Masticatory function in edentulous patients wearing implant overdentures after graftless maxillary sinus membrane elevation.

Graftless sinus floor augmentation shows good results in bone gain, radiology and implant survival. Clinically, this technique can be recommended as an alternative to conventional procedures using augmentation materials. This study aims to assess masticatory performance, masticatory ability and patient satisfaction after graftless sinus floor augmentation. The study group consisted of patients who had received a graftless sinus lift procedure in a split-mouth design and was compared to patients with maxillary implant-supported overdentures without augmentation and a natural dentition group. To assess objective masticatory performance, the mixing ability test was performed. Three questionnaires were used to assess patient reported outcomes related to mastication and patient satisfaction. Each group included ten patients. Both the graftless sinus lift group and the edentulous control group had a worse masticatory performance compared to the natural dentition group. Masticatory ability, measured by patient reported outcomes, was not different between the graftless sinus floor augmentation group and implant-retained overdentures group without augmentation, but the natural dentition group showed better results. Thereby, the better the masticatory performance in patients with a graftless sinus membrane elevation the better the patient satisfaction for 'prosthesis', 'appearance of prostheses', 'speech' and 'mastication and eating'. Patients with implant-supported overdentures show inferior masticatory function compared to those with natural dentition. There were no significant differences in masticatory performance between patients with implant-retained overdentures, with or without graftless augmentation. The decision on the preferred procedure should consider additional factors such as anatomical, surgical-technical aspects and patient's preferences.

Assessment and Improvement of Masticatory Performance in Frail Older People: A Narrative Review.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the estimated number of older adults is around 962 million and is projected to increase to 2.1 billion by 2050. The oral frailty concept is associated with gradual oral function loss in relation to aging. There is a need to emphasize the improvement of oral function based on an evaluation of masticatory performance in patients with various oral conditions or systemic diseases and especially in the frail elderly. The present narrative review presents an overview of the current state of the assessment and improvement of masticatory performance in frail older people. To fully encompass oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness, dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs) should be included; nevertheless, there are limited evidence-based rehabilitation approaches. The concept of oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness should involve dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs), and in this sense, there are only a few evidence-based rehabilitation procedures to improve oro-facial hypofunction besides prosthodontics. It must be considered that reduced neuroplastic capacity in old individuals might preclude a positive outcome of these strategies that might need to be accompanied by functional training and nutritional counseling.

Assessment of masticatory performance in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

One of the main goals of orthognathic surgery is to improve the masticatory performance in patients with maxillofacial deformities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the literature on assessing masticatory performance before, after orthognathic surgery and normal occlusion. An electronic search was performed via Pubmed, Scopus, LILACs and Web of Science without any restrictions until June 2022. The articles assessing masticatory performance using a comminution assay, bite force or occlusal contact area in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery with or without comparing controls were included. The risk of bias of the selected articles was assessed using the appropriate tools according to the study design. Of the 2507 records identified, 21 studies were included in the qualitative evaluation and 17 studies in the meta-analysis. Nine articles were cohort studies, and the other eight were before-after studies. Moderate to high risks of bias were found among the articles. Comparing the values before and after surgery, the meta-analysis revealed a significant improvement in the bite force and occlusal contact area at 1- and 2-year post-surgery. However, regardless of the assessed parameters, the masticatory performance in patients with normal occlusion was significantly greater than those in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery at all evaluated time points. Although combined surgical orthodontic treatment can improve impaired masticatory function, assessed by the comminution method, bite force and occlusal contact area, the improvement may not reach that of normal occlusion.

Factors related to masticatory performance in patients with removable dentures for jaw defects following oral tumor surgery.

Purpose In the treatment of oral tumors, extensive jaw defects due to surgical resection can reduce masticatory performance. Herein, we aimed to clarify the factors related to masticatory performance in patients with jaw defects.Methods In total, 76 patients (42 male and 34 female) underwent prosthetic treatment with a removable denture for a jaw defect following oral tumor surgery. Data on history of radiation therapy, period of time since surgery, period of use of the present denture, number of remaining teeth, and site of the jaw defect were collected. Masticatory performance was evaluated using test gummy jelly. In addition, maximum bite force, tongue pressure, tongue-lip motor function (oral diadochokinesis /pa/, /ta/, /ka/), and oral dryness were evaluated. Logistic regression analysis was performed with lower masticatory performance scores as the dependent variable. Since multicollinearity was suspected between the oral diadochokinesis /ta/ and /ka/ syllables, two logistic regression analyses were conducted: Model 1 with the /ta/ syllable as an explanatory variable, and Model 2 with the /ka/ syllable as an explanatory variable.Results In Model 1, a history of radiation therapy, maximum bite force, number of remaining teeth, tongue pressure, and oral diadochokinesis /ta/ were significant explanatory variables. In Model 2, a history of radiation therapy, maximum bite force, number of remaining teeth, and tongue pressure were significant explanatory variables.Conclusions A history of radiation therapy, maximum bite force, tongue pressure, number of remaining teeth, and motor function of the proglossis are related to decreased masticatory performance in patients with jaw defects.

Masticatory performance in patients undergoing free fibula flap for mandible reconstruction

BackgroundTo explore the masticatory performance in patients undergoing an osteo(cutaneous) free fibula (OFF) flap for mandible reconstruction by a prospective design.MethodsA total of 56 patients who had undergone OFF flap reconstructions for mandibular reconstruction secondary to malignant (squamous cell carcinoma) or benign (ameloblastoma) tumor resection were prospectively enrolled. They were asked to complete the masticatory performance test by the weigh method and the chew domain of the University of Washington quality of life questionnaire (version 4) preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The pair nonparametric test was used to analyze the dynamic change of masticatory performance and subjective chew function.ResultsFifty-one patients were included for analysis finally. The mean masticatory performance for patients with malignant tumors were 53.4% ± 10.3%, 36.4% ± 10.3%, 42.6% ± 9.6%, 52.8% ± 10.9%, and 53.1% ± 11.8% preoperatively, at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months postoperatively, respectively. Compared with the preoperative level, the masticatory performance had a significant reduction immediately after surgery (p < 0.001), followed by a return to the baseline level within three months. A similar trend was noted for those with benign tumors. The mean score of chew domain for patients with malignant tumors were 100 ± 0, 54.3 ± 32.9, 81.4 ± 24.5, and 92.9 ± 17.8 preoperatively, at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months postoperatively, respectively. Compared with the preoperative level, the subjective chew function was greatly affected within the first three months (p < 0.001), and it gradually recovered to the baseline level in the following nine months. A similar trend was noted in patients with benign tumors.ConclusionsThe masticatory performance and subjective chew function was significantly affected after OFF flap reconstructions in the short term, but both recovered to the preoperative levels within 9–12 months.

Reliability of the mixing ability test testing masticatory performance in patients with head and neck cancer and healthy controls.

BackgroundTreatment of patients with head and neck cancer can result in disrupted mastication. To measure masticatory performance in people with compromised mastication, the mixing ability test (MAT) was developed.ObjectiveIn this study, the reliability of the MAT was evaluated in patients with head and neck cancer and healthy controls.MethodsThirty‐four patients with head and neck cancer and 42 healthy controls performed the MAT twice on the same day. To assess reliability, the intra‐class correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), standard error of measurement (SEM), smallest detectable change (SDC) and limits of agreement (LoA) were calculated.ResultsA good (ICC = 0.886) and moderate correlation (ICC = 0.525) were found for patients and healthy controls, respectively. Patients had a worse mixing ability (mean = 19.12, SD = 4.56) in comparison with healthy controls (mean = 16.42, SD = 2.04). The SEM was 0.76 in patients and 1.45 in healthy controls, with a SDC of 2.12 and 4.02, respectively. The LoA was −4.46 to 4.42 in patients and −3.65 to 4.59 in healthy controls.ConclusionThe MAT has a good reliability in patients with head and neck cancer and a moderate reliability in healthy controls.

A pilot study of masticatory function after maxillectomy comparing rehabilitation with an obturator prosthesis and reconstruction with a digitally planned, prefabricated, free, vascularized fibula flap

Statement of problemOral rehabilitation after maxillectomy can be performed by prosthetic obturation or with a free fibula flap. Successful prosthetic obturation of large maxillectomy defects can be difficult, and masticatory function is at risk in these patients. Surgical reconstruction might provide adequate masticatory function, but the literature is lacking evidence regarding this topic. PurposeThe purpose of this pilot clinical study was to assess masticatory functions and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) outcomes in patients after maxillectomy reconstructed by using the Rohner or the Alberta Reconstructive Technique and to compare outcomes with patients rehabilitated with an obturator prosthesis. Material and methodsMixing ability, maximum occlusal force, maximum mouth opening, and HR-QoL were assessed. Differences between the 2 groups were analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis tests for continuous variables and chi-squared tests for categorical variables. ResultsThe reconstructed patients (n=11) showed better mixing ability, occlusal force (nonoperated side), and overall mean HR-QoL. The nonreconstructed group (n=13) did not differ from the reconstructed groups in terms of maximum mouth opening, overall mean occlusal force, occlusal force on the operated side, and most HR-QoL questionnaire domains. ConclusionsMaxillary reconstruction might be beneficial for masticatory performance in patients undergoing maxillectomy. A larger study is justified to support the possible benefit of the reconstruction of maxillary defects regarding mixing ability, occlusal force (nonoperated side), and HR-QoL.

Tongue function and its influence on masticatory performance in patients treated for oral cancer: a five-year prospective study

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to observe the impact of oral oncological treatment, including the recovery of several tongue functions (force, mobility, and sensory functions), and to determine the influence of these functions on masticatory performance.Materials and methodsMasticatory performance and tongue force, mobility, and sensory functions were determined in 123 patients with oral cavity cancer. The assessments were performed 4 weeks before treatment and 4 to 6 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years after treatment. Generalized estimation equations and mixed model analyses were performed, correcting for previously identified factors in the same population.ResultsA significant deterioration in tongue mobility and sensory function was observed in patients with mandible and tongue and/or floor-of-mouth tumors. Better tongue force and sensory function (thermal and tactile) positively influenced masticatory performance, and this effect was stronger where fewer occlusal units were present. The effect of both the tongue force and maximum bite force was weaker in dentate patients in comparison with patients with full dentures. A web-based application was developed to enable readers to explore our results and provide insight into the coherence between the found factors in the mixed model.ConclusionsTongue function deteriorates after oral oncological treatment, without statistically significant recovery. Adequate bite and tongue forces are especially important for patients with a poor prosthetic state. Patients with sensory tongue function deficits especially benefit from the presence of more occluding pairs.

Do implant-supported fixed partial prostheses improve masticatory performance in patients with unilateral posterior missing teeth?

The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement in masticatory performance and satisfaction with chewing ability in partially edentulous patients after treatment with an implant-supported fixed partial prosthesis (ISFPP). This prospective study included 30 patients (mean age 59years; 17 women) with unilateral posterior missing teeth treated with one-, two- or three-unit ISFPPs and 10 healthy individuals (mean age 36years; 8 women) with complete natural dentition to establish the normal levels of mastication. Three variables were determined at baseline and at 3-months' follow-up in all participants: masticatory performance according to the median particle size (MPS) during freestyle mastication and unilateral mastication on each side, and satisfaction with chewing ability using a visual analog scale. Paired samples t test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for intra-group and inter-group comparisons. The MPS following freestyle mastication decreased significantly at 3months in both groups. Significant reductions of 21%, 30%, and 42% in the MPS were obtained from unilateral mastication on the treated side after treatment with 1, 2, or 3 restorative units, respectively. Three months after ISFPP, satisfaction with chewing ability improved by 40% in the treatment group. Freestyle masticatory performance may improve slightly within three months of treatment with an ISFPP and may be similar to that of subjects with complete natural dentition. Patients may obtain a 21%-38% improvement in unilateral mastication on the treated side and a 26%-54% improvement in satisfaction with chewing ability.

Teaching Complete Denture Procedures to Dental Students by Conventional or Simplified Methods: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

With populations aging around the world, the need for complete dentures is likely to increase in Brazil and other developing countries, as well among low-income populations globally, making the teaching of cost-efficient techniques to dental students essential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of complete dentures fabricated by the simplified method in comparison to the conventional method regarding patients' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and satisfaction, dentures' functional quality, and masticatory performance of patients who were rehabilitated by dental students. From February 2016 to April 2017, final-year dental students at the Federal University of Alfenas, Brazil, were instructed to fabricate new complete dentures for 36 edentulous patients, who were randomly divided into two groups according to denture manufacturing method: simplified method or conventional method. Patients' OHRQoL and satisfaction and the prostheses quality were evaluated at one, three, and six months. Masticatory performance was evaluated at three months. The results showed there was no significant difference between the two methods regarding OHRQoL, patient satisfaction, prostheses quality, or masticatory performance (p>0.05). All aspects evaluated also remained constant for the same group (simplified method or conventional method) in all periods of evaluation (p>0.05). The study concluded that the simplified method for complete denture fabrication was able to produce protheses with functional quality and patient satisfaction comparable to those produced with the conventional method, even when made by dental students.

Masticatory function and related factors after oral oncological treatment: A 5‐year prospective study

BackgroundChewing ability is often compromised in patients with oral cancer. The aim of this study was to identify which factors affect masticatory performance in these patients.MethodsPatients with primary oral cancer were assessed for up to 5 years after primary treatment. Healthy controls were assessed once. A mixed‐model analysis was performed, with masticatory performance as outcome measure.ResultsA total of 123 patients were included in the study. Factors positively associated with masticatory performance were number of occlusal units (OU), having functional dentures, and maximum mouth opening (MMO). The impact of tumor location and maximum bite force (MBF) differed per assessment moment. Masticatory performance declined for up to 1 year but recovered at 5 years after treatment.ConclusionMasticatory performance in patients treated for oral cancer is affected by MBF, MMO, number of OU, and dental status. These should be the focus of posttreatment therapy.

Influence of dentistry procedures on masticatory function of dentate patients

Aim: Evaluate the masticatory performance in patients with different clinical situations: patients with natural dentition without restorative and/or orthodontic intervention (Group CG) and patients with restorations and/or orthodontic intervention (Group TG). Subjects received instruction before the experiment, related to masticatory movements. Methods: Three capsules containing the granules were delivered separately to chew for 20 seconds each, controlled by the examiner. One capsule was chewed for 20 seconds only on the left side; the second capsule was chewed for 20 seconds only on the right side; and the third capsule was chewed for 20 seconds to simulate each patient’s mastication. The mean data and standard deviation of masticatory function of each patient was calculated. Results: The results obtained in this study showed that there were no statistically significant differences (P &lt; 0.05) between both tested groups (0.0320 ± 0.00716, 0.0436 ± 0.00974). Conclusions: Patients who were submitted to orthodontic and/or restorative procedures, with balanced occlusion could be used as a control group, making easier the patient recruitment. Clinicians and researchers on masticatory performance evaluation could apply the colorimetric method. The colorimetric method was a standardize method, effective and easy to execute.

Effect of prosthetic restoration on masticatory function in patients with shortened dental arches: a multicentre study.

The aim of this multicentre study was to investigate the effect of prosthetic restoration for missing posterior teeth on mastication in patients with shortened dental arches (SDAs). Partially dentate patients who had an intact teeth in anterior region and missed distal molar(s) (2-12 missing occlusal units) classified as Kennedy Class I or Class II were recruited from seven university-based dental hospitals in Japan. Of the 125 subjects who underwent baseline (pre-treatment) and follow-up/post-treatment evaluation, 53 chose no replacement of missing teeth and 72 chose treatment with removable partial dentures (n = 53) or implant-supported fixed partial dentures (n = 19). Objective masticatory performance (MP) was evaluated using a gummy jelly test. Perception of chewing ability (CA) was rated using a food intake questionnaire. In the no-treatment group, mean MP and CA scores at baseline were similar to those at follow-up evaluation (P > 0·05). In the treatment group, mean MP after treatment was significantly greater than the pre-treatment mean MP (P < 0·05). However, the mean perceived CA in the treatment groups was similar at pre- and post-treatment (P > 0·05). In a subgroup analysis of subjects in the treatment group, subjects with lower pre-treatment CA showed a significant CA increase after treatment (P = 0·004), but those with higher pre-treatment CA showed a significant decrease in CA (P = 0·001). These results suggest that prosthetic restoration for SDAs may benefit objective masticatory performance in patients needing replacement of missing posterior teeth, but the benefit in subjective chewing ability seems to be limited in subjects with perceived impairment in chewing ability before treatment.

Assessment of masticatory function in patients with non-sagittal occlusal discrepancies.

Non-sagittal occlusal discrepancies such as posterior cross-bite and anterior openbite are common types of malocclusion, but studies on masticatory function related to those malocclusions have been scarce. The aim of this study was to quantify the masticatory performance in patients with non-sagittal discrepancies compared to those with normal occlusion, using both objective and subjective measures. Maximum bite force and contact area using Dental Prescale(®) system as a static objective assessment, Mixing Ability Index (MAI) as a dynamic objective evaluation and food intake ability (FIA) as a subjective assessment were analysed from 21 people in normal occlusion (Group N) and 64 patients with posterior cross-bite (Group C), anterior openbite (Group O) or both (Group B). The differences of the maximum bite force, the contact area, the MAI and the FIA were compared, and their correlations were figured out. The non-sagittal malocclusion groups showed lower values in the maximum bite force, the contact area, the MAI and the FIA compared to those in the normal group (P < 0·0001). Compared to Group N, Groups C, O and B showed 61·5%, 42·1% and 40·1% of the maximum bite force, and 84%, 84% and 76% of hard food FIA, respectively. However, there were no significant differences among Groups C, O and B. The MAI showed higher correlation with the FIA (r = 0·38, P < 0·01), than with the maximum bite force and the contact area (both r = 0·24, P < 0·5). These results revealed that masticatory function in patients with non-sagittal discrepancies is significantly reduced both objectively and subjectively.

Masticatory function in patients with dentofacial deformities before and after orthognathic treatment-a prospective, longitudinal, and controlled study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the self-estimated masticatory ability and masticatory performance in patients with dentofacial deformities before and after orthognathic treatment; in comparison to an age- and gender-matched control group. The masticatory ability and masticatory performance were evaluated in 121 consecutive patients (treatment group), referred for orthognathic treatment. Eighteen months after treatment, 98 patients (81%) completed a follow-up examination. Masticatory ability was assessed on a visual analog scale, while the masticatory performance was evaluated by a masticatory test using round silicon tablets. Signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were registered by a clinical examination and a questionnaire. The control group comprised 56 age- and gender-matched subjects who were examined at baseline. At the baseline examination, the treatment group had a significantly lower masticatory ability and performance compared with the control group. After treatment, the masticatory ability significantly improved in the treatment group and reached the same level as in the control group. The masticatory performance index increased significantly but was still lower than in the control group. Both the masticatory ability and masticatory performance were affected by the number of occlusal contacts during maximal biting pressure and by the self-estimated overall symptoms of TMD. Patients with dentofacial deformities, corrected by orthognathic treatment, have a significant positive treatment outcome in respect of masticatory ability and masticatory performance. Furthermore, the occlusion and symptoms of TMD have an impact on both masticatory ability and masticatory performance.

Comparative cross-sectional study of masticatory performance and mastication predominance for patients with missing posterior teeth

PurposeMissing posterior teeth can decrease masticatory function and cause horizontal mastication deviation, i.e., mastication predominance. Mastication predominance may lead to abnormal tooth attrition and temporomandibular disorders. This study evaluated masticatory performance and mastication predominance in patients with missing posterior teeth to investigate effects of missing posterior teeth on masticatory performance and mastication predominance. MethodsThirty volunteers with normal dentition (control group), 30 patients with unilateral missing posterior teeth (unilateral group), and 23 patients with bilateral missing posterior teeth (bilateral group) participated. Gummy jellies were used to evaluate participants’ masticatory performance, and electromyography was used to assess the degree of mastication predominance. Chewing gums, gummy jellies, and peanuts were used as foods of various hardnesses for evaluating mastication predominance. ResultsCompared with the control group, masticatory performance did not differ in the unilateral group but was significantly decreased in the bilateral group. With chewing gum and gummy jellies, the degree of mastication predominance was significantly increased in both unilateral and bilateral groups than the control group. With peanuts, the degree of mastication predominance was significantly increased in the unilateral group than the control group. ConclusionsAlthough masticatory performance was not decreased in the unilateral group, the degree of mastication predominance was increased. Decreased masticatory performance was observed in the bilateral group, and for foods with normal hardness and soft foods, the degree of mastication predominance was increased. These results suggested that mastication predominance should be considered in the recovery of masticatory performance in patients with missing posterior teeth.

Oral Health, Temporomandibular Disorder, and Masticatory Performance in Patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type 2

Background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health status of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and bruxism, as well as to measure masticatory performance of subjects with Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 (CMT2). Methods and Results. The average number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) for both groups, control (CG) and CMT2, was considered low (CG = 2.46; CMT2 = 1.85, P = 0.227). The OHIP-14 score was considered low (CG = 2.86, CMT2 = 5.83, P = 0.899). The prevalence of self-reported TMD was 33.3% and 38.9% (P = 0.718) in CG and CMT2 respectively and for self-reported bruxism was 4.8% (CG) and 22.2% (CMT2), without significant difference between groups (P = 0.162). The most common clinical sign of TMD was masseter (CG = 38.1%; CMT2 = 66.7%) and temporalis (CG = 19.0%; GCMT2 = 33.3%) muscle pain. The geometric mean diameter (GMD) was not significantly different between groups (CG = 4369; CMT2 = 4627, P = 0.157). Conclusion. We conclude that the CMT2 disease did not negatively have influence either on oral health status in the presence and severity of TMD and bruxism or on masticatory performance.

Evaluation of low-level laser therapy effectiveness on the pain and masticatory performance of patients with myofascial pain

This study investigated the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the masticatory performance (MP), pressure pain threshold (PPT), and pain intensity in patients with myofascial pain. Twenty-one subjects, with myofascial pain according to Research Diagnostic Criteria/temporomandibular dysfunction, were divided into laser group (n = 12) and placebo group (n = 9) to receive laser therapy (active or placebo) two times per week for 4 weeks. The measured variables were: (1) MP by analysis of the geometric mean diameter (GMD) of the chewed particles using Optocal test material, (2) PPT by a pressure algometer, and (3) pain intensity by the visual analog scale (VAS). Measurements of MP and PPT were obtained at three time points: baseline, at the end of treatment with low-level laser and 30 days after (follow-up). VAS was measured at the same times as above and weekly throughout the laser therapy. The Friedman test was used at a significance level of 5% for data analysis. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe (CAAE: 0025.0.107.000-10). A reduction in the GMD of crushed particles (p < 0.01) and an increase in PPT (p < 0.05) were seen only in the laser group when comparing the baseline and end-of-treatment values. Both groups showed a decrease in pain intensity at the end of treatment. LLLT promoted an improvement in MP and PPT of the masticatory muscles.

A Clinical Study to Evaluate and Compare the Masticatory Performance in Complete Denture Wearers with and without Soft Liners

Soft liners are mainly used with complete dentures in case of poor mucosal conditions and for the even distribution of masticatory forces. However, there is some doubt as to whether the elasticity of the soft liner disturbs masticatory function because denture wearers may need extra force to compress the soft liners, leading to muscle fatigue. So, this clinical study was done to evaluate and compare the masticatory performance in patients wearing complete dentures with and without the use of soft liners. Twenty edentulous subjects were selected for the study. For each patient two sets of complete dentures were fabricated. First set without the use of soft liner and the second one for using with soft liner. Peanuts were selected as test food for the study and the chewed food was pooled for a single measurement and then poured on sieves. Both filter and filtrate were collected and was centrifuged. Masticatory performance in this study has been quantitated by dividing the volume of test food passing through the sieve by the total volume of test food recovered. The fraction is then expressed as a percent. With the paired t-test performed, significant difference was found between the masticatory performance in patients wearing complete dentures with and without the use of soft liners. 5% difference was seen in the mean performance. It has been concluded from this study that, masticatory performance in patients wearing complete dentures with the use of soft liners was improved by 5% when compared to the patients wearing complete dentures without using soft liners. This present study indicates that the masticatory performance enhanced with the use of soft liners for complete denture patients.

Should edentulous patients be constrained to removable complete dentures? The use of dental implants to improve the quality of life for edentulous patients

Nowadays, there is some speculation among dental educators that the need for complete dentures will significantly decrease in the future and that training in their provision should be removed from the dental curriculum. To sensitise the reader to the functional shortcomings of complete denture therapy in the edentulous patient and present restorative options including implants to improve edentulous quality of life in these patients. Information retrieval followed a systematic approach using PubMed. English articles published from 1964 to 2008, in which the masticatory performance of patients with implant-supported dentures was assessed by objective methods and compared with performance with conventional dentures, were included. National epidemiological survey data suggested that the adult population in need of one or two complete dentures will increase from 35.4 million adults in 2000 to 37.9 million adults in 2020. Clinical studies have showed that the ratings of general satisfaction were significantly better in the patients treated with implant overdentures post-delivery compared with the complete denture users. In addition, the implant group gave significantly higher ratings on comfort, stability and ability to chew. Furthermore, patients who received mandibular implant overdentures had significantly fewer oral health-related quality of life problems than did the conventional group. Implant-supported dentures including either complete overdentures or a hybrid prosthesis significantly improve the quality of life for edentulous patients compared with conventional removable complete dentures. Therefore, the contemporary dental practitioner should consider other options as well as conventional removable complete dentures to restore edentulous patients.
