Star clusters forming in a low metallicity starburst – rapid self-enrichment by (very) massive stars

Abstract Stellar winds of massive (≳ 9 M⊙) and very massive (≳ 100 M⊙) stars may play an important role in the metal-enrichment during the formation of star clusters. With novel high-resolution hydrodynamical griffin-project simulations, we investigate the rapid recycling of stellar wind-material during the formation of massive star clusters up to Mcluster ∼ 2 × 105 M⊙ in a low-metallicity dwarf galaxy starburst. The simulation realises new stars from a stellar initial mass function (IMF) between 0.08 M⊙ and ∼400 M⊙ and follows stellar winds, radiation and supernova-feedback of single massive stars with evolution tracks. Star clusters form on timescales less than ∼5 Myr, and their supernova-material is very inefficiently recycled. Stellar wind-material, however, is trapped in massive clusters resulting in the formation of stars self-enriched in Na, Al, and N within only a few Myr. Wind-enriched (second population) stars can be centrally concentrated in the most massive clusters (≳ 104 M⊙) and the locked wind-material increases approximately as $M_\mathrm{cluster}^{2}$. These trends resemble the characteristics of observed second population stars in globular clusters. We fit scaling relations to the log-normal distributed wind-mass fractions and extrapolate to possible globular cluster progenitors of Mcluster = 107 M⊙ to investigate whether a dominant second population could form. This can only happen if the IMF is well sampled, single massive stars produce at least a factor of a few more enriched winds e.g. through a top-heavy IMF, and a significant fraction of the first population (unenriched) stars is lost during cluster evolution.

Great Balls of FIRE III. Modelling black hole mergers from massive star clusters in simulations of galaxies

Despite the nearly hundred gravitational-wave detections reported by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, the question of the cosmological origin of merging binary black holes (BBHs) remains open. The two main formation channels generally considered are from isolated field binaries or via dynamical assembly in dense star clusters. Here we focus on understanding the dynamical formation of merging BBHs within massive clusters in galaxies of different masses. To this end, we applied a new framework to consistently model the formation and evolution of massive star clusters in zoom-in cosmological simulations of galaxies. Each simulation, taken from the FIRE project, provides a realistic star formation environment, with a unique star formation history, that hosts realistic giant molecular clouds that constitute the birthplace of star clusters. Combined with the code for star cluster evolution CMC we are able to produce populations of dynamically formed merging BBHs across cosmic time in different environments. As the most massive star clusters preferentially form in dense massive clouds of gas, we find that, despite their low metallicities favouring the creation of black holes, low-mass galaxies contain few massive clusters and therefore make a limited contribution to the global production of dynamically formed merging BBHs. Furthermore, we find that massive clusters can host hierarchical BBH mergers with clear, identifiable physical properties. Looking at the evolution of the BBH merger rate in different galaxies, we find strong correlations between BBH mergers and the most extreme episodes of star formation. Finally, we discuss the implications for future LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA gravitational wave observations.

Molecular and ionized gas in tidal dwarf galaxies: the spatially resolved star formation relation

ABSTRACT Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are low-mass objects that form within tidal and/or collisional debris ejected from more massive interacting galaxies. We use CO(1–0) observations from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and integral-field spectroscopy from Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer to study molecular and ionized gas in three TDGs: two around the collisional galaxy NGC 5291 and one in the late-stage merger NGC 7252. The CO and H α emission is more compact than the H i emission and displaced from the H i dynamical centre, so these gas phases cannot be used to study the internal dynamics of TDGs. We use CO, H i, and H α data to measure the surface densities of molecular gas (Σmol), atomic gas (Σatom), and star formation rate (ΣSFR), respectively. We confirm that TDGs follow the same spatially integrated ΣSFR–Σgas relation of regular galaxies, where Σgas = Σmol + Σatom, even though they are H i dominated. We find a more complex behaviour in terms of the spatially resolved ΣSFR–Σmol relation on subkpc scales. The majority ($\sim 60~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) of star-forming regions in TDGs lie on the same ΣSFR–Σmol relation of normal spiral galaxies but show a higher dispersion around the mean. The remaining fraction of star-forming regions ($\sim 40~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) lie in the starburst region and are associated with the formation of massive super star clusters, as shown by Hubble Space Telescope images. We conclude that the local star formation activity in TDGs proceeds in a hybrid fashion, with some regions comparable to normal spiral galaxies and others to extreme starbursts.

GMC collisions as triggers of star formation – VIII. The core mass function

ABSTRACTCompression in giant molecular cloud (GMC) collisions is a promising mechanism to trigger the formation of massive star clusters and OB associations. We simulate colliding and non-colliding magnetized GMCs and examine the properties of pre-stellar cores, selected from projected mass surface density maps, including after synthetic ALMA observations. We then examine core properties, including mass, size, density, velocity, velocity dispersion, temperature, and magnetic field strength. After 4 Myr, ∼1000 cores have formed in the GMC collision, and the high-mass end of the core mass function (CMF) can be fit by a power-law dN/dlogM ∝ M−α with α ≃ 0.7, i.e. relatively top heavy compared to a Salpeter mass function. Depending on how cores are identified, a break in the power law can appear around a few $\times 10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$. The non-colliding GMCs form fewer cores with a CMF with α ≃ 0.8–1.2, i.e. closer to the Salpeter index. We compare the properties of these CMFs to those of several observed samples of cores. Considering other properties, cores formed from colliding clouds are typically warmer, have more disturbed internal kinematics, and are more likely to be gravitational unbound, than cores formed from non-colliding GMCs. The dynamical state of the protocluster of cores formed in the GMC–GMC collision is intrinsically subvirial but can appear to be supervirial if the total mass measurement is affected by observations that miss mass on large scales or at low densities.

Outflows driven by direct and reprocessed radiation pressure in massive star clusters

ABSTRACT We use 3D radiation hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations to study the formation of massive star clusters under the combined effects of direct ultraviolet (UV) and dust-reprocessed infrared (IR) radiation pressure. We explore a broad range of mass surface density Σ ∼ 102–$10^5 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot } \, \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$, spanning values typical of weakly star-forming galaxies to extreme systems such as clouds forming super-star clusters, where radiation pressure is expected to be the dominant feedback mechanism. We find that star formation can only be regulated by radiation pressure for $\Sigma \lesssim 10^3 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot } \, \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$, but that clouds with $\Sigma \lesssim 10^5 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot } \, \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$ become super-Eddington once high star formation efficiencies (${\sim}80~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) are reached, and therefore launch the remaining gas in a steady outflow. These outflows achieve mass-weighted radial velocities of ∼15–$30\, \mathrm{km} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, which is ∼0.5–2.0 times the cloud escape speed. This suggests that radiation pressure is a strong candidate to explain recently observed molecular outflows found in young super-star clusters in nearby starburst galaxies. We quantify the relative importance of UV and IR radiation pressure in different regimes, and deduce that both are equally important for $\Sigma \sim 10^3 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot } \, \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$, whereas clouds with higher (lower) density are increasingly dominated by the IR (UV) component. Comparison with control runs without either the UV or IR bands suggests that the outflows are primarily driven by the impulse provided by the UV component, while IR radiation has the effect of rendering a larger fraction of gas super-Eddington, and thereby increasing the outflow mass flux by a factor of ∼2.

The Effect of Shock-wave Duration on Star Formation and the Initial Condition of Massive Cluster Formation

Stars are born in dense molecular filaments irrespective of their mass. Compression of the interstellar medium by shocks causes filament formation in molecular clouds. Observations show that a massive star cluster formation occurs where the peak of gas column density in a cloud exceeds 1023 cm−2. In this study, we investigate the effect of the shock-compressed layer duration on filament/star formation and how the initial conditions of massive star formation are realized by performing three-dimensional isothermal magnetohydrodynamics simulations with gas inflow duration from the boundaries (i.e., shock-wave duration) as a controlling parameter. Filaments formed behind the shock expand after the duration time for short-shock-duration models, whereas long-duration models lead to star formation by forming massive supercritical filaments. Moreover, when the shock duration is longer than two postshock freefall times, the peak column density of the compressed layer exceeds 1023 cm−2, and the gravitational collapse of the layer causes the number of OB stars expected to be formed in the shock-compressed layer to reach the order of 10 (i.e., massive cluster formation).

Astrochemical modelling of infrared dark clouds

Context. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) that are likely to represent the initial conditions for massive star and star cluster formation. It is thus important to study the physical and chemical conditions of IRDCs to provide constraints and inputs for theoretical models of these processes. Aims. We aim to determine the astrochemical conditions, especially the cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR) and chemical age, in different regions of the massive IRDC G28.37+00.07 by comparing observed abundances of multiple molecules and molecular ions with the predictions of astrochemical models. Methods. We have computed a series of single-zone, time-dependent, astrochemical models with a gas-grain network that systematically explores the parameter space of the density, temperature, CRIR, and visual extinction. We have also investigated the effects of choices of CO ice binding energy and temperatures achieved in the transient heating of grains when struck by cosmic rays. We selected ten positions across the IRDC that are known to have a variety of star formation activity. We utilised mid-infrared extinction maps and sub-millimetre (sub-mm) emission maps to measure the mass surface densities of these regions needed for abundance and volume density estimates. The sub-mm emission maps were also used to measure temperatures. We then used Instituto de Radioas-tromía Milimétrica (IRAM) 30 m observations of various tracers, especially C18O(1-0), H13CO+(1-0), HC18O+(1-0), and N2H+(1-0), to estimate column densities and thus abundances. Finally, we investigated the range of astrochemical conditions that are consistent with the observed abundances. Results. The typical physical conditions of the IRDC regions are nH ~ 3 × 104 to 105 cm−3 and T ≃ 10 to 15 K. Strong emission of H13CO+(1-0) and N2H+(1-0) is detected towards all the positions and these species are used to define relatively narrow velocity ranges of the IRDC regions, which are used for estimates of CO abundances, via C18O(1-0). We would like to note that CO depletion factors are estimated to be in the range fD ~ 3 to 10. Using estimates of the abundances of CO, HCO+, and N2H+, we find consistency with astrochemical models that have relatively low CRIRs of ζ ~ 10−18 to ~10−17 s−1, with no evidence for systematic variation with the level of star formation activity. Astrochemical ages, which are defined with a reference to an initial condition of all H in H2, all C in CO, and all other species in atomic form, are found to be <1 Myr. We also explore the effects of using other detected species, that is HCN, HNC, HNCO, CH3OH, and H2CO, to constrain the models. These generally lead to implied conditions with higher levels of CRIRs and older chemical ages. Considering the observed fD versus nH relation of the ten positions, which we find to have relatively little scatter, we discuss potential ways in which the astrochemical models can match such a relation as a quasi-equilibrium limit valid at ages of at least a few free-fall times, that is ≳0.3 Myr, including the effect of CO envelope contamination, small variations in temperature history near 15 K, CO-ice binding energy uncertainties, and CR-induced desorption. We find general consistency with the data of ~0.5 Myr-old models that have ζ ~ 2-5 × 10−18 s−1 and CO abundances set by a balance of freeze-out with CR-induced desorption. Conclusions. We have constrained the astrochemical conditions in ten regions in a massive IRDC, finding evidence for relatively low values of CRIR compared to diffuse ISM levels. We have not seen clear evidence for variation in the CRIR with the level of star formation activity. We favour models that involve relatively low CRIRs (≲10−17 s−1) and relatively old chemical ages (≳0.3 Myr, i.e. ≳3tff). We discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainties in these results and the overall implications for IRDC evolutionary history and astrochemical models.

Star cluster formation from giant molecular clouds in the Small Magellanic Cloud about 2 Gyr ago: their origin, structures, and kinematics

ABSTRACT Recent observations have found that the age distribution of star clusters (SCs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) shows a sharp peak around 2 Gyr ago. However, it is theoretically unclear what physical processes are responsible for such sudden formation of SCs in the SMC. Here, we investigate whether massive SCs with initial masses more than $10^5\, \text{M}_\odot$ can be formed during tidal interaction of the SMC with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) about 2 Gyr ago, based on our new simulations, which include molecular hydrogen formation on dust grains and SC formation within giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We find that the formation of GMCs with masses more than $10^5\, \text{M}_\odot$ can be dramatically enhanced due to the tidal force of the LMC–SMC interaction. We also find that gravitationally bound massive SCs can be formed within these GMCs, though their mean stellar densities ($10^4\, \text{M}_\odot \,\text{pc}^{-3}$) are systematically lower than those of the genuine globular clusters (GCs). All simulated SCs have diffuse extended stellar envelopes that were formed from multiple merging of sub clusters within their natal GMCs. Furthermore, we find that some of the simulated SCs can have considerable global internal rotation and sub-structures surrounding them. Based on these simulation results, we discuss the origin of the observed diverse properties of SCs in the SMC and the physical roles of galaxy interaction in the formation of massive SCs from GMCs.

Massive Star Cluster Formation and Destruction in Luminous Infrared Galaxies in GOALS. II. An ACS/WFC3 Survey of Nearby LIRGs

Abstract We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 near-UV and Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Channel optical study into the star cluster populations of a sample of 10 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey. Through integrated broadband photometry we have derived ages, masses, and extinctions for a total of 1027 star clusters in galaxies with d L < 110 Mpc in order to avoid issues related to cluster bending. The measured cluster age distribution slope of dN / d τ ∝ τ − 0.5 + / − 0.12 is steeper than what has been observed in lower-luminosity star-forming galaxies. Further, differences in the slope of the observed cluster age distribution between inner- ( dN / d τ ∝ τ − 1.07 + / − 0.12 ) and outer-disk ( dN / d τ ∝ τ − 0.37 + / − 0.09 ) star clusters provide evidence of mass-dependent cluster destruction in the central regions of LIRGs driven primarily by the combined effect of strong tidal shocks and encounters with massive giant molecular clouds. Excluding the nuclear ring surrounding the Seyfert 1 nucleus in NGC 7469, the derived cluster mass function (CMF; dN / dM ∝ M α ) offers marginal evidence for a truncation in the power law at M t ∼ 2×106 M ⊙ for our three most cluster-rich sources, which are all classified as early stage mergers. Finally, we find evidence of a flattening of the CMF slope of dN / dM ∝ M − 1.42 ± 0.1 for clusters in late-stage mergers relative to early stage (α = −1.65 ± 0.02), which we attribute to an increase in the formation of massive clusters over the course of the interaction.

Radiation hydrodynamics simulations of massive star cluster formation in giant molecular clouds

ABSTRACT By performing 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations, we study the formation of young massive star clusters (YMCs; M* > 104 M⊙) in clouds with the surface density ranging from Σcl = 80 to 3200 M⊙ pc−2. We find that photoionization feedback suppresses star formation significantly in clouds with low-surface density. Once the initial surface density exceeds ∼100 M⊙ pc−2 for clouds with Mcl = 106 M⊙ and Z = Z⊙, most of the gas is converted into stars because the photoionization feedback is inefficient in deep gravitational potential. In this case, the star clusters are massive and gravitationally bounded as YMCs. The transition surface density increases as metallicity decreases, and it is ∼350 M⊙ pc−2 for Z = 10−2 Z⊙. We show that more than 10 per cent of star formation efficiency (SFE) is needed to keep a star cluster gravitationally bounded even after the disruption of a cloud. Also, we develop a semi-analytical model reproducing the SFEs obtained in our simulations. We find that the SFEs are fit with a power-law function with the dependence ${\propto}\Sigma _{\rm cl}^{1/2}$ for low-surface density and rapidly increases at the transition surface densities. The conditions of the surface density and the metallicity match recent observations of giant molecular clouds forming YMCs in nearby galaxies.

Effects of initial density profiles on massive star cluster formation in giant molecular clouds

ABSTRACT We perform a suite of hydrodynamic simulations to investigate how initial density profiles of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) affect their subsequent evolution. We find that the star formation duration and integrated star formation efficiency of the whole clouds are not sensitive to the choice of different profiles but are mainly controlled by the interplay between gravitational collapse and stellar feedback. Despite this similarity, GMCs with different profiles show dramatically different modes of star formation. For shallower profiles, GMCs first fragment into many self-gravitation cores and form subclusters that distributed throughout the entire clouds. These subclusters are later assembled ‘hierarchically’ to central clusters. In contrast, for steeper profiles, a massive cluster is quickly formed at the centre of the cloud and then gradually grows its mass via gas accretion. Consequently, central clusters that emerged from clouds with shallower profiles are less massive and show less rotation than those with the steeper profiles. This is because (1) a significant fraction of mass and angular momentum in shallower profiles is stored in the orbital motion of the subclusters that are not able to merge into the central clusters, and (2) frequent hierarchical mergers in the shallower profiles lead to further losses of mass and angular momentum via violent relaxation and tidal disruption. Encouragingly, the degree of cluster rotations in steeper profiles is consistent with recent observations of young and intermediate-age clusters. We speculate that rotating globular clusters are likely formed via an ‘accretion’ mode from centrally concentrated clouds in the early Universe.

Formation of Massive Star Clusters by Fast H i Gas Collision

Abstract Young massive clusters (YMCs) are dense aggregates of young stars, which are essential to galaxy evolution, owing to their ultraviolet radiation, stellar winds, and supernovae. The typical mass and radius of YMCs are M ∼ 104 M ⊙ and R ∼ 1 pc, respectively, indicating that many stars are located in a small region. The formation of YMC precursor clouds may be difficult because a very compact massive cloud should be formed before stellar feedback blows off the cloud. Recent observational studies suggest that YMCs can be formed as a consequence of the fast H i gas collision with a velocity of ∼100 km s−1, which is the typical velocity of the galaxy–galaxy interaction. In this study, we examine whether the fast H i gas collision triggers YMC formation using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations, which includes the effects of self-gravity, radiative cooling/heating, and chemistry. We demonstrate that massive gravitationally bound gas clumps with M > 104 M ⊙ and L ∼ 4 pc are formed in the shock compressed region induced by the fast H i gas collision, in which massive gas clumps can evolve into YMCs. Our results show that the YMC precursors are formed by the global gravitational collapse of molecular clouds, and YMCs can be formed even in low-metal environments, such as the Magellanic Clouds. Additionally, the very massive YMC precursor cloud, with M > 105 M ⊙, can be created when we consider the fast collision of H i clouds, which may explain the origin of the very massive stellar cluster R136 system in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Dust Temperature Profiles in Dense Cores Related to the High-Mass Star-Forming Regions

Using the APEX-12m telescope, continuum maps at 350~$\mu$m of eight gas-dust clouds from the southern hemisphere are obtained. Clouds are associated with the regions of massive star and star cluster formation and have dense cores. Core sizes estimated at the half maximum level are $\sim 0.1-0.2$~pc, core masses and mean gas densities lie in the ranges: $\sim 20-1000~M_{\odot}$ and $\sim (0.3-7.3)\times 10^6$~cm$^{-3}$, respectively. Comparison of the 350~$\mu$m data with the data of observations at 1.2~mm has been performed. From the ratios of intensities at two wavelengths convolved to the same angular resolution, spatial distributions of dust temperatures averaged over the line of sight are calculated. Dust temperature maps for most objects correlate with spatial distributions of intensities at 350~$\mu$m. A decrease in dust temperature with a distance from the center is detected in the cores. Dust temperature profiles in most cases are close to linear ones. Using a simple spherically-symmetric cloud model it is shown that temperature profiles similar to the observed ones can be obtained in a model with internal source by varying density profile parameters and setting $\beta$, a power-law index of the dust emissivity dependence on frequency, constant. It is shown that the dust temperatures estimates strongly depend on the accepted value of $\beta$. It is considered how possible variations of $\beta$ in a cloud can affect the results obtained.

Massive star cluster formation and evolution in tidal dwarf galaxies

Context. The formation of globular clusters remains an open debate. Dwarf starburst galaxies are efficient at forming young massive clusters with similar masses as globular clusters and may hold the key to understanding their formation. Aims. We study star cluster formation in a tidal debris, including the vicinity of three tidal dwarf galaxies, in a massive gas-dominated collisional ring around NGC 5291. These dwarfs have physical parameters that differ significantly from local starbursting dwarfs. They are gas rich, highly turbulent, their gas metallicity is already enriched up to half solar values, and they are expected to be free of dark matter. The aim is to study massive star cluster formation in this as yet unexplored type of environment. Methods. We used imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope using broadband filters that cover the wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. We determined the masses and ages of the cluster candidates by using the spectral energy distribution-fitting code CIGALE. We considered age-extinction degeneracy effects on the estimation of the physical parameters. Results. We find that the tidal dwarf galaxies in the ring of NGC 5291 are forming star clusters with an average efficiency of ∼40%, which is similar to blue compact dwarf galaxies. We also find massive star clusters for which the photometry suggests that they were formed at the very birth of the tidal dwarf galaxies. These clusters have survived for several hundred million years. Therefore our study shows that extended tidal dwarf galaxies and compact clusters may be formed simultaneously. In the specific case observed here, the young star clusters are not massive enough to survive for a Hubble time. However, it may be speculated that similar objects at higher redshift, with a higher star formation rate, might form some of the long-lived globular clusters.

On the origin of multiple populations during massive star cluster formation

We investigate the possibility that multiple populations in globular clusters arise as a natural by-product of massive star-cluster formation. We use 3D radiative hydrodynamics simulations for the formation of young massive clusters to track their chemical self-enrichment during their first 5 Myr. These clusters form embedded within filamentary Giant Molecular Clouds by a combination of gas accretion and rapid merging of protoclusters. Chemical enrichment is a dynamic process happening as the young cluster assembles, so that the original (1P) and enriched (2P) subpopulations of stars form almost simultaneously. Here we test two simple and opposite extremes for the injection of enriched material into the intracluster gas: we assume either continuous injection in a way that tracks the star formation rate; or sudden injection by a single instantaneous event. Using helium abundance as a proxy for the enrichment, we find that realistic multiple population features can be reproduced by injecting a total helium mass amounting to a few percent of the cluster's total mass. The differences in individual growth histories can lead to widely differing 1P/2P outcomes. These models suggest that dual or multiple populations can emerge rapidly in massive star clusters undergoing the typical mode of star cluster formation.

Young massive star cluster formation in the Galactic Centre is driven by global gravitational collapse of high-mass molecular clouds

Young massive clusters (YMCs) are the most compact, high-mass stellar systems still forming at the present day. The precursor clouds to such systems are, however, rare due to their large initial gas mass reservoirs and rapid dispersal timescales due to stellar feedback. Nonetheless, unlike their high-z counterparts, these precursors are resolvable down to the sites of individually forming stars, and hence represent the ideal environments in which to test the current theories of star and cluster formation. Using high angular resolution (1$^{\prime\prime}$ / 0.05pc) and sensitivity ALMA observations of two YMC progenitor clouds in the Galactic Centre, we have identified a suite of molecular line transitions -- e.g. c-C$_{3}$H$_{2} $($7-6$) -- that are believed to be optically thin, and reliably trace the gas structure in the highest density gas on star-forming core scales. We conduct a virial analysis of the identified core and proto-cluster regions, and show that half of the cores (5/10) and both proto-clusters are unstable to gravitational collapse. This is the first kinematic evidence of global gravitational collapse in YMC precursor clouds at such an early evolutionary stage. The implications are that if these clouds are to form YMCs, then they likely do so via the "conveyor-belt" mode, whereby stars continually form within dispersed dense gas cores as the cloud undergoes global gravitational collapse. The concurrent contraction of both the cluster-scale gas and embedded (proto)stars ultimately leads to the high (proto)stellar density in YMCs.

A universal route for the formation of massive star clusters in giant molecular clouds

Young massive star clusters (YMCs, with M $\geq$10$^4$ M$_{\odot}$) are proposed modern-day analogues of the globular clusters (GCs) that were products of extreme star formation in the early universe. The exact conditions and mechanisms under which YMCs form remain unknown -- a fact further complicated by the extreme radiation fields produced by their numerous massive young stars. Here we show that GC-sized clusters are naturally produced in radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of isolated 10$^7$ M$_{\odot}$ Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) with properties typical of the local universe, even under the influence of radiative feedback. In all cases, these massive clusters grow to GC-level masses within 5 Myr via a roughly equal combination of filamentary gas accretion and mergers with several less massive clusters. Lowering the heavy-element abundance of the GMC by a factor of 10 reduces the opacity of the gas to radiation and better represents the high-redshift formation conditions of GCs. This results in higher gas accretion leading to a mass increase of the largest cluster by a factor of ~4. When combined with simulations of less massive GMCs (10$^{4-6}$ M$_{\odot}$), a clear relation emerges between the maximum YMC mass and the mass of the host GMC. Our results demonstrate that YMCs, and potentially GCs, are a simple extension of local cluster formation to more massive clouds and do not require suggested exotic formation scenarios.

Connections between Star Cluster Populations and Their Host Galaxy Nuclear Rings

Abstract Nuclear rings are excellent laboratories for probing diverse phenomena such as the formation and evolution of young massive star clusters and nuclear starbursts, as well as the secular evolution and dynamics of their host galaxies. We have compiled a sample of 17 galaxies with nuclear rings, which are well resolved by high-resolution Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope imaging. For each nuclear ring, we identified the ring star cluster population, along with their physical properties (ages, masses, and extinction values). We also determined the integrated ring properties, including the average age, total stellar mass, and current star formation rate (SFR). We find that Sb-type galaxies tend to have the highest ring stellar mass fraction with respect to the host galaxy, and this parameter is correlated with the ring’s SFR surface density. The ring SFRs are correlated with their stellar masses, which is reminiscent of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. There are striking correlations between star-forming properties (i.e., SFR and SFR surface density) and nonaxisymmetric bar parameters, appearing to confirm previous inferences that strongly barred galaxies tend to have lower ring SFRs, although the ring star formation histories turn out to be significantly more complicated. Nuclear rings with higher stellar masses tend to be associated with lower cluster mass fractions, but there is no such relation for the ages of the rings. The two youngest nuclear rings in our sample, NGC 1512 and NGC 4314, which have the most extreme physical properties, represent the young extremity of the nuclear ring age distribution.

Shape analysis of H ii regions – I. Statistical clustering

We present here our shape analysis method for a sample of 76 Galactic HII regions from MAGPIS 1.4 GHz data. The main goal is to determine whether physical properties and initial conditions of massive star cluster formation is linked to the shape of the regions. We outline a systematic procedure for extracting region shapes and perform hierarchical clustering on the shape data. We identified six groups that categorise HII regions by common morphologies. We confirmed the validity of these groupings by bootstrap re-sampling and the ordinance technique multidimensional scaling. We then investigated associations between physical parameters and the assigned groups. Location is mostly independent of group, with a small preference for regions of similar longitudes to share common morphologies. The shapes are homogeneously distributed across Galactocentric distance and latitude. One group contains regions that are all younger than 0.5 Myr and ionised by low- to intermediate-mass sources. Those in another group are all driven by intermediate- to high-mass sources. One group was distinctly separated from the other five and contained regions at the surface brightness detection limit for the survey. We find that our hierarchical procedure is most sensitive to the spatial sampling resolution used, which is determined for each region from its distance. We discuss how these errors can be further quantified and reduced in future work by utilising synthetic observations from numerical simulations of HII regions. We also outline how this shape analysis has further applications to other diffuse astronomical objects.

The Stellar Content of the Infalling Molecular Clump G286.21+0.17

Abstract The early evolution during massive star cluster formation is still uncertain. Observing embedded clusters at their earliest stages of formation can provide insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of the stars and thus probe different star cluster formation models. We present near-infrared imaging of an 8′ × 13′ (5.4 pc × 8.7 pc) region around the massive infalling clump G286.21+0.17 (also known as BYF73). The stellar content across the field is determined and photometry is derived in order to obtain stellar parameters for the cluster members. We find evidence for some sub-structure (on scales less than a parsec in diameter) within the region with apparently at least three different sub-clusters associated with the molecular clump based on differences in extinction and disk fractions. At the center of the clump we identify a deeply embedded sub-cluster. Near-infrared excess is detected for 39%–44% in the two sub-clusters associated with molecular material and 27% for the exposed cluster. Using the disk excess as a proxy for age, this suggests the clusters are very young. The current total stellar mass is estimated to be at least 200 M ⊙. The molecular core hosts a rich population of pre-main-sequence stars. There is evidence for multiple events of star formation both in terms of the spatial distribution within the star-forming region and possibly from the disk frequency.
