Increasing salinity sequentially induces salt tolerance responses in Szarvasi-1 energy grass

Soil salinity causes severe physiological disorders, decline in biomass, and crop production worldwide becoming more critical with global climate change. Consequently, salt-tolerant varieties received major focus in all sectors of agriculture. Biomass plants such as Szarvasi-1 energy grass (Elymus elongatus subsp. ponticus cv. Szarvasi-1) may play an important role in energy production if they are tolerant to environmental stresses. In this study, Szarvasi-1 energy grass has been investigated to reveal its tolerance to 50–200 mM NaCl in hydroponics. Significant decline in stomatal conductance appeared at 100 mM NaCl treatment but fresh and dry weight and the maximal quantum efficiency of PSII decreased only at 200 mM NaCl. Relative water content and total chlorophyll concentration did not change compared to the control. Leaf water potential was maintained at the control level for one week NaCl exposure, decrease became significant only after two weeks. Malondialdehyde concentration did not refer to oxidative stress. In the element composition of the plants, remarkable increase was found only for Mo whereas Ca, K, S, P, Mn decreased compared to the control. K to Na ratio remained higher than one in the shoot even at 200 mM NaCl. Salt treatment caused temporal and concentration-dependent changes in the expression of genes in the phenylpropanoid pathway, Na transport, photosynthesis, and cellular protection and repair. Szarvasi-1 was found to be fairly tolerant to NaCl which induced a sequential response switching on vacuolar compartmentalization at 50 mM, Na efflux at 100 mM, and cellular protection and repair at 200 mM.

Alleviation of drought stress damages by melatonin and Bacillus thuringiensis associated with adjusting photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidative system, and anatomical structure of Glycine max (L.)

These experiments were performed to study the effect of exogenous treatment with melatonin at 100 μM and seed treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis (106−8 CFU/cm3) on growth, physio-biochemical characters, antioxidant enzymes, and anatomical features of soybean plants cv. Giza 111 under drought conditions. The findings showed that leaves number, nodules number, branches number, relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content, and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) were significantly reduced in soybean under drought stress. In addition, anatomical structure of stems and leaves were negatively affected in stressed plants. Moreover, proline, electrolyte leakage (EL%) lipid peroxidation (MDA), superoxide (O2·-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD), were significantly increased under drought stress. However, application of melatonin or Bacillus caused an improvement in growth characters, such as branches number, and increased chlorophyll a and b content, RWC as well as Fv/Fm in drought stressed soybean plants. Furthermore, melatonin and Bacillus treatments showed a significant decrease in EL%, MDA, O2·- and H2O2, besides regulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes under drought stress. The stems and leaves anatomical structure, such as lamina thickness, lower and upper epidermis thickness, number of xylem vessels/bundle, stem diameter, xylem vessels diameter, and phloem thickness, were improved under drought conditions with melatonin and Bacillus treatments. Therefore, the outcomes of this investigation recommended the use of melatonin as foliar spray and Bacillus thuringiensis as seed treatment, which could regulate a number of stress-responsive mechanisms to protect the stressed soybean plants, improve their growth under drought stress.

Assessing the invasive potential of Hydrocharis dubia (Blume) Backer in U Minh Thuong National Park, Vietnam

Eco-physiological characteristics of Hydrocharis dubia (Blume) Backer in the U Minh Thuong National Park (UMTNP) were surveyed from April 2022 to May 2023 to assess its invasive potential risk. Thirty-six four-square-meter plots (4m x 1m) were established along the canals in the core zone to determine the coverage of H. dubia and other hydrophytes, which were used to calculate the Importance Value Index (IVI%) and Shannon-Wiener index (H’). PSII Maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm), Performance Index (PIabs), and Chlorophyll concentration (Chl) in leaves were measured to assess photosynthetic efficiency. The IVI indices showed that Pistia stratiotes L. and H. dubia were the most and second dominant species in the hydrophytic plant community, respectively. However, the photosynthetic activity of H. dubia was significantly higher than that of P. stratiotes. The Fv/Fm (0.830-0.842) of H. dubia were stable during the study period. The higher value of PIabs in the wet season (2.293 ± 0.191) compared to the dry season (1.402 ± 0.105) indicated that H. dubia’s growth was favored in this period. The eco-physiological characteristics of H. dubia claim its high photosynthetic activity, which can be considered an early warning of the species’ spread in the UMTNP, although it is currently suppressed by P. stratiotes.

Biochemical and physiological time-of-day variations in early-development phase of Agave mapisaga and Agave salmiana.

This research assesses the aboveground matter accumulation and Fv/Fm ratios (maximum quantum efficiency of PSII) in young plants (5months old) of Agave mapisaga and Agave salmiana grown under greenhouse conditions. This study also evaluated changes in the relative abundance of several different metabolites (sugars, free amino acids, and soluble phenols) during the major daily phases (I, III, and IV) of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). These two species were also investigated to determine if differences in these parameters were evident with respect to their geographical origins (i.e. Metepec, Tlajomulco, and Tlaxiaca, in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico). Differences in shoot mass (0.51-0.82g plant-1 ), water content (75-93%), fructose (4-27μmolg-1 ), glucose (57-73μmolg-1 ), sucrose (10-30μmolg-1 ), free amino acids (5-25μmolg-1 ), soluble phenolics (0.7-3.5μmolg-1 ), and Fv/Fm ratios (0.75-0.80) were evident between plants with different origins. Specifically, at the end of Phase I compared to Phase IV, the results showed significant reductions in dry matter (up to 3.3%) and also reductions in fructose/sucrose. Relative amino acid concentrations were lowest in Phase III (8.8μmolg-1 ) compared to Phase I (16μmolg-1 ). These are novel observations, since all these changes and the biochemical and physiological performance in the CAM phases have not been previously determined in Agave plants differing in their geographical origins.

Exogenous brassinosteroids application in purple passion fruit plants grafted onto a sweet calabash passion fruit rootstock and under water stress

The purple passion fruit is a fruit species of great importance in high Andean areas, but it can be affected by water deficit conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the application of brassinosteroids on purple passion fruit grafted on Passiflora maliformis and under water deficit. The plants were subjected to different levels of irrigation (100%, 50% and 25% of the evaporated amount) and some were applied with brassinosteroid analogue (DI-31). The fresh and dry mass of the aerial part and the root, leaf area, height of the aerial part, electrolyte loss, relative chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and maximum PSII quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) were determined. It was observed that water stress negatively affected the height, leaf area, and fresh and dry masses of the plants at 84 days after treatment (dat). On the other hand, the results indicate a positive effect of the brassinosteroids on the height, leaf area, and fresh and dry masses of the plants at the different levels of irrigation at 84 dat. An effect of water stress or the exogenous application of brassinosteroids on electrolyte loss was not detected, but these factors did affect Fv/Fm at 28 dat. These results are important for the formulation of integrated management plans for the cultivation of Passiflora edulis f. edulis Sims in a climate change scenario.

Chemical Composition of Salvia fruticosa Mill. Essential Oil and Its Protective Effects on Both Photosynthetic Damage and Oxidative Stress in Conocephalum conicum L. Induced by Environmental Heavy Metal Concentrations.

The genus Salvia L., belonging to the Lamiaceae family, contains more than 900 species distributed in various parts of the world. It is a genus containing aromatic plants used both in the culinary field and above all in the cosmetic area to produce several perfumes. Salvia fruticosa Mill., notoriously known as Greek Salvia, is a plant used since ancient times in traditional medicine, but today cultivated and used in various parts of Europe and Africa. Polar and apolar extracts of this plant confirmed the presence of several metabolites such as abietane and labdane diterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids, and some flavonoids, causing interesting properties such as sedative, carminative, and antiseptic, while its essential oils (EOs) are mainly characterized by compounds such as 1,8-cineole and camphor. The aim of this work concerns the chemical analysis by GC and GC-MS, and the investigation of the biological properties, of the EO of S. fruticosa plants collected in eastern Sicily. The gas-chromatographic analysis confirmed the presence of 1,8-cineole (17.38%) and camphor (12.81%), but at the same time, also moderate amounts of α-terpineol (6.74%), β-myrcene (9.07%), camphene (8.66%), β-pinene (6.55%), and α-pinene (6.45%). To study the protective effect of EOs from S. fruticosa (both the total mixture and the individual compounds) on possible damage induced by heavy metals, an in vitro system was used in which a model organism, the liverwort Conocephalum conicum, was subjected to the effect of a mix of heavy metals (HM) prepared using values of concentrations actually measured in one of the most polluted watercourses of the Campania region, the Regi Lagni. Finally, the antioxidant response and the photosynthetic damage were examined. The exogenous application of the EO yields a resumption of the oxidative stress induced by HM, as demonstrated by the reduction in the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) content and by the increased activity of antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Furthermore, plants treated with HMs and EO showed a higher Fv/Fm (maximal quantum efficiency of PSII in the dark) with respect to HMs-only treated ones. These results clearly indicate the protective capacity of the EO of S. fruticosa against oxidative stress, which is achieved at least in part by modulating the redox state through the antioxidant pathway and on photosynthetic damage.

Influence of nutrient enrichment on colonisation and photosynthetic parameters of hard substrate marine microphytobenthos

This study aimed to assess the influence of nutrient enrichment on the development of microalgal biofilm on concrete and PVC cubes. Three mesocosms were utilized to create a nutrient gradient over a period of 28 days. Various parameters including biomass, photosynthetic activity, microtopography, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were measured. Imaging PAM techniques were employed to obtain surface-wide data. Results revealed that nutrient availability had no significant impact on Chl a biomass and the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (/). The photosynthetic capacity and efficiency were minimally affected by nutrient availability. Interestingly, the relationship between microphytobenthic (MPB) biomass and photosynthesis and surface rugosity exhibited distinct patterns. Negative reliefs showed a strong correlation with / while no clear pattern emerged for biomass on rough concrete structures. Overall, our findings demonstrate that under conditions of heightened eutrophication, biofilm photosynthesis thrives in the fissures and crevasses of colonized structures regardless of nutrient levels. This investigation provides valuable insights into the interplay between nutrient availability and surface rugosity.

Contribution of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal and Endophytic Fungi to Drought Tolerance in Araucaria araucana Seedlings.

In its natural distribution, Araucaria araucana is a plant species usually exposed to extreme environmental constraints such as wind, volcanism, fires, and low rainfall. This plant is subjected to long periods of drought, accentuated by the current climate emergency, causing plant death, especially in its early growth stages. Understanding the benefits that both arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and endophytic fungi (EF) could provide plants under different water regimes would generate inputs to address the above-mentioned issues. Here, the effect of AMF and EF inoculation (individually and combined) on the morphophysiological variables of A. araucana seedlings subjected to different water regimes was evaluated. Both the AMF and EF inocula were obtained from A. araucana roots growing in natural conditions. The inoculated seedlings were kept for 5 months under standard greenhouse conditions and subsequently subjected to three different irrigation levels for 2 months: 100, 75, and 25% of field capacity (FC). Morphophysiological variables were evaluated over time. Applying AMF and EF + AMF yielded a noticeable survival rate in the most extreme drought conditions (25% FC). Moreover, both the AMF and the EF + AMF treatments promoted an increase in height growth between 6.1 and 16.1%, in the production of aerial biomass between 54.3 and 62.6%, and in root biomass between 42.5 and 65.4%. These treatments also kept the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm 0.71 for AMF and 0.64 for EF + AMF) stable, as well as high foliar water content (>60%) and stable CO2 assimilation under drought stress. In addition, the EF + AMF treatment at 25% FC increased the total chlorophyll content. In conclusion, using indigenous strains of AMF, alone or in combination with EF, is a beneficial strategy to produce A. araucana seedlings with an enhanced ability to tolerate prolonged drought periods, which could be of great relevance for the survival of these native species under the current climate change.

Traits Related to Heat Stress in Phaseolus Species

Traits related to heat stress in bean species (Phaseolus spp.) have been insufficiently explored to date, yet studies of these traits are needed given that heat stress is predicted to become more frequent and severe in many parts of the world because of climate change. In order to detect agro-morphological and physiological traits related to heat stress and selection for resistance to heat stress, a total of 196 bean genotypes including eight genotypes of tepary bean (P. acutifolius L.), five genotypes of scarlet runner bean (P. coccineus A. Gray), two genotypes of year bean (P. dumosus Macfady), five genotypes of lima bean (P. lunatus L.), and 176 genotypes of common bean (P. vulgaris L.) were evaluated in 2019 and 2020 under moderate (field) and extreme heat stress (greenhouse) conditions. Although most genotypes of P. acutifolius, P. lunatus, and P. coccineus were found to be more resistant to heat stress than most genotypes of common bean, some genotypes of common bean were shown to perform as well as P. acutifolius, P. lunatus, and P. coccineus. Biomass among agronomical traits had the highest significant direct effects on the resistance to heat stress score. The maximum quantum efficiency of PSII and SPAD values among physiological traits showed significant direct effects on the resistance to heat stress score. Biomass, leaflet size, the SPAD value and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII can be considered as heat stress-related traits, and, P. acutifolius, P. lunatus, P. coccineus, and some genotypes of P. vulgaris can be considered for exploitation in a heat stress tolerance breeding program.

Separate or combined effects of soil compaction and/or drought on gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and physiological traits of maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids

AbstractIn the natural environment, plants are subjected to simultaneous or sequential presence of various abiotic and/or biotic stresses, including soil compaction and soil drought. The effects of these stresses tested separately are relatively well understood, but still little is known about their simultaneous effects on plants. Our research involved four single hybrids of maize differing in their degree of susceptibility to soil compaction and drought. We investigated the effects of low and high soil compaction under optimal irrigation (LI, HI) and under three‐week long soil drought (LD, HD), on the gas exchange (Pn, E, gS, Ci) and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (F0, Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm), total leaf area (LA), leaf greening (SPAD), leaf water deficit (WD), leaf water potential (ψ) and membrane injury (MI). The plants experiencing high soil compaction (HI) showed a decrease in all parameters of gas exchange (Pn, E, gS, Ci), leaf area (LA), leaf greening (SPAD) and the maximal quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) in comparison with plants growing in non‐compacted soil (LI). An increase was observed in the other fluorescence parameters, i.e., F0, Fm and Fv and leaf WD, ψ and MI in HI vs. LI variants. In the plants exposed to drought (LD, HD), the changes in the measured traits were greater, especially for the sensitive hybrids P‐8400 and NS‐3023, than for the plants from LI treatment. A significant interaction between the degree of stress susceptibility and relative trait change was observed for practically all of the measured features. Moreover, in the short recovery period after the end of drought, the measured traits in LD and HD plants did not fully return to the control level, especially in the case of the sensitive hybrids (P‐8400 NS‐3023). The physiological reaction of maize hybrids to soil compaction and/or soil drought indicated the genetically determined variability of tolerance to those stresses. Significant correlation between RTC and stress susceptibility indexes (S‐SI) provided suitable criteria for the hybrid selection. Also, our results showed the plasticity and capability of maize hybrids to respond to environmental conditions.

Different photoprotective strategies for white leaves between two co-occurring Actinidia species.

At the outer canopy, the white leaves of Actinidia kolomikta can turn pink but they stay white in A. polygama. We hypothesized that the different leaf colors in the two Actinidia species may represent different photoprotection strategies. To test the hypothesis, leaf optical spectra, anatomy, chlorophyll a fluorescence, superoxide (O2 ˙- ) concentration, photosystem II photo-susceptibility, and expression of anthocyanin-related genes were investigated. On the adaxial side, light reflectance was the highest for white leaves of A. kolomikta, followed by its pink leaves and white leaves of A. polygama, and the absorptance for white leaves of A. kolomikta was the lowest. Chlorophyll and carotenoid content of white and pink leaves in A. kolomikta were significantly lower than those of A. polygama, while the relative anthocyanin content of pink leaves was the highest. Chloroplasts of palisade cells of white leaves in A. kolomikta were not well developed with a lower maximum quantum efficiency of PSII than the other types of leaves (pink leaves of A. kolomikta and white leaves of A. Polygama at the inner/outer canopy). After high light treatment from the abaxial surface, Fv /Fm decreased to a larger extent for white leaves of A. kolomikta than pink leaf and white leaves of A. polygama, and its non-photochemical quenching was also the lowest. White leaves of A. kolomikta showed higher O2 ˙- concentration compared to pink leaves under the same strong irradiance. The expression levels of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes in pink leaves were higher than in white leaves. These results indicate that white leaves of A. kolomikta apply a reflection strategy for photoprotection, while pink leaves resist photoinhibition via anthocyanin accumulation.

Micro- and nano-plastics in hydroponic environment are critical for plants: A meta-analysis

The presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment is ubiquitous, and as such, the toxicity of these plastics, exposure scenarios, and mechanisms of plant response is to be determined. Hereby, a meta-analysis is performed to investigate the effects of MPs and/or NPs on different plant species under hydroponics and soil conditions to assess the current scenario. We examined the response level of root system, photosynthetic parameters, and antioxidant system of plants against MPs/NPs. Root response level in soil condition against various concentrations and types of MPs was higher than in hydroponics however, this response was opposite for the types of MPs. Photosynthetic parameters, including chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids, total chlorophyll, and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII were higher in soil conditions than in hydroponics. Antioxidant parameters, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 contents were higher in hydroponics plants, while, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) showed a mix trend of response level. In addition, proline content was significantly higher in soil and ascorbic acid (ASA) in hydroponic cultured plants under different types, sizes, and concentrations of MPs. These three systems i.e., root, photosynthesis, and antioxidant parameters were also compared between different species, however, the results are generally consistent with the above mentions one. Overall, these analyses suggest that plants grown in hydroponics are more sensitive to the plastic pollution than in the soil environment.

Copper accumulation in the aquatic fern Salvinia minima causes more severe physiological stress than zinc

Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) have a high demand in the industry. However, these ions, at high concentrations, can cause severe damage to both fauna and flora. Phytoremediation has gained international importance because its relatively low cost and it is environmentally friendly. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the capacity of Salvinia minima of accumulating Cu and Zn from aqueous solutions of various external concentrations (20, 40 and 80µmol L-1 of CuSO4 and ZnSO4, separately). In addition, to estimate the effect of exposure of S. minima plants to those metals, on various physiological parameters (growth potential, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII, electrolyte leakage: as a cell membrane integrity index). S. minima was able of accumulating more Zn than Cu in its tissues, reaching values of 6.96mg Cu g-1 dry weight (DW) and 19.6mg Zn g-1 DW when exposed to 80μM of each metal during 96h, that were stored mainly at roots. Despite accumulating less Cu in its tissues, Cu had more severe reductions in various physiological parameters than Zn (in maximum quantum efficiency, integrity of cell membranes, and growth). We conclude that this species can be useful in the phytoremediation for copper and zinc in relatively short time, as maximum accumulation occurred within the first 24h. However, in the long term, the accumulation of such metals is accompanied by a negative impact in the appearance, physiology, and growth of this plant species, which was more severe for copper exposure than for zinc.

Root-Zone Heat Priming Effects on Maximum Quantum Efficiency of PSII, Productivity, Root Morphology and Nutritional Quality of Two Aeroponically Grown Leafy Greens in a Tropical Greenhouse.

This study investigated the effects of root zone (RZ) heat priming on Eruca sativa (cv. Arugula) and Lactuca sativa (cv. Canasta) in a tropical greenhouse by exposing them to three different RZ temperatures (RZTs). For the first group, plants were grown at 25 °C-RZT for 36 days. The second group of plants was grown at 25 °C-RZT for 10 days before transferring to 38 °C-RZT for 10 days and then to 42 °C-RZT for another 16 days (primed). For the third group, plants were grown at 25 °C-RZT for 20 days and for the last 16 days were transferred to 42 °C-RZT (non-primed). RZ heat priming did not affect the leaf expansion of Arugula while the leaf expansion was slower in RZ heat primed Canasta compared to 25 °C-RZT plants. After transferring to 42 °C-RZT in the later stage, RZ heat primed Arugula had similar productivity but a larger root system with higher nutritional quality at harvest and during postharvest storage compared to those of 25 °C-RZT plants. After subjection to 42 °C-RZT, although RZ heat priming enhanced its nutritional quality, the productivity of Canasta was compromised. The results of this study suggest that it is feasible to enhance productivity and nutritional quality of leafy greens at lower production cost through RZT management.

Diurnal photosynthetic performance of two oak species from two provenances in a Mediterranean and a central European common garden

Oaks may contribute to the stabilization of European forests under climate change. We utilized two common gardens established in contrasting growth regimes, in Greece (Olympiada) and Germany (Schwanheim), to compare the diurnal photosynthetic performance of a Greek and an Italian provenance of two Mediterranean oaks (Quercus pubescens and Q. frainetto) during the 2019 growing season. Although the higher radiation in the southern common garden led to a strong midday depression of chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters (maximum quantum efficiency of PSII, performance index on absorption basis), comparable light-saturated net photosynthetic rates were achieved in both study areas. Moreover, both species and provenances exhibited analogous responses. Q. pubescens had enhanced chlorophyll a fluorescence traits but similar photosynthetic rates compared to Q. frainetto, whereas the provenances did not differ. These findings indicate the high photosynthetic efficiency of both oaks under the current climate in Central Europe and their suitability for assisted migration schemes.

Plant growth promoting bacteria improve growth and phytostabilization potential of Zea mays under chromium and drought stress by altering photosynthetic and antioxidant responses

Drought in heavy metal polluted arid and semiarid regions severely inhibits the plant growth and phytoremediation potential by affecting photosynthesis, antioxidant defense mechanism, and other biochemical processes. In the present study, we explored the role of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) on Zea mays growth and phytoremediation efficiency in Chromium (Cr) contaminated soils under drought stress by assessing plant stress tolerance, photosynthetic gas exchange activities, chlorophyll fluorescence, and Cr accumulation. Two efficient Cr and drought resistant PGPB with the potential to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and produce plant growth-promoting metabolites even under Cr, drought, or Cr+drought stress conditions were isolated and identified as Providencia sp. (TCR05) and Proteus mirabilis (TCR20). In pot experiments, the inoculation of TCR05 and TCR20 increased the plant growth, pigments, protein, phenolics, and relative water content and decreased the lipid peroxidation, proline, and superoxide dismutase activity under Cr, drought, or Cr+drought conditions. Irrespective of stress treatment, TCR05 and TCR20 also improved plant photosynthetic efficiency by increasing the CO 2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance to water vapor, transpiration rate, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII, actual quantum efficiency of PSII, electron transport rate, photochemical quenching, reducing the internal CO 2 concentration and non-photochemical quenching. Besides, the PGPB decreased the translocation of Cr through immobilization of Cr in root. These results denoted that strains TCR05 and TCR20 could be a capable bio-inoculant for improving plant growth and phytostabilization practices in Cr contaminated sites even under water-limited conditions. • Potential Cr(VI) reducing MST-PGPB strains TCR05 and TCR20 were isolated. • MST-PGPB enhanced stress tolerance of Z. mays under combined stress conditions. • PGPB inoculation improved the PSII performance of Z. mays under combined stresses. • PGPB inoculation improved Cr phytostabilization under combined stress conditions.

This study aimed to identify correlations between the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Qy) with climatic and soil variables associated with bunch weight. The experimental design used in the field corresponds to an observational and longitudinal study, where 72 production units in the independent vegetative stage were randomly selected, of which 36 units from a low production area and 36 from a high production area. In each unit, the quantum yield (Qy: Fv/Fm) was measured and correlated with climatic and soil variables, the nutrient content in the leaves, and the average weight of the cluster in each sampled batches. The results indicated a correlation between Qy of -0.703 concerning temperature and -0.583 with radiation. On the other hand, pH and resistance to soil penetration are directly related to Qy to a lesser extent, with r2 values of 12.77 and 24.28%, respectively. Precipitation, wind, gusts, dew point, atmospheric pressure, and texture composition of the soil do not significantly affect Qy variation; when attacks of leaf pests (mites) occur, significant reductions are also observed in this. Qy is a variable that responds to the stress generated by factors external to the plant, these can significantly affect production, and which is reduced by up to two kg per cluster, with a bias of three to four weeks, when the loss of 0.04 points in the value of Qy occurs.

Allelopathic effect of macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus (Ochrophyta) and Coccotylus brodiei (Rhodophyta) on the growth and photosynthesis performance of Baltic cyanobacteria

In aquatic ecosystems, allelopathic activity depends on the production and secretion of allelopathic compounds and their effective dispersal in the environment. In addition, macroalgae have been found to produce active metabolites that affect other organisms that compete with them for nutrients. However, the allelopathic activity of Baltic red and brown macroalgae on filamentous cyanobacteria is still insufficiently understood. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to demonstrate and compare the allelopathic effects of macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus L. and Coccotylus brodiei (Turner) Kütz. on the growth and photosynthetic activity of two Baltic cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. and Nostoc sp. It was found a stimulating effect of different concentrations (5, 25, and 50 µL mL–1) of the aqueous extract obtained from C. brodiei on the number of cells of Nostoc sp. which constituted 108%, 140%, and 147%, respectively, relative to the control treatment.
 On the other hand, extracts obtained from F. vesiculosus had no statistically significant effect on the number of cells of the cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. and Nostoc sp. Moreover, the C. brodiei extracts had no significant impact on the growth of Aphanizomenon sp. Furthermore, Baltic macroalgae F. vesiculosus and C. brodiei was able to exert allelopathic effects on photosynthesis performance of Nostoc sp. and Aphanizomenon sp. and compounds produced by them had inhibitory, stimulatory, or no significant effect on the maximum PSII quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII). The results obtained in this work constitute an important contribution to the knowledge on the allelopathic activity of Baltic red and brown algae on certain bloom-forming species of filamentous cyanobacteria.

Arabidopsis fibrillin 1-2 subfamily members exert their functions via specific protein-protein interactions.

Fibrillins (FBNs) are plastidial proteins found in photosynthetic organisms from cyanobacteria to higher plants. The function of most FBNs remains unknown. Here, we focused on members of the FBN subgroup comprising FBN1a, FBN1b, and FBN2. We show that these three polypeptides interact between each other, potentially forming a network around the plastoglobule surface. Both FBN2 and FBN1s interact with allene oxide synthase, and the elimination of any of these FBNs results in a delay in jasmonate-mediated anthocyanin accumulation in response to a combination of moderate high light and low temperature. Mutations in the genes encoding FBN1s or FBN2 also affect the protection of PSII under the combination of these stresses. Fully developed leaves of these mutants have lower maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and higher oxidative stress than wild-type plants. These effects are additive, and the fbn1a-1b-2 triple mutant shows a stronger decrease in Fv/Fm and a greater increase in oxidative stress than fbn1a-1b or fbn2 mutants. Co-immunoprecipitation analysis indicated that FBN2 also interacts with other proteins involved in different metabolic processes. We propose that these fibrillins facilitate accurate positioning of different proteins involved in distinct metabolic processes, and that their elimination leads to dysfunction of those proteins.

Changes in Growth, Photosynthesis Performance, Pigments, and Toxin Contents of Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria after Exposure to Macroalgal Allelochemicals.

Macroalgae can directly restrict the growth of various phytoplankton species by releasing allelopathic compounds; therefore, considerable attention should be paid to the allelopathic potential of these organisms against harmful and bloom-forming cyanobacteria. The main aim of this study was to demonstrate for the first time the allelopathic activity of Ulva intestinalis on the growth, the fluorescence parameters: the maximum PSII quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), the chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoid (Car) content, and the microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and phenol content of three bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Aphanizomenon sp., Nodularia spumigena, and Nostoc sp. We found both negative and positive allelopathic effects of U. intestinalis on tested cyanobacteria. The study clearly showed that the addition of the filtrate of U. intestinalis significantly inhibited growth, decreased pigment content and Fv/Fm and ΦPSII values of N. spumigena and Nostoc sp., and stimulated Aphanizomenon sp. The addition of different concentrations of aqueous extract also stimulated the cyanobacterial growth. It was also shown that the addition of extract obtained from U. intestinalis caused a significant decrease in the MC-LR content in Nostoc sp. cells. Moreover, it the phenol content in N. spumigena cells was increased. On the other hand, the cell-specific phenol content for Aphanizomenon sp. decreased due to the addition of the filtrate. In this work, we demonstrated that the allelopathic effect of U. intestinalis depends on the target species’ identity as well as the type of allelopathic method used. The study of the allelopathic Baltic macroalgae may help to identify their possible role as a significant biological factor influencing harmful cyanobacterial blooms in brackish ecosystems.
