Spectroscopic Identification of Trifluorosilylphosphinidene and Isomeric Phosphasilene and Silicon Trifluorophosphine Complex.

The perfluorinated silylphosphinidene, F3SiP, in the triplet ground state is generated by the reaction of laser-ablated silicon atoms with PF3 in solid neon and argon matrices. The reactions proceed with the initial formation of a silicon trifluorophosphine complex, F3PSi, in the triplet ground state, and a more stable inserted phosphasilene, FPSiF2, in the singlet ground state upon deposition. The trifluorosilylphosphinidene was formed through F-migration reactions of FPSiF2 and F3PSi following a two-state mechanism under irradiation with visible light (λ = 470 nm) and full arc light (λ > 220 nm), respectively. High-level quantum-chemical methods support the identification of F3PSi, FPSiF2, and F3SiP by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy.

Observation of the Water-HNSO2 Complex.

Sulfamic acid (NH2SO3H, SFA) is supposed to play an important role in aerosol new particle formation (NPF) in the atmosphere, and its formation mainly arises from the SO3-NH3 reaction system in which weakly bonded donor-acceptor complexes such as SO3···NH3 and isomeric HNSO2···H2O have been proposed as the key intermediates. In this study, we reveal the first spectroscopic observation of HNSO2···H2O in two forms in a solid Ar matrix at 10 K. The major form consists of two intermolecular H bonds by forming a six-membered ring structure with a calculated dissociation energy of 7.6 kcal mol-1 at the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The less stable form resembles SO3···H2O in containing a pure chalcogen bond (S···O) with a dissociation energy of 7.2 kcal mol-1. The characterization of HNSO2···H2O with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by D- and 18O-isotope labeling and quantum chemical calculations.

3-Fluoro-2H-azirine: Generation, Characterization, and Photochemistry.

The elusive 3-fluoro-2H-azirine, cyclic NCH2CF, has been generated through the stepwise decomposition of the acryloyl azide CH2CFC(O)N3 in an N2-matrix at 10 K. The characterization of cyclic NCH2CF with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by 15N isotope labeling and the calculations with density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. Upon irradiation at 193 nm, cyclic NCH2CF undergoes ring opening by forming the more stable nitrile isomer CH2FCN. In contrast to the photodecomposition reactions, the high-vacuum flash pyrolysis of CH2CFC(O)N3 in the gas phase at 500 °C yields the Curtius rearrangement product CH2CFNCO along with secondary fragmentation to the atmospherically relevant fluorocarbonyl radical (FCO) and cyanomethyl radical (CH2CN). Calculations on the potential energy profile for the decomposition reactions of CH2CFC(O)N3 demonstrate that the excessive energy, arising from the highly exothermic Curtius rearrangement of the azide, plays a key role in driving further dissociation reactions of CH2CFNCO by overcoming the formidable barriers (>50 kcal mol-1) under the pyrolysis conditions.

FP(μ-N)2 S: A Sulfur-Pnictogen Four-Membered Ring with 6π Electrons.

The new 6π-electron four-membered ring compound 3-fluoro-1λ2 ,2,4,3λ3 -thiadiazaphosphetidine, FP(μ-N)2 S, has been generated in the gas phase through high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of thiophosphoryl diazide, FP(S)(N3 )2 , at 1000 K. Subsequent isolation of FP(μ-N)2 S in cryogenic matrices (Ar, Ne, and N2 ) allows its characterization with matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy by combination with 15 N-isotope labeling and computations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/VTZ-F12 level of theory. Upon visible-light irradiation at 550 nm, this cyclic compound undergoes ring-opening to the thiazyl isomer FPNSN, followed by dissociation to FP and SN2 under subsequent UV-irradiation at 365 nm. In sharp contrast to the square planar structure for the isolobal four-membered ring S2 N2 , a puckered structure with significant biradical character has been found for FP(μ-N)2 S.

Spectroscopic identification of the ammonia-mercapto radical complex.

The elusive hydrogen-bonded radical complex (˙SH⋯NH3) consisting of ammonia (NH3) and a mercapto radical (˙SH) has been generated through the 193 nm laser photolysis of the molecular complex between NH3 and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in solid Ar- and N2-matrixes at 10 K. The identification of ˙SH⋯NH3 with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy is supported by 15N- and D-isotope labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. In line with a large red shift of -172.2 cm-1 for the frequency of the S-H stretching mode observed in ˙SH⋯NH3 (cf. free ˙SH), the radical ˙SH acts as a hydrogen donor, and NH3 acts as an acceptor. According to the calculations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level, the SH⋯N bonded structure ˙SH⋯NH3 (binding energy De = 3.9 kcal mol-1) is more stable than the isomeric amidogen radical complex HSH⋯˙NH2 (De = 2.8 kcal mol-1) by 16.6 kcal mol-1. This is in sharp contrast to the photochemistry of the closely related HOH⋯NH3 complex, since the water-amidogen radical complex HOH⋯˙NH2 (De = 5.1 kcal mol-1) was generated under similar photolysis conditions, whereas the ammonia-hydroxyl radical complex ˙OH⋯NH3 (De = 7.9 kcal mol-1) is higher in energy by 9.3 kcal mol-1.

Matrix-isolation vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy of chiral 1-phenyl-1-propanol.

Matrix Isolation IR and VCD spectroscopy is used to characterize the self-aggregation of the title compound. It is shown that only the IR spectral region of the OH-/CH-stretching modes is sensitive to hydrogen bonding interactions and that the fingerprint region is not notably affected. In contrast, some characteristic VCD spectral features can be identified in the fingerprint region.

Octa-coordination in complexes of lanthanides with N2 confirmed by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations

Although the pure existence of binary dinitrogen-lanthanide metal complexes could be established some twenty years ago as unstable species in cryogenic matrices, the controversy about the highest possible coordination number (hexa- or octa-coordinated) prevails up to today. In this study lanthanide (Ln) dinitrogen complexes, synthesized in neat dinitrogen cryogenic matrices at less than 10 K, were investigated by infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. Surprisingly, only some of the thermally evaporated metals react directly with N2 to yield compound, while in most cases isolated metal atoms are observed in the neat dinitrogen matrix – which react upon photoexcitation. The formed complexes were identified on the basis of the characteristic shifts of the N2 stretching frequency by assistance from DFT calculations. The latter results facilitated also a revision of related literature data. Our joint experimental-theoretical analysis confirmed the formation of octa-coordinated end-on Ln(NN)8 complexes in cryogenic matrices.

Curtius-Type Rearrangement of Sulfinyl Azides: A Matrix Isolation and Computational Study.

The highly unstable methyl sulfinyl azide, CH3S(O)N3, has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. In the gas phase, CH3S(O)N3 decomposes quickly at room temperature (300 K) with an estimated half-life (t1/2) of 7 min. Upon irradiation at 266 nm in cryogenic Ar (10 K) and Ne (3 K) matrices, the azide extrudes molecular nitrogen by yielding the novel sulfinyl nitrene intermediate CH3S(O)N in the closed-shell singlet ground state, which has been characterized with matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Prolonged irradiation at 266 nm causes Curtius rearrangement of the nitrene to form N-sulfinylamine CH3NSO and S-nitrosothiol CH3SNO. By high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) at 800 K, CH3S(O)N3 also decomposes and furnishes CH3S(O)N with minor fragmentation products HNSO and CH2 in the gas phase. A similar photo-induced Curtius-type rearrangement of trifluoromethyl sulfinyl azide CF3S(O)N3 to CF3NSO and CF3SNO has also been observed in matrices. According to the theoretical calculations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G (3df,3pd) level of theory, the rearrangement of CH3S(O)N3 prefers a stepwise pathway by initial formation of the nitrene intermediate CH3S(O)N. In line with the thermal persistence of CH3S(O)N in the gas phase, the barriers for its subsequent rearrangement are higher than 30 kcal mol-1.

Investigation of [CHCl3-CH3OH] complex using matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculation: Evidence of hydrogen- and halogen-bonding interaction

• First molecular level investigation of [CHCl 3 -CH 3 OH] complex using Matrix isolation FTIR. • Dimers are characterised by C-H—O, O-H—Cl hydrogen bond and C-Cl—O halogen bond. • First experimental evidence of formation of halogen bond in CHCl 3 . • C-H—O hydrogen bonded complex is also identified in the low temperature matrix. • Structure, relative stability, and nature of interactions are calculated. Mixture of CHCl 3 -CH 3 OH is a popular non-aqueous solvent mixture that exhibits strong synergistic solvation. The specific interaction between the CHCl 3 and CH 3 OH is investigated using 1:1 complex in N 2 matrix along with electronic structure calculation. Three different type of interactions are possible between CHCl 3 and CH 3 OH at the molecular level: C-H · · · O hydrogen bond, O-H · · · Cl hydrogen bond, and C-Cl · · · O halogen bond. One C-H · · · O hydrogen bond minimum, two O-H · · · Cl hydrogen bond minima, and one C-Cl · · · O halogen bond minimum are obtained on the [CHCl 3 -CH 3 OH] dimer potential energy surface. Formation of C-H · · · O hydrogen bonded and C-Cl · · · O halogen bonded 1:1 complex of [CHCl 3 -CH 3 OH] in N 2 matrix is confirmed using experimental and simulated IR spectra. The outcome of the current work would help to explain the specific interactions present in CHCl 3 and CH 3 OH binary solvent mixture and to estimate the responses of such non-aqueous solvent mixture.

Photolytic insertion of carbon monoxide into nitrosyl chloride: formation of nitrosoformyl chloride.

Nitrosocarbonyls are exotic intermediates that remain scarcely characterized. By UV photolysis (365 nm) of nitrosyl chloride (ClNO) embedded in solid CO ice at 20 K, the elusive nitrosoformyl chloride (ClC(O)NO) has been synthesized via CO-insertion into the Cl-N bond in ClNO. The characterization of ClC(O)NO with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy is supported by 13C and 15N isotope labeling and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(3df) level of theory. Upon subsequent laser irradiation at 266 nm, CO-elimination in ClC(O)NO occurs by reformation of ClNO. In line with the calculated potential energy surface for ClC(O)NO at the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311+G(3df) level, the observed IR frequencies and the corresponding isotopic shifts coincide with the calculated values for the lowest-energy planar conformer, in which the CO and NO moities adopt trans configuration with respect to the C-N bond. Furthermore, the CO-insertion in ClNO involves a stepwise pathway by first homolytic cleavage of the Cl-N bond in ClNO (→ Cl˙ + ˙NO), followed by successive CO-trapping (CO + Cl˙ → ClCO˙) and radical combination (ClCO˙ + ˙NO → ClC(O)NO) inside the solid CO-matrix cages.

Wavelength-dependent photochemistry of a salicylimine derivative studied with cryogenic and ultrafast spectroscopy approaches.

Salicylimines are versatile compounds in which an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and torsional motions may set in upon photoexcitation. Here, we study N-(α-phenylethyl)salicylimine (PESA) to elucidate how the photochemical reaction pathways depend on the excitation wavelength and to what extent the relative photoproduct distribution can be steered towards a desired species. DFT structure and potential energy calculations disclose that the most stable ground-state conformer is an enol species and that the photodynamics may proceed differently depending on the excited state that is reached. With matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, the predominance of the enol conformer of PESA is confirmed. Illumination of the cryogenic sample with different wavelengths shifts the ratio of enol and keto products, and by sequential irradiation a selective re- and depopulation is possible. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy further reveals that also at room temperature, the outcome of the photoreaction depends on excitation wavelength, and in combination with the calculations, it can be rationalized that the decisive step occurs within the first hundred femtoseconds. Since the ultrafast dynamics mostly match those of similar salicylimines, our findings might also apply to those systems and provide additional insight into their reported sensitivity on excitation energy.

Fluoromethylsulfinyl radicals: spectroscopic characterization and photoisomerization via intramolecular hydrogen shift.

Two new sulfinyl radicals, CHF2SO˙ and CH2FSO˙, have been generated in the gas phase through homolytic cleavage of the weak S-S bonds in disulfane oxides CHF2S(O)SCF3 and CH2FS(O)SCF3 by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) at ca. 500 °C. The IR spectroscopy characterization of the two fluoromethylsulfinyl radicals in solid N2 (10 K), Ar (10 K), and Ne (3 K) matrices reveals the presence of two conformers for CHF2SO˙ (gauche and cis) and one conformer for CH2FSO˙ (gauche). Upon 266 nm laser irradiation, these radicals undergo both isomerization and decomposition in the matrices. In addition to the dominant formation of the elusive oxathiyl radicals CHF2OS˙ (gauche and cis) and CH2FOS˙ (gauche) via 1,2-alkyl migration, two higher-energy carbon-centered radicals ˙CF2SOH and ˙CHFSOH bearing similar molecular structures to hydroperoxyalkyl radicals (˙QOOH) form via intramolecular 1,3-hydrogen shift in the two sulfinyl radicals. Additionally, the involvement of 1,3-hydrogen shift in CHF2OS˙ and CH2FOS˙ is also indicated by the observation of the fragmentation species. The identification of these radicals by matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy is aided by the quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. The stability of the isomers of the two sulfinyl radicals CHF2SO˙ and CH2FSO˙ has been discussed according to the experimental observations and also based on the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) calculated energy profiles.

Spectroscopic Characterization of HSO2• and HOSO• Intermediates Involved in SO2 Geoengineering.

Sulfur-containing radicals HSO2• and HOSO• are key intermediates involved in stratospheric sulfur geoengineering by SO2 injection. The spectroscopic characterization and photochemistry of both radicals are crucial to understanding the chemical impact of SO2 chemistry in the stratosphere. On the basis of the efficient generation of HOSO• by flash pyrolysis of gaseous sulfinic acid, CHF2S(O)OH, a strong absorption is observed at 270 nm along with a shoulder up to 350 nm for HOSO• isolated in low-temperature noble gas matrixes (Ar and Ne). These mainly arise from the excitations from the ground state (X2A) to the C2A/D2A and A2A/B2A states, respectively. Upon a 266 nm laser irradiation, the broad absorption band in the range 320-500 nm for HSO2• appears, and it corresponds to the combination of three excitations from the X2A state to the first (A2A), second (B2A), and third (C2A) excited states. Assignment of the UV-vis spectra is consistent with the photochemistry of HOSO• and HSO2• as observed by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and also by the agreement with high-level ab initio calculations.

An investigation on the structure and group vibrations of balenine molecule by matrix isolation IR spectroscopy, DFT and MP2 based calculations

Stable conformers of neutral balenine were scanned through molecular dynamics simulations and energy minimizations using Allinger’s MM2 force field. For each of the found minimum-energy conformers, geometry optimization and thermochemistry calculations were performed by using B3LYP, MP2, G3MP2B3 methods, 6-31G(d), 6–311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pvTZ basis sets. The calculation results have indicated that balenine has about twenty stable conformers whose relative energies are in the range of 0–9.5 kcal/mol. Three of these are thought to provide the major contribution to matrix isolation IR spectra of the molecule. Our solvent calculations using the polarized continuum model revealed the stable zwitterion structures which are predicted to dominate IR spectra of balenine in water and heavy water (D2O) solvents. Pulay’s SQM-FF method was used in scaling of the harmonic force constants and vibrational spectral data calculated for the neutral and zwitterion structures. These refined calculation data together with those obtained from anharmonic frequency calculations enabled us to correctly interpret the matrix isolation IR spectrum of balenine and the tautomerism-based changes observed in its KBr IR and solution (D2O) IR spectra. The results revealed the crucial role of conformation and zwitterionic tautomerism on the structure and vibrational spectral data of the molecule.

Photoreaction of 2-chlorothiophenol studied by low-temperature matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy with DFT calculation

The photoreactions of 2-chlorothiophenol are investigated using matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculation at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. In a Ne matrix, 2,4-cyclopentadien-1-ylidenemethanethione, a five-membered-ring thioketene compound, is identified as the major photoproduct of a reaction similar to Wolff rearrangement. The reaction intermediate is spectroscopically detected as benzothiirene, which is produced from the reactant under UV ( λ ≥ 275 nm) irradiation and is then converted to the thioketene under λ ≥ 325 nm irradiation. Moreover, the complex of benzothiirene and HCl changes into 4-chloro-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1-thione under irradiation at λ ≥ 325 nm. By contrast, UV irradiation of 2-chlorothiophenol in an Ar matrix yields primarily 4-chloro-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1-thione via its isomer 2-chloro-2,4-cyclohexadiene-1-thione.

Intermediates of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation on Praseodymium Monoxide Molecules: Insights from Matrix-Isolation IR Spectroscopy and Quantum-Chemical Calculations.

Identifying reaction intermediates in gas-phase investigations will provide understanding for the related catalysts in fundamental aspects including bonding interactions of the reaction species, oxidation states (OSs) of the anchored atoms, and reaction mechanisms. Herein, carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by praseodymium monoxide (PrO) molecules has been investigated as a model reaction in solid argon using matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. Two reaction intermediates, OPr(η1-CO) and OPr(η2-CO), have been trapped and characterized in argon matrixes. The intermediate OPr(η2-CO) shows an extremely low C-O stretching band at 1624.5 cm-1. Quantum-chemistry studies indicate that the bonding in OPr(η1-CO) is described as "donor-acceptor" interactions conforming to the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. However, the bonding in OPr(η2-CO) results evidently from a combination of dominant ionic forces and normal Lewis "acid-base" interactions. The electron density of the singly occupied bonding orbital is strongly polarized to the CO fragment in OPr(η2-CO). Electronic structure analysis suggests that the two captured species exhibit Pr(III) OSs. Besides, the pathways of CO oxidation have been discussed.

Vibrational spectrum and photochemistry of phosphaketene HPCO.

The vibrational spectra of the simplest phosphaketene HPCO and its isotopologue DPCO in solid Ar-matrices at 12.0 K have been analyzed with the aid of the computations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level using configuration-selective vibrational configuration interaction (VCI). In addition to the four IR fundamentals, four overtone and ten combination bands have been unambiguously identified. Furthermore, the photochemistry of HPCO in the matrix has been investigated for the first time. Upon UV-light irradiation (365 or 266 nm), CO-elimination occurs by forming the parent phosphinidene HP that can be trapped by ˙NO to yield the elusive phosphinimine-N-oxyl radical HPNO˙. In contrast, an excimer laser (193 nm) irradiation of HPCO causes additional decomposition to H˙ and ˙PCO with concomitant formation of the long-sought phosphaethyne HOCP.

The heavy-atom tunneling in the Cope rearrangement of selectively deuterated semibullvalenes was extensively studied. The experimental results from matrix isolation IR spectroscopy were complemented by SCT calculations, providing insights into the impact of different barrier shapes, driving forces and cryosolvents on tunneling processes. 3-Nitrene-2-formylthiophene and 3-Nitrene-2-formylfuran: Matrix Isolation, Conformation, and Rearrangement Reactions.

Two new heteroarylnitrenes, 3-nitrene-2-formylthiophene (15/15') and 3-nitrene-2-formylfuran (16/16'), in the triplet ground state have been generated in solid Ar (10.0 K) and N2 (15.0 K) matrices by the 266 nm laser photolysis of 3-azido-2-formylthiophene (13) and 3-azido-2-formylfuran (14), respectively. According to the characterization with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level, both nitrenes exhibit two conformations depending on the orientation of the formyl groups. Upon subsequent green-light irradiation (532 nm), both the nitrenes 15/15' and 16/16' undergo ring closure to form 3,2-thienoisoxazole (17) and 3,2-furoisoxazole (18), respectively. Traces of 3-imino-4,5-dihydrothiophene-2-ketene (19), formally formed through the intramolecular 1,4-H shift in the corresponding nitrenes 15/15', have been also identified among the laser photolysis products of the azide 13. In sharp contrast to the photochemistry, the high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of the azide 13 at ca. 1000 K mainly yields imino ketene in two conformations 19/19' together with traces of isoxazole 17. In addition to the reversible conformational interconversion in the imino ketene 19 ↔ 19', the photoisomerization from isoxazole 17 to imino ketene 19 has also been observed. The HVFP of the azide 14 at ca. 1000 K results in complete dissociation to HCN, C2H2, CO, CO2, H2O, and N2. Unlike the recently disclosed hydrogen-atom tunneling (HAT) in the transformation from the structurally related 2-formyl phenylnitrene (2) to imino ketene 3 in a cryogenic Ar-matrix, the absence of HAT in nitrenes 15 and 16 can be reasonably explained by the higher barrier heights and also larger barrier widths in the isomerization reactions.

Competition between the hydrogen bond and the halogen bond in a [CH3OH-CCl4] complex: a matrix isolation IR spectroscopy and computational study.

Methanol (CH3OH) is the simplest alcohol and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is widely used as a solvent in the chemical industry. CH3OH and CCl4 are both important volatile substances in the atmosphere and CCl4 is an important precursor for atmospheric ozone depletion. Moreover, mixtures of CH3OH and CCl4 are an important class of non-aqueous mixtures as they exhibit a large deviation from Raoult's law. The specific interaction between CH3OH and CCl4 is not yet investigated experimentally. The interaction between CH3OH and CCl4 at the molecular level can be twofold: hydrogen bond (O-HCl) and halogen bond (C-ClO) interaction. One halogen bonded minimum and two hydrogen bonded minima are identified in the dimer potential energy surface. Herein, the 1 : 1 complex of [CH3OH-CCl4] has been characterised using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations to investigate the competition between hydrogen bonded and halogen bonded complexes. Vibrational spectra have been monitored in the C-Cl, C-O, and O-H stretching regions. The exclusive formation of halogen bonded 1 : 1 complexes in argon and nitrogen matrices is confirmed by a combination of experimental and simulated vibrational frequency, stabilisation energy, energy decomposition analysis, and natural bond orbital and atoms-in-molecules analyses. This investigation helps to understand the specific interactions in the [CH3OH-CCl4] mixture and also the possibilities of formation of halogen bonded atmospheric complexes that may influence the atmospheric chemical activities, and enhance aerosol formation and deposition of CCl4.
