Damage Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of DD6 Single‐Crystal Alloy Based on Crystal Plasticity Theory under Uniaxial Tensile Conditions

Herein, the mechanical behavior and damage characteristics of DD6 nickel‐based single crystal alloy under different crystal orientation conditions are studied based on the theory of crystal plasticity coupled with damage constitutive equations using the crystal plasticity finite‐element method. The results indicate that the crystal plastic finite‐element model coupled with damage constitutive equations can well describe the entire deformation process from elasticity to damage. Under the reference orientation condition, the damage starts from the center position inside the test specimen and extends to the surrounding areas. The stress value in the damaged area decreases gradually from the periphery to the center of the test specimen, and an external stress reduction zone is formed. The crystal exhibits the best elasticity properties in the [0, 1, 1] orientation and the best plasticity properties in the [0, tan22.5°, 1] orientation. As the rotation angle of crystal orientation increases, the damage zones of X‐Z, Z‐Y, and X‐Y sections all exhibit clockwise rotation characteristics.

Analytical study on plastic loosening zone of weak surrounding rocks tunnel in high cold areas

AbstractThe analysis of plastic loosening zone of tunnels with cold condition, high in situ stress, and weak stratum is the key scientific problem of tunnel construction in cold areas. Based on the unified strength theory and considering the coupling effect of high in situ stress and low‐temperature field, the analytical model of the plastic loosening zone of tunnel surrounding rocks was proposed, and the influence laws of physical parameters (initial ground stress, freezing temperature, excavation radius, and intermediate principal stress) was explored. The results illustrate that: (1) with the coupling of low temperature and stress fields, the in‐situ stress has a more significant effect on the radius of the plastic loosening zone of the tunnel surrounding rocks, showing a nonlinear correlation. When the in situ stress is small, the influence of the temperature field on the radius of the plastic loosening zone is more obvious. (2) The radius of the plastic loosening zone of the tunnel surrounding rocks increases synchronously with the excavation radius and gradually decreases with the increase of the intermediate principal stress. (3) The greater the temperature difference in the low‐temperature field, the tunnel stability has a more significant response to the intermediate principal stress and is positively correlated with the coefficient of the intermediate principal stress. (4) In the actual project, the proposed model can well describe the mechanical behavior and deformation characteristics of tunnel surrounding rocks in low‐temperature environment, showing applicability. The research results are expected to provide a theoretical basis for the study of tunnel stability in cold areas.

Multi-level stiffness property and isolating-based design of high damping rubber bearings

This study presents the development and analysis of high damping rubber bearings (HDRBs) with enhanced stiffness properties to improve seismic isolation performance. The proposed HDRBs exhibit displacement-dependent nonlinear stiffness and significant damping effects, especially under large deformations caused by various seismic events. A deformation history integral model, calibrated with experimental data, is employed to accurately simulate the mechanical behavior and stiffness-damping characteristics of the HDRBs. The numerical simulations are validated through experimental tests, providing a solid basis for parameter design and performance assessment. The results show that the equivalent stiffness coefficient of the HDRBs increases with deformation amplitude, effectively limiting extreme deformations. Parametric analyses and case studies across a wide range of earthquake scenarios demonstrate that the enhanced stiffness and high damping effects of HDRBs significantly improve seismic isolation efficiency while controlling isolation layer displacement. The performance-based design methodology developed in this research effectively limits bearing deformation, thereby preventing potential superstructure failures. Moreover, the adaptive characteristics of the HDRBs allow for the adjustment of deformation levels according to seismic intensity, ensuring the structural safety of buildings under varying earthquake conditions.

Failure characteristics and pressure relief effectiveness of non-persistent jointed rock mass with holes

In tunnel engineering, the rock mass contains a significant number of irregularly distributed joints, and typically exhibits high energy accumulation, thereby posing a risk of rockburst occurrence. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to investigate the fracture propagation behavior in jointed rock masses and assess the impact of borehole pressure relief on mitigating rockburst occurrences for effective prevention and control measures. This paper focuses on failure characteristics and pressure relief effectiveness of non-persistent jointed rock mass with holes through laboratory testing and numerical simulation. In laboratory experiments, rock samples are prepared to include a range of crack dip angles and circular holes. Then, the crack propagation law of crack inclination and circular hole is studied by AE and DIC technology. The experimental results show that with the increase of fracture dip angle, the peak strength and energy change of the sample decrease first and then increase. Due to the existence of holes, the crack propagation direction of the original crack is changed. After drilling, the strain energy of the sample is obviously reduced, which shows that the drilling pressure relief effect is obvious, which can effectively reduce the energy accumulated inside the rock mass and reduce the risk of rockburst. Finally, the PFC numerical simulation software is used to analyze the micro-failure process and energy change law of the sample from three aspects: the relative position of cracks and holes, the diameter of boreholes and the spacing of boreholes. Further understanding of the energy dissipation law and mechanical behavior characteristics of jointed rock mass provides a reference for exploring the pressure relief effect of rock mass and preventing rockburst.

Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction of 3D Morphology of Geomaterial Particles from Single-View 2D Images.

The morphology of particles formed in different environments contains critical information. Thus, the rapid and effective reconstruction of their three-dimensional (3D) morphology is crucial. This study reconstructs the 3D morphology from two-dimensional (2D) images of particles using artificial intelligence (AI). More than 100,000 particles were sampled from three sources: naturally formed particles (desert sand), manufactured particles (lunar soil simulant), and numerically generated digital particles. A deep learning approach based on a voxel representation of the morphology and multi-dimensional convolutional neural networks was proposed to rapidly upscale and reconstruct particle morphology. The trained model was tested using the three particle types and evaluated using different multi-scale morphological descriptors. The results demonstrated that the statistical properties of the morphological descriptors were consistent for the real 3D particles and those derived from the 2D images and the model. This finding confirms the model's validity and generalizability in upscaling and reconstructing diverse particle samples. This study provides a method for generating 3D numerical representations of geological particles, facilitating in-depth analysis of properties, such as mechanical behavior and transport characteristics, from 2D images.

Dynamic mechanical behavior and failure characteristics of jointed rock-like specimen under impact load

Understanding the mechanical response and failure characteristics of jointed rock masses under multiple dynamic disturbances is crucial for the stability and safety of rock engineering projects. In this study, multi-stage impact loading tests and numerical simulations were conducted on jointed rock-like specimens with sawtooth joints to investigate the effect of joint roughness and joint morphology on dynamic properties and failure characteristics of jointed rock. The results indicate that the dynamic strength, average Young’s modulus, and total impact numbers decreased with the increase of the Joint roughness coefficient (JRC). The triangular tooth-shaped joints with smaller joint heights had higher bearing capacities. The failure modes and damage evolution characteristics of jointed specimens under impacts were also investigated from the energy perspective. The results show that the dynamic failure modes of jointed rock-like specimens mainly include two types: abrasive failure and tensile cracking failure, and tensile cracking failure can be further divided into tensile splitting failure and oblique tensile failure. The total energy and energy density of the specimens with different JRC were investigated. The results show that the total deformation energy and energy density decreased with the increase of JRC under impact loading. The higher the roughness of the specimens, the faster the increase in the damage variable. The asperity height had a significant impact on the damage evolution under impact load. The higher the triangle joint asperity height, the fewer the number of impacts required to reach the same level of damage under the same swing angle. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex failure mechanisms in jointed rock masses, providing valuable insights for designing safer and more resilient rock engineering structures.

Particularities on the Low-Velocity Impact Behavior of 3D-Printed Sandwich Panels with Re-Entrant and Honeycomb Core Topologies

This work describes, through experimental and numerical investigations, the mechanical behavior and energy absorption characteristics of 3D-printed sandwich panels with cellular cores subjected to low-velocity impact. Using fused deposition modeling techniques (FDM), three different sandwich panels, one with a regular hexagonal core and two with re-entrant cores at 0 and 90 degrees, were fabricated. The sandwich panels were subjected to low-velocity impact, at impact energies of 10 J and 15 J. A comprehensive investigation of the panels’ behavior through experimental testing and numerical simulation was conducted. The results indicate that the sandwich panel with a 90 degrees re-entrant core is stiffer and absorbs the largest amount of impact energy but, at the same time, suffers significant damage to the upper facesheet. The 0 degrees re-entrant core is compliant and provides both impact resistance and good energy absorption characteristics. Such a sandwich panel finds its application in the construction of personal protective equipment, where the aim is to minimize the forces transmitted during low-velocity impacts and maximize the total absorbed energy. Re-entrant core sandwich panels prove to be very good candidates for replacing the honeycomb core sandwich, depending on the desired engineering application.

Investigation on the microstructure and compressive behavior of open-cell copper- Al2O3 composite foams

The objective of this study is to evaluate the mechanical behavior and energy absorption characteristics of open-cell copper- Al2O3 composite foams fabricated using polyurethane foam with an average pore size of 1.2 mm and a combination of electroless and electrodeposition methods. During electroplating process, the composite foams were fabricated with varying amounts of Al2O3 particles (0.1, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 g/l) in electrolyte solution. To assess mechanical properties of the fabricated foams, uniaxial compression test was conducted to determine the maximum compressive strength, energy absorption density, efficiency, and specific energy absorption. The content of Al2O3 in the fabricated composite foams was evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and the microstructure was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the incorporation of Al2O3 particles significantly improves the mechanical properties of the copper-Al2O3 composite foam. Specifically, in the composite foam with 9.34 vol% of Al2O3 particles, the maximum compressive strength, total energy absorption, specific energy absorption, and energy absorption efficiency reach 1.03 MPa, 6.48 MJ m−3, 1.9 J g−1, and 75%, respectively. This amount of alumina particles enhances the maximum compressive strength and total energy absorption of open-cell copper foam by approximately 30% and 100%, respectively. However, the mentioned parameters slightly decreased with an increasing amount of Al2O3 particles up to 16.32 vol%. These significant improvements in the mechanical properties of these foams make them well-suited for high-strength applications.

Characteristics of dynamic mechanics and energy loss in reef limestone concrete during dry-wet carbonation periods

Coral reef limestone is a unique type of rock and soil body characterized by high porosity. Its dynamic mechanical properties under impact loads differ significantly from those of conventional land-sourced aggregate concrete.This study utilizes coral reef limestone as both coarse and fine aggregates to prepare C40 strength concrete. The research investigates the effects of dry-wet carbonation cycles on its dynamic mechanical behavior and energy evolution characteristics using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) mechanical testing system.The findings reveal that increasing the number of dry-wet carbonation cycles leads to a significant weakening of the internal structural bonding in coral reef limestone concrete. Notably, the degree of phenolphthalein color change diminishes, while uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength demonstrate an overall downward trend. The reduction in tensile strength is less pronounced than the decrease in compressive strength. Additionally, the relative dynamic elastic modulus gradually decreases, and a size effect is noted, with a rapid acceleration in mass loss. As the number of dry-wet carbonation cycles increases, dynamic compressive strength declines, and failure modes shift from surface cracking to crush-type failure.The dynamic increase factor (DIF) of the coral reef limestone concrete indicates a high sensitivity to strain rate, with a significant rise in DIF value as the strain rate increases. Various energies generated under impact load exhibit clear strain rate effects. Furthermore, the effects of dry-wet carbonation cycling enhance energy dissipation, especially at 30 cycles, where energy dissipation increases sharply, while a hindering effect on transmitted energy is observed.

Three-part superposition quasi-static stress model for PTFE across a broad low-temperature range based on ZWT and higher-order stress corrections

The widespread application of cryogenic liquid fuels in aerospace necessitates an accurate description of the mechanical properties of sealing materials such as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at low temperatures. This study aims to develop a stress prediction model to describe the tensile stress response of PTFE across a broad low-temperature range. Quasi-static tensile tests on PTFE samples were conducted to obtain the uniaxial tensile properties of PTFE in the low-temperature range. Data fitting revealed significant errors and a loss of physical significance in the classical Zhu–Wang–Tang (ZWT) constitutive model and its modified versions when describing PTFE's mechanical response at low temperatures or large strains. Based on these theoretical models, a three-part superposition (TPS) model, incorporating asymptotic growth, linear growth, and exponential growth terms, is proposed. The TPS model demonstrates excellent predictive accuracy for PTFE's mechanical response from 77 K to 293 K, and from initial strain to fracture. Additionally, the physical connections and interpretations between the three parts of the TPS model and the macroscopic mechanical behavior and microscopic crystalline characteristics of semi-crystalline polymers are analyzed, providing a unified description and a comprehensive understanding of PTFE's mechanical behavior over this temperature range.

Stress transfer paths and damage modes of layered coal-rock mass under static loading

In order to explore the distribution characteristics of nonlinear mechanical behavior and the tendency of damage and failure of deep in situ coal-rock mass, a layered composite thin plate coal-rock mass model is established based on thin plate theory and finite element method. The continuity of interlayer stress and displacement is maintained by transfer matrix function, and the maximum shear stress is calculated by Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. The distribution characteristics of stress, displacement, energy and maximum shear stress of coal-rock mass under static load are obtained. The analysis results are as follows : ① The torsional stress concentration areas of τxz and τyz are formed on the boundary of coal-rock interface, and the principal stress concentration areas of σx, σy and σz are formed in the center and center of the boundary, and the shear stress distribution of τxy is formed on the diagonal line. ② The maximum shear stress of the long axis has a strengthening effect on the shear failure, and each layer forms a stress state of alternating tension-shear-compression-shear. It first destroys in the middle of the coal-rock interface and boundary, and then destroys along the long side and short side. ③ The coal-rock mass presents a ′ X ′ -type shear zone along the radial and axial. The shear failure occurs first, followed by the principal stress compression failure. The cracks are preferentially developed in the direction perpendicular to the minimum principal stress, and the stepped ′ V ′ -shaped failure characteristics are formed under the action of shear and tensile stress.

Rate-dependent constitutive behavior and mechanism of CMDB under tension loading

The composite modified double-base propellants (CMDB) were experimentally investigated for mechanical behavior under wide tension strain rate loading from 0.0001 s−1 to 2500 s−1, based on Instron mechanical machine and modified Hopkinson tension bar technique. Stress-strain curves were obtained for its strain rate effect and integrality evaluation. The results indicated that CMDB presents high rate-dependence with flow stress distinctly increase as loading strain rate increasing. A succinct constitutive formulation is established with only five parameters, to characterize well the rate-dependence and strain hardening behavior. The fracture morphologies were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and it is indicated that they are also rate-dependent: the cavitation and matrix damage induced from matrix deformation work less but more RDX particles fractures with strain rate increasing. Equivalent unit cell model with brittle cracking was established to simulate the mechanical behavior and failure characteristics of CMDB. The results reveal that with increasing loading strain rates, CMDB presents a tough-brittle transition, with less cavitation and matrix damage induced by matrix deformation, while more RDX particles fracture. Series of simulated results confirm qualitatively the experimental observations, and the obtained stress contours facilitate to validate the observed characteristics and propose reasonable mechanisms.

Analysis of failure properties of red sandstone with structural plane subjected to true triaxial stress paths

In order to study the mechanical behavior and failure characteristics of rock mass with the structural plane in complex deep stress environment, the QKX-YB200 true triaxial rockburst test system, acoustic emission, and digital video recorder were adopted to conduct true triaxial loading and unloading indoor tests on the red sandstone cube specimens. The results show that: (1) Under true triaxial loading conditions, all specimens propagate in the form of anti-wing crack, and the dip angle of the structural plane is linearly related to the average value of the anti-wing crack propagation angle; under true triaxial unloading conditions, the specimens with structural plane dip angles of 30°, 45°, and 60° propagate in the form of wing crack, while those with a 90° angle propagate anti-wing cracks, and the closure of structural plane is related to the the crack type at the tips of structural plane. (2) The unstable failure stages in the stress–strain curve under true triaxial unloading are longer and exhibit more pronounced fluctuations; the peak strength of the specimens under the conditions of true triaxial loading and unloading decrease first and then increase with the increase of the dip angle, reaching the lowest at 45°. (3) During the true triaxial unloading tests, the rockburst degree of the intact rock specimens is more violent than that of the specimens with a structural plane. Additionally, the dip angle of the structural plane influences the severity of rockbursts under the same stress path. (4) The crack propagation mechanism and the closure degree of structural planes under different true triaxial stress paths and dip angles are discussed. It is observed that the crack initiation mode around the structural plane tips and the crack mode near free surface are closely related to the stress environment in different areas of the specimens. (5) Based on the indoor test results and previous experimental data, the differences in peak strength characteristics between open structural planes and closed structural planes are preliminarily analyzed and compared.

Comparative analysis of classic network vs. nanogel junction network in konjac glucomannan/kappa carrageenan hybrid hydrogels

The three-dimensional network architecture of hydrogels significantly influences their mechanical and physical properties; therefore, understanding them is essential for designing optimized hydrogel-based biomaterials. This study presents a comparative analysis of two hybrid hydrogels composed of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and kappa carrageenan (KCAR) with the same stiffness (5.2–5.7 kPa and 1.6–1.7 kPa) thus similar cross-linking density but different network architectures: a classic network formed by extended polysaccharide interactions and a nanogel junction network where nanoscale cross-linked KCAR (KCAR-NGs) links KGM chains. The mechanical behavior, dissolution, and diffusion characteristics were examined, revealing that the classic network demonstrates superior tensile resistance, elongation, and solvent-induced swelling resistance, leading to slower dissolution rates and higher viscosity. Conversely, the nanogel junction network offers higher permeability for small molecules and faster dissolution, suggesting a more open network structure. These findings highlight the nanogel-based hydrogels' advantages for biomedical applications requiring stability, permeability, and rapid dissolution without high temperatures or chelating agents. This study underscores the potential of nanogel junction networks to balance hydrogel stiffness and permeability, advancing the design of hydrogel-based biomaterials.

Off-axis mechanical behavior and dynamic characteristics of UHMWPE composite laminates

An understanding of the off-axis mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) cross-ply laminates subjected to quasi-static and dynamic loadings is developed, with focus on the influence of off-axis angle and strain rate. For off-axis tension, UHMWPE laminates exhibit polymer shear response characteristics. An orientation-hardening phenomenon is captured, as fiber rotation leads to local increment of load capacity along the loading orientation. The failure strength presents an evidentially descending trend with off-axis angle from 0° to 45°. A non-monotonic variation of strength with strain rate is further observed: increasing with strain rate up to 500 s−1 but decreasing above, which is attributed to failure mode switching from plastic failure to brittle failure. The Tsai-Wu failure criterion, on homogenized cross-ply laminae, is experimentally modified with rate dependence. Further investigation on detailed information of the unidirectional properties should be conducted with the backing-out scheme to establish unidirectional failure criterion.

Influence of Curing Time on the Mechanical Behavior of Cold Recycled Bituminous Mix in Flexible Pavement Base Layer

This study examined the mechanical behavior characteristics of cold recycled emulsified asphalt bases with RAP 76% and emulsified asphalt 3%, in different cure time, i.e., 0, 7, 14 and 28 days and evaluated in terms of the resilient modulus (RM) and permanent deformation (PD) based on repeated load triaxial tests. The results demonstrated that in the first 7 days, the RM increased by 80% compared to the freshly compacted material and after this period, the subsequent increases were not as significant, ranging, from 10.9% to 19.4%, that shows that initical cure time significantly influences the RM behavior of the mixtures. However, the mixtures showed considerable permanent deformations, even after 28 days of curing. This indicates that the use of asphalt emulsion, with prolonged curing, improves the mechanical properties of the mixture but does not entirely resolve the issue of permanent deformation in cold reclaimed asphalt mixture (CRAM). The plastic deformation behavior observed in the triaxial tests must be taken into account when designing pavements containing RAP and asphalt emulsion.

Characterization of mechanical behavior and cementing mechanism of high-strength composites using biomimetic chemically induced calcium carbonate precipitation method

Biomimetic mineralized mortar (BMM) represents a novel green cementitious material, increasingly recognized for its environmental sustainability. In this study, four typical amino acids including acidic amino acids (aspartic acid, glutamic acid), neutral amino acid (threonine), and basic amino acid (arginine), are employed as crystal modifiers to develop the high-strength BMM (HBMM) based on the biomimetic chemically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (BCICP) method. The mechanical properties and failure morphology of HBMM were evaluated through unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. The microstructure characteristics of HBMM were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle test. The results show that amino acid-modified calcium carbonate precipitation can effectively cement loose sand particles and significantly improve the strength of the HBMM. The failure modes of HBMM observed include local failure, vertical splitting failure, shear failure, and splitting-shear mixed failure. Notably, aspartic acid and glutamic acid can induce the formation of vaterite-phase calcium carbonate crystals, while threonine and arginine facilitate the formation of aragonite-phase calcium carbonate crystals. The hydrogen bonding between modified calcium carbonate crystals and silanol groups on the silica surface ensures a tight adhesion of the precipitate to sand surfaces, filling gaps and cementing particles. This study elucidates that using amino acids as modifiers in the BCICP method can significantly enhance the strength of HBMM and influence its microstructure, offering valuable insights for its potential practical applications.

Experimental study on effect of cyclic gas pressure on mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of salt rock

The utilization of renewable resources like wind and solar energy has led the Chinese government to prioritize the development of energy storage systems, garnering significant attention for salt cavern compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology. The stability of the surrounding rock in salt caverns is critical for ensuring sustained operation. By conducting mechanical tests on salt rock under fixed axial and confining pressures with cyclic gas pressure, the mechanical behavior and acoustic emission characteristics of salt rock under the influence of gas pressure were analyzed. The mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of salt rock were analyzed. The results indicated that the triaxial compressive strength of salt rock negatively correlated with constant gas pressure. Both radial and axial strains demonstrated distinct phases: deceleration, steady-state, and acceleration. The steady-state creep rate of axial strain and the lower limit of cyclic gas pressure can be fitted in the form of an exponential function. The number of cyclic air pressure cycles decreased as the lower limit of cyclic air pressure increased. Acoustic emission count was used to define the damage variables, clarifying the formation and accumulation of salt rock damage in each stage, distinguishing the growth rates of damage during loading and unloading. It was observed that the higher the lower limit of cyclic air pressure, the quicker the damage accumulated with cycling. During the test, the absolute energy of the acoustic emissions from the salt rock conformed to a damped power-law distribution. The power-law distribution index γ of the absolute energy of acoustic emissions shifted with the number of cyclic air pressure cycles, and the sudden decrease of the distribution index γ plays a certain early warning role for the failure of salt rock.

Experimental Characterization of Anisotropic Mechanical Behaviour and Failure Mechanisms of Hardened Printed Concrete.

Extrusion-based printing of cementitious materials represents an innovative technology in civil engineering. The additive manufacturing process significantly influences the material properties in the hardened state, leading to anisotropic behaviour in terms of stiffness and strength compared to conventionally cast concrete. This experimental study aims to deepen the understanding of the mechanical behaviour of hardened printed concrete. Beam-like specimens with varying printing patterns, loading orientations and lengths are investigated within three-point bending tests (3PBT) and uniaxial compression tests (UCT). Homogenized material parameters such as Young's modulus, compressive and flexural tensile strength and density are statistically evaluated using optically measured displacement and strain fields on the specimen surface. The qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate a strong dependency of material properties and failure mechanisms on the printing pattern. The interfilamental and interlayer areas with weak adhesion are identified as the main reason for anisotropy.
