ARCS Learning Model in Improving Students's Mathematical Connection Ability

This research is quasi-experimental research conducted to improve students’s mathematical connection skills, one of which is through the use of attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) models. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) the description of the process of students and teachers in learning mathematics using the ARCS learning model, (b) differences in the improvement of mathematical connection skills between students using the ARCS learning model and students using conventional learning, (c) student responses to mathematics learning using the ARCS learning model. The data were obtained using a test research instrument in the form of mathematical connection skills and nontest questions, namely student response questionnaires to learning using the ARCS learning model. This research was conducted at SMPN 3 Bandung City with a sample of class VIII-6 as a control class and class VIII-7 as an experimental class on statistical material. Based on the results of research and processing of n-gain data, obtained: (a) the description of the learning process of teachers and students on statistical material using the ARCS learning model is in the very good category; (b) there are differences in the improvement of mathematical connection skills between students who use the ARCS learning model and students who use conventional learning; (c) most of the students who received learning using the ARCS learning model responded positively to learning mathematics using the ARCS learning model. Development of Mathematical Connection Ability Instruments for Elementary School Students

This research is motivated by the importance of mathematical connection skills. Based on the results of previous studies, it is known that the mathematical connection ability of elementary school students is still low. This study aims to develop a mathematical connection ability instrument suitable for elementary school students. This study uses the research and development method. The samples are 27 sixth-grade students at an elementary school in Purwakarta who were selected through purposive sampling. The ability instrument that has been made is in the form of an essay that consists of five open-ended questions about geometry. The indicators developed in preparing the questions were related to the ability of mathematical connections. The questions were constructed according to expert suggestions followed by a trial to see its validity, reliability, difficulty index, and discriminating power. Results show that the validity and reliability of the test instrument developed in this study are 0.73 and 0.84, implying that the test instrument has high validity and reliability. Questions numbers 1,3, and 5 have a high level of difficulty, while numbers 2 and 4 have a very high level of difficulty. The discriminating power for question number 1 is 47.62% (good), number 2 is 28.57% (fair), number 3 is 38.10% (good), number 4 is 28.57% (fair), and number 5 is 57.14% (very good).Thus, the five test items can measure mathematical connections in learning mathematics on geometry topics for fifth-grade elementary school students and are appropriate for further research instruments on similar subjects and variables.

MATHEMATICS CONNECTIONS VIEWED FROM ADVERSITY QUOTIENT IN LMS ASSISTED PROBLEM BASED LEARNING IN SMA

The connection between mathematics and adversity quotient (AQ) has an important role in a person's ability to make decisions to solve problems in life. The Problem-based learning (PBL) model assisted by the Learning Management System (LMS) is a learning that utilizes technology combining PBL models and LMS assisted learning. This study aims to (1) examine the effectiveness of LMS-assisted PBL to improve high school students' mathematical connection skills, (2) examine the effect of AQ on students' mathematical connection abilities in LMS-assisted PBL learning. This research is a mixed method research with a sequential explanatory design with a larger quantitative portion than the qualitative one. The population of this study was class XI students of SMA N 1 Ungaran, Semarang Regency. Quantitative data were selected by simple random sampling technique. Qualitative data was taken based on the students' AQ. Quantitative data analysis techniques with parametric statistics such as average test, classical completeness test, and regression test. Qualitative data analysis techniques using data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that (1) LMS-assisted PBL learning was effective in increasing students' mathematical connections (2) there was an influence of AQ on students' mathematical connection abilities in LMS-assisted PBL learning.

Systematic Literature Review: Kemampuan Koneksi Matematis pada Model Problem Based Learning Rentang Tahun 2019-2023

The abilities that students need to master when learning mathematics include mathematical connection skills. The improvement of mathematical connection skills can be achieved through a learning model that requires students to participate in the problem-solving process, such as the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. This research aims to analyze the results of PBL model research on mathematical connection skills and identify research trends related to mathematical connection skills in the PBL model from 2019 to 2023. The chosen method is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on all articles indexed in Google Scholar. Based on the research articles, mathematical connection skills can be enhanced through the PBL model. Furthermore, research related to mathematical connection skills in the PBL model was most frequently published in 2019 and conducted predominantly at the Junior High School (SMP) level.

Students will not master mathematics material if they have difficulty in understanding concepts. To understand concepts, literacy skills are needed. Someone who can understand concepts well and is also skilled in mathematics should be sensitive to mathematical concepts related to problems. From this awareness then comes the strategy to formulate the problem in mathematical form and then solve it. Formulating, applying and interpreting are all part of this process. The purpose of this research is to explore the concept of mathematical literacy and analyse the role of mathematical literacy in the 21st century, examining some of the factors that are thought to influence mathematical literacy achievement and mathematical connection skills. The results showed that mathematical literacy can be realised through contextualised learning in achieving the goal of mathematical literacy, teachers must engage students in important activities that help them relate academic lessons to the real-world contexts they face. Mathematical literacy can be realised in learning that is concrete and teachers should teach by linking learning with students’ daily lives by doing contextual learning or doing the Realistic Mathematics Learning movement, both of which are considered good in improving the mathematical literacy skills of elementary school student.

Model Oluşturma Etkinliklerinde Matematiksel İlişkilendirmelerin Belirlenmesi: Tasarımcı Olarak Matematik Öğretmen Adaylarıyla Bir Durum Çalışması

This paper aimed to explore mathematical connections that pre-service elementary mathematics teachers identified in model-eliciting activities that they designed. The study used a qualitative, in-depth exploratory case study approach conducted with a total of 42 undergraduate students selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected from mathematical modeling problems prepared by pre-service mathematics teachers and from written assignments in which pre-service teachers evaluated their problems in terms of mathematical connections. Data analysis utilized open coding to identify and label common patterns thematically. Results showed that most of the problems designed were consistent with the principles of the model-eliciting activities. A cross-case analysis of model-eliciting activities revealed that four types of mathematical connections were identified: (i) connections to real-world situations, (ii) connections between mathematical concepts, (iii) connections between different modes of representation, and (iv) connections to other disciplines. The mathematical connections identified in the modeling activities did not seem to be mutually exclusive, but rather supportive and sometimes overlapping. Pre-service mathematics teachers’ identification of mathematical connections in modeling problems reflects both their awareness of mathematical connections and their perception that the skills required for the mathematical modeling process are directly related to mathematical connection skills. Therefore, it is important that pre-service mathematics teachers have a comprehensive understanding of mathematical connections and believe that this is an essential element of the modeling process so that the various dimensions of mathematical connections, along with relevant mathematical, pedagogical, and curricular knowledge, can be effectively integrated into model-eliciting activities.

Mathematical Connection Ability through the Application of the AIR (Auditory Intellectualy Repetition) Learning Model Assisted by Geogebra Software

The purpose of this study was to determine differences in students' mathematical connection abilities after obtaining learning by applying the AIR (Auditory Intellectual Repetition) model assisted by geogebra software. This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The population of this study was class IX students of SMPN 1 Peukan Pidie by taking samples of two classes consisting of an experimental class and a control class. The sample selection was done by random sampling. The instrument used is a mathematical connection ability test. The data analysis technique uses the ANOVA test. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there were differences in the mathematical connection abilities of students who were taught through the application of the AIR (Auditory Intellectual Repetition) model assisted by geogebra software with conventional learning. Furthermore, the results of this study also identified that there was no interaction between learning and student level on students' mathematical connection abilities.

Systematic Literature Review: MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS THROUGH PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING IN TERMS OF ADVERSITY QUOTIENT

Mathematical connection is a skill needed to understand mathematical concepts and relate them to formulas taught, once taught, applied in other subjects, and also applied to the real world. Every student has differences in terms of mathematical connection ability. This is known as the Adversity Quotient (AQ). AQ is divided into three groups namely Climbers, Campers, and Quitters. Apart from the AQ review, there is an appropriate learning model to be used in improving students' mathematical connections, namely the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. PBL is a learning model related to everyday problems. The purpose of this study is to (1) determine the effect of AQ on mathematical connection skills in the PBL learning model (2) determine the influence of AQ on mathematical connection skills. The discussion in this article uses the SLR (System Literature review) method searched from Google Scholar, Scimago Journal Rank, and Publish or Perish from 2013 to 2023. The results of this study get 22 relevant articles. Of the 24 articles studied, 14 articles concluded that mathematical connections are appropriate to use in PBL learning models and 8 articles concluded that the effect of AQ on students' mathematical connections is proportional or directly proportional. Students with a good AQ will have good math connections.

Improving Mathematical Connection Capability and Learning Outcomes Through Problem-Based Learning Model

This research is motivated by the low ability of students' mathematical connections and student learning outcomes in learning mathematics in grade IV of elementary school. Based on these problems, this study aims to improve mathematical connection skills and student learning outcomes through problem-based learning models in class IV mathematics learning whole numbers. The research subjects were fourth-grade students at SDN Mojorejo 1 Kota Batu. Data collection is done by testing and documentation. This research uses descriptive quantitative and qualitative analysis with the type of PTK research (classroom action research) by adapting the Kemmis and Taggart models which consist of four stages of planning namely, action, observation, and reflection carried out in two cycles. The results showed that the minimum mixed value of students in the pre-cycle obtained a result of 10%, then increased by 40% in cycle I, students' mathematical connection ability was 50% then increased by 39% to 89% in cycle II. In addition, the results of the average score, namely in the pre-cycle of students' mathematical connection ability, namely 45% then increased by 24% to 69% in cycle I then increased again by 19% to 80%. This shows that there is an increase in the ability of mathematical connections and student learning outcomes after learning using the problem-based learning (PBL) model.

Investigation of the mathematical connection’s ability of 9th grade students

This study aims to investigate students' mathematical connection ability in solving the problem of mathematical and correlation between indicators of mathematical connection ability. This research is correlation research. The sample of the study is 35 girls’ students in the 9th grade in a middle school in Kerman province (south-east of Iran). Data collection is done by giving a test on mathematical connection skills. The variables in this study are indicators of mathematical connection ability, namely the connection between mathematical concepts, connections between mathematics and other sciences, and connections between mathematics and everyday life. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the data after calculating the score and percentage of test answers. The findings showed that qualification of students in the indicator of the connection between mathematical concepts was good enough (69%), in the indicator of the connection between mathematics and other sciences was also good enough (66%), and the indicator of the connection between mathematics and everyday life was not enough (42%). Also, the results of Spearman's correlation coefficient showed that there is a significant relationship between both indicators of mathematical connection ability. Therefore, the connection between mathematics and everyday life of Students must be improved.

MATHEMATICAL CONNECTION OF GEOMETRY PROBLEMS BASED ON NUMERACY LITERACY THROUGH THE POLYA FRAMEWORK

The results of the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) study released by The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) show that the numeracy literacy skills of Indonesian students are at a low level, namely getting a score of 379 out of the OECD average score of 487 (OECD, 2019). As a result, students tend not to be able to solve problems correctly, and the cause is a need for mathematical connection skills. This study aims to describe the mathematical connections based on numeracy literacy in geometry. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The participants in this study were 38 grade 7 students from 3 different Madrasas in Maluku. Two students will take the research subjects from saturated data after being given a numeracy literacy-based test. In this study, students were asked to state the results of their thoughts on solving geometry concept problems given orally. Analyzing the research data was carried out through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings in this study of mathematical connections within the Polya framework can be divided into two: structured analytics and unstructured analytics.

DEVELOPMENT OF STEAM-BASED E-HANDOUT TO IMPROVE MATHEMATICAL CONNECTION SKILLS AT UPT SMP NEGERI 41 MEDAN

This paper discusses an e-handout of STEAM-based circle material to improve mathematical connection skills at UPT SMP Negeri 41 Medan. The research and development design (R&D) uses the Thiagarajan model. The research results imply that the STEAM-based e-handout met the criteria of valid, practical, and improved mathematical connection skills. Material experts provided an average score of 81% (very valid), linguists provided an average of 80% (fairly valid), and media experts provided an average score of 100% (very valid). The average score of the teacher's response to the practicality of the e-handout was 75% (practical) and the student's percentage was 67% (practical), which means that teachers and students have a positive response. Mathematical connection skills at UPT SMP Negeri 41 Medan met the criteria of effectiveness. It is shown in the second trial in which the learning objectives that were achieved from the three mathematical connection indicators exceeded 75% and students’ learning completeness was 96%. The improvement in students' mathematical connection skills with an average N-gain score in trial I and trial II indicate an improvement score of 0.134. It can be concluded that the developed e-handout is valid, practical, and effective, as well as it can improve mathematical connection skills.

The implementation of RME approach using concrete objects media to improve the mathematical connection skill of fifth-grade elementary school students

Mathematical connection skill needs to be mastered. This study aims to determine: 1) implementing a realistic approach to enhance mathematical connection skills using concrete objects as media and 2) improving the mathematical connection skill by applying the Realistic Mathematics Education approach using concrete objects as media in fifth-grade elementary school students. The research subjects consisted of 17 students. The method of this study is Classroom Action Research. The data collection method is by tests, using mathematical connection questions as the instrument. The research results show that in Cycle I, eleven students (64.7%) passed the minimum score, while six students (35.3%) did not, with a classical average of 73.83. In Cycle II, 14 students (82.35%) passed, and three (17.65%) did not, with a classical average of 82.65. These findings indicate that applying the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach with concrete objects as media can improve the mathematical.

Supporting the development of preservice teachers’ mathematical connection skills in a teacher education programme

This paper aims to examine the extent to which pre-service teachers’ mathematical connection skills were promoted through the course designed within the scope of pedagogies of practice (Grossman et al. [2009]. Teaching practice: A cross-professional perspective. Teachers College Record, 111(9), 2055–2100. https://doi.org/10.1177/016146810911100905) in the teacher education programme. Data were collected in a course that was designed to develop pre-service mathematics teachers’ (PSTs) mathematical connections skills through a classroom teaching experiment with individual contributions to the whole class learning process. Thirty-six PSTs who were enrolled in the course participated in the present study. Initial and revised lesson plans were used as primary data collection instruments. In the most general sense, the findings demonstrated that most of the PSTs improved their mathematical connection skills during the course. The results of the current study provide insight into how the courses in undergraduate education should be implemented to give PSTs opportunities to develop their mathematical connection skills.

Developing e-learning based on animation content to improve students’ mathematical connection abilities

Mathematical connection capabilities are part of an interconnected network of interconnected knowledge packages of interconnected knowledge packages of knowledge packages consisting of key concepts for understanding and developing relationships between mathematical ideas, concepts, and procedures. The purpose of this paper is to develop e-learning based on animation content to improve mathematical connection abilities in senior high school students. The e-learning was developed using framework proposed by Moodle, while the animation content was developed using macromedia flash. To get the student mathematical connection abilities, pretest and posttest were administered before and after teaching and learning process. The data were analyzed using t-test and found that e- learning which was based on animation content not only had significant effect on mathematical connection abilities but also been able to improve students’ mathematical connection abilities far better than that of conventional approach. From the posttest results show that the total score of mathematical connection abilities presented shows that the average posttest of mathematical connection abilities is 72.9 e-learning based on animation content, this shows that e-learning based on animation content can improve mathematical connection skills students with e-learning.

ANALISIS KETERAMPILAN KONEKSI MATEMATIKA DITINJAU DARI GAYA BELAJAR PESERTA DIDIK

This study aims to describe and analyze students' mathematical connection skills related to learning styles. The research was conducted at SMPN 1 Luhak Nan Duo class VII.a in West Pasaman Regency. The subjects of this study were three students from 30 students of class VII.a with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic sensation learning styles. Qualitative descriptive research method, instrument in the form of a questionnaire to see learning styles and tests of mathematical connection skills. the results of the study concluded that the visual learning style in solving math problems did not use the relationship between mathematical ideas so the indicators of mathematical connection had not been achieved, studeand nts with auditory learning styles did not meet the indicators of mathematical connections related to mathematical ideas using relevant indicators related to mathematics, learning Sensory motor has perfect mathematical connection skills, the ability to generate consistent mathematical ideas.

Pengembangan Perangkat Pembelajaran Berbasis Pendekatan Saintifik Menggunakan E-Modul Untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Koneksi Matematis Peserta Didik Kelas XI SMA

<em>This study adapts the Plomp development model by including the stages of preliminary research, prototyping, and evaluation. The tools developed are in the form of lesson plans and electronic modules based on a scientific approach for class XI high school. The tools used are confirmation sheets, observation sheets, questionnaires, interviews and tests. The value of the validity of the lesson plan is 3.5 with a very valid category and the electronic module is 3.28 with a valid category. The practical level of students in the electronics module is 88.39 in the very practical category and according to the educators, it reaches 97.91% for the lesson plan and 89.00% for the electronic boiler module in the very comfortable type. Learning tools based on a scientific approach using e-modules in the form of lesson plans and e-modules are very effective types with an efficiency level of 83.78%. It can be concluded that the scientific approach developed on learning tools using electronic modules on polynomial material is useful, practical and effective in improving the mathematical connection skills of class XI middle school students</em>

Development of M-Learning Teaching Materials on Trigonometric Materials to Improve Mathematic Connection Ability

Abstract Teaching material is given to students and assists students in learning something and making learning more interesting and easy to understand. M-learning is a learning media containing teaching materials and can be accessed by students with more attractive visuals and improve student learning outcomes. This study aims to produce M-Learning teaching materials on trigonometry and analyze the improvement of the mathematical connection abilities of XI grade students after using these teaching materials. The approach in this research is a mixed method. The research design used in this study was the One-Group Pretest-Postest Design. This type of research is R&D (Research & Development). The instruments in this study were validation sheets, interviews, questionnaires, and mathematical connection ability tests, which were analyzed using t-test and N-gain and involved 26 students of class XI SMK Karya Pembangunan Pasirjambu Bandung. This study indicates that the M-Learning Application of valid (feasible) trigonometric material is used based on the validation assessment of media experts, material experts, and student responses. In addition, there are differences in the improvement of mathematical connection skills between before and after learning using M-Learning teaching materials. The results of this study indicate that the M-Learning Application of trigonometric material is valid (appropriate) to be used based on the validation assessment of media experts, material experts, and student responses. Systematic Literature Review (SLR): Pengaruh Self-Directed Learning terhadap Kemampuan Koneksi Matematis Siswa pada Materi Fungsi Eksponensial

Connection ability is one of the most important higher order thinking skills and must be developed because in learning mathematics every concept is related to one another. The learning model that is able to hone mathematical connection skills is self-directed learning (SDL). Individuals who have high self-directed learning are individuals who are proactive, have their own initiative, are resourceful, and are individuals who have a responsibility to always learn. This study aims to conduct a literature review related to the Self-Directed Learning model and the ability of mathematical connections. The research method used in this study is the SLR (Systematic Literature Review) method. Data collection is done by documenting all articles that have similar research in research reports. The articles used in this study were 15 national journal articles obtained from the Google Scholar database using the Harzing's Publish or Perish application. Based on this research, it was found that self-directed learning is an independent learning model that can motivate students in learning and can make a student continuously seek information in order to improve abilities. The learning model that is able to hone mathematical connection skills is Self-Directed Learning (SDL).

DEVELOPMENT MODULE BASED ON REALISTIC MATHEMATICS EDUCATION ON STUDENT'S MATHEMATIC CONNECTION SKILLS

This study aims to produce a mathematics learning module based on Realistic Mathematical Education (RME) that meets the aspects of validity and practicality and effectively improves students' mathematical connection skills. This study uses a 4D development model that has been modified into three stages; define, design, and develop. The trial was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Cilongok with 11 students in class VIII E. The results showed that the developed mathematics learning module was valid by obtaining an average score of 4.3. The teacher's response showed an average score of 4.2 and 3,9 which means that the practical mathematics module is used in the teaching and learning process. The results of the effectiveness are carried out through the results of the pretest and posttest. The test was carried out through the N-Gain trial and obtained an average score of 0.5731, which was interpreted as average
