Manual material handling can improve occupational diseases such as low back pain and musculoskeletal disorders. In an attempt to reduce the risk of injury as a result of such work, NIOSH published the recommended weight limit (RWL) equation. The RWL formulation was made with Europeans and Americans, so this research was conducted to see the suitability of the RWL formulation for Asians, especially Indonesians. The participants of this study were 30 Indonesian women students. The independent variable in this research is the asymmetry multiplier. The participants perform asymmetric lifting in 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees with the frequency of 1 lift/min in a 30-minute duration. Other multiplier factors such as the vertical multiplier, distance multiplier, and coupling multiplier are made to have a value of 1. The weight of the load lifted by the respondent is adjusted to the maximum load that each respondent can lift comfortably, which is usually called the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL). The heart rate data used for analysis is the heart rate in the last five minutes. In addition, respondents also filled out the Borg RPE scale. The results of this study were that the heart rate increased from an average resting heart rate of 83.12 beats/minute to 90.6 beats/minute. The statistical test results showed that there was no significant effect between asymmetry lifting tasks on heart rate, energy expenditure, and the Borg's Scale RPE (α = 0,05). Energy expenditure in this study is still below the threshold set by NIOSH. From this study, the predicted AM equation of physiological for Indonesian (energy expenditure) is AM = 1 - (0,0024A) and the predicted AM equation of RPE is AM = 1 - (0,0029A).

Effects of Lifting Method, Safety Shoe Type, and Lifting Frequency on Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift, Physiological Responses, and Safety Shoes Discomfort Rating.

This study aimed to investigate the physical effects of precision lifting tasks on the maximal acceptable weight of a lift (i.e., psychophysiological lifting capacity where the workers adjust the lifting weight in order to work without any fatigue or strain at the end of the work while wearing common safety shoe types). Additionally, the physical difference between the precise and non-precise lifting conditions associated with wearing safety shoes were assessed by respiration responses and shoe discomfort ratings. To achieve the objective of the study, ten healthy male workers were selected by age (between 25 to 35 years old). Their anthropometric characteristics, including knuckle height, knee height, and body mass index (BMI), were measured. A three-way repeated measures design with three independent variables was used; the variables included—the (1) lifting method (precise and non-precise), (2) lifting frequency (1 and 4 lifts per min), and (3) safety shoe type (light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty). The physiological response variables and one of the subjective factors of this study were—(1) respiration responses, and (2) shoe discomfort rating, respectively. The data were analyzed using the Mauchly’s test of sphericity, Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the use of heavy-duty safety shoes typically increased the shoe discomfort rating under precise lifting methods. Additionally, the lifting frequency was determined to be one of the main factors affecting respiratory responses and shoe discomfort rating. This study also found that respiration responses rose on four lifts per min as compared to 1 lift per min, regardless of the lifting method type. This study indicated that the replacement of some types of ordinary safety shoes used in some workplaces with those selected appropriately might significantly reduce the rating effort required to lift objects or tools. However, the benefits should be carefully evaluated before replacing the safety shoes.

Using Electroencephalography (EEG) Power Responses to Investigate the Effects of Ambient Oxygen Content, Safety Shoe Type, and Lifting Frequency on the Worker's Activities.

Objective The study assesses the changes in electroencephalography (EEG) power spectral density of individuals in hypoxia when wearing a different type of safety shoes under different lifting frequencies. It also assesses the EEG response behavior induced via the process of lifting loads related to these variables. Methods The study was conducted in two consecutive phases: training and acclimatization phase and experimental lifting phase. Ten male college students participated in this study. A four-way repeated measures design was used in this research with independent variables: ambient oxygen content (“15%, 18%, and 20%”), safety shoes type (“light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty”), lifting frequency (“1 and 4 lifts/min”), and replication (“first and second”). And the dependent variables were alpha, theta, beta, gamma, θ/α, θ/β, α/β, β/α, (θ + α)/β, and (θ + α)/(α + β). The participant was allowed to determine his maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) in fifteen minutes of lifting using psychophysically technique. Then, he continued lifting the MAWL for another five minutes, where all the data were collected. Results Results showed that the EEG responses at lower levels of the independent variables were significantly high than at higher levels; except for oxygen content, the EEG responses at lower levels were considerably lower than at a higher level. It also showed that an upsurge in the physical demand increased lifting frequency and replication and caused decreasing in alpha power, theta/beta, alpha/beta, (theta + alpha)/beta, (theta + alpha)/(alpha + beta) and increasing in the theta power and the gamma power. Furthermore, several interactions among independent variables had significant effects on the EEG responses. Conclusion The EEG implementation for the investigation of neural responses to physical demands allows for the possibility of newer nontraditional and faster methods of human performance monitoring. These methods provide effective and reliable results as compared to other traditional methods. This study will safeguard the physical capabilities and possible health risks of industrial workers. And the applications of these tasks can occur in almost all working environments (factories, warehouses, airports, building sites, farms, hospitals, offices, etc.) that are at high altitudes. It can include lifting boxes at a packaging line, handling construction materials, handling patients in hospitals, and cleaning.

Influence of age on lifting capacity among manual materials handlers.

Recommended weight limit for manual materials handlers has to be decided based on the individual characteristics of the person and age is one of the major variable affecting maximal lifting capacity. But there is limited information on pattern of change in lifting capacity with age. To determine the influence of age on the maximum acceptable weight of lift among manual materials handlers. Two hundred and seventeen male construction workers were grouped into four age quotas- 19-28, 29-38, 39-48 and 49-58 years. Lifting capacity was determined using progressive isoinertial lifting evaluation, adopting semi-squat technique of lifting at two levels: waist and shoulder. A statistically significant increase in the maximum acceptable weight was observed from first to second age group followed by a gradual decline. The percentage of decline from second to third age group was 11.89% and 14.34% and from third to fourth age group was 5.60% and 19.90% for waist and shoulder level respectively. Pattern of change in lifting capacity with age among manual materials handlers has been investigated in this study. Lifting capacity was found to be the greatest in 29-38 year age group, therefore prescribing recommended weight limit uniformly for all the workers may not be the best practice.

Determining Changes in Electromyography Indices when Measuring Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift in Iranian Male Students

In spite of the increasing degree of automation in industry, manual material handling (MMH) is still performed in many occupational settings. The aim of the current study was to determine the maximum acceptable weight of lift using psychophysical and electromyography indices. This experimental study was conducted among 15 male students recruited from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Each participant performed 18 different lifting tasks which involved three lifting frequencies, three lifting heights and two box sizes. Each set of experiments was conducted during the 20 min work period using free-style lifting technique and subjective as well as objective assessment methodologies. SPSS version 18 software was used for descriptive and analytical analyses by Friedman, Wilcoxon and Spearman correlation techniques. The results demonstrated that muscle activity increased with increasing frequency, height of lift and box size (P<0.05). Meanwhile, MAWLs obtained in this study are lower than those in Snook table (P<0.05). In this study, the level of muscle activity in percent MVC in relation to the erector spine muscles in L3 and T9 regions as well as left and right abdominal external oblique muscles were at 38.89%, 27.78%, 11.11% and 5.55% in terms of muscle activity is more than 70% MVC, respectively. The results of Wilcoxon test revealed that for both small and large boxes under all conditions, significant differences were detected between the beginning and end of the test values for MPF of erector spine in L3 and T9 regions, and left and right abdominal external oblique muscles (P<0.05). The results of Spearman correlation test showed that there was a significant relation between the MAWL, RMS and MPF of the muscles in all test conditions (P<0.05). Based on the results of this study, it was concluded if muscle activity is more than 70% of MVC, the values of Snook tables should be revisited. Furthermore, the biomechanical perspective should receive special attention in determining the standards for MMH.

Older females in the workforce – the effects of age on psychophysical estimates of maximum acceptable lifting loads

The number of older workers in the workforce is increasing substantially, and advanced age is associated with factors that could influence musculoskeletal injury risk and work capacity. This study’s goals were to test whether psychophysical estimates of maximum acceptable weight of lift (liftmax) differed between younger and older workers, and to examine potential explanatory factors. Twenty-four female workers (half 50 + years; half 20–32 years) self-adjusted a box’s mass to their perceived liftmax during four lifting tasks. Older workers’ liftmax values were significantly lower (by approximately 24%) than their younger counterparts. There were no age-related differences in resting heart rate, or peak joint angles and final heart rate during the lifting trials. However, the older group demonstrated lower grip strength (by 24%), and lower heart rate reserve during the trials (by 18%). These results question whether current maximum acceptable lifting weights based on psychophysical information are appropriately protective for female workers greater than 50 years of age.Practitioner Summary: This psychophysical study demonstrated that older female workers (aged 50–63 years) selected maximum acceptable lift masses that were (on average) 24% lower than younger workers (aged 20–32 years), which corresponded with lower grip strength and heart rate reserve. Current maximum acceptable lifting weights based on psychophysical information may not protect female workers greater than 50 years of age.

Obesity-related changes in prolonged repetitive lifting performance

Despite the rising prevalence of obesity, little is known about its moderating effects on injury risk factors, such as fatigue, in occupational settings. This study investigated the effect of obesity, prolonged repetitive lifting and their interaction on lifting performance of 14 participants, 7 obese (mean body mass index (BMI): 33.2 kg m−2) and 7 non-obese (mean BMI: 22.2 kg m−2) subjects. To present a physically challenging task, subjects performed repetitive lifting for 1 h at 120% of their maximum acceptable weight of lift. Generalized linear mixed models were fit to posture and acceleration data. The obese group bent to a ∼10° lower peak trunk sagittal flexion angle, had 17% lower root mean square (RMS) jerk and took 0.8 s longer per lift. Over time, the obese group increased their trunk transverse and sagittal posterior accelerations while the non-obese maintained theirs. Although the majority of lifting variables were unaffected by BMI or its interaction with prolonged lifting duration, the observed differences, combined with a greater upper body mass, necessitate a more cautious use of existing psychophysical lifting limits for individuals who are obese, particularly when fatigued.

Psychophysically determining the maximum acceptable weight of lift for polypropylene laminated bags.

The objective of this study was to psychophysically determine the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) for polypropylene (PP) laminated bags. Twelve men were requested to decide their MAWLs under various task combinations involving 3 lifting ranges, 3 lifting frequencies, and 2 hand conditions. The results revealed that the MAWL was significantly affected by the frequency and range variables (all p<.001), whereas the hand condition did not influence the MAWL. The participants exhibited relatively low MAWL values compared with subjects in previous studies, especially in infrequent lifts. The results of multiple stepwise regression revealed that certain anthropometric data (e.g., chest circumference, wrist circumference, and acromial height) accounted for the percentage of variance for the determined MAWLs, ranging from 56.2% to 83.4%. These data can be obtained simply and quickly, and are considered the superior predictors for MAWL determination when handling PP laminated bags.

Effects of box size, frequency of lifting, and height of lift on maximum acceptable weight of lift and heart rate for male university students in Iran.

IntroductionIn spite of the widespread use of automation in industry, manual material handling (MMH) is still performed in many occupational settings. The emphasis on ergonomics in MMH tasks is due to the potential risks of workplace accidents and injuries. This study aimed to assess the effect of box size, frequency of lift, and height of lift on maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) on the heart rates of male university students in Iran.MethodsThis experimental study was conducted in 2015 with 15 male students recruited from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Each participant performed 18 different lifting tasks that involved three lifting frequencies (1lift/min, 4.3 lifts/min and 6.67 lifts/min), three lifting heights (floor to knuckle, knuckle to shoulder, and shoulder to arm reach), and two box sizes. Each set of experiments was conducted during the 20 min work period using the free-style lifting technique. The working heart rates (WHR) were recorded for the entire duration. In this study, we used SPSS version 18 software and descriptive statistical methods, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the t-test for data analysis.ResultsThe results of the ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference between the mean of MAWL in terms of frequencies of lifts (p = 0.02). Tukey’s post hoc test indicated that there was a significant difference between the frequencies of 1 lift/minute and 6.67 lifts/minute (p = 0. 01). There was a significant difference between the mean heart rates in terms of frequencies of lifts (p = 0.006), and Tukey’s post hoc test indicated a significant difference between the frequencies of 1 lift/minute and 6.67 lifts/minute (p = 0.004). But, there was no significant difference between the mean of MAWL and the mean heart rate in terms of lifting heights (p > 0.05). The results of the t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the mean of MAWL and the mean heart rate in terms of the sizes of the two boxes (p = 0.000).ConclusionBased on the results of this study, it was concluded that MAWL and heart rate are influenced by the variables of lifting frequency and the size of the boxes.

Effect of safety shoes type, lifting frequency, and ambient temperature on subject's MAWL and physiological responses

ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the lifting capabilities of individuals while wearing safety shoes in a hot environment and to investigate the behavior of the physiological responses induced by the lifting process associated with those variables. MethodsIn order to achieve the objectives of this research, two sequential studies were conducted. The first part was an acclimatization and training program followed by a psychophysical experiment. Seven male workers participated in this experiment from the university. A three-way repeated measures design, with three independent variables and seven response variables, was utilized in this study. The independent variables studied in the psychophysical experiment were: 1) environmental temperature (20 and 30 °C WBGT), 2) lifting frequency (1 and 5 lifts/min), and 3) safety shoes (light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty). The response variables for this experiment were: 1) maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), 2) heart rate, 3) aural-canal temperature, 4) muscle electromyography (EMG) of four muscle groups (biceps brachii, anterior deltoid, trapezius, and erector spinae), 5) rating of perceived exertion, 6) rating of thermal sensation and7) safety shoes discomfort rating. ResultsThe psychophysical experiment results showed that the weights selected by participants at higher levels of the independent variables were significantly less than those selected at lower levels of the independent variables. Some of the interaction effects were also significant. ConclusionThis study found evidence that – in addition to lifting frequency, which is well reported in the literature – heat stress increases the workload intensity in manual lifting tasks influencing the psychophysical selection of MAWL and the physiological responses of the human body represented in aural-canal temperature, heart rate and muscular activities. The study findings demonstrated the necessity of accounting for work environmental temperature and type of worn safety shoes, which is a safety requirement by most employers, when calculating the recommended weight limits. Practitioner summaryMost of the manual materials handling studies had investigated worker's capacity to perform lifting tasks in different environmental conditions not considering the effect of wearing safety shoes. This research fills the gap by presenting safety guidelines regarding lifting tasks in a hot environment while wearing safety shoes.

Maximal and sub-maximal functional lifting performance at different platform heights

Introducing valid physical employment tests requires identifying and developing a small number of practical tests that provide broad coverage of physical performance across the full range of job tasks. This study investigated discrete lifting performance across various platform heights reflective of common military lifting tasks. Sixteen Australian Army personnel performed a discrete lifting assessment to maximal lifting capacity (MLC) and maximal acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) at four platform heights between 1.30 and 1.70 m. There were strong correlations between platform height and normalised lifting performance for MLC (R2 = 0.76 ± 0.18, p < 0.05) and MAWL (R2 = 0.73 ± 0.21, p < 0.05). The developed relationship allowed prediction of lifting capacity at one platform height based on lifting capacity at any of the three other heights, with a standard error of < 4.5 kg and < 2.0 kg for MLC and MAWL, respectively.

Effect of Background Music on Maximum Acceptable Weight of Manual Lifting Tasks

This study used the psychophysical approach to investigate the impact of tempo and volume of background music on the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of participants engaged in lifting. Ten male college students participated in this study. They lifted a box from the floor, walked 1–2 steps as required, placed the box on a table and walked back twice per minute. The results showed that the tempo of music had a significant effect on both MAWL and HR. Fast tempo background music resulted in higher MAWL and HR values than those resulting from slow tempo music. The effects of both the tempo and volume on the RPE were insignificant. The results of this study suggest fast tempo background music may be used in manual materials handling tasks to increase performance without increasing perceived exertion because of its ergogenic effect on human psychology and physiology.

Prediction of the maximum acceptable weight of lift from the frequency of lift

It is known that maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) decreases as the frequency of lifting increases. The purpose of this study was to quantify the relationship between lifting frequency and the MAWL, and to generate models for predicting the mean MAWLs for males and females from frequency of lifting. Published experimental studies that have reported the MAWL at different lifting frequencies were identified and regression methods were used to evaluate the relationship between the frequency of lifting and the MAWL. The best fitting models were logarithmic but they accounted for less than 50% of the variance. This reflects the heterogeneity of the experiments included. Normalising the MAWL to the MAWL at one lift per minute improved the predictive power of the models, accounting for more than 80% of the variance. Linear and power models for predicting work rate in kg/min showed even higher levels of accuracy. Relevance to industryThe paper presents simple mathematical models that can be used to predict the MAWL or the rate of handling weight at a specific frequency. Therefore, they can be used as job design or evaluation tools.

Maximum acceptable weight of lift reflects peak lumbosacral extension moments in a functional capacity evaluation test using free style, stoop and squat lifting

It is unclear whether the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), a common psychophysical method, reflects joint kinetics when different lifting techniques are employed. In a within-participants study (n = 12), participants performed three lifting techniques – free style, stoop and squat lifting from knee to waist level – using the same dynamic functional capacity evaluation lifting test to assess MAWL and to calculate low back and knee kinetics. We assessed which knee and back kinetic parameters increased with the load mass lifted, and whether the magnitudes of the kinetic parameters were consistent across techniques when lifting MAWL. MAWL was significantly different between techniques (p = 0.03). The peak lumbosacral extension moment met both criteria: it had the highest association with the load masses lifted (r > 0.9) and was most consistent between the three techniques when lifting MAWL (ICC = 0.87). In conclusion, MAWL reflects the lumbosacral extension moment across free style, stoop and squat lifting in healthy young males, but the relation between the load mass lifted and lumbosacral extension moment is different between techniques. Practitioner Summary: Tests of maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) from knee to waist height are used to assess work capacity of individuals with low-back disorders. This article shows that the MAWL reflects the lumbosacral extension moment across free style, stoop and squat lifting in healthy young males, but the relation between the load mass lifted and lumbosacral extension moment is different between techniques. This suggests that standardisation of lifting technique used in tests of the MAWL would be indicated if the aim is to assess the capacity of the low back.

Gender differences in psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces for industrial workers observed after twenty years

In the year 1991, manual materials handling guidelines were published by Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. In these guidelines, maximum acceptable weights (MAWs) and forces (MAFs) for lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying were derived from studies conducted in a 20 year span before the above publication date. The question is whether the present generation of workers has retained the same gender differences and absolute values in psychophysically determined MAWs and MAFs as those reflected in the guideline. Twenty-four female industrial workers performed 20 variations of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying. A psychophysical methodology was used whereby the workers chose a workload they could sustain for 8 h without "straining themselves or without becoming unusually tired, weakened, overheated or out of breath." In females, MAWs of lifting, lowering, and carrying averaged 53% of the present-day male values, similar to the 55% in the guideline. MAFs of pushing and pulling were 83 and 86% of the present-day male values but slightly higher than the 73 and 78% in the guideline, respectively for initial and sustained forces. The similarity of gender differences between the guideline and the present findings was coupled with dramatic decreases in MAWs of lifting, lowering, and carrying. Such decreases may reflect a new psychophysical set point; however, considerations about adjusting existing guidelines on lifting, lowering, and carrying may not be appropriate until additional data from other sources inside and outside the US confirm the present findings.

A psychophysical evaluation of NIOSH Lifting Equation in a Chinese young male population: a pilot study

To determine the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL) in a Chinese young male population, and examine whether the revised weight limit recommended by the US. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health can be used for Chinese workers. Eleven young male college students participated in the experiment. The psychophysical approach was used to determine the MAWL with the different frequencies of lift, the heart rate and the self-evaluation. The weight was lifted from the floor to the work-table (760 mm). The results were compared with the recommended weight limit (RWL) and the MAWL by Snook. The MAWL of young male was 34.1 kg while the MAWL with frequency of 1, 4 and 8/min was 17.4, 14.7 and 12.2 kg respectively. The overall MAWL were lower than RWL of NIOSH and the results of Snook. The NIOSH 1991 equation such as load constant and frequency multiple should be revised when the NIOSH limits is used in Chinese population.

Obesity does not reduce maximum acceptable weights of lift

The maximum acceptable weights of lift (MAWL) of obese and non-obese participants were empirically investigated. Three obesity levels were considered: non-obese (18.5 kg/m 2⩽body mass index (BMI)⩽24.9 kg/m 2), moderately obese (35 kg/m 2⩽BMI⩽39.9 kg/m 2) and extremely obese (BMI⩾ 40 kg/m 2). Ten male and 10 female participants were recruited for each obesity level. The participants determined their MAWL for 18 different lifting task conditions (six lifting frequencies×three lifting heights). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the effects of obesity level, gender, lifting height, lifting frequency and their interactions on MAWL. Overall, the ANOVA results indicated that obesity does not reduce MAWL, and thus, suggested that the existing MAWL data can be used to accommodate both general and obese workers. However, further studies based on the biomechanical and physiological approaches are required to provide more complete understanding of obesity effects on lifting tolerance limits.

Secular changes in psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces over 20 years for male industrial workers

The most frequent and expensive cause of compensable workplace injuries loss is manual material handling (MMH). In an attempt to minimise these losses, refinement of existing MMH guidelines is a component of redesigning high risk MMH jobs. In the development of the present MMH 1991 guidelines (Snook and Ciriello 1991), maximum acceptable weights (MAWs) and forces (MAFs) were derived from studies conducted in a 21 year time span before the above publication date. The question arises whether the present generation of workers have the same psychophysically determined weights and forces as those reflected in the guidelines. Therefore, the present study investigated whether secular changes had occurred in key MMH tasks in trials performed by present day local industrial workers. A total of 23 male industrial workers performed 20 variations of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying tasks. A psychophysical methodology, identical to that of the authors' previous experiments, was used whereby the subjects were asked to select a workload they could sustain for 8 h ‘without straining themselves or without becoming unusually tired, weakened, overheated or out of breath’. The results revealed that MAWs of lifting, lowering and carrying averaged 69% of the guideline values. MAFs of pushing and pulling showed less of a drop, averaging 82% and 94% respectively for initial and sustained forces. The results also indicated that the effects of the variables frequency, height, lifting vs. lowering, pushing vs. pulling were similar to earlier reported results, even though the absolute weights or forces were lower. It was concluded that consideration to change existing guidelines, reflecting this new psychophysical set point, may be appropriate if these significant performance decreases are confirmed in other locations, with greater subject numbers, and by other investigators.

Obesity Effects on Maximum Acceptable Weights of Lift

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of obesity on the maximum acceptable weights of lift (MAWL) Two obesity levels were considered: non-obese (18.5 kg/m2≤BMI≤24.9 kg/m2) and extremely obese (BMI≥ 40 kg/m2). Each obesity level had 10 male participants. The participants determined their MAWL for 18 different lifting task conditions (6 lifting frequencies × 3 lifting heights). An ANOVA was conducted to determine the effects of obesity level, lifting height, lifting frequency and their interactions on MAWL. In general, the ANOVA results revealed that obesity does not reduce MAWL. This indicates that there may not be a need to develop new psychophysical lifting limits for the obese worker population. However, in order to develop comprehensive lifting limit guidelines for the obese worker population, future studies should investigate the biomechanical and physiological based lifting tolerance limits for them.
