Review on Fabrication and Application of Regenerated Bombyx mori Silk Fibroin Materials

Abstract Natural silk fiber derived from the Bombyx mori (B. mori) silkworm has long been used as a luxury raw material in textile industry because of its shimmering appearance and durability, and as surgical suture for its high strength and flexibility. Regenerated silk fibroin, as the main protein extracted from the cocoons of the B. mori silkworm, recently has gained considerable attention due to its outstanding properties, including facile processability, superior biocompatibility, controllable biodegradation, and versatile functionalization. Tremendous effort has been made to fabricate silk fibroin into various promising materials with controlled structural and functional characteristics for advanced utilities in a multitude of biomedical applications, flexible optics, electronics devices, and filtration systems. Herein, reverse engineered silk fibroin extraction methods are reviewed, recent advances in extraction techniques are discussed. Fabrication methods of silk fibroin materials in various formats are also addressed in detail; in particular, progress in new fabrication technologies is presented. Attractive applications of silk fibroin-based materials are then summarized and highlighted. The challenges faced by current approaches in production of silk fibroin-based materials and future directions acquired for pushing these favorable materials further toward above mentioned applications are further elaborated.

Citrus sinensis peel for eco friendly fragrance on textiles

Food production and processing generates huge amount of waste and by-products, causing irreversible environmental damage. Most of these waste/ by-products are untreated and underutilized, it is either burnt, dumped/ end up in landfills. Safe utilization of these will prevent disease transmission and pollution. So it is important to find ways to treat this waste and give a second life. Food industries waste can be used as raw material in textile industry to produce value added products. Costumer’s need for special finish on textiles has generated many opportunities for innovative finishes. But these competitions for better sales and profit have led to environmental degradation. Hence finishing using sustainable means is the need of the hour and the investigator selected Citrus sinensis peel an organic waste for the study. Being an unavoidable part in textile treatments, finishes should be highly efficient, durable, and cost effective and manufactured in an environmentally sustainable manner. In this study Nanotechnology, Ultrasonic and Microencapsulation method has been carried out. From subjective evaluation conducted it is clear that nano particle coated fabric have better fragrance than microencapsules padded fabric. The role of Citrus sinensis peel as a natural fragrance finishing agent can be confirmed through this study. Hence this study can be taken as a basis for taking up many more natural materials for fragrance finishing and applied in other textile products.

Relationship between Fiber Fineness and Diameter of Three Bast Fibers

ABSTRACT Natural plant fibers are outstanding materials in textile industry. The fiber fineness, length and strength are three of the most important indexes to evaluate the fiber quality. Fiber fineness refers to the thickness of the fiber, which is usually expressed by the mass per unit length. The relationship between fiber fineness and fiber diameter is very important for deeper understanding of a new fiber. In this study, three different natural fibers were collected to measure the fiber fineness, diameter, and density. Furthermore, SEM was conducted to detect the fiber cross section, and the correlation equations were constructed between the fiber fineness and diameter. Results showed that vibration method could generate a lower fiber fineness value; all the correlation equations had high accuracy to predict fiber fineness with different diameters, and most of the prediction errors were lower than 10%. In the final equations, the coefficients were 0.825, 0.69, 0.975 of apocynum, ramie, and kenaf fiber, respectively.

Improved antibacterial property of cotton fabrics coated with waste sericin/silver nanocomposite

Sericin is a valuable protein with unique properties, however it is currently discarded as a waste in silk industry, which leads to economic losses and environmental pollution. This study focuses on the utilisation of recovered waste sericin as a potential antibacterial raw material in textile industry for the first time. Waste sericin was used as a reducing and stabilising agent in the production of sericin/silver nanocomposite samples with a binary reducing agent system containing NaOH and NaBH4. The nanocomposite samples were prepared with three different cross-linkers and applied to cotton fabrics at nanocomposite concentrations of 20 g/L and 40 g/L. The antibacterial performance against Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) and Staphylococcus Aureus (S. Aureus) was good; which remained even at the end of 20 wash cycles. The fabrics exhibited better mechanical properties in the presence of cross-linkers.

Utilization of orange peel waste in textile industry: A review

Utilization of fruits and vegetable wastes are one of the important and challengeable works around the world. Orange peels are one of fruit waste generated mainly by the juicing industries that cause environmental problems due to its large volume of generation and physicochemical characteristics, such as soil and water pollution. Meanwhile, textile industry has been growing interest on utilization of bioresource waste derived from fruits as an important step toward sustainable development. Recently, researchers have developed various luxury materials using fruit waste from pineapple, apple, grape, and banana etc. Similarly, orange peel wastes are used as a source of natural dye, green absorber, mosquito repellent, perfume retention agent, and antimicrobial agent, and produced a luxury fiber in textile industry. This review describes the various application of orange peel waste as sustainable material in textile industry.

Preparation and application of VOCs adsorption materials in textile industry

A series of HMS molecular sieves with different pore structures were prepared by using dodecylamine and octadecylamine as template and tetrabutyl orthosilicate as silicon source to study the different pH values and temperatures. Adsorption performance. The physicochemical properties of HMS molecular sieves were characterized by BET, XRD and SEM. The results showed that the HMS molecular sieve material synthesized by dodecylamine as template was obtained after standing for 12 h in water bath for 12 h, pH 2 and calcination temperature was 550 °C. The best adsorption effectis HMS molecular sieve material synthesized by octadecylamine as template agent has the best adsorption effect when the aging time is water bath for 24 h, pH is 10, and calcination temperature is 550 °C. The adsorption rates are up to 71.72% and 74.78%, respectively.

Bleaching of SeaCell® active fabrics with hydrogen peroxide

Seaweed-based SeaCell® fibres have been considered as new materials for textile industry. In this study, seaweedbased SeaCell® Active fibres which have antifungal and antibacterial activity have been used. Simple, economic and green process is applied to investigate the bleaching performance of SeaCell® Active fabric. Bleaching process has been performed in a laboratory scale dyeing machine by using H2O2 at different concentrations. Also, different bleaching trials were carried out by varying temperature, pH and process duration. Colour Measurements of the bleached SeaCell® Active fabrics have been characterized by utilizing Datacolor SF 600 +. Tristimulus and Whiteness Index values have been calculated according to the CIELab system with D65/10 o observer values. After the bleaching treatment, the obtained results reveal that SeaCell® Active fabric with satisfactory whiteness index and improved lightness (L*) value can be obtained by processing the fabric at 90 °C for 60 min in a bleaching bath with fixed pH 7.5 containing 30 ml/l H2O2. SEM images of untreated and bleached SeaCell® Active fabrics also show that some fibres have been damaged after bleaching process.
