Characterization, source profiles and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban dust of 14 Chinese cities

ABSTRACT Data for 16 USEPA priority PAHs were collected in urban dust from 14 cities in China between 2008 and 2022, and concentration, profile composition, and human health risk were investigated. The mean concentration of PAHs was 6.60 mg kg−1, ranging from 2.88 mg kg−1 to 13.88 mg kg−1, and it was higher than other important cities in neighboring countries of China. Among different individual PAHs, mean fluoranthene (Flr) was dominant, accounting for 15.04%, and low molecular weight PAH (LMW) was almost a third of high molecular weight PAH (HMW). The results of PAH composition profiles suggested that the proportion of different rings of PAHs increased in order: 2-ring PAHs (4.40%)< 6-ring PAHs (15.73%)< 3-ring PAHs (17.77%)< 5-ring PAHs (22.54%)< 4-ring PAHs (39.56%). The results of the source appointment suggested that pyrogenic sources and mixed sources, particularly wood, grass, coal, and diesel combustion, were the main sources of PAHs in urban dust. The results of the health risk assessment illustrated that children were more vulnerable to PAHs, and ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway to PAHs (78.152%, 67.519%, 73.206%, and 72.957% of children, adolescents, adults, and the total lifetime cancer risk (TLCR)). PAH pollution in urban dust from different cities in China was a commonly existing phenomenon, but the mean and maximum of TLCR were acceptable according to the standard established by USEPA (10−4). Based on Monte Carlo simulations, body weight (BW) was the most important uncertain input in three age groups (60.75%-91.22% contribution).

This study determined the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil around typical automobile repair workshops in Nigeria. Risk assessment associated with human contact with the soil was carried out using hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental life cancer risk (ILCR) from human unconscious ingestion and dermal contact with the soil. Soil samples were obtained at different automobile workshops in Ado-Ekiti, Western Nigeria. The PAHS in the samples were extracted using dichloromethane and extracts were cleaned up using silica-alumina gel open column chromatography. Analysis of PAHs in the soil was done using a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass selective detector operated on electron ionization mode. The results showed the mean PAHs concentration at the sampling locations ranged from 5.58 - 6.4 μg/g and the mean ∑ carcinogenic PAHs was 58.4 μg/g, equivalent to 59.39 % of total PAHs observed. The mean Toxicity equivalence (TEQs) ranged from 0.02 - 6.680 μg/g. Benzo (a) pyrene and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene have the highest toxicity equivalent. The total ILCRs from accidental ingestion and dermal contact in adults were 1 ×10^(-3) and 9.8 ×10^(-5), for adults and children respectively; both are higher than the permissible limit stipulated by the World Health Organization.The HQs obtained are several folds higher than 1. This implies high carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children and adults. The study revealed the levels of PAHs and also revealed the risks associated with human contact with the soil around automobile repair workshops.

Modeling environmental sensitivity and risk assessment of PAHs in sediments along two marine coastal areas in Egypt

Modeling the environmental sensitivity index (ESI) is vital in the planning and management processes, especially along the coastal areas. The main objectives of the study were to define the main sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), establish an ESI model, and measure the risk of PAHs on humans and the environment using various equations. The methodology of the research involved analyzing PAHs according to the EPA 550 methodology in sediments of the coastline in two important coastline areas in Egypt, namely the Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean Sea, modeling the sensitivity of PAHs using ArcGIS 10.5 by integrating different physical, biological, and land use/cover factors, identifying the sources, and performing a risk assessment. Nine sediment samples were collected from each area. The produced sensitivity map could explain the highly sensitive areas along the Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Suez coastlines (especially areas that were near drains' outlets, industrial sites, and sea ports). The highest mean PAH concentrations were Acenaphthylene and Fluorine in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf, respectively. It's obvious that the individual PAH concentrations were within the ERL, ERM, and PEL threshold limits, indicating no adverse biological impacts. The ratios of BaA/BaA + Chy, Flu/Flu + Py, and Ant/Ant + Phe gave an indication that most PAH sources were petrogenic (63.64%) and others (36.36%) were from petroleum combustion. The principle component analysis (PCA) indicated a diverse correlation among the isomer ratios and LU/LC activities. The carcinogenic risk values were in the very low category (<10−6) for both children and adults. The most significant contributors to carcinogenicity were IP and BkFlu in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf, respectively. Increasing sources of carbon in seawater, especially with climatic change, may impact the aquatic environment and have impacts on organisms and coral reefs. So it is highly recommended to keep shorelines and seawater free of oil spillage activities along the coastal areas or take actions towards this.

Atmospheric occurrences and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in a typical coking facility and surrounding areas

Coking facilities release large quantities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives into the ambient air. Here we examined the profiles, spatial distributions, and potential sources of atmospheric PAHs and their derivatives in an industrial coking plant and its surrounding environment (gaseous and particulate). The mean concentrations of PAHs, nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and brominated PAHs (BrPAHs) in the air of the coking facility were 923, 23.8, 16.7 and 4.25 ng m−³, respectively, 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those in the surrounding area and the control area. Linear regressions between contaminant concentrations and distance from the coking facility suggested that the concentrations of PAHs (r2 = 0.82, p < 0.05), NPAHs (r2 = 0.77, p < 0.01), and BrPAHs (r2 = 0.62, p < 0.01) were negatively correlated with distance. Additionally, the particle-bound fractions of PAHs and their derivatives were significantly correlated with their molecular weights (p < 0.01). Based on the calculation of the gas/particle partitioning coefficients (log KP) for PAHs and their derivatives and the corresponding subcooled liquid vapor pressures (log PL), the slope values for PAHs, NPAHs, ClPAHs, and BrPAHs ranged from −1 to −0.6, indicating that deposition of PAHs and their derivatives occurred through both adsorption and absorption. Five emissions sources were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF), including coking emissions, oil pollution, industrial and combustion sources, secondary formation, and traffic emissions, with coking emissions accounting for more than 50% of total emissions. Furthermore, the results of the health risks assessment suggested that atmospheric PAHs and their derivatives in the coke plant and surrounding area negatively impacted human health.

Risk assessment of sediment PAH, BTEX, and emerging contaminants in Chanomi Creek Niger Delta, Nigeria.

This study assessed the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), and emerging contaminants in Chanomi Creek. Sediment samples were collected between March 2019 and July 2020 to evaluate the concentrations of PAH, BTEX, and emerging contaminants using GC-MS and GC-FID with Headspace extraction. Results indicated mean PAH concentrations were 22.691 ± 15.09µg/kg. The highest individual PAH concentrations were fluorene (7.085µg/kg), naphthalene (4.517µg/kg), and phenanthrene (3.081µg/kg). Carbazole (0.828µg/kg) was discovered as a novel environmental toxin with dioxin-like toxicity and widespread prevalence in sediments. The most common congener (25%) was ethylbenzene, followed by toluene and ortho- and meta-xylene (21%) and benzene (13%). The analysis of diagnostic ratios revealed that the main factors responsible for the presence of PAHs in the study area are the residential use of firewood, emissions from industrial activities, bush burning, and petroleum slicks. The risk assessment indicated that most PAHs exceeded the permissible risk quotient values, suggesting a moderate to high ecological risk. However, cutaneous exposure to PAHs and BTEX was found to have minimal impact on human health, with no significant hazards identified in adults and children. Nevertheless, the study revealed low cancer risks associated with PAH and BTEX compounds for both age groups. The continued discharge of PAHs and BTEX compounds into Chanomi Creek could have significant long-term negative effects on human and aquatic health. Thus, contamination risk awareness programs and the development of stringent contextual thresholds for identified contaminants could enhance environmental and public health protection.

Characterization, sources, and risk assessment of PAHs in borehole water from the vicinity of an unlined dumpsite in Awka, Nigeria

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are contaminants of interest in the ecosystem due to associated health risks. Therefore, their detection in the environment is important. In this regard, the risk assessment of PAHs in borehole water near the unlined dumpsite in Anambra State was investigated. Samples of borehole water (16 each) were collected from the study and control areas during both seasons. The PAH concentrations in the borehole water samples were analyzed using gas chromatography. The mean PAH concentration in the study and control samples for the wet season varied from BL–7.65 µg/L to BL–2.98 µg/L, respectively. The study samples' dry season values ranged from BL to 3.33 µg/L, while control samples ranged from BL to 1.87 µg/L. sumPAHs for the wet and dry seasons varied from 5.8 to 13.94 µg/L and 4.25 to 10.09 µg/L for study and control samples, respectively. The four and five rings PAH were the most dominant group in the sum PAHs for the study and control samples, respectively. Diagnostic ratios suggested pyrolytic and petrogenic sources for both locations. The cluster analysis showed different sources of the congeners in the samples. The non-carcinogenic risk showed no possibility of risks via dermal and ingestion routes. In addition, the possibility of cancer risks via ingestion routes was doubtful. The carcinogenic risk index through dermal contact exceeded the acceptable limit for adults and is at a tolerable limit for children, indicating potential threats to humans, with adults more susceptible to cancer risks. Therefore, this study recommends that sanitary dumpsites be constructed for waste disposal and implementation of environmental laws to prevent underground water pollution and the environment.

Main Emission Sources and Health Risks of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Three Typical Sites in Hanoi

Particulate matter-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) were first systematically studied in downtown (XT), suburban (GL) and rural (DA) sites in winter and summer in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 2019 to 2022. The mean concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs ranged from 0.76 ng m−3 to 50.2 ng m−3 and 6.07 pg m−3 to 1.95 ng m−3, respectively. The concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs in winter were higher than in summer, except for NPAHs in XT. We found the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)/benzo[ghi]perylene (BgPe) ratio could effectively identify biomass burning in this study, in which a higher [BaP]/[BgPe] value indicates a greater effect of biomass burning on PAHs and NPAHs. The results indicated that atmospheric PAHs and NPAHs were mainly affected by motor vehicles (especially the unique motorcycles in Southeast Asia) in the summer in Hanoi. In winter, all sites were affected by the burning of rice straw to varying degrees, especially DA. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) in Hanoi was first determined through ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption. The results showed that residents in Hanoi faced high health risks, while females experienced higher health risks than males. The ingestion and dermal pathways indicated higher exposure risks than the usually considered inhalation pathway.

Spatial distribution, source identification, and human health risk assessment of PAHs and their derivatives in soils nearby the coke plants

The coking industry can generate large amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, which may negatively impact the environment and human health. In this study, soils nearby a typical coking plant were sampled to assess the impact of coke production on the surrounding residential areas and human health. The mean concentration of PAHs and their derivatives in residential area soils nearby the coke plant was 4270 ng/g dw, which was 1 order of magnitude higher than that observed in areas far from the coke plant and approximately 4 times lower than that revealed the coke plant. In addition, the results showed that coking processing area was the most contaminant area of the coke plant (mean: 74.4 μg/g dw), where was also the main source of pollutants in residential areas. In terms of vertical soils in coking plant, the maximum levels of chemicals (mean: 205 μg/g dw) were presented at the leakage of underground pipelines, where were much higher than those in surface soils, and decreased with the increase of depth. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed obvious differences in the concentrations of 6-nitrochrysene between the plant, residential areas and control areas. Meanwhile, 6-nitrochrysene had potential cancer risk (CR) for human in the coking site. Thus, 6-nitrochrysene was the most noteworthy PAH derivatives. Furthermore, the CR (mean: 5.94 × 10−5) and toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) (mean: 14.8 μg·TEQ/g) of PAHs and their derivatives was assessed in this study. This finding suggested that PAHs and their derivatives especially those extremely toxic chemicals (Nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) and Br/Cl-PAHs (XPAHs)) might pose a potential health risk to residents nearby the coke plant. The current study provides further insights into the pollution characteristics of PAHs and their derivatives in coke plants and potential risks to the workers and surrounding residents.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban street dust in Masjed Soleyman, Khuzestan, Iran: sources and health risk assessment

ABSTRACT Population growth, industrial development, and a massive increase in the application of resources have led to the deterioration of human environmental quality. Due to the carcinogenicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), these compounds have been considered by environmentalists. The potential hazard to human health from exposure to 16 priority PAHs in street dust was investigated using 21 street dust samples from different land uses in Masjed Soleyman. PAH concentrations were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results showed that the mean concentration of PAHs in residential, commercial, and busy traffic land uses was 203.82, 557.73, and 311.12 µg·kg−1 respectively. Furthermore, the maximum and minimum amounts of total PAHs were detected in commercial and residential land uses, respectively. High molecular weight PAHs consisted 58% of total PAHs in the sampling area. Based on the results of diagnostic ratios, the main source of PAHs emission was pyrogenic. Results of Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) showed that the risks were negligible although higher for children compared to adults.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Evaluation of concentrations in environmental media in Bayelsa State

Background and aim Artisanal refining of crude oil is an illegal refining process that contributes to environmental pollution through the release of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs compounds are known for their destructive effects on the environment as well as their harmful effects on human health. This study thus assessed the concentrations of PAHs in water, soil, and fish in communities where artisanal refining of crude oil is practiced in Bayelsa State. Materials and methods This descriptive, comparative study was conducted in Sampou (mildly exposed community), Gbarain, and Nembe (severely exposed communities) in Bayelsa State. Water, fish, and soil samples were collected using pre-existing environmental media collection guidelines and sent to the laboratory for GC-FID determination of the PAH concentrations. The data obtained were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results Mean and (total) PAHs concentration in water samples obtained from Sampou was 3.50 ± 4.51 (59.59) μg/L; Gbarain 1.76 ± 4.35 (29.87) μg/L and Nembe 1.90 ± 4.20 (32.25) μg/L. A significant difference in the concentrations was also identified p-value: of 0.021. The mean concentration of PAHs in soil samples obtained from Sampou was 10.73 ± 15.53 (183.38) μg/kg; Gbarain 12.00 ± 19.57 (204.32) μg/kg and Nembe was 8.49 ± 10.07 (144.48) μg/kg. Finally, the mean concentration in fish samples obtained from Sampou was 5.62 ± 5.92 (95.43) μg/kg; Gbarain 3.81 ± 5.57 (64.75) μg/kg and Nembe 4.61 ± 5.33 (78.35) μg/kg. The difference in these concentrations was however not significant. Source diagnostic ratios of the PAHs in the water included Flt/(Flt + Pyr) ratio of 0.23, 0.16, and 0.21; Ant/(Ant + Phe) ratio of 0.87, 0.76, and 0.87 as well as BaA/(BaA + Chr) ratio of 0.43, 0.51 and 0.66 in Sampou, Gbarain and Nembe respectively. Conclusion Concentrations of total PAHs in water and fish samples obtained from the three communities exceeded the acceptable limits for ƩPAHs of 2.0 μg/L and 2 μg/kg in water and fish respectively stipulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Nigerian Petroleum Regulatory Authority. ƩPAHs concentrations from the samples obtained from Sampou were also higher than the other two communities. There is a need for regular environmental monitoring of PAH concentrations, especially in oil-producing communities, and a shift of focus toward the elimination of pyrolytic sources of PAH pollution.

Assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in indoor air of local public eatery in Ado-Ekiti, Western Nigeria

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants generated during the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and organic materials. In Nigeria, most local eateries, canteens, and commercial cooking operate using charcoal or wood as fuel for energy towards food preparation and their kitchens are usually close to the sitting area of the customers. Hence, this study determined the concentrations of PAHs in some selected local public eatery in Western Nigeria; it also determined the possible implication of exposure to PAHs emanating from these kitchens to customer health. 16 PAHs were monitored in some selected eateries and canteens in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria using Polyurethane Foam (PUF) passive samplers. Analysis of PAHs was done using HP 6890/5973 GC-MS on selected ionization mode (SIM). The findings revealed the mean PAHs concentration range of 0.163 - 0.239 ngm−3. The values of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) from inhalation of PAHs present in the indoor air of local canteens are lower than WHO and USEPA permissible limit. Although local restaurants and canteens across Ado Ekiti pose no significant risk to human health on short-term exposures with regards to PAH inhalation. However continuous exposure to these pollutants in these indoor environments is of great concern.

Annual exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban environments linked to wintertime wood-burning episodes

Abstract. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants in fine particulate matter (PM) long known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, but much is unknown about the importance of local and remote sources for PAH levels observed in population-dense urban environments. A year-long sampling campaign in Athens, Greece, where more than 150 samples were analyzed for 31 PAHs and a wide range of chemical markers, was combined with positive matrix factorization (PMF) to constrain the temporal variability, sources, and carcinogenic risk associated with PAHs. It was found that biomass burning (BB), a source mostly present during wintertime intense pollution events (observed for 18 % of measurement days in 2017), led to wintertime PAH levels that were 7 times higher than in other seasons and was as important for annual mean PAH concentrations (31 %) as diesel and oil (33 %) and gasoline (29 %) sources. The contribution of non-local sources, although limited on an annual basis (7 %), increased during summer, becoming comparable to that of local sources combined. The fraction of PAHs (12 members that were included in the PMF analysis) that was associated with BB was also linked to increased health risk compared to the other sources, accounting for almost half the annual PAH carcinogenic potential (43 %). This can result in a large number of excess cancer cases due to BB-related high PM levels and urges immediate action to reduce residential BB emissions in urban areas facing similar issues.

Heavy Metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Commonly Consumed Crayfish in Nigeria and Health Risk Implications

Heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental pollutants. Its increased presence in the aquatic environment has raised serious concerns about its effect on aquatic life and by extension, a man who is at the apex of the food chain. This research investigated the concentrations of selected heavy metals (Lead, Nickel, Cadmium and Chromium) and PAHs in two species of commonly consumed crayfish in Nigeria and their health risk implications. Wet digestion procedure and atomic absorption spectrometry were used for heavy metal determination while the United States environmental protection agency (USEPA) test method for evaluation of solid waste was used for PAHs analysis. Results showed that Pb, Ni and Cd in both species of crayfish were above tolerable limits. The mean level for Ni in Litopenaeus setiferus was 3.0630.116mg/kg and 5.1571.676mg/kg in Litopenaeus stylirostris. The mean value for Cd in L. setiferus was 0.8330.070 mg/kg and 0.6000.025 mg/kg for L.stylirostris. The mean value for Pb in L. setiferus was 4.5500.656mg/kg and 3.6430.486 mg/kg in L. stylirostris. Mean values for Cr in L. setiferus was 0.0870.082 mg/kg and 0.000 mg/kg in L. stylirostris. Mean PAHs concentrations in L. setiferus and L. stylirostris were 0.0036±0.002 ppm and 0.0083±0.004 ppm respectively. Health risk assessment revealed an increasing health risk due to the consumption of both species of crayfish. Results for PAHs in both species of crayfish showed compliance with set limits. Its presence in fish food however suggests possible health concerns especially with regards to their carcinogenic tendencies. Anthropogenic activities should be closely monitored as bioaccumulation along the food chain is implicated.

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and effects on neonatal anthropometric indices and thyroid-stimulating hormone in a Middle Eastern population

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) evokes extensive concerns regarding public health. Monitoring the pregnant women's exposure can be considered a suitable alternative to assess the fetus's exposure. This study aimed to monitor pregnant women's exposure (n = 126) to PAHs using a biomonitoring approach to evaluate effects on anthropometric indices and neonatal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in Shiraz, Iran. PAHs priority compounds were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after separating blood serum and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method. Information on anthropometric indices, neonatal TSH levels, and data from the respondents was obtained from medical records and questionnaires. The mean PAHs concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 327.91 ng/g lipid. There was no significant difference between the measured PAHs in maternal serum at the seventh month and pregnancy termination except for ACY (p-Value<0.05). Regression analysis results showed a significant correlation (p-value<0.05) between exposure to passive smoke and total PAHs concentrations. There was no significant relationship between exposure to PAHs and weight, height, head circumference, and Apgar score of newborns. The results showed TSH decreased by 0.99 units as ACE increased per unit (β = -0.001). This study is the first to evaluate relationships between prenatal exposure to PAHs and effects on newborn health indicators, including TSH levels in a Middle Eastern population. Future studies are suggested to perform detailed assessments of PAHs intake sources, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and children.

Octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) dependent movement and time lagging of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to lake sediments: A case study of Taihu Lake, China

Understanding the movement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to sediments is important for achieving long-term pollution control of PAHs in sediments. In this study, by exploring the correlation of individual PAHs concentrations (CPAHs) in Taihu Lake sediments reported in the past twenty years with their annual emissions (EPAHs) in the lake region, it was observed that mean concentrations of PAHs with low logKow (i.e., logKow≤4.00) in Taihu Lake sediments were correlated best with their emissions without lagging between the sediment sampling time and the PAHs emitting time. However, for PAHs with middle logKow (i.e., 4.00<logKow≤4.57) or high logKow (i.e., logKow>4.57), their mean concentrations in sediments were correlated best with the emissions of PAHs emitted 1 or 2 years before the sediment sampling time. The longer lagging time of PAHs with middle or high logKow from emission sources to lake sediments could be attributed to their retardation in soils and river sediments around the lake. Moreover, the retardation in soils and river sediments is dependent on PAHs logKow and degradation half-life, indicating the dependence of PAHs concentration in sediments on their environmental behaviors, including sorption and degradation. Kow dependent movement and the time lagging observed in Taihu Lake for PAHs from emission sources to sediments could be valuable for developing measures to control PAHs, especially for congeners with high logKow.

Polycyclic and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution characteristics and carcinogenic risk assessment of indoor kitchen air during cooking periods in rural households in North China.

Medium-flow atmospheric samplers were used to collect particulate (PM2.5) and gaseous samples from the indoor kitchen of each of 35 randomly selected rural houses in North China while a meal was being cooked. The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 9 nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in the samples were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This study provided the real PAH and NPAH pollution characteristics and carcinogenic risk produced by cooking in rural indoor kitchens in North China. The mean PAH and NPAH concentrations in air in the indoor kitchens during cooking periods were 4049.1 and 1741.6 ng/m3, respectively. The PAH and NPAH concentrations were lower in the particulate phase than the gaseous phase. The mean PAH and NPAH concentrations were much higher for cooking using coal than for cooking using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or electricity. The PAH and NPAH benzo[a]pyrene toxic equivalent (TEQBaP) concentrations for cooking using coal were 1823.3 and 2760.9 ng/m3, respectively. Lower PAH and NPAH concentrations were found in kitchens with than without range hoods. Range hoods decreased the PAH and NPAH TEQBaP concentrations by 68.8% and 61.9%, respectively. Appropriate fuel and ventilation choice will improve air pollution in indoor kitchens during cooking. The results provide important evidence for changing cooking habits and developing policies for cooking in rural China.

Chemical assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on processed &lt;I&gt;Clarias gariepinus&lt;/I&gt; (Burchell, 1822) from different energy sources

Chemical assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on processed African catfish was carried out. Fish samples were processed using charcoal, firewood and gas oven following standard procedures. Gas chromatographic analysis was employed for PAHs determination. Results showed that mean PAHs concentrations in fish samples were observed to be: 737.86ng/μl in firewood-smoked samples, 1451.82ng/μl in charcoal and 1990.23ng/μl in oven-dried fish. The highest mean concentration of PAHs was 906.93±0.01 ng/μl for pyrene from the charcoal-smoked samples. Lower molecular weight PAHs were generally dominant in tested samples. The number of PAHs ring showed significant variation (p&lt;0.05) with respect to processing methods. Inference from the results showed that differently processed fish samples were of good quality and are suitable for human consumption. However, the charcoal processed samples appeared to be the best when considering the case of incomplete combustion of the wood during the drying process. Therefore, the use of charcoal in fish processing is hereby recommended. Also, it is suggested that fish processors be trained on the appropriate handling and processing methods to adopt in order to enhance the production of high-quality contaminants-free fish products.&#x0D; Keywords: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH), anthropogenic, combustion, smoking methods, contaminants.

Pet hair as a potential sentinel of human exposure: Investigating partitioning and exposures from OPEs and PAHs in indoor dust, air, and pet hair from China

We investigated the levels, compositions, and partitioning behaviors of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor air, dust, and pet hair from North China, as well as their potential exposures for humans and pets. The mean OPE concentrations in the indoor air (n = 19), dust (n = 26), and pet hair (n = 29) samples were 52.1 ng/m3, 3510 ng/g, and 1440 ng/g; while the mean PAH concentrations were 369 ng/m3, 6000 ng/g, and 22.6 ng/g, respectively. The matrix-air partitioning of OPEs and PAHs may reach equilibrium for compounds with octanol-air partition coefficients (logKoa) between 7 and 11 for dust and logKoa < 12 for pet hair. Correlation analysis suggested that pet hair could be used as a sentinel for the exposure to certain PAHs, e.g., phenanthrene (PHE) or fluoranthene (FLA), via exposure to indoor air. This work suggests that pet hair may be a better sentinel than air and dust for human exposure to OPEs and PAHs across different indoor microenvironments. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) to OPEs and PAHs via air inhalation, dust ingestion, and dermal absorption were calculated for children, adults, and pets. The median ΣEDIs for children, adults, and pets were 26.7, 5.40, and 55.0 ng/kg/day for ΣOPEs, and 68.8, 19.1, and 130 ng/kg/day for ΣPAHs, respectively. Air inhalation was the main exposure route to PAHs and OPEs with logKoa < 10, whereas dust ingestion was the main exposure route to those with logKoa > 10.
