Mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) and lexical diversity among Urdu speaking children between 3 to 3.11 years of age

Background: Language is an excellent and convenient means of communication. Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) measures linguistic productivity in children. Objectives: to find the mean length of utterance in words and lexical diversity among children aged 3-3.11 years typically developing Urdu-speaking. Methods: The data of n=100 children of both genders of age between (3 to 3.11 years) who performed on blank levels 1 and 2 was collected through a cross-sectional survey. The data was collected from daycare centers and schools in Rawalpindi and Islamabad from November 2022 to June 2023. MLU calculation procedure was carried out through activities from ICW and Blank Level. For the calculation of MLU, the formula was used. Results: The Mean Length of Utterance at word level (MLUw)of children aged between 3 to 3.11 years was 3.43. In lexical diversity (LD) children have used Nouns (NN) most abundantly as 55% of Verbs (VB) with 35% Tense Auxiliaries (TA)30%. Conclusion: It is found that children's MLUw of 3.43 between the ages of 3 and 4 indicates an increase in speech complexity. Nouns, verbs, and tense auxiliaries have been recognized as the main elements via lexical analysis.

Establishing guidelines for MLU measurement in an agglutinating language: An illustration of Georgian

This article explores the applicability of mean length of utterance (MLU) as a language assessment measure for Georgian child language, as to-date, Georgian, a morphologically rich language with numerous inflectional categories, experiences an extensive lack of instruments for early language assessment. To this end, a set of guidelines for calculating Georgian MLU was developed based on the analysis of a longitudinal corpus of two Georgian-speaking children aged 12–35 months. This was supported by the findings of previous studies on Georgian acquisition. Furthermore, the guidelines were used to compare MLU in morphemes (MLU-m) with MLU in words (MLU-w) and MLU in syllables (MLU-s) to determine the most suitable method for assessing morphological development in Georgian. These results indicate that MLU-m closely aligns with the description of language development in Georgian children. MLU-s is useful for demonstrating early linguistic development, while MLU-w correlates with age but does not capture changes within words over time. Further testing on a larger corpus is needed to refine the guidelines for more accurate assessment of Georgian-speaking children.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Grammaticality and Utterance Length in Bilingual Children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of two measures derived from spontaneous language samples, mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) and percentage of grammatical utterances (PGU), in identifying developmental language disorder (DLD) in Spanish-English bilingual children. We examined two approaches: best language and total language. The participants in this study included 74 Spanish-English bilingual children with (n = 36) and without (n = 38) DLD. Language samples were elicited through a story retell and story generation task using Frog wordless picture books in English and Spanish. Stories were transcribed and coded using the Systematic Analysis of Language Samples (Miller & Iglesias, 2020) to extract MLUw and PGU in both languages. Logistic regression analyses suggested that a model that included PGU, MLUw, and age achieved the best diagnostic accuracy in predicting group membership. Both approaches, best language and total language, had fair diagnostic accuracy. In combination, PGU and MLUw seem to be useful diagnostic tools to differentiate bilingual children with and without DLD. Clinical implications and usability are discussed.

Impact of Discourse Type and Elicitation Task on Language Sampling Outcomes.

Language sampling is a critical component of language assessments. However, there are many ways to elicit language samples that likely impact the results. The purpose of this study was to examine how different discourse types and elicitation tasks affect various language sampling outcomes. A diverse group of K-3 students (N = 1,037) contributed eight spoken language samples in four elicitation conditions: (a) expository generation, (b) expository retell, (c) narrative generation, and (d) narrative retell. Samples were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded for number of total words, number of different words, mean length of utterance in words (MLUW), and number of clauses per communication unit (i.e., Subordination Index [SI]). Narrative retell and expository generation conditions yielded the largest samples with the greatest lexical diversity when compared to narrative generation and expository retell. MLUW was higher in expository conditions, but mean SI was higher in narrative conditions. For both measures of syntax, narrative retell and expository generation yielded the highest mean scores. For each outcome, there were expected increases corresponding to grades; however, the differences faded between second and third grade. As a component of language assessments, clinicians' selection of language sampling procedures will impact the sample length, lexical diversity, utterance length, and syntactical complexity of the samples. https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24185649.

Accuracy of Undergraduate Students' Language Sample Analysis in Online and Face-to-Face Courses

Purpose: Language sample analysis (LSA) is an essential part of evaluations for young children, but few studies have investigated whether instructional methods for teaching LSA are effective based on student outcomes. Furthermore, with the growth of online coursework, there is a need to understand whether student outcomes differ depending on instructional modality. This study examined the results of an LSA project from two classes, online and face to face. Research questions addressed whether the measures calculated by the students differed significantly from the values derived by the instructor and whether the results of each language sample measure differed between the two classes. Method: There were 39 total participants: eight online students and 31 face-to-face students. Students transcribed an audio sample of a mother conversing with her 3-year-old son. Students calculated the number of complete and intelligible utterances, mean length of utterance in words (MLU-w), MLU in morphemes (MLU-m), number of total words (NTW), number of different words (NDW), and type–token ratio (TTR). Results: When compared to the instructor's values, students' results were significantly different for measures that involved totals (complete and intelligible utterances, NTW, NDW). However, the students used these values to calculate MLU-w, MLU-m, and TTR numbers that were not significantly different from those of the instructor. Results also indicated that there were no differences between the class calculations for most measures. Conclusion: Results are discussed considering how they inform the evidence-based teaching practices of instructors who are teaching undergraduate courses in communication sciences and disorders.

Tele-Assessment of Oral Personal Narratives in Arabic- and Hebrew-Speaking Children Using the Global TALES Protocol

Introduction: Tele-assessment (TA) has the potential to enhance access to speech therapy. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the impact of assessment mode (face-to-face [FTF] vs. TA) on the microstructure level and chosen topics of personal narratives produced by Arabic-speaking and Hebrew-speaking school-age children living in Israel. We also investigated whether performance variations, if evident, could be attributed to the children’s language/culture. Methods: Eighty-nine 10-year-old children, 38 Arabic-speaking and 51 Hebrew-speaking, living in Israel, participated in this study. Forty participants were assigned to a TA group (via Zoom) and 49 to a FTF group. All participants were assessed using the Global TALES protocol, generating six personal narratives each. The narratives were analyzed regarding the following microstructural measures: total number of words, total number of utterances (TNU), number of different words, and mean length of utterance in words (MLU-W). Additionally, each narrative was categorized into a topic according to the Global TALES protocol. Results: The analysis revealed no significant main effect of assessment mode on any of the microstructure measures. However, a significant interaction effect between language/culture and assessment mode was found for TNU and MLU-W, with a significant main effect for TNU exclusively in the Arabic narratives, with the Arabic-speaking children producing more utterances through FTF compared to TA. Across language/culture groups, there was a significant effect of assessment mode on the chosen topic. Additionally, there were significantly higher scores in the Hebrew compared to the Arabic narratives in all microstructure measures, and language/culture also influenced the chosen topics. Conclusions: The results support the feasibility of TA mode for assessing personal narratives in school-aged children, using the Global TALES protocol. However, the results also suggest that TA results may be affected by the language/culture of the narrator. Finally, the findings highlight the potential influence of TA on the chosen topics of personal narratives, perhaps due to a decrease in the quality of communication in TA.

The relationship between mean length of utterance (MLU), Persian developmental sentence score (PDSS), and photographic expressive Persian grammar test (PEGT) in typically developing children and those with developmental language disorder (DLD)

Purpose This study investigated the relationship between three practical measures for evaluating Persian grammar expression skills, MLU, PDSS, and PEGT, in preschool children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their typically developing (TD) peers. Method Secondary data were obtained by re-analyzing language samples collected in previous studies. Previously audiotaped language samples of 25 monolingual 5–7 years-old Persian children with DLD and 25 TD children were transcribed and reanalyzed to calculate MLU in words (MLU-w) and PDSS for comparison with the results of PEGT. Results Children with DLD had lower scores in PEGT, PDSS, and MLU-w than TD children (p < 0.001). In addition, there was a strong correlation between PDSS and MLU-w in both DLD (r = 0.91) and TD groups (r = 0.79). There was a significant correlation between PEGT and MLU (r = 0.76) and PDSS (r = 0.78) in the DLD group, while these correlations were not significant in TD group. Conclusions Considering the positive and significant correlation between MLU, PDSS, and PEGT in children with DLD, the use of PEGT, as a valid, reliable, and accurate test of grammar, which can be implemented quickly and easily, is suggested for clinical purposes of identification and screening of Persian children with DLD.

Plural Suffixation Skills in Developmental Language Disorders: A Preliminary Investigation From Bilectal Cypriot-Greek-Speaking Children With DLD

Young children are known to make significant progress in learning their native language during the first 4 years of their life. Nonetheless, delays or differences in patterns of language acquisition can be cautiously determined and be sensitive indicators of developmental issues. The current paper displays an investigation that examines plural suffixation skills in preschool bilectal Cypriot-Greek (CG)-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD) as compared with their age-matched typically developing peers. Predictions have been made based on the Interpretability Hypothesis (IH) theoretical context postulating that grammatical features (inflections for Tense and Case Features) will be differentially affected in DLD depending on the phonological saliency inherent to specific inflection typology. Developmental language disorder diagnosis was based on exclusionary criteria and on clinical markers based on the language samples analyzed for grammatical errors, including the omission of articles in obligatory contexts, clitic misplacement, incorrect suffixation of plural targets, agreement errors, omission of negation, and reduced Mean Length of Utterance in Words (MLUw). A non-real-word experimental paradigm was used to test subject performance of plural suffixation. Findings revealed that plural suffixation difficulty was not an all-or-none phenomenon. Both erroneous and correct responses were identified during both experimental tasks. In addition, errors were observed in both groups of preschool children; nonetheless, the proportion of errors was recorded to be higher in the DLD group.

Measures of Naturalistic Language for Dialect-Speaking Children: The Case of Cypriot Greek

The aim of this study was to longitudinally examine mean length of utterance in words (MLU-w) and number of different words (NDW) and their association in children speaking Cypriot Greek (CG), a dialect for which such measures of language development have not been adequately investigated. Language samples from 36 typically developing monolingual CG-speaking children were collected at 4-month intervals from the age of 3;0 until 4;0 through free-play based conversation between the children and their caregivers. A zero-order correlation analysis among MLU-w, NDW, and age showed strong positive correlations between any two of these measures. A first-order analysis controlling for age showed that the correlation between MLU-w and NDW was independent from the influence of age. The study provides valuable information on the correlation between MLU-w and NDW for CG-speaking children and it contributes to our knowledge about language development in a dialectal variety lacking standardised tests.

The Using Predicates and the Relations to Sentence Production of Aged 2-3

Objectives: The ability of children to use predicates in spontaneous language is important for expressing their intentions and producing sentences as well. This study aimed to examine the use of predicates in children aged 2;6-3;11 and the relationship between the use of predicates and syntax development.Methods: Sixty children aged 2;6-3;11 participated in this study. The participants were classified into three groups of 6-month intervals: late 2-years, early 3-years, and late 3-years. Spontaneous language samples were collected during an interaction between the researcher and the children using books and pictures during conversations. The number of total predicates (NTP), the number of different predicates (NDP), NTP and NDP by subcategory for measuring use of predicates, and the Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) for measuring the sentence production were measured from the 50 utterances.Results: The NTP of the early and the late 3-years groups was significantly higher than the late 2-years group and the NDP increased significantly from the late 2-years group to the late 3-years group. Among the subcategories of the predicates, significant differences were found in the number of total verbs (NTV), the number of different verbs (NDV), the number of total adjectives (NTA), the number of different adjectives (NDA), the number of total auxiliary verbs (NTAV) and the number of different auxiliary verbs (NDAV). Regression analysis showed that the NTV (53.8%) and the NDA (14.4%) explained the MLU in words; and the NTV (62.9%), NTA (15.1%) and NDV (2.0%) explained the MLU in morphemes.Conclusion: This study confirmed the developmental aspects of the use of predicates in the spontaneous language of children aged 2;6-3;11 and how the use of predicates affects the ability to produce sentences. We discussed the clinical implications of the results and suggest the need for follow-up studies.

Effects of Lamotrigine on Problem-Solving Abilities in Newly Diagnosed Pediatric Patients with Epilepsy.

Background and PurposeThis study aimed to determine the effects of lamotrigine (LTG) on language unction, including problem-solving abilities, in newly diagnosed pediatric epileptic patients.MethodsThis study included 112 newly diagnosed epileptic patients treated with LTG [69 males and 43 females aged 9.6±2.7 years (mean±SD)]. Repeated neurologic examinations, electroencephalography, neuroimaging studies, and standard language tests including the Test of Problem Solving (TOPS), mean length of utterance in words (MLU-w), Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT), and Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonology were performed before and after initiating LTG treatment. The starting LTG dosage was 1 mg/kg/day (maximum: 25 mg/day) for the first 14 days, which was increased to 2 mg/kg/day for the subsequent 14 days and then up to 7 mg/kg/day (or 200 mg/day) for maintenance.ResultsProblem-solving skills as assessed by TOPS scores significantly improved after initiating LTG treatment (33.5±14.5 vs. 35.7±14.25, p<0.01). Scores in the “determining causes” category (11.9±4.7 vs. 12.9±4.8, p<0.01), “making inferences” category (12.9±6.2 vs. 13.6±6.0, p<0.05), and “predicting” category (8.9±5.4 vs. 9.7±5.6, p<0.01) significantly improved after LTG treatment. The MLU-w score did not decrease after LTG treatment (4.7±1.9 vs. 5.0±2.1). There was a significant improvement in receptive language function as assessed using the REVT score (9.4±3.4 years vs. 9.9±3.3 years, p<0.01). Precise articulation also improved after initiating LTG treatment (97.8% vs. 98.5%).ConclusionsLanguage function including problem-solving skills improved after LTG treatment, suggesting that LTG can be administered without causing significant negative effects on language function in pediatric patients.

Communicative Informativeness in Aphasia: Investigating the Relationship Between Linguistic and Perceptual Measures.

Purpose Informativeness refers to how successfully a person is able to convey their intended message. This study explores the relationship between perceptual ratings of informativeness and selected linguistic measures of lexical and structural content. It considers which linguistic measures have ecological validity in terms of what listeners view as important. Method Two complex picture description samples from 20 people with aphasia were analyzed. Linguistic measures included number of correct information units (NCIU), percentage of correct information units, number of propositions (NP), propositional idea density (PID), and mean length of utterance in words (MLU-w). Eleven naïve listeners produced direct magnitude estimation (DME) ratings of informativeness. A correlational design was used to investigate the relationship between mean DME informativeness ratings and each of the linguistic measures. Results The 2 picture description samples elicited similar informativeness ratings. Positive significant correlations were identified between mean DME informativeness ratings and NCIU, percentage of correct information units, NP, and MLU-w; the strength of correlation differed across variables. No significant correlation was found between mean DME informativeness ratings and PID. Significant correlations were also seen between the linguistic variables, particularly between NP and PID as well as NP and MLU-w. Conclusions Overall, the linguistic measures corresponded to rated informativeness, highlighting their ecological validity. The strongest relationship was between NCIU and rated informativeness, emphasizing the importance of complete and accurate production of lexical information, particularly nouns. Less strong, but still significant, relationships were seen with variables looking at the efficiency of information giving and the connection of ideas within sentences. The importance of different types of informative measures is considered in relation to the elicitation stimuli.

Bilingual Speech Sound Development During the Preschool Years: The Role of Language Proficiency and Cross-Linguistic Relatedness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate typical Spanish-English speech sound development longitudinally in a group of bilingual preschoolers enrolled in a Head Start Program and to examine the extent to which such development is linked to language proficiency. The study also aimed to identify whether speech development is related cross-linguistically and to improve our understanding of error patterns in this population. Thirty-five bilingual preschool children produced single-word speech samples in Spanish and English both at the beginning of their first and their second year in a Head Start Program. Conversational samples in both languages were also collected at these data points to calculate mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) and thus assess the children's linguistic proficiency. The phonetically transcribed speech samples were compared over time in terms of segmental accuracy measures and error pattern frequencies. Correlation analyses were run to examine the relation between segmental accuracy measures across languages and between speech sound production and MLUw. One-way within-subject analysis of variance revealed significant improvements in accuracy over time in both languages, but not always for cross-linguistically unshared segments, nor for all consonant manner classes. Overall error rates decreased over time in both languages; although, certain error types showed no change. Cross-linguistic interactions were low in both languages. The results also revealed significant cross-linguistic correlations in segmental accuracy between Spanish and English, as well as between MLUw and speech sound production in both languages on a range of measures, with language-specific differences in Year 2 of the Head Start Program, but not in Year 1. This study is the first to document developmental changes in the speech patterns of Spanish-English bilingual preschool children over 1 year. Accuracy rates improved significantly in both languages, suggesting that enhanced exposure to the majority language at school may not impede phonological development in the home language. Bootstrapping effects were particularly pronounced on cross-linguistically shared sounds, which suggests that the same underlying skills are utilized in both languages, whereas language-specific singleton consonants and consonant clusters did not appear to benefit from exposure to the other language. The results also suggest an intricate link between phonological skills and morphosyntactic performance at the early stages of development, but a more complex pattern thereafter with differences that may be based on language-specific phonological properties.

Production of Spanish Grammatical Forms in U.S. Bilingual Children.

The purpose of this analysis was to understand how grammatical morpheme production in Spanish for typically developing Spanish-English bilingual children relates to mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) and the extent to which different bilingual profiles influence order of grammatical morpheme acquisition. Participants included 228 Spanish-English bilingual children ages 4;0-7;6 (years;months). Grammatical morpheme accuracy was evaluated using an experimental version of the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment (Peña, Gutiérrez-Clellen, Iglesias, Goldstein, & Bedore, 2014). MLUw data were calculated from children's narrative samples. Production accuracy of plural nouns, singular and plural definite articles, preterite tense, imperfect aspect, direct object clitics, prepositions, subjunctive, and conjunctions was calculated and analyzed as a function of MLUw in Spanish. Level of accuracy on these forms was compared for Spanish-dominant and English-dominant groups. Accuracy was significantly associated with MLUw. The relative difficulty of Spanish grammatical morphemes is highly similar across different bilingual profiles. There are common elements of Spanish that are easy (imperfect, plural nouns, singular articles, conjunctions), medium (plural articles, preterite), or hard (prepositions, direct object clitics, subjunctive), regardless of whether a child is a Spanish-dominant or English-dominant bilingual.

Null Subject Occurrence in Monolingual Spanish SLI: A Discriminant Function Analysis

Background: Child Spanish-speakers appear to use more null subjects than do adults. Null subject use, like the use of tense marking, is sensitive to discourse-pragmatics. Because tense marking has been used to identify child Spanish-speakers with specific language impairment (SLI) with near good sensitivity and specificity (89%), null subject use may as well, following the predictions of the Interface Deficit Hypothesis. We investigate the possibility that null subject occurrence may form part of a useful discriminant function for the identification of monolingual child Spanish-speakers diagnosed with specific language impairment. Methods: We evaluate the rate of null subject expression from spontaneous production data, together with results from independent measures of another discourse-sensitive construction, verb finiteness, in child Spanish. We perform a discriminant function analysis, using null subject expression as a target variable, among others, to classify monolingual child Spanish-speakers (N = 40) as SLI or as typically-developing (TD). Results: The SLI group is shown to have significantly higher scores than the TD group on null subject expression. Multiple discriminant functions, including the null subject variable with tense measures, and in combination with mean length of utterance in words (MLUw), are shown to provide good sensitivity and specificity (&lt;90%) in the classification of children as SLI vs. TD. Conclusion: Our findings support the contention that null subject occurrence is a plausible reflection of the Interface Deficit of SLI for Spanish-speaking children.

Spontaneous language of preterm children aged 4 and 5 years

ABSTRACT Purposes: to evaluate spontaneous language development through the Mean Length of Utterance in words (MLU-w) of children with gestational age between 28 and 36 weeks. This research also aims to study if the gestational age, birth weight, gender, and parents’ level of formal education can influence that measurement. Methods: nineteen premature children (9 males, 10 females), in the age range 4-5 years old, enrolled on Lisbon area kindergartens, and considered as having typical development, participated in this research. Spontaneous speech of each child was recorded for 30 minutes and transcribed afterwards. Results: mean values of MLU-w of Portuguese premature children were significantly lower than those with typical development. A positive and significant correlation between the gestational age and the birth weight with the MLU-w was also found. The gender of the children and the parents’ level of formal education showed no influence on the results. Conclusion: these results reinforce the need to identify, on these children, possible deficits, in order to prevent negative impacts in school education, and stimulate their psychosocial development.

Influence of valproate on language functions in children with epilepsy

The aim of the current study was to assess the influences of valproate (VPA) on the language functions in newly diagnosed pediatric patients with epilepsy. We reviewed medical records of 53 newly diagnosed patients with epilepsy, who were being treated with VPA monotherapy (n=53; 22 male patients and 31 female patients). The subjects underwent standardized language tests, at least twice, before and after the initiation of VPA. The standardized language tests used were The Test of Language Problem Solving Abilities, a Korean version of The Expressive/Receptive Language Function Test, and the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonology. Since all the patients analyzed spoke Korean as their first language, we used Korean language tests to reduce the bias within the data. All the language parameters of the Test of Language Problem Solving Abilities slightly improved after the initiation of VPA in the 53 pediatric patients with epilepsy (mean age: 11.6±3.2years), but only “prediction” was statistically significant (determining cause, 14.9±5.1 to 15.5±4.3; making inference, 16.1±5.8 to 16.9±5.6; prediction, 11.1±4.9 to 11.9±4.2; total score of TOPS, 42.0±14.4 to 44.2±12.5). The patients treated with VPA also exhibited a small extension in mean length of utterance in words (MLU-w) when responding, but this was not statistically significant (determining cause, 5.4±2.0 to 5.7±1.6; making inference, 5.8±2.2 to 6.0±1.8; prediction, 5.9±2.5 to 5.9±2.1; total, 5.7±2.1 to 5.9±1.7). The administration of VPA led to a slight, but not statistically significant, improvement in the receptive language function (range: 144.7±41.1 to 148.2±39.7). Finally, there were no statistically significant changes in the percentage of articulation performance after taking VPA. Therefore, our data suggested that VPA did not have negative impact on the language function, but rather slightly improved problem-solving abilities.

Crianças com implante coclear: implicações linguísticas

O presente estudo exploratorio pretende investigar as capacidades linguisticas expressivas de criancas surdas com implante coclear por meio de amostras de linguagem espontânea. Para tal, sera calculada a Extensao Media do Enunciado em palavras, e analisado o uso produtivo de morfemas gramaticais. Analisou-se o discurso espontâneo de tres criancas portuguesas surdas com implante coclear e de tres criancas normo-ouvintes, emparelhadas caso a caso, tendo em conta a idade cronologica, o genero e a escolaridade parental. As criancas surdas com implante coclear produziram em media menos 2 palavras por enunciado que as criancas normo-ouvintes. Na morfologia, as criancas com implante coclear da amostra revelaram ainda nao ser capazes de produzir plurais irregulares e de usar produtivamente os morfemas flexionais nos modos conjuntivo e imperativo. Em geral, o progresso gramatical parece ser mais lento para criancas surdas com implante coclear quando comparado ao dos seus pares ouvintes. Porem, uma implantacao precoce, um maior periodo de tempo com o implante e uma implantacao bilateral parecem trazer beneficios para a linguagem expressiva nesta populacao.Palavras-chave: implantes cocleares, linguagem, gramatica.

Language Sampling for Preschoolers With Severe Speech Impairments.

The purposes of this investigation were to determine if measures such as mean length of utterance (MLU) and percentage of comprehensible words can be derived reliably from language samples of children with severe speech impairments and if such measures correlate with tools that measure constructs assumed to be related. Language samples of 15 preschoolers with severe speech impairments (but receptive language within normal limits) were transcribed independently by 2 transcribers. Nonparametric statistics were used to determine which measures, if any, could be transcribed reliably and to determine if correlations existed between language sample measures and standardized measures of speech, language, and cognition. Reliable measures were extracted from the majority of the language samples, including MLU in words, mean number of syllables per utterance, and percentage of comprehensible words. Language sample comprehensibility measures were correlated with a single word comprehensibility task. Also, language sample MLUs and mean length of the participants' 3 longest sentences from the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (Fenson et al., 2006) were correlated. Language sampling, given certain modifications, may be used for some 3-to 5-year-old children with normal receptive language who have severe speech impairments to provide reliable expressive language and comprehensibility information.

An Investigation of Language Environment Analysis Measures for Spanish-English Bilingual Preschoolers From Migrant Low-Socioeconomic-Status Backgrounds.

The current study was designed to (a) describe average hourly Language Environment Analysis (LENA) data for preschool-age Spanish-English bilinguals (SEBs) and typically developing monolingual peers and (b) compare LENA data with mean length of utterance in words (MLUw) and total number of words (TNW) calculated on a selected sample of consecutive excerpts of audio files (CEAFs). Investigators examined average hourly child vocalizations from daylong LENA samples for 42 SEBs and 39 monolingual English-speaking preschoolers. The relationship between average hourly child vocalizations, conversational turns, and adult words from the daylong samples and MLUw from a 50-utterance CEAF was examined and compared between groups. MLUw, TNW, average hourly child vocalizations, and conversational turns were lower for young SEBs than monolingual English-speaking peers. Average hourly child vocalizations were not strongly related to MLUw performance for monolingual or SEB participants (r = .29, r = .25, respectively). In a similar manner, average hourly conversational turns were not strongly related to MLUw for either group (r = .22, r = .21, respectively). Young SEBs from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds showed lower average performance on LENA measures, MLUw, and TNW than monolingual English-speaking peers. MLUw from monolinguals were also lower than typical expectations when derived from CEAFs. LENA technology may be a promising tool for communication sampling with SEBs; however, more research is needed to establish norms for interpreting MLUw and TNW from selected CEAF samples.
