Impaired performance of rapid grip in people with Parkinson's disease and motor segmentation

Bradykinesia, or slow movement, is a defining symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the underlying neuromechanical deficits that lead to this slowness remain unclear. People with PD often have impaired rates of motor output accompanied by disruptions in neuromuscular excitation, causing abnormal, segmented, force-time curves. Previous investigations using single-joint models indicate that agonist electromyogram (EMG) silent periods cause motor segmentation. It is unknown whether motor segmentation is evident in more anatomically complex and ecologically important tasks, such as handgrip tasks. Aim 1 was to determine how handgrip rates of force change compare between people with PD and healthy young and older adults. Aim 2 was to determine whether motor segmentation is present in handgrip force and EMG measures in people with PD. Subjects performed rapid isometric handgrip pulses to 20–60% of their maximal voluntary contraction force while EMG was collected from the grip flexors and extensors. Dependent variables included the time to 90% peak force, the peak rate of force development, the duration above 90% of peak force, the number of segments in the force-time curve, the number of EMG bursts, time to relaxation from 90% of peak force, and the peak rate of force relaxation. People with PD had longer durations and lower rates of force change than young and older adults. Six of 22 people with PD had motor segmentation. People with PD had more EMG bursts compared to healthy adults and the number of EMG bursts covaried with the number of segments. Thus, control of rapid movement in Parkinson's disease can be studied using isometric handgrip. People with PD have impaired rate control compared to healthy adults and motor segmentation can be studied in handgrip.

Central motor output does not interact with muscle metaboreceptors input for ventilation regulation during dynamic exercise in health humans

INTRODUCTION: The muscle metaboreflex typically does not contribute to ventilation regulation when activated in isolation at rest via post-exercise circulatory occlusion (PECO), but it might synergistically interact with other mechanisms operating during voluntary exercise. Efferent signals from brain areas involved in the motor control of appendicular skeletal muscles to the medulla (i.e., central command) supposedly contribute to ventilation regulation during voluntary exercise. Therefore, we sought to test the hypothesis that central motor output interacts with muscle metaboreceptor input, generating a greater ventilatory response to PECO during voluntary exercise than electrically-induced involuntary exercise. METHODS: Thirteen healthy adults (4 women, age: 26 ± 5 years) participated in the study. Each participant completed four experiments in random order. Two experiments were accomplished per visit at 30-minute intervals. The interval between visits was at least two and at most seven days. The muscle metaboreflex was activated by rhythmic handgrip exercise with the dominant hand at 60% of the maximal voluntary contraction force with a 2-s duty cycle. Then, the muscle metaboreflex remained active for a 4-minute recovery period via PECO, or it was inactivated via free circulation to the exercised arm. During the last 2-minutes of the handgrip exercise recovery, participants either performed unilateral voluntary plantar flexion with the dominant leg to generate central motor output or the dominant leg’s calf was involuntarily activated by electrical stimulation not to have central motor output. Voluntary and involuntary calf contractions were performed at the same external workload. A rebreathing circuit maintained isocapnia throughout all experiments. A bidirectional turbine measured breath-by-breath airflow. Heart rate was measured via ECG, and arterial pressure by auscultation in a resting arm. RESULTS: Ventilation, heart rate, and arterial pressure increased during handgrip exercise similarly in all experiments. PECO-induced muscle metaboreflex activation maintained ventilation (Δ = 5.4 ± 5.2 l/min, P = 0.003), heart rate (Δ = 6.6 ± 8.0 bpm, P = 0.011) and systolic arterial pressure (Δ = 28.4 ± 14.8 mmHg, P < 0.001) elevated above the control handgrip exercise recovery with free circulation to the exercised arm. The ventilation response to voluntary plantar flexion was greater when PECO was present in the arm than when it was absent (Δ = 8.3 ± 5.6 l/min vs. 4.5 ± 2.7 l/min, P = 0.006), reproducing previous findings. However, the ventilation response to voluntary and involuntary plantar flexion with a PECO background was similar (Δ = 8.3 ± 5.6 l/min vs. 8.2 ± 6.3 l/min, P = 1.000). CONCLUSION: The data do not support that an interaction between central motor output and muscle metaboreceptors input is obligatory to generate a ventilatory response to PECO during voluntary exercise. A dataset for fatigue estimation during shoulder internal and external rotation movements using wearables

Wearable sensors have recently been extensively used in sports science, physical rehabilitation, and industry providing feedback on physical fatigue. Information obtained from wearable sensors can be analyzed by predictive analytics methods, such as machine learning algorithms, to determine fatigue during shoulder joint movements, which have complex biomechanics. The presented dataset aims to provide data collected via wearable sensors during a fatigue protocol involving dynamic shoulder internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) movements. Thirty-four healthy subjects performed shoulder IR and ER movements with different percentages of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) force until they reached the maximal exertion. The dataset includes demographic information, anthropometric measurements, MVIC force measurements, and digital data captured via surface electromyography, inertial measurement unit, and photoplethysmography, as well as self-reported assessments using the Borg rating scale of perceived exertion and the Karolinska sleepiness scale. This comprehensive dataset provides valuable insights into physical fatigue assessment, allowing the development of fatigue detection/prediction algorithms and the study of human biomechanical characteristics during shoulder movements within a fatigue protocol.

SEX DIFFERENCE IN ABSOLUTE AND NORMALIZED FORCE AT FOUR DIFFERENT ISOMETRIC CONTRACTION INTENSITIES

Purpose: When measuring isometric contractions, providing real-time visual feedback differs from the practices in general clinical environment. In addition, even though men and women have clear physical and physiological differences, most of the existing studies analyzed absolute muscle contractions with no distinction between men and women. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there are differences in absolute and normalized hip extension forces measured without visual feedback between men and women. Methods: Twenty-eight healthy adults participated (13 men and 15 women; age=- 22.00±11.44 years; height=165.86±18.30 cm; and weight=61.91±12.34 kg) in the study. The impact of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation on isometric bench press performance in trained athletes

Athletic development centers on optimizing performance, including technical skills and fundamental motor abilities such as strength and speed. Parameters such as maximum contraction force and rate of force development, influence athletic success, although performance gains become harder to achieve as athletic abilities increase. Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation of the cerebellum (CB-tDCS) has been used successfully to increase force production in novices, although the potential effects in athletes remain unexplored. The present study examined the effects of CB-tDCS on maximum isometric voluntary contraction force (MVCiso) and isometric rate of force development (RFDiso) during a bench press task in well-trained athletes. 21 healthy, male, strength-trained athletes participated in a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blinded crossover design. Each participant completed the isometric bench press (iBP) task on two separate days, with at least 5 days between sessions, while receiving either CB-tDCS or sham stimulation. Electromyography (EMG) recordings of three muscles involved in iBP were acquired bilaterally to uncover differences in neuromuscular activation and agonist-antagonist co-contraction between conditions. Contrary to our hypothesis, no significant differences in MVCiso and RFDiso were observed between CB-tDCS and sham conditions. Furthermore, no tDCS-induced differences in neuromuscular activation or agonist-antagonist co-contraction were revealed. Here, we argue that the effects of CB-tDCS on force production appear to depend on the individual's training status. Future research should study individual differences in tDCS responses between athletes and novices, as well as the potential of high-definition tDCS for precise brain region targeting to potentially enhance motor performance in athletic populations.

The EEG-Based Fusion Entropy-Featured Identification of Isometric Contraction Forces under the Same Action.

This study explores the important role of assessing force levels in accurately controlling upper limb movements in human-computer interfaces. It uses a new method that combines entropy to improve the recognition of force levels. This research aims to differentiate between different levels of isometric contraction forces using electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis. It integrates eight different entropy measures: power spectrum entropy (PSE), singular spectrum entropy (SSE), logarithmic energy entropy (LEE), approximation entropy (AE), sample entropy (SE), fuzzy entropy (FE), alignment entropy (PE), and envelope entropy (EE). The findings emphasize two important advances: first, including a wide range of entropy features significantly improves classification efficiency; second, the fusion entropy method shows exceptional accuracy in classifying isometric contraction forces. It achieves an accuracy rate of 91.73% in distinguishing between 15% and 60% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) forces, along with 69.59% accuracy in identifying variations across 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60% MVC. These results illuminate the efficacy of employing fusion entropy in EEG signal analysis for isometric contraction detection, heralding new opportunities for advancing motor control and facilitating fine motor movements through sophisticated human-computer interface technologies.

Effect of mental fatigue on hand force production capacities.

Mental fatigue is common in society, but its effects on force production capacities remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of mental fatigue on maximal force production, rate of force development-scaling factor (RFD-SF), and force steadiness during handgrip contractions. Fourteen participants performed two randomized sessions, during which they either carried out a cognitively demanding task (i.e., a visual attention task) or a cognitively nondemanding task (i.e., documentary watching for 62 min). The mental fatigue was evaluated subjectively and objectively (performances and electroencephalography). Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force, RFD-SF, and force steadiness (i.e., force coefficient of variation at submaximal intensities; 25, 50, and 75% of MVC) were recorded before and after both tasks. The feeling of mental fatigue was much higher after completing the cognitively demanding task than after documentary watching (p < .001). During the cognitively demanding task, mental fatigue was evidenced by increased errors, missed trials, and decreased N100 amplitude over time. While no effect was reported on force steadiness, both tasks induced a decrease in MVC (p = .040), a force RFD-SF lower slope (p = .011), and a reduction in the coefficient of determination (p = .011). Nevertheless, these effects were not explicitly linked to mental fatigue since they appeared both after the mentally fatiguing task and after watching the documentary. The study highlights the importance of considering cognitive engagement and mental load when optimizing motor performance to mitigate adverse effects and improve force production capacities.

Motor unit modes in the calf muscles during a submaximal isometric contraction are changed by brief stretches.

The purpose of our study was to investigate the influence of a stretch intervention on the common modulation of discharge rate among motor units in the calf muscles during a submaximal isometric contraction. The current report comprises a computational analysis of a motor unit dataset that we published previously (Mazzo etal., 2021). Motor unit activity was recorded from the three main plantar flexor muscles while participants performed an isometric contraction at 10% of the maximal voluntary contraction force before and after each of two interventions. The interventions were a control task (standing balance) and static stretching of the plantar flexor muscles. A factorization analysis on the smoothed discharge rates of the motor units from all three muscles yielded three modes that were independent of the individual muscles. The composition of the modes was not changed by the standing-balance task, whereas the stretching exercise reduced the average correlation in the second mode and increased it in the third mode. A centroid analysis on the correlation values showed that most motor units were associated with two or three modes, which were presumed to indicate shared synaptic inputs. The percentage of motor units adjacent to the seven centroids changed after both interventions: Control intervention, mode 1 decreased and the shared mode 1+2 increased; stretch intervention, shared modes either decreased (1+2) or increased (1+3). These findings indicate that the neuromuscular adjustments during both interventions were sufficient to change the motor unit modes when the same task was performed after each intervention. KEY POINTS: Based on covariation of the discharge rates of motor units in the calf muscles during a submaximal isometric contraction, factor analysis was used to assign the correlated discharge trains to three motor unit modes. The motor unit modes were determined from the combined set of all identified motor units across the three muscles before and after each participant performed a control and a stretch intervention. The composition of the motor unit modes changed after the stretching exercise, but not after the control task (standing balance). A centroid analysis on the distribution of correlation values found that most motor units were associated with a shared centroid and this distribution, presumably reflecting shared synaptic input, changed after both interventions. Our results demonstrate how the distribution of multiple common synaptic inputs to the motor neurons innervating the plantar flexor muscles changes after a brief series of stretches.

Sex differences in fatiguability during single-joint resistance exercise in a resistance-trained population.

The primary aim of this study was to compare the fatiguability and acute recovery from a session of unilateral biceps curl exercise between habitually resistance-trained males and females. Twenty participants performed biceps curl one repetition maximum (1RM) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) testing of the elbow flexors. The exercise protocol consisted of four sets of unilateral biceps curls at 50% of the measured 1RM to volitional failure. MVC force and EMG activity of the elbow flexors were assessed following each set and during the recovery phase. The outcome variables compare the repetition volume, MVC strength loss, and EMG responses between males and females during the exercise and recovery phases. Across the exercise protocol, females completed significantly more repetitions compared to males (p < 0.01, d = 1.7) and lost significantly less strength across time (76% versus 69%, d = 0.48, p = 0.046). Additionally, females maintained a higher level of normalized EMG amplitude compared to males across the protocol (p = 0.035; d = 0.510). However, there were no sex differences in the strength (p = 0.562) or EMG (p = 0.607) responses during the recovery phase. In a resistance-trained population, females were able to perform a greater number of repetitions during the biceps curl exercise compared to their male counterparts at the same relative intensity of exercise. The ability of females to maintain a greater proportion of their maximal elbow flexor strength and muscle excitation during exercise suggests females can tolerate greater upper-body resistance exercise volume than males.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently consumed by athletes to manage muscle soreness, expedite recovery, or improve performance. Despite the prevalence of NSAID use, their effects on muscle soreness and performance, particularly when administered prophylactically, remain unclear. This randomized, double-blind, counter-balanced, crossover study examined the effect of consuming a single dose of each of three NSAIDs (celecoxib, 200 mg; ibuprofen, 800 mg; flurbiprofen, 100 mg) or placebo 2 h before on muscle soreness and performance following an acute plyometric training session. Twelve healthy adults, aged 18–42 years, completed a standardized plyometric exercise session consisting of 10 sets of 10 repetitions at 40 % 1-repetition maximum (1RM) on a leg press device. During exercise, total work, rating of perceived exertion, and heart rate were measured. Maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC), vertical jump height, and muscle soreness were measured before exercise and 4-h and 24-h post-exercise. We found no significant differences in total work, heart rate, or rating of perceived exertion between treatments. Additionally, no significant differences in muscle soreness or vertical jump were observed between treatments. Ibuprofen and flurbiprofen did not prevent decrements in MVC, but celecoxib attenuated decreases in MVC 4-h post exercise (p < 0.05). This study suggests that athletes may not benefit from prophylactic ibuprofen or flurbiprofen treatment to prevent discomfort or performance decrements associated with exercise, but celecoxib may mitigate short-term performance decrements.

Muscle fiber strain rates in the lower leg during ankle dorsi-/plantarflexion exercise.

Static quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides readouts of structural changes in diseased muscle, but current approaches lack the ability to fully explain the loss of contractile function. Muscle contractile function can be assessed using various techniques including phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI), where strain rates are quantified. However, current two-dimensional implementations are limited in capturing the complex motion of contracting muscle in the context of its three-dimensional (3D) fiber architecture. The MR acquisitions (chemical shift-encoded water-fat separation scan, spin echo-echoplanar imaging with diffusion weighting, and two time-resolved 3D PC-MRI) wereperformed at 3 T. PC-MRI acquisitions and performed with and without load at 7.5% of the maximum voluntary dorsiflexion contraction force. Acquisitions (3 T, chemical shift-encoded water-fat separation scan, spin echo-echo planar imaging with diffusion weighting, and two time-resolved 3D PC-MRI) were performed with and without load at 7.5% of the maximum voluntary dorsiflexion contraction force. Strain rates and diffusion tensors were calculated and combined to obtain strain rates along and perpendicular to the muscle fibers in seven lower leg muscles during the dynamic dorsi-/plantarflexion movement cycle. To evaluate strain rates along the proximodistal muscle axis, muscles were divided into five equal segments. t-tests were used to test if cyclic strain rate patterns (amplitude > 0) were present along and perpendicular to the muscle fibers. The effects of proximal-distal location and load were evaluated using repeated measures ANOVAs. Cyclic temporal strain rate patterns along and perpendicular to the fiber were found in all muscles involved in dorsi-/plantarflexion movement (p < 0.0017). Strain rates along and perpendicular to the fiber were heterogeneously distributed over the length of most muscles (p < 0.003). Additional loading reduced strain rates of the extensor digitorum longus and gastrocnemius lateralis muscle (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the lower leg muscles involved in cyclic dorsi-/plantarflexion exercise showed cyclic fiber strain rate patterns with amplitudes that varied between muscles and between the proximodistal segments within the majority of muscles.

Quadriceps fatigue during hypoxic and ischemic knee-extension exercise is similar in males and females.

Hypoxia is known to increase muscle fatigue via both central and peripheral mechanisms. Females are typically less fatigable than males during isometric fatiguing contractions due to greater peripheral blood flow. However, sex differences in fatigue are blunted during dynamic fatiguing tasks. Thus, this study determined the interactions of sex and hypoxia on knee extensor muscle contractile function during a dynamic, ischemic fatiguing contraction. Electrical stimulation was used to determine contractile properties of the knee extensor muscles in eight males and eight females before and after an ischemic, dynamic fatiguing task while inspiring room air or a hypoxic gas mixture (10% O2:90% N2). Fatigue (assessed as time-to-task failure) was ∼10% greater during the hypoxic condition (94.3 ± 33.4 s) compared with normoxic condition (107.0 ± 42.8 s, P = 0.041) and ∼40% greater for females than males (77.1 ± 18.8 vs. 124.2 ± 38.7, P < 0.001). Immediately after the dynamic fatiguing task, there were reductions in maximal voluntary contraction force (P = 0.034) and electrically evoked twitch force (P < 0.001), and these reductions did not differ based on sex or inspirate. Cerebral tissue oxygenation showed a significant interaction of time and inspirate (P = 0.003) whereby it increased during normoxia and remained unchanged in hypoxia. No sex-related differences in the changes of cerebral tissue oxygenation were observed (P = 0.528). These data suggest that acute hypoxia increases central fatigue during ischemic single-leg exercise resulting in earlier exercise termination, but the effect does not differ based on sex.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Hypoxia exacerbates fatigue via central mechanisms after ischemic single-leg exercise. The greater fatigue observed during ischemic dynamic fatiguing exercise with hypoxia inspirate did not differ between the sexes. Hypoxia-induced central limitations are present in acute ischemic exercise and do not appear different in males and females.

Wrist Extensor Muscle Fatigue During a Dual Task With Two Muscular and Cognitive Load Levels in Younger and Older Adults.

To examine the effect of concurrent physical and cognitive demands as well as age on indicators of muscle fatigue at the wrist. There are few studies examining risk indicators for musculoskeletal disorders associated with work-related physical and cognitive demands that often occur simultaneously in the workplace. Twenty-four gender-balanced older and 24 gender-balanced younger (mean age 60 and 23years) participants performed four 30min dual tasks. Tasks differed by the muscular load level during force tracking: 5% and 10% of maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC) and concurrent cognitive demands on the working memory: easy and difficult. Muscle fatigue was assessed by MVC decline and changes in surface electromyography (increased root mean square: RMS, decreased median frequency: MF) at the extensor digitorum (ED) and extensor carpi ulnaris (EU). A decline in MVC was found in all participants when tracking was performed at 10% MVC (mean ± SD: 137.9 ± 49.2 - 123.0 ± 45.3N). Irrespective of age, muscular, or cognitive load, RMS increased (ED 12.3 ± 6.5 - 14.1 ± 7.0% MVE, EU 15.4 ± 7.6 - 16.9 ± 8.6% MVE) and MF decreased (ED 85.4 ± 13.6 - 83.2 ± 12.8Hz, EU 107.2 ± 17.1 - 104.3 ± 16.7Hz) in both muscles. However, changes in MF of EU tended to be more pronounced in the older group at higher cognitive and lower muscular load, without reaching statistical significance. Maximum voluntary contraction indicated no interaction between muscle fatigue, cognitive load, or age. However, the tendencies toward altered muscle activity due to an increase in cognitive load and older age suggest muscular adaptations while maintaining tracking performance during the onset of fatigue signs in the sEMG signal. If the tendencies in muscle activity are confirmed by further studies, ergonomic assessments in industrial workplaces should consider cognitive load and age when describing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

Footedness but not dominance influences force steadiness during isometric dorsiflexion in young men

The aim of the study was to assess the potential influence of footedness and dominance on maximal force, force fluctuations and neural drive during dorsiflexion. Fifteen left-footed (LF) and fifteen right-footed (RF) young adults performed 2 maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and 3 steady submaximal isometric contractions at five target forces (5, 10, 20, 40 and 60% MVC) with the dorsiflexors of both legs. High-density electromyography (EMG) was used to record the discharge characteristics of motor units (MUs) of Tibialis Anterior. MVC force and EMG amplitude (root mean square) were similar between the two legs and groups (p > 0.05). Force fluctuations (Coefficient of Variation, CoV for force), mean discharge rate of MUs, discharge variability (CoV of interspike interval), and variability in neural drive (standard deviation of filtered cumulative spike train) were greater (p < 0.05) and the input–output gain of the MUs (ΔDR/ΔF) was lower (p < 0.05) for the LF relative to the RF group. The differences in force fluctuations during steady contractions with the dorsiflexors were associated with footedness but not with dominance. They reflect greater variability in motor neuron output, as suggested by coefficient of variation for interspike interval (independent input) and the standard deviation of the smoothed discharge times (common input).

Spatial decomposition of ultrafast ultrasound images to identify motor unit activity – A comparative study with intramuscular and surface EMG

The smallest voluntarily controlled structure of the human body is the motor unit (MU), comprised of a motoneuron and its innervated fibres. MUs have been investigated in neurophysiology research and clinical applications, primarily using electromyographic (EMG) techniques. Nonetheless, EMG (both surface and intramuscular) has a limited detection volume. A recent alternative approach to detect MUs is ultrafast ultrasound (UUS) imaging. The possibility of identifying MU activity from UUS has been shown by blind source separation (BSS) of UUS images, using optimal separation spatial filters. However, this approach has yet to be fully compared with EMG techniques for a large population of unique MU spike trains. Here we identify individual MU activity in UUS images using the BSS method for 401 MU spike trains from eleven participants based on concurrent recordings of either surface or intramuscular EMG from forces up to 30% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force. We assessed the BSS method’s ability to identify MU spike trains from direct comparison with the EMG-derived spike trains as well as twitch areas and temporal profiles from comparison with the spike-triggered-averaged UUS images when using the EMG-derived spikes as triggers. We found a moderate rate of correctly identified spikes (53.0 ± 16.0%) with respect to the EMG-identified firings. However, the MU twitch areas and temporal profiles could still be identified accurately, including at 30% MVC force. These results suggest that the current BSS methods for UUS can accurately identify the location and average twitch of a large pool of MUs in UUS images, providing potential avenues for studying neuromechanics from a large cross-section of the muscle. On the other hand, more advanced methods are needed to address the convolutive and partly non-linear summation of velocities for recovering the full spike trains.

A comparison of techniques for verifying the accuracy of precision decomposition-derived relationships between motor unit firing rates and recruitment thresholds from surface EMG signals.

Approaches for validating motor unit firing times following surface electromyographic (EMG) signal decomposition with the precision decomposition III (PDIII) algorithm have not been agreed upon. Two approaches have been common: (1) "reconstruct-and-test" and (2) spike-triggered averaging (STA). We sought to compare motor unit results following the application of these approaches. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis of 13 young males performing trapezoidal, isometric knee extensions at 50% and 80% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force. The PDIII algorithm was used to quantify motor unit firing rates. Motor units were excluded using eight combinations of the reconstruct-and-test approach with accuracy thresholds of 0, 90, 91, and 92% with and without STA. The mean firing rate versus recruitment threshold relationship was minimally affected by STA. At 80% MVC, slopes acquired at the 0% accuracy threshold were significantly greater (i.e., less negative) than when 91% (p = .010) and 92% (p = .030) accuracy thresholds were applied. The application of STA has minimal influence on surface EMG signal decomposition results. Stringent reconstruct-and-test accuracy thresholds influence motor unit-derived relationships at high forces, perhaps explained through the increased presence of large motor unit action potentials. Investigators using the PDIII algorithm can expect negligible changes in motor unit-derived linear regression relationships with the application of secondary validation procedures.

The Influence of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation on Fatigue Resistance.

Previous research has shown that some forms of non-invasive brain stimulation can increase fatigue resistance. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the time to task failure (TTF) of a precision grip task. The study utilized a randomized, double-blind, SHAM-controlled, within-subjects design. Twenty-six young adults completed two experimental sessions (tACS and SHAM) with a 7-day washout period between sessions. Each session involved a fatiguing isometric contraction of the right hand with a precision grip with either a tACS or SHAM stimulation applied to the primary motor cortex (M1) simultaneously. For the fatiguing contraction, the participants matched an isometric target force of 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force until task failure. Pre- and post-MVCs were performed to quantify the force decline due to fatigue. Accordingly, the dependent variables were the TTF and MVC force decline as well as the average EMG activity, force error, and standard deviation (SD) of force during the fatiguing contractions. The results indicate that there were no significant differences in any of the dependent variables between the tACS and SHAM conditions (p value range: 0.256-0.820). These findings suggest that tACS does not increase the TTF during fatiguing contractions in young adults.

Musculoskeletal disorders and functional characteristics of the neck and shoulder: Comparison between office workers using a laptop or desktop computer.

Using a laptop for work is gaining rapid popularity, but there is little evidence of how it influences musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and functional characteristics of the neck and shoulder area. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of upper body MSDs and functional characteristics of the neck between office workers using a laptop or desktop computer. A total of 110 office workers with a mean age of 41±10 years participated. 45 office workers (73% female) used a laptop and 65 office workers (86% female) used desktop computers. The prevalence of MSDs was recorded using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Active range of motion (AROM), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) force, joint position error (JPE), and pain-pressure threshold (PPT) of the neck and shoulder area were measured. Laptop users experienced significantly more MSDs in the right shoulder area on the day of participation (p < 0.001, OR = 4.47), during the previous 7 days (p < 0.01, OR = 3.74), and at 6 months (p < 0.01, OR = 3.57). Laptop users also experienced significantly more MSDs in the left shoulder during the previous 7 days (p < 0.05, OR = 2.44). There were no statistically significant differences in any of the functional characteristics of the neck and shoulder area between the groups. Using the laptop computer for office work may pose a higher risk of developing MSDs in the right shoulder area, but might not have long-term effects on the functional characteristics of the neck and shoulder area.

Sex differences in fatigability and recovery following a 5 km running time trial in recreationally active adults

ABSTRACT Females demonstrate greater fatigue resistance compared to males in tasks ranging from single-limb contractions to whole-body exercise, including running. Many of the studies investigating sex differences in fatigability following running, however, occur after long duration, low-intensity tasks and it is unknown whether there is a sex difference in fatigability following high-intensity running. This study compared fatigability and recovery following a 5 km running time trial in young males and females. Sixteen recreationally active participants (8 males, 8 females, age: 23 ± 4 years) completed a familiarisation and experimental trial. Knee-extensor maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) were performed before and up to 30 min after a 5 km time trial on a treadmill. Heart rate and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded after every kilometre during the time trial. Although not significantly different, males completed the 5 km time trial 15% faster than females (p = 0.095). Heart rate (p = 0.843) and RPE (p = 0.784) were similar between the sexes during the trial. Prior to running, males had larger MVCs (p = 0.014). The relative decrease in MVC force was less in females than males immediately post-exercise (−4.6 ± 2.4% vs. −15.1 ± 3.0%, p < 0.001) and at 10-minutes post-exercise (p = 0.018). At 20- and 30-minutes recovery, however, relative MVC force was not different between the sexes (p ≥ 0.129). These data demonstrate that females experienced less fatigability of the knee extensors than males following a high-intensity 5 km running time trial. The findings highlight the need to understand responses to exercise in both sexes and have implications for recovery from training and exercise prescription. Highlights Data regarding sex differences in fatigability following high-intensity running is relatively sparse. Therefore, this study quantified the decrease in knee-extensor maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC) following a 5-km self-paced running time trial. Despite similar heart rates and ratings of perceived exertion, the percentage decrease in MVC was three times greater in males compared to females. Relative MVCs remained greater in females compared to males until 20 min post-exercise.
