“You’ve Got to Connect with the People”: The Meaning of, Preferences for, and Involvement in Social Participation for Older People Living in Nursing Homes in Victoria, Australia

This research sought to explore the meaning of, preferences for, and involvement in social participation for older people living in nursing homes in Victoria, Australia. A qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews with twenty older people living in four geographically and ethnically diverse nursing homes was conducted between 2020 and 2022. Interview transcripts were thematically analysed. All the older people had been very socially active before moving into aged care and had participated in leisure and volunteering activities. Five themes emerged from the data analysis related to the meaning of, preferences for, and involvement in activities for social participation. The meaning of social participation among these older people varied. Some participated in group activities to keep active and busy, while others were content with interests of their own. Social participation in group activities provided older people with a connection to others and assisted in maintaining existing, or developing new, relationships. However, the ability to participate in group activities that offered opportunities for social participation was limited by age-related decline for some older people. The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions constrained activities, which provided opportunities for social participation for some older people living in nursing homes, but not all. These perspectives highlight the need for individualised person-centred opportunities for social participation in nursing homes. Group activities should enable older people to remain active and facilitate social connections that provide meaning and purpose. Respect for individual choice is important, as older people are not a homogeneous group, and opportunities to pursue individual activities should be facilitated.

Objectives The main purpose of this study is to explore the reality of parenting. To achieve the research purpose, three research questions were set. First, what is the meaning of parenting?, Second, what are the difficulties of parenting?, Third, what are the rewards of parenting?
 Methods Researchers applied the photovoice research method, a type of participatory action research, to explore the reality of parenting. Fourteen mothers who are experiencing childcare participated in the study, and the study participants participated in photovoice activities three times. The first meeting between researchers and partic-ipants took place during orientation. Using this time, the researchers explained the concept, characteristics, pro-cedures, and effects of photovoice to the participants. Additionally, the researchers informed the participants that they would take pictures, give meanings, and conduct discussion activities according to the topic. Researchers collected data through three sessions of photovoice activities and photo-based focus group discussions with participants. Data analysis was conducted through the processes of selecting, contextualizing, and codifying, and results were derived according to three research questions.
 Results As a result of the study, the meaning of parenting appeared to be growth and hope through reflection, and the difficulties of parenting appeared to be continuous self-sacrifice in difficult situations. And the reward of pa-renting appeared as the reason for existence and the power of social movement. This study is significant in that it conveyed their vivid voices by conducting photovoice research targeting mothers experiencing parenting.
 Conclusions Based on the research results, the researchers discussed the following three points. First, we were able to vividly see the reality of mothers experiencing childcare. Second, by applying the photovoice research method, we showed the reality of mothers experiencing childcare in a three-dimensional way. Third, this study, which applied the photovoice research method, served as a useful channel through which the voices of mothers experiencing childcare could be conveyed to society. Fourth, it was confirmed that photovoice can be a useful means of social participation.

Differences in the healthcare needs of older adults attending primary health centers in urban and rural areas of Taiwan

PurposeAs the older adult population in Taiwan continues to increase, primary health centers (PHCs) play a crucial role in geriatric care. This study explored the differences in the PHC experiences and usage needs of older adults in urban versus rural areas.MethodsA qualitative study was conducted. Twenty-one older adults were recruited from PHCs in northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan. Semistructured interviews were used to collect data, and the interview guidelines included their reasons for visiting PHCs, the health-care services they received, their evaluation of the services, and the advantages and disadvantages of these centers. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis.ResultsThe PHC usage needs of older adults in urban areas differ from those of older adults in rural areas in the following 3 aspects: (1) Medical services: older adults in rural areas demand clinics specializing in various medical domains, mobile and home medical care, and case management, whereas those in urban areas demand mobile health examinations. (2) Environment and transportation: older adults in rural areas demand diverse medical equipment, shuttle services, and accessible facilities, whereas those in urban areas demand recreational facilities. (3) Active aging: older adults in rural areas demand health education courses, and those in urban areas demand diverse senior citizen courses as well as opportunities to volunteer and build interpersonal relationships.ConclusionThe older adults in urban and rural areas had different PHC usage needs. The older adults in rural areas generally focused on medical care and transportation services in PHCs, whereas those in urban areas generally focused on health promotion as a means of social participation and active aging.

Insulados e não democráticos: a (im)possibilidade do exercício da social accountability nos Tribunais de Contas brasileiros

Resumo Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar a permeabilidade dos Tribunais de Contas (TCs) brasileiros à sociedade, por meio de 3 perspectivas: a) transparência dos portais; b) transparência da atividade de fiscalização; e c) participação cidadã. Para tanto, foi estruturado um roteiro de observações, a partir de recomendações de organismos internacionais, e foram coletadas informações dos 32 TCss existentes no Brasil. Em seguida, foram elaborados mapas perceptuais para cada uma das perspectivas analisadas, por meio da técnica de escalonamento multidimensional. As evidências sugerem que os TCs não são transparentes, o que limita a social accountability, e são muito resistentes à participação social, limitando-se a disponibilizar os mecanismos de ouvidoria, portal da transparência e serviço de atendimento ao cidadão. Essas práticas evidenciam que os TCs são, ainda, muito insulados, burocratizados e, apesar de terem um relevante papel no contexto republicano, pouco democráticos. Identificou-se, entretanto, forte influência da Lei de Responsabilidade Fiscal (LRF) e da Lei de Acesso à Informação (LAI) sobre os TCs. Isso pode significar futuras mudanças, ainda que incrementais, na direção da atuação dos TCs como fortes aliados para o aprimoramento da accountability vertical.

Family Social Participation in Young Children With Autism: Phenomenological Analyses

Abstract Date Presented 04/05/19 This phenomenological study explored and illuminated the experiences and meaning of social participation in families raising a young child with autism. Ten families were recruited and interviewed. Phenomenological analyses revealed that family experiences and meaning related to social participation included 1) divide and conquer, 2) occupation in isolation, and 3) pausing to reset engagement. The Meaning of Social Participation for Daily Mobility in Later Life: an Ethnographic Case Study of a Senior Project in a Swedish Urban Neighbourhood

This paper presents an ethnographic case study that aims to understand the meaning of social participation in a neighbourhood for daily mobility in later life. In the study, the mobility of the participants of a senior-citizen project was monitored over 18 months. The project was founded as a result of a municipal district’s targeting of social sustainability. The results show that social participation had positive effects on the daily mobility of the participants. The implementation of broad-minded thinking from the municipality and the cooperation of various municipal actors were shown to be essential for the positive outcome of this project.

Decent Living Standards: Material Prerequisites for Human Wellbeing

We define a set of universal, irreducible and essential set of material conditions for achieving basic human wellbeing, along with indicators and quantitative thresholds, which can be operationalized for societies based on local customs and preferences. We draw support for this decent living standard (DLS) from different accounts of basic justice, including the capability approach and basic needs. The DLS goes beyond existing multidimensional poverty indicators by comprehensively addressing living conditions and the means of social participation. The DLS offers a normative basis to develop minimum wage and reference budgets, and to assess the environmental impacts, such as climate change, of eradicating poverty.

Impact of Social Media on Tribal

The media today has well and truly spread its wings. The use of social media has drawn significant role in recent years. An increasing number of practitioners have started using social media in their teaching. From being limited to the whims of a few individuals, it has come a long way to become a means of social participation. While the fourth estate has been in order for a long while, it seems to have realized its true potential and purpose in the new millennium only in the true spirit of democracy as envisaged by Abraham Lincoln's of being an institution ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’. This has been facilitated by the advent of the social media. Social media, with its immediate and amplified reach, has transformed the way people interact with each other. This is significant because information and social awareness have emerged as important factors of human empowerment. The focus of this paper is to delineate the relationship between social media and Tribal India.

Attitudes towards the Use of ICT Training Curriculum for Thai Elderly People

Learning and using information and communication technologies (ICT) such as computer technologies and internet by the elderly is seen as an important demand for their integration in daily life and as a factor related to active aging. The aim of this research is to explore the attitudes of the elderly towards ICT literacy in the context of a training curriculum about the utilization of a personal computer platform such as introduction to computer, using Windows, internet: web browser usage, e-mail management, searching information, and Facebook. It is the result of an empirical study with a sample of 32 older people (65 years and older), consisted of retried employee from the schools and universities that took place in the centers for the elderly in the province of Chiang Mai in Thailand. They registered in the special short course training for the elderly at information technology center, Maejo University, Thailand. The data were collected through questionnaire. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage and mean. They have more skill in ICT after learning course. The research findings indicate that the elderly who use ICT learning show more positive attitudes towards new technologies. They thought of training as a means of social participation and lifelong learning.

Attitudes of the Elderly Toward Information and Communications Technologies

Learning and using new technologies by the older people is seen as a demand for their integration in society and as a factor related to active aging. The goal of this article is to understand the attitudes of the elderly towards information and communication technologies in the context of a training course about the utilization of a digital platform. It is the result of an empirical study with a sample of 240 older people registered in the course Tele-Services for the Elderly, that took place in the Centers for the Elderly in the province of Cuenca, Spain. Through a self-administered questionnaire, aspects related to social activity, knowledge and use of the computer and Internet, expectations on learning and use of computer technology, personal competence, and self-concept were evaluated. The results obtained showed relationships between implication in the activities, experience with computers, and belief in the usefulness of learning new technologies. The participants' involvement in the activities was related to greater contact with information and communication technologies (ICT), which, in turn, generated more positive attitudes toward its learning and utility as well as more self-confidence. The elderly said that they enrolled in different activities to learn and to keep their minds active, and they thought of training as a means of social participation and lifelong learning.

The participation of the society, central axis of Brazilian’s Sanitary Reform, is present in the conception of health as citizen's right and State’s obligation, in the definition of the principles of universality, integrality and justness about health’s politics and in the institutionalization of Health’s Unique System decentralized and with social control. However the meaning of social participation, guards a historicity with the context in which emerges acquiring new senses as they are putted in public debate about enlargement processes, democracy’s qualification and invigoration, essential presupposition to the participation.

Work, Identity, and Stigma Management in an Italian Mental Health Community

When mental illness prevents an individual from working, the economic burden is obvious, but little attention has been paid to the accompanying loss of social identity. This paper addresses the meanings of work and unemployment for participants in an Italian community mental health center, and it evaluates the role of work therapy in an agricultural setting as a way to regain some social aspects of work or professional identity. The study is based on over a year of anthropological fieldwork in the Province of Bergamo, Northern Italy, conducted to investigate the relationship between community-based mental health care, social stigma of mental illness, and the social sphere in everyday life. The social position of the individual at the time of job loss is significant in his or her professional expectations while in the community center. Those who had previously worked in manual or farming capacities found this type of work therapy to be a helpful means of social participation. On the other hand, expectations based on educational, social, and economic hierarchies persist for individuals within mental health communities. For those individuals with high education, manual labor violated professional expectations, and the reality of their employability provided a conflict between social participation and perceived status group. The stigma of unemployment is also addressed in relation to political identity and desire for worker status.
