Assessing heavy metal contamination in a Brazilian metropolis: a case study with a focus on (bio)indicators.

The continuous expansion of the global vehicle fleet poses a growing threat to environmental quality through heavy metal contamination. In this scenario, monitoring to safeguard public health in urban areas is necessary. Our study involved the collection of 36 street dust and 29 moss samples from roads of a Brazilian metropolis (Recife) with varying traffic intensities as follows: natural reserve (0 vehicles per day), low (< 15,000 vehicles per day), medium (15,000-30,000 vehicles per day), and high (> 30,000 vehicles per day). ICP-AES analysis was performed to determine the concentrations of nine potentially toxic metals (Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) to assess the influence of vehicular flow on urban contamination. In the street dust samples, the mean metal concentrations (mg kg-1) exhibited the following order: Ba (503.7) > Mn (303.0) > Zn (144.4) > Cu (95.3) > Cr (56.1) > Pb (34.2) > V (28.7) > Ni (11.3) > Cd (1.5). Conversely, in the moss samples, the metal concentration order was as follows (mg kg-1): Mn (63.8) > Zn (62.5) > Ba (61.0) > Cu (17.7) > Cr (8.0) > V (7.3) > Pb (7.0) > Ni (2.9) > Cd (0.3). Roads with higher traffic volumes exhibited the highest metal enrichments in moss samples for all metals and in dust samples for Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, and V. However, dust from low-flow roads had higher enrichments for Ba, Cu, and Zn, indicating the influential role of other traffic-related factors in metal deposition. Our findings highlight traffic flow as the predominant source of pollution in urban centers, with both street dust and moss serving as sensitive indicators of metal input attributable to vehicular traffic. These indicators offer valuable insights for urban quality monitoring and pollution control efforts.

Research Progress on Migratory Water Birds: Indicators of Heavy Metal Pollution in Inland Wetland Resources of Punjab, Pakistan

The heavy metal burden on natural freshwater ecosystems is uninterruptedly increasing, which could affect their biodiversity, particularly regarding avian species. Three river barrages were selected for the sampling of water birds from autumn 2021 to spring 2022. Seven heavy metals—nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and manganese (Mn)—were estimated in the hearts and livers of Fulica atra (Common Coot), Anas strepera (Gad-wall), and Anas crecca (Eurasian Teal) (Linnaeus, 1758) by atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean concentrations of metals were found to be significantly (p &lt; 0.05) different among the sam-pling sites, species, and tissues. In the livers of F. atra and A. strepera, respectively, the highest mean concentration among the metals belonged to Zn (521 µg/g), and the lowest belonged to Cd (0.17 µg/g). The concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Co were highest in A. strepera heart samples. However, the concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Mn were found to be highest in the livers of F. atra. A comparison between both tissues indicated that the concentration of Ni is significantly (p &lt; 0.05) higher (except for F. atra from Trimmu barrage) in the livers of water birds and that the concentration of Cd is significantly higher in the hearts of water birds. The mean metal concentrations were higher than the background limits reported in various studies, suggesting that the wintering water birds of Pakistan are under a significant load of heavy metal pollution. Histopathological analysis suggested that the observed heavy metals altered the normal histologies of hearts and livers of Fulica atra (Common Coot), Anas strepera (Gadwall), and Anas crecca (Eurasian Teal) sampled from three wetlands of Punjab Pakistan.

Soil pollution indices and health risk assessment of metal(loid)s in the agricultural soil of pistachio orchards

Elevated levels of metal(loid)s in soil may pose potential threats to the ecosystem and can be harmful for human health. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ni were determined in agricultural soil collected from 45 pistachio orchards around Feizabad city, Khorasan Razavi province, Iran using ICP-OES. Also, soil pollution indices including contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were evaluated. In addition, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices were estimated. The mean concentrations of metal(loid)s were in the order of Ni = 466.256 > Cr = 120.848 > Pb = 12.009 > As = 5.486 > Cd = 0.394 mg/kg. Concentrations of As, Cd and Pb in the soil samples were within their respective permissible limits set by World Health Organization (WHO). But concentrations of Cr and Ni in 84.4 and 100% of the samples, respectively exceeded the WHO allowable limits. The CF, PLI and Igeo showed that soil of some of the pistachio orchards was contaminated with some metals. The possible sources of the metals in the soil are application of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, manures as well as irrigation water. Hazard quotient (HQ) ad Hazard index (HI) values from soil of all the orchards were found to be well below the respective threshold limit (1), suggesting that there is no immediate non-cancer threat arising from the contamination at all the orchards with metal(loid)s for children and adults. The highest cancer risk values (1.13E-02 for children and 1.25E-03 for adults) were estimated for Ni in the soil. Collectively, this study provides valuable information to improve the soil in the pistachio orchards to reduce metal(loid)s contamination and minimize the associated health risks to the population in the area.

Assessment of bioremediation potential of Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander for sustainable management of vehicular released metals in roadside soils

Land transportation is a major source of heavy metal contamination along the roadside, posing significant risks to human health through inhalation, oral ingestion, and dermal contact. Therefore, this study has been designed to determine the concentrations of vehicular released heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cu) in roadside soil and leaves of two commonly growing native plant species (Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander).Two busy roads i.e., Lahore-Okara road (N-5) and Okara-Faisalabad roads (OFR) in Punjab, Pakistan, were selected for the study. The data were collected from five sites along each road during four seasons. Control samples were collected ~ 50 m away from road. The metal content i.e. lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu) were determined in the plant leaves and soil by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Significantly high amount of all studied heavy metals were observed in soil and plant leaves along both roads in contrast to control ones. The mean concentration of metals in soil ranged as Cd (2.20–6.83 mg/kg), Pb (4.53–15.29 mg/kg), Ni (29.78–101.26 mg/kg), and Cu (61.68–138.46 mg/kg) and in plant leaves Cd (0.093–0.53 mg/kg), Pb (4.31–16.34 mg/kg), Ni (4.13–16.34 mg/kg) and Cu (2.98–32.74 mg/kg). Among roads, higher metal contamination was noted along N-5 road. Significant temporal variations were also noted in metal contamination along both roads. The order of metal contamination in soil and plant leaves in different seasons was summer > autumn > spring > winter. Furthermore, the metal accumulation potential of Calotropis procera was higher than that of Nerium oleander. Therefore, for sustainable management of metal contamination, the plantation of Calotropis procera is recommended along roadsides.

Determination of metals in water samples within the irrigation area in Telo District, Kaffa Zone, South Western Ethiopia

Water contamination due to the accumulation of metal is not only an environmental problem, but it is also a global issue. The river flows alongside the town in its downward direction, where runoff from the uplands and municipal trash discharge during floods may contribute to the contamination of the river. Despite the fact that this river is the area's primary source of water, the water near the effluent release point is extremely corrosive. The nearby settlements depend on this untreated river water for drinking, irrigation, and other domestic uses since they have no access to a municipal water supply. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the degree of metal contamination in the Obasho river water samples collected from irrigation water sites in the Gurguba region. Three samples were collected from each of four irrigation water sites, which were 1.5 km away from each other. A total of 12 water samples were collected by following the standard water sample collection protocol. 100 mL of the irrigation water sample was digested in aquaragia, and AAS was used to determine the concentration of metals in the water samples. The concentration ranges of some metals were: Ca (1.84387–2.810824 mg/L), and its maximum limit in FAO is 20.0 mg/L; Mg (3.176942–4.543031 mg/L), and its maximum limit in FAO is 5.0 mg/L; Cr (0.039227–0.047872 mg/L), and its WHO/FAO permissible level is 0.1 mg/L; Co (0.036703–0.057218 mg/L), and its permissibility level is 0.05 mg/L WHO/FAO, Cd (0.006198–0.02856 mg/L), whose maximum limit in FAO is 0.01 mg/L, and Pb (0.065138–0.091131 mg/L) WHO/FAO permissible level is 5.0 mg/L. The mean concentrations of metals (Ca, Mg, Co, Cd, Pb, and Cr) in all study sites were below the regulatory limits except for Co and Cd; no water contamination was caused by these metals at the study sites. However, the mean concentration levels of Co in all study sites were above regulatory limits. The mean concentration of Co at Konit Kochito and Cd at Geremew Mamo, Konit Kochito, and Gereno Gebito is also greater than regulatory limits. A pair-wise comparison of some metals in study sites was carried out, thus the mean concentration of the irrigation water sites sample was significantly different from some metal concentration (p < 0.05) at the 95% confidence level. Generally, there was no cumulative effect of water contamination caused by Ca, Mg, Co, Cd, Pb, and Cr in Gurguba Kebele study sites, and it may not appear to pose very serious environmental problems at this moment. Thus, determining the metal content in irrigation water samples is crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of agricultural practices. It raises awareness regarding the contents of heavy metal contamination and sets limits for acceptable metal concentrations. It has also vital role in maintaining soil health.

Surface water pollution by some heavy metals in a remote island, Hatiya, northern Bay of Bengal

IntroductionMetal contamination in surface water in urban cities has become a common scenario in underdeveloped and developing countries. Nowadays, the extent of this contamination is suspected to be traced in remote islands due to the transportation of metals with downward water flow. Unfortunately, we found a dearth of research on our remote island, where thousands of people live and use surface water for their daily needs. ObjectivesThe current study aims to investigate the status of heavy metals in surface water from a remote island, Hatiya Coast, to determine the existence of heavy metals and their risks to human health. Ten surface water samples were collected, and their concentrations were measured using AAS. Later, various pollution indices were analyzed to understand their pollution level. ResultsThe mean metal concentrations were ranked in descending order of Mg (65.44 mg.L−1)> Fe (0.375 mg.L−1)> Zn (0.139 mg.L−1)>Mn (0.016 mg.L−1)> and Cu was below the detection limit (BDL). According to different metal pollution indexes, the surface water of the Hatiya coast is low to moderately polluted. The standard HEI value was 1.58, and the range was 1.29–2.25, indicating that all sampling stations had a low level of metal contamination. The mean and range of HPI values were found at 44.58 and 34.33–69.33, respectively. All of the sampling stations indicated low pollution levels except sampling station 6. NPI values revealed moderate contamination in stations 2, 3, and 7. According to the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) for adults and children, heavy metals were found to have no carcinogenic risks for children and adults through dermal exposure. ConclusionAlong with the metals coming from upstream, several local sources of heavy metals were identified during fieldwork, including metallurgical businesses, oil spills from the ship, and some trawlers associated with fishing activities. Overall, these findings would be valuable for aquaculture sectors and future researchers to compare, correlate, and understand the pollution level of the island and serve as a foundation for conducting further investigations in similar island environments, both locally and globally.

Ecological risk assessment due to heavy metals prevalence in the sediments of Kayamkulam estuary, Kerala, India

ABSTRACT Kayamkulam estuary, popular for inland fishing, in southern coast of India, Kerala lies in close proximity to major industrialisation set ups (mining companies). In the present baseline study, the heavy metal concentration in the sediments of this estuary were analysed to evaluate its pollution status and consequent risks to the environment. The extent of contamination was assessed in the 50 samples collected from 10 transects using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP – OES), where the study found the mean concentration of metals to fall in the following order as: Fe [17,817.9 ppm] > Mn [117.35 ppm] > Cr [88.85 ppm] >Zn [53.68 ppm] > Ni [49.25 ppm] > Pb [20.02 ppm] > Co [13.34 ppm] > Cu [4.80 ppm]. Among these metals, Zn was found abundantly in the polluted sites, due to anthropogenic activities, such as mining and metallurgical processes. However, the values of the risk indices computed including [(Igeo), (PLI), (EF) and (PERI)], were low and reveals the present study area to be restrained from ecological risk. The outcome of the study, acting as baseline data will address pollution related problems in future, especially in biota.

Seasonal Monitoring of Heavy Metal Pollution in Water and Zebra Mussels Dreissena polymorpha as a Potential Bioindicator Species from Lake Habitat.

In aquatic ecosystem, metal pollution is an important environmental hazard. Mussels as a bioindicator species are often used for assessment the presence of potentially toxic metals. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the effect of seasonal variations on some heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, As, Zn and Cu) accumulation in water and Dreissena polymorpha from lake habitat. Our result indicated that Zn accumulated at a very high level in the zebra mussels while As accumulated at a high level in water samples. Seasonal variations significantly affected Cu concentration in the water samples (P < 0.05) while Cr concentration in the mussel samples was significantly affected by seasonal variations (P < 0.05). According to the water analysis, mean concentrations of metals are below the maximum limits established by the World Health Organization and USEPA, except As. Overall, our data emphasize anthropogenic pollution in the Turkish aquatic environment and confirm the use of D. polymorpha as a prospective biomonitor for metal polluted sites'.

Ecological Risks Assessment Arising from the Atmospheric Deposition of Heavy Metals in the River Indus Near Kotri Barrage, Sindh, Pakistan

ABSTRACT This study aims to assess ecological risks from heavy metal atmospheric deposition in the Indus River at Kotri Barrage, Sindh, Pakistan. Monitoring occurred at four locations, yielding 40 air samples analyzed for heavy metals via Triple Quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (TQ-ICP-MS). Pollution indicators, including Contaminant Factor (CF), Degree of Contamination (CD), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), and Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index (NIPI), quantified contaminant levels. Air monitoring revealed PM2.5 concentrations exceeding regulatory guidelines at all four sites. Heavy metal mean concentrations ranked as follows: Fe > Cr > Pb > Mn > As > Cu > Ni > Cd > Mo > Co, and deposition fluxes followed this order: Fe > Pb > Cr > Mn > As > Cu > Ni > Cd > Mo > Co. Pollution indices indicated moderate to extreme pollution for Fe, Cr, Cd at all sites, and Pb at site D. Emissions from a nearby coal-fired power plant and vehicular sources were identified as primary contributors to high heavy metal deposition. The Ecological Risk Index ranged from 150 to 600, signifying substantial ecological risk linked to Cd. These findings offer crucial insights for governmental agencies and policymakers to address pollution issues arising from heavy metal atmospheric deposition in the Indus River near Kotri Barrage.

Elemental and Ecological Health Risk Assessment of Wastewater and Soils Collected During the Wet Season at Selected Industrial Sites in Kano Nigeria

In this study, the elemental analysis of soils and effluents collected from selected manufacturing industries in Kano metropolis of Nigeria West Africa for the wet season of 2020 has been carried out using standard analytical methods, Analar grade reagents and approved calibrated equipment. All samples were analyzed in triplicates and the outcome values are presented as mean concentration in mg/kg. The mean concentration of heavy metals evaluated such as Co, Cd, Cr, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni and Pb show mixed levels (excessive, moderate and normal levels) when compared to the recommended levels by NESREA. Contamination factor (CF) and contamination degree (Cd) was determined for investigated elements in all 58 samples. CF for Ni, Pb, Fe, Mn and Zn were all ˂ 1, implying no potential ecological risk contamination. Enrichment factor (EF) was calculated to determine anthropogenic input of metals in all the samples investigated. High enrichment factor for samples MW, MS, ADS, FS, PPS, MW, DW, PPW, MyW, DFS, DS, AS, LZS, 7upW, and DFW (67.2 % of the samples), The mean concentration of the metals is an indication of pollution was tested with a high implication outcome most likely, when samples are continuously emptied into the environment untreated. Safe to remind us that heavy metals are toxic with excessive human health risks.

Heavy metal status in cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) soils and beans: the case of Abuakwa North Municipality of Eastern Region, Ghana.

In recent times, public concerns over the potential accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soils and crops due to the excessive use of agrochemicals are increasing. This study was conducted in the Abuakwa North Municipality of Eastern Region, Ghana, to assess the status of heavy metals in cocoa soils and beans. Cocoa farms aged between 10 and 20years and have received agrochemicals for at least 5years were selected, and their adjacent forests were used as controls. Soil samples and cocoa pods were collected randomly and processed for laboratory analysis. The study discovered that across the sampling sites, heavy metal concentrations in soil were below permissible limits. However, contamination factor and geo-accumulation index results revealed that Tontro cocoa farms were considerably contaminated and moderately polluted respectively with Cu, probably due to long-term fungicide application. The concentrations of Fe (39.3-47.1mgkg-1) and Zn (54.8-70.0mgkg-1) in the cocoa beans across the communities were below the FAO/WHO's safe limit of 99.4mgkg-1 and 73.0mgkg-1 respectively. Lead (0.03-0.06mgkg-1) and Cd (0.12-0.20mgkg-1) concentrations were below the EU's maximum allowable level and Codex Alimentarius Commission's limit of 1.0mgkg-1 respectively. However, bean Cu content in the Tontro farm (51.5mgkg-1) was slightly above the EU's recommended maximum limit of 50.0mgkg-1, possibly due to the continuous application of copper-based fungicides. The study showed that, overall, agrochemicals used for cocoa farming in Abuakwa North Municipality of Ghana did not cause serious harm to the soils and beans, since the mean metal concentrations were not alarming and guarantee public health safety.

Physicochemical Parameters of Ground Water Quality in Crown Estate and Its Environs in Okada Town, Edo State, Nigeria

The evaluation of drinking water quality mainly by determination of some physicochemical parameters present is of paramount importance due to the impact on human health. The present study presents investigation on the physicochemical parameters of ground water samples collected from selected boreholes, in Crown Estate and environs, in Okada, Benin City, Nigeria. Samples were collected from selected boreholes and pH taken and immediately taken to the laboratory to investigate some selected physicochemical characteristics. The mean concentrations of metals in the water samples followed a decreasing order: Zn (0.5122mg/l) &gt; Fe (0.4378mg/l) &gt; Mn (0.0594mg/l) &gt; Ni (0.0358mg/l) &gt; Cr (0.0302mg/l) &gt; Cu (0.3000mg/l), Pb and Cd were below detection limit. The laboratory results of all the selected physico-chemical parameters analyzed when compared with the world health organization (WHO), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) and Nigerian Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) standards for water showed that all the selected Physicochemical parameters with the exception of iron (for NAFDAC) were within national and international standards limits for drinking water.

Bioaccumulation and sources of metal(loid)s in fish species from a subtropical river in Bangladesh: a public health concern.

Toxic metals and freshwater fish's metalloid contamination are significant environmental concerns for overall public health. However, the bioaccumulation and sources of metal(loids) in freshwater fishes from Bangladesh still remain unknown. Thus, the As, Pb, Cd, and Cr concentrations in various freshwater fish species from the Rupsha River basin were measured, including Tenualosa ilisha, Gudusia chapra, Otolithoides pama, Setipinna phasa, Mystus vittatus, Glossogobius giuris, and Pseudeutropius atherinoides. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine metal concentrations. The mean concentrations of metal(loids) in the fish muscle (mg/kg) were found to be As (1.53) > Pb (1.25) > Cr (0.51) > Cd (0.39) in summer and As (1.72) > Pb (1.51) > Cr (0.65) > Cd (0.49) in winter. The analyzed fish species had considerably different metal(loid) concentrations with seasonal variation, and the distribution of the metals (loids) was consistent with the normal distribution. The demersal species, M. vittatus, displayed the highest bio-accumulative value over the summer. However, in both seasons, none of the species were bio-accumulative. According to multivariate statistical findings, the research area's potential sources of metal(loid) were anthropogenic activities linked to geogenic processes. Estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient (THQ), and carcinogenic risk (CR) were used to assess the influence of the risk on human health. The consumers' THQs values were < 1, indicating that there were no non-carcinogenic concerns for local consumers. Both categories of customers had CRs that fell below the permissible range of 1E - 6 to 1E - 4, meaning they were not at any increased risk of developing cancer. The children's group was more vulnerable to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards. Therefore, the entry of metal(loids) must be regulated, and appropriate laws must be used by policymakers.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in PM2.5 and PM10 in Sarajevo air, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) associated with PM2.5 and PM10 in Sarajevo air, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) have been studied. A total of 136 PM2.5 and PM10 samples were simultaneously collected from 21 February to 11 November 2020. Metal contents were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, flame (FAAS) and electrothermal (ETAAS) techniques. The mean concentrations of metals in PM10 are 2.93 ng/m3 (Cd), 7.21 ng/m3 (Cr), 12.02 ng/m3 (Cu), 126 ng/m3 (Fe), 20.74 ng/m3 (Mn), 6.98 ng/m3 (Ni), 8.74 ng/m3 (Pb) and 128 ng/m3 (Zn). In PM2.5 samples the mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn are 0.39, 4.06, 2.26, 110, 0.63, 1.93 and 5.28 ng/m3, respectively. Pb was not detected in PM2.5 samples. Strong correlation was obtained for metal pairs Mn-Cu in PM10 and moderate for Ni-Fe in PM2.5. The health risk assessment shows that the adult population of Sarajevo is at increased lifetime risk of experiencing cancer because of exposure to Cd concentrations in PM10.

ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION AND CONTAMINATION IN WASTE DUMPSITES WITHIN GUSAU AREA, NORTHWEST NIGERIA

The aims of this research work are to determine the concentrations of metals present in waste dump soils, to evaluate the metal contamination of the soils using the pollution indices and to identify whether the sources of heavy metals were natural and/or anthropogenic. Analysis of the soil was carried out using EDXRF technique. Three points were assessed from each three wastes dumpsites (Hira Dekodi, Low Cost and Old Market), using portable XRF equipment for the in-situ data acquisition. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis and environmental pollution index models. The data showed mean concentrations of the heavy metals analyzed in the following order Fe &gt; Zn &gt; Mn &gt; Cr &gt; Pb &gt; Ni. The mean concentrations of these three metals (Pb, Zn and Cu) exceeded their average crustal abundance, which is an indication of possible contamination. Environmental pollution models applied to the geochemical dataset revealed Zn, Pb and Cu as considerable/moderately contaminated, which generally indicated severe potential contamination in the investigated area. Other metals such as Mn, Cr, Ni and Fe showed low contamination factors. However, from the results of geo-accumulation/ecological risk index of the heavy metals, the study areas were unpolluted and indicated low ecological risk factors with respect to the analyzed parameters. The chemical assay revealed positive and significant relationship between Cu, Pb, Mn and Fe while Cr showed positive and significant relationship with Mn, Fe and Cu. Cadmium, Nickel and Zinc Concentration in Some Common Fruits Samples Collected from Different Super Shops Located in Dhaka City and Probable Health Risk Assessment

Heavy metals concentration in fruits samples collected from different super shops were determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and potential health risk from the consumption of these fruits was estimated. Mean concentration of Cd, Ni and Zn in the studied fruits samples (Fuji Apple, Green Apple, Red Grape, Green Grape, Pear, Malta and Pomegranate) were within the range of 0.00 to 0.15, 0.17 to 10.78, 3.44 to 19.88 mg/kg for Agora; 0.00 to 0.20, 0.00 to 42.75, 3.20 to 13.40 mg/ kg for Meena Bazaar and 0.00 to 0.15, 0.60 to 18.65, 4.31 to 17.68 mg/kg of dry weight, for Swapno, respectively. Cadmium concentration was the highest in Fuji Apple and Red Grape (0.15 mg/kg) samples, which was higher than MAC value by FAO/ WHO, collected from Swapno. The highest Nickel concentration (42.75 mg/kg) was found in Green Grape, collected from Meena Bazaar, which was 53.44 times higher than MAC value according to FAO/WHO. Mean concentration of metals were found above the maximum allowable limit in most of the fruits though mean Average Daily Intake (ADI) values were below the PMTDI value for all fruits. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) values for all metals were below 1.00 which signifies that these fruits were not carcenogenic but continuous consumption of some of high metals containing fruits sold in the market is imposing threat to food security

The use of marine sponge species as a bioindicator to monitor metal pollution in Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

The existing data on trace elements of benthic sea organisms is scarce. Yet, the pressing issue of environmental contamination has spurred a surge in the use of organisms as biomonitors. In this study, sediment cores were sampled with the sponges, and metal concentrations were determined in both samples using ICP-MS. The mean concentrations of metals in benthic sediments and sponge species analyzed in this study differed significantly (Sediment >Phorbas species > Negombata magnifica > Callyspongia species > Amphimedon chloros). This could be due to the varying capacity of each sponge species to accumulate a particular metal by different means. Negombata magnifica and Phorbas species appear to be indicators, accumulators, or hyper-accumulators of Cu and Mn, while Callyspongia species is an indicator, accumulator, or hyper-accumulator of Cu only due to bioconcentration factor > 1 for the aforementioned metals. Concentrations of Cu and As in sediment were below the Effects Range Median but above the Effects Range Low threshold, hence the need to give more attention to these metals. This research provides a baseline dataset for designing monitoring strategies on this ecosystem and using sponge species for biomonitoring.

Microplastic pollution and heavy metal risk assessment in Perca fluviatilis from Anzali wetland: Implications for environmental health and human consumption

The worldwide increase of anthropogenic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems has raised concerns, particularly heavy metals and microplastics (MPs), posing potential health risks for aquatic organisms. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the presence of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Hg, Zn, Mn, As, V, Co, Cr, Fe, and Se) and MPs in the muscle, liver, and gills of Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus 1758 from Anzali Wetland during the autumn-winter 2021 and spring-summer 2022 periods. The mean concentration of metals in the muscle was lower than that in the liver and gills. The highest level of metal in the liver, gills, and muscle was related to Fe (4.049 ± 1.192, 3.605 ± 0.878, and 3.459 ± 0.895 μg/g, respectively), while the lowest concentration in the muscle was related to Co (0.011 ± 0.004 μg/g), and in the liver and gills was related to Se (0.013 ± 0.004 and 0.012 ± 0.003 μg/g, respectively) and As (0.013 ± 0.004 and 0.012 ± 0.004 μg/g, respectively). The concentration of metals in summer was higher than in other seasons. The Hazard Index (HI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values below 1 indicate that consuming this fish does not pose any risk to consumers in terms of metal contamination. Moreover, MPs were identified in the gills of all fish, while no MPs were found in the muscle and liver. The mean number of MPs in the gills was 3.5 ± 1.02 item/individual, and the number of MPs in spring (4.6 ± 0.84 item/individual) was higher than in autumn, winter and summer (4.2 ± 1.22, 3 ± 1.63, and 2.4 ± 0.51 item/individual, respectively). The MPs were dominated by fiber in shape, black in color, 300–1000 μm in size, and nylon in polymer. No significant correlation was found between metal concentrations and MPs, except for Co.

Potential health risk assessment of selected metal concentrations of Indian backwater oyster, (Crassostrea madrasensis) in Sri Lanka

The study was conducted to assess the health risks of selected metals in cultured and wild Crassostrea madrasensis in Sri Lanka over 13 months. Metal concentrations varied monthly, and Zn and Cu concentrations significantly varied between cultured and wild oysters. The mean metal concentrations (mg kg−1) were accumulated in order of Zn (1220.60) > Mg (496.97) > Fe (356.30) > Cu (114.95) > Pb (23.20) > Cd (6.15) > As (3.09) > Hg (0.12). The metal concentrations were well below the standard guidelines given by international standards except for Pb, Cd, As and Zn. The weekly intakes of Hg, Cu, Fe, and Zn from C.madrasensis were below the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake while Cd exceeded the established limit. The calculated non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices for Hg, As, Pb and Zn were within safe levels and the values for Cd exceeded the limit revealing carcinogenic results with long-term consumption. Hence, creating proper awareness and a suitable depuration system ensures human health and supports export-oriented markets.

Spatial and temporal distribution of geochemical elements and their processes in different size fractions–Miri River (NW Borneo)

The toxicity, persistence, and propensity for accumulation of metals in aquatic environments have raised significant concerns globally. Expansion of urbanization with the growth of industrial and agricultural sectors in Miri City results in a high concentration of pollutants that flow directly into the Miri River. Hence, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the Miri River water quality, focusing on spatial and temporal variations. River water samples were collected in two different time periods and analysed for physico-chemical parameters includes major ions, nutrients, metals and isotopes. Particularly, the metals were analysed in different size fractions (particulate and colloid) of the suspended solids. Geochemical plots, pollution index, geochemical modelling and factor analysis were used for the data analysis. Interpretation of data reveals that the mean concentration of metals in river water were increased from downstream to the upstream of the river irrespective of the seasons. Major ions were mostly derived from the chemical weathering of source rocks, which was supported by the Gibbs plot. Piper plot indicates the seasonal shifting of water types from Ca–Mg to Na–Cl. Isotopic signatures reveal direct atmospheric precipitation and evaporation were the major origins of river water. Fe was the dominant metal concentration in river water irrespective of the seasons (mean concentration 1.05 mg/L). Fe and Zn were the dominant metal concentration observed in all the 3 size fractions of suspended solids. Industrial activities and seawater influx dominate in the downstream, whereas weathering and agricultural inputs are significant in the upstream of the river. Particulate and colloidal fractions are the major contributors for the metal transport in the midstream and downstream of the river. The outcome of this study offer a thorough understanding of the seasonal elemental distribution at different size fractions, geochemical behaviour and the pollution status of the Miri River. With this knowledge, sustainable management strategies can be developed for this crucial water resource to the benefit of Miri community.
