Strategic treatment for a patient with missing lateral incisor and first molar accompanied by posterior scissor bite and an impacted premolar.

Managing orthodontic treatment for adults with missing permanent teeth can be intricate, especially when dealing with a posterior scissor bite and an impacted tooth. This case report presents successful treatment of a female patient with dental and skeletal Class II malocclusion, high mandibular plane angle, missing maxillary left lateral incisor and mandibular right first molar, as well as right posterior scissor bite, and a deeply impacted mandibular left second premolar. In the maxilla, the right second molar and right lateral incisor were strategically extracted to eliminate the scissor bite and enhance frontal esthetic balance. In the mandible, the edentulous space caused by early loss of the first molar was successfully closed and the impacted second premolar was guided into its proper position after surgical exposure. Finally, symmetric frontal esthetics, well-aligned dentition with ideal intercuspation and an improved profile were achieved, which remained stable in the 17 month follow-up.

MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY Double type III dens invaginatus

A 27-year-old male patient presented with a six-month history of swelling involving the left posterior mandible. The patient’s medical history revealed no co-morbidities and the dental history was non-contributory. Extra-orally, there was a localised hard bony swelling involving the left posterior mandible. Intra-oral examination revealed a full complement of teeth with the left maxillary lateral incisor crown appearing malformed and a retained left maxillary deciduous canine. A panoramic radiograph revealed a well-defined, multilocular radiolucency with scalloped inferior borders in the left posterior mandible associated with the fi rst to third molars (Figure 1). On further examination, a periapical was taken and revealed that the left maxillary lateral incisor appeared malformed with a periapical radiolucency (Figure 2). The periapical radiograph confi rmed the presence of a double dens invaginatus on the mesial and distal aspects. The patient was referred for an incisional biopsy of the lesion in the left posterior mandible, which was subsequently diagnosed as an inflamed odontogenic keratocyst and managed accordingly.

Dental prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with parafunctional habit: A case study

Introduction: Parafunctional habits such as clenching, grinding, gnashing of the teeth leave multiple consequences on the natural dentition if left untreated. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to represent a patient treated prosthetically with parafunctional habit of clenching his teeth. Material and methods: For the purpose of this study a 42 year old patient was analyzed, treated and rehabilitated with metal ceramic anterior dental bridge. He was treated with a dental splint before beginning of the treatment. His left central maxillary incisor, left maxillary lateral incisor, and left canine were treated endodontically, and then restaurated with posts and cores. After that a dental frontal aesthetic bridge was manufactured. Because the patient has a habit to clench his teeth, he needs to be monitored so that he does not damage the anterior bridge, which is the reason why a dental splint was designed for protecting the patient. Results and Discussion: Patients with parafunctional habits represent a highly challenging group for treatment. Authors worldwide have tried to find optimal solutions on how to help patients with different parafunctional habits and how to prevent them in the future. In this case study the patient was successfully treated and rehabilitated. Conclusion: The consequences that parafunctional habits can leave on the dentition can be observed, and dental prosthetic treatment can create functional – aesthetic solution that needs to be preserved.

Evaluating Measurements: A Comparative Study of Digital and Plaster Models for Orthodontic Applications in Mixed Dentition

This study aimed to assess the accuracy of tooth widths, intermolar widths, and arch lengths acquired through two intraoral scanners, including iTero Element Plus Series (Align Technology, Santa Clara, CA, USA) and Trios 4 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), specifically on mixed dentition. A total of 30 subjects were divided into 2 groups, each undergoing both alginate impressions and intraoral scanning using either the iTero or Trios scanner. The plaster models were measured with a caliper, while the digital models were measured virtually. In the iTero group, all tooth width measurements exhibited differences compared to the plaster values, except for maxillary left lateral incisors (<i>p</i> = 0.179), mandibular right (<i>p</i> = 0.285), and left (<i>p</i> = 0.073) central incisors. The Trios group did not display significant differences in any of the tooth width measurements. Intermolar width comparisons for both groups indicated differences, except for mandibular primary canine to primary canine values (<i>p</i> = 0.426) in the iTero group. Regarding arch length, the mandibular anterior, maxillary right, and left arch lengths in the iTero group demonstrated larger caliper values than those of iTero. Conversely, in the Trios group, all parameters showed smaller caliper values, especially in upper anterior, maxillary right, mandibular right, and mandibular left arch lengths with significance (<i>p</i> = 0.027, 0.007, 0.003, and 0.047, respectively). Despite the differences between the two groups, digital models might be clinically suitable alternatives for plaster models. Pediatric dentists should carefully assess these differences, as a comprehensive evaluation would result in precise orthodontic treatment planning and favorable outcomes for young patients with mixed dentition.

Management options and long-term follow-ups for permanent double incisors: six to eleven-year case reports

BackgroundDouble teeth are dental anomalies that can lead to aesthetic and orthodontic problems.Case presentationThis report discusses two cases involving the multidisciplinary management of permanent maxillary left lateral incisors fused with a supernumerary tooth in two girls aged 9 and 10. Following intraoral and radiographic examinations, one was diagnosed with fusion, and the other was diagnosed with concrescence. The crown of the fused incisor was separated using a burs and extracted intraorally. The concrescent incisor was separated along its length using a laser and intentionally replanted extraorally. After a 6-year follow-up, no pathological signs were observed in the fused incisor. However, after an 11-year follow-up, external resorption was observed in the concrescent incisor.ConclusionsBoth incisors remained asymptomatic throughout the observation period. This case report highlights two different and effective methods employed to preserve the natural function, form, and aesthetics of double incisors.

Bracketless fixed orthodontic treatment with mandibular incisor extraction

As an alternative to the conventional fixed appliance that uses orthodontic brackets, a simple tube without a bonding base can be bonded by covering it with flowable composite resin. However, bracketless fixed treatment has been limited to non-extraction cases because rigid archwires cannot be used. In this report, a 23-year-old female patient presented with the chief complaint of the reopening of the maxillary lateral incisor extraction space and the development of mandibular anterior crowding during retention. She was orthodontically treated with the extraction of the maxillary right and left lateral incisors and mandibular left central incisor nine years ago. Spacing at the maxillary extraction site and mandibular crowding developed due to the lingual fixed retainer bond failure. She was diagnosed as skeletal Class I with 1/4-cusp dental Class II. The extraction of the mandibular right central incisor was planned to relieve the mandibular anterior crowding and increase the required overjet for retracting the maxillary central incisors to close the spacing. Simple tubes were bonded to the teeth instead of brackets. Stainless steel retraction overlay archwires were used to close the extraction space and apply Class II elastics. Overlays worked as a rigid archwire, preventing the bowing effect. After treatment, favorable occlusion was achieved. This case report demonstrates that bracketless fixed orthodontic treatment with simple tubes can be applied to mandibular incisor extraction cases with the aid of a rigid overlay archwire.

Surgical Management of Radicular Cyst with the Application of a Natural Platelet Concentrate and Ostoden: A Case Report

ABSTRACT The most frequent cystic lesions that affect the jaw are radicular cysts. The current case report describes the surgical management of a radicular cyst in the periapical region of maxillary central and lateral incisors, and highlights the efficacy of natural platelet concentrate [platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)] along with Ostoden bone graft material used for postoperative healing. A 46-year-old male patient presented to the department with swelling in the palatal aspect of the maxillary anterior region. On radiographic examination, a radiolucent periapical lesion was evident in relation to the left maxillary central and lateral incisor. In the maxillary anterior region, root canal therapy was performed, followed by periapical surgery, and PRF with Ostoden bone graft was placed in the surgical site to initiate the healing at a faster rate. The patient was recalled at follow-ups after 7 days, 3, 6, and 9 months. No symptoms such as pain, inflammation, or discomfort were observed during the review period.

A Case of Anterior Single Tooth Implant with Fractured Zirconia Abutment due to Trauma.

In recent years, a wide variety of materials have been used in dental implant treatment. In selecting the superstructures and abutments to be used it is important to consider their potential effect on the stability and durability of the planned implant. Excessive force applied to an implant during maintenance commonly results in complications, such as fracture of the superstructure or abutment, and loosening or fracture of the screws. This report describes a case of implant treatment for a 23-year-old man with esthetic disturbance due to trauma to the maxillary anterior teeth. The left maxillary central incisor could not be conserved due to this trauma, which had been caused by a traffic accident. After extraction, the tooth was restored with an anterior bridge. The crown of the left maxillary lateral incisor was fractured at the crown margin and, at the patient's request, implant treatment was selected as the restorative treatment for the missing tooth. A thorough preoperative examination was performed using placement simulation software. One titanium screw-type implant was placed in the maxillary left central incisor under local anesthesia. An all-ceramic crown with a zirconia frame was placed as a screw-fixed direct superstructure. At one year postoperatively, however, the superstructure and abutment became detached due to trauma. The fractured zirconia abutment was removed and replaced with a remanufactured abutment and superstructure. The patient has reported no subsequent dental complaint over the last 11 years. In this case, a surface analysis of the fractured zirconia abutment was performed. The scanned images revealed a difference in the fracture surfaces between the tensile and compressive sides, and electron probe microanalysis demonstrated the presence of titanium on the fracture surface. It was inferred that the hard zirconia abutment had scraped the titanium from the internal surface of the implant.

Interdisciplinary treatment for an adolescent with fusion of the left maxillary lateral and central incisors: A clinical report

The interdisciplinary treatment provided for a 12-year-old boy with fusion of his left central and lateral incisors and concomitant distal space loss is described. His treatment was initiated with orthodontic therapy followed by endodontic treatment of the fused tooth. A conservative zirconia and porcelain cantilevered bonded fixed dental prosthesis was then completed to replace his left lateral incisor.

Clinical Performance of Minimally Invasive Monolithic Ultratranslucent Zirconia Veneers: A Case Series up to Five Years of Follow-up

SUMMARY There is a lack of reports in the literature on the long-term clinical performance of ultratranslucent zirconia, especially considering its use in manufacturing monolithic veneers. The purpose of this case series is to describe the aesthetic treatment steps of three patients with minimally invasive ultratranslucent zirconia veneers and to report the clinical findings up to five years. Three patients (woman: 2, man: 1; mean age: 30 years) unsatisfied with their dental aesthetics sought dental treatment. The treatment plan involved cementing ultratranslucent zirconia veneers. Air-abrasion was performed on the internal surface of zirconia with alumina particles coated by silica (silicatization), followed by silane and adhesive applications for the adhesive cementation. All veneers were adhesively cemented to enamel with resin cement (Variolink Esthetic, Ivoclar). The patients were clinically evaluated annually considering the Ryge modified/ California Dental Association criteria. After a mean follow-up of 4.33 years (4-5 years), a survival rate of 100% was detected for the 28 minimally invasive ultratranslucent zirconia veneers cemented in the 3 patients. There were no absolute failures such as debonding, veneer fracture, or secondary caries. Superficial marginal discoloration was observed in one element (maxillary left lateral incisor) of one patient. Ultratranslucent zirconia is a viable option for manufacturing veneers due to its excellent clinical performance and longevity. However, further long-term clinical studies are essential to consolidate this material as an option for esthetic restorations.

The management of gingival fenestration: A series of three cases.

The aim of this article is to introduce three treatments for patients with gingival fenestration as a result of chronic apical periodontitis. Gingival fenestration is a relatively uncommon soft tissue lesion in which the root apex is exposed in the oral environment after the destruction of the overlying buccal bone plate and mucosa. At present, no clear etiology or treatment guidelines exist for gingival fenestration. This article reports three successfully treated cases of gingival fenestration associated with chronic periapical infection. This report can help contribute to treatment guidelines for gingival fenestration. All cases were treated with apicoectomy in conjunction with a connective tissue graft (CTG). According to the different conditions of the patients, we used some slightly different treatment methods during the operation. In case 1, we treated gingival fenestration in the mandibular left first premolar by endodontic therapy with root-end resection and retrograde filling and regenerative surgical therapy using a xenograft and CTG. In case 2, we treated gingival fenestration in the maxillary left lateral incisor by endodontic therapy with root-end resection and retrograde filling in vitro and regenerative surgical therapy using advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and CTG. In case 3, we treated gingival fenestration in the mandibular left second premolar by endodontic therapy with root-end resection and retrograde filling and regenerative surgical therapy using CTG. Endodontic treatment was combined with periodontal surgery to achieve predictable treatment results. After 13 to 25 months of follow-up, all cases showed that the gingival fenestration had healed well, and the patients had no discomfort. These three cases show the possibility of using apical excision combined with a CTG and/or bone graft/PRF in the treatment of gingival fenestration. Reporting these three cases may help advance the field of treatments for gingival fenestration.

Does the traditional or digital dental model measurement method affect the results?: A validation study

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy, reliability and reproducibility of measurements made on digital models obtained using OrthoAnalyzer (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) and Materialize 3 matic (MIMICS , Leuven, Belgium) software by comparing them with measurements made on dental plaster models.
 Methods: The teeth of 50 individuals were measured and plaster models were obtained. In addition, digital images were obtained from the patients with Trios intraoral scanner. A total of 30 linear measurements were made using OrthoAnalyzer and Materialize 3 matic software, including the mesiodistal width of the teeth, arch perimeter, intercanine and intermolar distances. All measurements were made by two different examiners. For the first and second measurements of the first examiner, intraexaminer reliability was calculated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), two way mixed model, consistency type. 
 Results: The largest mean difference between Materialize 3 matic and caliper measurements was -0.136 mm in maxillary right first premolar and maxillary left lateral incisor. The smallest mean difference was 0.0029 mm in the mandibular left lateral incisor. In transverse measurements, the largest mean difference was found in the upper intercanine distance of 0.117 mm, and the smallest mean difference was 0.0086 mm in the upper intermolar distance. The largest mean difference between OrthoAnalyzer and caliper measurements was 0.107 mm in the maxillary right lateral incisor, and the smallest mean difference was 0.0049 mm in the maxillary left lateral incisor. 
 Conclusions: Linear distance measurements with three-dimensional digital models are a valid, reliable and reproducible method compared to plaster models.

Successful non-surgical endodontic management of type III dens invaginatus by using cone-beam computed tomography: a case report

Dens invaginatus (DI) is a rare malformation of a tooth caused by the invagination of tooth crown before biological mineralization occurs. In DI type III invagination extends beyond the cementum-enamel junction, with the second foramen extending into the periapical tissues or into the periapical area. DI type III may pose real challenges for the clinician, especially when endodontic treatment is required. Objective: The present case report describes the successful non-surgical endodontic management of a tooth with DI type III with the aid of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Case report: A 20-year-old male patient was referred for endodontic evaluation and treatment of the left maxillary lateral incisor (tooth #22), which presented a darker and unusual crown shape. Periapical radiography and CBCT scans revealed the presence of a type III DI, and a larger periapical lesion associated with external root resorption and discontinuous buccal cortical plate Results: The diagnosis of Oehlers type III DI with asymptomatic apical periodontitis was established, and non-surgical endodontic treatment was initiated. After 5 months, a decrease in the periapical lesion and arrest of external resorption was detected. The root canals were then filled, and the tooth restored. At the 3-years follow-up, clinical and imaging assessments revealed successful outcome of the treatment. Conclusion: CBCT is an inestimable tool for non-surgical endodontic management of teeth with complex internal anatomy, such as DI type III with associated large periapical lesion.

Is Orthodontic Treatment an Etiologic Factor for Altered Passive Eruption? A Clinical Study and Systematic Review

This research aims to investigate the relationship between orthodontic treatment (OT) and altered passive eruption (APE). Materials and Methods: A case–control study was carried out among the dentistry students at Jazan University. A total of 21 students were recruited for the case group and 20 others for the control group. Variables were measured on the maxillary incisor teeth. They included an image analysis of the teeth width-to-height (W/H) ratio, a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis of buccal bone thickness (BCT), and the distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the bone crest (BC) (CEJ–BC). In addition, a systematic review was performed following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Prominent literature databases, including Medline/PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, Saudi Digital Library, and Google Scholar, were searched for articles published before November 2022 on two main concepts (APE and orthodontics). Quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS), and the certainty of evidence was assessed using the grading of recommendations assessment development and evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: A total of 164 teeth were evaluated. No statistical differences were observed in the W/H ratio and BCT between the two groups. A significant increase in the CEJ–BC distance in the right and left maxillary lateral incisors was observed for people who had undergone OT (p ≤ 0.002 and 0.001, respectively). In the systematic review, two articles were included for qualitative synthesis. One of the included studies showed an increase in the post-orthodontics clinical crown length of the maxillary anterior teeth. Another study reported no difference in the prevalence of APE between orthodontically treated and untreated people. Conclusion: This research concludes that OT might not be an etiological factor for APE. However, more clinical and radiological studies must be conducted to arrive at decisive conclusions.

Management of external cervical resorption with internal approach: 18 months of follow-up

Introduction: External cervical resorption (ECR) in advance stages may have a probable pulp involvement. In some of these cases, the accessibility of the resorptive process can be performed by an intraradicular approach. Aim: To report the management of an ECR, classified as Class 2cp according to Patel classification, with an internal approach. Case report: A 22-year-old male patient presented a complaint of dentin hypersensitivity related to left maxillary lateral incisor and reported a history of previous dental trauma. Based on the clinical, radiographic and tomographic findings, the left maxillary lateral incisor was diagnosed as symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with ECR class 2cp of Patel classification. The patient was scheduled for endodontic treatment, with an internal approach, and repair of the resorbed area. Intracanal dressing of calcium hydroxide paste was used in the root canal and resorption gaps. The root canal filling was performed in two steps: obturation of the apical and middle third with gutta-percha by lateral condensation technique and obturation of the cervical third and filling the resorbed area with MTA. After 18 months signs and symptoms compatible with success were observed, and the tomographic and radiographic images suggested a successful endodontic treatment and evolutionary process of repair of bone and mineralized dental tissues. Conclusion: Patel class 2cp ECR treatment through an internal approach, including conventional endodontic treatment and recovery of the reabsorbed area with calcium hydroxide and MTA is a viable treatment option, but may cause tooth discoloration.

Position of digitally guided implants in completely edentulous maxillae by using a modified double-scan and overlap of three digital surface protocol

Statement of problemIn patients with a completely edentulous maxilla, the variability in resilience and mucosal thickness and the lack of teeth and rigid supporting structures may lead to poor adaptation of the surgical guide and significant variation in the definitive implant position. Whether a modified double-scan technique with overlap of surfaces will improve implant placement is unclear. PurposeThe purpose of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional position and the correlation of 6 dental implants in participants with a completely edentulous maxilla using a mucosa-supported flapless surgical guide designed with 3 matched digital surfaces obtained with a modified double-scan protocol. Material and methodsDental implants were installed with an all-on-6 protocol in the edentulous maxilla of participants at the Santa Cruz Public Hospital, Chile. A stereolithographic mucosa-supported template was fabricated from a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan made with a prosthesis with 8 radiopaque ceramic spheres inserted and by scanning the same prosthesis with an intraoral scanner. The mucosa was obtained by digitally casting the relining of the removable complete denture in the design software program. After 4 months, a second CBCT scan was obtained to evaluate the position of the installed implants measured at 3 locations: apical, coronal, platform depth, and angulation. Differences in position between the 6 implants in the completely edentulous maxilla and their linear correlation at the measured points were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman correlation tests (α=.05). ResultsSixty implants were installed in 10 participants (age 54.3 ±8.2 years; 7 women). The average deviation in the apical axis was 1.02 ±0.9 mm, coronal 0.76 ±0.74 mm, platform depth 0.92 ±0.8 mm, and the major axis angulation of the 6 implants was 2.92 ±3.65 degrees. The implant in the maxillary left lateral incisor region had the most significant deviation in apical and angular points (P<.05). A linear correlation between apical-to-coronal deviations and apical-to-angular deviations was observed for all implants (P<.05). ConclusionsA stereolithographic mucosa-supported guide designed with the overlap of 3 digital surfaces had average dental implant position values similar to those reported by systematic reviews and meta-analyses. In addition, implant position varied based on the location of the implant installation in the edentulous maxilla.

Cemental Tear Associated With Upper Left Canine – Case Report

This study aims to report an unusual clinical case of cemental tear in the upper left canine, presenting the clinical and radiographic characteristics of the lesion, predisposing factors, differential diagnosis, treatment and 12-month postoperative control. A 73-year-old male patient was referred for an apicectomy of the left maxillary lateral incisor. After the procedure the patient still had a capsulated intraosseous lesion at the apex communicating with the left maxillary canine. It was decided to place an immediate implant in that same region, which was later lost, and even so, the fistulated lesion continued to recur. After several attempts of curettage and total removal of the lesion the patient still presented it frequently. Through a Cone Beam Tomography, the diagnosis of cemental tear in the upper left canine was defined and its extraction was then performed. After the extraction, maintenance consultations were carried out in the subsequent periods of 3 months, 6 months and 12 months, where good bone healing was found and there was no more sign of infection. After 12 months of clinical follow-up, the surgical treatment proved to be quite efficient and, even without the placement of any type of biomaterial, bone neoformation could be observed in the region and there was no recurrence of the lesion.

Comparison of 2 different wear protocols of vacuum-formed retainers with respect to the conventional parameters and 3-dimensional superimpositional analysis

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 2 different wear protocols of vacuum-formed retainers (VFR) in terms of angular and linear displacement of teeth using 3-dimensional (3D) superimpositional analysis and conventional model parameters. The study was conducted on 2 groups, each consisting of 17 patients randomly assigned to the part-time group or full-time group of VFR wearing after a nonextraction treatment. While conventional model measurements were assessed on 3D dental casts, 3D tooth movements were evaluated by digitally superimposed scans of casts acquired at 4-time points (debonding and 1, 3, and 6 months after debonding). Regarding conventional parameters, the difference between time-dependent changes among the groups was tested using the nonparametric Brunner-Langer and parametric linear mixed models. Considering 3D measurements, comparisons of groups were made using the Student t tests. There were no significant intergroup differences regarding conventional model parameters at any time (P>0.05). Significant intergroup differences were observed regarding angular and linear relapses in the labiolingual directionfor maxillary and mandibular incisors, as well as the rotational relapses for maxillary left canine and mandibular right lateral incisor, which were greater in the part-time group in the first month and at the end of 6months (P<0.05). Conventional model parameters appear to play a debatable role in evaluating the effectiveness of a retainer wear regimen. Three-dimensional analysis of tooth movements revealed that part-time VFR wear was less effective in retaining labiolingual and rotational tooth movements for the first month after debonding.

Patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and sexual dimorphism

BackgroundSex dimorphism has been implicated in oral health differences and the pathogenesis of oral diseases, such as tooth agenesis, periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss. Tooth agenesis (TA) is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans, and its prevalence and patterns are different across ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypes and sex-associated patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis (TA) in Thai dental patients.MethodsOne thousand ninety panoramic radiographs were examined. One hundred and one subjects (37 males, 64 females, 15–20 years-old) with nonsyndromic TA were evaluated. Differences in TA prevalence between groups were analyzed using the chi-square or Fisher exact test.ResultsThe TA prevalence, excluding third molars, was 9.3% and more frequently found in the mandible compared with the maxilla. The maxilla demonstrated a higher prevalence of first premolar agenesis than the mandible (P = 0.012), while the mandible had a higher prevalence of second premolar agenesis than the maxilla (P = 0.031). There were significantly more males missing one tooth than females, however, there were more females missing two or more teeth than males (P = 0.042). A missing maxillary left lateral incisor was significantly more frequent in males (P = 0.019), while a missing mandibular right lateral incisor was more frequent in females (P = 0.025). In females, the pattern of two mandibular lateral incisors agenesis was the most common and significantly present in females more than males (P = 0.015). In contrast, the pattern of one mandibular left lateral incisor agenesis was only observed in males and significantly found in males more than females (P = 0.047).ConclusionsWe demonstrate sex-associated differences in nonsyndromic tooth agenesis. The prevalence of single tooth agenesis was higher in males, while that of two or more teeth agenesis was higher in females. We found different patterns of lateral incisor agenesis between males and females.

Root canal filling material in periapical lesions: A polarized and fluorescent light microscopy case series

Overfilling of the root canal can cause foreign body reactions and lead to pathophysiological responses. The aim of the study was to investigate the morphological properties of filling materials associated with periapical lesions through light, polarized, and fluorescent light microscopy analysis. This study reports two cases of root canal overfilling associated with unsuccessful endodontic procedures. In case #1, a 36-year-old woman complained of persistent pain in the region of tooth maxillary right first premolar, after extraction. Clinically, the patient was sensitive to any contact in the region. On radiography, a radiopaque area of 4 mm was observed in the apical region. In case #2, a 35-year-old man reported discomfort when pressing the left nostril, with a history of extraction of tooth maxillary left lateral incisor. Clinically, painless and immobile edema was observed in the overlying region. Radiographically, a radiolucent image with defined edges and a radiopaque dot within the radiolucent was visualized. In histopathology, case #1 was conclusive with foreign body granuloma, while case #2 with residual cyst. In both cases, an excisional biopsy of the lesion was performed, with complete resolution of the cases after the follow-up period. Recognizing the morphological and optical properties of endodontic lesions mixed with endodontic restorative materials is essential for an accurate and reliable histopathological report.
