Intramuscular fat infiltration influences mechanical properties during muscle contraction in older women.

Although evidence suggests that intramuscular fat infiltration may influence muscle strength, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether intramuscular fat infiltration affects muscle mechanical properties during contraction, and whether these mechanical properties mediate the relationship between intramuscular fat infiltration and muscle strength. Seventy-nine healthy older women aged 75.1±6.8 years were included in this study. The echo intensity (EI) of the vastus lateralis (VL) was measured as an intramuscular fat infiltration index using B-mode ultrasonography. Maximum voluntary isometric contraction strength (MVIC) was assessed using a dynamometer. The VL shear elastic modulus (G), a mechanical property index, was measured using ultrasound shear wave elastography under various muscle contraction conditions, at rest and at 15, 30, and 45% MVIC (G0, G15, G30, and G45). To evaluate the degree of increase in the shear elastic modulus with increasing muscle contraction intensity, the slope of the regression line (Gslope) between muscle contraction and shear elastic modulus was calculated for each participant. The results showed that EI was significantly associated with G30 and G45 but not with G0 or G15. The EI can significantly explain the inter-individual differences in Gslope. Mediation analysis revealed that the effect of EI on MVIC through Gslope was significant (indirect effect = -0.31, 95% confidence interval [-0.57, -0.12]). These findings suggest that a greater EI is associated with a lower G during muscle contraction. Furthermore, our results show that the relationship between EI and MVIC is mediated by Gslope.

30-sit-to-stand power is a better tool than isometric knee extensor strength to detect motor impairment in people with haemophilic arthropathy.

Regular assessment of motor impairments is crucial in people with haemophilic arthropathy (PwHA). This study aimed to determine if there are differences in 30-secondssit-to-stand (30-STS) power and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the knee extensors between PwHA and healthy control group (CG). The secondary aims were to investigate the correlation between 30-STS power and MVIC of knee extensors with clinical characteristics and to assess their effectiveness in identifying motor impairment in PwHA. A cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting data from PwHA (n=17) and a sedentary CG (n=15). MVIC (torque) and 30-STS power were normalised to body mass. Correlation analysis and simple linear regression adjusted for age were used to assess the association between tests and clinical variables. Using z-scores derived from the mean and standard deviation of the CG, we compared the MVIC and the 30-STS power in PwHA. PwHA showed lower MVIC and 30-STS power compared to CG (p<.001; large effect size d>.8). Lower 30-STS power was associated with greater joint impairment and greater fear of movement, whereas MVIC showed no association with clinical variables. 30-STS power showed a lower z-score compared to MVIC (p<.001). In addition, 30-STS power detected 47% of PwHA with motor impairment compared to 0% for MVIC (p=.002). Our results suggest that 30-STS power may be more effective than knee extensors MVIC in detecting motor impairment in PwHA. Consequently, lower limb skeletal muscle power, rather than maximum knee extensor strength, appears to be more affected in PwHA.

Supraspinal, spinal, and motor unit adjustments to fatiguing isometric contractions of the knee extensors at low and high submaximal intensities in males.

Contraction intensity is a key factor determining the development of muscle fatigue and it has been shown to induce distinct changes along the motor pathway. The role of cortical and spinal inputs that regulate motor unit (MU) behaviour during fatiguing contractions is poorly understood. We studied the cortical, spinal, and neuromuscular response to sustained fatiguing isometric tasks performed at 20 and 70% of the maximum isometric voluntary contraction (MVC), together with MUs behaviour of knee extensors in healthy active males. Neuromuscular function was assessed before and after performing both tasks. Cortical and spinal responses during exercise were measured via stimulation of the motor cortex and spinal cord. High density electromyography was used to record individual MUs from the vastus lateralis (VL). Exercise at 70% MVC induced greater decline in MVC (p = 0.023), and potentiated twitch force compared to 20%MVC (p < .001), with no difference in voluntary activation (p = 0.514). Throughout exercise, corticospinal responses were greater during the 20%MVC task (p < 0.001), and spinal responses increased over time in both tasks (p ≤ 0.042). MU discharge rate increased similarly following both tasks (p ≤ 0.043) while recruitment and de-recruitment thresholds were unaffected (p ≥ 0.295). These results suggest that increased excitability of cortical and spinal inputs might be responsible for the increase in MU discharge rate. The increase in evoked responses together with the higher MUs discharge rate might be required to compensate for peripheral adjustments to sustain fatiguing contractions at different intensities.

The Effects of Anchoring a Fatiguing Forearm Flexion Task to a High vs. Low Rating of Perceived Exertion on Torque and Neuromuscular Responses.

J Strength Cond Res 38(5): e219-e225, 2024-This study examined the torque and neuromuscular responses following sustained, isometric, forearm flexion tasks anchored to 2 ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). Nine men (mean ± SD: age = 21.0 ± 2.4 years; height = 179.5 ± 5.1 cm; body mass = 79.6 ± 11.4 kg) completed maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) before and after sustained, isometric, forearm flexion tasks to failure anchored to RPE = 2 and RPE = 8. The amplitude (AMP) and mean power frequency (MPF) of the electromyographic (EMG) signal were recorded from the biceps brachii. Normalized torque was divided by normalized EMG AMP to calculate neuromuscular efficiency (NME). A dependent t-test was used to assess the mean difference for time to task failure (TTF). Repeated-measures analysis of variances was used to compare mean differences for MVIC and normalized neuromuscular parameters. There was no significant difference in TTF between RPE = 2 and RPE = 8 (p = 0.713). The MVIC decreased from pretest to posttest at RPE = 2 (p = 0.009) and RPE = 8 (p = 0.003), and posttest MVIC at RPE = 8 was less than that at RPE = 2 (p < 0.001). In addition, NME decreased from pretest to posttest (p = 0.008). There was no change in normalized EMG AMP or EMG MPF (p > 0.05). The current findings indicated that torque responses were intensity specific, but TTF and neuromuscular responses were not. Furthermore, normalized EMG AMP and EMG MPF remained unchanged but NME decreased, likely due to peripheral fatigue and excitation-contraction coupling failure. Thus, this study provides information regarding the neuromuscular responses and mechanisms of fatigue associated with tasks anchored to RPE, which adds to the foundational understanding of the relationship between resistance exercise and the perception of fatigue.

Repeated bout effect and muscle damage at variable eccentric exercise intensities in active young men: a longitudinal repeated measures investigation

Abstract Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and repeated bout effect (RBE) are widely researched across various populations and at various intensities. Despite the existence of vast literature, there is lack of comparison of low versus submaximal versus maximal intensity required for preconditioning. The aim of the study was to compare the muscle damage and RBE at various intensities of eccentric exercise in active young men. Thirty-six healthy, physically active men were recruited and randomly assigned to three different groups low-high (L-H, n = 12), submaximal-high (M-H, n = 12) and maximal-high (H-H, n = 12). All participants performed 2 exercise bouts separated by 14 days. L-H, M-H and H-H groups performed low (10% of 1RM), moderate (50% of 1RM) and high (90% of 1RM) intensity eccentric exercise for knee extensors, respectively, in the 1st bout followed by high (100% of 1RM) intensity in the second bout. Muscle soreness (SOR), thigh circumference (CIR), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), range of motion (ROM) and blood lactate (Bl Lac) were measured before, immediately, at 24 h, at 48 h and at 72 h after exercise. A significant effect of time appeared for MVIC (), CIR (), ROM () and Bl Lac (). The bout × time interaction, as well as bout × time × group interaction was also found significant indicating changes in muscle strength and ROM. Circumference changed significantly with a significant bout × group interaction effect . SOR () was significant between the bouts. Therefore, exhibiting attenuation of muscle damage markers after the second bout. Findings of the present study showed that muscle damage was evident at all three intensities. Moreover, it was greater after moderate and high intensity as compared to low intensity eccentric exercise. RBE was elicited after three intensities indicating their role in preconditioning the muscles of active men.

Relationships between nitric oxide biomarkers and physiological outcomes following dietary nitrate supplementation

Dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation can increase nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, reduce blood pressure (BP) and improve muscle contractile function in humans. Plasma nitrite concentration (plasma [NO2-]) is the most oft-used biomarker of NO bioavailability. However, it is unclear which of several NO biomarkers (NO3-, NO2-, S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs)) in plasma, whole blood (WB), red blood cells (RBC) and skeletal muscle correlate with the physiological effects of acute and chronic dietary NO3- supplementation. Using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design, 12 participants (9 males) consumed NO3--rich beetroot juice (BR) (∼12.8 mmol NO3-) and NO3--depleted placebo beetroot juice (PL) acutely and then chronically (for two weeks). Biological samples were collected, resting BP was assessed, and 10 maximal voluntary isometric contractions of the knee extensors were performed at 2.5-3.5 hours following supplement ingestion on day 1 and day 14. Diastolic BP was significantly lower in BR (-2 ± 3 mmHg, P=0.03) compared to PL following acute supplementation, while the absolute rate of torque development (RTD) was significantly greater in BR at 0-30 ms (39 ± 57 N.m.s-1, P=0.03) and 0-50 ms (79 ± 99 N.m.s-1, P=0.02) compared to PL following two weeks supplementation. Greater WB [RSNOs] rather than plasma [NO2-] was correlated with lower diastolic BP (r=-0.68, P=0.02) in BR compared to PL following acute supplementation, while greater skeletal muscle [NO3-] was correlated with greater RTD at 0-30 ms (r=0.64, P=0.03) in BR compared to PL following chronic supplementation. We conclude that [RSNOs] in blood, and [NO3-] in skeletal muscle, are relevant biomarkers of NO bioavailability which are related to the reduction of BP and the enhanced muscle contractile function following dietary NO3- ingestion in humans.

Neuromuscular Control during the Bench Press Exercise Performed with Free Weights and Pneumatic Loading

The main objective of the research was to determine neuromuscular control for different external loads, from 75% to 100% 1 RM (One Rep Max), during the flat bench press (BP) exercise performed with free weights and pneumatic loading. Despite extensive research on the internal structure of the BP exercise, few studies have examined the differences between muscular activity during the flat bench press movement between Free Weights and Pneumatic Loading. For this purpose, 10 male, trained subjects performed the BP exercise under two conditions with three different external loads (70%, 85%, and 100% 1RM), alternately with free weights and pneumatic loading. Pneumatic loading was performed on the Keiser Power Rack, where the pneumatic load was transferred as the resistance of the cables attached to the ground. EMG activity was recorded during the lifts for the following muscles: PM (Pectoralis Major), AD (Anterior Deltoid), Tblat, and TBlong (Triceps Brachii). The EMG signals were sampled at a rate of 1000 Hz. Signals were band-pass filtered with a cutoff frequency of 8 Hz and 450 Hz, after which the root-mean-square (RMS) was calculated. After completion of all the tests in a single day, 2–3 s evaluations of Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC) of the prime movers in the bench press movement (AD, PM, and TBlong) were performed according to SENIAM procedures. The results of the present study indicate that pneumatic loading provides a significantly different muscle activation pattern compared to a standard bar during a heavy-loaded BP exercise. The pneumatic load was superior in activating the AD and TB muscles compared to the standard bar during the BP exercise.

A dataset for fatigue estimation during shoulder internal and external rotation movements using wearables

Wearable sensors have recently been extensively used in sports science, physical rehabilitation, and industry providing feedback on physical fatigue. Information obtained from wearable sensors can be analyzed by predictive analytics methods, such as machine learning algorithms, to determine fatigue during shoulder joint movements, which have complex biomechanics. The presented dataset aims to provide data collected via wearable sensors during a fatigue protocol involving dynamic shoulder internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) movements. Thirty-four healthy subjects performed shoulder IR and ER movements with different percentages of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) force until they reached the maximal exertion. The dataset includes demographic information, anthropometric measurements, MVIC force measurements, and digital data captured via surface electromyography, inertial measurement unit, and photoplethysmography, as well as self-reported assessments using the Borg rating scale of perceived exertion and the Karolinska sleepiness scale. This comprehensive dataset provides valuable insights into physical fatigue assessment, allowing the development of fatigue detection/prediction algorithms and the study of human biomechanical characteristics during shoulder movements within a fatigue protocol.

Association between Serum Biomarkers of Muscle Damage after Isokinetic Eccentric Exercise in Trained Males and Females

Eccentric exercise is well-known to induce muscle damage, and biomarkers may be related to the magnitude of impact on muscle force and muscle soreness after exercise. However, this phenomenon still needs to be investigated in more detail. The present study aimed to analyze if a correlation between muscle force, soreness, and biomarkers after eccentric exercise exists in healthy, trained 11 males and females. Eleven volunteers with previous resistance training experience performed 6 x 10 maximal isokinetic eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors in the muscle performance laboratory up to 72 hours after exercise. Peak torque was measured by maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) and muscle soreness by visual analogic scale (VAS) before, 24h, 48h, and 72h after the isokinetic eccentric exercise protocol. A fluorescence immunoassay analyzer determined Myoglobin and C-reactive protein levels. The MVIC significantly decreased while muscle soreness increased 24h, 48h, and 72h post eccentric exercise. Myoglobin significantly increased 48h and 72h after exercise. Muscle soreness was inversely correlated with MVIC 24h, 48h, and 72h and positively correlated with myoglobin 48h and 72h after eccentric exercise. The myoglobin was not correlated with muscle force. No significant correlation between C-reactive protein and muscle soreness and MVIC was found. In conclusion, our data suggest that myoglobin could be a valuable biomarker to be assessed alongside exercise-induced muscle soreness.   

Motor unit firing rates increase in prepubescent youth following linear periodization resistance exercise training.

The purpose was to examine the effects of 8-weeks (3days/week) of linear periodization resistance exercise training (RET) on neuromuscular function in prepubescent youth. Twenty-five healthy prepubescent youth (11 males, 14 females, age = 9.1 ± 0.8years) completed the RET (n = 17) or served as controls (CON, n = 8). Isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) and trapezoidal submaximal contractions at 35 and 60% MVC of the right leg extensors were performed with surface electromyography (EMG) recorded from the leg extensors [vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris, and vastus medialis] and flexors (biceps femoris and semitendinosus). EMG amplitude of the leg extensors and flexors were calculated during the MVCs. Motor unit (MU) action potential trains were decomposed from the surface EMG of the VL for the 35 and 60% MVCs. MU firing rates and action potential amplitudes were regressed against recruitment threshold with the y-intercepts and slopes calculated for each contraction. Total leg extensor muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) was collected using ultrasound images. ANOVA models were used to examine potential differences. Isometric strength increased post-RET (P = 0.006) with no changes in leg extensor and flexor EMG amplitude. Furthermore, there were no changes in total CSA or the MU action potential amplitude vs. recruitment threshold relationships. However, there were increases in the firing rates of the higher-threshold MUs post-RET as indicated with greater y-intercepts (P = 0.003) from the 60% MVC and less negative slope (P = 0.004) of the firing rates vs. recruitment threshold relationships at 35% MVC. MU adaptations contribute to strength increases following RET in prepubescent youth.

The impact of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation on isometric bench press performance in trained athletes

Athletic development centers on optimizing performance, including technical skills and fundamental motor abilities such as strength and speed. Parameters such as maximum contraction force and rate of force development, influence athletic success, although performance gains become harder to achieve as athletic abilities increase. Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation of the cerebellum (CB-tDCS) has been used successfully to increase force production in novices, although the potential effects in athletes remain unexplored. The present study examined the effects of CB-tDCS on maximum isometric voluntary contraction force (MVCiso) and isometric rate of force development (RFDiso) during a bench press task in well-trained athletes. 21 healthy, male, strength-trained athletes participated in a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blinded crossover design. Each participant completed the isometric bench press (iBP) task on two separate days, with at least 5 days between sessions, while receiving either CB-tDCS or sham stimulation. Electromyography (EMG) recordings of three muscles involved in iBP were acquired bilaterally to uncover differences in neuromuscular activation and agonist-antagonist co-contraction between conditions. Contrary to our hypothesis, no significant differences in MVCiso and RFDiso were observed between CB-tDCS and sham conditions. Furthermore, no tDCS-induced differences in neuromuscular activation or agonist-antagonist co-contraction were revealed. Here, we argue that the effects of CB-tDCS on force production appear to depend on the individual's training status. Future research should study individual differences in tDCS responses between athletes and novices, as well as the potential of high-definition tDCS for precise brain region targeting to potentially enhance motor performance in athletic populations.

Pumping up the Fight against Multiple Sclerosis: The Effects of High-Intensity Resistance Training on Functional Capacity, Muscle Mass, and Axonal Damage.

Resistance training (RT) has been recognized as a beneficial non-pharmacological intervention for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, but its impact on neurodegeneration is not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-intensity RT on muscle mass, strength, functional capacity, and axonal damage in MS patients. Eleven relapsing-remitting MS patients volunteered in this within-subject counterbalanced intervention study. Serum neurofilament light-chain (NfL) concentration, vastus lateralis thickness (VL), timed up-and-go test (TUG), sit-to-stand test (60STS), and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) were measured before and after intervention. Participants performed 18 sessions of high-intensity RT (70-80% 1-RM) over 6 weeks. Significant (p < 0.05) differences were observed post-intervention for VL (ES = 2.15), TUG (ES = 1.98), 60STS (ES = 1.70), MVIC (ES = 1.78), and NfL (ES = 1.43). Although moderate correlations between changes in VL (R = 0.434), TUG (R = -0.536), and MVIC (R = 0.477) and changes in NfL were observed, only the correlation between VL and MVIC changes was significant (R = 0.684, p = 0.029). A 6-week RT program significantly increased muscle mass, functional capacity, and neuromuscular function while also decreasing serum NfL in MS patients. These results suggest the effectiveness of RT as a non-pharmacological approach to mitigate neurodegeneration while improving functional capacity in MS patients.

Can Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition Exist in Peroneal Muscles Among People with Chronic Ankle Instability? A Cross-sectional Study.

Ankle sprains lead to an unexplained reduction of ankle eversion strength, and arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) in peroneal muscles is considered one of the underlying causes. This study aimed to observe the presence of AMI in peroneal muscles among people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Sixty-three people with CAI and another sixty-three without CAI conducted maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and superimposed burst (SIB) tests during ankle eversion, then fifteen people with CAI and fifteen without CAI were randomly invited to repeat the same tests to calculate the test-retest reliability. Electrical stimulation was applied to the peroneal muscles while the participants were performing MVIC, and the central activation ratio (CAR) was obtained by dividing MVIC torque by the sum of MVIC and SIB torques, representing the degree of AMI. The intra-class correlation coefficients were 0.77 (0.45-0.92) and 0.92 (0.79-0.97) for the affected and unaffected limbs among people with CAI, and 0.97 (0.91-0.99) and 0.93 (0.82-0.97) for the controlled affected and unaffected limbs among people without CAI; Significant group × limb interaction was detected in the peroneal CAR (p = 0.008). The CARs were lower among people with CAI in the affected and unaffected limbs, compared with those without CAI (affected limb = 82.54 ± 9.46%, controlled affected limb = 94.64 ± 6.37%, p < 0.001; unaffected limb = 89.21 ± 8.04%, controlled unaffected limb = 94.93 ± 6.01%, p = 0.016). The CARs in the affected limbs were lower than those in the unaffected limbs among people with CAI (p = 0.023). No differences between limbs were found for CAR in the people without CAI (p = 0.10). Bilateral AMI of peroneal muscles is observed among people with CAI. Their affected limbs have higher levels of AMI than the unaffected limbs.

Walking net O2 rises with advancing age in older women: where to go from here?

Walking net O2 tends to increase with advancing age; however, factors contributing to this relationship have not been widely described. The implications of such findings could inform targeted strategies to promote independent mobility in older adults. Herein, we evaluated the relationship between net O2 and age at two submaximal workloads while exploring potential moderators of this relationship. Secondary analyses were performed on 35 older (65 ± 3years) women who completed a battery of physical assessments including fixed-speed, non-graded and graded (+ 2.5%) treadmill walking with indirect calorimetry to determine net O2. Maximal oxygen uptake ( O2max), knee extensor maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MVC), peak rate of torque development (RTD), and plantar flexor range-of-motion (PFROM) were also measured. Bivariate correlations showed non-graded (r = 0.403, p = 0.017) and graded (r = 0.413, p = 0.014) net O2 were positively related to age. Notably, these relationships strengthened after adjusting for O2max. Regression modeling showed age, RTD:MVC ratio (composite of muscle performance), and PFROM together explained 49% and 34% of the variance in non-graded and graded net O2, respectively. Further analyses suggested knee extensor MVC moderates the relationship between non-graded net O2 and age, accounting for 9% of the variance [ΔR2 = 0.090, F (1,31) = 4.13, p = 0.05]. These data support the premise that, in older women, walking net O2 rises with advancing age, and additionally, the RTD:MVC ratio and PFROM are independent correlates of non-graded net O2. Exercise interventions with a high degree of training specificity including explosive, velocity-based elements may promote independent mobility in older women.

Effects of Ankle Position While Performing One- and Two-Leg Floor Bridging Exercises on Core and Lower Extremity Muscle Recruitment.

Given there are no known studies which have examined multiple lower extremity muscles between different ankle positions during bridging activities, the objective was to assess how employing two different ankle positions (PF versus DF) while performing five common bridging exercises (three bipedal and two unipedal) used in rehabilitation and athletic performance affect core and select lower extremity muscle EMG recruitment. Twenty healthy subjects performed a 5 s isometric hold during five two- and one-leg bridge exercises: (1) on right leg with left knee to chest (1LB-LFlex); (2) on right leg with left knee extended (1LB-LExt); (3) standard two-leg bridge (2LB); (4) two-leg bridge with resistance band around knees (2LB-ABD); and (5) two-leg bridge with ball between knees (2LB-ADD). Surface electromyographic (EMG) data were collected using a Noraxon Telemyo Direct Transmission System from fourteen muscles: (1) three superficial quadriceps (VM, VL, and RF); (2) three hip abductors (TFL, GMED, and GMAX); (3) medial hamstrings (ST) and lateral hamstrings (BF); (4) hip adductors (ADD); (5) erector spinae (ES); (6) latissimus dorsi (LATS); (7) upper rectus abdominis (RA); and (8) external oblique (EO) and internal oblique (IO). EMG data were normalized by maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). A paired t-test (p < 0.01) was used to assess differences in normalized mean EMG activities between DF and PF for each exercise. EMG activities were significantly greater in DF than PF for the (a) VM, VL, and RF during 1LB-LFlex; (b) ADD during 1LB-LFlex, 1LB-LExt; (c) EO during 1LB-LFlex; and (d) IO during 1LB-LFex. In contrast, EMG activities were significantly greater in PF than DF for ST and BF during all five bridge exercises. Bridging with PF (feet flat) was most effective in recruiting the hamstrings, while bridging with DF (feet up) was most effective in recruiting the quadriceps, hip adductors, and internal and external obliques.

Relationship between intended force and actual force: comparison between athletes and non-athletes.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether athletes (ATHL) and non-athletes (NON-ATHL) individuals had similar accuracy in matching intended to actual force during ballistic (BAL) and tonic (TON) isometric contractions. In this cross-sectional study, the subjects were divided into ATHL (n=20; 22.4 ± 2.3 yrs; 73.2±15.7kg; 1.76 ± 0.08 m) and NON-ATHL (n=20; 24.6 ± 2.4 yrs; 68.2 ± 15.0kg; 1.73±0.1 m) groups. The isometric quadriceps strength was measured with a load cell applied to a custom-built chair. For each condition, subjects performed at first three maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) as reference. Then, subjects had to match three intended force intensities expressed in percentage of the MVIC (i.e., 25%, 50%, and 75%) without any external feedback. Subjects performed three trials for each force intensity. The accuracy (AC) was calculated as the absolute difference in percentage between the intended and the actual force. A Likert scale was administered for each trial to assess the subjective matching between the intended and the actual force. Statistical analysis showed that the ATHL group was more accurate (p<0.001) than the NON-ATHL group. In contrast, the AC (p<0.001) was lower when the force intensities increased independently from the group. Moreover, significantly higher AC (p<0.001) and lower aggregate Likert scores (p<0.001) were found in BAL than TON conditions. These results suggest that (i) sports practice could enhance muscle recruitment strategies by increasing the AC in the isometric task; (ii) differences between intended and actual force appeared to be intensity-dependent with lower AC at high force intensities; (iii) different control systems act in modulating BAL and TON contractions.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation producing low evoked force elicits the repeated bout effect on muscle damage markers of the elbow flexors

This study examined the repeated bout effect (RBE) on muscle damage markers following two bouts of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in untrained individuals. Following familiarization, participants received 45 consecutive NMES to the biceps brachii at an intensity that produced low evoked force for the elbow flexors. Muscle damage markers (maximal voluntary isometric contraction [MVIC], elbow range of motion [ROM], muscle soreness via visual analogue scale [VAS] scores, pressure pain threshold [PPT], and muscle thickness) were measured before (PRE), after (POST), 1 day after (24 POST), and 2 days after (48 POST) NMES. Following 1 week of rest, procedures were replicated. Separate repeated measures two-way ANOVAs examined each measure. There were no interactions or bout main effects for MVIC or ROM. Time main effects indicated PRE MVIC was greater than POST (p ​= ​0.002) and 24-POST (p ​= ​0.024), and PRE ROM was greater than POST (p ​= ​0.036). There was no interaction for muscle thickness. Respective time and bout main effects indicated muscle thickness at PRE was less than POST (p ​= ​0.017), and second-bout muscle thickness (p ​= ​0.050) was less compared to the initial-bout. For PPT, there was an interaction (p ​= ​0.019). Initial-bout PRE PPT was less than POST (p ​= ​0.033). Initial-bout 48-POST PPT was less than second-bout 48-POST (p ​= ​0.037). There was a significant interaction for VAS (p ​= ​0.009). Initial-bout PRE VAS was less than POST (p ​= ​0.033) and 24-POST (p ​= ​0.015). Initial-bout POST and 24-POST VAS were greater than second-bout POST (p ​= ​0.023) and 24-POST (p ​= ​0.006), respectively. The results support RBE on muscle damage markers related to inflammation, but not MVIC and ROM.

Performance and perceived fatigability across the intensity spectrum: role of muscle mass during cycling.

The role of muscle mass in modulating performance and perceived fatigability across the entire intensity spectrum during cycling remains unexplored. We hypothesized that at task failure (Tlim), muscle contractile function would decline more following single- (SL) versus double-leg (DL) cycling within severe and extreme intensities, but not moderate and heavy intensities. After DL and SL ramp-incremental tests, on separate days, 11 recreationally active males (V̇o2max: 49.5 ± 7.7 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed SL and DL cycling until Tlim within each intensity domain. Power output for SL trials was set at 60% of the corresponding DL trial. Before and immediately after Tlim, participants performed an isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) coupled with one superimposed and three resting femoral nerve stimulations [100 Hz; 10 Hz; single twitch (Qtw)] to measure performance fatigability. Perceived fatigue, leg pain, dyspnea, and effort were collected during trials. Tlim within each intensity domain was not different between SL and DL (all P > 0.05). MVC declined more for SL versus DL following heavy- (-42 ± 16% vs. -30 ± 18%; P = 0.011) and severe-intensity cycling (-41 ± 12% vs. -31 ± 15%; P = 0.036). Similarly, peak Qtw force declined more for SL following heavy- (-31 ± 12% vs. -22 ± 10%; P = 0.007) and severe-intensity cycling (-49 ± 13% vs. -40 ± 7%; P = 0.048). Except for heavy intensity, voluntary activation reductions were similar between modes. Similarly, except for dyspnea, which was lower for SL versus DL across all domains, ratings of fatigue, pain, and effort were similar at Tlim between exercise modes. Thus, the amount of muscle mass modulates the extent of contractile function impairment in an intensity-dependent manner.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We investigated the modulatory role of muscle mass on performance and perceived fatigability across the entire intensity spectrum. Despite similar time-to-task failure, single-leg cycling resulted in greater impairments in muscle contractile function within the heavy- and severe-intensity domains, but not the moderate- and extreme-intensity domains. Perceived fatigue, pain, and effort were similar between cycling modes. This indicates that the modulatory role of muscle mass on the extent of performance fatigability is intensity domain-dependent.

Distal hamstrings tendons mechanical properties at rest and contraction using free-hand 3-D ultrasonography.

Tendon properties impact human locomotion, influencing sports performance, and injury prevention. Hamstrings play a crucial role in sprinting, particularly the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), which is prone to frequent injuries. It remains uncertain if BFlh exhibits distinct mechanical properties compared to other hamstring muscles. This study utilized free-hand three-dimensional ultrasound to assess morphological and mechanical properties of distal hamstrings tendons in 15 men. Scans were taken in prone position, with hip and knee extended, at rest and during 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the knee flexors. Tendon length, volume, cross-sectional area (CSA), and anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) widths were quantified at three locations. Longitudinal and transverse deformations, stiffness, strain, and stress were estimated. The ST had the greatest tendon strain and the lowest stiffness as well as the highest CSA and AP and ML width strain compared to other tendons. Biceps femoris short head (BFsh) exhibited the least strain, AP and ML deformation. Further, BFlh displayed the highest stiffness and stress, and BFsh had the lowest stress. Additionally, deformation varied by region, with the proximal site showing generally the lowest CSA strain. Distal tendon mechanical properties differed among the hamstring muscles during isometric knee flexions. In contrast to other bi-articular hamstrings, the BFlh high stiffness and stress may result in greater energy absorption by its muscle fascicles, rather than the distal tendon, during late swing in sprinting. This could partly account for the increased incidence of hamstring injuries in this muscle.

Effects of far-infrared radiation lamp therapy on recovery from a simulated soccer-match in elite female soccer players.

We investigated the effects of far-infrared radiation (FIR) lamp therapy on changes in muscle damage and performance parameters following six sets of 15-min Loughborough intermittent shuttle test (LIST), a simulated soccer match. Twenty-four elite female soccer players (20-24 y) were assigned into FIR or sham treatment group (n = 12/group). The participants received a 60-min FIR or sham treatment (30 min per muscle) over knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF) at 2, 25, 49, 73, and 97 h post-LIST. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque and muscle soreness of the KE and KF, plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity as muscle damage markers, and several performance parameters including countermovement jump (CMJ) and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1 (YYIR1) were measured before and 1, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h post-LIST. Changes in the measures were compared between groups by a mixed-design two-way ANOVA. The running distance covered during LIST and changes in the measures at 1-h post-LIST (before the treatment) were similar (p = 0.118-0.371) between groups. Changes in muscle damage markers at 24-120 h post-LIST were smaller (p < 0.05, η2 = 0.208-0.467) for the FIR (e.g., MVC-KE torque decrease at 48-h post-LIST: -1 ± 2%, peak KE soreness: 16 ± 10 mm, peak CK: 172 ± 42 IU/L) than sham group (-11 ± 9%, 33 ± 7 mm, 466 ± 220 IU/L, respectively). Performance parameters recovered faster (p < 0.05, η2 = 0.142-0.308) to baseline for the FIR (e.g., decreases at 48-h post-LIST; CMJ: 0 ± 1%, YYIR1: 0 ± 1%) than sham group (-6 ± 2%, -9 ± 6%, respectively). These results suggest that the FIR lamp therapy was effective for enhancing recovery from a soccer match.
