Generalized canonical quantization of a bosonic string model in massive background fields

A method of constructing a canonical gauge invariant quantum formulation for a non-gauge classical theory depending on a set of parameters is proposed and then applied to the theory of a closed bosonic string interacting with massive background fields. It is shown that within the proposed formulation the correct linear equations of motion for background fields arise.

Canonical approach to string theory in massive background fields

A method of constructing a canonical gauge-invariant quantum formulation for a non-gauge classical theory depending on a set of parameters is advanced and then applied to the theory of a closed bosonic string interacting with massive background fields. Choosing an ordering prescription and developing a suitable regularization technique, we calculate quantum gauge algebra up to linear order in background fields. The requirement of closure for the algebra leads to equations of motion for the massive background fields, which appear to be consistent with the structure of the string spectrum.

Towards string theory in massive background fields

A review of recent progress in string theory coupled to massive background fields is given. The problems of formulation are discussed. The general renormalization structure of bosonic string theory in background fields of massive modes is studied. Linear approximation in open string theory in background fields of first massive modes is investigated.

Massive fields dynamics in open bosonic string theory

We consider the theory of the open bosonic string in massive background fields. The general structure of renormalization in investigated. A general covariant action for a string in background fields of the first massive level is suggested and its symmetries are described. Equations of motion for the background fields are obtained by demanding that the renormalized operator of the energy-momentum tensor trace vanishes.

Superconformal deformation, zero-norm states and space-time symmetries of the superstring theories

We present a formalism to study type II and Heterotic superstrings with massless and massive background fields in the bosonic sector. This formalism is appropriate to study high energy symmetries of the superstring. As an example, we explicitly relate all massless symmetries to the massless zero-norm states in the spectrum. This includes theE 8 ⊗E 8 andSO (32) gauge symmetries in the ten-dimensional Heterotic string. The first (evenG-parity) massive level is briefly described. We then argue the existence of new symmetries for the massive Yang-Mills-like gauge bosons and tensor fields at each fixed mass level. These enlarged stringy symmetries correspond to the decoupling of massive zero-norm states in the spectrum.

Zero-norm states and enlarged gauge symmetries of the closed bosonic string with massive background fields

Conformal symmetry on the world-sheet is used to derive the effective equations of motion of target space fields for the closed bosonic string up to the second massive level. These equations are calculated in the weal field approximation, but to all orders in the inverse Planck scale α′. Enlarged gauge symmetries of the target space fields are derived directly from both types of zero-norm states in the bosonic string spectrum. Some of these symmetries can be generated by world-sheet (1, 0) or (0, 1) primary field generators.

String field theory from Weyl invariance

We consider the quantization of strings in general massive background fields. Imposing Weyl invariance leads to equations that generalize the β-function equations of the massless theory. Considering in detail the open string we show how the requirement of Weyl invariance produces the linearized string field theory equations of motion possessing a partial gauge invariance. Weyl anomaly contributions of the correlation functions are important for this correspondence. We also display how ghost type vertex operators can couple in the background 2D σ-model.
