Experimental Investigation of the Matrix Pore Size Distribution and Inner Surface Fractal Dimension of Different-Structure High Rank Coals.

To investigate the nanopore characteristics of different-structure high-rank coal matrices, four samples were collected from the Zhaozhuang Mine, a typical mine highly prone to coal and gas outbursts in Shanxi Province, China, and the nanopore size distribution was measured using a lowtemperature nitrogen adsorption method for these four samples. Based on the nitrogen adsorption isotherms, the inner surface fractal dimensions of micropores, meso- and macropores, and full-scale matrix pores were estimated using a Frenkel-Halsey-Hill (FFH) fractal model, and the relationships between the fractal dimensions and pore parameters were discussed. The inner surface of the high-rank coal matrix is heterogeneous. The inner surface fractal dimensions of micropores (D1) and full-scale matrix pores (DT) can be arranged in a descending sequence for the differentstructure coals: mylonitized coal > granulated coal > cataclastic coal > intact coal, while the inner surface fractal dimensions of meso- and macropores (D₂) are in an ascending sequence. With the increasing deformation degree of coals, some macropores and mesopores are transformed into smaller pores, such as micropores; the total pore volume (PV) and total specific surface area (SSA) increase; the SSA percentage and PV percentage of meso- and micropores increase; and those of macropores decrease. The average pore width (APW) is positively correlated with D₂ and negatively correlated with D1 and DT. The tectonic deformation enhances the irregularity of micropores and the heterogeneity of the whole coal matrix pores and decreases the inner surface roughness of meso- and macropores.

Experimental study on imbibition displacement mechanisms of two-phase fluid using micromodel: Fracture network, distribution of pore size, and matrix construction

In this study, the effect of different parameters on the fluid transport in a fractured micromodel has been investigated. All experiments in this study have been conducted in a glass micromodel. Since the state of wetting is important in the micromodel, the wetting experiments have been conducted to determine the state of wetting in the micromodel. The used micromodel was wet by water and non-wet regarding normal decane. The fracture network, distribution of pore size, matrix construction, and injection rate are the most important parameters affecting the process. Therefore, the influence of these parameters was studied using five different patterns (A to E). The obtained results from pattern A showed that increasing water injection the flow rate results in both higher rate of imbibition and higher ultimate recovery. Pattern B, which was characterized with higher porosity and permeability, was employed to study the effect of matrix pore size distribution on the imbibition process. Compared to pattern A, a higher normal decane production was observed in this pattern. Patterns C and D were designed to understand the impact of lateral fractures on the displacement process. Higher ultimate recoveries were obtained in these patterns. A system of matrix-fracture was designed (pattern E) to evaluate water injection performance in a multi-block system. Injection of water with the flow rate of 0.01 cc/min could produce 15% of the oil available in the system. While in the test with the flow rate of 0.1 cc/min, a normal decane recovery of 0.28 was achieved.

Determination of Matrix Pore Size Distribution in Fractured Clayey Till and Assessment of Matrix Migration of Dechlorinating Bacteria

ABSTRACTThe pore structure and pore size distribution (PSD) in the clayey till matrix from three Danish field sites were investigated by image analysis to assess the matrix migration of dechlorinating bacteria in clayey till. Clayey till samples had a wide range of pore sizes, with diameters of 0.1–100 μm, and two typical peaks of pore sizes were observed in all clayey till samples. A large area fraction of the individual pores centered around 2 μm in diameter, and another fraction centered around 20 μm. In general, the typical macropore sizes (1 μm < D < 30 μm) in clayey tills determined by image analysis account for approximately 30–60% of the total porosity (20–26%), which is within the range of those reported for clayey soils and other clayey deposits in the literature. The pore size, PSD, and interconnectivity of pores in clayey till matrix may play an important role in evaluation of the migration of dechlorinating bacteria between fractures and clayey till matrix. Dechlorinating bacteria are small (0.3–1 μm) and may have the ability to morphologically adapt to space constraints. The results in this paper in combination with recent field data indicate that the migration of dechlorinating bacteria in fractures and into the clayey till matrix is likely, which is of significance for natural and stimulated degradation of chlorinated solvents by reductive dechlorination in clayey tills.

Establishment and application of logging saturation interpretation equation in vuggy reservoirs

Vuggy reservoirs are the most common, albeit important heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs in China. However, saturation calculations using logging data are not well developed, whereas Archie method is more common. In this study, electrical conduction in a vuggy reservoir is theoretically analyzed to establish a new saturation equation for vuggy reservoirs. We found that vugs have a greater effect on saturation than resistivity, which causes inflection in the rock-electricity curve. Using single-variable experiments, we evaluated the effects of vug size, vug number, and vug distribution on the rock-electricity relation. Based on the general saturation model, a saturation equation for vuggy reservoirs is derived, and the physical significance of the equation parameters is discussed based on the seepage-electricity similarity. The equation parameters depend on the pore structure, and vugs and matrix pore size distribution. Furthermore, a method for calculating the equation parameters is proposed, which uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data to calculate the capillary pressure curve. Field application of the proposed equation and parameter derivation method shows good match between calculated and experimental results, with an average absolute error of 5.8%.

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose scaffolds and their physicochemical effects on partial thickness wound healing

This study investigated critical physicochemical attributes of low (LV), medium (MV) and high molecular weight (HV) sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) scaffolds in partial thickness wound healing. SCMC scaffolds were prepared by solvent-evaporation technique. Their in vitro erosion, moisture affinity, morphology, tensile strength, polymer molecular weight and carboxymethyl substitution, and in vivo wound healing profiles were determined. Inferring from rat wound size, re-epithelialization and histological profiles, wound healing progressed with HV scaffold>LV–MV scaffold>control with no scaffold. The transepidermal water loss (TEWL) from wound of rats treated by control>HV scaffold>LV–MV scaffold. HV scaffold had the highest tensile strength of all matrices and was resistant to erosion in simulated wound fluid. In spite of constituting small nanopores, it afforded a substantial TEWL than MV and LV scaffolds from wound across an intact matrix through its low moisture affinity characteristics. The HV scaffold can protect moisture loss without its excessive accumulation at wound bed which hindered re-epithelialization process. Regulation of transepidermal water movement and wound healing by scaffolds was governed by SCMC molecular weight instead of its carboxymethyl substitution degree or matrix pore size distribution, with large molecular weight HV preferred over lower molecular weight samples.

Influence of Microsilica Content on the Slag Resistance of Castables Containing Porous Corundum–Spinel Aggregates

Corrosion of five corundum–spinel castables containing the same porous aggregates and different matrices by converter slag (C/S=3) was conducted using the static crucible test through the counting pixels method, XRD, SEM, EDAX, and so on. It was found that the corrosion and penetration resistance depend on the microsilica content. Microsilica content strongly affects liquid phase formation in the matrix, changes the porosity, pore size distribution of matrix, and viscosity of slag penetrated, and thus affects its corrosion and penetration resistance. Increasing microsilica, decreasing the porosity, or increasing the viscosity of the penetrating slag improves, whereas increasing the pore size or liquid content reduces the penetration and corrosion resistance. The penetration resistance increased abruptly with an increase of the microsilica content from 0.65 to 1.95 wt%, but changed slightly with increase of the microsilica content from 1.95 to 3.90 wt%. The corrosion resistance increased with an increase of the microsilica content from 0 to 2.60 wt%, but slightly decreased with a further increase of the microsilica content to 3.90 wt%. 1.95–2.60 wt% microsilica leads to a compromise between low corrosion and low penetration.
