMA including penetration value and softening point were examined at two different temperatures. Resilient modulus test was evaluated by a Universal Testing Machine. Results showed that an incorporation of PMMA into asphalt binder has significantly improved its properties under studies. Indirect tensile strength test and durability performance of the modified asphalts was evaluated as well. The resulted modification was found to be dependent on the polymer molecular weight. The PMMA1 exhibited effective and cheerful results.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Cadmium Sulfide/Polymethylmethacrylate Nanocomposite and Their Effect on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Asphalt Pinder

ABSTRACT In this work, comparative rheological tests on binders and mechanical tests for unmodified and modified asphalt with a nanocomposite (CdS–polymethylmethyacrylate [PMMA]) were carried out, and the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt were studied. Asphalt (60/70) and binders were modified with a CdS–PMMA nanocomposite to improve its performance in various percentages, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1%. An increase in the softening point, decrease in binder penetration as the additive hardened the binder, increase in kinematic viscosity, increase in absolute viscosity, increase in the percentage stress value, as well as decrease in the percentage strain value were found, which appears that the 0.8% has the better character from the nanocomposite.
